I can tell you exactly how the Timeless Child undermines the characterization of the Doctor, because it actually does.

First, we need to talk about mysterious characters. In a general sense, they can be broadly divided into two categories: mystery to others and mystery to self.

The mystery to others is, well, a mystery to other people, but is also fully aware of who they are and what their secrets are. This character can fit in any role, and whether or not any of their secrets are revealed really depends on the story: if they're the antagonists, the protagonists have a vested interest in uncovering their secrets, but if they're the protagonist, they may have an equally strong motivation to keep those secrets secret.

The mystery to self is most easily defined through the archetype of the amnesiac hero: they don't know who they are. Although the mystery-to-self character can be used in any role and in whatever story the creator wants to tell, they have a traditional role and story: they are typically a protagonist, seeking answers to their personal mysteries. The amnesiac hero wants to know who they are.

Now that we have defined this, explaining how the Timeless Child reveal undermines the Doctor's characterization is simple: The Doctor is traditionally a mystery to others. The Timeless Child is a poorly-executed attempt to turn them into a mystery to self character, that then doesn't commit to revealing the mystery.

Ever since the First Doctor debuted back in 1963, the Doctor has been depicted as fully aware of his secrets. Some of those have been revealed over the decades, but the aura has usually been there. The Timeless Child rewrites the Doctor as an amnesicac hero, with lifetimes unknown to her, but then declares that this is unimportant and the whole story effectively did not matter.

Prologue for my new fanfiction

Crisp leaves lined the path and crunched as leather boots walked briskly over them. The figure limped their way down the street, grasping their chest in pain. Wind blew furiously through the town as if it was angry at them. They quickly made their way to a library and stepped inside, their head pounding and stabbing pain in their chest. The librarian’s eyes snapped up to them, a look of worry falling over her face. She ran up to them and helped them inside, sitting them down at one of the tables. The librarian didn’t seem to notice them— a good sign, for sure.

She asked them several questions, all of which they replied as vaguely as possible. The one question they didn’t answer was their name. They simply looked down at the table in silence, refusing to reply. She sighed and stood. “Very well. We oughta get you bandaged up.”

One of my favorite choices the Apothecary Diaries made was making the Emperor a “normal guy” (as far as I know as an anime-only). He’s not evil. He’s not hindering Mao Mao’s journey. He respects the concubines.

If anything his lack of autonomy and presence as the most powerful person in the country further enhances the show’s themes of working within the confines of class and gender inequality.

The previous emperor was a horrible, horrible pervert. Okay, then this emperor only weds women of age… Until he’s forced to take his father’s precious wife due to politics. The current emperor reasonably avoids her.

Eunuchs exist? Bam! now the surgery is outlawed, but this will create a reduction in male labor around the palace.

The emperor clearly favors few women. Well, now he must recognize a concubine with a powerful politician father playing the system.

He supports Mao Mao toeing the line of social expectations for women, but hasn’t removed the law against women preparing medicine. It makes one think, if he wanted to, could he make the change at all? For every two steps forward, he’s forced to take one step back.

In this universe even the Emperor is limited by social pressure and the expectations of his station. His life and that of his children is out of his control, and if that isn’t such a compelling piece of world building I don’t know what is.

If that’s how the author twists the narrative of the Emperor you better believe her female characters dealing with women’s issues in this society are even better written.
