Life Series Recap: The Penultimate Round.

I have to apologise. I was wrong about what I thought the wild card would be. It was not just skizz and Mumbo coming back to revenge kill everyone… it was fucking MY HERO ACADEMIA WHAT THE FUCK GRIAN!?

Martyn immediately understood the assignment and you should watch his perspective. No, I will not explain why.

Anyway, here was everyone's superpowers:

Grian - got the power to copy other powers, makes sense since he'd know what all of them are.

Scar - got the power to ride anything and to punch Jimmy ten blocks away. This was my first clear sign that the powers were pre chosen despite grian pretending not to know who got what.

Lizzie - could make everyone blind, good for escapes and traps! Perfect for lizzie

Jimmy - at will Invisibility. Was this just so he could hide from people who wanted to kill him? Most definitely.

Pearl - flight! Hermes Pearl cannon let's go!

Scott - can transform into any mob. Definitely just done to see his reaction to becoming a chicken.

Impulse - teleportation. Very good for traps in a smart person's hands. 

Bigb - summons 4 Creakings. The confirmation that these were pre chosen. No way Mr Creaking gets a creaking power by chance.

Cleo - goons! The zombie can summon the dead! Perfect that skizz and Mumbo died first then, those suited idiots have big goon energy 

Etho - rocket jump. They gave a mace power to someone who can't use it. Oh Deer.

Bdubs - Slow time. Also he can make it day at will. That second one is the important one to him.

Tango - super speedy! Perfect for a coward!

Gem - astral projection. Gets to spy on people, Gem Loves That! Unfortunately she also has to talk to mumbo and skizz…

Joel - triple jump. Speed bridgers dream. 

Ren - polymorph into other players. Perfect for a Trickster… but ren is being nice the season so he just ends up collecting his friends like Pokèmon 

Martyn - Super Sonic hearing. He made martyn a listener. If martyns new lore isn't him breaking free of Watcher influence after all this symbolism I will actually riot.

Anyway, breakdown time:

The Final Gals (Cleo, Scott, Pearl, Impulse, Etho, Skizz, Mumbo)

Oh goodness where to start

Pearl continues to suck at traps. What is happening this season?! Did that trap on Gem work? Nope! And when she has a good way of insta killing Tango using crystals, does anyone listen? Nope! But hey, at least she gets to fly like she wanted back in secret life… I mean she had to have that part shown to her by grian and she wasted her mace but …. Uhhhhhhhhh

Speaking of wasting important items we get the most disappointing anti climax of the entire life series as Impulse loses the totem falling to his death in a manner that he had numerous ways to avoid. At least he managed to find a guaranteed way of killing people with that obsidian box trick. He got Gem, Tango and Joel with it. He would have gotten ren to as his tendency to knick people's faces landed him in a case of mistaken identity. Good thing he called them all of since he and Ren are allies and apparently kissed necks. Martyn was kinda passed about that. Wonder why

Bigb is also friends with Renwood and the first one trusted with their super powers. They do form a plan to trap greens with the full combo of all three, but unfortunately that falls through. But bigb does get another trap opportunity to drop someone into the big hole at cake tower, but Ren is too slick and Lizzie is too red so that falls through too. But hey, he definitely got Scar on that dripstone pitfall! Oh wait no that was grian oops sorry bigb no kills for you. 

No wait! Bigb got Scars dropped mace! That was good! Woooooooooooo go bigb!

Anyway

No traps for scott either I guess, well not if you count him killing gem, but that was a team effort. But Scott doesn't trap people, he creeps on them! And now he can do exactly that, but as a chicken!

Cleo gets goons. And sure, those goons were very lippy (know your place Corpse has now been added to my lexicon) but they were great! They rendered grian speechless with their lame insults, who wouldn't be speechless if your dead friends came back to call your tower small? Mumbo also went absolute beast mode on everyone. He killed grian effortlessly and got the credits on killing Joel, Tango and Ren. I guess Mumbo is actually a top tierer when he doesn't have to worry about dying

Skizz may not have gotten any kills, but he did the world a service. He blew up Joel's hideous awful, no good car. Well done skizz.

The Fam (Gem, Joel, Etho)

When not crying over his hideous car, Joel was killing people for blowing up his hideous car. I Kid I kid he did stuff not motivated by his car this session like…. Insult people? Nah that's just a Joel thing. Kill Scott? No, that's also just a Joel thing, or maybe a revenge thing. Be confused? Nah that's definitely a Joel thing…

He has a way of killing people that involves wardens, that's cool! Unfortunately his biggest enemy is Pearl sooooooooo

Speaking of being enemies with Pearl, Gem! …. Wait what do you mean Gem didn't reiterate how much she hates Pearl this season? What do you mean they barely interacted? WHAT DO YOU MEAN THERE WASN'T MORE JEWEL BOX DRAMA!?

No no there was drama! Gem definitely still hates everyone else, even if she doesn't even acknowledge Pearl's repeated attempts to kill her. She definitely hates the other members of the final girls, each and every one of them tries to murder her. Even Etho! Heck, they succeed. 

Sure the initial plot by Martyn involving a game show, 5 Creakings and two bigbs was over complicated and ridiculous, but the much simpler solution of keep Impulse in a box and swap Gem in to be hit by swords was very effective, both in killing Gem and acquiring her bloody bloody vengeance. 

As for what she did with her power, yes it made her Infinity harder to kill, but it also massively increased her paranoia and mistrust. The irony should not be lost on Gem complaining about everyone's disloyalty while just DECIDING to hate on the most loyal team.

