-"Just show them Timcanpy as a proof that you're trustworthy" OUTCH?????????
-Johnny: "i don't know if we should go there. It seems dangerous..." Kanda: "don't worry. everywhere you'll go with the beansprout will be dangerous anyway." Johnny: ". -Kanda Tsundere Moment (also: the whole manga)
BITES FIST BITES FIST BITES FIST???
Allen believes he's not going to make it out from this journey, that once he will learn the truth he might not be able to remain himself, to remain "Allen", regardless of if Nea take over, so he tells Kanda farewell, thanking him for the journey so far, but it's so obvious they all believe it will be the end of "Allen" as we know him
it fucking guts me. god.
-most frightening panel wtf
aand that's the end for now. a transitional chapter in between two arcs but a really good one. The separation between Kanda and Allen is really emotional.
and now, this mysterious library is on the horizon. Allen's identity is at stake. and this mysterious smiling individual (that shouldn't be Apo since he's been taken by the Noah, so maybe whoever the Librarian is and... this is a bad sign.)
and now. we wait.
i'm super hyped for the mysterious library though. Genuinely can't wait to see where it's going.
we're so back baby.

Love the composition here: Allen's cursed eye on the left, Lavi's eye-patch on the right. The bright white background contrasting with their shadowed forms, and cutting right through them. Gorgeous.
Kanda says, having repeatedly revived this entire fight.
The Kanda vs Skin fight is probably the least compelling of all the big fights of a very action heavy arc, and for good reason. We've gotten to the emotional cores of Krory and Lenalee already, and Lavi's will be put on display during his fight, but Kanda's still very much a mystery and will remain so for a while. We only get any emotional insight through these few lines, but they are very telling.

