Blue Jug: Blue Jug (1975)
Every record collector knows that a record bearing the Capricorn label, which was famously founded by legendary manager and promoter Phil Walden (*), almost certainly contains one thing: Southern rock. (**)
But not all Southern rock bands are created equal: they come in all kinds of stylistic varieties and tiers of creative talent, so I was still taking a chance when I scooped up this 50-year-old self-titled LP from Nashville, Tennessee's Blue Jug.
Well, turns out the six humble hillbillies pictured on the sleeve -- Ed Raetzloff (vocals/guitar), Clint Delong (vocals/guitar), Bill Little (keys/vocals), Bill Burnett (bass), Paul Walkley (drums), and Buddy Spicher (fiddle) -- accurately reflect the connotations implied by the word "jug" in their name.
Meaning, that Blue Jug's songs rely heavily on the rootsy, folksy, country, ingredients of Southern rock, aligning them, not with the Skynyrds, Hatchets, or Blackfoots of the genre, The Marshall Tucker and Charlie Daniels bands, Stillwater, and Grinderswitch.
But you know who these guys REALLY remind me of? The Band.
Just listen to the leisurely pace, subdued instrumentation, minimal production, and especially the three-part harmonies dominating cuts like "Education," "A Miner's Song," and "Come On to Town Ned" will take you straight back to Woodstock and Big Pink.
Exceptions to this undeniably derivative formula include "Hard Luck Jimmy" and "Sugar Man," which substitute some crunchy power chords, "It's a Fact," which adds an Appalachian swing behind Spicher's fiddle, and "Take a Little Time," which puts its weight behind a singalong chorus, complete with handclaps.
And, maybe it's just me, but I'm really not a fan of Raetzloff's strained higher registers, which waver and quaver to the point of distraction when pushed front and center on "Poor Virginia," "When the Moon Rises," and other tracks here.
Or maybe it wasn't just me, because the album didn't sell and Capricorn dropped the band, which wasn't heard from again until three years later, when a second album emerged through Ariola called Blue Jug Band.
But I'm afraid you'll have to listen to that one yourself, cos I've had my fill from this Blue Jug.
* I actually met Mr. Walden (R.I.P.) in the mid '90s, when he briefly revived Capricorn and visited the Polygram office in Chicago, but I was far too green to know about his incredible achievements with the label and as manager for Otis Redding and The Allman Brothers Band.
** Noteworthy outliers include occult rockers White Witch and heavy psych cult favorites Captain Beyond.
More Southern Rock: The Allman Brothers Band’s Idlewild South, Beaverteeth’s Beaverteeth, Black Oak Arkansas’ High On the Hog, Blackfoot’s Strikes, Blackhorse’s Blackhorse, Bloontz’s Bloontz, Creed’s Creed, Doc Holliday’s Doc Holliday, Epitaph’s Outside the Law, Grinderswitch’s Pullin’ Together, Hydra’s Hydra, Lynyrd Skynyrd’s Second Helping, Molly Hatchet’s Flirtin’ with Disaster, Navasota’s Rootin’, Nitzinger’s Nitzinger, Point Blank’s Point Blank, Potliquor’s Levee Blues, Two Guns’ Balls Out, Winterhawk’s Electric Warriors, ZZ Top’s Rio Grande Mud.