Her power also let her talk to the dead, introducing us the schrodinger's goons, as Gem paradoxically complained about having to talk to Mumbo and Skizz constantly while also complaining whenever they were summoned by Cleo.

Speaking of Mumbo, Skizz and Cleo, let's talk about Grian. Despite claiming to be part of the family, he certainly doesn't act like it. If anything he spends most of his time hanging with Scar, showing him the world on a magic carpet ride after stealing Pearl's power…. Only for him to then be turned into a drop ride without a seat belt. All in good fun tho. Too much fun, if you ask grian! He made fun Powers for his friends to have fun with and now they won't kill each other! Despicable! (Something Something put that in your Watcher headcanon)

To fix this he enlists Gem and Joel to kill skizz and Mumbo so he can speak to them and get them to kill tango. Gem fails to mention that she already got Cleo to let them kill tango, considering its Gem this was probably for revenge reasons. But revenge would ultimately be Cleos, who unsurprisingly didn't take kindly to having her goons stolen and had grian murked. Only to then be murked in turn by grian. 

Oh also no idea when to mention this but Gem confirms she doesn't care what happens to anyone on her team apart from Joel, and even then she's found with him being stabbed since it means they could murder together.

And she wonders why no one trusts her.

The Tuff Guys (Bdubs,Tango, Etho)

What Was the comic relief up to this week? Not a lot. Bdubs gets excited that he can sleep before he… gets it in his head that sleeping with reds around is actually dangerous. 

And when he's not mining for trap materials he won't use or fishing for Skizzies, Etho is failing repeatedly to hammer nails and trying to kill his…. Sister? Daughter?... family.

Huh, that was over pretty….. quick 

Oh no.

Yep Tango was easily the star of the show this session. His power made it super easy for him to engage with everyone's favourite shenanigans, Fucking with people! He was zippin’ around taunting everyone about how invincible he was

And well you can't say he was wrong. Lizzie's attempts to blind him all failed, he was able to tank Impulse dropping him off Mumbo Tower and he was able to outpace Grian when his powers were stolen by him due to Grian’s lack of expertise…. Skill issue.

Hell, go to tango's perspective right now and Watch the first attempt made by THE ENTIRE SERVER INCLUDING HIS TEAM MATES to kill him.

 Impulse teleports him into webs, which he gets out of as grian slows time. He then almost runs into Lizzie but is able to dodge before being Blinded. A few minutes later he accidentally runs into a Web and is caught by Martyn. Tango throws an ender pearl to escape before martyn can blow him up, almost killing scar in the process. Bdubs slows time. Grian notices tango behind cleo and tells her to move, she starts too but stops as tango runs in front of her and she tries to Trident him, causing grian to hit them knocking both their shots off. Martyn and Etho accidentally tag team to force tango into skizzes path, martyn getting him to four hearts. He then bloody matrix dodges skizzes sword swing (seriously how did that not land). Martyn tries to use a Creeper but a wind charge knocks it upwards, giving tango just enough time for time to return to normal and for him to run out of the Blast zone. Actually, insane play.l

Unfortunately for tango, you can't run your way out of obsidian. Or being stabbed. Or being exploded by creepers.

The Bamboozelers (Jimmy, Lizzie, Scar)

Let's play the game of who was the confident bammer today!

Not Lizzie, that's for sure. Is this the most failed traps in one episode this season? Maybe. Yeah, trying to trap places with suspicious barrels or where people who have spectator Mode live are not the best ideas. Neither is trying to trap Scott in general.

Speaking of Scott, Jimmy is obsessed with him. What else is new? Turns out however that even while Invisible Jimmy is no match for Scott's uncanny ability to see everything. Bad news for Jimmy and his trap game but good news for us as we get to see what it's like for an invisible man to be chased by an angry scottish chicken. Tango also calls Jimmy handsome so not a full loss for him I guess. 

Oh and in case you're wondering, no Jimmy did not have any luck killing anyone else. He and lizzie were very good at forming catchphrases tho

And I guess Jimmy did knock martyn into Bdubs’ tower to be killed by Scar…

Oh yeah, Scar had confidence this session! 4 kils!

While he wasn't riding all his friends. Unsurprisingly his words are not mine. He was smashing them. Yep nope that's worse.

He hammered bdubs’ face in and banged Martyn and Scott off the mountain. He seemed particularly eager to kill Martyn, maybe since he took part in killing Gem and Pearl said she would fly him around if he zeroed in on Scott. Surely this had no lasting consequences for Martyns continual survival….

OK I've done this trick three times. No ones falling for it. You've watched at least one prospective, Martyns dead. Sucks to suck Littlewood

Ren Wood (Ren)

Oh Ren, what a day eh? Every trap he tries fails. He accidentally obliterates bdubs, he has no friends AND his wife died. He may have kept his legacy alive for a few minutes by taking his DNA, gaslightibg the entire server into thinking he survived, but in the end, Martyn Littlewood is dead.

Yes, Martyn. An end game member since the beginning, out third…

Skill issue.

And like Martyn was doing well! sure he almost fell in a hole, but he Ninja reflexes his way out of it! And yeah he failed miserably to gaslight Scott but… Well it's Scott. He gets a pass… damn did he kinda suck this session? /j

…oh also all his traps kinda sucked. He failed repeatedly with those crystals, and surprisingly no one Jimmy was of no help in that endeavour. He also bumbled his own attempt to kill someone in the Creaking forest with Bigb by getting distracted when Impulse ALSO came to him looking for people to murder instead of just doing one murder at a time. He may not be a mean gill anymore, but he still has the memory of a goldfish

So here's to Martyn, he got one decent kill this session and died to Scar and Jimmy. This man won two seasons ago.

