Local votes to regional destiny? The future of democracy in South Asia
I meant to share this when it was first published on Sapan News recently, my article co-authored with Dr Serena Hussain and Vishal Sharma, but was caught up with the Colombo screening of my Sri Lanka documentary. Thought I’d post now – the piece is still relevant especially given a recent article in an influential foreign policy magazine debunking the idea of Southasia Why the regimes ushered in…

Pakistan : Even After 16 Years, Former Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto’s Assassination Still Remains An Unsolved Mystery Says A Report
As Pakistan marked the 16th death anniversary of former prime minister Benazir Bhutto, the mystery surrounding her assassination remains unsolved, according to a media report.
Bhutto, Pakistan’s first woman prime minister, was assassinated in a suicide bomb blast-cum-gun shooting attack outside the famous Liaquat Bagh as she was about to depart after addressing an election rally on December 27, 2007. She was aged 54. Pakistan was under the rule of military dictator General Pervez Musharraf at that time.
According to a report in Geo News, Bhutto’s party — Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) — remained in power from 2008 till 2013 but was unable to take any meaningful steps to find the people and forces behind her assassination.
“With each passing day, the mystery surrounding the assassination of Benazir Bhutto continued to grow. First with the change of the route of her return after addressing the rally, a hurried washing of the crime scene by the administration, washing away critical evidence, and a shake-up in top local bureaucracy,” the report said.
The administration at that time had declared the incident “a terror strike” and even released intercepts of alleged terrorists’ telephonic conversations and sketches of two persons purported as Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) members.
Musharraf had called an investigation team from Scotland Yard of the United Kingdom to investigate the killing of Bhutto. The probe team submitted a report on January 8, 2008. However, both PPP and former president and Bhutto’s husband Asif Ali Zardari rejected the Scotland Yard report, declaring it inept and full of doubts, and accused Musharraf of being behind the assassination.
There were repeated demands for an independent inquiry by the UN into the incident by the PPP government and eventually, Bank Ki-Moon, the then Secretary-General of the United Nations announced in February 2009 for sending a high-level UN Fact Finding Mission to look into the incident.
The UN Fact-Finding Mission arrived in Islamabad in July 2009 and released its report but that was vague and without any conclusive remarks regarding identifying the culprits behind the tragic incident.
The UN Fact-Finding Mission report was rejected by Zardari and the PPP, citing reasons that it contains no substance and no efforts were made by the UN Mission to point out the people and the elements behind the gruesome suicide attack on the two-time prime minister.
“Over the last 16 years, there have been multiple theories behind the elimination of Benazir Bhutto but there is hardly any solid evidence available to corroborate those theories,” the Geo News report said.
“But there were enough events that followed BB’s assassination which strongly indicated that all out efforts were made to hide the facts to confuse things and mislead the investigators who tried to solve the ‘mystery’,” it said.
As Pakistan marked the 16th anniversary of Bhotto’s “violent death the mystery is still unsolved”, the report said.

ur celebrating operation sindhoor that killed more kids and innocent women than the supposed terrorists yall claim were killed. India literally attacked innocent civilian and civilian infrastructure in the middle of the night with zero proof. Cowardly ass nation.
You are calling us “cowardly” nation? let’s be honest and get the facts straight.
India has faced decades of cross-border terrorism, not because it sought war or conflict, but because it has been systematically provoked. Since independence, India has refrained from initiating wars or unprovoked attacks. Have you ever heard of india attacking any other nation first because to gain power? that's not us!! we have been the one of restraint and peace since centuries. But when our soldiers are killed, our civilians attacked, and our sovereignty threatened, we will not sit quietly. India has every right legally, morally, and constitutionally to defend its people. And I didn't hear you coming here and sympathising is us and raise your voice against terrorism? when terrorist attacked pahalgam, killed 26 inocent indian citizens infront of their family? infront of their wives, mothers and children???? where were you? or wasn't that a terrorist attack at all in your pov?
