I FINALLY listened to “songs” by Adrianne Lenker and oml…every single song is soooo good. Idk what took me so long to listen to her (especially a full album) but her music quite literally encapsulates my taste. (Also there are multiple songs that are very Neil Perry coded and I cried :p) Anyway so good 10/10 would recommend 🙂‍↕️

Look I know I relate Neil to a new character every other post (one day I will do a tumblr poll on which character is most Neil-coded but not today) but also Ophelia and Neil parallels go so hard???
Both in a Shakespeare play that results in their death by their own hands (Ophelia obviously is a character in Hamlet which is a Shakespeare play who, when she fell in the lake, giddily sang until her dress became too heavy and drowned her some saying it a suicide as she was consumed by grief over the loss of her father, and Neil acting as Puck in Midsummer Nights Dream starts the fight with his father that results in his suicide)
Both associated with the color green and with nature
Both were obedient to their controlling fathers who used them to fulfill a plan they didn’t want to be apart of which also ties to the loss of their autonomy at the hands of their fathers (Ophelia’s father used her as a pawn without her knowledge, which is taking away her autonomy, in the plot against her lover hamlet who she did not want the demise of, through having her tell him all of Hamlet’s actions so he could figure out his motive and such, and Neil’s father wanted Neil to follow the life plan he had planned out for him even though Neil didn’t want that, which is taking away his autonomy)
Both their lovers hate their fathers
Both to some extent were believed to be liars that caused people to be angry with them and want to send them off potentially for ‘what’s best for them’ but also potentially for punishment (Hamlet believing Ophelia was deceitful because he was thinking all women were deceitful because mommy issues so he rejects her and says for her to go to the nunnery, some say to preserve her innocence and some believe it could’ve been slang meaning for her to go to a brothel because he wanted nothing to do with her because he thought she was part of the plot against him, and Neil’s father believed he was a liar because he went behind his back and joined the play, and he was going to send him away from welton to a military school and then make him go to med school to become a doctor, one interpretation being that it is because he believes this is the best path to make sure Neil is successful, and another interpretation being he wants to punish him through isolating Neil and taking him away from his friends for disobeying him)
Both spoke in rhyme before their death (Neil reciting Puck’s closing poem and Ophelia died singing a hymn or poem while still floating in the lake)
Both were giddy when they were not supposed to be, same day as their deaths too (Neil preforming in the play earlier that night that he wasn’t supposed to be in and Ophelia going mad which caused her to be uncharacteristically giddy to cope with her grief)
Both have a flower crown/wreath which them taking off to set down was an important part of their death
Both were drowning metaphorically and Ophelia literally due to a lose in their lives that leads to their death at their own hands
Both fell at their deaths even if it wasn’t how they died, as a way to literally show the characters metaphorical downfall (Neil hitting the floor of the study after shooting himself and Ophelia falling in the lake she drowns in when trying to put her flower crown on the branches of a willow)

These two have so much in common man
Both movies have ‘seize the day’ as a main catchphrase/anthem; the more outgoing one wants to reject the expectations set out for them by the world they are in and escape into a world that isn’t real; both of the two outgoing ones have artistic pursuits as a side plot (Jack with the painting and Neil with acting); both have a theater as a key location (obviously Neil, and newsies has the meetings in the theater and Jack is friends with the woman from the theater, love her but im blanking on the name 🙏, they even have the whole dance number there), both are period pieces, there is the looming threat of being caught by the authority figures; story about overcoming oppressive systems; a rag-tag found family group of mostly boys with one girl (unless we are talking about the UK version of Newsies, I believe they made the Brooklyn kids girls in the uk one), like bruh I can’t this is same plot different font and I love them both so much
Same dynamic, different font

A more outgoing boy befriends a more shy and anxious one, leading them to develop an intense bond that's basically a romantic relationship. Obviously it's not a one-to-one comparison because of how different the stories are but I think they're similar enough

In case you wanted another reason on why Neil is sub-textually gay, in the scene after the play when mr perry argues with Neil and Neil says “I’ve got to tell you what I feel” and mr perry says “is it more of this acting business?” and Neil is defeated and says “nothing”, it’s painfully obvious that mr perry has a suspicion that Neil is gay because he says that line “is it more of this acting business?” that insinuates this with the use of the word “it”. He has an inkling of what “it” is and Neil feels intimidated and exposed because of that, he knows that there’s more to what he’s feeling than just acting, he knows what “it” is and he can’t tell anyone. He knows he can’t answer mr perry’s question because it’s just too hard to get the words out and he knows it will make everything even worse in the already brutal situation he’s facing.
I know how he feels in terms of feeling something and only saying the more “acceptable” side of the story and keeping the less “acceptable” side of the story hidden and wanting to take it to the grave because it’s so stressful to face. Acting is everything to him. Acting and Todd and Keating awakened so many things in his mind and he knew what he wanted to live for.

I feel like some people really overlook Todd's trauma and it bothers me a lot. I saw someone say forever ago that he was "too whiny" for them in the book and that REALLY bothered me...
Cause like, it's cannon that Todd's father outright - point blank - told him at a young age that he would only be as valuable as the chemicals in his body bottled up and soild raw unless he became something "worth while". Like, I'm sorry, I'd be too whiny too if my father said those words to me, excuse my baby boy for being severely traumatized!!
That's so crazy to say... Like the author gave us more depth to Todd's character and more weight to his arc and they thought that made him whiny! Huh??? Especially cause it makes it even more sad when you think about how heartbreaking it is that Todd was able to stand the societal pressures cause he's so used to them that he became desensitized to them at all young age while Neil wasn't because (personal headcannon/analysis, I swear to Jesus if someone tries me on this I'll explode) he wasn't exposed to such parental behaviors until he was in high school (to me, personally, based on previously stated info about Todd's family and what we can infer from the other Poets, Mr. Perry was a generally good father until the pressure was on (from society and the system) for Neil to amount to something (ie high school age cause that's when you tend to start thinking about careers) but this isn't about the Perry's, it's about Todd, back on track)
This poor boy spent his whole life in his brother's shadow. Todd's grades weren't initially good enough for Welton, meanwhile Jeffrey was one of Welton's best. The pressure for greatness was a constant for Todd. He was always being told he wasn't good enough and that he'd never be good enough. Todd was simply not as good academically as Jeffrey, he could never, no matter how hard he tried, apply himself enough to even be close to his older brother. And you know his father never let him forget that. (Infer what you may from that, it's mostly what I mean)
Bottom line, Todd deserves more attention, we talk a lot about Neil's trauma but never enough about Todd's, he likely had the worst family out of everyone else

Not sure what this means but do with it what you will:
Charlie: Alright, guys. From now on, we’ll be using codenames. You can address me as “Eagle One.” *points at Neil* Neil, codename, “Been There, Done That.”
Neil: *too stunned to speak*
Charlie: *turns to Knox* Knox is “Currently Doing That.”
Knox: *high-fives Charlie*
Charlie: Meeks is “It Happened Once in a Dream.”
Meeks: *jokingly* Yes, sir.
Charlie: *points finger-guns at Todd* Todd, codename, “If I Had To Pick A Bro.”
Todd: But, I-
Charlie: And Pitts is…“Eagle Two.”
Pitts: Oh thank god.
