Dan Pelzer, who died on July 1 at the age of 92, left his friends and family a 109-page list of all the books he’s read since 1962.
Though Pelzer’s family considered distributing the list at his funeral, they realized it was far too long to share in that way. So instead, they scanned the list and created a website sharing his reads called, What Dan Read.
In a post shared on the Columbus Metropolitan Library’s Facebook page, Pelzer’s daughter, Marci, wrote, “ALL of his books were Columbus Metropolitan Library books. Nobody loved the library more than Dan.”
“When we were little, he took us to the downtown library every Saturday morning and enrolled us in every summer reading program,” Marci shared with the library. “He was a regular at the Livingston and then Whitehall branches until he could no longer read. I'm sure he would be among your highest circulation and longest term borrowers.”
In Dan’s obituary, the family asked that in place of flowers, donations be made to Kinship Community Food Center, adding, “You could also honor Dan by reading ‘a real page turner.’ ”

German press release:
"Study tracks physical and cognitive impairments associated with long COVID: Researchers following nearly 1,000 people with post-COVID-19 syndrome found few changes to their symptoms in the second year of illness"
From paper: "Improvement among patients with earlier PCS was associated with … not attending a rehabilitation programme". Put another way, people who attended a rehab programme were less likely to improve!
"Exercise intolerance with post-exertional malaise (PEM) for >14 h and symptoms compatible with myalgic encephalomyelitis/chronic fatigue syndrome were reported by 35.6% & 11.6% of participants with persistent PCS patients, respectively."

Newxie brings the joy of nixies without the 170V power supply 💡🕰️✨
If there's one thing that melts our hearts, it's a nixie clock - we built one 20 years ago!
but nixies are hard to find now that we don't hit up the MIT swapfest at 7am anymore
well we saw this funky faux nixie clock
http://www.unitedcreation.co/marvel-tubes/
and realized they're just using the same 1.14" TFTs we stock already
so why not re-spin the breakout into a skinny right-angle-mount version? Instead of card edge, we have 2x7 right angle headers - both rows are the same contact, but this way, we get more mechanical stability. We kept the level shifting to work with 3.3V or 5V microcontrollers but dropped the micro SD card. You could stack these side by side on a breadboard with as little as 0.7" pitch!

Need to publicly shame this local school board a bit. I wish this would get out on bigger news. I live near here, and the only people talking about it are teachers.
On Thursday, the (heavily conservative) school board of Rutherford County, a massive suburb of Nashville, Tennessee voted to pass a resolution calling for the closure of the national borders. Their argument centered around complaining about how difficult and expensive it was to educate the county's growing ESL population.
This is so hateful, out of line, and insulting to our students. They're a disgrace to education as a profession.

A next-generation reactor could transform water and sunlight into clean fuel
Tumblr media
The idea relies on a natural but complex process: splitting water molecules into oxygen and hydrogen using photocatalysts. These photocatalysts, when exposed to light, initiate chemical reactions that release hydrogen, a key energy resource. However, existing systems struggle to achieve sufficient efficiency for large-scale use.
Photo: Aerial view of a 1,076 sq. ft. (100 m²) operational photocatalyst system for solar hydrogen production. The system uses 1,600 panel reactor units (each 96.88 sq. in. [625 cm²]), where 48 panel reactor units are integrated to form a 32.3 sq. ft. (3 m²) module, and 33 and one-third (33 + 1/3) modules are connected to create the system. The panel reactor is linked to a gas separation facility.
Tumblr media
In detail, the developed prototype relies on photocatalytic sheets capable of capturing solar energy to decompose water molecules. Unlike conventional systems, this reactor uses a two-step configuration, known as the Z-scheme, which effectively separates oxygen and hydrogen. This approach not only improves the efficiency of the process but also reduces the risks associated with the formation of explosive gases like oxyhydrogen.
Through this method, researchers demonstrated near-perfect energy conversion under ultraviolet light, an important milestone for optimizing photocatalysts. The team designed a 1,076 sq. ft. (100 m²) reactor capable of operating outdoors with natural light, proving the feasibility of large-scale deployment. This device incorporates advanced safety measures to manage potentially hazardous by-products while allowing the direct separation of hydrogen and oxygen.
This configuration promises a safer and more sustainable solution for hydrogen production. Furthermore, developing photocatalysts sensitive to visible light remains a priority, as it would allow for the capture of a larger portion of the solar spectrum and further improve overall efficiency.