Grizzly Pines, in Navasota, Texas, reiterated its policy on banning transgender men from the campground, in an online post on Monday (31 March), which was Trans Day of Visibility. “This campground was created as a haven specifically for men who historically lacked spaces where they could express themselves openly without outside judgment, even from within the broader LGBTQ+ community,” the since-deleted post read, according to The Advocate. “We’re not anti-trans, we’re just focused on preserving this unique sub-cultural dynamic.” The clothing-optional campground’s mission was to “provide a safe, affirming and liberating space exclusively for cisgender men”, and it was “vital for guests to feel completely at ease physically and emotionally,” which included comfort with the “types of bodies, interactions and dynamics present”. Following a backlash, reviews on the campsite’s Facebook page have been removed and a limit imposed on who can comment. [...] A spokesman for The Houston Bears, a not-for-profit organisation for the Texan gay bear community, said they had severed ties with Grizzly Pines calling the ban “incompatible with our values”. A sold-out event scheduled at the campground, scheduled for next month, had been cancelled. Being “forced to tell some of our members, ‘not you’,” was not something organisers were prepared to do. “We know it is very late in the process but we believe that it is never too late to do the right thing,” the spokesman said. The RGV Bears also cancelled a summer camp event in solidarity with “our RGV Teddy Bear trans members”. Gay Camping Friends founder John Anderson told The Advocate he was dismayed by the campground’s tone and timing. “Their statement was passive-aggressive,” he claimed. “It had a lot of read-between-the-lines messaging.“ They said The Houston Bears had a ‘newfound support’ for trans people, and that sounded like mockery to me. There’s irony in saying you’re preserving a male experience while excluding trans men, who are men.”

JOHN SAUNDERS CHASE JR. FAIA (1925-2012)
When Mr Chase went to college in the 1940s, only 10% of the population had undergraduate degrees, and very few of those were people of color.
Mr Chase enrolled in Hampton University and went on to become the first Black graduate from the University of Texas. In 1952, he was the first Black architect in Texas to get an architectural license.
Because no firms would hire him, to fulfill a required apprenticeship, Chase appealed to the State of Texas to take his licensing exam without the required apprenticeship. He took it and passed.
Soon after, he designed a sleek Modernist building at 1191 Navasota Street in East Austin for the offices of the Colored Teachers State Association of Texas. About 70 years later the building was acquired by the University of Texas at Austin.
Mr Chase took work where he could find it, which in the beginning meant Black clientele. He designed Riverside National Bank in Texas, and he designed several buildings for Texas Southern University. As his career continued to grow, Chase opened offices in Dallas, Houston, Austin, and Washington DC.
Throughout his life Chase was an advocate for the arts, encouraging other people of color to become architects, and in 1971 he became one of the 12 co-founders of the National Organization of Minority Architects (NOMA), architects who met at the 1971 Detroit AIA Conference.
Mr Chase was the first Black member of the Texas Society of Architects and the Houston AIA.  In 1980, President Jimmy Carter appointed him as the first Black member of the US Commission of Fine Arts.
1959 - The John and Drucie Chase House, 3512 Oakdale Street, Houston TX. He added a second story around 1968.

Restore Your Smile with Natural-Looking Composite Fillings at Navasota Dental in Navasota, TX
Introduction
Your smile is more than just a facial expression, it's a key part of your confidence and how you connect with others. But when cavities, chips, or minor cracks compromise your teeth, it can impact not only your appearance but also your dental health. Thankfully, modern dentistry offers a solution that blends seamlessly with your natural teeth: composite fillings.
Tumblr media
At Navasota Dental, we provide state-of-the-art restorative care that doesn’t just fix your teeth—it enhances them. If you're looking for an option that restores both function and aesthetics without the metallic shine of traditional fillings, composite is the clear choice.
Situated in the heart of Navasota, TX, our dental team is dedicated to delivering advanced, personalized treatments that bring back the health and brilliance of your smile.
What Are Composite Fillings?
Composite fillings, also known as tooth-colored or white fillings, are made from a durable resin material that mimics the shade and texture of natural enamel. These fillings are used to:
Repair cavities caused by tooth decay
Restore chipped or worn teeth
Replace old metal (amalgam) fillings
Close small gaps between teeth
Improve overall aesthetics
Unlike traditional silver fillings, composite fillings bond directly to your tooth structure, creating a stronger, more natural-looking result.
Why Choose Composite Over Metal Fillings?
In the past, amalgam (silver) fillings were the norm. While strong and long-lasting, they came with several drawbacks:
Noticeable Appearance: Silver fillings are easy to spot, especially in front teeth.
Mercury Content: Some patients are concerned about the mercury in amalgam.
Tooth Discoloration: Amalgam can cause your teeth to darken over time.
