Sorn and Tai's Scene Breakdown

Spoilers for ep 9 of My Stubborn ahead.

The following is going to be my very long breakdown of the confrontation scene between Tai and Sorn because I think there is a lot of interesting things going on and it is sort of the culmination of 9 episodes of secrecy between two very close friends. One thing I really like about this show is how, the more times you watch a scene, the more is revealed and the better the performances become and this is a truly pivotal moment for Sorn. I think it is worth a closer look.

Ok, so, here we go. The scene starts at 35:42 with Sorn bringing food for Jun because he assumes Jun is at Tai's house--an assumption Jun hadn't corrected him on.

Tai is sitting while Sorn is standing and this gives Sorn the height advantage. It doesn't last long, since Tai stands up, but Sorn still goes with an aggressive, dominant approach, demanding to know where Jun is. And we know this approach won't work because of the camera angle. While Tai is even with the camera while he talks.

The camera is above Sorn, looking down on him as he postures. He is not the one in control of this confrontation, he just doesn't know it yet.

And, as per usual with Sorn, he is using very rude/casual speech here. Even when referring to Jun, if my listening comprehension is serving me right, he uses มัน [man] which is a very rude way to refer to a person. And Tai uses the same. In fact, it isn't until 36:28, almost a minute into the argument, that Jun is even referred to by name. Which is when Champ finally catches on to some of what's happening.

And Sorn is still all bluster, trying to bulldoze through Tai to get to what he wants but Tai has no obligation to defer to Sorn's demands. As the camera angle has already revealed, Tai, though he speaks softer and appears calmer, is the one controlling this exchange and his position is higher than Sorn's.

Tai calls Sorn out for his behavior and calls him a coward and this is the first break we see in Sorn's dominance and aggression that he uses like a shield around himself. It is also the first straight on shot of Sorn's face since the argument began.

Sorn then gives the same excuse to Tai that he has been telling himself for who knows how long and that he told Thanu. It's a flimsy excuse and he gets punched for it. The punch comes at 37:31, almost 2 minutes into the argument and I think it's significant that he is not getting punched because he had sex with Jun.

Mali's father in episode 8 kicked/pushed Sorn for touching his daughter and the teaser for episode 9 made it seem like Tai would punch Sorn because Sorn had sex with his little brother but that's not actually how the scene plays out.

Tai already knows Sorn has had sex with his little brother from the start of this scene and it isn't until almost 2 minutes in, when Sorn uses Tai himself as his excuse for not admitting his feelings for Jun that Tai punches him.

And this, right here, is one reason I wanted to write about this scene. Because, for 9 episodes now, Tai has been Sorn's excuse for both treating Jun well AND Sorn's excuse for not committing to Jun further. And that's convenient and all until Tai is standing right in front of Sorn, refusing to be his excuse; demanding Sorn to figure his shit out. I mean, to have your walking talking excuse to be noncommittal to just turn around, go up to you and say "Commit or leave, you idiotic coward" is a great storytelling choice!

We have these goods friends, on opposite sides of a fight, with Champ stuck in the middle trying to be the mediator, and Tai is not mad Sorn had sex with Jun, per se. He's mad Sorn played with Jun's emotions and used Tai as his excuse to do it. And while Sorn is established to be a stubborn idiot, he can't easily ignore what Tai is saying when Tai has been his excuse all along and now it is Tai himself taking that excuse away from him.

And now here, a minute after the punch, Sorn finally stops demanding, stops posturing, and shows his true, pathetic self. And, for Sorn, this is about as polite as we've ever heard him. He still refers to himself with rude/casual speech but he actually uses Tai and Jun's names instead of the rude pronouns he had been using up until this point.

And, again, Tai won't let Sorn continue lying to himself, Jun, and those around him. He demands Sorn be honest and the moment we've been waiting for for 9 episodes comes at last. Time stamp 39:10, nearly 4 minutes into the fight.

And this is the other reason I wanted to write about this scene. Because on my first viewing, this struck me as very easy and anticlimactic. Sorn continues.

Translation note, Sorn is back to referring to Jun as มัน [man] and what he actually says here is "I like him so much I don't know what to do." I'm not a translator or anywhere close but I know there is a constant debate when translating, do you go for the literal word for word translation or more of the intent of what is being said? Given that, I think this change in what Sorn said is interesting. I also think "I don't know what to do" is more accurate to Sorn, tbh.

