My name is Tee, I'm 23 and I have been trying to shift since January 2023. My journey started after my having an existential crisis, regressing to my childhood self by reobsessing over Harry Potter and subsequently googling if it was possible to go to Hogwarts 😭 ✨

I have not successfully shifted yet but I have lucid dreamt about attempting to shift which made me feel so much more secure in my journey! I subscribe to the consciousness theory and my current methods involve alternating between wbtb lucid dreaming and the wim hof pink breath method followed by alunir's 5 senses meditation. Edit: currently having a crack at the gateway tapes and trying to master focus 10. Edit of the edit: got diagnosed with ADHD which recontexualised my struggles with staying still for a prescribed amount of time. Am now trying methods that have no definitive length of time ie: mantras until i get bored. Serving me well so far.

I'm here mostly to feel less alone in my shifting journey, organise my thoughts and share the details of my dr to inspire others <3 Happy to be mutuals with anybody 18+

I am personally very uninterested in the ideal life style shifting (can't sweat, face claim, everybody is in love with you, infinite wardrobe etc.) and I am also not interested in shifting for romance (although I have become very attached to one of my OCs...) Super curious about whether there are other people in this space who feel a bit alienated by these shifting archetypes and are perhaps using their drs as exposure therapy ie learning to cope with difficult situations? Preface: Characters covered vary and I may not be entirely accurate as I have not consumed as much Wodehouse as I'd like. Polite discussion entirely welcome (and, in fact, desired)!

Jeeves would do well fact-wise but, owing to the fact that he does not watch the show and thus does not understand the format, would, on attempting to make a joke, be klaxoned to hell and back (possibly via goading by Alan). Unless he very carefully managed to dodge the goading he would not win and would be very bitter about it

The Elves would absolutely adore him btw. There'd be a behind the scenes photo of him looking puzzled/slightly scared while the Elves who are there on filming days all pose around him and grin at the camera

Would never forget to use his buzzer (regardless of how embarrassing it is) because he feels bad about interrupting. Would be very much unnerved by Stephen (obviously) and perhaps a little intimidated by how flamboyant he is. Aisling Bea would like him I think

Wooster would have no idea what was going on but would be endearing enough to make up for it entirely. Sort of like Johnny Vegas. He would have to be stopped forcibly from going on long rambling anecdotes a la Gyles Brandreth. If the host is Stephen he will not be paying any attention to anything being said the entire evening. Might win entirely by accident because he's saying nothing remotely relevant & thus is never klaxoned. (Though tbh he might have a heart attack before even starting the show on account of seeing a man who appears pretty much to be Jeeves wearing colour!)

Would get along well with Bill Bailey I think—agents of chaos the both of them. Alan would make fun of Wooster for being posh (a la the way the panel usually makes fun of Stephen). Would do very well on live demos. Stephry would adore him & he would not know what to do with it ("why is campier Jeeves so enamoured of me?"). Sandi would LOVE him. Might bring a blue whale plushie along for emotional support

Ukridge (and here my Wodehouse knowledge starts to thin) would very confidently be very incorrect but would be so charismatic about it that the Elves would forget to klaxon him until he was done speaking. Almost Rhod Gilbert-y levels of accidentally-on-purpose annoying (see: Rhod claiming that it gets totally dark at night in Denmark for like 5 minutes). Gyles Brandreth-levels of ability to talk at length. He starts spontaneously filibustering in the middle of the episode

Jeeves wins. Obviously. He would be guest team captain I think, and he would absolutely carry. Jon would be awkward the whole episode because he's being outperformed by this weird posh guy. The jokes about Jimmy being weird and non-expressive and android-like would be redirected at Jeeves and he would just kind of stare blankly at them

His mascot would be something very simple or something very strange/non-humorous (like. Not even a lucky fancy pen, just a fancy pen that writes well that he can use for the working-out). He'd get the conundrum immediately

If Joe Wilkinson was on to do A Bit you'd be able to see him looking confused in the background the entire time

Wooster is hopeless. Maybe if he's on a team with Jon or Jeeves he'd be able to scrape some points but, realistically, he's drawing on his paper the whole time. He takes to the mascot-ing with abject glee & does very well with that. Panel is not sure whether to make fun of Jimmy or Wooster for being posh. Russell Howard would like him

Would be delighted by a Joe cameo. Would be very polite when requesting his letters and/or numbers. Would delight Susie Dent

Ukridge is in Dictionary Corner fucking shit up. If he knows how to work PowerPoint then he's got a PowerPoint to back up his little bit of standup; if not he's got hand-drawn posters. Nobody is quite sure what he's talking about. There's something about ungulates in there. Possibly a mention of cellular respiration. He spends the whole episode asking Jimmy for money. He gets on with Joe.

