The price of opinion….

Me, us, we have obviously made people cranky with our well researched and evidenced based theories …or they are not liking the silence from our faves…or the queer content from JD and his crew.

I came into the fandom with the intention of just being a silent observer, happy to enjoy, happy to engage in some conversation. I have only been blogging for 8 months, but in that time I have made some incredible connections and had some great conversations.

Everyone on my blog knows it is a Lukola safe space. I try to post or comment on content that is put out from reliable sources…using fact and just providing enough information for you to draw you own conclusions so the choice is everyone’s whether to like, follow, block or scroll on by.

The fact that there is a specific blog out there saying they are Lukola, then accusing myself and several other large accounts of being homophobic, crazy and cult like is so baseless and immature. I am not going to name them, I am sure most on here would know the one I am talking about. I am pretty they do not have many followers, but if you wanna check out your follower list, not everyone who says they are a Lukola have good intentions.

I remain unbothered by being called out by certain Blogs. I confidently put out my thoughts and opinions, not hurting or harassing, not stalking or being evasive. Just opinions based on facts. If they don’t like or don’t agree well they can just….

Hello, I just bought Obscura and I've been LOVING it, the characters are SO compelling and nuanced, and I love the balance of player autonomy and Vesper's characterisation. Lovingly spinning Fran and Oleander in my brain microwave. Also the ART! The ATMOSPHERE! I haven't played many VNs before - are there any that you or the other the raccoons would recommend/that might fall into an 'if you enjoyed Obscura, you might also enjoy...' category? The world of visual novels is vast and extremely exciting, we're so glad you're looking to dive a little deeper into it! I think we'd be very silly if we didn't include Touchstarved as our first recommendation, as it has a similar premise to us of a cursed protagonist going to a dangerous place and meeting untrustworthy men while searching for a cure. A lot of fans of Obscura are also fans of Touchstarved, to the point it's kind of funny seeing the overlap.

Not a specific recommendation so much as a possible lead, but I'd suggest looking at the games featured in last year's Storyteller's Festival (which is over, but the page still shows participating games) and see what piques your interest there. This year's Storyteller's Festival is also coming soon, and there should be a lot of very cool narrative-focused games to try there, too.

But as much as I try, I haven't played every game! So I think it would be extremely cool for anyone who has a "if you like OBSCURA you might like X" recommendation to add it.

In my definition of a good kiss, it doesn't need to be the perfect angle or the perfect "lip-touching", I don't know, people rate such scenes differently. For me it is more about the emotions I could feel during that kiss, the build-up or if there is a special detail that really catches my breath. I guess you'll understand, what I mean when you see my choices.

The iconic rooftop kiss. The whole build-up was perfect. The tears? The first short kiss followed by this gorgeous kiss filled with all the emotions one person can feel? What is not to like about this kiss!?

I was very protective of these two and especially Krist. People were saying, he can't kiss other man because he is homophobic and what is this then? Yes, I remember Sotus. The kisses were.. not good, but I gave Be My Favorite a chance and this kiss was so soft and so full of love and tenderness. I really enjoyed this whole scene a lot! And Kris can kiss.

This kiss came as a big surprise for me. It is Jinwoo trying to hide from Kisub and the letter finding him what leads to this quiet and beautiful first kiss. I loved everything about it!

Ghost Host, Ghost House

All of there kisses were so good! But I loved the teasing and the chasing in this scene especially. Those two have incredible good chemistry and I wish we could see more of them.

History 3: Make Our Days Count

Oh the desperation for each other was so real in this one. Both wanted each other so bad! But what I loved the most about this whole scene was the way how Sun Bo Xiang reassured Lu Zhi Gang that he desired all of him. So good!

I Feel You Linger In The Air

The most painful and saddest kiss in bl-history! It is such a wonderful scene. Everything about it made me cry and smile at the same time. Gorgeous scene!

Jack and Joker

They finally confessed and kissed for the first time. And what a kiss this was! It left the most of us speechless and a little bit breathless. The way Jack stopped the kiss in the middle to calm Joke down a little bit and they started the kiss again so fucking tender and argh! I love it so much!!!

Love Class 2

Love Class 2 has some really good kisses, but this one was something else! It is one of the softest kisses ever. I don't know how many times I have rewatched this whole scene. Just look at them. You can feel the softness of this kiss! And there were sounds during that scene... they were something else.

Love For Love's Sake

I really didn't expect that kiss at the end of this series. I hoped for a tight hug, but hello? Those two and the script kept delivering until the very end. This was pure perfection.

Love Mechanics

Yeah, well... perhaps I am just a sucker for YinWar kissing... I don't know. But every time I see this kiss I want to live in this scene forever and I would be perfectly fine. I am just sitting here, wanting to write about this kiss and I stared at it for an unhealthy period of time and forgot everything else. That is really bad. I love that kiss so much!