And finally, we get the moment when Sorn actually hears himself what Tai, Champ, and the audience just heard and the dawning realization of what that means. And I really wish I knew how to GIF because Boat's acting here is subtle and great: the startled blink followed by the slight widening of the eyes in realization. Time stamp 39:57, go see some beautiful acting.

To me, Sorn's "fine...I like him" could have been just Sorn placating Tai, not a true admission. Like, the denial is strong in this one, and while Tai broke down a lot of Sorn's barriers during this confrontation, I still don't think Sorn was fully ready to say he actually likes Jun. So, it's like he told himself, "Just say you like him, you know you don't, not like that, but if you say it, Tai will let you see Jun," and so he half-heartedly is like, "Fine...I like him." But, once he said it, even if he thought he didn't mean it, it's been said. The words he's been stopping himself from saying, the feeling he's been stopping himself from acknowledging, it's out there, he's put voice to it and now that feeling, that truth, can no longer be ignored.

So, here, I think this is the true confession. There's so much more emotion in Sorn's voice when he says this, I think I even heard a hitch in his breath before saying it. And honestly, he sounds kind of devastated.

And it's so absolutely fitting that it is Tai that gets Sorn to this point because it was his imaginary version of Tai that would forbid any true relationship Sorn might want with Jun that Sorn used to deny his feelings for so long.

Time stamp 40:03, the fight is over. That's not even 5 minutes but it felt like a much longer scene. And what I first thought of as a little anticlimactic, I now see as a rollercoaster of emotions for Sorn.

So, if you're still here with me after all of that, let's just take this moment to appreciate a well blocked, well acted, and meaningful scene that, at first, seemed a little anticlimactic but, actually, was kind of a genius way for Sorn to begin facing the consequences of his actions.

TLDR: While at first, I kind of thought Sorn admitted his feelings too easily, after analyzing the scene more fully, it is kind of poetic justice that Tai, the embodiment of all of Sorn's excuses in how he treats Jun, is the one to demand Sorn own up to his own feelings.

This line! The entire post was hilarious and we loved it SOOOOO much that My Stubborn will now get a "Favorite Things" post just so we can give it the respect it deserves. But that line was hilarious and all we can say is same.

It's episode nine of My Stubborn. We all love this fucking idiot. We all want him to suffer so badly. We all want him to get punched. We all want Jun to make him cry. He is our favorite pendejo in all of the world. And I'm just here to happily report the colors and the stupidity!

The episode begins exactly where I needed it to as Jun rejects Sorn after he tries to initiate sex with Jun even though Jun sadly reinforces that he likes Sorn while he continues to wear Sorn's black.

Once they return home, Jun isn't even trying to hide how sad and disappointed he is over Sorn while continuing to wear Sorn's black (BECAUSE HE LOVES HIM!) and being the smallest guy on that couch.

But Sorn is too dumb to comprehend what is happening because he is a big dummy who only has big dumb thoughts. *muah*

Jun is grieving what appears to be his unrequited love as he looks at the black Balenciagas Sorn gave him all those years ago before he disappeared for two years and showed back up to ruin his life.

But, once again, the dots aren't connecting for our resident dummy even though he looks like he is on the brink of tears each time Jun rejects him.

He starts wearing gray as he blends his and Jun's colors. He buys Jun all his favorite foods. He is doing my favorite thing that idiots do; he is doing he most, so he doesn't have to do the bare minimum like just admit he likes Jun.

EVEN THOUGH HIS INSTA IS JUST PICTURES OF JUN!

So now he is making Jun God's strongest solider because how Jun can reject Sorn in this slutty gray tank is beyond me, especially when this dummy is making such a beautiful dumb face.

But the audacity Sorn has is unparalleled because he is back in black when he hides Jun IN PLAIN VIEW from Jom because he is . . . jealous? possessive? a fuckboi? I don't know. I don't understand dumb people; I just love them.

Jun doesn't love it though and after Sorn's continued wild ass behavior, Jun directly confronts Sorn, in their respective colors, and tells him if he wants to fuck Jom, Jom's grandpappy, and Jom's mom, that is his God given bisexual right! This is no longer Lady Gaga's "Bad Romance" because Jun is a free bitch, baby. No, we are in "Alejandro" and "Telephone" territory now.

And the pink lighting tells me Jom would be the best boyfriend to the Jun because he loves that kid.

But Jun, in black, still loves a fucking idiot.

However, he is strong enough to know that Sorn is a walking shitshow, and after Sorn physically tries to stop him from speaking straight facts, Jun realizes it's time to walk away.

