Sarah Jacobs' Lines
Did you know that out of the Hard Promises script, the 1991 filming script, the junior novelization, and the film, Sarah Jacobs actually has the least lines in Hard Promises?
Her spoken lines expanded in the 1991 script and were then reduced in the final cut of the movie. Newsies: a novel boasts the most words spoken by Sarah.
I've collected all of Sarah's lines from all four versions of Newsies mentioned above, here are all of them! (Lyrics are indicated by boxes.)
Hard Promises
Total spoken words: 127 Words NOT spoken to Jack: 8 Solo: What Will Become of The Boy? Quotes: "My father and I are Socialists." "I love the quiet, this time of morning. The city can be so oppressive sometimes... so ugly." ---
1991 Script
Total spoken words: 269 Words NOT spoken to Jack: 74 Solo sung words: 12 Duet sung words: 51 Quotes: "You're not going to run away. They'll just come after you. You have to fight them." "You're wrong. You touched people you don't even know about." ---
Newsies: a Novel
Total spoken words: 369 Words NOT spoken to Jack: 105 Quotes: “You don’t have to get arrested to be a loyal friend.” “You can’t go. It will leave everything unsettled. For the rest of your life you’ll be calling yourself a quitter and a coward. And you’re not, Jack. What you do means so much to people…”
The novel also provides the following passages that offer something of Sarah's inner monologue/POV:
---
Newsies (1992)
Total spoken words: 161 Words NOT spoken to Jack: 85 Solo sung words: 5 Quotes: "It's the same sun as here." "Think about seizing the day!"

you’re a Newsies fan? *squeals excitedly in musical*
who’s your favorite character? how did you get introduced to the musical? What’s your favorite movie/recorded version of the show? Have you ever seen a production of it live?
OH MY GOD IM A HUGE NEWSIES FAN !!! i have a little section of my bedroom wall dedicated to it because it means SO much to me <3
(answers under the cut because i just started talking and idk if people want to read all of it)
i know in my heart and soul that i must say jack kelly because he is so dear to me. i have a t-shirt from a t-shirtsies project of him that i've had to retire because it was getting too worn from me wearing it so much (it used to be my go-to doctor's appointment t-shirt). i think that i'm most similar to davey though :) and my favorite ensemble member is finch !! (i LOVE iain young's version omg) or crutchie because he is amazing disability rep and someone i've really enjoyed thinking about recently
i've been a part of theater since i was around 7? and consistently performing since i was 14 so i just kind of naturally found it from being in the space and wanting to find new musicals. i remember first listening to the soundtrack while cleaning my room and then making my parents watch it with me the next night and i pretty much immediately loved it. everyone in the theater department knows me as the "newsies guy" and there are a couple that call me jack kelly as a joke 😭 if anyone mentions newsies ever they all go "where's theo" and immediately tell me what was said which i think is my greatest achievement <3
i wish i could say uksies but there are only bootlegs :( i'd probably have to go with the 2017 broadway pro-shot because it is truly so incredible (the original trio !!!) and the additional songs are ones that i could not do without. but believe me i enjoy 1992sies so so much and i listen to both soundtracks fairly regularly (i generally prefer '12 "santa fe" but there is something so devastating about '92 "santa fe" that i adore. and honestly when it comes down to it they're almost completely different songs so i find it hard to compare them)
I HAVE !! in dec 2022 i got to see it in the uk when it went to wembley and i have the newspaper that was thrown at me during seize the day on my wall with the tickets and playbill :3 i actually ran into michael ahomka-lindsay as he was walking out of a coffee shop so i got to meet him outside of stage door (he's so sweet oh my god) which i think about all the time. whenever i'm particularly sad i like to go back and watch the videos from meeting the cast at stage door - they were all so wonderful and very genuine :')
#ALSO i am such a believer in the presence of michael kelly throughout all iterations of jack (1991 hard promises script ily)#and when i was 14 i wrote an essay about how the different santa fe's completely change jack's character and honestly. i think it was#very very real of me. i had many many thoughts clearly#but yeah <3 i would LOVE to hear all your thoughts on it if you want to share <33#pitter patter#💌#edit: last summer i dressed up as crutchie for the camp i was working at's little halloween thing & two (?) summers ago#i took newsies inspired self-portraits that are still some of my fav photos of me to this day