My Stand-In

They had some good kisses. This was not one of them, but this specific moment, when Joe gave in to the kiss, I was blown away. He really didn't want to like this kiss, but his heart still wanted it. The emotions!

Every once in a while there are these cute and small kisses, so ordinary and overlooked. I think these are very important to portrait a good and real relationship. Because kisses don't need to be these big moments in slow-motion and with different angles. Yes, those are nice, but I really adore those "small" ones that show the love between the characters.

Perfect Propose

The reason I picked this scene is because of the build-up. Hirokuni asked Kai not to call him Hiro, but Kai just ignored him and breathed Hiro and followed with this passionate kiss and I was just in awe.

Sing My Crush

I was absolutely not expecting this kiss! I thought we got this dead-fish-kiss and that would be it. I would have love the series nevertheless, but this scene? Damn, Korea! Such a good kiss!

The Heart Killers

I don't think those two are the best kissers in the industry. I think they have some good chemistry without a doubt. But this kiss. This moment here. It was everything for me. I can feel Style's hand on Fadel's head. I can feel it. And I love it! I am not normal about this scene! Everything about these few seconds brings me so much joy. The look on Fadel's face, the hand and everything that happend before and followed afterwards.

The Day I Loved You

This is still one of my favorite rooftop-kisses. For me it is the way they grab each other to pull the other one close. The way they want to crawl into each other, to feel the other person everywhere. Such a perfect first kiss! Such a perfect scene.

To My Star 2

I love these small kisses. I name them "A thousand little kisses". Those kisses make me smile and so happy! There is nothing more to say about it. I love them. To My Star is just an example for many other shows out there with these little kisses.

I loved this whole scene. But this segment of the kiss, this little dance of them, is so good. I can't tell you how many times I just watched this specific scene. How easy Yuan maneuvered Qian around to close the door. How they kept kissing. I... I... nope. There are no words in my head anymore.

Code Lyoko Lets Go

Because a couple of ya'll (specifically @magicalpoptarts and @imjustheretofangirl003) invited me to infodump about Code Lyoko! So I will! There will be a readmore eventually cuz no way this is gonna be short.

Disclaimers first: I have not watched Code Lyoko in (ooof) probably a decade or so. This is what I remember which mostly means the parts of the show I enjoyed the most! That said you are welcome to fact check me by going to Youtube and watching the entirety of the show for FREE because it's all on youtube on Code Lyoko English Official. Hell yeah.

Code Lyoko is a French animated TV series from 2003 that ended in 2007. Code Lyoko, at a glance, is a Monster of the Week type show where four students at a boarding school combat an evil computer program by diving into a digital world. Very notably this show chose (in 2003!) the badass style choice to have the real world be 2D animation, and the digital world be 3D animation

Everyone has giant foreheads and I love it. Clearly the 3D animation is old, but I absolutely love the choice to have these two style going at once as a way to differentiate the two areas.

Our cast:

Odd Della Robbia - My fave. Usually relegated to Comedy Relief but also can be thought of as The Heart. His lyoko form is a kitty, what isn't there to love.

Ulrich Stern - More reserved and serious, he's the straight man to Odds' hijinks as well as roommates with Odd which creates *drama* between the two. He's athletic and has a lot of parental pressure.

Yumi Ishiyama - Also reserved, she's kind of a badass with both brawn (athletic) and brains (she can man the super computer which I'll talk about more later) She also has a lot of familial pressures - I think her and Ulrich are really meant to contrast and pair together (and indeed they are each others romantic interests). Her Lyoko outfit (ver 1) is one of my faves!

Jeremy Belpois - The computer genius nerd! The guy in the chair! He never receives a Lyoko Form (technically he went in there once but we never get to see what he looked like). He's a goal-oriented (workaholic) kind of guy and he's the one that first discovered the whole supercomputer.

Aelita Schaeffer - Just born yesterday character type, a significantly softer girl in juxtaposition to Yumi. She was a sentient, amnesiac being that already existed in the supercomputer when it woke up, and for a long time it isn't clear if she is a person or a program, and working to get her into the real world is a big plot point.

Xana - The big bad. the evil computer program. Xana I don't believe ever has an actual appearance, just different monsters and forms that it controls and manifests through. Xana wants to... destroy humanity. I don't remember if there's ever a reason given why, but Xana does a great job at being evil!

And that's the main cast! Honorable side character mentions

Jim is one of the teachers at the boarding school, a tough exterior and a heart of gold. He is usually the closest to discovering what the main cast is up to.

