So about that Kai hair animation error from Episode 9 (?), it honestly seems to me that the animators altered Kai's hair to properly fit in the Wolf Masks, but in those couple of shots, forgot to fix it?

I think this is my genuine favorite animation error in the entire series, because it has actively fueled the visual idea of Unagami being a Super broken game to me for years now.

We don't see really Any issues in Prime Empire aside from Unagami sometimes glitching between forms a bit, and the purple glitch area the ninja got ambushed in.

Having Unagami's hand be missing, even though it was completely unintentional, is genuinely one of the best errors ever, because it shows he isn't actually as intact as he would appear. It helps explain Why Dyer would even really need to Fix him.

Has anyone else noticed how in Season 4 of Ninjago in the episode “Ninja Roll” there is a funny little animation bug I noticed.

When there is 6 minutes left in the ep as Jay says “Lloyd is closing the gap but the clock is against us,” we see Lloyd in the background with his animation being sped up and it looks all wonky. Near the end of the shot we see more people slide in because they are not animated.

Ninjago animation errors my beloved.

Yes, of course I wanted to see Cole T-posing in the back of that shot. Why would I not?

One of my favourite subtle things about Ninjago is Garmadon's body image arc. It's not something you'd really notice on a first viewing but in early seasons, Garmadon is actually quite concerned with his weight. The first instance of this is in season 1, when he's staying on the Bounty with the Ninja. During the montage of him being a horrible roommate, there's a scene of him eating "condensed evil", which of course grosses out the team.

Kai comments on it to one of the other ninja, saying that "it's supposed to be low in fat". It's a throwaway line that wouldn't really matter, if it weren't for the next instance.

In season 3, Cyrus Borg reveals that he has attempted to create "a diet pill that actually works".

Garmadon is the most intrigued by this invention, and near-frantically asks Borg if the pill actually works, telling Lloyd that he'll "understand when he's older". He shows strong disappointment when Borg says that the pill does not in fact work as intended.

These two scenes, taken together, are very telling. Garmadon for some reason or another is self-conscious about his weight.

Now, flash forward all the way to Crystalized and what do we see?

Garmadon enjoying himself some pizza and canned drinks. (Now some might see this as another instance of him being a bad roommate, and while that is partially the case with him leaving chip bags and pizza boxes lying around, it's also fair to note that he tells Wu and Lloyd to avoid making a mess because "Vinny just vacuumed". So either this is just an error on the animation department's part, or Garmadon has some intention of cleaning up after himself (we also see a large stack of pizza boxes outside the apartment, implying that he's not just gonna leave them on the floor).)

Anyway, this scene shows significant character development on Garmadon's part for multiple reasons. The main point of this entire episode is to showcase how much effort Garmadon is putting in in his attempt to become a better person. And I'd like to think that part of that arc was about working through his issues with his weight and body image, because fun fact, being kind to yourself is part of being kind to others.

Anyway this is just a fun observation I had, and one of the many reasons why Roomie Garmadon is my favourite Garmadon.

Ninjago Character Search Engine

I made a tool where you can search Ninjago characters by name, type, allignment, species, gender, season, or a combination of all those factors. If you want to play around with it here's the link. I compiled all of the data myself so there's likely a few errors. I've already corrected where I had accidentally labeled Zane's dad as a serpentine. Please let me know if there's any problems!

How to use it

Basically, you just input the criteria you're interested in seeing. For instance, if you wanted to see all of the nindroids in Ninjago, you would do a search as follows.

An important thing you may notice here is I not only input "Nindroid", but I also input "New." I did this because my index has a new entry for each character each season. If you choose not you choose not to put "New," the output will include 21 Zanes, which is great but may not be what you're looking for.

Another thing to note is that if you're not searching by name, you need to make sure the name box is completely blank or you will get 0 results like in the following search where I left a space bar in the Name box.

If you are searching by Name, make sure the name exactly matches the entries or nothing will show up.

You can either view the entry in the index on the next sheet, or you can just find the person by inputting the proper criteria.

I also left some comments on the sheet with some useful tips! Feel free to ask any questions!

Criteria

I think it's important I explain how I created and employed my criteria as it can be pretty subjective.

Type

Type is one of my more subjective criteria. The options are Main, Supporting, Recurring, Guest, or Ensemble and I agonized over some of these placements. For instance, did Mr. F fulfill a supporting or Recurring role during season 9? Very difficult to say. Still, generally, these were my definitions. Main: Ninja (usually) or someone who significantly contributed to the plot and had a large percentage of screentime (it takes a lot for me to demote a ninja from main, but I had to in DR) ex: Lloyd in season 4

Supporting: A character that has a significant degree of screentime, their own personality/backstory, and helps another character push the plot along ex: Garmadon in season 4

Recurring: Pretty much any character that speaks in more than a few episodes ex: Chope and Kapau in season 4

Guest: A character with personality who speaks or otherwise makes a mark in only one episode that season ex: Morro in season 4

Ensemble: A character that's only in the background and/or has no personality of their own and/or is just sort of filling out an army ex: Acidicus in season 4

Allignment

Allignment is also a very tricky category. I had to make a choice about whether neutral or good would be the default for characters I don't know much about. I went with good as I feel like it fits the tone of the show. Thus, I assume for instance that Mara from Nya's class is a good person even though she's done nothing to demonstrate that.

