then a whole bunch of class A-- I'll just tell you the new ones, there's echopaw (jirou) and shadepaw (momo),

then another assorted character dump, new ones being dogsnout (hound dog), shademask (13), cherrywhisper (mandalay), sunwatcher (ragdoll), mudriver (pixie bob), tigerspring (tiger), nighteye, wolfstar (jeanist), and then a slightly better sparkpaw/denki bc on god i cant ever get him right....

then another attempt at monoma and kendou, although atp i was considering making his prefix ferret- instead. but it does have some fun design notes about how i pick his shapes and such. also shows of kendous warrior name, maplestrike.

then some more weaselpaw, some weaselpaw and skypaw a la jta, doodles of redstar, maplepaw, and weaselpaw, and then an ojiro + color test on monoma once more.

Emerge - la propuesta alternativa de Mudrive.

Entrevistamos a la banda de metal alternativo/grunge tras el lanzamiento de  su primer EP. Emerge.

Formada en 2018, Mudrive combina la fuerza del metal con la esencia del grunge, en un sonido característico que ellos mismos describen como oscuro, pesado y melancólico. Bajo esta premisa, el trío de Montevideo editó el pasado 27 de Agosto su primer material, Emerge.  Arde conversó con sus integrantes: Sofi May, Leandro de los Santos y Luciano Mouriño; para conocer más acerca de la banda y el armado de su EP.

Un power trío con voz femenina no es el formato más típico dentro del metal. ¿Cómo llegaron a esta formación? Nuestra formación originalmente era de cuatro personas, y justo antes de que empezara el tema de la Pandemia nos quedamos sin baterista. Decidimos seguir adelante de todas formas con el EP entre los tres (Leandro, Sofía y Luciano). Terminamos de componer las baterías entre nosotros, sin tener mucha idea y haciendo lo que nos sonaba bien. Al estar medio detenido el tema de tocar en vivo, todavía no nos hemos puesto a buscar baterista, pero planeamos regresar a ser cuatro en algún momento, cuando pase todo esto.

Se definen como una banda de metal alternativo con fuertes influencias grunge. ¿Por qué esta fusión? ¿Quiénes son sus influencias? Originalmente, la idea era hacer una banda "grunge", y este factor está fuertemente presente en los riffs, las melodías, las letras y la actitud de la banda, pero en la producción apostamos por un sonido más 'metalero' (tirando al nu metal o al metal alternativo), y algunas canciones en el EP (como High Tides o Grains of Sand) tienen cortes y partes más metaleras. A su vez, en los temas nuevos que estamos componiendo, el factor metalero estará aún más presente, y nos es cómodo. Leandro y Luciano vienen de tocar en bandas de metal, mientras que yo (Sofía) vengo más del rock alternativo, y la fusión a veces se va más para un lado o más para el otro, pero la banda se encuentra en esos límites. Nuestras influencias son variadas... Alice in Chains, Soundgarden, Stone Temple Pilots, Pantera, Megadeth, Black Sabbath y A Perfect Circle, por decir algo.

Existe la concepción del metalero como un ser purista, reacio a escuchar propuestas distintas. ¿Cómo ha recibido el medio local a Mudrive?  ¿Se sienten parte del ambiente del metal uruguayo? No nos sentimos muy identificados con la imagen del 'metalero' y tampoco nos interesa mucho encajar en ese estereotipo de banda. Tampoco es que nos sentimos una banda de "metal", simplemente utilizamos esa etiqueta como parte de nuestra descripción, para llegar más fácilmente a la gente y que se entienda mejor la propuesta. Nos consideramos una banda que utiliza y juega con el metal, pero también con el rock, el pop, el blues, el country y otros géneros (aunque en menor grado) y además tenemos un sonido pesado, oscuro y "metalero". Por suerte, por ahora solo hemos recibido buenos comentarios y mensajes de apoyo por parte del público y de los medios con los que hemos tenido contacto. Por más que exista el metalero 'cerrado', reacio a escuchar propuestas nuevas, también existen esas personas que gustan de la música pesada, le dan oportunidad a las bandas nuevas y mantienen 'vivo' el espíritu del género.

Con dos años en actividad, acaban de lanzar su primer EP. ¿Era grabar un objetivo de la banda desde sus inicios? Si, definitivamente. ¡Objetivo cumplido! Trabajamos estas primeras composiciones durante año y medio, desde la concepción de las ideas hasta el mastering. Fue 100% hecho por nosotros y estamos muy contentos con el resultado.

Emerge consiste de riffs pesados, una distorsión cruda y una poderosa voz soprano. Un sonido hermético pero a la vez melódico que trae a la memoria las clásicas bandas del movimiento grunge nacido en Seattle, pero sin perder nunca la huella del sonido del siglo XXI en la producción.

¿Cómo fue el proceso de composición y producción del mismo? ¿Qué rol adopta cada uno en esa etapa creativa? Tenemos gran afinidad a la hora de componer y trabajar los temas. Desde el principio nos encontramos rápidamente en el proceso y logramos una energía creativa bastante única. La primera canción de la banda fue "Bleed (Bring Me Down)" que a la vez fue nuestro primer corte difusión y fue un proceso a través del cual aprendimos un montón. Teníamos los riffs iniciales, luego con la letra armamos una estructura básica, grabamos una maqueta, definimos cada parte y el rol de cada instrumento, luego la re-grabamos más prolija, la mezclamos y la masterizamos. Así, más o menos, fue con todos los temas. Usualmente las ideas nacen de riffs o de melodías que trae alguno de los tres a la mesa, y luego se trabaja en conjunto hasta lograr algo que nos guste a todos.

Les toca dar a conocer Emerge en plena Pandemia, con un lento retorno a los escenarios. ¿Tienen planes de presentarlo en vivo? Teníamos muchas ganas de presentarlo en vivo y de tocar los temas, y lamentablemente no sabemos cuándo eso va a pasar. Nos encantaría hacer una fecha de presentación cuando se pueda, aunque ahora estamos enfocados en difundirlo en redes lo más posible y darlo a conocer por ahí. La banda solo ha tocado en vivo una vez hasta ahora y ¡estamos con todas las ganas!