Sissy is the resident Mean Girl with a crush on Ulrich. She also ends up becoming closer to the cast and gets more depth over time.

Kiwi is Odd's dog that he hides in his dorm.

Edit: I forgot William but to be fair I don't really care about him lmao. He's a competing love interest for Yumi's affections. The group attempts to bring him into the fold and it does not go well. It's actually a good plot beat - for the group to try and bring in more help and for it to go poorly, which gives reasoning why they don't bring more people in in general. I just don't care for the love triangle.

The Plot:

One day, while looking for computer parts, Jeremy Belpois finds an abandoned factor and a giant computer inside of it.

After turning it on through the controller room he learns about a sentient computer program that lives inside of the computer that has just been awakened, named Aelita. Aelita has no memories and simply woke up in the strange digital landscape of Lyoko - a strange place that appears like a forest with trees like pillars and endless pits between pathways. She is attacked by strange creatures, and takes shelter in a place called a tower.

Unknowingly to Jeremy, this also woke up the evil program known as Xana. Xana can take over towers (which makes them light up red) to create a connection to the outside world. Through that connection Xana wreaks havoc through a variety of means. this can mean basically creating monsters from stuff like creating a monster teddy bear, taking over peoples minds, controlling electronics, etc. Xana has a wide variety of abilities and the show never really states limits but like, in a good way that means that it doesn't usually get *too* stagnant.

Eventually (I really don't remember how) Odd and Ulrich and Yumi get involved with Jeremy, who figures out the the cause of the strange things happening in the real world are coming from the super computer he woke up. With Odd as their guinea pig (and eventually the others join) they use a strange room to digitize their bodies - a person steps in, Jeremy runs some programs from the Lab/Interfacing room, and they appear in the digital world of Lyoko, leaving the scanner they were in empty.

Their appearances and powers in Lyoko are determined on some subconscious level. When they appear in Lyoko they fight the monsters there and do their best to help Aelita get to the towers. Aelita basically has a key integrated into her that she can use on towers to shut them down. When she does this, the screen lights up with 'Code: Lyoko' (WOAH THATS THE NAME OF THE SHOW)

After Aelita does this, Jeremy runs a program he calls 'Return to the Past' which sends the entire world back in time to whenever Xana activated the tower. This undoes all the damage that Xana causes in the real world, and the only people who remember the world being reset are people who have been to Lyoko before (the main cast, naturally, although the first time he did it Jeremy had not been to Lyoko before so he also forgot the events that occurred). A Return to the Past does NOT bring people back to life, however, which maintains the stakes of any given situation as property damage can be undone, but if someone is killed that isn't something that can be fixed.

This is pretty much how the episodes progress - The Lyoko Warriors (the main cast) have something happening at school (a dance, a test, they're learning something in Science) and Xana begins to interfere with the real world, usually in a way that directly affects one of the Main Cast. The main cast then need to find a way to escape to the Supercomputer and get into Lyoko (since they aren't actually allowed to leave the school grounds - the cast getting stuck because of teachers or because of other commitments is a common dramatic beat). They go there, beat the monster, and get Aelita in the tower. In the overarching story they work on figuring out who Aelita is and if they can get her out of the computer, who made the computer in the first place, and how to defeat Xana for good while also navigating interpersonal conflicts and teenage drama.

They're teens so they get to the factory through the sewers using skateboards and scooters. It's great.

Misc Stuff:

There are four sectors in Lyoko, providing some variation in vibes, but they're all pretty bare bones. Eventually they discover another sector that's like the heart of Lyoko which is also pretty simplistic (it was early animation idk what to tell you). THEN they learn that if they travel through the digital ocean they can go to OTHER Lyokos (which disappointingly all are like copies or look the same the one we're familiar with).

Speaking of the digital ocean, all of the land areas and platforms of Lyoko are over what is called the digital ocean. The digital ocean is dangerous for our protagonists - if they call into it their code will be lost and they will, unable to be brought back to the real world. There are several tense scenes where the main characters have to kill the other or kill one another BEFORE they fall into the ocean.

When the Main characters die in Lyoko they appear in the Scanner room visibly shaking and gasping, leading to the common belief that the pain they experience in Lyoko translates to real world pain - including the feeling of death!

In order for people to go to Lyoko someone in the lab room has to activate the scanner programs. This is usually Jeremy, but is sometimes Yumi and I think eventually Aelita can as well? But I like the way that certain characters need to be able to get out of whatever sticky situation they're in to get the whole thing working - a minimum of two people needed is nice. Jeremy eventually also is able to code various vehicles for the crew to use in Lyoko.

Initially Odd had a future sight ability but it gets taken away partway through season 1 and I will ALWAYS be bitter about that.