EEEEEEEEE okay:
so we have two previous Newsies scripts, the first is from when the project was being adapted from the original pitch known as Hard Promises (written by Bob Tzudiker and Noni White) into a Disney movie musical after Disney had agreed to produce the film (guess what! Newsies was originally penned as a historical drama, not a musical)
Here's the link for that one-
https://docs.google.com/document/d/e/2PACX-1vQdBr4e1Aid9WL4kQ8DYaZdZIoyzn1lI4tNScDcFQa1_elx56qZarrH4bV5gRdiHKC16-AP40j9niUI/pub
And the second one is the script further into production from 1991 and features cut lyrics from Carrying the Banner and a cut song called The Point of No Return
Here's that link-
https://www.dailyscript.com/scripts/Newsies.PDF
anon my love i am about to DEVOUR these tysm
also, i know the film made approximately zero dollars as it stood but dear god can you imagine newsies as a historical drama!? like no music??? no dancing??? no flying high kicks???? could never be for me. i live for these little twirls baby!!!!

Day two - Jack Kelly
Ouija Board
"Sure, sure, Jackie Boy like to act like he's all peaches and cream, but he sure like's to cause trouble!" Mooney waved his hands around, using them to punctuate his words. It was obvious that he didn't have a very good impression of the Manhattan leader.
"Once, he convinced Spot he could communicate with his ma through a witch board. Augh! Hated that. Ol' Jackie is always up to somethin'." Mooney wrinkled his nose and made a face at the memory. He liked Jack Kelly’s dedication to the bit, but when it came to being serious, Mooney thought he was a bit of a flake. His main reason for his thoughts about Jack was the strike. Unfortunately he didn’t know the full story, being in the refuge for most of the strike.
(OOC Headcanons and Discord link under cut)
Headcanons-
Jack is bisexual and uses He/him pronouns. He's 17 years old.
He loves Les like a younger brother. Jack's own younger brother, Michael from the 1991 script, was killed. He sees Michael in Les.
The blurb from Character Mooney was based off of this interview with AKB. One of the antics pulled back stage was convincing Tommy, who was whining about never getting any fanmail, he had a stalker-fan sending pictures of themself to Tommy. Apparently it was easy to convince him because he's so gullible.
Normally I like to base my Jack Kelly off of Corey Cott, but this drawing is based off of Jeremy Jordan. I also like drawing him with a cowboy hat to keep the og cowboy vibes from the 1992 movie.
The “Jack Kelley” card is how I see Jack! Personally I’d like to believe there’s an extra ‘e’ in Jack’s last name. I gave him Corey’s eyes, freckles, and hair, with a cowboy hat and some snark. I made his tongue sticking out slightly because I felt like that fit his personality more than the sneer or whatever Jeremy is doing in the og trading card.
If you'd like to hang out with some cool people from the Newsies fandom, we have a discord! It's run by me and @flintt! We are a little quiet, but most people usually say hi and hang out for a bit.

y'all I have a whole post about this 😭
In a nut shell, Hard Promises explicitly describes the Jacobs as Jewish, as does the novelization of the 1992 film.
furthermore, David Moscow himself all but confirmed it and the Jacobs being Jewish also lines up historically with immigration trends and Polish-Jewish history in particular (the Jacobses are confirmed Polish in Hard Promises and the 1991 script).
If anyone still needs convincing or exclusively consumes the musical version of Newsies, David's stage musical character description describes him as "a nice Jewish boy" and he has a Jewish tag on his character breakdown.
jewish david jacobs erasure makes me sooo mad. was just reading a fic where they portrayed him as a christian celebrating christmas and i just closed it because … that damned boy is jewish. idc.
and the fic was good too, but that sort of thing just saps my enjoyment entirely.
another thing: it is actually canon that the boy is jewish. ik it isn’t obvious in the more popular forms of media but it is in fact canon in the original hard promises script. so. so why would you write him christian??? I don’t understand <3
respect jewish characters challenge impossible mode😍
#jewish david jacobs#jewish jacobs family#they. are. jews.#what is so hard to understand about that#stop writing jewish characters as christian challenge#<- prev#I am so tired#david jacobs#the jacobs family