Cracking Risk: Metal expands and contracts with temperature changes, which can crack the tooth.
Composite fillings solve these problems by offering a biocompatible, esthetic, and minimally invasive solution for dental restorations.
The Benefits of Composite Fillings at Navasota Dental
At Navasota Dental, we ensure every restoration supports your oral health and enhances your smile. Here’s why our composite fillings are a patient favorite:
1. Seamless Appearance
We carefully match the color of the resin to your existing teeth. Once placed, it’s virtually impossible to distinguish the filling from your natural enamel.
2. Minimally Invasive Procedure
Because composite material bonds directly to the tooth, less natural tooth structure needs to be removed. This helps preserve your long-term oral health.
3. Mercury-Free and Safe
Composite is made of non-toxic materials and is a great alternative for patients who prefer mercury-free dental care.
4. Versatile Application
Beyond cavity repair, composite can be used for reshaping, cosmetic bonding, and minor orthodontic adjustments.
5. Durability You Can Count On
With proper care, composite fillings can last many years. They resist wear from chewing and won’t corrode over time.
Our Composite Filling Process
Here’s what you can expect when receiving composite fillings at Navasota Dental:
Step 1: Dental Examination
We begin with a comprehensive exam to determine the extent of decay or damage. Digital X-rays may be taken for precision.
Step 2: Gentle Numbing
We use advanced techniques and local anesthesia to ensure your comfort throughout the procedure.
Step 3: Tooth Preparation
Decay is removed gently, and the tooth is cleaned. Unlike metal fillings, there’s no need to remove excess healthy structure.
Step 4: Resin Application
The composite material is layered into the cavity or imperfection. Each layer is cured with a special light to harden it in place.
Step 5: Shaping and Polishing
Once filled, we shape the resin to match your bite and polish it until it shines like natural enamel.
Composite Fillings for More Than Just Cavities
Composite isn’t just for decay it’s also a highly effective material for minor cosmetic treatments:
Fixing Chipped Edges
Covering Small Cracks
Masking Stains That Don’t Respond to Whitening
Slight Tooth Reshaping for Better Alignment
This makes it a cost-effective alternative to veneers or crowns for small cosmetic fixes.
Are You a Good Candidate?
Most patients are excellent candidates for composite restorations. You may benefit from them if:
You have a new cavity or small area of decay
You need to replace worn-out or cracked fillings
You want a more natural look than silver fillings
You have a chipped or broken tooth
You’re seeking mercury-free options
However, if you have very large areas of decay or severe bite forces (like teeth grinding), your dentist may recommend another type of restoration like an inlay, onlay, or crown for added strength.
Long-Term Care for Composite Fillings
Proper care will ensure your fillings last for many years:
Brush and floss daily to prevent new cavities
Use a non-abrasive toothpaste to maintain polish
Avoid biting hard objects like ice or pens
Wear a nightguard if you grind your teeth
Visit Navasota Dental regularly for cleanings and exams
Composite fillings are stain-resistant but not stain-proof, so limiting coffee, tea, and wine can help preserve their natural appearance.
Cost and Insurance Considerations
Composite fillings are often covered partially or fully by most dental insurance plans when used for cavity treatment. Cosmetic uses (like reshaping or closing gaps) may not be covered.
We provide:
Transparent pricing
Flexible payment plans
Insurance verification and claims handling
Affordable options without compromising quality
Conclusion
Whether you’re dealing with tooth decay or simply want to improve your smile’s aesthetics, composite fillings offer a natural, safe, and effective solution. At Navasota Dental, we’re proud to provide top-quality restorative treatments in a friendly, welcoming environment.
Take the first step toward restoring your smile with confidence. Contact our Navasota team today and discover the difference of truly personalized dental care.

If gay men booked the site for one weekend why couldn't transmen and gay allies book for an inclusive weekend some other time? Now a campsite that provided a space for gay men is now losing campers over the trans issue.