The show reuses A LOT of animation because of the tight budget. My last rewatch it started to bug me, but I probably wouldn't mind as much now. (the scanner animation they reuse is actually my fave I love it every time) It also has some real pacing issues where several episodes in a row can feel really repetitive as the characters bang their heads against a problem and it feels like it ends the same way every time.

Ultimately what I love about Lyoko is the characters and the concepts. It's a show I think is RIPE for a good remake and re-imagining. The using the two versions of animation was really clever, the teenage monster of the week was exactly the kind of thing I loved to fantasize about when I was a kid, wishing that was my life haha. The designs are fun, the stakes are good but not TOO serious, and a lot of the story and characters I think could be expanded on or changed, such as giving Xana more of a background and adding more variety to the Lyoko world itself. (and maybe fix some plot beats I am unsatisfied with?????)

There were some seasons after 2007 in like uhh 2013 or 2015 or something??? Called Code Lyoko evolution, but the 2D portions of the show were now live action. I uh, never watched it.

I also really like the Gargage Kids Pilot (The Code Lyoko short pilot). It has a lot in common with the end product but also a lot different! Ulrichs Lyoko design is a completely different model and Lyoko has more dimensionality to it, some of their powers look like they cross over to the real world, and the vibes of the supercomputer factory is way different. (warning though the CGI models are UHHH rough looking. This must have been like 2002? BE NICE OKAY)

what’s your fav bloom and rage outfit/style choice for the girls? Also is any of the specific characters look your fav?

I can't choose just one! Now that DN is uploading their Artstation portfolios, these are really easy to share as well.

For Kat, I love her second casual outfit. I love the cutoff overall shorts with the oil stain, which implies she repurposed old overalls into shorts. I love the bandana to get her hair out of her face but also adds a cute girlish touch. I love her purple t-shirt with star motifs. It's just an overall fun outfit for a kid who wants to have a good time outside.

I love all the concert outfits and how very over-the-top, 90's riot grrrl they are. Swann's glam makeup look is my fave though for how the colors complement the others' while still feeling distinctly Swann with the moth shape. Also, purple lipstick! And GLITTER!

Adult Nora as a whole both intrigues and saddens me, because compared to how enthusiastic and excitable she was as a teen, it's so much more difficult to get on her good side as an adult. Her avoidant tendencies are much more pronounced and her overall monochromatic look is so much more conformist and generic than her wild teen self. She's literally wearing business casual when reuniting with her friends. Girl, you're at a bar!! Still, I love her overcoat. I love a good winter peacoat, it's so timeless and looks great on all genders.

I also like Autumn's second casual look as a teen. It's so funny how 90s and Y2K fashion is making a comeback with today's teens, because Autumn's outfit wouldn't look out of place in 2025. She really nailed the fashion rule "baggy top and tiny pants OR tiny top and baggy pants" to a tee! Her crop top contrasting with sweatpants conveys "I'm a confident, sporty, skater gal who also is down to laze on the couch with video games." The skeleton design adds a cool, slightly edgy touch to her normally very cautious and serious personality.

The "riot" masks that the girls wear during their raid on the ranch goes SO hard, but I love how it still has that slight amateur, teen crafter look to it. I love the thought of Nora staying up all night to design the perfect themed mask for each of them and how all the protagonists have an artsy, nerdy side to them. They're definitely well-made masks, but they have visible uneven stitches, streaks of paint, and the textures suggest cheap materials. But it amazes me how DN went the extra mile to enhance the visual language of the game with this rougher, DIY look.

All the girls have their own handwriting, and it's consistent. Swann leaves doodles and old homework assignments all over her room, and they were clearly hand drawn by an artist at DN and have realistic imperfections like stains and scribbles. Kat's journal is a generic composition notebook that she covered in personalized stickers and slogans. When Kat mentioned the Bloom & Rage stickers I thought, "That's weird, when did she have time to design and print her own?" But then you see them, and of course they're not custom designed stickers, but just dollar store stickers that she wrote "BLOOM & RAGE" on with marker. The girls make do with what they have, and it just adds this really nice cohesive, charming look to the whole thing. Especially compared to (again, sorry) Max's journal in Double Exposure with these cartoony, borderline stock image drawings and such boring, corporate UI all over the game.