“Allen” is loved, in this essay I will
(This is about Allen’s bond with most characters, but the focus is on Mana, though the other bonds get talked about a lot as well)
I wonder how Allen learning that the earl is Mana/Mana did love him will be like
I can’t imagine it going in a fluffy direction because of well.. him being the earl and potentially bring about the end of the world and all that stuff, and Mana’s self-loathing for eating Nea is so intense he’ll flip out at being called Mana and all that. and I very much doubt they’ll go back to how it was, but I think he’ll remember, and it’ll be acknowledged that Mana did love Allen, it’s something Allen very much needs, whether to find peace, or to move on.
But DGM may be a tragedy, but I think it’s definitely not the “everything was pointless “SnK edgy kind of tragedy (Alma & Yuu for example, that was most definitely a tragedy and a pretty terrible one, but they found closure didn’t they ? They did spend that moments at Matel with their beloved and it was important for them, it was not pointless, even Lala after being broken, regains herself in her very last moments and thank Allen, so Lala and Guzoru’s promise was fulfilled, it was not pointless. It’s not a hopeless kind of story.)
I seriously doubt Allen (nor Mana) will get a happy fluffy ending (our best bet is a bittersweet ending), but this is important to him, Mana was always his most important and beloved person, he’s the first person who didn’t dehumanize him for his arm, Red didn’t have a single happy memory or a reason to go on before meeting “Allen”, but these three years at Mana’s side were truly happy ones, most probably the happiest period of his life (even despite his guilt at having hurt Mana), it was his reason of living, his reason to go on, the one thing he could never truly forget or abandon was his love for mana, his memories with him, his relationship with him and he was devastated when the possibility that Mana never loved him came up and Cross (who doesn’t know enough, as seen with the fact that he thinks “Allen” had no mask prior to Mana’s death ) basically confirmed it, if gently.
And Mana did love him back, it’s pretty clear from the 232-241 flashbacks that Mana had absolutely no idea that Red was Nea’s host (it’s even Red who approach him first, because of allen the dog’s death), they bonded because Red realized that Mana was crying inside and cried in his stead (and also for his own grief for Allen) and Mana was touched by that and tried to cheer up Allen afterwards, and also the whole conversation about Nea, the whole thing was extremely genuine, Mana say to Red that he wants to get out of the circus together, even before he receive brain damage and start confusing him and Allen, but in the latter interactions Mana is pretty sane, even in the confusion in the name remains and treats him as a human child, not a dog or something. Later on, Akuma!Mana say “I love you Allen” and not “Nea”, when Nea get awakened by Kanda, Mana’s eye/curse is the one to bring back Allen, and the fact that Allen’s name is called and that it worked will later be implied in the searching for AW arc to be the “bringing a loved one back from the dead by calling their name” that Johnny did for Allen, and it’s a thing that specifically works because of the “power of human bonds” and when you truly love that person, seeing as the millenium earl doesn’t do it himself.
in night 158, he wonders why he didn’t kill off Allen that night when Allen was a 10 yo, despite his existence being a nuisance and what was discussed here, like the fact that it was the earl’s left eye that opens in panic when Allen Walker get attacked, meaning it’s a Mana & Allen thing
The earl later rationalize it as being a reaction to the 14th within Allen, despite him having no idea (he spent the whole ark arc thinking it was just someone with the musician ability and not a host for Nea himself, and even thinks that it was Cross himself that was the musician, Allen only get attacked as someone associated with Cross), and he only learnt it when Nea said “good morning” to that Level 4, but yeah, a deep down part of him remember that it was Allen.
It’s also pretty clear that the one he thought of in the beginning is his son rather than Nea, because there’s a shift in attitude before and after learning that Allen Walker is the fourteenth host. You can see it in the fact that outside of the earl’s suit attempting to get rid of Mana’s attachment to Allen that night when Allen was beside Mana’s grave, he never showed much violence against the child. He go away after Allen exorcise akuma!Mana, he only send some level 1 after Allen in ch4 and go away, despite having stuff way more fearsome than level 1 and the earl himself being overpowered. and also in the ark arc (I’m too lazy to search for the chapters and images but he didn’t do much beside blocking allen’s attacks ), after “Allen” the fourteenth reveal ? He start choking him on sight, the whole intent of the MoK arc is getting Kanda to badly injure AW via innocence, and he was pretty scary (homicidal even) in that encounter when “Allen” was with Johnny, despite the earl wanting Nea back
It’s not an argument that he love “Allen” more than Nea, he clearly loves both very much (look at how devastated Mana was when he learned he killed Nea), but it makes sense that he’d go softer on what his subconscious thinks of as the disabled, extremly young and fragile child, and Nea who was strong enough to kill all the Noah except the earl and Road, and who the 3rd side think is strong enough to kill all the Noah this time around. But my point is not even subconsciously did the earl think of AW as Nea (at least before the fourteenth reveal in the phantom G arc)
So far, everything points to Mana getting killed for someone else’s agenda, the Noah (at least those who remember, and the others will probably too after remembering) want Mana to become the pillar even if it’s not stated how (likely how the innocence itself want to), the innocence want the heart to kill Mana, thus creating the pillar, the black order is basically either going for what the innocence wants to happen, or what the third side want to happen.
The 3rd side want Nea to kill Mana but in a way that won’t create the pillar, it should be kind of a happy ending, right ? but after “Allen” ‘s very soul getting taken over by Nea, they wants him to use “Allen” ‘s own body and hands to murder Mana, and Mana, uncomprehending, will watch as he is murdered by a loved one (whether the focus is only on Nea or if it’s also because the one murdering him has Allen’s appearance).
Allen’s not accepting any of these endings, so if it doesn’t end as the world getting destroyed (thus meaning everything all the exorcists and protagonists did was pointless) or Nea succeeding at erasing Allen and doing something “Allen” would never forgive himself for (implying everything Allen, Johnny and Kanda was pointless), I’m wondering what kind of ending will happen.
There isn’t much point to Mana being alive, having loved Allen and being the earl if his relationship with Allen doesn’t get acknowledged, even the “Mana only took on Red/’Allen’ because he was the host and never loved him/only saw Nea in him” absolutely doesn’t necessite Mana being the earl, Noah are random humans before suddenly awakening, so Nea being a Noah with a human sibling wasn’t weird.
Even with the Nea is one half of the earl plotline and the earl being too attached to Nea, you could have had the original earl split into three, with Mana being fully human (it wouldn’t even be weird, because the earl split unevenly, Nea had no Noah memory, and in Pandora Hearts, even though Alice and Alyss are twins, Alice was fully human and Alyss got all the mysterious powers).
So there must be a point to all that, authors don’t give pointless information like that, if it exists, then “Allen” is going to find out and react to the earl being Mana, and he’s going to want to learn how Mana felt about him, and even if at first the earl denies being Mana/having ever cared for Allen Walker, I think we all know what the real answer is, and it’s going to be acknowledged in-universe.
And boy does “Allen” need to hear that, he need to hear that.
Because yeah, “Allen” is someone loved and liked by many people, genuinely so and they’d still love him even if he was outwardly the rude ass bitch he secretly is deep inside (Kanda for example is pretty rude and impolite and is even asshole a lot of the time, but a lot of the people in the order and most of us readers love him).
While the politeness and Mana manners is something absolutely fake, the kindness isn’t, the stubborness isn’t, the compassion isn’t, the empathy isn’t, and even those less palatable traits of his are important and something his friends would still love. But the problem is that “Allen” doesn’t truly buy into it (and unlike other protagonists I don’t blame him)
As far as he remembers, Red was loved by nobody and he even thought love was something unattainable to him before that dog befriended him (and pretty much got killed off not long after), the first person to truly love him was Mana (even with Red’s guilt at causing brain damage to Mana and Mana confusing his name with the dog’s) and during his three years with him it’s pretty clear Mana treated him as a human child, so it’s not like he treated him as Allen the dog, and it was pretty clear Mana loved him a lot, even to the extremly distrustful Red/”Allen”, it was obvious, it was why Mana’s death devastated him so much. then Timcampy took a shine to him, Cross took him in, but towards all other people (except towards the earl who he only feels pure loathing against), he wore the mask of Mana.
From “Allen” ‘s point of view, they only liked the surface personality and would never have loved the rude, nasty, unlikeable Red who even caused brain damage to the first person to even care about him and ressurected his own dad as an agency-less machine to kill him. I’m pretty sure “Allen” think there’s no way anybody will ever love for real someone like him.
The exception being Allen the dog (dead and he feel guilty about it), Timcampy (probably on Nea’s side by virtue of being one of the musicians, and also died protecting him/Nea from Apocryphos), and Cross and Mana, “Allen” didn’t put his trust easily, but he thought at least those last two relationships were genuine (they were you moron), then Cross reveals that he took on “Allen” because he’s the host to the fourteenth and his goals necessite the erasure of “Allen” (true, he did take him on for that reason, but he did come to love “Allen” because the last words he left via Timothy are for “Allen” ‘s sake, saying if “Allen” doesn’t like his fate then his fate sure as hell isn’t going to end up like that, and to be himself and drop the mask Mana. It’s not something he’d have said if he didn’t personally care), and then come the suspicion that “Allen” ‘s beloved Mana most probably also only took him in because “Allen” was Nea’s host. When “Allen” ask this of Cross, the one who knew most about him and Mana, hoping him to deny it, Cross basically confirm it, if gently.
For “Allen”, there goes any hope of himself, his real self being liked, you can see his guard being extra up after that (it doesn’t help that Kanda, the one person in the order who wasn’t into the polite persona and that “Allen” wasn’t particularly polite with and even was sassy with started acting distant with him after the fourteenth reveal since how much “Allen” had left to live was not a lot, and also say some pretty hurtful things during PTSD episode), from the information he has, his fear that he’ll never truly be loved for who he is/he wasn’t destined to be loved is pretty much confirmed. And from reverse, we know his one wish above anything was to be loved.
Bizzarely, the one arc where “Allen” is feeling at his lowest, isolated and slowly getting taken over and after getting betrayed/exiled by the order, having an immortal overpowered Innocence after him and not in any position to make human connections, is the one where that belief is being/will be eroded.
In 222 we see that Cross care about “Allen”, he offer him comfort and say that he’d rather have wanted it be someone else who was the host and when faced with “Allen” ’s honest feelings despite it going against everything he did in many many years, he helps “Allen” in his goal to know the truth, and we see that the conversation helped “Allen” a lot other than the big clue to his goals, because his form was getting younger (probably indicating how his soul was slowly disappearing) and “Allen” was just panicking feeling hopeless, but when “Allen” say what he wanted to say, he stop his mental panicked flailing, regains his actual form, and it help him wait until Johnny say his name.
Honestly I’m pretty sure he is now perfectly aware that Johnny love him, he know how the calling for a dead beloved one’s soul works, it doesn’t work if the one doing the calling doesn’t truly love the person (otherwise the earl would say the name himself and just murder random people to put the akuma machine inside them), and “Allen” had just pratically MURDERED Johnny and Johnny’s reaction was “sorry I let my guard down” and then make the ultimate declaration of friendship, and you can see how “Allen” is touched and how badly he wanted to hear those words. When Allen try to distance himself for Johnny later on it’s not because he doubt that Johnny care about him, but because if Nea doesn’t murder the instant Allen get taken over for 2s, Apocryphos/The earl/The Noah family/honestly even the order (since the Johnny is now a traitor) will, and their reunion hug was so damn wholesome (that Tyki rudely interrupt),he’s also the one who didn’t know him as a kid who noticed that being impolite suited him much better and was glad about it and I’m going down with this friendship, heck they even had magic friendship bracelets that tase you ! other friendships could never.
(Honorable mention to Road and Tyki who also do care, even though they’re on opposite sides of a war and they were literally ordered to help Nea. And whether they wanted Nea back or wanted Nea gone for good, both endings result with the erasure or death of our “Allen”)
Heck even with a lot of the other people in the order they do love “Allen” quite a lot, and that despite the suspicion he’s someone who murdered Link to run away aided by the Noah (Lenalee saw that it was “Allen” in control when he used the ark so they know it’s not Nea), so if they love “Allen” despite that, they’d have loved the real and non polite “Allen” anyway despite his flaws. We know this because the science division was devastated and the exorcists minus the generals and Chaoji were devastated.
About Timcampy, he did take a shine to “Allen” quickly, the reason at the beginning was most probably Nea, but it’s hella clear that he grew to care about “Allen”, because when Kanda confront him about it, when he’s asked about if he’s truly on “Allen” ‘s side in this conflict, there should be no reason to feel conflicted about it if he only cared about “Allen” because he was the host and he reminded him of “Nea” so he won’t be sad at Nea taking over, right? But when Kanda bring it up he just burst into sad and quiet tears
Kanda is clumsy at communication (I love him) but I’m pretty damn certain it’ll sink in, they didn’t get a chance to properly talk until after “Allen” escaped via ark, but I’m pretty sure Kanda is getting to him, because
1)”Allen” opened up to him about the whole Apocryphos thing
2)he finally grieved for Tim’s death, although grief is something he forbade himself from feeling since Mana’s death
3)he got “Allen” to wait with him to reunite with Johnny and Tiedoll
4) he got “Allen” to talk about his past.
And it’s pretty clear from their interaction that he does care a lot, “Allen” you’re good at reading people I have faith in you, just accept people caring about you.
And depending on how well “Allen” remembers his backstory, he’s gonna state the obvious and go “well there’s your answer, of course he (Mana) loved you you braindead moron”, and he’s not gonna be impressed by “Allen” ‘s low self-worth.
This timing is making me certain about the conclusion
After the events of his backstory, he’d have never reacted well to the fact that the earl is Mana (he isn’t going to react well in this either but I mean way more bad), he’d never have accepted that the earl/mana did love him. But after “Allen” out of pure self-loathing take on the mask of Mana, basically deciding that “Allen” himself will never be loved, and/or that he doesn’t deserve to be. and only trust on the love Mana (and Cross, kinda, as well as Tim and Allen the dog) had for him, he does make other friends and people he likes, but that’s tainted by the mask of Mana and the fact that he’s never genuine, bringing into doubt whether they’d like the real him. But evidence that they care about him would never have been enough, because “Allen” was never going to be completely genuine and let his guard down, or he’d have thought he didn’t deserve it/it wasn’t real. then come the fourteenth reveal, even the little hopes he had get shattered (some of the best character developpement happen when charas are cornered enough), in the end, Mana never loved him, Cross never cared about him, and if these two who really knew him didn’t probably the rest too.
Then comes the Mystery of Kanda arc, the exact flaws “Allen” loathe himself for are present in Kanda.
Kanda Yuu is a hell gremlin child who is rude and impolite and cynical and an absolute asshole, and just like Red kicked Allen the dog hard for befriending him Yuu was violent towards Alma’s attempt to befriend him, just like Red tried his hardest to kill Mana inducing brain damage in a trauma response, Kanda decided to murder akuma!Alma because of his ptsd because boy he wasn’t alright after seeing what happened to Alma’s body. Just like “Allen” murdered Mana again in self-defense after he became an akuma, Yuu did the same when Alma tried to murder him after murdering all the scientists.
I don’t think he had the time to process that because he was busy not letting “Nea” take over, getting interrogated, trying to not grieve Kanda’s supposed death, but he can’t go on anymore in thinking that he doesn’t deserve and shouldn’t be loved because of those specific crimes against Mana, because he’ll punch in the throat anyone who says that about Kanda, and another important thing is Kanda was loved anyway, by Alma even (who act as the Mana parallel ), by “Allen”, Marie, and plenty of people in the order (Tiedoll, Lenalee, etc etc etc).
Woah only now do I realize how important “Allen” getting caught by Wisely’s eye thing was for his development. (He’s gonna realize that and drop the masks of Allen, and the mask of Mana, he’s kinda already doing it, his attitude (his speech when escaping via ark in Tiedoll’s carriage is even pretty casual, though the translator didn’t say whether that was the case with the interactions after) is not anything like his attitude at the beginning at the series). Then he get driven into a corner and the searching for AW happens, and his belief that people don’t love the real “Allen” get eroded, his belief that he doesn’t deserve to be loved get eroded, the only reason he still push people Kanda and Johnny away is because uh well people staying beside him are likely to get killed for it. Since he’s telling it to Kanda, he’s gonna have to think about his past for real while he does, not for reasons to self-loathe, not to remind himself to keep walking or anything like that.
Him coming to accept people and opening up is happening in that arc is kinda at a timing, where either he’ll realize it from sharing his backstory if his memories are precise enough, or where he’ll learn Mana is the earl (whether because Katarina will tell them that or because they’ll meet the earl on the way, who knows) and stuff will happen and he’s gonna get evidence that that bond was real
“Allen” ‘s gonna have to accept that Mana truly did love him, and by him I mean the child with a red arm that was the chore boy at that circus and that he later adopted, and when he(mana) was talking to him and saying he loved him (”Allen”), he wasn’t referring to Allen the dog, he wasn’t referring to Nea (though he did love those two others), he was referring to his actual son. And “Allen” doesn’t have the excuses he had earlier to not fully accept it, and believe into it properly this time, without guilt or “but”s or anything like that, and whether he does that before, or after learning that Mana is the earl, he’s gonna learn that either way, the way this story is going, and they’re gonna have a talk
and I don’t think for a second that despite everything about the earl subconsciously remembering it and that hampering his decisions thus meaning he still cared about his son, they’ll never get to talk about it, it doesn’t have to be a peaceful talk or one with a happy conclusion, but he’ll remember it