Good: Default. Also, if you help save the world, I usually let it overshadow previous bad behaviour. ex: Arin in Dragons Rising (S1)

Neutral: You have to be pretty morally ambiguous to get this designation. I generally assigned it to influencers, anti-heros, somewhat redeemed villains, and members of morally unclear societies. ex: Agent Rodrick Allen in Dragons Rising (S1)

Evil: I generally assigned this to all antagonists, even if they weren't actively trying to destroy the world. ex: Rapton in Dragons Rising (S1)

Species

Here's a list of each species I included in my index.

Most of this criteria is pretty objective, so I'll only clarify the less obvious ones.

Beast: Any animal, monster, or creature. ex: Krag from the Ice Chapter

Construct: I applied this to any character created by another whether it be through magic or engineering. I excluded Nindroids because they're a large enough sub-category. ex: Bonzle from Dragons Rising or MiniPix Seven from Crystalized

Unknown: This just applies to the Forbidden Five as we don't know much about them but they don't appear human. ex: Nox in Dragons Rising

Miscellaneous: I only applied this in rare categories where not only was their species a bit unclear, but they appeared to be the only member of that species on screen. ex: Benthomaar from Seabound

Gender

Oh no, it appears I accidentally created a gender cascade. Anyway, I based character's genders primarily off of the gender of their VA , but I also took into consideration the pronouns other characters used to refer to them. I didn't do a thorough transcript search though, so let me know if I've made any errors. I designated some characters as unknown, usually because they neither spoke nor were spoken about.

Season

Season, like species, is also pretty objective but I'll clarify some of my choices. I only used titles for Day of the Departed and the Islandbecause they don't really fit into the numbered seasons. I used numbers rather than season names for the most part because they're more concise. I designated Dragons Rising seasons 1 and 2 as 16 and 17, primarily because that's how I view them, but also for this conciseness factor. I split season 17 into two seasons (17 and 17.5) because they're two unqiue arcs that different casts of characters, some of which have changed their allignments/types between part 1 and 2. I may do the same for 11 and 16 in the future.

New/Old

I put a new entry for each character so it was necessary for me to designate whether this was the first entry of the character or a repeat entry. Having multiple entries allows you to view how characters changed over seasons rather than only being able to see their initial criteria. It also allows you to see the full cast breakdown for each season.

I’m upset so I’m gonna rant for a while

You guys need to know that Cole is my favorite character in Ninjago. He’s funny, can be relatable at some times, and is probably the nicest person on the show

My only problem with being a Cole fan is that we don’t really get much from him if that makes sense

Like in season one the only things that happen to him is he gets hypnotized by the serpentine and he comes out to his dad for being a ninja

Season 2 he does the exact same thing as everyone else. Sure he’s the first one (besides Nya) to turn evil but that’s for 3 seconds of screen time and it gets reversed

To be fair though it’s the same with Jay and Zane (I mean some people believe that Zane was just an animation error but I like to believe he turned evil tbh)

Season 3 had the stupid-ass love triangle that I will not be talking about because this already long-ass rant will become a fucking essay

Season 4 he was the first ninja to get kicked out of the tournament. Do you guys sense a pattern?

It feels like he’s always the last one picked for stuff. He’s the first one to turn evil, or to get kicked off the team. Or he’s shoved into an awkward love triangle where he doesn’t even like the girl in question.

What I’m trying to say is that he’s always the afterthought of the earlier seasons

In season 5 they kill him off

I guarantee this is because they didn’t know what else to do with him

Kai had the thing with Lloyd. Jay and Zane had that funny bit where Zane’s voice box broke and Jay couldn’t fix it right. Nya was training to be the water ninja. Lloyd was the villain of the season (technically not but who cares)

What does Cole get to do?

Oh yeah!

He fucking dies

Season 6 he does nothing except find out he can turn invisible and fly, only to end up only using the invisibility powers only once and then they’re never mentioned again

He gets stranded on the island with Nya and Lloyd and has that really awkward sexist line

“I dunno, because it takes a lot of paint to make em look good?” 💀

Then he gets kicked out of the plot while it focuses on Jay (not complaining, I love this season and the characterization of Jay),until he gets sucked into the soul sword. He gets out of the sword, then fucking dies again

He cries at Nya’s death and then time is reversed and he has one extra line that’s canon during this whole season

Day of the Departed

Lord have mercy

It’s supposed to be based around him. And the writers fucked that up.