As for Ren, he is joining the however-many-Gs. That means that not only has everyone on the team been allied with everyone else at least once, but also that officially 9 people would have been on this team. That's half the bloody server. Greedy.

But more importantly…. Canaries. I've often said that the canary curse isn't Jimmy dying first, but is actually Jimmy death acting as an omen for the end (yknow like a canary) The only time this isn't true sorta was secret life, but Jimmy did die right before the Literal Apocalypse so I say it counts. But he's making it the the finale this season. For the first time. And so right here, right now, I shall declare the canary curse 100% officially broken.

I mean I can't since I have no power but like shut up

Joel's celestial symbol being a car isn't complete crack and actually might be a good idea.

In Fast and Furious franchise, one of movies' climax have the characters strap jetpacks to a car which is strapped to a military aircraft in which two characters drive off and are sent into orbit. Yes this is thing that happens and yes, it somehow does perfectly capture the narrative of joel's victory and what it brings to the celestial symbolism.

I have never watched the fast and furious movies, all i know about this franchise is this scene and that it's about family and that's all you really need to know. But still, i shall yap.

The Fast and Furious movies are a perfect intertextual lens to view the Wild Life season and Joel's victory. The franchise has two highlights to it: the fucking spectacle and the interpersonal relationships. Did I enjoy the mechanics of wild life? Not particularly but I enjoyed the spectacle; the rush of I don't know what the fuck is going on but I'm here for the ride. Did I enjoy the storylines? There won't many clear and strong storylines this season as much as there were ever-resonating character beats that I ate up like it was the last supper. (JUST LIKE IN FAST AND FURIOUS)

Pearl and Scott reluctant allies and healing, BigB and Cleo healing, Etho's slut arc, Bamboozlers overcoming their character's persistent struggle with loneliness together, whatever the fuck treebark is doing, pearl picking her champion in impulse, grian losing his two wings. DESERT DUO DIVORCE ARC IS OVER? OMG DESERT DUO DIVORCE ARC IS BACK ON. Bad boys finally kill scott, shinyduo situtionship (going insane over them- i can't wait for more of them), tango and bdubz as angry wives and of course: The family.

Gem and Joel's alliance was the most stable alliance in the season. We made jokes about the 4Gs as they became the 5,6-7 Gs. They never knew who they truly could trust. Mumbo and skizz' paranoia might of been a joke but grian's curse did wipe them out in the end, martynn has forever ruined any trust in future alliances after limited life (especially given how he planned to betray ren in third life...) so i did not have any faith in treebark lasting. I don't need to explain tuff boys, etho was cheating on them to their faces and bamboozlers came close but any bamboozler fan will tell you how anxious they were that something would ruin a group. Look at Timmy on the high that he could finally win and break the curse, always running off carelessly. Scar, who was so desperate to win grian's favour that he was spilt between him and bamboozlers. Lizzie, who wanted to do anything but die alone but multiple times in the series, could not find her boys.

But gem and joel were always there for each other, their trust and love in the each other displayed for the whole server to see in the centre of the map (the most dangerous part). Not only did it help each other, they solidified so many other alliances that were shaky for so long (adopting grian when he's alone coz no one deserves to be alone, giving the Gs a common enemy to unite against, "we are bamily"). This perfectly encapsulates the fast and furious thematic core, we have no idea what' going on but we'll make our last stand together.

Very long-winded post, might come back later to fix it (i haven't had the chance to explore joel specifically and what this victory means for him) but even though it ruins the celestial aesthetic, the car for joel is so perfect. If u need it all celestial, the shooting star works pretty well in adjacent but it's so perfect for the wildest, most scuffed season to ruin the aesthetic of the life series BUT STILL BE THEMATICALLY COHERENT.

I have my complaints for this season and it did take me a while to decide how i wanted to approach the narrative of this season. Genuinely the more i think about it, the more i love the season.

bdubs is the son of cinderella, joel is the son of jack (and the beanstalk), impulse is the son of beauty and the beast, scar is the son of sleeping beauty, etho is one of the charmings, grian is the son of the cheshire cat, mumbo is the son of humpty dumpty, bigb is the son of the march hare, martyn is the son of the mad hatter, pearl is the daughter of the queen of hearts, gem is the daughter of rapunzel, skizz is the son of the swan queen, jimmy is the son of alice (in wonderland), scott is the son of the little mermaid, cleo is the child of pinocchio

tango is the son of the evil queen. i was having a lot of trouble with him; i had a bunch of other ideas, my favorites being the little match girl and the fire fairy. it felt really out of place for him to be from a more obscure fairytale while everyone else are the kids of the classic grimm tales everyone’s heard of. it also makes it more fun if i want to use the evil queen for something.

some of them are pretty obvious, but feel free to ask about any of my choices! i’d love to ramble. i did write character bios for everyone, so maybe i’ll post those once i have all my designs finished. (i also have some other minor characters planned, like the other emperors and evolutionists, but i don’t really watch much hermitcraft so i would love ideas for the other hermits!)

i have some plot ideas, but nothing really concrete. i have a LOT of projects i’m working on right now, but i do wanna give this one more focus because it’s one of my favorites!

Oooooh fun question!