I know, Jun. I know Sorn is so damn dumb that it hurts. I know loving a pendejo is painful. I know.

AND YET THIS DUMBASS DOESN'T KNOW A SINGLE THING BECAUSE HE STILL CALLS JUN THE NEXT DAY!!!!

I love that the girls are doing great while Tai and Champ are in the same bed friends situation, but at least Tai has a enough sense to punch Sorn for being so dumb to believe that he wasn't in love with Jun. Also, everyone this episode is light compared to our Black Brooder.

Yeah, look at the shoes Jun left behind instead of selling on eBay or Poshmark like a smart bitch who no longer is in love would have done. Jun loves you, and he left the shoes as a reminder that you love him too, you big effin' dummy!

Don't wear red now! I don't care about your passion!

Yes. This is more like it! Look like shit in gray.

And let Jun's avoidance of Sorn be the strength Champ needs to cut Tai out as well just like his reflection shows. Tai and Sorn are friends for a reasons. They are idiot soup. Deliciously dumb.

So the episode ends with Champ helping Sorn be a pretty sad boy in gray as he finally realizes he fucked up.

And the gray stubborn rhino he got as a gift for Jun stares back at him with judgement just like everyone in the audience is.

Thankfully, in the next episode, Sorn is looking like shit again in black.

But he is also light as he goes to look for his Heavenly Human Jun.

And Champ is behaving like a Regency-era mother who needs her smelling salts so she doesn't pass out from the amount of stupidity pouring out of Sorn while Tai looks like he is questioning why he didn't beat the hell out of Sorn the first time around.

I love this show so much.

Why I love knowing a tiny bit of Thai

I don't know enough Thai to know how the translations were leading up to this moment but I do know, when Sorn demands to know if Jun was with Jom and Jun's response is what does that have to do with you and Sorn is all "it has every to do with me" and then we get this translation... "Because..."

Oh, but I do know enough Thai to know Sorn said more than just "because..." He said "Because I am..." and then had to eat the rest of his words. You can't just go around declaring yourself the boyfriend of your sex buddy, now can you? LOL

We are enjoying this series way more than we ever expected. This episode was great!

In episode 1 of My Stubborn, Sorn tells Jun to "move closer" to him.

And Jun complies.

Resulting in mutual joy and new discoveries.

In episode 9 of My Stubborn, Jun moves away from Sorn's touch. He's in the same outfit as episode 1. But Sorn has went dark.

Their arrangement has stayed the same, but it's no longer a happy situation for Jun. Sorn is causing him pain, and Sorn himself is confused over Jun's response. BECAUSE SORN IS AN IDIOT.

Unlike last time, Sorn physically moves himself closer to Jun.

But it's not enough. Jun doesn't need just physical closeness at this point. He needs more from Sorn.

So he physically leaves the room. He goes to pack up the shoes. Both interactions in this shirt brought on new discoveries. But whereas the first interaction brought mutual joy, this has brought mutual pain.

In the end, he leaves both the shoes and Sorn behind.

I still think Jun should have sold the shoes, because that's a lot of money left in that box. But I guess that would cross symbolism lines into permanent break-up territory. We know this is more about Jun boxing up his feelings and trying to move on rather than not having the feelings anymore at all.

I hate that Jun is going through it. Really I do...

But I'm cackling with delight at Sorn's fall (and the beard).

I want to say "The rhino (Sorn) has been left behind, but at least he's admitting he's Jun's now. That's progress."

But that feels like an insult to the rhino plushie. We know he's judging Sorn too.

Sorn's tears next week? I'll get another batch of popcorn ready.

Ongoing Series - Thai

Knock Out (Fri WeTV ) ep 6 of 12 - I continue to very much enjoy this show, all of the couples have great chemistry, the plot is entertaining, It’s a solid sports romance and I adore a sports romance. Nothing not to love.

My Stubborn (Sun iQIYI) ep 6 of 10 - No no no. Sorn is supposed to suffer. This is not acceptable. Do not just give in like that! Oh thank goodness, yay! Confrontation, make him suffer, Junbaby! You go sweetie! Good. Good, suffering. More suffering is needed! Tai make him suffer too!

