It's funny you say that because I Never Should Have Gone Ziplining actually is my favorite episode of that season, and if I were to go and make some sort of "favorite episodes list" (which would be so hard to do) it would at least be in the top five. It takes so many things I enjoy (mockumentaries, blowing little things hilariously out of proportion, the jackin it in san diego song) and mixes them together.

The other day my coworker was telling me a story about something and he said "to make a long story short" at least four times and all I had to fight not to smile because it reminded me of Kyle.

Season 16 in general is such a good run of episodes. Sarcastaball, Raising The Bar (Cartman's mobility scooter just kills me), A Scause For Applause, Obama Wins, there's so much gold to pick from there. There's something hilarious in every episode. I just watched Cartman Finds Love again the other day and the part where he sings to Kyle in the stadium had me cackling.

I like that you posted a whole bunch of seasons, for such a long running show South Park has tons of really great episodes. Even season 1 still makes me laugh. On the dvds each season 1 episode starts with Matt and Trey having a fireside chat that was, to quote them, a real hoot and a holler to watch.

The most nostalgic season for me is season 8. My first episode ever was Butt Out (the part where the boys immediately start smoking to not be like those anti-smoking teens is what made me a fan of the show to begin with) and after that I would watch episodes as they came out On Demand.

OKAY THANK YOU!!! It’s such an objectively good episode and people who don’t enjoy it honestly baffle me… but I am also a big fan of mockumentaries. I really wish I could be more decisive but I just love so many seasons too much to only pick one! And they’re all so good for different reasons, you know? Like some are just objectively hilarious, some I love more for their tight storytelling. I dunno man, say what you will about Those Bastards, but they know what they’re doing, and I think they’re only getting better with age.

You know, sometimes I wish I had watched the show growing up, though I’m sure my parents would have put a stop to it the first time an episode gave me a nightmare (I was a sensitive child lmao). Still, I remember a lot of the boys in my class really loving the show, so I got little snippets through cultural osmosis.

this may be just absolute word vomit but like. hugeeee agree w ur post abt how this fanbase tends to treat queer headcanons and even canon queer rep. i genuinely thought elena was 100% transfemme because people kept calling them peter's wife and calling them she/her only but as far as i'm aware they still use just they/them in general (have not finished apotheosis yet but i'm aware of elena and how they're treated by the fandom). transfemme headcanons are treated like the end-all-be-all of representation, even when (in this fanbase at least) they're typically only slapped onto guys that are vaguely gnc and then those characters are watered down to being "the girl" and being submissive and shy or peppy and bubbly all the time. huge reason why i'm not a fan of transfemme kian headcanons because i have not seen a single one that is given any thought outside of making kian the "woman" in any ships he's put into. i've seen a little bit of discussion and thought given to transfemme ashe, but outside of a small handful of posts, he's mostly just delegated to being "the girl" of the prime defenders. i've even seen transfemme troy in fics but even that only turns him into a silly peppy girl for some reason??

part of me wants to say that some of the mischaracterization comes from. i don't want to say a place of privilege where these (typically) kids are generally accepted or tolerated irl and generally don't understand the harm that can come from their views on these headcanons and canon queer characters in general, but . it kind of feels that way sometimes!! being trans isn't just about slapping on a new set of pronouns and immediately having people treat you how you want, it's about re-examining your entire life through a whole new lens, telling people who you are, facing rejection everywhere, people trying to coerce you out of being what makes you comfortable, etc. etc. there's so much more to it than just. saying you're [insert gender here] now and having everyone be okay with it. its!!! so frustrating!! i could talk about this for hours but i fear i would just get mad. sorry for the inbox rant i need to go to work now you don't have to answer this if you don't wanna but i just wanna say. huge agree on all of this and its nice to have someone else in this fanbase who like. generally seems to care about queer characters outside of slapping new pronouns on a character and calling it a day

a lot of young people joining this fandom space have spent their teenage years growing up terminally online, for part of it even locked away from outside influences because of covid. and this might be a little america centric but many of these kids have also never really known a world in which gay marriage wasn't legal, in which the internet wasn't lit up with rainbows during the month of june. theyve spent so much time in twitter echo chambers telling them what to think about right and wrong and they haven't really gotten the real life experience to know the significance of some of the things they're saying. i dont fully blame them for it; theyre young, theyre learning and experiencing things for the first time, and with big topics like this if you arent given the proper resources it can take a long time to finally figure it all out. god knows it took me forever to get to where i am now. its just frustrating as an adult in what Should be a primarily adult space being surrounded by kids with very loud voices and opinions about very sensitive topics misunderstanding their importance completely.