So there are a few answers to this:

Background/minor ships: Just like False and Ren kind of exist in the background of House of String, Joel and Lizzie as well as Tango and Zed exist in the background of this universe. They'll never be main couples but they are definitely together in that universe

Casual, not-totally-platonic ships: In We Were Shy Etho and BDubs have a kind of friends-with-benefits style relationship that I imagine shifts back to just friends when Etho and Gem become exclusive. Similarly, there is going to be some history between Pearl and Mythical Sausage back from the Empire days. I don't want to commit to anything specific because I haven't written that chapter yet, but there is a plan that their history isn't 100% platonic. Not in an angsty ex way, but more like they are friends who made out a few times

Mort de L'auteur Ships: I believe literature belongs to the people who read it. If you want to imagine a ship exists in that universe, go for it as long as its existence could reasonably align with the canon story! Is Ren poly and also in love with Martyn? Sure, there's no textual evidence to indicate he couldn't be. Are Imp and Skizz together? I imagine it would be hard for Pearl to be neighbors with Impulse for 2 full seasons and not notice that he had a long distance boyfriend, but maybe you have a cool story for how that comedy of errors happens so she never realizes they are together. Are there Empires ships I never mention? All I ever said was Pearl didn't have a lot of examples of successful relationships around her, but not none, so go crazy. Basically I'm trying to answer your question as an exercise to talk more about my fun ideas for my stories, not as the authoritative source of what is true and not in my universe. The story is as much yours as it is mine. Go wild.

Canonically single: With the above point, I do however think that Cleo and Keralis are both canonically single in this universe

The Scarian Problem: I will readily admit I don't watch Grian or Scar and I am aware of their existence almost entirely through fandom content on tumblr*. So I would never feel like I could write a relationship between them because I haven't seen and don't plan to consume the primary source material of their content. But the way that fans shipping Grian and Scar's characters seem to have legitimately affected their in real life interactions is a real source of inspiration for the main conflict in House of String. So the idea of Grian having really complicated feelings about Scar up through the end of season 9 could very well be happening in the background and would REALLY fit the themes of the story. For example, my take on Grian in the We Were Shy stories is that he is a Planner™ who likes to be in control. And while he may also love to create chaos, he is so aware of how actions and perceptions shape a narrative. So he organizes all these pairs for Double Life and then Mumbo goes and tells him "actually I can't be in your next games, sorry!" So now Grian has to reshuffle people and to make the math work he's with Scar, who he totally doesn't sort of kind of maybe like but liking him would be very complicated so he can't like. But being Scar's soulmate is fine. It's fine. He'll manage. He's a professional. It's his improv game for god's sake. But Grian quickly realizes they can't just be soulmates. He can't just be soulmates with the guy he beat to death to win the first games. So he concocts the BigB story line to disrupt things. And Scar roles with it because at least he's a professional and can ham up a story and improvise effectively. And so these 2 do this dance around each other for years. None of this is canon to my stories for all the reasons I said above, but the pieces are there for anyone who wants to run with them.

*Let me tell you, the exile arc is WILD to see when basically the only hermits I regularly watch are Pearl, Mumbo, and False. I have no idea whats going on, why Jevin is in love with a fish, or how any of this came to be. It's like watching a burning ship slowly pass in front of my peaceful harbor.

“This series went from being like ‘it’s hardcore with a gimmick!’ to ‘it’s like battle dome in here!’”

so because it has been 3 years since our beloved traffic series has started, i figured a good way to celebrate would be going back and watch 3rd life from the winners pov.

this post will basically contain notes from the 1st episode that my brain has entirely/somewhat forgotten.

if you have not watched 3rd life FULLY this is will contain spoilers! i feel like thats a given, but i'll put it here anyway.

(i was thinking about making this post just for funsies but then i checked the date and realized that it was actually 3rd life’s 3 year anniversary TODAY. fjdkjfkdjd I SO PLANNED THIS. TOTALLY!)

EPISODE ONE: Grian plays Minecraft… With a TWIST

. this is the first series Grian’s officially played using the proximity chat mod.

. mentioned briefly at 2:55, this is Grian’s first hardcore series he’s ever played in.

. the first person grian meets up with is BigB!

. Grian only sees RenDog once in his first episode.

. Grian was originally going to base somewhere in the flower forest (closer to where Scott and Jimmy eventually live) before basing with Scar in the desert. However, once he started building, Grian immediately disliked it, and called it the ugliest thing he’s ever built.

. Grian gives his flint and steel to Scar, which he uses to burn down Etho's dark oak tree.

. Grian hides two villagers, and originally wants to show them to Etho. However, Impulse, and Bdubs, follow, and the word gets out shortly after. *

. Scar and Grian were going to team up BEFORE Scar was killed. Scar first brings up having a monopoly on sand around the 12 minute mark.

. (not really notes but) Scar takes his shirt off for the first time at 15 minutes exactly. (i can’t believe im writing this smh)

. * Grian is invited to go back to the village after venturing to the sand biome with Scar, and trades his villagers. (he trades them for 3 diamonds, a dark oak sapling, a lava bucket, a juke box and disc, a bed, and some other lint)

. Grian explodes Scar at the 21:25 minute mark. There were 6 witnesses to his 'prank'. Impulse, Etho, Cleo, Bdubs, Tango, and Martyn. (my favorite thing about this is that Ren puts in the chat "Enchanting would have helped with that")

. Grian pledges his 1st life to Scar(didn't really forget that part, but i did forget that Grian loses his first life near the end of the series

. Pizza is first seen at the 25 minute mark exactly! (i think Pizza spawned in during a cut in Grian’s video. because i am only watching his pov, i do not know where Pizza originally cane from, this is the best estimate.)

. Grian abandons his first base in the flower forest at 26:15. This hole-in-the wall base didn’t last an episode.

. Grian and Scar originally wanted to have a monopoly over sand AND dark oak, and successfully chopped down the ‘only’ forest they saw. However, there was another not too far away from their base which ultimately ruined that monopoly. That being said, if the second dark oak forest had not been there, they might’ve had a chance at monopolizing dark oak saplings.