Corky, for reasons* that go entirely unexplained sits quietly next to Ukridge in Dictionary Corner for the whole episode. He is not mentioned by name once. People in the YouTube comments are asking who the weird silent guy is & if anyone else can see him & if it's some avant-garde Bit that they're doing. Someone says they wish that they'd've tried this Bit out with Jimmy

Jeeves is not asked onto the show because he would start doing actual fully-fledged political commentary and being so good at it that nobody would feel comfortable interrupting him

Ukridge would have either Egg Scramble (i.e. Ed Gamble) or Milton Jones vibes for reasons I cannot explain. Would get distracted by the flies & start trying to catch them in his hands

Corky is too soft-spoken to get a word in edgewise

Would I Lie To You?

Jeeves has an excellent poker face & ability to distinguish truths from lies, rendering him excellent at parlour games. Unfortunately he does not understand what there is to be enjoyed in them & as such is only invited on for one episode. He does get into a good little argument with David about something horribly pedantic, though. Also Rob makes fun of him by doing his O.O face into camera and Jeeves entirely misses it

Wooster is great at telling stories but horrible at lying. Everyone loves having him on because he tells a captivating story but it's so so easy to tell when he's lying. Might team up with Lee to annoy David. Rob really likes him. Starts spinning on his chair when they're doing pick-ups, distracting everyone

Ukridge is pretty good at playing. His comedic rant abilities rival David's, except he's not actually really trying to be comedic. All his stories end up being about Schemes & he writes them down during the episode planning to try them. People think this is a bit. It is not.

Only Connect

Jeeves is far too literally-minded for the connecting board but he does remarkably well on the rest of it. Victoria pokes fun at him the entire episode for being posh. He does not notice

Wooster's mind works in such mysterious circuitous ways that he's actually rather good at the connecting board. Unfortunately he is bollocks at the rest of it

Big Fat Quiz

Jeeves does not do very well. Too much pop culture for him

Wooster also does not do very well. His mind is like a sieve except the sieve has very big holes. Or maybe even no holes tbh. So basically his mind is like a sieve if you took the mesh out and all you have left is the metal loop around the top. Essentially he remembers nothing about anything. He brings homemade* sandwiches for the snacking segment. He is goofy & delightful enough that he does quite well be he is not invited back on account of performing so terribly. He does wear a spiffing outfit for the occasion though

Ukridge does surprisingly well. He does start talking about his schemes though. He tries to get Jimmy in on them. He does not succeed

Corky is apparently the only chap who reads the newspapers. He does quite well!

Reggie Pepper also reads the newspapers but he is too busy being inexplicably hot while phoning people from bed so he only gets the barebones of most stories

Taskmaster

(I don't know if this really counts as a panel show, but what the hell.)

Jeeves takes everything literally and is very polite to Alex during all of the tasks. His prize tasks are almost all underwhelming except for one that is accidentally genius. He is so single-mindedly focused during studio tasks that he looks like he is about to murder someone the entire time. Surprise tasks/extra rules that he didn't notice prompt him to stare blankly into the middle distance. Greg is baffled by and attracted to him in equal measure throughout the season. The fanbase is very starkly divided on him. He probably wins the series but not many episodes

Wooster is a sort of Mike Wozniak figure. Endearingly baffled the entire time. Moves in an odd but captivating manner. Committed to the bit. Starts telling anecdotes while he's meant to be doing tasks. Absolutely delights Greg. Is probably lifted up in a studio session at least once (a la Jacaster)

Archie Moffam continues crying

Ukridge wears his mackintosh to studio sessions. He is overly familiar with Alex, who looks despairingly into the camera every time he is manhandled or asked to help with a Scheme. Every prize task is either an opportunity to get Greg in on a Scheme, or to offload things he does not need from previous unsuccessful (i.e. all) Schemes. He gets second place and is pleased as punch about it

That's about all I have at the present moment. Perhaps I'll update with more characters once I've ventured further into the House of Wode. Tootle-pip for now!

Kinda in response to the wattpad anon, I ditched wattpad a couple months ago for tumblr. Honestly I'm glad I did. But wattpad, I felt like no one was reading the stuff I wrote where as here my stuff gets liked a lot. Tumblr has a much better sense of community too

Even though Wattpad does have socialising features, they don't really inspire much socialising... For whatever reason. 🤷‍♀️ And, as the previous anon mentioned, the search engine isn't the best so it's harder for people to even find every fic for a fandom/pairing.