i worry sometimes tackling the topic of how this fanbase treats transfemme headcanons, cos I know there is a general lack of good women characters and especially transwomen in a lot of media, and jrwi is a podcast that up until recently consisted of only men. i feel massively under-educated to be the one talking about this issue. but i also feel strongly that pushing characteristics that are often downright misogynistic onto canonically male characters is absolutely not solving that problem. and turning gnc/nonbinary/genderless characters into women isnt solving it either.

you are most definitely not a bad person for shipping two fictional characters, even if you did ship them with the large age gap. these are fictional characters. they don’t care. they’re like barbies. you can do whatever you want with them truthfully.

people tend to forget how common age gaps are. my parents have an age gap of two years, and on a more drastic scale, my grandma and her second husband had an age gap of thirty years. in the last few years i think, there has been a significant shift of thought that even interacting with people older than you is weird. which is incredibly damaging thought process truthfully, but also carries into fandom spaces where people now see age gaps, even small ones, as disgusting and gross.

i can see why someone would be weirded out by an age gap of fifteen years, but what your friend is doing is rude. she shouldn’t police your fandom experience just because she sees something as strange. if she doesn’t understand where you’re coming from, i wouldn’t try to explain it to her. just choose to have fun in the fandom despite it.

the most important thing i can say though is that you are not dirty for liking a fictional ship in a book series, even with the age gap. i saw you only ship beetress in the pre-sotr canon and that’s fine! i totally understand that, and you should continue having fun in the fandom through that, no matter what your friend thinks.

Alexander H— and the Merlin Story

So almost anyone who has talked to me about The Night Circus has been treated to my pet theory that Alexander is Merlin, which I’ve never really explained. I’ve changed this slightly based on my latest reread, and I figured it was time to finally write it down. My theory is no longer that Alexander is Merlin. It’s that Merlin is Alexander.

So, first off: the story of Merlin in the Night Circus is usually there as a metaphor for being trapped. Widget tells the story to Poppet, and they have a conversation about whether it’s such a bad thing to be trapped somewhere (which is heartbreaking because they’re 8 at the time of this scene, but that’s another post.) It also comes up later, when (spoiler) Tsukiko intends to imprison Marco in the Bonfire.

Tsukiko doesn’t call it the Merlin story, though. She calls it the story of the Wizard in the Tree. And Kiko always, always knows more than she is saying. Now that could just be that — it could just be about entrapment and confinement. But the ground is soft and I’m here to dig.

Here are some facts about Alexander:

He doesn’t have a shadow

He doesn’t interact with the world as others do (as a child Marco never manages to be as silent as him in museums; at the party to celebrate the 13th anniversary of the Night Circus Alexander doesn’t stir up the rose petals littering the floor as everyone else does)

He is very, very old (though not immortal)

He is always grey. He’s introduced as the Grey Man, and he’s never associated with colour (aside from maybe the black cradle he sends for the twins, and the black rose at Tara’s funeral. However, when it’s just him everything associated with him is grey.)

Alexander has seen the decline of magic in the world. This is inferred, I grant, but he’s very dismissive when Widget says that there’s still some magic about, as if to him it is nothing. And although we never actually see him do much magic (he binds Celia, manipulates Tara, and teaches Marco, but that’s all I believe we see directly), his power feels present.

Following from that, very few people remember his name. Is this the manipulation Marco picked up? It could be. It could also be that he’s not fully there. Furthermore, his name isn’t really Alexander.

He is, at heart, a kind man. (This isn’t relevant to the theory, I was just surprised by how often it showed up. Anyway.)