Reset (Mon iQIYI) ep 3 of 10 - Did Thada just buy his man a plastic bowl so he could eat his ramen as they walk down a street? Interesting choice. Also “workcation” = v modern word… so Thada must also be on a Reset? I do love that Thada is putting all of his cards on the table so quickly, definitely one who feels like time might run out and he has to get it right this time around. Thada is treating a relationship with Armin exactly the same way that Armin is treating his acting career. As I think you could probably tell, I am enjoying this very much. What a good show.

Memoir of Rati (Fri Netflix or YT) ep 1 of 12 - I was resistant to picking this one up, despite my love of both pairs. The title, intro music, and setting make me nervous that we won’t get a happy ending. That said, I am particularly interested in this time of Thailand‘s history and the complicated diplomacy that went on. And holy heck can GreatInn serve up some stellar chemistry.

My Sweetheart Jom (Fri YT) ep 6 of 12 - I continue to enjoy this more as it gets more plot heavy and convoluted. To be clear, that’s not normally what I like in my BL and certainly not what I expect from Thailand, or that Thailand does well. But there’s something about the way this show is paced that I'm enjoying more now than at the start. And we should be in the soggy middle. So, I guess... well done little show?

Pit Babe 2 (Fri iQIYI) ep 8 of 13 - Kenta Kim kiss! Yay!!! Chris’s epic eye rolls make me happy. However, this plot is Very Silly Indeed and I am very entertained. What a vroom vroom full of nonsense this is.

I Promise I Will Come Back (Mon WeTV) ep 5 of 10 - Oh what a lovely first kiss… touch… and so forth. I love this! It’s actually kind of special. How unexpected. (Ep 5A if you just wanna watch the moment.) I’ve said it before, there’s nothing wrong with the acting in this show. It’s the general story and script that’s troubling me. But my goodness all 3 leads are great.

The Next Prince (Sat iQIYI) ep 8 of 14 - It has been a bumper of a week and I’m grumpy, and unfortunately this particular show is bearing the brunt of it. I’m sorry, but the main couple are just so one note and it’s becoming quite trying. Something has to actually evolve with their characters, ya know? Now the sides …. very nicely done, give us more of them. 

The Bangkok Boy (Sat Gaga) ep 9 of 12 - It was a decent episode. But I’m really not sure about this show as a BL. It’s making me increasingly nervous.

Boys in Love (Sun iQIYI ) ep 7 of 12 - Just as I suspected, lots of nothing happening. Sports day. Whatever. (Always been Blue Team myself… just FYI.) 

SunTiny (Tues iQIYI) ep 1-2 of 10 - Look here, there’s a lot to like about this show. I like the idea of messing with standard misconceptions of top/bottom, and I LOVE it when the fandom hets and their dumb ideas of sex get the vapors. Blow their tiny minds, boys. Please. 

However, I am a little crushed that it takes a bodyswap for us to have a femme top. I hate bodyswap narratives. It’s one of my least favorite tropes. And I’m not sure this particular pair has the acting chops to carry this off. No skin off of MaxNat - good chemistry and decent actors, but to act like another person in your own body genuinely requires a level of physicality and verbal execution, a new way of holding the jaw and face to make believable. It’s not something that’s easy to do. Max is doing a slightly better job at it. He is certainly better at facial nuance and tone shift, but his physicality remains the same.

I love that this show is absolutely gonna mess with the worst of the fandom. That makes me really damn happy. Although it is dangerous territory for this pair to enter into and not a subject matter I expect Thailand to handle with delicacy. I do love all of the jockeying with linguistics and verbal pronouns and such. That is fun.

As of now though, I remain torn. It's gonns have to prove itself.

Eye Contact (Weds WeTV) ep 6 end? - I don’t like anything that happened at the back end of this show. And I’m not going to forgive it. I don’t like where the characters went. I don’t like where the relationships went. I don’t like what was done with the story arc. I don’t like the choices that were made by anyone. I am, to put it simply, cheesed off. The GL couple is the only good thing about this and they got practically no screen time. I’m tempted to say that this was originally slated to be a 12 episode and it stopped halfway through.

Summary

A promising start for a craptastic but delightfully edgy pulp derailed abruptly in the second act by miserable disconnected story arcs full of dysfunctional relationships, poor life choices, and every trigger in the book with no payout or attempt to resolve or address the resulting trauma. Including mine. I am seriously displeased. 3/10 

Ongoing Series - Not Thai

Ball Boy Tactics (Korea Thurs iQIYI) ep 3 of 8 - They. Are. So. Cute. I love them so much. No notes, absolutely my favorite thing airing right now.

