and heres the cool shit dump that i spoke of

aestia trititaka comes from three sources:

first, "aestia" is a play on Hestia, the goddess of the hearth from the Greek mythosphere

"trititaka" is a play on Tripitaka, the main scripture pilgrim from The Journey to the West (you might no it from introducing the world to Sun Wukong, the maddest of lads)

the whole name is based off of the scientific name for common wheat, "Triticum aestivum"

aschei the great seer also went through a lot of changes over her development:

initially she was an entity i referred to as "the masterless", a descriptor i would later use in The Masterless Wood, her dungeon

she was supposed to be an entity that had existed at the time of the creation of the world and had met Orsa and Finis

the name "aschei" is a combination of "ask", in reference to how people keep asking this lady shit, and "koschei", as in koschei the deathless, a character who i thought had a baller name with a similar structure to aschei's and i fully just stole

there was also a time where aschei was supposed to be the Baba Yaga of folktale fame, but i decided against that for the sake of keeping her powerlevel low enough that she couldn't just kill eldroy outright

including ‘ask’ as part of aschei’s name because people keep asking her stuff is actually hilarious I like that

howdy everyone!!

i am excited to announce my first official series! i know i’ve teased a series before and i didn’t follow through with it, but i’m very excited for this. it’s definitely different than anything i’ve done before so i hope that people are pumped for it and enjoy it. this isn’t just my own idea but it is inspired by a story that me and a close friend came up with a couple years ago. this does not follow the exact events, but it is definitely inspired by it (you know who you are bestie). i’m not sure how many parts this story will have, but i am hoping at least 4! i’m hoping that once i get in the swing of writing for an actual series it will inspire me to go back to the previous series i wanted to start. as you can probably see, i really enjoy writing AU stories that take a completely different turn than canon events, whether that is plot or character driven. with that being said, i hope you enjoy this new story and i would love to hear how you feel about it!! until next time🤠🏜🐴

The Maryland Doom Fest Day 2: A Day in Pictures

DWJ questions: Did you read The Game? Archer’s Goon? Do her books feel unfinished at times? First drafts rather than final?

To the first two questions: yes and yes!

To the second two questions: ...mostly no, but I think I see what you're getting at.

A few of her books—The Game included—did leave me going "wait, we're done already??" Because she covers a lot of ground. Some of her books have so many things going on and being revealed over the course of the story that I'm like "wait, slow down, can't we spend more time exploring this?"

But that doesn't strike me as feeling like a draft—I think it's just how she wanted to tell those stories. She resolves every thread she sets up, which isn't easy! :P In The Game, for instance, I would have loved more time in the mythosphere, and a modern book would probably have spent more time there and used considerably more pages to tell the same story. (Honestly, in today's fantasy market, I can easily see that plot getting bulked out into two or three books.) But the story didn't need more time or pages to be told. So the places where she glances over things feel more like a stylistic decision than a flaw to me.

That said, I do get some of that "unfinished" or at least "unresolved" feeling with more of her books, and I think that's because she often wasn't interested in wrap-up. Some of her books have epilogues or other closing scenes after all the action, but sometimes they just...keep going until the end of the plot, and then abruptly drop the curtain. And if you've had a very quick-moving climax, that can be disorienting. (As I said in a post yesterday, I like it when the characters have wrap parties. :P)

I'd put Howl's Moving Castle in this category—everyone is saved, Howl and Sophie are holding hands, everyone resolves the remaining plot threads around them in dialogue (which they are not paying attention to), and then Calcifer returns, tying up the reader's one remaining concern. And it ends right there. No more lines.

So...I think she's good at plotting, and the stories we get are the stories she wanted to tell. But I would say that some of her books' final scenes, as final scenes, don't conclude so much as just stop.