Agents Of SHIELD S7E01 “The New Deal” Easter Eggs And References
In the season seven premiere, most of the team ends up in 1931 New York thanks to some time travel shenanigans. We love shenanigans, right? The is the last season premiere ever, and it’s bittersweet, but I’m diving right in.
As always, if you don’t remember this from the last few seasons of me writing up Easter eggs (posts are tagged aos easter eggs if you want to read old ones), this list assumes you have seen the episode. There will be spoilers.
.
.
.
Again, spoilers. Turn back now if you don’t want them. Okay? Good.
.
.
.
The Episode Title.
It’s a reference to FDR’s political work. I mean, Coulson even references it and says the episode title in the show. I kind of love when show’s do that? This show didn’t used to, but they did it a lot more the last two seasons, so maybe it’s a thing now.
The Title Card.
I feel like it’s unfair to call this an Easter egg, but if they didn’t put a 1931 timestamp on the top of the episode, the title card could have told you what era the team was in. Whoever was in charge of designing it did a great job making it look like a classic film title card.
Faceless People.
Okay, so the chronocoms erase the faces of the people they wish to resemble. This isn’t really a thing in the comics, but there is a character called “Faceless One.” He happens to be an alien who wants to conquer Earth as well, but is basically a big yellow ball with legs, so I doubt there’s any connection other than the cool effect.
Coulson’s Data Flood.
Okay, we get that literally everything Coulson says when he’s not talking to Daisy, Mack, and Jemma are quotes from previous seasons, right? Good. He even downloads the information on Ghost Rider, his own death, last season, etc.
Deke Has A Workstation.
Okay, not an Easter egg, but I think we need to take a moment and appreciate that Jemma built Deke a workstation and Fitz left him the tool we saw way back in season five. Why? Because Deke never feels like he belongs and he wants so badly to be close to his family, and now, we see that they thought of him while upgrading their ship. He has a place. And it’s right next to Jemma.
Elena Is Quarantined.
That’s because she was infected by the shrike in season six, not because the writers are psychic and knew there would be a massive epidemic going on when the show premiered. (Sorry, typed that before I realized Jemma was going to actually say it in show, so it’s staying in.)
Gemini And Koenig.
Gemini is actually a pretty popular name/codename in Marvel Comics, so it being used as, supposedly, the code name for the person in charge of the speakeasy made me laugh. It’s much more likely here that the bartender didn’t react wrong to the use of the word, that it’s used to weed out pretenders, hence the double barrel shotgun he affectionately calls the twins. I also like that it’s a tease for a Koenig appearing since we initially thought the Koenig siblings were twins and it turns out there are too many for us to count at this point (not really, I’m exaggerating, but great that grandpa or great-grandpa Koenig looks exactly like the modern day Koenigs. I mean, come on, they’re clones or something, right?).
“It’s not exactly your first time being separated by space and time.”
Okay, look, if you have to keep inserting meta humor into a show about how often you separate your main couple, maybe you should stop separating your main couple. (Yes, I know, Iain de Caestecker had another job he was working on in seasons six and seven, but seriously, it’s not funny. Your audience is tired of it.) I mean, to be frank, Fitz is one of my favorite characters in the show, but I didn’t really miss him in this episode? That might sound bad, but I don’t think they needed to comment on him being gone so much considering Jemma told them at the end of season six she didn’t - and couldn’t - know where he was.
Wilfred “Freddie” Malick.