Sweetheart Service (Korea Fri YT) ep 7 of 12 - How delightful that the sides got some love. That was charming. They went on a date. They are so damn adorable. Meanwhile our leads are the bestest boys. 

Moon and Dust (China YT) ep 5 of 6 - Yay biting! Oh this show is so ffed up and I love that. It’s so good. It’s so warped. It’s so good because it’s so warped. I am scared (for me and the show) but so pleased.

He is my rabid dog child and I LOVE HIM. Let him fuck bite his brother if he wants.

Revenged Love (China Mon Gaga) ep 1-4 of 24? - A remake of 2015's Falling in Love with a Rival. From China ON GAGA? What alt-reality IS THIS? No idea on the length, MDL says 24 but at 45 a pop, I'm wondering if that's correct, because that would make this the first full length CBL we have had since... well, Advance Bravely. But also, see the next section, this could be shut down at any moment.

And now, some thoughts:

It is so like its source, absolutely unhinged CBL. Snake fighting. So much smoking. Money throwing. Gifting boys. Gang rp. UNHINGED. What the actual?

At least this time the seme is established queer out the gate closet? Our baby boy is a bit of a loser. And the meat cute was way more modern BL. Of course seme is also truly evil, he’s openly queer and this is CBL so he must be corrupt in all ways. (I don’t make the rules the CCP does.) 

Of course I LOVE the doctor. (Also the psycho baby brother from Moon & Dust, did you clock?) I don’t think I’ve ever loved a character this much this quickly since Film was last on my screen. He is glorious.  

Anyway, I have no faith in this ending in a satisfying manner, or indeed ending at all, but boy am I enjoying this WILD ride.

Depth of Field AKA Hishakai Shindo (Japan Fri Gaga) ep 1-2 of 6 - The actor playing Hayakawa was in one of the Kiss shorts! Neat. Well we know he can certainly kiss a boy. Meanwhile, this is warped, a little creepy, and sort of messed up. And exactly what I expected from this IP. I like it, as I usually do with stuff from Japan. I’m making no guarantees on where this is going tho. Remember, never try to predict Japanese BL. Safer on the psyche.

The Sparkle In Your Eye (Singapore Sun Gaga & Viki) eps 9-10 of 12 - characters aren’t talking to each other or telling the truth. It's very sappy and heart wrenching and tiring. 

Important word on the CBL we are enjoying right now.

WRITERS ARRESTED! China’s Danmei Crackdown (also stuff on SmartBoom breakup, and the unprecedented popularity of GL pair LingOrm's Photo Shoot)

This has happened before. I said a little while ago that the CBL industry & online behavior keeps giving me 2016 vibes and that time period seems to be repeating itself. (Maybe all these do-over time travel BLs lateIy have been trying to tell us something?) I know this new spate of uncensored CBLs are only being distributed internationally but I still don't see how we can expect this to end well, especially Revenged Love. We are in Heroin Addicted territory and the dejavu is strong with this one. I am going to keep watching on the "get it while you can" theory, but I now wish I'd been bootlegging Moon & Dust. Revenged too. I may set aside some time to do so for... reasons... I recommend you do the same.

I Became the Lead in a BL Drama 2 AKA Zoku BL Drama no Shuen ni Narimashita (Japan Gaga) 6 eps - While I am intrigued by the manager side couple, I can't be arsed to add this to the weekly rotation. I may binge once it's done.

The Ex-Morning (Thailand YT) 10 eps - dropped half way through ep 3. I was just angry at it, at GMMTV, at the script, at the characters. That's not healthy for any of us. If rumors are to be believed, I'm feeling great about this life choice.

Season of Love in Shimane AKA Ai no Kisetsu: The Season of Love (Thai) 8 eps - Sequel to Kiseki Chapter 2 which I intensely disliked. I won't watch this.

Mission to the Moon (YT) 12 eps- Watching but I can't keep track. Too short, too many, too YT. I will report at end.

Loy Kaew First Love (Fri YT) 6 eps - Dropped at ep 4. Ended this week, trigger warning on that ending. Not recommended.

What in the stage makeup hell was that?!? Who okayed that? Did they use a sharpie?! I literally could have done better... give me 5 minutes and some eyeliner and blush... and not BLACK!!!

We were all excited for this episode to get Sorn's pain and yes we are all thrilled to get that but what I have seen the most is people absolutely losing it over the beard. I'm also losing it. Sorn even lost it (eventually). Who did that to him. I'm still laughing