I have always taken these things to mean he attempted what Hector did, but much more successfully. He disdains what Hector tried to do, though — he’s uninterested in immortality, and unimpressed that Hector attempted that. And so, I posit: what if Alexander did this to himself not as a choice, but because the other option was being a tree? What if the tree is his touchstone, just as Celia and Marco’s is the Circus, just as Hector doesn’t have one and is therefore diluted? A smaller area, and presumably stronger magic (assuming this is long ago when magic was more than it is today), would make him more able to interact with the world than any of the other three. This explains his lack of shadow, and his minimal interaction with the world.

It’s unclear how old Alexander is; the only real clue we get is Widget at the end saying that “if I calculated the ages of everyone I have behind this proposition, the total might trump your own age.” That doesn’t actually help that much, because we don’t know how many the Circus number, and theoretically Rêveurs could count amongst that number. So he’s very old, but human. I have just now realised that Hector is one of his first students, which means he can’t be that much younger, so what I’m about to say won’t hold up with this revelation but hey, we got here already so I’ll keep going. Trees can live a lot longer than a regular human. Trees can lose branches in the way that some parts of Alexander’s history are lost to Widget. Tree growth is non-linear, much like the circles and overlaps Widge sees in his history too.

Okay, back to things I won’t immediately poke holes in myself: Alexander lived through the downfall of magic. And what if that’s because it happened to him? I do think this makes Hector the beautiful student he told all his secrets too, which is again another post for another time, but the tale it has become doesn’t have to be the tale of how it started. Hector is, frankly, awful. He’s a horrible man. Can you see him imprisoning his teacher to get more power for himself? Easily. Now Alexander isn’t much better, but he claims he was a romantic “in his youth”, and also, when he gets the chance to be he is so often kind. He tells Celia she’s an Angel. He takes Marco out of an orphanage for his own ends, yes, but also to give Marco a better life. He does care, deeply, about Marco. He tries to save Herr Thiessen. He has many many moments of small kindnesses throughout the book. Can you not imagine him trying his best to share his knowledge of magic? Can you not imagine him settling for more knowledge by way of a challenge, instead of enacting revenge?

(Hey look at that, Alexander’s kindness did turn out to be relevant!)

There’s also something about young Celia pointing out that Alexander is to him as Prospero is to Hector. I don’t know what to make of that — perhaps Alexander’s true name is just old, and would draw too much attention. When Marco summons him, he inscribes symbols in the shape of an A, though. The Night Circus feels like it takes place in a world where true names have power.

In conclusion: I think Alexander is the basis of the Merlin story, and textually there is little that denies that. I hope you’ve enjoyed this freshly ploughed ground; feel free to plant seeds in it should you wish.

Roy tells him to stay still so Roy can tie him to a bike and use him as a mush-dog for a morning, he does.  (Roy wasn’t expecting that last one to work if he’s being honest. It was only once he’d watched Jamie wrap the rope around his own waist, then blink at him in earnest expectation while he stood frozen in bemused perplexity, did he realise the depth of the hole he’d dug.) So Roy had thought that following the simple instructions of, oh say, a recipe book, would be well within the little prick’s range of ability.  Jokes on him. “You measure the chocolate chips with your heart man.” Roy has his hand locked around Jamie’s forearm, forcefully preventing him from emptying the entire bag into the mixer. He knows that if Jamie actually wanted to break his grip he could do so with ease, so it says something about his higher-order thinking that he just pouts at Roy instead. “No, Muppet, you measure them with a fucking measuring cup. It’s right there in the name and all.”

So, I've been spending a lot more time on Twitter because there seems to be a more active Hellaverse fanbase on there, but one thing is irking me...

Someone will follow me, I'll follow back, and then they'll message me saying hi. I respond thinking, "Oh, a fandom friend, yay!" After that they'll ask if I want to see the art they're currently working on and OF COURSE I DO. Then they show me and ask if I want to commission them...now...I get it, it's rough getting clients, and in some ways I respect the hustle. However, it is just so disheartening to learn that the only reason they followed and messaged was not for friendship, but for business. It just sucks.

Has anyone else run into this on Twitter? Is it a regular occurrence? How does one make friends on that app???

Whenever I've thought about the pipe dream of writing a novel it's been some type of thriller/murder mystery with a Gond Girl level twist. That's the fantasy of course but I don't think I would ever attempt to write anything original.
