New job means the brain's been a' churning with code lately. Putting some cycles towards @renegadeguild this month-- signature order spine lines are (languishing) in review (as Draft) and I threw together a typeset assembly tool in hopes of finally (collaboratively) tackling the idea of a Renegade cookbook.
Tumblr media
Launched in honor/anticipation of Edible Book Day (April 1st), the Renegade PDF Potluck tool is currently accepting entries. Currently only available to Renegade Bindery folks (thems on the Discord) -- you can find the link & info in the Event on the server.
Deadline for entries is tomorrow (Saturday, March 22nd 2024) @ midnight PST but seeing as only 2 entries have been submitted so far, might be extending that a bit.

TSMC is preparing for mass production of the 2nm (N2) node by the end of 2025, with higher demand than previous nodes. Customers such as Apple, NVIDIA, and AMD are ready to adopt this advanced technology. Key Points: Mass production of the 2nm node expected in Q4 2025. Higher demand than previous nodes, with Apple as the first customer. Improved performance by 10-15% and reduced power consumption by up to 35%. Expanded production capacity to 130,000 wafers per month... read more: https://www.turtlesai.com/en/pages-2767/tsmc-accelerates-2nm-node-record-demand-ahead-of-production

I fully believe that if we go far enough on the whole "radical human augmentation including brain uploads/reconstruction" some very fundamental assumptions are going to have to be challenged. For instance, the notion of "one person"
Like, as it stands, most of society says one living brain and its body, at least electorally.
Because there really isn't a way to fix hive mind edge cases without opening other cans of worms.
Like, if I were designing a brain upload for myself, I would make the body I shove myself into later a standardized-ish design with a special made data transfer procedure so that if two divergent copies of me meet, we can merge memories, and then do my best to remerge frequently to avoid the psychological damage of this scheme. This gives me most of the benefits of the one mind-multiple nodes schema while making my various bodies harder to hijack and avoiding the requirement of get.
So, if there are ten to twenty copies of the same person, with independent minds but periodically merged memories, is that one person? How long without merging before one of the versions is a new person?

spontaneously went to kafka-themed music performance and ended up at a local(?)+finnish metal bands' show, lovely evening. spend half the first event on the verge of tears! u'd think lit-inspired band would b not very good at music and showmanship but they really were wonderful. family i went with didnt read kafka (afaik) or provided translations (german band) and still had a good time. as much as i already love failgirl darling franz, stimulating and novel to hear his words and sentiments over easy music... he is so good at striking undercurrent of despair that (simple, funny, ugly, beautiful blahh blah) mundane has and music highlighted that complement of dissonance. next, im not a fan of metal -- well, musically my enjoyment varies case by case, but vocals to me consistently don't manage to achieve cohesion with perceived intent, YET turns out i dont have that issue at all at live shows. among the best genres to listen to live, now i'd say. if the crowd wasn't immediate family and 40+ yo's sitting down would b even better, ofc (need to move). music to step on someone's dick to (lovingly!! im a nice sweet girl). half the point of the show is just checking out boys with long hair afaict. my most lanadelrey-esque streak -- having fun watching men perform activities. u know, sports, shows, debates, interviews. lets watch them do a dance for us

