How do I submit a data recovery request for a multi-drive system?
If you have a RAID system that needs data recovery service, you will select “RAID” in the media type field on the submission form. For a 2-drive RAID system, you will answer the question “how many drives are in the RAID” question by selecting the number 2 in the drop down menu. If you have a 4-drive RAID system, you will select the number 4 in the drop down menu and so on.
How does In-lab Data Recovery pricing work?
You pay a flat engagement fee for every recovery case (for one or multiple drives in case of RAID) you submit at the time of case submission and it covers the cost of initial evaluation. Two-way shipping is not complimentary in most locations globally. Once data has been successfully recovered, your payment method on file will be charged for the cost of data recovery. To make the entire process transparent, the total cost is clearly stated even before you submit the case and we will never charge anything extra.
If I lost data on one of the RAID drives, why do I have to send in all of the RAID drives for recovery?
In most RAID disk failures, the failure isn't a complete catastrophe and the user can still easily access data within the RAID. RAID systems are typically used for speed and/or redundancy of data. As a result, they can sometimes have a catastrophic failure, such as corruption of the RAID array or multiple disk failure in which your data isn't accessible. If this type of failure occurs, and you are not able to see the redundant mirror image of the data within the RAID, something serious has happened. In this scenario, rebuilding the array with each independent disk included is the only way possible. For that reason, you will need to send in all of the RAID drives for recovery.
What is the media category for a Network Attached System (NAS) on the submission form?
Please submit single drive NAS as a “Single HDD” (Hard Disk Drive) and multiple drive NAS as a RAID + number indicating the number of drives.