And about attacking without any proof, the sites india attacked are some of the terrorist camps. If you think pakistan is not associated with terrorists at all then a simple google search will tell you where terrorist groups like:
Jaish-e-Mohammed (JeM) – Based in Bahawalpur, Pakistan
Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) – Based in Muridke, Pakistan
Al-Qaeda in the Indian Subcontinent (AQIS) – Operating from Pakistan’s tribal areas
Tehrik-i-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) – Found safe havens in various parts of Pakistan
These are not baseless claims, they are well documented by international security agencies, and even acknowledged by Pakistan's own leadership. In fact, Pakistan’s former President Pervez Musharraf (https://www.google.com/amp/s/www.thehindu.com/news/international/south-asia/Pakistan-supported-trained-terror-groups-like-Lashkar-e-Taiba-Pervez-Musharraf/article60516617.ece/amp/) and Pakistan’s Defence Minister, Khawaja Muhammad Asif has admitted recently to supporting such groups for geopolitical leverage, openly saying they "did the West’s dirty work."
So before criticizing India for striking back, ask this:
Why are these groups allowed to operate?
Why has Pakistan not taken decisive action to dismantle these networks?
Why do deadly attacks like Mumbai 2008, Uri 2016, and Pulwama 2019 keep tracing back to Pakistan?
India does not want war. I CERTAINLY DON'T. Most Indians stand for peace. We have seen what happened in Palestine, innocent people were murdered cold blooded on the name of war. So yes I don't want war and certainly I'm not in support of war. BUT when provoked, India has the right to act. Period. We are not going to sit here watch them kill innocent life's in our land. THAT'S WHAT OPERATION SINDOOR WAS ABOUT. killing and destroying TERRORIST CAMPS INSIDE POK AND PAKISTAN WHO HAVE BEEN ACTIVELY SENDING TERRORIST CROSS BORDER TO INDIA since decades. we don't strike any military camps either. it was done to destroy terrorist camps.
And regarding civilian casualties, India does not target civilians either. And do you know what pakistan is retaliating for that? by attacking inocent civilians and gurudwaras. but you haven't said anything about that either. or wasn't that terrifying enough for you??
And if innocents die, the responsibility lies with the Pakistan government, not India. For decades, Pakistan has failed its own people. Instead of investing in schools, hospitals, and civil infrastructure, it has spent billions on supporting proxy wars, extremist groups, and weapons. It is not India’s fault that Pakistan’s leaders prioritized terror over their own citizens’ welfare.
So if you’re truly concerned about civilian lives, ask why Pakistan keeps harboring those who invite destruction and then blames others for the consequences.

I would recommend anyone interested in educating themselves about Pakistan and it's terror network to read this thread by an Afghan (pasted below as well):
---
My "becauses" to your "whys".
Why it matters to support India.
In September 1996, President Mohammad Najibullah was brutally executed in Kabul. The prevailing narrative attributes this act to Pakistan’s Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI), with the Taliban as the executors.
From 1992 to 1996, the Islamic Government of Afghanistan, led by President Burhanuddin Rabbani, accused Pakistan of sponsoring Gulbuddin Hekmatyar and later the Taliban to violently overthrow the Afghan government. The ISI was named the orchestrator of this brutal war, driven by Pakistan’s pursuit of “strategic depth.” Reports assert that the ISI supplied 10,000 missiles to target Kabul during this period.
In 1997, a scorched-earth policy devastated the Shamali Plains. The destruction was attributed to a trio coalition of Al-Qaeda, the ISI, and the Taliban. Numerous interviews with national hero Ahmad Shah Massoud, available online, corroborate these assertions.
From 1998 to 2001, Pakistan’s Special Services Group (SSG) deployed units to Kunduz to support the besieged Taliban. Following the 9/11 attacks in 2001, these units were airlifted out in what became known as the “evil flights,” enabled by a secret agreement between Pakistani President Pervez Musharraf and U.S. President George W. Bush.