I remember watching 3rd life for the first time when the episodes were still coming out, and i’ve loved the series ever since. It was, and still is a comfort series i watch when going through tough times. I’ve met lots of people, and made lots of friends through this series, and although i don’t post a lot about it on my blog, i’m grateful to have found a community who feels the same.

I'm glad you asked because I don't think anyone else would.

I mean Star Rail has already provided to us what people who follow certain paths are like. All you gotta do is reverse-engineer them. Destruction -Bdubs, Lizzie, Scar, Tango Bdubs is the reckless person, very self-confident and tends to not think how his actions will affect others, even if they are his own teammates. Scar is in a kind of similar position, the main difference is in volume. Tango is here because of his rage and overall impulsive nature, that usually blow up in his face in destructive manner. Lizzie is here because although she does not outright display her anger and she is not particularly reckless, but she is very self-destructive and spirals easily. Hunt -Joel, Gem, Pearl. Joel is known for his killing sprees once he goes mad, especially during Last Life, he is determined to finish what he started, continuously hunting Scott, for example. Gem is a lot similar to Joel in that sense, she is not exactly holding grudges, but she has the right persistence, when she has a goal, she goes for it. Pearl is more similar to Joel than to Gem, she Does holds grudges and WILL ruthlessly hunt down people who stood on her wrong side. Erudition -Scott, Grian This can be argued easily, but allow me to explain. Grian started playing monopoly from the start, he makes his deals carefully, he does not like to act on a whim, leaning towards plans and schemes. Prefers to hold his cards to his chest. He did find Scar a hindrance in double life, but he acted strategically - to keep him close, so he can keep an eye on their health. He IS chaotic, but it does not mean he isn't logical and strategic (usually the problem is his two braincells that communicate poorly). Scott can SEEM like Abundance character and I can respect that, he sacrifices himself a lot. HOWEVER, he doesn't do it because he is just virtues like that, no, it's a high level social strategy play. That allows him to keep his allies until the end, it allows him to fly under the radar to make consistently into top 4. He is not making enemies and sacrifices his lives for a long run of survival. Harmony -Jimmy, Ren Pretty easy in my opinion. Both Jimmy and Ren, albeit in different ways always powerhouses when it comes to supporting and motivating their allies. They always have the strongest bonds on the servers (except Last Life when Jimmy got outcast-ed and was a sopping wet canary, and even after that Mumbo after becoming red hang around with him). Mostly because they are as loyal as it goes, commiting themselves to the people around them. Nihility -Etho, Mumbo, Martyn I mean. You know how Etho is, he is always sounds so tired with life, his favourite past time in the series are always has been going around doing stupid shit that doesn't have any meaning. Especially this is noticeable in Last Life, when he have been doing a lot of unprompted stuff. Mumbo is here mostly because of his tendencies to go around being absolutely clueless with scattered mind. Martyn is here for the shenanigans like Etho. Can be argued that he is more fit for destruction, but I just don't see it. Preservation -Impulse, BigB, Cleo They are not exactly my most watched povs, but from what I can gather all of them are mostly calm and patient, waiting on their queue. They posses the ability to sacrifice themselves for the benefit of their teammates (Cleo is much less willing, but she can if she thinks it's worth it (it just rarely does)). And boy they are defensive, they put up walls metaphorically and literally around themselves and/or their teammates, tend to even isolate themselves for protection. Abundance -Skizz I MEAN. Have you seen this man. He gives all of himself to his teammates and just whatever cause he thinks is right. Like the Heart foundation, when he was with TIES and decided to rival with Bad Boys because "they are bad and we gotta restore the justice". He gives away his life to his teammates. Again, Limited Life when he gave away his final hour to Etho because he knew he was done for and he wanted them to go further.

I don’t watch every hermit but did my best to give each one unique traits. I tried hard to battle same-face syndrome because it’s something I struggle with a lot! Not sure if I succeeded or not, but I think I at least made everyone distinct

Kinda going along with the first point, the places I got inspiration changed for each hermit. Some (doc, iskall, etc.) are basically how I interpret their skins, with a few other references thrown in. Some (tfc, joe, etc.) leaned a bit more towards how they look IRL. Some (gem, grian, etc.) were a mix, with some IRL traits like glasses and hair. Some (xb, xisuma, etc.) I just went completely buckwild and hoped it fit them well enough.

I tried to throw in references from past SMPs the hermits have been on. Some are pretty obvious, like the red king and the watcher symbol. Others are more subtle. There’s references from 3rd life, last life, vault hunters, EVO, Team Canada stuff, and past seasons of hermitcraft. If you look closely maybe you can find them all!

Zedaph is based off of a bighorn sheep, Doc’s horns are from a mountain goat, xB is based off of a flashlight fish

Etho, iskall, doc, and grian are all in the “fucked-up left eye” gang apparently?

Double Life SMP golden apple prompts

Just going to put these down before I watch ep5 for reference. Also, they're named after lines of "This Will End", because all good MCYT fic is based off of the Oh Hellos.

No, I am not afraid to die (it's every breath that comes before) -- Impulse and Bdubs are being hunted down, and one must eat the golden apple in order to have the strength to defend them both.

Heartache, I've heard, is part of life (and I have broken more and more) -- Martyn, holding a golden apple, threatens to kill Cleo unless Scott promises to sever their alliance and respect his soul connection to her. Eventually Scott promises to abandon her "until I'm red"... and the apple goes uneaten for now.