Year End List - #8

No Hands - Joey Valence And Brae
Main Genres: Hardcore Rap, Alternative Rap
A decent sampling of: Nerdcore Rap, Boom Bap, Mid-School Hip Hop, EDM, Comedy Rap
We live in an age now where certain artists can be pretty accurately described as having a "very online" sound. Usually these are artists not really belonging to any known geographical scenes, and who have a tendency to lean into things like meme culture, self-referential humour, references to online drama, and post-irony.
Though technically a neutral term in itself, I would say I more often use "very online" as a pejorative. I mostly reserve the term for artists I perceive as placing "cleverness", "edginess" and "esoteric" taste over captivating songwriting, good beats, engaging lyrics, or interesting sound textures.
100 Gecs would kinda be my go-to example of this phenomenon. Maybe I'm not Zoomer enough to get it (again, I'm pretty sure I'm a ZiLleNniAL, AkShuAlLy), but the Gecs sound and most of the hyperpop scene it spawned has always seemed to put style over substance and being "cutting-edge" and insular to internet culture over being, well, good.
There's also Dorian Electra, who in their Flamboyant days could be considered an example of "very online" done right, but eventually trended towards the style over substance issue pretty hard on their last two records.
Kind of an awkward way to start this review frankly, but the point I'm trying to get at is that I'm not easily impressed by esoteric internet references in music just because I'm a computer-dwelling over-stimulated nerd who gets all of those references. So when I do like this kind of music, I take it as pretty solid proof that there's more substance to the artist's online success than just their online-ness.
Joey Valence and Brae are the latter kind of "very online" artist. And yeah, I'll admit I'm not some kind of super fan that found these guys early on. I very much discovered them through the big exposure they got this year through the usual online channels that folks blow up on these days.
And I gotta admit I'm not entirely sold on their online presence. They play to a very stereotypically zoomer audience in the way they promote themselves on social media, and some of that's got me feeling very old-man-yelling-at-cloud. But the music speaks for itself.
I am 100% not original in making the comparison to this group, but imma do it anyway: ever wondered what it would sound like if the Beastie Boys had grown up with Xboxes, Playstation 2s and high speed internet in their homes? Well, now you know.
Joey Valence and Brae are two massive dorks and unapologetic 2000s kids from State College, Pennsylvania who can spit absolute fire on the mic. Their flow and general attitude hearkens back to an era when the term "hip hop" actually referred to hipping and hopping (yes I feel incredibly corny writing that). LL Cool J, Public Enemy, Wu-Tang Clan and many of the other in-your-face old-heads of the 80s and early 90s are pretty clear reference points for their style as rappers. And yes, the Beastie Boys too.
As for the record, No Hands is the hip hop record that I imagine me and my straight guy childhood friends would've made when we were jacked up on sugar and doritos while playing Smash Bros and WWE Smackdown Games during our late night sleepovers. I'm not entirely convinced Joey and Brae aren't just playable extras from a Tony Hawk or Matt Hoffman game that got inexplicably zapped into the real world and decided to start writing music with their newfound sentience.
The beats all over this thing are flashy, animated, vintage, and fugging seggsy. In addition to the classic beats, an assortment of EDM styles augment these tracks, from atmospheric DnB to garage house and miami bass. A real tour-de-force of different kinds of party music. Meanwhile, the lyrics are just corny enough to separate the posers from the folks who sincerely appreciate some silly fucking bangers, squareness be damned.
"BUSSIT" is a goddamn bludgeon to the balls of a opener. Pure no-fucks-given personality on those opening lines followed by that crunchy ass beat drop. "Don't need money / I just need a butt" gets a good snort out of me every time I hear that line. The DnB bridge is heavenly, like waking up in some ethereal playstation menu select screen world.
Also, let's just acknowledge this now - Joey is a total ass-man (which, same), and I appreciate how he manages to sneak in a bar rhapsodizing about the beauty of butt on every other track. Man's got a passion.
Danny Brown appears outta nowhere two tracks in on "PACKAPUNCH" and it makes me go practically apeshit. A diss track that's so silly and tongue-in-cheek that it barely threatens a kitten, but it does exude ungodly levels of cool. These guys really play to the beat of their own drum and I mad respect that.
"NO HANDS" is a sassy little jazz rap ditty with some masterful golden age hip hop turntable sounds. "Was always a misfit / teachers like thongs always up in my business / And I failed statistics...but I aced sex ed" is another line that gets a stupid giggle out of me like I'm back in grade school and someone just made a fart joke.
By far the breeziest beat is on "WHERE U FROM", which got my heaviest rotation from the record. Swanky 8-bit chords are mixed in with claps, hi-hats, and kicks and the end result is seriously addictive. Love the little pitched up "where the hell you from / whatcha doing right here?" like some little leprechaun up in my ears. Slick as fuck track.
The front end of this record is so overpowered that the second half of it kinda pales in comparison. In fairness, the second half is still pretty damn strong on its own, particularly "DOUGHBOY" and it may just be my bias that what comes first sticks with me more, since a lot of this record has much of the same general approach to songwriting ethos.
And okay, does the occasional bar make me cringe? Absolutely. Particularly any of the shit about cars, or the general materialism that I can't even fully embrace ironically. Sure, it's already prevalent in a lot of hip hop, but I find it even more grating coming from a couple of suburb kids.
That being said, I'm very much taking a record like this way too seriously in admitting that. As I stated earlier, Joey Valence and Brae clearly give no fucks, and the dudes just wanna make the kinda music that they woulda blasted in their early teens, and who am I to judge? This shit bangs.
No Hands has more personality than just about any other record released in 2024, and you'll probably laugh and shake your ass off to more than a few songs on here if you're not too high and mighty to embrace your inner child.
Highlights: "WHERE U FROM", "BUSSIT", "PACKAPUNCH", "NO HANDS", "DOUGHBOY"
8/10

The more things change...
...the more they stay the same.
I made this new blog and I made a whole post about how I believe that people can change, and that I would like to make changes in my life. The new year is a trite excuse but anything that gets you going is better than nothing, and now we're nearly a week into this new year.
And you know what? I already feel so much better.
This isn't a novel take but it annoys me how easy it actually is to improve things like mood and general feeling in life. Obviously this isn't 100% across the board for all people due to a myriad of reasons and factors, but for a lot of people simple things like diet and exercise (like, a moderate amount. I know the word "exercise" scares people off, but I'm talking in my case just playing 10 minutes of Beat Saber each morning to get my body moving here) will dramatically improve so many little factors of life.
And I know this about myself already. I've been here before, I've done it before, and so it scares me that it could all just fall off again.
And I know it's January, so the faster the wheels fall off the more hilariously mock worthy of a failure it is.
But maybe these notions are part of the self fulfilling prophecy. So we press on, because even if we fail a day, a week, a month, or a year from now - the immediate benefits are here and we are reaping them today.
But then you end up with things that, try as I might, remain the same old problems. I should be asleep right now, and while staying up past the time I should be asleep is not a new development - I actually tried today! I laid in bed with my eyes closed for over 40 minutes just waiting, hoping to drift off. But at a certain point you just have to know yourself. I knew it wasn't going to happen. So here I am. Sitting and making a Tumblr post to hopefully get all the words out of my head so that the only thing left in there is room for dreams.
I made myself a nice mug of "winter spice" tea, which is definitely some marketing bullshit and tastes faintly of some flavor, but feels nice nonetheless.
And maybe that's the early takeaway for 2025 is that we just have to keep doing things that feel nice nonetheless.
Play a little Beat Saber and get the body moving.
Drink a little tea and write a blog when you can't sleep.
Play another round of Balatro, why not.
And do your damn stretches in the morning and at night (oh yeah, as a nichely-famous nerdcore rapper once said to me at a convention: "I'm really getting into stretching lately").
So even though I have to work in seven hours I will tippy tap type away at my computer until I feel something inside me telling me that sleep is possible again.
And maybe I'll be a little extra tired tomorrow. But hopefully that means I'll get to sleep at a decent time.
The best I can do is try.