I have notes about items with shades of green that are similar to the Witch's Glintstone Crown, though not exact.
The shade of green is somewhat similar to the green of the glass shards item, which are also broken like the one version of the Witch's helm:
Tumblr media
Alternatively, there are green stones from this cut content item that may have once been Haligtree related:
Tumblr media
Which has a hue that is between the Viridian Amber Medallion and the Haligtree Secret Medallion. The Viridian Amber Medallion basic form is found in a location that suggests a connection with Sellen and also the motif on it is similar to the Preceptor's Mask worn by Seluvis. The +2 version of the Viridian Amber Medallion is itself the only one of the amber medallions of any colour that is found in the Haligtree.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Who is this Carian???
Tumblr media
I still wonder who she is. That's a Carian crest, and her crown is called 'Witch's Crown', but I really don't think it is Rellana or Renna. With Rellana, absolutely nothing about her suggests green glintstone, and Renna is associated with cold and white clothes (more here ( x ))
Tumblr media
This person was also named Grana in version 1.0, but it got patched!
Green glintstone is definitely not something present anywhere else; colors of glintstone, and so, stars, range from cyan to purple + with some yellow amber of course as seen on the tail of Astel and Elden Ring being one of the falling stars.
But from color standpoint, green would be a combination of yellow and blue, so it could refer to this conspectus researching golden amber along with glintstone; actually, it seems like Sellen does do that!
Tumblr media
Another interesting thing about this crown is that it features also a crown of leaves; it is unique to just this crown, and this is not an aesthetic typical for Carians or OG Raya Lucaria! However, it is commonly associated with the Erdtree!
Tumblr media
There is another possible explanation for this, of course:
Tumblr media
Whereas this glintstone is a colder shade of green than the one featured on Witch's Crown, it is also slightly different than cyan glintstone of Azur, and it is the only glintstone in the game that is green at all. And it is found in Ruin-Strewn Precipice - the mines located IN Liurnia!!! So that would not be surprising if a Carian would start a conspectus with this interest, it is a close location. Granted, these mines do connect Liurnia with Altus Plateau, so maybe the point of researching earth alongside stars still stands?
Tumblr media
On the side note, the early version DID suggest research of the golden amber in Raya Lucaria, as well as the "heretical" red glintstone of the Bloodstar that we only now see on Alberich's clothes and face! Perhaps, green glintstone is simply an "altered" state of it, same as red one.
Tumblr media
As for the hypocthetical conspectus itself, it is strangely absent:
Tumblr media
This conspectus appears only as the portrait lady, Sellen herself and whoever was used as a puppet by Seluvis but also became Sellen's new body; you can tell it is a whole different person who existed by different appearance, and who also has the same crown but her glintstone is not cracked.
I wonder whether Sellen's situation contributed to its further unpopularity, since she was too much even by Raya Lucaria's standards and became enemy to literally everyone? I doubt it got out of use because of (presumed) inherent association with Caria because Lazuli conspectus is still pretty prominent even past the point Raya Lucaria turned on Carians. And, again, Sellen was against Carians from the start, too! They will really still take learning methods even from people they don't like.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
^^^ @val-of-the-north also suggested to not use the internal lore's logic to explain the wreath featured on the Witch's Crown, but just see it as a mark of a graduated scholar that still stays in the academy as teacher/staff! And this Carian just happened to be the first to start the tradition like that. Maybe there were male equivalents of these crowns, too (though in the academy where everyone wears hats shaped like bearded dudes, would anyone care about gendering them at all? lol). So, of course nobody really uses these crowns anymore.
Again, I am not sure who this Carian is.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Liurnia has two Mausoleums unique for the entire game that don't feature bells or skulls/guardians and can only replicate ashes of just strong enemies, but not those of Demigods or Rennala. Walking Mausoleums are particularly for Demigods who died during Night of the Black Knives, however, these being in Liurnia and not guarded by the knights who'd sacrifice their heads for their Demigods might mean.. well, that these two people just were not Demigods. I guess if they still deserved Mausoleums, they still needed to be important enough. Considering Liurnial placement of these mausoleums, maybe they just were Carians; still considered relatives-in-law despite Rennala's divorce with Radagon! "Grana" might have been one of these Carians who died in the Night of the Black Knives.
...still, what the green glintstone is, exactly? Simply a unique glintstone that formed just in Liurnia and therefore the association, or hint at combining gold and glintstone? Wreath doesn't help and sometimes I just want to know whether I should go by real life inspirations or solely by internal lore's logic! I suppose it being altered state of glintstone not unlike red Bloodstar's is interesting, but if it can only form in the grounds of the Lands Between, which coexisted with gold even loooong before Marika, it still takes it back to golden ember. AND primordial gold used to be red at the very beginning of life, so maybe cut content's red glintstone is not even that of Bloodstar's, but primordial gold? argh.....