Daisy explains who he is, but look, it’s the father of Gideon Malick, the same Gideon who became the leader of Hydra after a broken SHIELD (and the Avengers) decided to squash all of its heads, the same guy who got Ward interested in visiting an alien planet where he ended up as Hive. He’s, like, ancient school Hydra, not just old school Hydra. What doesn’t make sense here is that they’re saying the SSR forms in response to Hydra. Technically, the SSR forms, and then they learn about Hydra, unless I’m misremembering, which is totally possible.
The Substance.
So, I gotta wonder… what’s in the test tubes? The earliest we go in the MCU is Captain America, which is still a whole decade after the events of this episode. Prior to that, Hydra experimentation did create the Red Skull, but… still not sure what’s in the tubes. I don’t really have a frame of reference from the comics to speculate either since Hydra was into literally anything and everything.
New York.
Okay, so I’m curious if anyone knows where they filmed their 1931 New York scenes. I have questions. Because they use the same couple of blocks for all their outside scenes, which makes me think it’s a studio backlot (which would definitely help keep the script quiet) and they’re going to use a different part of the lot next week. A friend asked me if I thought it was the same as the one used for Captain America when he’s in Brooklyn in his first movie. Cap’s first movie’s Brooklyn scenes were filmed on a Universal Studios lot where they had New York building facades and street signs. If you’ve been to the theme park, you basically know what it looks like without the 30s/40s dressing. I think it’s the same lot, and I say this because I actually kept thinking that they used the set pieces Disney used for The Newsies movie in 1992 while watching the episode. Do you know where that was filmed? On the Universal Studios backlot’s New York street set up right after it was renovated in 1991. Huh.
So, Mark Kolpack basically answered this on twitter when discussing VFX. They filmed their New York street scenes on the Warner Bros. backlot, not the Universal one, so I guess the people in charge of designing the set pieces did a great job because they look pretty much the same.
This Picture.
This boxing poster was shared by Jed Whedon on instagram. Honestly, I didn’t spot it in the episode, but that could just be because I have a small television screen and I can’t read the signs unless I pause on a computer and zoom. I have bad eyes, guys. Sorry. Usually signage is something I spot on a second or third watch, but according to Whedon, this is set dressing in the episode somewhere. Probably on the street the characters walk down multiple times.
Let’s break down the names. Kitson is George Kitson, a story editor, writer, and production assistant on the show. He wrote this episode, and, actually, next week’s episode. The planet Kitson was also named for him. Titley is Craig Titley. He’s a producer and writer for the show, probably best known for writing “4,722 Hours” at this point. Brown is such a common name, but I’m going to guess it’s for Garry Brown who has directed a handful of episodes and is also a producer on the show. Bell is, I’m thinking, Jeffrey Bell, one of the producers and writers on the show. Tancharoen is for Maurissa Tancharoen, one of the showrunners, or you know, maybe her brother, who has directed several episodes (including this one!), or her father, who is in charge of transportation to sets. Gierhart is, I’m assuming, Billy Gierhart, who has directed a lot of episodes of the show, though I don’t think he’s directed any since 2017. (If you look at the matchups, it ends up being writer vs writer, producer vs producer, director vs director when you assume the Tancharoen is Kevin.) It says there are four main events though, and only three are listed?
Not sure if the October 15 date is intentional, but if it is, that’s the day “Eye Spy” aired in season one? Steve Roger’s mother dies on October 15, but in 1936. Not sure if that’s even canon since it’s in a promotional comic, not in anything on screen.
I’m sure there are more, and if you guys spot them and tell me, I’ll add them in. If I notice any on a rewatch, I’ll add them in as well. Who’s looking forward to the time traveling this season?