But perhaps my favorite outfit is adult Swann's. It just looks SO cozy and SO comfy and SO her, exactly what a girl like her would wear by middle age. I bet the artists at DN pulled up Goblincore moodboards and said "That's it! That's our main girl!" She wears those earth tones beautifully. When Double Exposure was revealed, I was disappointed that (AGAIN, I AM SORRY!) Max seemed to be generically prettied up with feminine adult clothes of all random colors that didn't distinguish her from any other young working professionals her age. But what I love about Swann's adult look is that coupled with the fact that she learned to love herself as she aged, her 2022 outfit so clearly conveys that confidence and self-love. The overall silhouette hasn't changed (I bet Swann cried with joy when the low-rise jeans trend of the 2000s finally died off 😂), she still has her high-waisted clothes and backpack. But her visual evolution communicates way more narratively than Max's look in DE; Swann's outfit actually says something. At one point, adult Swann reveals, "I didn't feel like I was the type of girl who was 'allowed' to be into sexy, girly stuff." Aka, fashion choices that society said she wouldn't look "conventionally attractive" in due to her weight. So when we finally see her at the end of the game, it's extra rewarding to notice the longer hair, makeup, nail polish, jewelry, and skirt, which all wonderfully communicate that Swann has embraced her queerness, femininity, and inner and outer beauty as a plus-sized woman. I love Swann's character arc so much. Also, her tattoo is fucking sick.

after debating for weeks whether to stay very far away from the deltarune soriel discourse or let myself ramble about my faves like I want to, the latter has finally won out

I've had time to properly absorb the weight of all that happens at the end of chapter 4, and obviously I do feel for both kris and susie. that is The Point of the scenes being from their perspectives; after everything they just went through and all the worry they had for toriel's safety (for the second time in 24 hours!), the scene they come home to is maybe the most uncomfortable slap in the face possible. it sticks out to me that the last thing susie talks about before the dark fountain is sealed is her wanting tomorrow to be the same as yesterday and for everything to always be able to go back to how it was, and that's what greets them - a blatant, obnoxious sign that things are changing. even though the scene has a lighthearted side, its overall tone adds to the downcast feeling the chapter ends on.

having said that, as someone who has spent the past 9 and a half years being normal about sans and toriel, I'm still very very happy that this is a canon scene we got 💜

the fandom may be largely not considering their perspectives in the slightest (or worse, only viewing their perspectives from the most bad faith angles possible), but I for one love this for them!! as other very good posts have pointed out, toriel has been sorely in need of someone who's there for her - an awful lot of people in town saw the divorce play out and have something to say about it, the holiday family are closer to asgore than toriel, kris is her child and stuck in the middle of their parents' issues, and while she's friends with alphys, them being coworkers and alphys being kris' teacher likely puts a distance of sorts between them. but sans is new in town, someone she immediately connects with, who has no pre-existing opinions about her family and has seen firsthand what toriel has to put up with from asgore. in every universe, sans is exactly the kind of person toriel needs in her life.

there's less to work with from sans' perspective given how little we know about him, and I'm not all-in on sans being from deltarune just yet (more specifically I do love the theory, I'm just giving myself room to not be too disappointed if it doesn't happen), but the new version of it's raining somewhere else being named 'the place where it rained' emotionally destroys me forever. either way it drives home just how happy toriel makes sans in both worlds and I love that so so much :']

to be clear I'm not saying they did nothing wrong, their choices negatively impacted kris and susie and they were objectively disruptive and inconsiderate after kris went to bed. but I like that they're being messy and flawed, because it means this isn't just "my faves are getting closer in the background yippee" but that their relationship is potentially an actual part of the story, and that's how you get The Good Stuff!! we wouldn't have had meaningful character moments like noelle finally standing up to queen if queen hadn't tried to control noelle and just listened to her from the start, or susie comforting ralsei with her bloodied hand if he'd told her and kris every detail of the full prophecy the moment he met them and never kept any secrets. if all the hints towards a flower shop dark world turn out to be true then it's pretty clear the story is building things up to make those future character moments hit, and considering we still don't know what happened with the dreemurr divorce at this point, chapter 5 seems like a perfect opportunity to dive into all of that.

plus, as sweet as susie's bond with toriel is, I honestly think susie seeing this side of toriel needed to happen. a lot of the fandom's complaints about toriel right now boil down to her not being the "perfect mother" they thought she was, and what bothers me about that is toriel was never meant to be that kind of character. toby has said that she's not the classic video game protagonist's mother who sees you off on your journey and you can come home and visit any time, and nothing changes and she never has any substantial character of her own. in undertale she literally handholds frisk through the tutorial, she becomes the first boss in her attempt to protect them when every other human left her care, and once they leave she won't let them come back or even call her phone because she can't face seeing them knowing they'll leave again and likely be killed. she's more than just the mother figure of the game, she's her own person with likes and dislikes, hobbies and flaws, and a past and trauma she can't overcome until the best ending.

we've only seen the tip of the iceberg of her history in deltarune, but that same principle holds true: she isn't the perfect parent you return to after each day's adventure, who gives you butterscotch pancakes every morning and never has any real part in the story because that isn't the intent behind her character. she mentioned her loneliness back in chapter 1, kris has secrets and problems they aren't letting her in on, asgore is being relentlessly inconsiderate of her boundaries, and for all susie's praise of toriel being a good mother, I think that house of cards was going to fall eventually. my hope is that, like her blowing up at ralsei ultimately bringing them closer, susie being able to see toriel as the imperfect adult she is but one who does genuinely care might help them build a stronger bond in the end too.