I don't think I'd expect there to be much of a TYO presence on Wattpad if I was on there now, since it's a niche fandom in general and it doesn't seem like the kind of thing that would take off on Wattpad. That said, I have heard that there are a few TYO fics hiding on there? Though, as you say, I doubt there's much/any community unfortunately. 🙁 Tumblr and ao3 are definitely better places to post TYO fic. I can't comment on ff.net or anywhere else as I've not used them, but I do kinda feel that Wattpad is one of the least likely sites for fics and community around any old Britcoms to flourish.

Hello! If you didn’t know, I drew a bunch of comedians (and a Bradley Walsh) for Mark Watson’s marathon show this year and sold them as postcard-sized prints for charity. And, well, there are a lot of few leftovers which I’ve decided to give away as an early christmas(?) treat (or late, depending on the postal system) for any britcom fans out there.

Heavy Post

Hopefully, this will be the only post I have to make of this nature because I believe, as I have said to various people at various moments, that TYO discourse simply isn’t a thing. To create some for a comedy that is nearly 40 years old is, in my opinion, a bit of a reach. Therefore, I’m writing this for my own peace of mind, more than anything else.

There will be no “flaming” or attacks on anyone in here as I’m not - despite my love of certain Britcoms with violent and angry characters - a confrontational person by nature. You are in no way obligated to read this if the subject of discourse makes you uncomfortable; it makes me uncomfortable too. Anyone is welcome to like and/or reply to this post... I only ask you please do not reblog it. This is the only one of my posts that I will ask such of you. Thank you in advance.

First of all, I will start this by saying that last night I decided to block a handful of users from this blog and my other blogs (sparing @ao3feed-theyoungones and @scumbag-monthly as those are supposed to be open for any and all and are not personal blogs). I did not take this decision lightly.

When I first made this blog, whilst of course there were TYO fans on Tumblr already who had been into the show far longer than I and had been posting about it for far longer too, the scumbags as a collective identity did not exist. A group of us chose the name in April 2019 and the feeling that we were some kind of fandom really began when the Scumbags Discord was created that same month. With this in mind, perhaps you can see why the idea that this tiny, niche fandom would have any kind of discourse plaguing it when it simply didn’t exist two years ago is somewhat surreal to me. We’re not superwholock - we aren’t on anyone’s radar.

However, because I’ve been around for a little while now and because I’ve seen the scumbags grow (and also because of things like this ask, which may or may not have been sent by one of the users I have now blocked), I do feel some kind of responsibility for this fandom. That might sound silly because this is the internet and no one is beholden to anyone, in actuality... but I also happen to be the editor of Scumbag Monthly at the moment and I know that certain people (again, some of whom I have now blocked) look up to me for some reason. It’s quite strange because I’m not any kind of authority on The Young Ones or anything Mayall related, really, I just happen to have been a massive fan of this stuff since the age of 13. There are people who have been into this kind of thing longer than me and people whom I’m sure would know more but, nonetheless, it is flattering. However, it was also one of the reasons I didn’t block those users lightly.

Was it even okay for me to block users when a lot of people seem to regard me as some kind of influential scumbag figure (that makes me sound so big headed, I swear that isn’t my intention)? Was I making the fandom less inclusive? What about if these people wanted to submit to Scumbag Monthly - how would that work? Maybe I was taking things too seriously.

Luckily, I had the epiphany that, actually, I am free to cultivate my Tumblr experience in whichever way I like and I do not have to keep in touch with users who make me uncomfortable just because I might have some kind of role in this fandom. I am a person with feelings and mental health to consider too. At the end of the day, I am here because I love this group of comedians and I want everything connected to that to be as positive as it can be (save for rather obvious sad topics concerning our Lord of Misrule etc). This meant that I could block them and I didn’t have to justify it to them.

Now, this is not to say that I consider the users I blocked to be bad people. In fact, I wish them the best in life and hope they can be happy some day, as I get the impression they currently aren’t. One of the triggers for this discourse was people being young and angry - it reminded me of Rick, in a way, which isn’t a good thing. The Tumblr mindset is also another cause for blame; everyone should take breaks from this place.

As for the crux of the discourse - that is, people calling Vyvyan psychotic when they mean violent - here are my thoughts.

