Communication Breakdown at DC Studios?

Late last night, some interesting news was sent over. James Gunn and Andy Muschietti have apparently not spoken since Gunn started filming Superman. Immediately, that raises a few questions as so much other information has dropped in the last little while.

Let's dive right into the belly of the beast. As CEO of DC Studios, this just looks bad for James Gunn. Speaking out in the press about how Andy is the man he wants for Brave and the Bold, yet he has been having internal discussions without him about the future of the character. The example I used with a long-time friend of mine was this. Imagine he hired me to write/produce and direct his next Flash project given my love for the character. He allowed me to maintain that I am fully onboard for this project on every major podcast or interview that wanted to speak with me. All the while, he knew behind the scenes he was having second thoughts about the creative vision. That part is acceptable. Changing your creative view is acceptable. However, letting your talent find out via social media like a casual audience member is not.

The quote above comes from a podcast that was originally recorded in Spanish and translated. It was reported by both Film Junkee on Instagram and ComicBook.com as well. It seems like Gunn, Reeves and Muschietti are all deliberately being vague on the subject matter but are also saying different things. Gunn has said there have been thoughts about Pattinson joining the DCU, Reeves is saying we need to wait and see what the future brings (which is a complete change of heart) and Muschietti is flat out denying the merger.

At this point in the game, Andy has nothing to lose by speaking out. He is speaking solely based on the conversations he has had with Gunn. Which is valid. Gunn needs to get his house and order over at DC and make a decision once and for all. We are nearly 2 years into the DCU, which has fully aired its first project, and the second is 6 months away. How is so much about such a crucial character still so up in the air? James Gunn has final decision-making power over at DC studios, so make a choice and stick with it. Stop saying one thing and immediately going back on it. Choose a Batman and face the critics and audiende members that have things to say. After all, that is the job you signed up for. There can no longer be half measures, or this DC iteration will fail just as fast as prior attempts.

outside of the fact that everyone who has sex is murdered by the narrative, this is a surprisingly chill portrayal of female sexuality? these teen girls are horny and actively enjoying Getting It On with their boytoys. no pushy boyfriends sneaking in through their bedroom windows--these ladies are taking the initiative to sneak out and GET SOME. one of them gets laid and then immediately orders her boyfriend to get her a beer. (yes she gets Slashered soon afterward, but so does the boyfriend so honestly, gender equality.) yes the Final Girl is the only one not having sex, but she's not bullied for that, nor are her friends slut shamed except possibly by being murdered by the narrative

actually the only character who is shown being morally condemned on-screen is michael myers. specifically FOR his violent overreaction to other people's sex lives. (people he is spying on). metaphorically, the villain is American Puritanism sticking its judgy nose into other people's business.

but actually the real villain is the doctor. guy's a judgemental, shaming, pathologizing asshole. and he's been in charge of michael's care since he was SIX YEARS OLD? kid never had a chance. i'd go on a killing spree too

also the parents. where are the parents? it's halloween night and all the teenage girls are home babysitting their younger siblings? come to think of it, michael's first victim was his own older sister, whom he killed while she was babysitting him. teen girls are really shouldering a labour burden here. maybe parentification is the true villain

side note: mike commits his first murder wearing a clown costume...which is never referenced again? his 'iconic' costume is a generic mask and wig and jumpsuit, when we coulda had a Killer Clown Michael Myers??? travesty

i like how the Final Girl and her friend casually smoke weed in her car. yeah she's an honor student and her friend is the sheriff's daughter. yeah they smoke weed. so what it's 1978

(to reiterate, mike is 21 and should be at the club. im not saying he shouldn't be rampaging, im saying it's sad that he broke out, tasted freedom for the first time in his life, and immediately snuck back into his childhood home to go rampaging. let's have a remake where he goes to a nightclub and has a few beers. maybe some slutty dancing. then rampage)

Of course we know that Eddie is the big fantasy nerd, with his love of D&D, he was probably an avid reader of The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings, and almost definitely made Wayne sit through numerous re-watches of The Wizard of Oz as a kid.

But when he gets together with Steve he realises that Steve 'the hair' Harrington isn't quite the meat-head jock that he remembers him to be in high school.

Eddie was flicking through the channels looking for something for them to watch when Steve comes in holding a bowl of popcorn in his hands as he scoots up close to Eddie.

"Hey, go back a minute, I think I saw something good." Steve says, tapping Eddie on the arm.

Eddie flicks back the channel and it lands on a re-run episode of the original series of Star Trek.