I think for the music, it's pure nostalgia. It certainly didn't influence my music tastes. That dove deep into the metal/alternative/nerdcore once I went to college. But the music is very similar to the music that my parents liked listening to at the time so it just adds to the nostalgia.
PMG V4 is similar, but I like having two shades of color for each hair. I like how most medieval games have so many varieties of hair colors but am not a fan of Pooklet hairs. The shine is just too much for me. I find that PMG V4, even if it is similar to Poppet, helps separate the two stories in a visual even if subtle way. Plus having two greys is super nice, I never really cared about that until the town started to age and it wasn't a sea of solid grey hair.
Technically, no? Kynsbern takes place deep in a forest filled with monsters and this particular creature and its companions were taken from the forest, so it is just a creature that naturally lurks near the town. If it shows up in ROS, that means I roll dice to see who sees the creature and if they follow it into the forest to their death. This town is very lucky I am holding back adding its friends. It doesn't need three happy birds hanging about, one is enough for now.
Oh, I kept a lot of stuff I have created over the years. If my computer hadn't have BSOD'd during the first two years of high school, I would still have the utterly angsty Sims 1 stories I made back in the late 2000's. I like seeing how my work has changed over the years, it helps me see how I have grown into a person. Someday I might dig it back up and scan the least ridiculous ones.
👽questions for sim 2 players👽
‼️THIS IS NOT A SURVEY OR QUESTIONNAIRE‼️ you can answer whichever questions you'd like in whichever way you'd like, and feel free to add on to your answers in any way you'd like - share as much or as little about your sims 2-ing as you want, i am keen to hear it all! 👂👀👂
📻audio📻
do you listen to music/streams/podcasts/tv/etc. while playing? if so, is it stuff you would also be listening to if you were doing something else, or do you listen to specific things while playing sims 2?
conversely, do you listen to the sims 2 soundtrack when you're not playing the sims 2?
📺visual📺
if you have little or no cc or other visual changes to your game, are there particular reasons? e.g. disk space/performance, nostalgia/just prefer the vanilla vibe, etc.
if you use a lot of 4t2 and/or 3t2 cc are there any particular reasons? e.g. you play the other game and also want the same stuff in the sims 2, you don't have the other game but want the other game's stuff that you've seen, you prefer the aesthetic of the other game but prefer the gameplay of the sims 2, you feel like eaxis content from the other games is part of the same "set" as the sims 2, you just prefer clay hair, etc.
if you use the vibrant, colourful, and lower contrast? aesthetic that's often called "maxis match", does it actually "match" the sims 2 in your view/experience of the game or do you consider it "maxis match" in the sense of the whole sims series? alternatively, do you not consider it "maxis match" and just prefer the colour and brightness? if so are there any particular reasons? e.g. it reminds you of a game or other media that you like, it gives you a feeling/vibe that you like, etc.
if you use cc that isn't the "maxis match" style mentioned above, but that you consider "maxis match", are there any particular traits that qualify/disqualify "maxis match" cc for you?
if you use "realistic" or "alpha" cc, would you consider your "aim" to be to make the sims 2 game more like real life, or to make a version of real life in the sims 2? alternatively, do you just like the aesthetic, are you used to using "alpha" cc in other sims games, or is "alpha" cc something that is nostalgic for you?
📖experience📖
do your real life experiences influence the way you alter and/or play the sims 2? e.g. adding or replacing stuff with cc that is more familiar to your location and/or culture, making sims, families, builds, or stories that are familiar to you, etc. alternatively, do you have a game that is removed from from your real life experiences? e.g. fantasy, non-human, historical, etc.
do you use the skills you use for sims 2 gameplay/content creation for work/school/other hobbies? e.g. image/video editing, 3D modelling, coding, making/using spreadsheets, writing, internet research, etc. if so, does that influence the way you use your skills? e.g. software, habits/best practices, decreased/increased motivation, etc.