Some (too many) mental notes & questions about D. Gray-man!
(SPOILERS UP TO CH. 247 & sorry if the terms used are awkward esp. the localization of the manga, I read it in french!)
I recently re-read DGM as the new chapter came out. I stopped catching up after volume 22 years ago and I am so glad I re-read the series!
If it was already beautifully sad and cruel, the volumes 23 to 27 hooked me even more. Like other manga (eg. Witch Hat Atelier, Berserk), the panel composition was already beautiful in the previous volumes but I was fascinated through my reading. The attention given to hands in these volumes (like MHA) was mind-blowing!
The Allen-Kanda-Johnny-Link group (and now Tiedoll) works really well, I didn’t expect that at all! Oh, and the character development/decline of every character is great, especially Allen & Neah, Kanda & Link (and Cross and Road in those flashbacks?????).
DGM wouldn’t be DGM if the mysteries didn’t keep growing even more cryptic as the story unfolds, so I guess here are some notes and questions I’ll come back to one day to see if they are answered!
► Now that we know the D. in DGM stands for ‘Dear’ (I already sense the tragedy in the title for both Allen and Mana aaaaa), I don’t know if this was intentional, but Mana in front of the mirror strongly reminded me of The Picture of Dorian Gray, especially the end (I shouldn’t have read this scene late at night, I was spooked haha). The characters of Allen and Neah, shrouded in mystery, also encapture the elusive personality of Dorian Gray.
► Paying extra attention to all the parallels between the Ghost of Mater & the Artificial Exorcists Arcs was Pure Pain. I’m always amazed how far the details go and make (even more or a whole new) sense later on.
► Lenalee and Komui’s story touched me once more aaaaaa ► Miranda’s power is really cruel, I wish we could see more of her someday ;;
► Road used for super-human the word ‘choujin’, which also seems to refer to the concept of übermensch in japanese ie. the ideal superior man of the future who could rise above conventional Christian morality to create and impose his own values... NOW THAT IS INTERESTING.
Especially regarding Road and Cross meeting & Allen’s prophecy as the ‘Destroyer of Time’ (the fact he could ‘sense’ Lenalee’s dream and interact with it, Cross ‘death’ by Apocryphos hands, past!Allen’s mystery over his rejuvenated body, Apocryphos observation on ‘Allen’s’ long existence as a parasite, and so on …)?????????????
And could she have a link to Allen and Lenalee’s dream of the future?
► The overarching theme of humans, akuma, Noahs and even the Earl at God’s/The Heart’s mercy manifests in many little plot points eg. the Ghost of Mater (that could even foreshadow the whole Cross/Road meeting), Road dressing Lenalee as a doll, Lenalee and Miranda taking their suffering as the Innocence testing them, Link turned into a puppet, Crown Clown and so on …
► Could this be Campbell’s mansion Allen will visit in the next chapters… ?
► Reever’s devotion to Komui ;;;;;;;;
► Fascinating how everyone except Allen is at risk of becoming a Fallen One, despite everything he does ‘against’ the Order, God and the Innocence: it could be explained by the role he was given by the Heart now that we have a bigger picture And it is foreshadowed since the Suman Dark Arc:
-> When Allen says Suman betrayed ‘God’, the kanji for god is used (kami), but the furigana read as Innocence:
And Allen even says later the Innocence punishes sinners as God itself, devuring Suman from the inside like a worm ……….
-> While Komui says he has betrayed God and the furigana read as God this time:
I love the word plays in the original versions with the furigana (I wonder if this has a name?), another example:
The kanji for family, kazoku, is read as the english « home », which we always saw used to describe the Order as a comforting place to return to: the Order was never Suman’s home, he always longed for his family
► Will this ever be explained? That, and Cross's special bond to God or the Heart!
Also this????????
AND ALSO CROSS HATRED FOR TIMCAMPY???????????
► Could Cross be a Bookman?
Neah’s flashback mentioned an ‘excentric uncle’, so it could also be Cross, given how he remembers Mana’s smile from his childhood, I am Confused Or he could be their childhood friend, as his appearance in the flashbacks suggests he would've had the same age past!Allen, Neah and Mana would have, around 35yo? Idek anymore! Either way, he has an obvious hold over his age like past!Allen, maybe through magic or their nature?
Was the unknown language Bookman spoke when the Ark was disappearing in the sky the same Mana taught Allen? In Komui’s corner, we learn Bookman knew in advance they would synchronize with an Innocence when their mission began???????? Do they somehow have links to the Heart or Apocryphos? Are they from the doomed world Road told Cross, as some sort of witnesses of the Noah's struggles on behalf of God?
► Tyki’s nature is hinted at by Road even as early as ch. 93, and the confrontation with Neah in the volume 26 makes me really think he’s some sort of copy of him
► This panel is Pain:
► I love Lenalee and Lavi’s relationship so much!! Lavi’s arc was gripping, and took Lenalee’s words on the boat (‘am I still in this world?’) to a whole new context
► About Luberrier :
How in hell was he aware of the 14th without even Cross telling him? His dialogue with Zuu before saving Link strongly suggests he knew the 3rd gen. project would cause the Noah attack on the laboratory and the 14th awakening, isolating Allen, as though he made a deal with a Noah or sb else. The ch150 (Hevlaska and Luberrier’s past) is haunting me, I’m really curious to see where this is going!
► About Link : We know so little about his past, how he became a Crow, how his devotion was built by the Administration (Link’s flashback with Luberrier after recovering was scary, how easily he gave in & Luberrier’s whole behavior was ugh)! Komui’s corner mentions the two red dots on the Crow’s forehead are scars left by the operation that made them sorcerers against their will + Allen tried to touch it, which made him mad GAHHHHHH I NEED MORE CONTEXT
Ch247 hurts even more considering Neah used the same words as Allen to greet Link but rang false aaaaaaa
Link’s profile is cut from the Central Administration’s organization chart from volume 25 (when he admits feeling conflicted over Allen’s fate), before his profile was included in the same box:
Komui’s corner once mentioned comforting food thanks to the emotional value they hold eg. Allen and Cross’s porridge. Link says he had something similar so I wonder if this will ever be showed in the manga!
► About past!Allen: This might be a reach, but ch221’s flashback made me think Atuuda’s magic (its symbol in particular) can be linked to past!Allen with the whole spiral of life theory (+ the fact his body rejuvenated by some miracle):
There are also many parallels with other dynamics in the manga: -> Neah-Cross & Mana — he was set on eliminating anything else that draws near Mana, as a promise he made to Neah -> Luberrier-Link & Neah-Allen — Luberrier needs Link in order to protect and save them from anyone -> past!Allen & Neah — he promised Neah he would protect his memory from anyone (-> Kanda & Alma — he was the only one that could save Alma)
(I don’t want to think about Link potentially becoming another host for Neah, sacrificing himself for Allen for example aaaaaa)
I saw Hoshino’s sister loves Link’s character and what happens next to him will potentially be pure pain, I get her because his potential is skyrocketing and I’m definitely not ready aaaaaaaa
► What was even going on between Neah and past!Allen???????????????
► Allen’s past was really devastating. Mana’s words by the sunset ;;;;;
► In ch216, Cornelia’s wood destroys Timcampy in a similar way Red is bound eyes and ears from the scene when the Earl comes back in the circus in the recent chapters (with those little black hands)
► The parallels & oppositions btw Kanda & Link (the potential of the trio Kanda-Allen-Link!!!!!) : -> both presented in a negative light at the beginning -> both now deem themselves unworthy to be a part of Allen’s life: Kanda is glad Johnny is there to support him, Link says he will disappear from Allen’s life if he defeats the 14th (and also That Panel when he saw Allen come back to his senses and save Johnny). Both have feelings they suppress when it comes to Allen, in a stark contrast with Johnny’s honesty -> both were objects of experimentation/intensive training but Kanda feels no loyalty to the Order, while Link does strongly to Luberrier -> both wound up with a shortened lifespan they hide atm (Kanda as a Fallen One & Link with Atuuda) -> both were targeted by Apocryphos and had their memories rewritten -> Kanda wants to kill the 14th, Link is ordered to aid him -> hands shown as holding dominion over them both (the Innocence, Luberrier and the Heart)
► Predictions for the next chapters: Since Johnny is going along with Allen & Link, there’s a chance : 1) Link will drive Johnny away so Neah wakes up ; 2) Neah will do it since he sees everything through Allen’s eyes and even challenges Link’s ‘loyalty’ 1) would be logical as everyone in Allen’s group feared it while Allen accepted the risk but given the whole arc, Link seems VERY conflicted over the whole matter (and their shoujo-esque reunion damn, that and volume 25 whole vibes) Also Road seems to have led Allen to the mansion through his dream because she thought he was dangerous (????) AND a ‘bookman’ was there, so a lot will happen!
Have a nice week-end!

