for once, i don't really think it's nemesis' fault! :p although, she and neme actually have a pretty decent relationship.

artemis (who we'll call allie) is bottom of the barrel, as far as the council goes. she's only barely above sol rank-wise, so like nemesis, she takes any opportunity to exert superiority that she can.

that's why they don't really get along. allie's mindset is more in line with the council itself than sol's is. she's not afraid to destroy a few planets; he refuses to.

both of them are pretty badly infantilized by the council, but where sol struggles in this position, allie chooses to embrace it — to the point where she puppets her planets around like she's playing dolls. (she's coping)

the way i see her, she's an acting "golden child" of the low-rankers, even though she's not respected on an individual level.

it's why i call them "siblings". they're not actually related, nor are they close in any capacity, but they are the council's ""children"" (and i say this with Such heavy quotes. grown ass stars 😭😭😭)

her original concept was made by my beauotiful wife @basilirl and tweaked slightly by yours truly. everyone say thank you nona or else there would be no allie!!

Thank you so much! It's funny because I'm not usually a writer that sticks to canon settings, preferring to write aus, but D20 does such a great job of world building that I deeply just want to hang out in those settings.

Our Rituals of Care was an unintentional byproduct of Tender Ferocity. When I wrote about the pilot programs post-s2 lives through the lens of a museum exhibit, I had to invent a lot of backstory without showing most of it. But I wound up working so much out in my head that I knew I wanted to explore some of it.

As you may have noticed, I like to create a lot of OCs to make a world flush out and I knew from the start that Evan needed his own people. Both because his job is so particular and because part of what he needs to grow is not to rely entirely on the pilot program for his support structure. I really want to go back and finish Shruti's story once I'm done with my current projects.

You Can Come of Age just spilled out of me. We leave Riz in such an odd place in canon, both coming into himself, but also not much of his story resolved (I really enjoy Junior Year, but I would say it's the least emotionally satisfying for the three seasons). I kept thinking about who he could turn out to be and because the theme of Fantasy High is growing up, I wanted to keep following that rope. Who does Riz become when he can no longer be defined by his friends? What does it look like when love is just starting to become resentment?

There's this interesting tension in Fantasy High were the characters confront very real and heavy issues, but the natural vibe at the table is this borderline surrealist humor that doesn't always allow for those feelings to breathe. The character that gets sacrificed to that the most in Junior Year is Fabian. There's no time to delve into how utterly abandoned Fabian is because we don't really see family time with anyone, which would've emphasized how much he's lacking it. Lou, as ever, brought a warmth to Fabian's arrogant weirdness that makes him endlessly endearing, but there's no room to breathe.

So that leaves us with these two friends, who are wrestling off screen with enormous issues, which is the stuff fanfic dreams are made of. Sure Riz defeats Baron to some extent, but he never deals with that Baron represented. Sure Fabian has a wildly successful year of high school, but what does he do with that when his mother comes home pregnant and seemingly set up to shove him out of the nest with no further parenting?

This doesn't feel very director's cut so I throw in that I knew about Neme right from the beginning and was desperately trying to find a place to naturally insert them into You Can Come of Age. Once I did, it just didn't feel like enough to explain the weirdness between them and Fabian. So as soon as I posted the last chapter of Riz's story, I started in on Fabian's. It is so fucked to know your little sibling will out live you by millennia. I had to tug on that string.

deepspace babysitting horror scifi story masterpost

Premise

unadvisedly, with so much else on my plate, I'm contemplating a subversive mech vs kaiju story where humanity forms a strange, body horror-esque bond with monsters to repel sentient robotic invaders

after coming up empty-handed forever, I decided on the name for the monsters and by extension the project: progenitors revivification project

I didn't want to use something like leviathan or colossus, with obvious biblical or greek origins, when this is supposed to take place in the remains of an unnamed planet (not earth). they choose "progenitors" for the monsters as they found their remains in the depths of the shards and see them as some far-flung ancestor

the plot revolves around the second generation of progenitor pilots being trained on a secret deepspace mission

Setting

most of the story takes place on a spaceship called the Javelin but the characters originally lived on the splintered remains of an enormous planet. each Shard has its own community and environment, held together by a shield. the Shards themselves remain in the vague shape of a planet mid-explosion and don't drift off into space thanks to a tridecahedron gravity well in the dead center - a side for each Shard

12 of the Shards practice self governance while the 13th is Coalition territory and considered neutral ground. the Coalition has delegates and volunteers from all 12 Shards, acting as a cooperative body not unlike the UN (with considerably more power)

the Coalition acts for the good of the People. maybe not so much for the individual…

The Coalition

those born and raised on the Coalition Shard then chose a life in service to the Coalition—which most of them did—underwent a gruesome procedure. through surgical brain modification, their emotions were modulated, dimmed, capped. you couldn’t make them angry or sad and the smiles most often plastered on their faces were shallow. meaningless. it was supposed to eradicate distraction, personal bias, and put the public at ease. catastrophic failure for the latter.

thelnym (main oc) always thought it was like growing up around ghosts – they had the shape of humans, the faces, but they weren’t. not really.

some merciful force in the universe spared thelnym from that

the Coalition has two main branches: Administrative and Military. the Administrative branch is headed by the Chief Administrator and consists of several departments (judicial, science, resources). the Fleet Admiral heads the Military branch. only those in the administrative branch undergo brain modification surgery and must be performed voluntarily. those from other Shards decline the procedure most of the time. rumor has it this hinders their ability to rise through the ranks but officially this is stated not to be true. “modified Coalition member” is the official name for recipients of the surgery while colloquially they’re known by the less offensive “alt” (as in altered) and the much more derogatory “husk”

Thelnym Osgrove (they/them), one of the three original progenitor pilots and the sole survivor. they've been tied to the Coalition for a long time: a ward since early childhood, a progenitor pilot in their teens then spent the last 20+ years in isolated supervision (more info here)