I think I always knew that if soriel ever inched closer to being canon there'd be discourse about it, and toriel slander is unfortunately nothing new. people are just being annoying about it currently and it sucks when I genuinely love what's being built up here!!

anyway crossing my fingers for a scene where toriel invites sans to the festival before she gets thrown in the bunker/he gets sent to undertale/the roaring happens/all of the above 🤞

we decided to answer this in brief and limit ourselves to three recs each or, as evidenced by past failures to answer this same simple and straightforward request from other people, we'd spend forever quibbling about our choices and never actually post the dang thing. here, in no particular order, are some good jumping off points:

trill's recs:

1) @snickfic's baby, you're gonna be the one that saves me, aka my fave fic (technically series, it's got two parts) in this entire fandom. in which liam gets knocked up in the mid 90s by someone who's not noel, to noel's intense anguished jealous heartbreak mild dismay. even if you're not really into mpreg this one is well worth it. the characterization is god tier. bal and i insisted that jackie, who staunchly doesn't like mpreg, read it and even she was converted.

2) i could be your lover, you could be all mine, by hapaxlegomena. a collection of unconnected porn ficlets. lots of extremely tasty stuff in here, i reread random bits of it regularly.

3) the D'YA WANT SOME? series by one of our own triumvirate, bal! im sure she's squirming in horror that im including it but it is by far the best, most well-written, most well-characterized, thoughtful, hilarious, hot, fascinating work in this whole fandom imo, and is a perfect intro to the whole concept of pre/early days oasis and what noel+liam might have been getting up to behind the scenes (as it were) before they were famous.

bal's recs:

1) Filmstar, an orphaned fic on Ao3. This one gets recced plenty but for good reason. It's very funny in a deadpan way and the Liam in it is such a perfect little weirdo. It's a great fic to start with, readable even if you don't know all the lore and whatnot.

2) outta sight and outta mind by lustmord. this author writes Trauma and specifically the brothers' trauma in a way I find endlessly compelling. (for all that Everyone Knows about their shitbag dad, it is still such an unspoken and often unpredictable presence in the room; you can't really get into them without tangoing with it in some fashion)

3) Let Me Be The One, by @savageandwise. absolutely fantastic Liam voice, this author just GETS him. I often think about this quote as a literal thesis statement for Noel's whole insane deal:

You think he's perfectly willing to allude to it in public if he's the one pulling the strings. Cause he thinks he's cleverer than the rest of the world. He thinks it's edgy and rock and roll when he does it. It's his brand of anarchy. And when you do it you're just stupid and embarrassing and determined to destroy everything.

jackie's recs:

1) Trying To Find A World That's Been and Gone by @storyshark2005. my colleagues graciously let me be the one to put it on my list because this is Thee fic. as we were all getting into Oasis initially, this fic was our constant companion and teacher, holding our hand as the fixation unraveled within us. it's a present-day fic that beautifully and masterfully unpacks the entirety of their relationship from the glory days to the estrangement and it is so jam-packed with research and details, you can just assume that everything that's being referenced is based on something that actually happened. in my opinion, this is where any new fan should start.

2) If I Had a Gun by @savageandwise. it's probably cheating to put another fic by this author when bal's already done it, but... I don't care lmao. in many ways we're splitting hairs because all this author's fics are worth your time. but I do hold a special place for this one because it so wonderfully captures the tenuousness of their dynamic at any given moment. how they could go from fighting to flirting to hating each other to needing each other in rapid succession. it feels so true.

3) Here's Looking At You, Kid by RedheadAmongWolves. don't be thrown off by the fact that this is one chapter away from completion, it's still totally worth it. the characterizations are great, the vibes draw you in, the UST is delicious. honestly, this is really meant to function as an overall author rec. there were several here I could've chosen. [ETA: this fic is now complete!]

Who is your favorite LO character? Who is your favorite LR character?

i feeeeel like my answers change every time i get asked this question JFDSKLAFJSDALK but that's okay because it just means i'm constantly finding new ways to analyze and explore these characters >:3

LO faves: Minthe and Hephaestus.