Top 5 Link moments 👀
OH STELLA WHERE DO I BEGIN. I genuinely thought this would be easy but I had to go through and double check so many chapters, I ended up with double the amount of scenes and had to narrow it back down to just 5.
I haven't read the latest chapter yet but I know he's back again, so this might just have more tacked on later LMAO.
5. Link Fighting the Akuma in Hearst Orphanage

This was maybe the first time we got to see what Link could do, and where I really started to go "Now, who is this guy?" He only gets a couple licks in, but what he did for a 'civilian' was so impressive. I went with this page because the kick is just so incredible, and I love him talking about being a CROW-- "I have black wings." Love love love this whole scene.
(Also just before this, he carries Emilia and Timothy over his shoulder and jumps down a whole flight of stairs. That I didn't really remember until looking for these panels, but GOD does that really do it for me. Mr. Link please carry me over your shoulder like a bag of four.) 4. His 'Last Words'

I don't have a lot to say about this one. I love how Link can be a little sassy on occasion, and I just love his bitchy smirk as he delivers his 'last words.' His death CRUSHED me, but I can't lie he really served here.
3. His Backstory and the Thirds

I love love love not only Link, but the Third Exorcists as well. I wish we got to know more about them all. This also felt like such a sweet, rare little moment of Link opening up to Allen for once. Allen has talked to Link about Mana a bit at this point, but Link is still such a mystery. But it's also bittersweet! Kiredori and Goushi are dead, and they haven't a clue as to Tewaku, Tokusa, and Madaro's fates... In the pages before this Link has extra lines under his eyes, has he been sleeping? Has he been crying? I just love him so much. I hope someone asks about the Thirds in a discussion room one day so we might learn more about them and Link.
2. Link's Inner Conflict

First of all, this page is GORGEOUS. His expression, the tattoo in full view. But I love this scene because we start to see some more character development in Link. He's always been one to follow orders, and we see him wrestling with these decisions and the consequences they might have. He wants to save Allen, but Lvellie is pulling him to Nea. Who will he choose? I just love a character whose faith gets challenged. What are you going to do Link?
1. Link's Return from the Dead

Alternatively titled "Link's First Smile." I lost my MIND when he was revealed to be alive. And then he shows up in thigh highs and a slutty little turtleneck? The audacity. But what I love about this is that he's smiling. Even if it's just a ruse for Kanda, this is one of if not the first time we see Link smile? In one of the discussion rooms I believe Allen comments on how he always tried to get Link to laugh or smile, but he never could. As much as I love this scene, truly a Cunt vs Cunt moment, it also stresses me out so much. Link what do you have planned? Where will this lead him? Will you ever be free of Lvellie? Do you even want to be free of Lvellie?
He tortures me. I love him so much and he tortures me!!
Bonus: I'll leave you with Link's sexy little Artificial Exorcist Arc outfit