The stigmatisation of those with psychosis is, of course, awful and not something that anyone should encourage. That said, I don’t think this fandom has encouraged that stigmatisation. Not just because we are tiny, but because I simply don’t see hordes of us screaming about Vyvyan being psychotic when we mean violent. It isn’t a regular stream of thought. I have scoured posts I thought the discourse could have been provoked by and the word psychotic is not used in them. Psychopath is - and I know this word in itself holds controversy - but Vyvyan is a psychopath, at least in canon. Since the four of them were caricatures and stereotypes based on university students of the time, not to mention the fact the TYO is a comedy and its primary focus is to amuse, I don’t think calling Vyvyan a psychopath is out of order. Most of the depth we associate with him, most of the positive traits, are fanmade. And that’s completely fine! We all love Vyvyan, don’t we?

The original discourse post itself admits that the user has only seen about two instances of scumbags calling Vyvyan psychotic... which is why I think a fandom wide call-out post was unnecessary and triggered some defensiveness. As did the guilt trip reblog that demanded everyone reblog the post, because we all hate seeing those on Tumblr, don’t we? I can accept that the initial reasoning behind asking people not to call Vyvyan psychotic when they mean violent was obviously not malicious - however, it tars everyone here with the same brush and and creates an issue where, as I have said, there simply isn’t one. Do some of us call Vyvyan psychotic sometimes when we mean violent? I’m sure we do, just as I’m sure everybody everywhere uses the word to describe violent people sometimes. The issue here is that society thinks the word psychotic is a synonym for violent, not a few people online trying to enjoy an old show.

I looked through my TYO fics and found a few instances where I have called Vyvyan psychotic when I meant violent - I will hold my hands up - and I have absolutely no issue with going back to them and picking another word. I am fine with being educated when I accidentally slip up and I would hope that people believe me when I say that my choice of wording in these instances does not reflect any “secret prejudices”. I will also be editing my Tag Yourself meme and changing one of Vyvyan’s points from “innocently psychotic” to “innocently sadistic”.

But... this still doesn’t mean that this is a huge issue that required wide-scale chastising or for anyone to feel a deep sense of shame. I know this because the instances where I myself have slipped up are so infrequent and unnoticed that no one has ever come to me to tell me of my mistake. Nor has anyone previously ever lamented the word being used or fought for their right to use the word. It just wasn’t a point of discussion; it is so minuscule here. In fact, I know for certain that the user who made the post hasn’t read the fics where I slipped up, which again prompts the question of where exactly on Tumblr (and I must assume they saw it on Tumblr because this is where the call-out post was made) they saw this happening. At the end of the day, I suppose it doesn’t really matter.

I would like to think that, as such a small fandom, if one of us has a problem with something another has said, we could talk to them privately instead of vaguely calling them out alongside everyone else publicly. Ill intentioned or not, that post created hostility. Going private about something first seems like the more rational choice to me.

Now, about why I took what some could call the extreme reaction of blocking certain users (indeed, I have already been vagued by a passive aggressive post because of my choice to do this, which I expected to happen). I like to think that the scumbags as a fandom are pretty inclusive and welcoming of everyone. I have tried to make the users I blocked last night feel welcome since their arrival and even spoke to a couple of them on a fairly regular basis. That said, secretly I have also long expected that if some sort of drama were to break out in this fandom, they would probably not be too far away.

Again, I am not insinuating that they are bad people when I say this because this is Tumblr, the home of drama. It is simply the feeling I got from them for various reasons that I will not go into here - and I was right. The discourse of the last couple of days is not even the first time I have feared this group were going to create discourse.

And so I’ve blocked them. For me.

I’m not going to name and shame anyone here as that is not the scumbag way - the discourse post is still up (at the moment) and perfectly viewable for anyone curious enough. I will admit that both sides got too emotional and as with any argument that has turned into a row, it could have been handled better. This isn’t good/evil or right/wrong. Truthfully, by the time the discourse finally ended, what was being argued over was not even Vyvyan being called psychotic so I think this speaks for itself over the seriousness of the issue.

I’ve felt a sense of calm since I finally bit the bullet and blocked the users I’ve been concerned about for a while. Personally, this feels good because I do really like our fandom space and I’ve felt stressed over this issue, as I know others have too. For anyone who was aware of the discourse and felt distressed: it is over now. We can move on. I promise you that I will keep my blog a positive, friendly place and I hope this incident hasn’t marred your enjoyment of the show.

It really has nothing to do with The Young Ones.

As the pan-global phenomenon himself liked to say, love is the answer. With that in mind, lets stop trying to niggle each other for the sake of niggling and enjoy this whacky show!