Minthe because she obviously gets such shit treatment in the comic and subsequently from the fanbase, but she's a lot more relatable than 99% of the characters in the plot, she feels like she has actual depth and a real character arc, even if that arc ended with an unceremonious whisper. It goes to show how great of a character she was that Rachel practically had to nerf her out of the plot, because it was often only ever at its best when she was present. Funny how as soon as she was written out, there was nothing interesting going on with Hades or Persephone anymore - the plot was literally so boring without her that Rachel literally tried to create a Minthe 2.0 through Leuce, and we all know how well that went /s

As for Hephaestus, nothing super specific, I just like his vibes. Maybe it's just my absent older brother issues, but I would love to just like, hang out with him, game in the same room as him, just autistic parallel play stuff, I think he would be into that. Only complaint is the design flaw of giving him running blades as the default prosthetic, that can't be comfortable for his hips and joints. But that's not his fault u.u and that's basically my only complaint about him which makes him a winner in my book, esp compared to the rest of the cast. He might not be in the comic all that much, but that was clearly to his benefit because it seems the more attention Rachel pays to a character, the worse they wind up being in the long run due to poor writing. Hephaestus is in the comic just enough, not too little, not too often.

So yeah, Minthe and Hephaestus are both 10/10 characters written by a 0/10 writer. They did the best they could... not Rachel of course, she did literally the bare minimum of "representation" which often came across as ignorant white knighting at best and blatant stereotyping / stigmatizing at worst, I mean that Hephaestus and Minthe did the best they could as genuinely interesting characters with unique circumstances and disabilities who were being written by an amateur Wattpad-level writer with a privileged white guilt complex lmao

LR faves (within the cast that's currently been introduced): Persephone and Dionysus.

I know, very different from my LO choices, esp considering Persephone herself within LO is literally one of the most insufferable characters by the end, but I'm frankly having a great time rewriting her in my own way, especially in regards to her specific role as the "wrathful side" of Kore. I know I've gotten questions regarding the interpretation of Kore as a DID system, and while that interpretation is totally valid, the angle I always approached it from was that repressed trauma and emotional bottlenecking. Obviously those two things are, in and of themselves, contributing factors to DID, so far be it from me to tell people they can't identify with Kore / Persephone as DID representation. It just motivates me even more to give her the character arc she deserves and never got. It's gonna be messy. It's even gonna be downright ugly at times.

But I hope, in the end, that anyone who identifies with her struggles will find closure and comfort in the resolution of her story. It's certainly a challenging tightrope to walk, between honoring the themes of her original myth, retelling a version of her that almost existed in LO (a version that I was hoping for and never got), and dissecting the implications of my own version of her throughout LR's narrative, but it's a challenge that I've been having a great time undertaking and all I can hope for is that I can meet and possibly exceed my own expectations - as well as the readers - in the end. This is Kore's story - it's also Persephone's.

As for Dionysus... he's just a very, very fun character to write, and someone who I had the advantage of introducing before he was depicted in LO. It wasn't intentional but it sure as shit paid off because even though I'm sure some will assume that this is my own re-interpretation of Rachel's version of the character, myself and anyone else who was there at the time can vouch that Dionysus was aaaalllll me, baby LMAO

All that said, we're obviously going at it from a VERY different angle than how he was tackled in LO, but I'm hoping people enjoy his presence in the story, especially as he becomes more involved (which is very, very soon wink wink) The roles have definitely reversed here with Dionysus taking on more of a "parental" role to Kore rather than the other way around. I feel like his characterization has only grown stronger in hindsight compared to what we got in LO, especially where he's one of the only characters who beat LO to the punch and wound up being in a sort of arms race with Rachel's depiction ─=≡Σ((( つ•̀ω•́)つ

Drawing Sette is surprisingly difficult, largely because she is a child and children have weird proportions. I believe her range of locomotive movement isn’t too dissimilar from a standard human's, correct? When it comes to chairs, it seems like a large part of the issue is that it is uncomfortable for her tail to be angled around the ninety degrees for extended periods of time, given that it's normally shown closer to about 140 degrees? Her teeth are shown to be shark-like; built wholly to rip and tear, is this an art choice or narrative? Are her teeth closer to a lion's?

Also, since you said in your last response that Sette's brain is designed differently, does it effect her sleep? I believe her to sleep very little in the comic, particularly with how she leads Duane through the nights, so is this a choice she's making or a neurological difference? (I'd honestly have assumed that the difference, if any, would make her sleep more so as to better replicate the patterns of lions).

I was going to ask if she had any nonhuman tendencies, specifically instincts, but then I saw the panel of her doing a cat fall. So. Answer found.

Her teeth are unique to her; same number and configuration as a real 12 year old human's, but they're all sharpened to points. Even the molars have pointed tops. Girl's a meat eater. We'll actually discover why she was made this way in a few pages, it's nice and messed up.