Also thank you so much to the website d-gray-man-manga for all the pages! I went through their translations/scans to jog my memory and grab these panels.
#Maybe one day I'll finally post about Beatrice my OC I ship with him#and their tragic affair#But for now: just Link#howard link#howard link my beloved#dgm

still not over the most recent dgm chapter. just...link came into allen's life at a real lowpoint, and was literally assigned to spy on him and investigate him and monitor him at all times. but just by being there, as link, he gradually became this massive comfort to allen. a constant companion, a steady presence, a grounding figure. he's never been on allen's side, but he's been at allen's side. he helps allen solely by being there.
this arc has done such a fantastic job of focusing on allen's relationships with kanda, johnny, and link. each one of those friendships is incredibly different, but they all give allen the strength to keep going in different ways. it all felt so hopeless right up until he sat down with all three of them, and then suddenly, the problems that seemed so inevitable and so insurmountable that all he could do was run actually seem pretty manageable. he can face the fourteenth, his past with mana, the mystery of the campbells with their support. and maybe, knowing they're with him, he can finally say goodbye to the mask of "allen walker"...

ARE you caught up on D.Gray-Man?
If so, or from wherever you are in it, how do you think it will end? For the main cast and the Noahs.
Yep! I recently reread the manga (my yearly tradition for 7 years straight 😤) and caught up with all the chapters
I have no clue how the ending will look like cuz Hoshino introduced a lot of new plot points recently: The Millennium Earl being the pillar, Noah clan "pretending to play family with the Earl" (which holy shit that threw me in for a loop), time travel/time loop theory looking more and more likely and god knows what's going on with Apocryphos and the Heart (I do have a crack theory that innocence is alien technology that landed on earth way back when but that's a whole different discussion), and I have no clue how it's all gonna tie together.
But in general, I think the ending will be bittersweet, very bittersweet ;w;
As for the main cast…
There's not a doubt in my mind that Lenalee will be fine. She'll live in peace with her brother in the end. There's an 70% chance she'll be the narrator/POV character for the final chapter. I've seen theories that her arc will be abt confronting Levllie which I would like to see
Kanda, I'm sorry to say, is def gonna kick the bucket 😔 But he'll get his closure with Allen and it's gonna be emotional and I'll cry like a baby ;w;
Lavi is alive (and might have already become Bookman?), but given past comments from Hoshino and her editor it sounds like Lavi isn't gonna have a happy ending :(
iirc Hoshino's editor claimed that when he found out abt what Hoshino had planned for Lavi he shivered, so sadly no sunshine and rainbows await my og blorbo ;w;
There's also the theories of Lavi being the Heart or becoming the Noah of Wrath that I really like but idk how likely they are. I used to be pretty confident in the Lavi-Heart theory but now I'm starting to think that the Millennium Earl might be the Heart? or at least part of it? (my reasoning being that if the Earl = Pillar, and the Pillar looks very similar to a Fallen One, so we can assume that the Pillar is linked to innocence. Therefore! The Earl is linked to innocence and might be the Heart!)
(And I think it’s pretty likely that Chaozi will be the one to become the Noah of Wrath.)
So Lavi will be alive at the end of the series but as a Bookman it's likely he'll reject companionship and end up alone. I really want Lavi to redefine what it means to be a Bookman and find a healthier middle ground but Hoshino's comments don't give me much hope ;w;
Allen... oh Allen... I have 0 clue what Hoshino has planned for Allen (and Neah). I get the feeling that Allen isn't gonna survive at the end but at the same time the current arc has been focusing a lot on his suffering so killing him off would be like kicking a puppy (*insert morbid allen the dog joke here*)
Neah is an even bigger mystery and I also have no idea what to expect from him. I look forward to him and Allen having a real conversation and I think it's possible we'll see them "fuse" into one person?? Maybe Neah and Mana will sacrifice themselves to save the world and/Allen? maybe??? Who knows! ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
Neah is a wild card and I really want to find out what his plan is, it must be pretty important if someone like Cross is willing to spend decades trying to carry it out. I personally think his plan is linked to the time-loop theory: if there's a time-loop he's probably the only one who can break it or something along those lines.
Link will be fine, I think? Maybe?? Link is my second fav so I'm eager to see where his arc will go. Atuuda has opened up an interesting realm of opportunities for his character.
Johnny’s another wild card, I have no idea what Hoshino has planned for him (other than to be Allen’s anchor).
On the Noah side, Tyki will definitely be fine. He'll probably fuck off with his human miner friends at the end. I think we’ll see him team-up with Allen and co towards the end (and it’ll probably have to do with why Tyki looks identical to Neah).
I want to say Wisely will be fine too? But that's prob my own bias speaking lol. I like him so I want him to be fine 🥺
Similar to Tyki, I think Road will team-up with Allen and co but idk if she’ll be alive by the end. She’s one of the oldest characters and she’s from the past generation of Noah. I could see her making a dramatic sacrifice to save Allen or Tyki. Then again, we already saw her sacrificing herself for Allen against Apocryphos so idk if Hoshino will want to rehash that 🤔
Mana/the Earl’s situation is so fucked up, and with the curve balls Hoshino has thrown our way, I have no idea how it’s gonna end. I think it’s possible that Mana will sacrifice himself, either with Neah or Allen, to save the world. But honestly anything is possible 😅
In general, I think the Noah clan's motivations will be revealed to be sympathetic, probably more sympathetic than whatever the Heart/Innocence is trying to accomplish. Personally, I think the Noahs are trying to save/purify humanity (there has to be a reason why the akumas become more human-like with each level) and prevent the Pillar from, you know… exterminating all life on Earth.
#asks#dgm#once again i've written a ramble that is over 900 words long#i didn't mention the other noahs cuz i dont care abt them and i expect most of them to just be obstacles#long post

