Ever feel like a fish out of water? Meet the giant mudskipper (Periophthalmodon schlosseri). Believe it or not, this fish needs to breathe air and spends a decent amount of time on land! Found on the muddy shores of mangroves in parts of Southeast Asia, it uses its pectoral fins to “skip” or “walk” across mudflats.

mudskippers can breath through their skin as long as they are wet. this also allows them to go on land in humid areas and they can hop (or skip) around

Mudskippers evolved the ability to blink separately to tetrapods. blinking is not something that most fish do, and this behaviour could show the link when blinking developped when things started crawling out of the oceans! (x)

kidding. i think mudskippers are adorable. they come in varying sizes and have a variety of patterns (silver stripes, orange spots, blue spots, etc)

this one is the dusky-gilled mudskipper (Periophthalmus variabilis) which can be identified by its reddish pectoral fins, ones that have adapted to be much stronger than the average fish, allowing the mudskipper to lift and haul its body across the shore