April 2, 2025
Houston Bears announced last weekend they were cancelling a planned event at Grizzly Pines in Navasota. A second group, RGV Bears, has since announced that it also cancelled an event planned at the campground
Houston Bears announced in a written statement released last weekend that the organization has cancelled its annual Bear Camp event, which had been set to take place in May at Grizzly Pines, a clothing-optional campground serving the gay community which has, as the website notes in all caps, a “MEN ONLY” policy.
In explaining the decision to cancel, the Houston Bears announcement says, “A community member recently inquired if they could attend Bear Camp at Grizzly Pines because the member thought that Grizzly Pines had a policy of not allowing transgender men to stay at their facilities.
The statement then reiterates that Houston Bears “welcome and celebrate all men, cisgender and transgender, at our events. … The idea of having an event where we would be forced to tell some of our members ‘not you’ is incompatible with our values.”
The statement notes that Houston Bears asked the Grizzly Pines management if they would suspend the “no trans” policy just for Bear Camp, but Grizzly Pines management declined. “We had hoped a successful event would demonstrate to them the value of being all men inclusive. Grizzly Pines, however, has opted to keep their policy in place,” the statement notes.
Houston Bears went on to say the organization “appreciates [Grizzly Pines’] understanding” regarding their decision to cancel the event and that the Houston organization “remain[s] open to working with [the campground] in the future if the policy is rescinded.”
Read the statement in its entirety on the Houston Bears Facebook page.
Houston Bears rescheduled the 2025 Bear Camp for May 16-18 at Rainbow Ranch Campground in Groesbeck. Visit the Houston Bears Facebook page or website for information.
The management for Grizzly Pines responded with a public statement on Monday, March 31 (which, by the way, was National Transgender Visibility Day), saying that Houston Bears knew “full well of our policy regarding trans-men well in advance of their organization booking their dates” for Bear Camp.
“This policy has been in place for more than ten years and it has never been hidden or kept from public, a fact that the Houston Bears have been fully aware of since the beginning,” the Grizzly Pines statement claims. “… We would also like to apologize for any misunderstanding or confusion their new stronger support for the trans community has caused anyone. This was never an issue with their board in the past when they scheduled their events with us and quite honestly came as a last minute surprise.”
The Grizzly Pines statement goes on to say the campground has always aimed to “provide a safe, affirming and liberating space exclusively for cis gender men — a place where community is built around shared lived experiences, comfort and connection. … We fully support and respect the broader LGBTQ community including our trans siblings and we believe there is room within the world for a wide variety of spaces that celebrate the richness and diversity of our identities. However, Grizzly Pines exits [sic] as a private niche retreat and its purpose is not to serve as a one size fits all solution for the entire LGBTQ+ spectrum.”
The statement continues by saying the “no trans men” policy is rooted in “preservation of a shared experience,” “comfort and vulnerability,” “focus, not exclusion” and the “right to define our community.”
Dallas Voice could not find where Grizzly Pines originally posted its statement online and it is reported that the campground has removed the statement. But the statement in its entirety is posted on the Facebook page of John Anderson, a former Dallasite now living in New Orleans and founder of Gay Camping Friends, which Anderson said is the largest LGBTQ+ outdoor community in the world, with more than 231,000 members.
Anderson this week condemned Grizzly Pines’ exclusion of trans men, saying in a Facebook post that he hopes “this latest backlash will help all campgrounds re-evaluate their policies on trans inclusion.”
He continued, “Gay Camping Friends is thinking about taking additional action in our group against all campgrounds that exclude trans people. We aren’t sure what that looks like, yet — but these are changing times, and if you can’t let trans men into a male only campground. you don’t share the values that Gay Camping Friends holds.
“I am calling on all male only campgrounds to accept trans men.” John Anderson, founder, Gay Camping Friends
RGV Bears, a Rio Grande Valley group, has expressed support for trans men and for the Houston Bears’ decision, announcing that RGV Bears is also canceling an event that had been scheduled at Grizzly Pines.
A post on the RGV Bears Facebook page notes: “To our RGV Teddy Bear trans members, we will create events that we can continue to enjoy together in siblinghood (bearhood).”