okay, allow me to plug in some history first
The real strike leaders of the 1899 Newsboys' strike, Kid Blink and Dave Simmons, were accused of accepting a bribe and betraying the strike on July 26th. However, both boys denied the charges. Dave Simmons went so far as to say that "a published report that he and Kid Blink had been deposed as leaders of the strike for going over to the enemy was a device of that enemy, and that the report was not true."
Source: “Parade To-Night, Sure.” The Sun [New York], 27 July 1899, p. 3.
Given that every paper which reported on the bribe seems to be in conflict with each other on the details, and given that the accusations came at the height of the strike and its support by the public, it is likely that Dave Simmons was telling the truth.
Three days before the accusations was the rally at Irving Hall. Two days before, the newsies had switched to peaceful means of protest. The day before he supposedly accepted a bribe, Kid Blink is quoted as saying "[William Randolph Hearst] says he’ll go out of business and close up the shop before he’ll give in to us. I guess that’s what he’ll have to do." Does that sound like a boy who'd turn around and betray the strike the very next day?
Source: “Newsies’ Standing Fast.” New-York Daily Tribune, 26 July 1899, p. 2.
Going back to the issue of conflicting details, the Tribune reported that each boy was given a $400 bribe. The Sun claimed the offer was a dollar a day along with free papers. The Herald says that Kid Blink and Dave Simmons were given $200 and a new suit of clothes.
As a quick aside, a $400 or $200 bribe seems rather like improving the truth to me, seeing as in today's money that would be equivalent of about $15,000 or $8,000.
Regardless of whether any of the reported claims are true, the original bribe that Pulitzer offers Jack in Newsies (based off of the earliest available script) seems to have taken the Herald at its word:
Newsies "Hard Promises" script.
In this same script, Jack is given a new suit as promised but only $50 (about $2,000). Weasel claims that Jack will get the rest of the bribe money when the strike has ended.
Newsies "Hard Promises" script.
Unlike in the final film, there is no forgotten printing press in Pulitzer's basement. Instead, Jack uses the bribe money to fund the printing of flyers at a print shop. Later, as he's leaving Pulitzer's office, Jack returns the bribe money before taking some of it off the top for "expenses."
Newsies "Hard Promises" script.
But of course, the script changed and evolved between Hard Promises and the final film. The 1991 filming script is quite different. For one, the amount of money that Pulitzer offers to Jack is never specified.
Newsies 1991 filming script, p. 99 & 100.
What's interesting is that, while Jack definitely gets a new suit out of the deal, it is never specified whether Jack actually receives any bribe money. Jack's line in the final film, "For the first time in my life I've got money in my pockets - real money!" is no where to be found whereas he did have a similar line "I got fifty dollars in my pocket and more on the way" in the earlier Hard Promises script.
After returning to the strike, Jack also says he's planning to hop a train for free. If he had received money from Pulitzer, wouldn't he be buying a ticket?
Newsies 1991 filming script, p. 113.
Also missing from the 1991 script is any mention of Jack returning any alleged bribe money. However, in this version of the story, as in the final film, there is a printing press in Pulitzer's basement that is used to print the Newsies Banner. Jack reveals this fact to Pulitzer in Pulitzer's office right before Pulitzer concedes to listen to the newsies' demands and the scene changes. This is only slightly different from the final film where the scene cuts away on Pulitzer's shocked face.
Newsies 1991 filming script, p. 130.
The novelization isn't too dissimilar from the 1991 script on the aforementioned points. The amount of money Pulitzer offers Jack isn't specified, Jack shows up in a new suit but never confirms that he received money, plans to go off on a train for free, and doesn't return any money to Pulitzer in his office. Pulitzer's own press is once again used to print the "Newsie News" (aka the Newsies Banner) and Jack is the one to tell Pulitzer - there's just a slight difference as in the novel Jack tells him shortly after arriving in Pulitzer's office and delivering a copy of their paper.
Newsies: a novel, p. 130 (PDF p. 144).
In the 1992 film, Jack does receive an unspecified amount of bribe money but as far as the film provides he neither spends it nor does he return it to Pulitzer. And he doesn't need to return it. Here's why:
The reason why Jack returned the bribe money in Hard Promises is because in that version of the story the bribe money is used to undermine Pulitzer. Pulitzer tries to pay Jack for his silence and submission, but Jack turns around and uses that money to fund the flyers that turn the strike. Because stories and scripts evolve, this act of rebellion turned into Jack using Pulitzer's own press to print the Newsies Banner. Both are a climatic moment that shows Pulitzer he has unwittingly aided the newsies in their victory.
True, we don't get the full conversation in Pulitzer's office, so maybe before he left Jack returned the bribe money as he did in the early script. But it's no longer necessary that he does, which is why we don't see it in the film - it's up to interpretation. Maybe Jack gave the money to the Jacobs family to help them get back on their feet, who's to say?
What's more important is that Jack got his moment to defy Pulitzer.
"Well, we only use the best, Joe. So I just wanna say... thanks again."
wait does jack (92sies) actually give pulitzer’s money back or does he keep it