Hmmmm how to say. There’s a certain peerhood of character dynamic that comes from two people in a work being both girls/both boys/both neither. That isn’t to say that life isn’t fluid or that you can’t build a dynamic between male and female characters that ignores this divide.
To take an example at random—MP100. Emi, Asagiri, Tsubomi all interact with Mob as Girls. They’re foreign, agitating or destabilizing elements in Mob’s world (the audience’s world) as non-peers. His interactions with them are always in the context of Gee I’m Talking to a Girl. Mezato is an edge case but still Girl. Mob ends up misinterpreting her journalistic curiosity as interest in the Divine Tree arc, which only makes sense if she’s viewed as Girl before Classmate. Tome, on the other hand, is fully a Peer character. She’s Mob’s closest friend from what we see in-canon, they go on what he describes as ‘dates’, but she’s so far out of the Girl social role that Shigeo never associates her with the fresh intrigue of the Girls. Instead she’s a comforting, reassuring force on the story in the way that Reigen and Ritsu are. She even steps into Mob’s shoes for the oneshot! There are gendered roles and non-gendered roles and actual gender doesn’t have to define them. Tome is a girl and not a Girl.
So, it’s interesting to play around with his characters’ genders can shape even non-romantic dynamics, or how dynamic is itself gender. People who are similar feel kinship. A tomboy will hang out with boys on the playground or a kid bullied for being a sissy will be part of the girl group. That gets complicated when genders bend around in-story.
Specifically DGM Alma Karma was born from the transmigration of a woman’s soul into an an artificial male-assigned homunculus. Her/his/their key dynamic is with Kanda as two-of-a-kind. Both experiments, both exorcists, both (assigned) boys growing up together. The sense of sameness and equivalency is important to that relationship. They have no one else in the world like them except each other.
PastKanda’s dynamic with PastAlma also fits into a strictly gendered structure: Kanda is a brooding gruff man searching for a lost cheerful kind woman. They’re the action hero/deadwife cliché. Kanda has abstracted PastAlma away from any semblance of personality because he doesn’t even know her, he just has a vague impression. The woman is separate, unknowable, distant, and though Hoshino is a lady herself, the trope is a misogynistic one that relies on the idea that women are mysterious creatures rather than human beings with thoughts and dreams.
By then transposing the somewhat gendered relationship of childhood friends-twins-equals-peers on to the irrevocably gendered trope of sadman/deadwife, Hoshino then challenges the way that gender informs the whole story. Kanda’s view on Alma is wholly interior. Alma is himself reflected, openly expresses what Kanda feels and hides, is the one person who truly knows and understands him. Then his view on PastAlma is entirely exterior; she is an inscrutable ghost, an invisible gap in his life. Kanda has idealized PastAlma and resented Alma for a decade only to find out that they’re the same person. Which begs the questions: did he think of them differently just because he thought Alma was a boy? Was PastKanda even a man? Do we the audience read PastAlma as opaque just because she’s a woman, where Alma is such a lively screen presence? Would Alma present as a woman if she weren’t trying to go incognito, or did they genuinely identify with the boyhood he was assigned?
Who knows. Social pressures always weigh on the edges of a story. Even if they’re not obvious, they inform how events unfold and how audiences interpret them. Gender (patriarchy) is such a pervasive hierarchy that a writer/reader’s got to consider how it influences plot events. Alternately, ignoring it has got to be a deliberate choice and you’ve got to think hard to keep gender from sneaking into the reading (eg a perfectly neutral interaction between girl characters will read as misogynist between a girl and a guy).
#kelsey rambles#brought to you by a post I should reblog talking about how Alma Karma is both feminine and masculine#but only in the ways that clash. their rough rage and destruction is their womanhood while their sociability and their grace is masculine#character study aside Alma plays the role of both a girl and a boy in the series. Kanda’s view of them (the lens through which we watch)#is defined by thinking of Alma as A Boy Like Me and by thinking of PastAlma as Divine Feminine#complicating it further. purely from a trope standpoint you can’t unpick one from the other#also. regret to say that I think it’s an important aspect of Kanda’s character that he only finds out about Alma at the very last second#he goes through that entire arc believing Alma to be a) a guy b) a stranger#or going to MP100 I see a lot of girl Mob which is great adorable interesting canonically resonant#but I also see a lot of girl Mob and boy Teru which feels so at odds with their entire thing of Teru being Mob’s foil/reflection/equal/peer#girl Mob must compare herself to alpha bitch fashionista girl Teru. just as guy Mob has to compare himself to suave bully boy Teru#their entire dynamic is rooted in comparison so you can’t just have them be different#or if you do have girl mob and boy teru then you’ve got to create a reason for them to view each other as competitors#given that both have extremely gendered worldviews and attitudes (mob’s idolization/teru’s precocious dating)

I don't know if you're still looking for series recommendations but could I suggest my personal favourite series?
It's called D.Gray-Man and it's honestly one of the best written series I've ever come across. It's about a fourteen year old boy called Allen Walker who joined an organisation called the Black Order that use a power called Innocence (It's different for everyone; Allen's arm transforms, Kanda has a sword, Krory is basically a vampire, Miranda can control time, all of them are great) to fight against beings called Akuma created by the Millennium Earl.
It goes into a lot of deep topics but the main one is grief because Akumas are created by the Millennium Earl preying on people who have recently lost a loved one into making a deal that will bring back their loved one's soul but unfortunately that soul becomes the Earl's servant and they kill and steal the body of the one who brought them back. But it explores the points of view of both the people who lost and the people who were brought back. For example, Allen is valuable to the Order because he has a cursed eye that can see Akumas through their disguises, but he got that eye because his father figure that he brought back as a child was enraged that he would fall for the Earl's bargain and cursed him.
There's also so much well written development for all of the characters and it's honestly a bit of a mystery series but everything is set up so subtly you barely notice until about halfway through. It's a series that definitely gets better with repeated viewings.
Also, the artstyle is gorgeous. In the beginning, it's good but the artist's style now is downright ethereal, seriously I stare at her pieces for hours. Plus, the overall aesthetic of the series is inspired by gothic and Halloween tropes in everything from the architecture to the antagonists' designs to the overall feel of background elements.
Plus, Allen is such a unique protagonist. I know we've had dozens of 'Optimistic Teenage Boy With A Tragic Past' protagonists in shounen series but Allen's optimism is different. His optimism is more of a coping mechanism, it's pretty much the only way he can get through everything he goes through. Considering his backstory as an orphan working in a circus, the best description I've seen for him is "a lonely clown with a painted smile" which sounds cheesy, I know, but it fits.
I should point out the series isn't finished. There was a lot of drama for a while when the writer had to take a break due to injuring her wrist and then higher ups tried to alter the story so there was a whole ordeal of her getting the full rights and recovering and an anime company completely ignoring her requests in regards to marketing but she's back to updating and it's usually every few months a new chapter comes out.
I would recommend reading the manga if you want to check the series out since obviously it has more of the story and again, Hoshino's artstyle is to die for. But the anime is fantastic too, with about 200 episodes and all of the few filler episodes being adaptations of the light novels written by the author's good friend, plus the continuation series D.Gray-Man Hallow that came out years later (after the whole rights debacle). Plus a certain arc has a song as an important plot point and that scene in the anime makes me sob every time.
I'm not really sure about warnings, there is some vague body horror but they never really go too into it and a few characters have backstories of human experimentation but that's about all I can think of.
I'm really sorry for such a long freaking essay of a recommendation but I adore this series and would love to get someone else to watch it (all my friends refuse). I really hope this didn't annoy you but considering your love of the themes and characters of Madoka Magica, I thought it might appeal to you so I took a chance. Again, sorry for the behemoth of an ask. If nothing else, please look up Katsura Hoshino's artwork. It's gorgeous.
Its been a long long time since I had a recommendation on here but all of this sounds very interessting.
I do however also have the attention span of a toaster, like I barely managed shows with a bit more than 20 epsiodes (like Kill La Kill, The Ancient Magus Bride, Evangelion, etc.) and I have a bunch of stuff I started and haven't finished yet (Jujutsu Kaisen, Violet Evergarden, and more) so the anime will probably not be it...
The manga however.... I have a suprising talent at binging mangas, like I read all of Chainsaw Man (and another one that I won't name) in two days, I binged over 130 chapters of JJK in two days as well so. I can see myself reading it yeah.
So I am adding it to my list, even if it might take a long time because I have like 120+ different series on my list but I'll get it to it eventually, and thank you for the recommemdation!

