❄️ Day 12 - The Gingerbread House ❄️

Summary: TK and Carlos enjoy a double date night with Mateo and Nancy building gingerbread houses.

TK knocks and Mateo opens Nancy’s door with a smile. “Hey, guys! Come on in!”

They were down to just two couples for this hang and Mateo had come up with the brilliant idea of a double date night building gingerbread houses. Carlos was only too happy when Nancy and Mateo offered to host, meaning he didn’t have to stress about frosting, sprinkles, and candy going everywhere Lizzie the dog would surely investigate. 

TK has dressed accordingly for this gingerbread date by wearing a t-shirt with a gingerbread man whose leg has been snapped off that says “oh, snap!” He thought it was hilarious, and Carlos loves indulging his husband’s whims.

They step over the threshold of Nancy’s cozy apartment and she comes around the corner with her loud, jubilant greeting, and a round of hugs despite the fact she saw TK when they got off shift this morning. 

“It smells good in here, Nance,” TK compliments and Nancy points at the kitchen. 

“Teo and I have been making cookies.”

“It felt appropriate,” Mateo nods. 

“Pizza should be here soon,” Nancy finishes. “Y’all want something to drink?”

A little while later, Carlos is situated at a barstool at Nancy’s kitchen island, sitting beside his husband, each with a can of cranberry sprite in their hands, slices of pizza off to the side, and a shared gingerbread house kit in front of them. Nancy and Mateo are at the other end of the island in a mirrored position. Nancy’s playing holiday hits through the speaker in her kitchen and TK is scrolling through Pinterest for gingerbread house designs. 

“How about a sort of classic look, babe?” TK asks, showing Carlos his phone with a gingerbread house with white icing swirls on the roof, decorated in gumdrops and peppermints. 

“That’s pretty, but neither of us are exactly artists,” Carlos points out.

“No, but, you have a steady hand,” TK points out. “You have pretty cursive and you’ve written in icing on some of my cakes. The rest is just having an eye for detail, which we both have.”

Carlos doesn’t stop himself from reaching over to squeeze TK’s hand. “Let’s give it a shot.”

An hour later, TK and Carlos and Nancy and Mateo have two assembled gingerbread houses between them. 

TK and Carlos had been a good team, decorating each piece before assembling the whole thing, working together to hold the walls up in place until the icing solidified enough to hold steady as the other attached another piece. They added finishing touches with more candy and sprinkles and TK is beaming. It isn’t quite Pinterest worthy, and they’re both covered in icing–TK pointed out Carlos got some in his hair–but TK’s grin makes it worth it. 

Mateo and Nancy’s gingerbread house is surprisingly elegant, with expert piping around the trim of the house and a pretty swooping pattern on the roof. 

“Did y’all practice before we came or something?” TK laughs, as he takes a picture of their houses side by side.

“I watched a ton of tutorials,” Mateo shrugs. 

“And I have a sister who’s a baker. She taught me how to pipe frosting like that,” Nancy adds in. “But we did decide on a design earlier.”

TK shakes his head with a laugh. “Well yours looks amazing.”

“Uh, so does yours! I love the candy cane arches!” Nancy exclaims. 

“This was a perfect date night idea,” Carlos smiles, draping an arm around TK. “And we made a beautiful house, babe.”

The grin TK turns on him is blinding, and so full of love. “Yes, we did.”

BEEN DYING TO TALK ABOUT THIS. deleted nancymateo scene is my white whale.

okay so basically there was a deleted arc where nancy was jealous of mateo’s reaction to marjan disappearing, which culminated in this deleted scene where she accuses him of having feelings for her. we know the scene ended happily because we also saw bts of them rehearsing (image under cut, i don’t think i can track down the clip it was from because i’m working rn) and they looked quite cozy!

this scene is my roman empire and i think about it every day.

rewatching 4x11 (again) and i’m sure i’ve said this ad nauseum but i feel like the reading that nancy must somehow have so much money that 24,000 dollars doesn’t make a difference to her, or alternatively, that giving that money to mateo was so ridiculous/ooc that it should just be chalked up to lazy writing and left there are both so unintuitive. giving mateo the money was obviously really stupid of nancy, but stupid choices characters make are often the most revealing of their motives.

when mateo tells her he regrets taking the money, and nancy asks if he’s mad at her, and we see that lingering shot of her tearful expression as he goes home without her— THAT’S what it was about! nancy did something as unconscionable and crazy as giving a man a massive chunk of her life savings because she wanted him to love her and she wanted him to ask her to stay, and it all blew up in her face. this to me is like. the meat of her whole character.

I actually thought it might be Nancy who was holding Mateo’s neck in that one picture! It inspired a fic and I’m hoping it’ll manifest Mateo living through season 5

but no i don’t think he’ll die because i’m still holding onto my pregnant nancy theory…

It looks like your pregnant Nancy theory might actually be right!!! In the newest interview at the end Rashad mentions “there may be new babies” and someone else pointed out it could also be a fix for Mateo’s residency status issue if it is Nancy. I cannot wait for these last three episodes

There used to be a blog dedicated to the ship Nanteo a few years ago like their blog name was Nanteo and they used to answer those head canon questions like “Who’s the big spoon and who’s the little spoon” and they were always amazing but they disappeared and their blog no longer shows up and I miss them tbh lol. Nobody has mentioned them since tho

not me being born in the wrong generation... but also asking whether nancy or mateo is the little spoon is like asking who hits the blunt and who receives the shotgun... it's about equality <3

character you relate to the most — tk, because i am so small and yet the world is so cruel to me. yet i persevere!!!!

favorite episode(s) — 2.09, 4.11, 3.05, 4.04, 3.08, and 5.07 all jump to mind!

hottest take — i love both the iris reveal and tarlos adopting jonah, and i think they're both great moments for carlos that really highlight his flaws and complexity as well as his growth. to that point: sometimes moments that seem inconsistent are the most human moments of all. we are strange and fickle creatures!

favorite og character — evan buckley owns my heart and soul. #JusticeForBuckTommy

favorite ship — must i even say it?? i'm literally an employee at the tarlos factory. i got my bachelor's in tarlos.

most underrated ship — listen i would say nancymateo because they are special To Me but i'm not delusional, i know they're underwritten and not everyone's cup of tea. however it is a crime that we aren't all clocking in with 30k gracejudd aus and horny essays about judd's massive hands. we have GOT to get weirder about gracejudd!!

one(?) thing you'd love to see — i know it's too late for any of these, but some things i would have liked to see are: more tk flashbacks (i am fascinated by his lore and there's just so much we still don't know), lorraine feature, nancy flashback episode where brianna baker plays kid!nancy but all the other kids are played by children, a waco inspired religious cult arc, and tk and carlos having a real good snuggle.

not this being a literal novel. oh well y'all know me i have shit to say!! you've only scratched the surface of my rich inner world.