I think that the coolest thing that I learned how to do last semester was reverse-engineer binary executables. Here, I am using radare2 to examine a "binary bomb,” which could be diffused by extracting the passcodes from its decompiled source code. This skill has already helped me understand the algorithms behind some of my favorite programs, and I hope to one day use it to examine malware and learn more about how computer viruses work.

Hell yeah! Had an awesome find at a thrift shop today - A 1929 Southwestern Bell Telephone technical manual and installation guide for phones of the era.

Maybe you're asking why I think this is awesome? Haha. That makes sense - Well, first of all, I -live- vintage stuff. Antiques, old books, weird ephemera of the past. This definitely fits in with all of that, and has a gorgeous, punched leather cover with the gold stamping. Such a slick piece of history.

Second, I'm an old computer nerd cat. Back in the early '90s, I was a phone phreak - a phone hacker back before mobile phones and even alphanumeric pagers were a thing. It was in these days that "Ma Bell" (Southwestern Bell) was a big Queen on the scene, in her prime.

What were common phreaker practices back in the day? Well, it was all about exploration and curiosity. We would wardial (using our home landline connections and modems to dial a huge list of numbers in a row to try and find systems on the other end rather than regular phones - I'd leave it on all day and come back with a shorter list of various systems to dial in and play around on), we would build blue (and other color) boxes from RadioShack parts to use payphones to make free calls and do all sorts of rad tricks, we would prank folks that deserved it or use said tricks to disrupt schools and business, we would navigate voicemail systems and change automatic messages, and we would generate credit card numbers (which was incredibly easy back in the day) to make free calls to our first girlfriends in Canada. Well, that last one was mostly a me thing, haha.

Basically, payphones and early phone systems were a wonderful, incredible playground for me and I have SO many fond memories of these times. To have a book like this in my hands feels like I just looked inside the Ark of the Covenant and instead of melting my face off, it just glowed real bright and whistled a 2600hz tone sweetly into my ears.

This has so many cool photos like the ones above, and lots of radical technical diagrams, too.
As a bonus, there are hand-typed notes from a division head telephone engineer that wrote about systems they were building in Galveston, TX in the '60s:

Anyways, this is such a cool relic and I'll probably not be able to bring myself to sell it.
Did you know I wrote a verse about being a phreaker for a song with Nerdcore legend YTCracker wayyyyyy back in 2010? Well, now you do. You can hear that here (I'm the second dude, of course):

WEBROOT
Just about every antivirus tool claims to be ‘lightweight’, but Webroot SecureAnywhere AntiVirus really delivers on this front. Installation takes seconds, and it only uses 15MB (yes, megabytes) of hard drive space – plus the app’s memory footprint is just as tiny, with virus definitions stored in the cloud. Considering this, there’s no compromise on features, which makes Webroot all the more impressive. SecureAnywhere AntiVirus gives you solid malware protection – although it isn’t ranked by the big-name testing labs – and extremely quick virus scans, along with a smart ‘firewall’ monitoring system, accurate real-time anti-phishing, identity theft protection and much more. Further up the Webroot range, SecureAnywhere Internet Security Plus expands coverage from Windows and Mac PCs to mobile devices, also providing a password manager (courtesy of LastPass) and covering up to five devices (rather than three). And at the top of the tree is Internet Security Complete which introduces an automatic backup tool (with 25GB of cloud storage) and additional online privacy features. SecureAnywhere AntiVirus gives you everything you need, really, although Internet Security Plus is the top pick for the most rounded package. Another boon worth bearing in mind here is Webroot’s confidence-instilling lengthy 70-day 100% money-back guarantee. Techradar.com No, this post is in no way sponsored by Webroot, even though it'd be cool to have a sponsor. Anyway. Read the full article