D.Gray-Man Tag!
Got tagged by Violet (@14thexorcist) to answer to a few questions.
Just answer the questions and tag three other blogs when you’re done.
• What year did you first get into DGM?
I first started to read DGM when I was in middle school (I was 12), so in 2007. A friend was really into it back then and told me about it, so naturally I got curious and looked it up. I don’t remember if I started reading it or watching the anime first. But in the end I did both that year.
• Who’s your favorite character?
Kanda. It was Kanda back then (handsome and mysterious dude, of course I was going to fall for him lol) and it’s still Kanda now even after all these years.
• Who’s your least favorite character?
Eeeehhhh hard to say. Maybe Chaozii Han or Renny Epstain. I just can’t seem to find a any good side to them.
• Who’s your favorite general?
Weirdly enough it’s Sokaro/Socalo/whatever is his name. I wish we’d see more of him. Tiedoll is a close second. (I’d say Kanda but he hasn’t been a General for long so it’s hard to say if he’s great or not)
• Who’s a character you would get along with?
I have no idea.
• What kind of innocence would you have?
Bold of you to assume that the Innocence would want me lmao. But if by some miracle I was worthy enough, it would probably be a bow..? Something that wouldn’t force me to get too close to the Akuma/Noah.
• Whats’a your ship?
(Violet dear you kind of messed up when writing this question so I’ll assume you wrote “What’s your favorite ship?” or something along the line)
I love both Yullen and Yulma equally. (Maybe a bit more Yullen but shhh)
• What’s your least favorite ship?
I don’t have any to be honest. Years ago for some unknown reason I really didn’t like Laven. But now I do like it so... ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ I suppose as long as it’s not inc*st or p*dophilia I’ll be fine with it.
• What branch would you want to be part of?
Aside from the European Branch and the Asian Branch, we know so little of the others that it’s hard to tell. (The only thing we know of the North American Branch is that it’s where Alma was being kept “alive”. And the others?? No idea.) Maybe I’d like to be part of the Asian Branch. Maybe. Actually I don’t know.
• What’s your favorite arc?
I’m really hyped by the current arc to be honest. (FINISH THAT FLASHBACK ANDGET TO THAT MANSION FFS) I also really like the Alma Karma arc and the whole arc in Paris with Timothy (it was my favorite art-style by Hoshino)
I tag @nooooooooooooo00000000, @metzzi, @kandaxxx and @bravo-cube (I know that’s 4 and not 3)

DGM asks: 1, 2, 6, 11, 14, 15, 16, 17, 18, 19, 30, 32, 39
Thank you so much for the asks! I am adding this note after answering all of them and a lot of them made me really think! :)
// How did you discover DGM? //
I honest to God can’t remember! I know it was around when I first started college because I remember being in an extracurricular club and whenever we talked anime, the one guy would go, “Oh God, time to hear all about D-Whatever.” whenever I started talking (this was a guy who wore an AoT jacket every fucking day so don’t worry, I let him have it.)
// What is your favorite moment of the manga/anime? //
Manga: when Kanda sits down with Allen and asks to hear his backstory. It’s been obvious since the beginning of the Alma Karma arc that Kanda’s going through his redemption arc but this scene, in my opinion, makes it the most obvious how much he’s growing.
Anime: When the Level 4 attacks the Order and Kanda uses a random sword to defend himself/the other staff members and then bitches at Komui that their weapons suck lmao
// What are your thoughts about DGM Hallow? //
Okay, so I know that it wasn’t popular and it was heavily criticized but honestly, I loved it. The animation wasn’t great, and while the art style reflected the development in Hoshino’s art in the manga, I found myself missing the art style from the original anime series. Maybe I’m biased because Kanda is my #1 husbando and most of this season revolved around him and his backstory, but I genuinely liked it. I thought it did a fairly good job of following the manga’s story.
// OTPs? //
So this series is very weird for me because I have a lot of ships but here’s a few of my OTPs:
Kanda x Alma
Kanda x Lenalee
Lavi x Lenalee
Kanda x Lavi
Lavi x Allen
Lenalee x Allen
I’m sorry I basically ship the entire main 4 with each other lmaooooo
// Who is your favorite character from the Noah family? //
It was Tyki until I learned that Wisely has a pet frog named Froggy. He is B A B Y !!!!!!!!!!!
// Who is your favorite character from the Exorcists? //
I’m sure this will be a surprise to everyone (this is sarcasm lmao I know how obvious my simping is) but it’s Yu Kanda. I have him tattooed on my arm and am working with my artist currently to get a Kanda-themed tattoo on my hand, in case anybody wanted to know how intense my love for him is lmaoooo.
// If you had Innocence, which type would you like to have? //
I’d want an equipment type. I’m a baby so I don’t think I could handle the strain of a parasitic type. As far as the weapon itself, I’d want a shotgun or a rifle. I know it’s not super original but I think it’d be badass as fuck.
// If you were a Noah, what kind of Noah would you like to be? //
I’d like to be the Noah of Pleasure. No actual reason lol.
// Favorite headcanon? //
Oh fuck I have so many lmao. I know this implies one answer, but I’ll give two:
NSFW: Kanda is definitely a virgin who has no understanding of sex and is confused by most of the ins and outs of it but once he starts having sex he very quickly becomes a fiend and is kinky as fuck.
SFW: I think that Lavi is the heart. I have no actual evidence to back this up, but I think it’s him.
// Which character can you relate the most to? //
Lenalee. I care about those in my life fiercely and have a bad habit of putting their wants/needs before my own which I feel like Lenalee does as well.
// If you could kill off a character in DGM, who would it be? //
Chaozii. He’s just annoying as fuck. I was going to say Lvellie for obvious reasons, but something about the recent chapters make me think that he wants to help Allen and actually does see this mystery third side of the war???
// If you could write an ending for DGM, what ending would you write? //
It’s really cheesy, but I’d write a really happy ending. I feel like everybody in the Order deserves it. Like the war ends and they win and the Order dissolves and everybody just gets to lead normal lives.
// If a character would sing you a lullaby, which character should it be? //
I would want it to be Kanda but we all know that would never happen so Lavi?? I could see him singing a lullaby to somebody if they needed help sleeping lol.

I was going through an old sketchbook and rediscovered some stuff from back when I was a Voltron fan (before it got shitty), so anyway it’s time to talk about my old
DGM Voltron AU
Howard piloted the Black Lion (calm and collected, I think he would be a good leader), Rohfa piloted the Green Lion (smart, curious, braver than she looks, and also I love her and she deserves importance), Kanda piloted the Red Lion (naturally gifted fighter, his current/upcoming arc as the edgy loner that has to step into leadership mirrors the good/early part of Keith’s), Lavi piloted the Blue Lion (energetic, fun loving, and outwardly immature with a lot of hidden skill and internal conflict), and Allen piloted the Yellow Lion (kind and selfless, naturally brings people together). Lenalee and Komui were Allura and Coran (I don’t feel like this one needs a lot of explaining).
I was always really torn about who (Allen or Link) should take Shiro’s place as the one with History with the Galra, as well as which one should get kidnapped and cloned. On one hand the Neah/14th stuff would make a great transfer to the clone storyline, and the weird hand stuff is already all set up. But! Link getting nabbed would make way for better arcs for the rest of the gang (and ones more similar to VLD canon). Kanda could step up as leader (like him becoming a general right now in canon), and Lenalee could take his place as Red Lion paladin (a gifted and instinct driven fighter who’s both humble and brave as hell). I think I was considering having Allen be the one with History and the initial kidnappee, but then the gang swoops in to save him right away and Link gets stuck (and maybe cloned) in his place.
For the villains, Tyki totally takes the place of Lotor (dualism motif vs being mixed galra/altean, possibly mysterious past, personalities jive), and the Earl is Obvs Zarkon. Road tentatively takes the place of Haggar, more for her place in the story (the loyal, magical, and mysterious second in command) than any personality reason. In this version Tyki wouldn’t be the direct son of the main villains. He’d have to have been created magically somehow, since Road as we know her definitely ain’t having any kids. I also considered Katerina for Haggar’s part, but we just know so little about her.
And this is less developed, but Crow/the thirds would be the blade of Marmora, and the Science department/rest of the exorcists other team voltron supporters.

The Pillar of the Earl pt. 2
I’m going to keep this title, sorry not sorry.
In case you’ve missed the previous entry, this is a collection of every fishy moment / thing no one understood yet about the Earl (Mana, Neah and everything in between). I’m doing my best to collect everything but in case I forgot something, just tell me. It would be useful to have all the information together.
(Part one here)

Nice symbolism
———
Volumes 9-10
After Allen wakes up CC for the first time, the LVL3 gives him the ark to go to Edo, because “the Noah said so”. Fishy. The Earl will be later pissed off that Allen was there.

