Another warm up sketch…this one got out of hand
Listen, I think Hel would feel bad for Baldr and totally not feel extra bad because it was her dad’s fault he died. So she’d do what she can to cheer him up.

#this kinda implies that either the Aesir misinterpret his drunk confession OR#OR THEY KILL HIS KIDS AND TIE HIM UP FOR SPILLING THEIR TEA WHICH IS WILD#this was tied into a broader interpretation based around the fact that Loki isn’t actually the massive liar he’s frequently portrayed as#and frequently gets into trouble for being a little too honest and following through on promises he makes in distress#and that he’s more of a rules lawyer working within the bounds of words while never technically lying#iirc the interpretation (it was in a YouTube video I can try to find the link if anyone cares) also theorized#he wouldn’t cry for Baldr because he refused to let Frigg and Odin break the law of nature that Everything Must Die Eventually#and Nothing Escapes Death No Matter How Loved#(which would include him too btw Thokk didn’t cry I think everyone would have noticed if Loki Laufeyson didn’t cry)#not sure how much I agree with this version of events but it’s definitely quite heartbreaking once you think about Ragnarok

Damn, that makes their treatment of Loki even worse... and we were already angry when he did all that.
Stuff where Loki is framed for Baldr's murder is very meta
#i didn't like the book so i wouldn't recommend; but there was this book i read where Balder was some eldritch happiness god that caused#everything around him to die bc they'd neglect their needs bc they were paying attention to him instead#and loki killed him to free everyone and reverse the attempt at defying nature (bc everything must die eventually)#i thought that was interesting...#myth!loki#myth!baldr#norse mythology#but i had not thought of it as loki “killing” baldr because he refused to cry rather than bc he led hodor's hand

Okay, I got a question that's Haunted me for years.
WHY did Loki want Baldr dead?
Trust me when I say, it has haunted and plagued my mind just as much Roruna! Let's get into it shall we? 😌
Loki's motivations are not explicitly stated in the primary sources, leading to various interpretations. Some scholars suggest that his actions reflect the inherent tension between order and chaos, a central theme in Norse mythology. Others view Loki as a necessary agent of change, whose deeds, while destructive, pave the way for renewal in the post-Ragnarök world. Which in itself is actually a good thing!
Some possible motivations for Loki's actions, that are all valid at the same time for me (many factors i suppose XD) could be for example:
A desire to disrupt the natural order since Baldr symbolized light, purity, and harmony. By causing his death, Loki introduced, effectively disrupting the balance of the cosmos. This act aligns with how everyone always painted Loki to be as horrible as he turned out to be in the end, his role as a trickster, the outcast.. you know the deal! If we go with this its more targeted towards them all rather than just Baldr. They wanted someone to blame, so he embraced it and became their worst enemy.
Jealousy over how Baldr was the most admired among the gods. Loki, as we have seen in The Lokasenna, was capable of being quite jealous of others, even when they're rightfully praised for doing something.. after all we have to keep in mind Loki was treated very badly. Rest in peace Fimafeng!
Or my personal favorite! Revenge for not only how he was treated, but for his race and family too. His actions against Baldr might have been motivated by a desire to hurt Odin for how his children were treated harshly by the gods due to prophecies about their roles in Ragnarök and appearance. After all he was Odin's most beloved son (despite having many more!)
Fenrir was bound, Jörmungandr was cast into the sea, and Hel was banished to the underworld. Loki himself was eventually bound and punished severely, his younger sons meeting a brutal fate here as well. This would definitely have fueled a desire for revenge against the gods, with Baldr's death serving as a means to inflict pain upon them. Even better, he'd give his daughter Hel the most beloved thing in all the 9 realms since they all survive Ragnarök.
I don't need to defend my case here, we know very well he loved his children from the evidence of his traditions related to children and of the home. 🥹

Then said Loki: ‘Do thou also after the manner of other men, and show Baldr honor as the other men do. I will direct thee where he stands; shoot at him with this wand.’ Hödr took Mistletoe and shot at Baldr, being guided by Loki: the shaft flew through Baldr, and he fell dead to the earth; and that was the greatest mischance that has ever befallen among gods and men.
-Gylfaginning
Found this in my drafts XD. If there's a bit of mythology you'd like to see meme'd, let me know~ 💖

BALDR
Baldr, is a prominent figure in Norse mythology. He is the son of Odin and Frigg and twin brother of Höd.
Baldr is often associated with beauty, love, happiness, and purity. Known for his radiant appearance and gentle nature, Baldr is beloved by all the gods. His death is one of the most significant events in Norse myth, as it is foretold to be a precursor to Ragnarok, the end of the world. Baldr's demise comes about through the trickery of the mischievous god Loki, who exploits Baldr's one vulnerability to cause his death by Höd. This tragic event deeply affects the gods and sets the stage for the cataclysmic events that follow. In Völuspá, it was prophesied that Baldr would return from Hel, realm of the dead, after Ragnarök.

Feh Book 9 thoughts:
A male freebie oc?? Wasn’t sure we’d ever see the day
And Rune is adorable, he is so son… I will protect this boy
The new ocs overall seem pretty interesting (and I just knew they gave Loki that mythic alt so she could appear in a story later, that’ll be interesting too)
And the theming of it… law???
Feh doing this to me while I’m back into Ace Attorney now is just perfect timing, I love it 😭😭
Red prosecutor blue defence attorney… hell yeah it’s all lining up (yes ik they are sisters I am not implying to ship them, just that it’s extra special that the colours match up here)
And it does feel like the beginning of the end kinda… endgame being set up here. Alfaðör at last, the Twilit Runes…
All in all I am very excited to see where this book goes :)
#I think my fave so far based on first impressions is Rune. Followed by Höðr#speaking of I wonder why Rune is the only one who can read the Twilit Runes and stuff??#I am so ready to protect son boy and enter the world of law hehe#Very curious what Loki is up to as well… especially considering what happens with Baldr and Höðr in the og myths#feh#fire emblem#fire emblem heroes#fe heroes#feh rune#feh book 9

All -Mother Frigg au Pt. 2
Now onto the guys Odin, Loki, Thor , and Baldr

Thor and Loki are the most like their myth counterparts in this au, at least personality wise. Expect Thor decides to take up different hobbies, while Loki on the other hand is a still trickster, but now with less trauma, and the tendency to take more of a backseat when it has to do with his usual mischief. Instead, she lets Sigyn be the one who runs the show when it comes to starting shit.
Meanwhile, Odin is the least like his myth counterpart he actually somewhat cares for all his kids and tends to just share his wisdom with those who will listen.
Baldr is pretty much the same as in the myths he just dies Nanna’s death. Which further upsets Frigg because Baldr was her “favorite” son. So technically, Sigyn still gets blamed for Baldr’s death despite not killing him herself.
#norse mythology au#roleswap au#Odin#Loki#Thor#Baldr#art#character design#All Mother Frigg au#It feels weird drawing Loki without her mouth stitches#Though they wouldn’t have them in this au because all the consequences Loki faces in the myths happen to Sigyn now#Since this is pretty much a swap au#Sorry Sigyn#I also made Thor a farmer so you guys get Farmer Thor in this au as well

"Thus Baldr had to remain in the underworld, not to emerge until after Ragnarök, when he and his brother Höðr would be reconciled and rule the new earth together.."
"Then, whatever happened to Nanna..?"
You used to captivate me by your resonating light. Now, I'm bound by the life you left behind.
Your face it haunts my once pleasant dreams. Your voice it chased away all the sanity in me.
These wounds won't seem to heal, this pain is just too real. There's just too much that time cannot erase.