Character Profile: Davey (Musical and Film Version)
Real Name: David Jacobs
Nickname and Meaning: Davey (diminutive of David), Walking Mouth (given to him by Spot for talking so much)
Age: In the film script, Davey is stated to be 15, and his brother 8. (Newsies Film script, page 6) However, in the stage musical, Les says that he is “ten, almost”, (Newsies Live script, page 11) so Davey could be as old as 17.
Gender: Davey is always played by a man.
Family: Esther and Mayer Jacobs (parents), Sarah (sister) and Les (brother)
Davey…:
Is book smart. Not only is he the first one to suggest a strike, he knows everything the newsies would need to make it official and successful. (Newsies Live script, pages 25, 26, 27, 32) He has an extensive vocabulary (often causing his points to go right over the newsies’ heads), (Newsies Live script, pages 27, 32) (Newsies Film script, page 46) and is an eloquent public speaker. (Newsies Live script, pages 27, 28, 53, 54, 55, 63) His solo in Seize the Day is essentially a persuasive speech, telling the newsies not to quit- and one that works very well. (Newsies Live script, pages 40, 41, 42, 43)
Is street stupid. Davey comes to the circulation gate not knowing anything about buying papers, (Newsies Live script, page 10) and when he tries to sell, not only does he lack charisma, he seems to have never heard a newsie hawk a headline in his entire life. (Newsies Live script, page 16) He also has no idea who Warden Snyder is, despite probably being in the poorest family he knows (until he meets the newsies, of course). (Newsies Live script, page 17)
Says what he thinks. When Jack spit shakes with Les, Davey tells him flat out “that’s disgusting”, (Newsies Live script, page 12) tells Katherine she’s not a “real reporter” before he even knows her, (Newsies Live script, page 34) and says “that’s it?” when Kath starts dancing during King of New York (Newsies Live script, page 50) - certainly not the best first impression a guy could make. He isn’t mean, though- he also readily complements Jack on his art (Newsies Live script, page 19) and lets him know how much he cares about him. (Newsies Live script, page 69)
Doesn’t understand social cues very well. When Jack is having his personal moping session after Crutchie’s arrest, Davey completely misreads the room. He talks about himself, and how worried he was about Jack (Newsies Live script, page 53) and then acts like nothing is wrong, and Jack ought to be happy the strike is going so well. (Newsies Live script, page 53, 54) He even tells Jack “Lighten up, no one died”, even though Crutchie very well could. (Newsies Live script, page 55) He also continues to mention his parents around the newsies, despite seeing how uncomfortable it makes them, (Newsies Live script, pages 16, 17, 23, 53) and tries to sell papers to a couple while they were making out. (Newsies Film script, page 21)
Is very protective of his brother. He mostly shows this by keeping him in line and out of trouble, like keeping him away from people who could hurt him (Newsies Live script, page 42) (Newsies Film script, page 30) and not letting him gawk at the Bowery Beauties. (Newsies Live script, page 18) He also looks after Les’s future, reminding him that they’re going back to school as soon as their father can work again. (Newsies Live script, page 16)
Has a strong sense of ethics, which includes:
Honesty. Davey objects strongly to Jack’s “improving the truth a little”. (Newsies Film script, page 23) His dishonestly clearly marks him as a bad seed in Davey’s book, as when he says he was put in jail for stealing food, he becomes “suspicious”. (Newsies Film script, page 26) Though he learns to trust Jack over time, he brings up the lying again when Jack scabs, saying “You lie about everything headlines, your family -- because nobody counts but you -- nobody or nothing!” (Newsies Film script, page 105) Him bringing up honesty at such an emotional time shows how much it means to him.