Dallas Voice has reached out to Dallas Bears, host of the annual Texas Bear Round-Up, for comment but has not yet heard from the group.
Dallas Voice is also aware of some serious allegations made in social media posts regarding a member of the Grizzly Pines staff. Because we have not yet had time to verify those allegations, we will not be printing them here.
— Tammye Nash
Of course gay men could afford to be accomadating to trans men. A biological woman in a space for gay men doesn't pose a threat. It might be awkward but not threatening. I wouldn't put it past the TQ+ to use this as a gotcha against women wanting their own space. A TIM in a space for women can do far more than just make things awkward.

Mance Lipscomb: Texas Sharecropper and Songster (1960)
Mance Lipscomb's name doesn't usually surface amongst the first tier of country blues artists -- Robert Johnson, Charley Patton, Blind Lemon Jefferson, Son House, etc. -- but his music and life story are as authentic and representative of the genre as one could ask.
The son of former slaves claiming both African and Native American origins, he was born Beau De Glen Lipscomb in 1895, near Navasota, Texas, and left school after the third grade to work the fields alongside his mother.
Mance, too, eventually became a tenant farmer who played guitar and sang at local gatherings he called "Saturday Night Suppers," until he was "discovered" at age 65 (and 65 years ago), by folklorist Robert 'Mack' McCormick (*) and Arhoolie (**) Records founder Chris Strachwitz.
As told in the Texas Monthly article I reference below, in 1960 Strachwitz met McCormick in Houston and the pair proceeded to drive around the surrounding rural areas, literally knocking on doors and looking for musicians to record.
One of those knocks led them to Lipscomb, whom they promptly set about recording -- alone: just him and his guitar -- for what would become Arhoolie's maiden release, named Texas Sharecropper and Songster. (***)
What you'll hear is a natural storyteller whose raw but confident vocals and accomplished, expressive "dead-thumb" fingerpicking technique, were obviously honed over countless front porch performances for family and neighbors.
Take "Freddie," where Lipscomb tackles the all-too-common jilted lover theme with an almost casual melancholy, building his narrative from different perspectives and slight variations on the key lyric: "You got mad, you got bad; With your gun in your hand".
Later in this set, he wastes no time with nuance or subtlety on the downright morbid "Ella Speed," which may be one of the inspirations for Johnny Cash's "Delia's Gone," thanks to its cold-blooded opening verse:
"Well, the first time I shot Ella; I shot her through the side; Second time, I, could not tell where; But the third time I shot her; I shot her through the head; You know that shot musta killed poor Ella dead"
But know that these sinister examples are just one facet of Lipscomb's talents, which see him smirking through "Sugar Babe" ("All I want my babe to do [is] make five dollars and give me two"), rocking the perennial traditional "Mama Don't Allow," and heaping classic blues double-entendres into "Rock Me All Night Long" and "Shake, Shake, Mama."
Mance also puts his own spin on blues, folk, and R&B standards, old and new-ish, like Blind Lemon's "Jack O' Diamonds" (****), Big Joe Williams' "Baby Please Don't Go," Wendell Hall's "Ain't Gonna Rain No Mo," and Ma Rainey's "See See Rider (Going to Louisiana)."
And although "Bout a Spoonful" shares its theme with Charley Patton's "Spoonful Blues," it has little in common, instrumentally, with either the original or the classic electric version coincidentally also recorded in 1960 at Chess by Howlin' Wolf.
With so much going for it, Texas Sharecropper and Songster saw Lipscomb embraced by the '60s' booming folk scene, leading to a major label deal and numerous festival appearances, including the 1963 Monterey Folk Festival, where he played alongside the likes of Bob Dylan, Joan Baez, and Peter, Paul and Mary.
The album was entered into the Library of Congress' National Recording Registry in 2013, though Lipscomb sadly passed away in 1976, at the ripe age of 80, two years after suffering a stroke.
He is buried in his hometown of Navasota, which apparently still hosts a yearly blues festival in his honor, and dedicated a bronze sculpture of the bluesman in 2011, which now sits, guitar in hand, in the aptly named Mance Lipscomb Park.