The whole point of this special was to be centered around Cole, and they make it about the other ninja because he’s an afterthought

But whatever. He defeats the bad guy through the power of friendship after being chained up the whole 40 minutes and then turns back into a human with the coolest scar ever

Season 7, the only thing noteworthy is that this is the only season he has his scar be shown when he’s not using his powers. Besides that, he does absolutely nothing except for shout out Kai’s name when he gets sucked into the portal (fruity ass)

Season 8 is where he finally does something plot relevant instead of fucking dying or turning evil

He becomes a dad for baby Wu and that’s his role throughout most the season, besides being kidnapped after singing worse than my dad in the shower

Season 9. I don’t care that people call it a “Wu season”. This could be classified as a Cole season with how much stuff he gets to do. He’s still Wu’s adoptive dad, he’s the main guy who comes up with the plans, and he’s Rocky Dangerbuff, making this season 100% a Cole season/j

Season 10…

This is where my main argument comes back

Cole got too much stuff to do in seasons 8-9, so what do the writers do?

Why they yeet him off the destiny’s bounty of course!

This is my problem. The writers barely give him anything to do. He finally gets a few seasons where he’s able to be more than just a mannequin, and he gets kicked off the boat

Of course he survives this, because we can’t kill off a main character, we’ve got legos to sell!

(Even though they do this with Zane a million times but that’s a conversation for another day)

And even after that amazing scene where Cole falls off, there’s no reunion between the ninja. They’re just happy he’s alive, thrown his scythe, and after the tornado of friendship, Lloyd fucking dies and it’s focused on him again

Ughhhhhh

I love you Lloyd but the writers are so fucking obsessed with you

Give my boy Cole some more love dammit

Anyways I need to go to bed so I’ll leave it here for now, gonna pick it up tomorrow (I’m nowhere near done)

Mysterium in my Trials and Errors Niniago AU!

Truly a realm worthy of its mystery and majesty, Mysterium is where many seemingly more "fantastical" tales originated across the seventeen realms. Here, magic comes to those as easily as breathing, provided one can learn via teacher or has the aptitude for it. Some chose to take more... immediate shortcuts.

While magic spans across all the realms and is accessible to all, Mysterium is one of only three realms that has it as a focal point. The other two are the long fallen sister worlds; the Cursed Realm, and Djinnjago. Yet, where those two were primarily based on "Wish Magic" and "Cursed Magic" Mysterium is largely indifferent to the types its inhabitants use – that is, if its rules for magic are met accordingly and not abused.

Something that must be learned very quickly about these rules is that there are two baseline types of magic: dark and light. Consumption and Preservation.

Dark magic focuses on high risk, high reward - there have been many cases of sorcers and mages who have fallen into disaster and met an unforunate demise for failing to meet the trade. Consumed by the corruption, if not scarred for life and living in discomfort. Yet there are those who have managed to withstand the ordeal and have unlocked necromancy – the cruelest practice of dark magic there is, as it tears the soul of the undead in half. Producing a twisted abomination that is stuck between life and death.

Light magic, or rather, preservation magic, isn't a much, much longer process. Where dark magic allows for the sacrifice of oneself or an outside source to hasten the process for power, light magic often revolves around the well-being of others and oneself in the journey. While it sounds simple, many a mage or sorcerer have gone years and years until they've gained the knowledge to use it safely. Many go under tutelage and learn from more experience. There is no clear-cut way to short-cut light magic.

Additionally, to understand magic here, one must acknowledge that they can not force it to stay within a singular medium. Differing magics use many, many kinds of items, such as crystal balls, hexes, gemstones, potions, sacrifice – yet some require no items at all, instead, they are preformed by the caster themself via vocal citation or motions. Many have even engraved symbols on themselves to ease the casting process, too. Whether it be on skin, scales,or feathers.

While there is only one currently known region that houses Mysterium, that being the south-eastern portion of Ninjago's continent, a sorceress who resides there has claimed she has seen versions of Munce and Geckles there before The Merge, yet compared to Ninjago. It appears that Mysterium's Munce are visibly bigger, yet they prefer living in family groups compared to mass tribes. The Geckles, she said, are still about the same level of social, if not a bit more energetic, compared to Ninjago's given that they do not reside in caves but in forests.

According to her, many types of mythical animals from other stories in the realms do exist, and as far as she is aware, only within Mysterium, however. She has tales of witnessing unicorn migrations and kelpie territorial disputes. She's even seen basilisk and cockatrices being hunted by lung dragons. Which, on the note of rarer animals, seems to have a more recent known as a qilin that have become more common with the Merged Worlds.

As for for her name, she boldly yet kindly said:

"Gandalaria, the High Sorceress!"