I can hope that this will end (with every line a comedy) -- Etho and Joel separately bargain for a golden apple, each saying they're going to kill the other, then it's revealed that they were planning to cure zombie villagers the whole time. "Were you ever worried?" "…No." "Aww, you trusted me?" "More like I knew I could just eat mine faster."

That we could learn to love without demand (but unreserved honesty) -- BigB receives a golden apple from Grian and debates whether to turn it over to Ren. He decides not to-- until Ren walks in on him holding it.

If I am not afraid to die (and you are crouching at my door) -- Jimmy can feel, deep down, that he's fated to die first. This is the way of the world. So he gets a golden apple for Tango, so his soulmate can have his own chance at life. Strangely, Tango doesn't seem happy about this gift.

And suffering is all there is to gain in life (then what is all this waiting for?) -- Pearl looks at her dog, thinks about her life, and then standing on the edge of her house, she eats her golden apple. Scott feels the regen and sees the hunger bar go up, and instantly knows what's coming. He tells Cleo to crit him with an axe, which she does just before Pearl can jump, neutralizing the apple's effect. She was betrayed at the last, but apple-less, she jumps again anyway to spite Cleo and they both lose.

I can see how this will end (in all its bitter tragedy) -- They've imagined this every day, talked about it at night, stewing and waiting while they eat and their soulmates take damage. Once they're both on their red lives, Scott and Cleo go to the Nether. They take golden apples. They eat them and jump into lava together, knowing they'll both die, but Pearl and Martyn will die first. They'll win this game like soulmates should: together.

I'll give you all I have to spend (and you'll give nothing back to me) -- Grain and Scar are trapped on a platform of wood that's burning up beneath them. There's no water bucket this time. The fall will deal 10 hearts damage. But, if one eats a golden apple and jumps, that one could survive while the other dies. Scar says that he knows Grian has an apple, because it was given to him by BigB. He tells him to use the apple and go live with the man who was obviously better for him, and only to take good care of the Jellies that survive.

I will wait for this to end (the back and forth, the battery) -- Bdubs is in the Deep Dark. Impulse is at home, tidying. Suddenly, Bdubs starts taking massive damage. Impulse eats all the food, but it's not enough. His hunger is full. He sees the apple, and eats it, giving them both regen. But it's not enough. Bdubs dies anyway, and all that Impulse could do is watch. He never gets to say goodbye.

For you, at last, to comprehend (the kind of love of which I speak) -- Scott and Cleo are building together when Scott finds a golden apple. They laugh and joke about it, saying that if they were normal soulmates they'd be pretty worried by it. They don't want to keep it around in case it falls into the wrong hands. Cleo decides to eat it, not for any nefarious purpose, not to rid herself of any bond, just to see how it tastes. And it is good.

my wild life thoughts part three (for episode four):

-when Grian asks for someone to do the Benny Hill, Martyn immediately starts singing lol

-Tango and Skizz didn't manage to get a kill, but thank goodness they managed to not die again 😅

-Joel singing ballet music as he slow-mo pirouettes across a bridge 😂

-Tango had so many failed traps, but he managed to not take himself out of the series, so i'm calling this session a success honestly

-there was a huge plot involving like half the server trying to kill Grian, and they spent so long gathering together and gathering materials, and preparing. and then Grian dies to his own tnt minecart and a second time to Scar shooting him off a platform, and Ren decides it's unfair to kill him a third time this session (despite him still being dark green and a valid target), and they abandon the plan. lololololol

-Mumbo having enough patience to get Scott with the dripstone hole, and then to wait with Skizz to try and get him again lol

-the Tangoisms are catching on; Pearl said 'dirtificate', Ren said 'eggificating' in front of Tango who absolutely loved it

-the back to the future bit was pretty funny i'm not gonna lie. and how quickly everyone picked up on it lol

-Mumbo (x2), Grian and Jimmy getting got by their own traps 🤣😂🤣😂🤣😂🤣😂

-pretty hilarious that when the wildcard kicks in, everyone tests the movement by attacking their teammates 😅

-Mumbo and Pearl's dynamic is hilarious. I desperately need them to interact more; in the life series and on hermitcraft

-Mumbo and Skizz being willing to deny Pearl's involvement with their trap when they could have very easily gotten her thrown out, and Scott's willingness to trust that Pearl really didn't hear them 🤣

-so dramatic of Grian to start the rain just before he triggered the wildcard, but i'm assuming that was so they could see that it wasn't just them that had stopped/slowed, but the whole server. did make for a very dramatic reveal tho lol

-there's some genuine hurt in Pearl's 'why' when Gem comes up and punches her straight away. I reckon she's a bit miffed and hurt that Gem didn't want to be friends with her this season

-Ren and Martyn just going straight to talking in slow motion is pretty funny, and their commitment to just keep talking like that for a decently long while

-poor BigB getting found out and excommunicated from the 5 G's when Pearl did the same thing, was also overheard by Cleo to be betraying Scott, and did so much more that BigB even tried to do is pretty tragic. hopefully he can convince them to take him back next session?

-there's a curious trend of grudges from previous seasons being held; Cleo against BigB, Gem against Pearl, everyone against Scar,

-the reveal of the secret cow was tremendous fun

-Ren's '...Grian. obviously' is an earworm that is going to be in my head forever

-Mumbo, is the moon fast?