Justice. Davey is very enthusiastic about the strike. He talks grandly about all the good striking will do- getting the newsies more rights, teaching adults they can’t exploit kids and get away with it, and helping other poor people. (Newsies Live script, pages 27, 63) He also preaches the importance of supporting other poor people to Medda when he’s trying to get the theater for the rally. (Newsies Film script, page 71)
Nonviolence. Davey strongly objects to beating up the scabbing newsies throughout the play, (Newsies Live script, pages 28, 41) (Newsies Film script, page 43, 80, 104) and is clearly disturbed by the violence of the police to the newsies (Newsies Film script, page 92) and the trolley strikers to each other. (Newsies Film script, page 30) The only time in either show Davey resorts to physical violence is when the Delancey brothers threaten his sister. (Newsies Film script, page 111)
Loyalty. Once Davey has committed to the strike, he really commits. He sticks by the newsies when they don’t (Newsies Live script, pages 40, 41, 42, 43), even going so far as to find their leader and bring him back when he tries to quit. (Newsies Live script, page 53)
Isn’t very social. When Jack buys him papers and offers to sell with him, Davey rejects him off the bat. (Newsies Film script, page 18) Even when he accepts the deal, Davey only does it “reluctantly”, (Newsies Film script, page 19) and he’s suspicious of Denton at first. (Newsies Film script, page 48) Also, he doesn’t appear to have any friends besides his sister, as he often talks to her about Jack. (Newsies Film script, page 75) However, he becomes more comfortable with them after they prove themselves trustworthy.
Is a nervous person. His dialogue is peppered with filler words (Newsies Live script, pages 17, 26, 27) (Newsies Film script, page 52) and dashes, (Newsies Live script, pages 40, 56) (Newsies Film script, page 51, 62, 101, 105, 123) showing that he isn’t confident in his ability to speak. He also asks the newsies to “leave him out” of the strike because he thinks it’s too risky, (Newsies Live script, page 25) and refuses to go to Brooklyn without Jack to protect him, (Newsies Live script, page 33) and starts “sweating, aware that all eyes are on him” while arguing with Wiesel about his papers. (Newsies Film script, page 17) This could be caused by him being the least favorite child in his family. (Highlights of the 1991 Script)
Is brave. Despite his anxiety, Davey doesn’t hesitate to stick up for himself or others. When Wiesel tries to cheat him out of a paper, Davey calls his mistake and doesn’t back down until he gets what he wants. (Newsies Live script, page 11) During the strike, he stands up for the cause the most and doesn’t back down when things get scary. His courage inspires the other newsies to stick with it. (Newsies Live script, pages 40, 41, 42, 43)
Could be on the autism spectrum. Davey shows a lot of autistic traits, such as not understanding social cues and having difficulty approaching strangers. His large amounts of knowledge on striking and unions could also be because they’re his special interest.
Headcanon Fuel:
Why is Davey neither of his parents’ favorite child?
Why does Davey value honesty, justice, loyalty and nonviolence so much?
Why did Davey become a newsie (rather than picking some other job)?
Why doesn’t Davey want to be friends with the newsies at first?
Actors and Physical Appearance:
David Moscow

Ben Fankhauser

Jacob Kemp

Stephen Michael Langton

Davey is tall and scrawny, with dark curly hair and a prominent nose. He dresses to impress. Davey and his family are canonically Jewish and at least half Polish, as was made clear in a previous version of the script. (Highlights of the 1991 Script)

im so sorry to mess this up for everyone.
but in a 1991 script, during the court scene BOTH the newsies and davey were shocked.
source:

link to the script:
one of my favorite things in this movie is how they attempt at giving jack the nickname "cowboy" but it only lasts for like the first 5 minutes of the film because NO ONE calls him that the rest of the film they all call him jack like they just forgot that he has a nickname too it kills me every time
