SO excited to share this fic for @goldenbcnes - it was an absolute blast to write.

Summary:

Eddie returns from El Paso and asks Buck on a date. In the interim between the asking and the date itself, Buck acts completely normally. Definitely. Just don't ask anyone.

Snippet:

“Uh, Buck?” Eddie asks.

Oh. Buck has been staring at him for close to a minute. 

“Hi,” Buck blurts. “Yes. That’s me.”

“No, I know that’s you,” Eddie frowns. “Uh… Thoughts on-”

“On a date? On a date with you? Eddie?”

Eddie looks mildly concerned.

“Yep. Me, Eddie.”

“Yes,” Buck nods. It’s probably an exaggerated nod. His head feels like it’s moving too much. “Yes, I would like that.”

“And you’re not agreeing under the influence of, like, hard prescription drugs?” Eddie asks. 

“Do I seem drugged?” Buck asks.

“Little bit,” Eddie admits. 

“Nope. No drugs here. You can test my pee,” Buck stammers.

As if answering his thoughts, Buck saw movement from the corner of his eyes. Leaning against the doorway was the figure of man he could hardly forget, and even with those shades he could feel that heavy gaze on him. “What are you doing here?” he squawked, mouth gaping at the unexpected visitor. Said visitor merely took off his aviators and walked in, brandishing his badge in one motion — face carefully neutral as he introduced himself to the room, “FBI, Special Agent Edmundo Diaz. Major Crime, Los Angeles.” He tipped his head in Buck’s direction. “Dr. Buckley here identifies remains for us.” Nonplussed, Buck amended. “I do more than just identify by the way.” “He also does podcasts.” Without missing a beat, a smartphone was brought out from that form-fitting suit coat he was wearing. Buck could only stare as the agent proceeded to carelessly toss the device over and across the table, somehow managing to land the thing safely in the other officer’s hands in a perfect arc. “That one’s pretty popular among the kids and college students. ‘Voices from the Vertebrae’, don’t know if you’ve heard of it.” Fully offended, Buck scrunched his nose. “Rude.” ...

They didn’t touch in public, not even on their hikes up the countless trails that were never short of people minding their own business as they took in the good weather. They sat on opposite sides of the table at dinner. Evan came over to his place instead of taking the risk with his roommates. Evan had even come up with a cover story if they ever ran into anyone: he was picking Tommy’s brain about the job. Nothing more. Nothing less.

Summary:

Seven years in the future, an adult Christopher has a chance to see his grandparents - and subsequently, his father - in a new light, on a family trip to El Paso.

Snippet:

A few weeks before they’re set to fly to El Paso, he catches his dad searching for hotels. 

“You don’t need a hotel,” Chris tells him.

“Well, I’ve already left it to the last minute,” Dad replies. 

“No,” Chris says. “Grandma and Grandpa already said we can all stay with them.”

Dad snorts. “Well, that’s not happening.”

“Why not?” Chris asks.

“The six of us under one roof is a bad idea,” Dad explains.

“Well, I want to stay with them,” Chris says. He hopes this will sway Dad.

“You’re more than welcome to, bud. Your brother, Buck, and I will be at the Marriott.” 

Chris frowns. “Really, Dad?”