"Man, I used to be obsessed with this show as a kid." Steve says, throwing back a handful of popcorn. "Never missed an episode."

"Wait, you wanna watch Star Trek?" Eddie asked, raising his eyebrows at Steve's admission. His boyfriend was a secret geek.

"Yeah it's a good show. I think I even dressed up as Captain Kirk for Halloween one year. " scratch that Steve Harrington was a full on nerd.

"Sure, we can watch this." Eddie smirks, settling back against Steve.

"Hey, Eddie, did you ever watch that show about the alien in the time-travelling police box?"

It appears that the nerd-levels ran deep with Steve.

Eddie shakes his head at his boyfriend.

"Always watched that one too, actually, I still do." Steve smiles. "My grandma knitted me the long multicoloured scarf for Christmas when I was younger."

"Stevie, why didn't you tell me you were such a science fiction nerd?"

"You never asked."

Eddie might have been the fantasy lover between the two of them, but when it came down to it, Steve was most definitely the sci-fi geek.

God the rogue proposal is going to live in my head rent free for a while. Rogue isn’t a good liar!! He doesn’t lie at all during the episode. Any deception or mystery around him is that he just doesn’t say much, and when he does, he doesn’t give details. very sophie-like of sophie to use the name Violet Cesario for her dating profile. as in Viola, a character from Shakespeare’s Twelfth Night, who disguises herself as a man named Cesario. for the record, Twelfth Night is a romantic comedy and this is an alias for a dating app. i hope she doesn’t want to date anyone who shares her interest in Shakespearean theatre because that will very much read as a fake name to them lol.

something that really gets me about the doctor is that if your looking, it’s very obvious that they’re the same person across regenerations. the important things stick- the wit, the thinking under pressure, the emotional constipation, (which gets lessened over time, but that’s less on an on/off regeneration thing than you might think and more of a character arc thing so it further proves my point) their inherent love for humanity, their drama, their nonviolent tendencies.

all the obvious changes between the doctors are surface level, and if you go poking around you find that they’re all really similar to each other. I just love watching different peoples portrayals of one single character, and I think it’s really fun to see that regeneration really is mostly just changing the body, not the soul.

DC Decisions causing crazy confusion

James Gunn came out and said that season 2 of Peacemaker is essentially not going to be canon to season one. That is probably the most confusing thing he could say at this moment. Somehow season 2 is going to tie into a world that features his new Superman movie.

There is a lot to unpack here. This confusing because Peacemaker was very loose to begin with. The only two DCU confirmations in Peacemaker were The Flash and Aquaman. Waller is going to remain the same in this new universe. He had his storytelling way to explain anything he needed after The Flash. There is no indication with the cast all returning this was ever going to be a full reboot anyway.

By doing this he essentially is throwing away all of the character development that occurred during season one. Casual viewers as well will be confused when most of season 2 makes zero sense at all.

During Gunn's time all his comments on social media have led to more and more confusion among the fanbase. Many including myself believed when he stepped away from Henry Cavill he should have went the way of full reboot. It just makes sense. Seeing the same cast members appear with no previous ties to any story is going to be odd. It's not going to flow.

Having spoken with some good friends of mine (check out Nerd Doctors on YouTube) we have said time and time again this is a way for Gunn to keep his friends and those he cast on board in his new DCEU. That to me is a sure fire way to fail. These characters are bigger than Gunn playing in the sandbox with his friends or even casting people he has previously worked with before. No one should be safe unless it is best for business and if that means throwing away the continuity established in The Suicide Squad and Peacemaker then so be it. This is supposed to be a new age for DC and a step away from the problems that have always plagued them.

how is Doctor Who landmark queer sci-fi?

I don't think the 2005 showrunner, first and foremost a very prevalent author of queer fiction, can or should be disentangled from the show, both literally and thematically, and I don't think it can really be understated how groundbreaking it was for pg rated sci fi (or really any sci fi) in the year 2005 to have a recurring character in a heroic bisexual man who the doctor openly flirts with and kisses in a dramatic context, much less that this character heads a major spin off aimed at a queer audience. among other things.

slight tangent but honestly I feel like queer discourse can be a bit dismissive of this sort of stuff, art that they don't find to be notably gay by 2025 standards, or which comes from a queer perspective but in which queerness isn't baked into the literal premise, works that are metaphorical; these often get dismissed as less good or less important or less gay somehow and I think that's a really limiting way of looking at queer art. Stuff like doctor who, in my opinion, should be looked at in much the same way we'd consider davies' other works, rather than only notable when the lead specifically is explicitly characterized as queer (as he is currently, 20 years down the line)