-Gem and Joel are surviving so long by just not being idiots and it's kinda funny to watch their disappointment with everyone else

-Impulse just hiding in a hole the whole session is pretty funny. i watched a few episodes before I got to his and i was wondering where he was

-i wonder if Lizzie's decision to break the creeper spawner so no one could use it against them is going to be a good one or if they're going to need more gunpowder (or eggs. i'm pretty sure Jimmy used them all to kill Joel)

-i hope that Lizzie uses the sussy stew more cause that was fantastic

-Etho giving a 'life's tuff' tuff block to Bdubs (his teammate) is pretty hardcore lol

-Etho and Tango thinking Bdubs was robbing them is pretty representative of their alliance this season i think 😂

-I think everyone has just decided that they will make the most chaotic choices always

-Etho and Bdubs trying to help Tango get a kill but he's just so bad at anything aggressive is so cute

so i've just finished watching all the first episodes, so i wanted to give my thoughts on the first Wild Life session:

-so much fun i love it so much. i'm so glad they're all still having fun and continuing the series, and that Mumbo and Lizzie came back, despite dying early in Secret Life (i was a tiny bit worried they might get a bit dejected and pass on this one). also thrilled Ren is able to play this time; he's a blast

-there is a lot of mistrust going around which is very curious to me. most of it stems from previous seasons and has no bearing on what was happening at the time. Pearl straight up telling Cleo she expected her to betray her; Mumbo and Skizz not trusting Martyn, and then Grian; and then not trusting that Martyn just wanted to use their enchanter; the huge immediate aggression towards Scar when he came out of the mountain into Grian, Skizz and Mumbo's base; Mumbo not trusting Skizz (his teammate!) when he asked for someone to pass him a diamond; Scott, Cleo, Pearl and Impulse assuming Joel stole their cows, probably more i'm forgetting. it's definitely obvious to me that these people have learnt how the games work and learnt from the pain (as we do). i'm very curious to see if the general server mistrust grows, and the impact it has on everyone and the people

-i love JImmy, Big B, Lizzie and Ren forming a dnd party and Ren (in true bardic fashion) has a guitar within reach and is willing to break into song at the first campsite (this honestly might be my favourite moment from all the life series at the moment. the guitar within reach, Ren's beautiful voice, how much the others thought it was great. fantastic vibes all around)

-i really want Scar and Martyn to team up. they are both instantly mistrusted, to the point that both of them (in their first episodes, no less) expressed that if people are going to treat them like a villain, then they may as well act like it. if the two of them team up to take revenge on everyone being mean to them in a new series i think they would be a force to be reckoned with

-Skizz and Mumbo is a fantastic team-up. both very genuine people who are so funny together

-i hope they get the lag fixed, or that it was just from the size-changing mod and they don't have to deal with it for the rest of the series

-Gem and Joel's partnership - in the early days Gem is going to be a fantastic counterbalance for Joel; help keep him calmer and curb his wild ideas. But once Gem gives in to her own urges... oh boy

-does Big B know that he can go caving with people? cause he seemed to be under the impression that he had to get geared out before he could make friends and it would suck if he ended up alone all the time because it hasn't occurred to him that he can go caving with people right at the start

-double life thought: i know most people count Pearl as the winner, but did Scott technically win as well? cause they were the last pair alive, and died in the same tick. it probably doesn't matter at all, but i wonder about it sometimes (especially in how it would affect Martyn's lore but that's not canon)

-i don't think Jimmy has broken the canary curse. i subscribe to the theory that cause Lizzie died in the End, the Watchers weren't able to perceive it and then he was the first to die in the Overworld (i'm not counting Real Life as canon; it happened and i enjoyed it but it wasn't a full series and they were deliberately playing it silly as an april fool's joke. very glad that Cleo won though. hope they get a full series win as well)

-i'm glad that Tango and Skizz (deliberately) didn't team together, but i kinda wish Tango had ended up in a different group. him, Etho and Bdubs are fun, don't get me wrong, but a whole lot of the fun of the series is seeing people interact and work with people they don't usually. Tango and Jimmy was a top tier pairing in Double Life, and Tango is hilarious. i would love to see him branch out more and work with some more people

-there is more than just the wild card. Grian said he wasn't going to explain it, and i didn't notice anything else happening (but i'm also not expecting it to be much until they get to the late game). i think that there will be a wild card that affects the players, and then also something that affects the world? we'll see, i guess

-now that everyone who has played is playing (i'm pretty sure? if i've forgotten someone i'm gonna be sad) who is gonna sub in if needed?

-i love Mumbo's "that was sub-one intelligence mate" when they all fell 🤣

-i'm not sure what the purpose of including the creakings or whatever they're called? nevermind i just looked it up and they're going to be in the game at some point. weird. i'm not sure how i feel about creakings coming to minecraft though

-very glad they've got six lives this time. it will both allow them to not worry so much about mistakes and accidents (as evidenced by Pearl) and encourage them to take risks, which will be fantastic

last life session 4 moments and quotes that have sent me absolutely fucking spiralling into madness:

scar offering grian a deal for a life and grian just coldly saying "i'll give you that deal on pre-order. i'll see you later, scar". and when he's with joel martyn and jimmy. the way he says "he's all of a sudden very happy to make a deal for a life, that's convenient." oh my god oh my god. he's set on vengeance and is willing to stay as red if it means acting on it oh my god

CLEO AND LIZZIE. lizzie saying she knew she could never have trusted cleo and cleo just responding "aww... you could have. bye!"

cleo and lizzie seeing each other later on. "you're not running! that's unfortunate. maybe you should." and shooting at lizzie and calling her a traitor godddd

lizzie and ren forgiving bigb and talking about how the boogeyman curse changes you, how it turns you into something too evil for words. they understand. they're bonded by succumbing to that curse now (in contrast to the southlands who are... were... bonded by lives)

bdubs swearing he won't be red still by next week. threatening to kill tango if he doesn't give him a life. but even if it works next session, bdubs is going right back to red - he hasn't thought about grian. bdubs being red is protecting him from grian right now. grian won't kill a red ally.