* An important but controversial figure, also responsible for introducing music fans to Lightnin' Hopkins, McCormick was posthumously profiled in Texas Monthly and his story is well worth reading.
** The name "Arhoolie" was suggested by McCormick and derived from a word for a field holler.
*** The album was later reissued simply as Texas Songster, when Lipscombe -- a proud man -- objected to the "sharecropper" label.
**** Here, he plays slide with a jackknife, which may explain (or not) the mysterious, creaking noise heard throughout.

Ray Wylie Hubbard ~ Count my Blessings (Live on KNCE)
Mama gimme a nickel and a deck of cards Said go on and play in the back yard Walking down the alley come my uncle lonnie Said lemme teach ya about 3 card monty Take the ace of hearts and two black queens Flip'em over so they can't be seen Spin' em around four or five times Bet a nickel find the ace and win a dime Ten minutes later I had thirty five dollars Singing ain't misbehavin' by the great Fats Waller
I believe I'm gonna count my blessings I believe I am gonna count my blessings
~ ♫♪♫ ~
Now I saw a black crow on a fence post Singing away like Sam Hopkins' ghost He sang when you see I ain't breathin' no more Nail my feathers to a old barn door Or drag my carcass out behind the shed Just make sure you're pretty sure I'm dead Ask a Ouija board if you can't quite tell Or if I start to stink like the floors in hell Go to Navasota after I'm done dying It don't do you no good sitting around crying
I believe I'm gonna count my blessings I believe I am gonna count my blessings
~ ♫♪♫ ~
So I got me a pencil and a moleskin book When I heard Bertha Franklin shot and killed Sam Cooke I Wrote down December 11, 1964 Ain't gonna be twisting the night away no more It took 15 minutes for the jury to decide Cause of death's justified homicide Liza Boyer wasn't called by the prosecution Later on she's arrested for prostitution La hacienda motel had a busted down door Sam's wallet and his money was never accounted for
And I believe I'm gonna count my blessings I believe I'm gonna count my blessings And everyday I believe I'm gonna count my blessings I believe I'm gonna count my blessings I believe....

Mance Lipscomb (April 9, 1895 - January 30, 1976) was a blues singer, guitarist, and songster, born Beau De Glen Lipscomb to an African American father and an African American and Native-American mother in Navasota, Texas. He spent most of his life as a tenant farmer in Texas.
When he was fourteen, his mother bought him a guitar for $1.50. He learned to play the instrument and became an accomplished performer, playing at local gatherings in what he called “Saturday night suppers.”
In 1960, music producer Chris Strachwiz of Arhoolie Records and blues fan Mack McCormick arrived in Navasota, Texas, where they discovered and recorded him. The trio’s work produced what would become Arhoolie Records’ first LP and his first album called Texas Sharecropper and Songster. He would release his second album, Trouble in Mind. The album included singles like Careless Love, Alabama Bound, Night Time is the Right Time, Motherless Children,” and “Trouble in Mind.” In 1963, he and other folk artists appeared at the first Monterey Folk Festival. He would release other albums during his career, including Mance Lipscomb: Texas Songster Volume 2 and Mance Lipscomb Vol 3: Texas Songster in a Live Performance.
He was the subject of a documentary by Les Blank called A Well-Spent Life. He became an influential figure in the American folk music revival. He became a regular performer at folk festivals and folk-blues clubs across the US. Besides being known for his singing and intricate guitar style, but also known for his storytelling and as a country “sage.”
He remained in poverty for the remainder of his life. Three of his albums were released posthumously, including You’ll Never Find Another Man Like Mance, Mance Lipscomb: Texas Blues Guitar, and The Best of Mance Lipscomb. A book about him called I Say Me for a Parable: The Oral Autobiography of Mance Lipscomb, Texas Bluesman. He was inducted into the Blues Hall of Fame, and a bronze sculpture of him was unveiled in Mance Lipscomb Park in Navasota. The annual Navasota Blues Festival is held in his honor. #africanhistory365 #africanexcellence