Regular chairs are not her fave. She'd rather perch on something - the edge of a chair, a stool, whatever. She has uncommonly good balance. She also moves with more swagger, confidence, and purpose than your normal 12 year old. She moves like an adult, with no gangly awkwardness.

She can get by on little sleep if she has to, but she'd rather sleep just like everyone else. She's also a very light sleeper because in Sharteshane, you have to be. Kasslynian lions weren't the lazy predators of our world though. They were diurnal critters living in sophisticated societies and farming much of their own prey. They evolved hands for tool use and grooming that was important in mate selection. They didn't chase down prey either; they climbed up high, waited, and dropped down on their victims.

One problem Sette's sniff-oriented brain does have is it's made her pretty incapable of reading. She just doesn't get it, and she never will.

Hello there! I'm not even sure how to start. So I felt very disappointed by DA:TV, because of various reasons. Not trying to dampen the mood, I am super happy for you if you actually enjoyed the game! If you do not mind, could you list the things you liked/loved about the game? Help me see the "bright side"? Just gush a litte about it, I could use some positive input around my favourite gaming series of all time. :') thank you <3

Absolutely! For me, I think I always figured I was going to like this game, even if it wasn't my fave of all time? Trick Weekes always writes characters/quests that I like, and for me, story/characters come before anything else. I liked Andromeda, flawed as it was. Even if the gameplay was mediocre, I was certain I'd find something I'd like.

But the gameplay wasn't mediocre. It was actually really, really fun. I played Spellblade, and honestly, the gameplay might be a highpoint for me. I don't really like action gameplay, I tolerate it. I loved this, though.

The biggest thing that really sold me is the fact that the big choices in this game are difficult in a way Bioware has been trying to capture since Origins, but I don't think they've ever nailed until now (except maybe in Mass Effect). Even in Origins, when they had big choices like what to do with Connor, or how to deal with the werewolves, there was always a cop out choice. There isn't one in this game, so far as I can see. At the end of EVERY companion quest there was a choice I couldn't choose, something that made me wonder just what would've happened if I'd picked something different, and don't get me started on the endgame. The endgame was brutal :')

I love the characters, too! I do think some of the writing can get a bit campy or be a bit on the nose, I think some subtlety is lacking for certain characters especially in the beginning, but once shit hits the fan just about every companion has their gutwrenching moment. I felt for every single character in this game, during their act 2 personal quest moments. In all the other games there was at least one character I just couldn't care about, but even the ones that I thought wouldn't tickle my fancy snuck up on me. By the end, I loved all of them so much. I only wanted more.

I like Rook, too. I think I can see how their characterization might be disappointing, though. I think the key for me and my friend @sweetmage was finding the right Rook to play. We both had lots of concepts and while I plugged in the right one first, I know they struggled until they found the right one. Rook is kinda like Hawke in the way that they have a bit of personality already and a defined character path, which can get in the way of true RP. Once I stopped fighting it and let Rook be Rook, I liked the game a lot more, and I liked my character a lot more.

Then there's lore. Oh, lore. I have listened to or read every codex. I have a treasure trove of theories I keep locked in my head. All I need is a corkboard and some red string. Getting to see so many of those theories come to fruition? Things they've been teasing since Origins, that I picked up on when I was 12? Absolutely magical! Some of it I think they bungled--there's one reveal I've been waiting for for 15 years that I found in a note, not codex, on a bridge in Minrathous, no fanfare or anything--but the majority of it punched me right in the face with so much force I had to pause the game and do a little pacing. I won't get into specifics for spoiler reasons, but seeing all those little dots connect? seeing when I was right, and when I was wrong? SO euphoric for me!

A lot of the things I didn't like, too, like making the Crows less shitty--so easy to headcanon around, in ways that don't contradict canon! It's one of my favorite things to do, it feels like a puzzle to me, making everything that is for certain and everything I want fit together. That one, for instance, Zevran totally gutted all the shitty Crows, and left only the good ones :)

I will say, it's clear they were trying to wrap things up. I got the sense while playing it felt that they didn't want to leave any loose threads in case this was their last DA game, so that felt a bit rushed. But I loved it. To me it was a love letter, saying goodbye. Wrapping everything up in a nice little bow. I've always struggled to choose a favorite game in the DA series, they all do something I love so differently that I can't pinpoint one singular favorite, and I think this one is right up there for me, tied for 1st place with the other three games. Like DA2 and DAI I think it could've cooked just a little bit longer, there's a lot of potential for it to be a 9/10 game imho if they'd smoothed a couple of things out, but there's a lot in there for me to love.

Idk if it'll work for you, but @sweetmage was similarly disappointed until they streamed it with a friend, and then just having someone there to converse with it on really helped them to enjoy it.