out of everyone joel managed to kill the two people who are not only some of the most murderous on the server, they're also the only two who were already holding very strong grudges which they already planned to act on with murder. joel has unleashed something terrifying upon the server.

grian trying to kill mumbo so they can still be friends. "you're asking me to volunteer into being red?" "well, i didn't say volunteer." and mumbo accepting it but only if grian kills him fair and square

cleo's joy at being red. oh she is not mad at all at joel for killing her. oh no. she is GRATEFUL to him. she is going to rain down the fury of a thousand hells upon mr bigbst4tz2. she is happy that joel killed her. just... the two of them laughing whilst the rest of the forest fairies are stood there terrified

the forest fairies helped ren get a kill. they made a plan. they could have - would have - helped bigb if only he'd told them. cleo might have even let him kill her if he'd just asked! but he hid it for some reason! and oh boy has he made perhaps the most colossal fuckup in the history of this series by doing so.

we currently have a red from every alliance other than scott and pearl's. i think those two had better watch their backs once grian and cleo's grudges have been resolved

even if bdubs does claw his way back to yellow, joel cleo and grian is the best trio on this server and i will NOT be taking criticism on this. again, three of the most dangerous and outright murderous people on the server. and they very much intend on proving it. oooooh boy.

Here's some fun, non-to-lightly spoilery Rift AU thoughts for everyone!

So Ren in Rift AU is inspired by the faon interpretation [maybe closer to canon? I havent watched s7] of Mayor Scar mixed w the Red King from 3rd Life - Specifically, Ren is inspired by @mochiwrites's Scar in her Good Crimes AU [Which if you haven't read you ABSOLUTELY should]. I just love how she wrote Scar to be publicly one way and Privately another, and while I certainly don't imagine that Ren the King is quite as beloved, the inspiration is there.

Originally, Rift AU was tagged w Watcher Grian but I changed that because I want to mess with the Rift as it's own separate force and leave the Watchers for something else. I think the Watchers [And Listeners! *looks at Martyn*] function more as an ancient, ANCIENT religion, maybe even older than the ancient cities.

Also another original idea that's been put to the side for now is that the Warden was a watcher - I don't know where I was originally going with that idea, but it was my first pivot after deciding Grian wasn't going to be the watcher.

For anyone curious, and because I don't know if I'll name it directly in the stories or just leave it more ambiguous, I'm basing Scar's mobility issues and chronic pain off my own experiences with Cerebral Palsy, among other things. I have a very mild for of Cerebral Palsy that left me with a weaker right side and mobility issues and I absolutely wanted to make sure Scar was still disabled even if he isn't wheelchair bound. I imagine that he certainly has a wheelchair for bad days, but those would be like. Really bad days. The staff - to - cane that he has, made out of the same magical wood as his tree, is probably good for most of the sort of bad days.

Rift AU actually started as a way for me to explore sculk and ancient cities in fiction, which is funny given that we are now 17k in and counting with no mention of either. I have plans for it, but the story needed more work up than I was originally anticipating, which is great! I'm really enjoying returning to my roots with fanfiction, which is the whole reason I started writing Rift AU in the first place

Obviously I'm sort of picking and choosing what elements from hermitcraft [and the life series] I want to include in Rift AU but I am a little bit grumpy that I started writing it before I really fully understood the king plot [When I started, I had only watched Grian and Etho. Now I've caught up on Ren, Impulse, Mumbo, and Cleo, with plans to watch Pearl, Tango, Zedaph, and Doc next. I also really want to watch Beef and Iskall lol] because now I really wanna jam the whole royal council shenanigans in there and I'm not gonna be able to without probably retconning Scar and Ren's relationship which I refuse to do!

Obviously, Mumscarian and Treebark are in the story, and there's also going to be platonic Soup Group and platonic Team ZITS [bc. Skizz deserves to be here. I love him]. I won't tell you ALL of the pairings that end up in the story because a. I feel like we're be here all day but b. some of them are spoilers but I AM planning on having Solidaritek [Apparently team ranchers is only for platonic or something???] and ZedBeef and also Ethubs all make their own appearances. There might even be some like short stories following a few of the other couples in the story because I have attachments to Ethubs in particular. IDK if you can tell but Etho is my favorite hermit and I used to watch him all the way back in 2011 on his singleplayer world. I remember the boat dispenser. My baby girl.

One of these days I will genuinely type up an essay about my latent energy theory but in case anyone else is interested here's a very short tldr version: Redstone, Glowstone, End Rods, debatably sculk [I havent decided if it falls into the same category yet tbh], etc etc all power themselves via latent energy. That latent energy is compatible with electricity in some way, as evidenced by the fact that lightning rods can be used to power redstone machines, but it's different. More in between electricity and magic - either because it actually is or because it's not as understood by the people who work it. That same latent energy is the stuff magic feeds off, like is seen in Changing of the Season to help rejuvenate Scar. Whatever it is is old. Older than the Ancient Cities since they knew to build redstone machines to distract the Warden. It's older than the end cities, too, since end rods exist. Arguably it has always been and will always be around in some way.

Also this might not interest anyone else but thoughts on vampires and elves. Vampires are more closely related to Zombies, whereas Elves [Who are Fae, which means the Vex are included here] are more closely related to Endermen than anything [<- that will come up again] - and then the Warden and sculk are like. Very distant cousins of vampires. Sort of. Their trees connect somewhere.