On September 9, 2001, Ahmad Shah Massoud was assassinated by two Al-Qaeda operatives whose passports recorded twelve trips to Pakistan. General Musharraf warned British Prime Minister Tony Blair and Scotland Yard that pursuing the investigation would jeopardize Pakistan’s role in the anti-terror coalition. The investigation was halted, and the official narrative holds the ISI, Al-Qaeda, and the Taliban responsible for the death of our leader Shaheed Ahmad Shah Massoud.
From 2004 onward, Pakistan’s military provided financial, military, and logistical support to the Taliban, enabling them to regroup and wage a bloody terror campaign against the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan. The ISI was repeatedly condemned by Afghan leaders, including Presidents Hamid Karzai, Dr. Abdullah Abdullah, and Ashraf Ghani, as well as international figures. The U.S. designated the Haqqani network as a “veritable arm” of the ISI.
In 2008, the Indian Embassy in Kabul was bombed. In 2023, the bombers’ families publicly revealed their ties to the Taliban and disclosed the terrorists’ identities online while seeking recognition and financial support from the Taliban system.
On September 20, 2011, Professor Burhanuddin Rabbani, head of the High Peace Council, was assassinated by a Taliban operative using a sophisticated bomb concealed in a turban. The operative had traveled from Pakistan, and the ISI was accused of supplying the device.
On May 31, 2017, the German Embassy in Kabul, located on a crowded street, was bombed by the Haqqani network, killing or injuring over 700 Afghans. The Haqqani network, a close ally of the ISI, was based in Peshawar and Miram Shah.
Pakistan facilitated the Taliban’s diplomatic outreach to legitimize their cause. When Kabul fell in August 2021, ISI chief General Faiz Hameed visited to assist the Taliban in forming a cabinet, famously photographed holding a teacup - celebrating the humiliation of Afghans. Pakistani leaders particularly the relgio-terrorists celebrated the fall of the Afghan Republic as a religious victory, rubbing salt on the wounds of millions of Afghans.
Emboldened by their success in Afghanistan, the ISI and its proxies launched the Pahalgam attack in Kashmir, India, on April 22, 2025, killing 26 cilivilan Indian citizens. in a brutal assault claimed by The Resistance Front (TRF), a Lashkar-e-Taiba offshoot - our common enemy. In response, India, the world’s fifth-largest economy, launched Operation Sindoor to dismantle the ISI’s terror networks.
Why should we not thank India for confronting our common enemy? Why act with cowardice? Some assert that this type of statement conflicts with the interests of our bloc, constituency, or ethnic group.
But let’s not forget Pakistan’s official stance: without the Taliban and the complete removal of ethnic diversity, particularly the Tajiks, from power in Kabul, Rawalpindi would continue to support the Taliban. This policy is recent and well-documented.
We, the good Afghans, couldn’t dismantle the ISI’s terror networks ourselves, though I wish we had. India has now taken bold action. The least we can do is offer moral and political support for India’s large-scale counter-terrorism efforts targeting the culprits behind our leaders’ assassinations.
We live in a multipolar world. The outcome of this conflict will shape South Asia’s strategic landscape. Let’s have the courage to call a spade a spade. And remember: chess was invented in India. They know the game.
----
Pakistan committed genocide in Bangladesh (then East Pakistan) and murdered 3million people. Oh, and this is not the "genocide" in the sense uneducated people like to throw about when referring to Kashmir's administration by India. It was actual genocide classified such by academics due to its target being exterminating young hindu men and systematically raping hindu women.
Pakistan propped up the Taliban and funded terror in Afghanistan. It rejoiced the Afghan's people misery after their fall to Taliban on religious basis.
Pakistan committed countless terror attacks against India, targeting Hindus.
It is not about religion to us, but it is to them. We are 'infidels' and their sole aim to terrorize other peoples.
If you support Pakistan, you are not pro-muslim. You are pro-terror.