It is said that the Noah were born inside the ark, and that head-looking machinery that the Earl uses to create akumas, is the birthplace of Noahs, and that is ONLY now used to make akumas. From, this, and from the fact that akumas evolution has just started (the first level two is the one that killed Kanda and Alma in their previous lives), we can assume that akumas are a relatively new thing. In the same scene, Devit states that it is hilarious that humans and akumas were born in the same place and the earl giggles.

As anticipated in part one, the only ones who are supposed to move the ark are currently the earl and road.

The 14th was “the other one”, who’s now dead. Except he left his power to a human, whose name we now know (it’s Allen lol). I mean, not just his power, but his whole self. He’s now living inside Allen. But at that point of the story we didn’t know yet. Friendly reminder Neah has no Noah memory, so he’s not supposed to reincarnate like the others.
It is interesting that Neah bothered to break the ark before dying.
Volumes 11-12-13-14.
The following volumes feature less relevant information, as they’re duels, for the most. There are some hints about the 14th, but they all pointed at Allen being the actual 14th, and that’s a story we know already.
It could be mentioned that, when Allen evokates the Sword for the first time, Road has a vision of the Earl, maybe a flashback? No one knows. It’s in volume 12 anyway, toward the end.
Another interesting thing is how Tyki VS Allen reached a different ending, compared to Skinn VS Kanda. Kanda killed the human AND the Noah. Allen has a weapon that doesn’t kill the human, but the Noah only. Except that the Noahs become stronger, when triggered by innocence. Fishy. Unless you kill the human, it seems that it is impossibile to kill them. A bit like parasite type. Again, fishy.
Edit: I should have not overlooked the flashback in which Skinn awake as a Noah.
First of all, he had a dream about the end of everything, before turning definitely into a Noah

Second, the Earl states that he’s one of the 13 apostoles God created. This is false, just a volume before we learnt that the Noahs were created by Noah himself inside the ark. Unless the Noah is God (their God?) then there’s something fishy here.
Anyway, let’s go on.
I’ll overlook the whole Piano thing. The score was written with the secret code Mana taught Allen. This is not a mystery anymore. The rest is a build up for the “revelation” that will take place in volume 17. I’ll save this space for the upcoming volumes.
The 14th melody lyrics, just in case:
“Then the boy went to sleep
And one or two embers, alive in the ashes
Flared up in the shape of your beloved face
Thousands of dreams spread over the land
Stars like silver eyes twinkling in the night...
You shining ones fell to Earth
Even though the eons turn many prayers to dust
I will keep praying
Fire slowly burns as the boy is drifting off to sleep
Red embers flame in the ashes of our memories
Breathing in, then out again
There I see the face of my precious boy appearing
And every dream that I had for him is falling
To the ground, to the ground
Within the darkness you’re the one who’s always shining
Born in the night with eyes gray and trembling, yet so bright
Even if every word of my endless praying fell to Earth, not to be heard
Forgotten and turning to dust
I will still pray endlessly for this young boy to one day find love unconditional
And that he may be kissed on his hand”

The Earl was sad when the ark disappeared. We can guess it was because of the love Mana had for Neah.
After the Ark arc.
This is when the story starts to become tricky.
One thing I noticed is that the way the Order refers to exorcists is “sacrificial apostoles”, kinda like the Noahs are the “sacrificial lambs”. I don’t know what it means but it is interesting anyway.
Other three interesting things surfaced in that scene:
- Lvellie knew Cross was linked to the 14th, but Cross didn’t know Lvellie knew about him. This is even stranger because we learnt that Lvellie is part of the third side.
- Lvellie knew about the 14th because an old man came to the order for protection, fearing the Earl might find him.
- Lvellie also knew that the 14th after his death left his will to “cretain humans” (plural), who were people who supported him. One of these people seems to be the old man at the order. The other confirmed ones are Cross and Bookman (yup, Sheryl said that)

Done with part two. Again, if I’m missing something, just tell me.

Chapter 19: Mystery of Love is up! Yeah that title is from a song from the LMSBYS playlist and is also a play on the fact that one of the names for the arc we're in is the Mystery of Kanda arc. I do enjoy a good pun

Mun! What’s your favorite plot point of D.GM?
Okay….okay….okay I’m gonna do it this time. I’m gonna answer this. Sorry it took for fucking ever but damn is this a loaded question because like…I just love so many plot points.I love seeing Kanda’s backstory in the whole Alma arc, like literally Hallow was beautiful. I think that’s mostly because we didn’t have FUCKING FILLER EVERYWHERE! Like okay, I’m usually chill with filler but holy God the original series had so much of it…although to be fair I wouldn’t have minded seeing more on Daisya, Krory, or Miranda. I know one thing for sure, I didn’t appreciate the Cross Marian filler episode where it showed him being a total, complete, asshole. That can go burn somewhere. But yeah back to favorite plot points…I think the Alma arc was all well and good, lots of shit that happened to all the characters and we got see Mr. Link express fucking emotion for once, that was great. My over all favorite plot point though had to be really anything to do with Cross from near the end of the original series onward (I know that’s broad and it’s not really me choosing a singular favorite, but fuck, this is difficult). Cross is such a mysterious person and I just love to see the softer side of him and the little bits and pieces that let’s the reader know he does care. I especially love the moment in Allen’s dreamscape where he maybe/maybe not hallucinated Cross and how we get to look through Cross’s eyes. We see him look at Allen as if he’s still a child (especially prevalent when Allen finds out about the 14th and Mana’s connection in the first episode of Hallow because we see a snippet of Cross seeing child Allen, shocked, and heartbroken over Mana’s death) and he makes this promise to him that he’d stay by his side until his inevitable death if he chose to let go and be swallowed by the 14th. Then Allen goes on about wanting to continue fighting, even if it is inevitable and we see Cross’s vision change. He sees Allen no longer as a child but a grown man ready to take on what life gives him.Not only was that part really beautifully done, but it just…it makes me feel so good to see what Cross is thinking. I mean, people usually call Cross trash or whatever (sometimes I do to but jokingly…but I also really want to stop that) which is super disheartening as someone who is an addiction studies major and psych major. We don’t know just how much shit Cross has been through. Granted, that doesn’t excuse his toxic behavior…but it does give us an understanding of how his mind works. People act and do crazy, sometimes stupid irrational things to protect themselves from pain. Cross is such a painful character and I pity him. I don’t think he’s this ‘dumbass, player who doesn’t give a fuck about taking advantage of people’. I think he once was, still is someone who is capable of a lot of empathy. However, that empathy can be whittled away into nothing the more people push you around and hurt you. Trauma can whittle away at empathy.I think his anti-social behavior is a reflection of him being burned out by everything. He’s someone who is pleasure-seeking constantly because he feels so awful inside. Someone who constantly feels like shit will always seek that high because that’s what makes them feel better and what makes life worth living. Yes, addicts are the ones who need to make the choice to stop. Yes, addicts are the one who choose to take that first hit. However, I can understand why Cross wouldn’t want to stop. Why stop when the world is going to hell in a hand basket, especially when you know why because you’re the one who is the closest to the truth? You have seen all the other DGM characters struggle with their own demons with the shit they’ve been through…what about Cross? The guy who is closest to the truth, the guy who hand a hand on both sides of the coin? I don’t blame him at all for drinking away his sorrows. So yeah, this is kinda turning into a massive Cross appreciation post but…ahhh…in conclusion any plot point dealing with Cross are my favorites. I love mystery characters. I love characters who either present themselves as ‘constantly happy’ or ‘constantly an asshole and moody’ because I know that there is more to them and that there should be more written about them. They look flat and meaningless on the surface, but they end up playing a bigger pivotal role to the over all story, more than we realize. Thanks for your ask.
