You can generate Sierpiński carpet (the 2D analog of Menger sponge) at home! I started with addition modulo 3 and some conditional formatting in Excel.

I left the modulus configurable. Powers of 2 produce simple tessellations instead of fractals, so the first viable fractal is A1=3. Here’s the modulus 3 image at 729x729 resolution:

This is the standard sierpinski carpet. But starting with modulus 5, higher primes are going to give us some trippy Menger-analogs with intricate self-similar geometry. Let’s dive in:

Not all composite numbers are duds! Mod 9 is beautiful with its single order 3 subgroup.

But Mod 15 is not so much a fractal as a self-similar glitch. The subgroups of order 3 and 5 are all jumbled together!

Modulus 29 with 707281 cells. (That’s 29 to the fourth power!) And that’s the limit, because Excel is running garbage collection nonstop trying to compute any more of the image. Excel 2010 was limited to 2GB of ram and we are out. I call this collection of renders “seafloor”.

An AU to our Icebrood Saga, where Maolmuire becomes the Voice of Jormag instead of Bangar.

Beset by whispers during the party's overnight stay at Still Waters Speaking, Maolmuire steals Caladbolg in a desperate cry for help to be his own person, but is unable to find it in himself to slay the sleeping Maelmordha like Jormag urges. Nonetheless, the Dragon's primary objective is complete; They use the mesmer's unnaturally strong connection to the Dream as a conduit through which to invade it. The whispers spread through the network quickly, and a large chunk of the sylvari population defects to the beast's cause and marches North.

Maol's own generation, the Broken Dreamers, who awakened following the Pale Tree's injury at the claws of Mordremoth's servant, make up the core of this army. Born with physical deformities and strange Dreams that bestow incomprehensible, hidden or otherwise warped Wyld Hunts, they covet purpose and place their faith in Jormag, who issues them their own Hunts. This elite honor guard call themselves the Reclaimed Dreamers, and serve zealously under the Voice.

They’re mostly the same personality wise, Tanner is less sneaky than Felix and a bit less hinged, Fractal is less reserved than Locus but still “the quiet one”, Jason is more divorced than Wu. (still heterosexual 😔)

actual designs are based on gold colors, also some math concepts. Fractal was named off of the idea that fractals are infinitely introspecting, it has a similar vibe to locus of control, though fractal kind of embraces the idea you can’t control anything, just account for patterns. He’s into worms and philosophy. I haven’t decided if he took his own eye out or if something happened to him.

Tanner is named after tangents, I was specifically thinking about this example I saw about how tangents are used to calculate how far to building an awning to keep the sun from hitting the windows behind it. I also wanted to lean more into the cop thing/knight facade Felix has. He’s less of a knife guy.

Arc is just connecting two points (aka the other two morons). Only realized after writing this that Jason is one letter off of Mason. Its to reference Jason and the argonauts not just random. I imagine him being even more sappy than Wu, he has some lofty ideas of being able to be normal if he just gets far enough making money doing merc stuff. Visually based on fencers and diving suits, I think he tends to be their stealth guy, sort of a “get in from an angle they don’t expect” thing.