thoughts on using library computers to disguise your digital footprint? because if the machine gets wiped when you log out, and the library doesn't keep detailed records of what machine you were using when, then all someone else would have is IP data unconnected to a person and also mixed in with whatever else folks were doing on the library computers
The machine absolutely does not get wiped when you log out and there's very little chance that a library computer will let you fire up Tor. You're better off using a traffic anonymizer than you are trying to use public computers to cover your tracks. The IP address IS the big risk here.
Libraries are generally really good about protecting their patrons' privacy and I respect the hell out of them for that but computers log everything that you do and can be subpoenaed as evidence even if the library wants to protect user privacy.
Also, I love libraries but you should treat every public computer you come across like it has a keylogger installed on it because it might. Your city could have an overzealous city council that has more control than it should over the library board and has taken it upon themselves to add covenanteyes to the library computers. Your library crew could be fantastic but less tech-savvy than is ideal and may not realize it if malware is installed on one of the machines. The library may clear browser history twice a day but the ISP still has a record of where you went and what time you went there. Somebody could have literally plugged a keylogger into a USB port on the back of the machine.
The point of a traffic anonymizer is it hides where the traffic originated; each node knows where the previous hop came from and where the next hop went, but not what came BEFORE the previous hop or what happened after, or how long the chain was, so there is no way to tell if a message originated in the US or Brazil or Vietnam or Sweden. Sending traffic from a library does the opposite of this, and very clearly says "the person who sent this message did so from this geographic area; they sent messages from these five libraries so we know they're probably within X distance of these libraries" which is a hell of a lot easier to look for than "I can't even say what continent these messages originated from."
Let us say that you go to a library to log in to your protonmail account and email a journalist a link to a file that you've saved in cryptpad. You have the link written down so you don't have to go to a secondary site and you just go sit down directly at the computer and log in to protonmail and fire off your email to the journalist. The email is encrypted, so you know the contents of the email are safe. Let's say the browser history gets automatically wiped every time you close it, and you close it as soon as you stand up and walk away. Here's the incriminating information that generated:
IP address where you accessed your protonmail account
Your protonmail email address, the journalist's address, the time you sent the email, the subject line of the email
And here are the people who can be subpoenaed to share some or all of that information with the government:
The Library's ISP
The Library, who may not carefully track users but who do have event logs on the computers and traffic logs on the firewall
Protonmail
IF you only ever logged in to your protonmail account from that ISP one time, and if you've never logged in to your protonmail account anywhere that is close to your house or your job, you may be fine. But if you logged in to your protonmail on your personal cellphone at work so that you could send photos of documents to yourself, there's some data tying that account to a local IP address. If you set up the protonmail account on a whim at a coffee shop, there's some data tying that account to a local IP address. If you get an email back from the journalist and go to another local library to open it, there's some data tying that account to another local IP address.
And that gets narrowed down very quickly. "Who has access to these sensitive and leak-worthy documents through working at this entity who also lives within a 100 mile radius of these three login locations? Is it 50 people? Is it 5 people? Of the 15 people who have access to these sensitive and leak-worthy documents who work at this entity and live within 100 miles of the three login locations, who is likely to be doing the leaking? Do we fire them all? Do we interview them? Do we compare IP addresses that they've used to log in to work remotely and find that two of them have logged in at the coffee shop? Of those two, one has facebook selfies in a maga hat and the other has a less visible online presence. Let's check their traffic history. Did they check tumblr on a lunch break? Maybe once or twice? Maybe a few times? Sure seems like they are pretty dead-set against the administration. Let's double-check the access logs for this information. Let's review security footage. Let's install the monitoring on their workstation."
The thing is, they're not going to catch you leaking and then track down all the data you left behind to confirm it; they're going to see a leak and get a bunch of digital footprints and use that to narrow down suspect pools. They already know that access to the data is limited and will be reviewing prior access and carefully monitoring future access. You are already in their suspect pool by already being one of the people with known access to the data. Adding an IP address that is geographically close to you, even if it isn't your home IP address, to that is not going to make it *harder* to find you, it can only make it easier.
So just use Tor. You're safer using an anonymizer, which you likely can't do on a library computer. Create the leak email address when you're in a Tor browser, and only EVER access that email account from Tor.
Also I don't mean to jump on you about this, but between the post I've got about why you shouldn't use your work computer to torrent and the safer leaking practices post it's clear that people really don't understand what information they're leaving behind when they use computers and the internet, or how it can be a risk to them.
Accessing burner accounts from a clear IP address means that they're not burner accounts anymore, they're burned.

REPLACEMENT
The itch had begun an hour ago, somewhere down at the base of her skull. She'd thought nothing of it at first. She was deep in meditative thought, doing what she loved best: postulating graph nodes and arcs, verifying loops and connection-points and—
It wouldn't go away. She tried to maintain focus, but it was no use. At last she stirred, rolled her shoulders and clacked her jaws in discomfort.
The noise awakened two of her brethren who sat in alcoves nearby. Their eyes glowed in the dark of the deep cave, annoyed at the disruption of their own meditations. She bared teeth, and they left her alone. She wished that she could dismiss the itch just as easily.
To her left, down below her own alcove, another of her brethren appeared in a puff of closing vacuum and stepped out onto the vast Amaja which dominated the center of the cave. The flat area was intricately carved with cartographic notations: the accumulated efforts of many thousands of journeys through the pathways of warped space which made up the universe.
She watched as her brother stooped far below to scratch a tiny addition to one of the many offshoots of offshoots of paths that made up the Great Map. Her eyes widened, and a sharp anticipation filled her: Her duty and the duty of all her people, was to maintain this map and to refine it, to keep the fixed points true, and to keep the Void at bay. It had been so long since the last Addition. She would have to study this new feature, trace its contours, commit it to memory, and then—
No, not right now. Right now...the itch! It was a mounting pressure, pushing everything else aside. She slumped against the stone and writhed, trying to shift her body, trying to get away, but she couldn't. Her jaw clenched tight, and she raised clawed hands to her head....
Something changed. She sat bolt upright, and the feelers on her head twitched back and forth. Her jaws click-clacked involuntarily, and the two pairs of eyes glared at her again, but she paid them no heed. A door opened in the back of her mind somewhere, and she was hearing something...seeing...knowing something. It was a path, down by the south margin of the larger whorl of the Map. Had it always been there? She'd never noticed....
Abruptly, her mind was there, though her body was not: Her awareness traced the pathways and alighted upon a desolate island, flanked by crashing waves and jagged rocks. This was new to her...she had never fully projected before—that was an ability reserved only for the elders, wasn't it?
The landscape impressed itself upon her awareness—dull rocks and clinging, silver lichen—and somehow, it was all familiar. How could that be, when she'd never traveled there before? Or maybe...maybe she had forgotten? Impossible.
The itching sensation consumed her again, and her mind was pulled further: Now a decrepit fortress rose in her vision. Once more she found that she knew the path, all the way in, through the walls, into stone.
A blue-armored figure tapped its foot in a gray chamber. Its eyes turned round the room, turned, turned...then fixed on her.
Those eyes were familiar too.
Another rush of closing vacuum, and her body vanished from the alcove in the far away cave. The network of the Great Map opened, and she skipped from junction to junction along the clusters of warp-veins and capillaries. Down a side-path, she felt her awareness fixate for a moment on a small islet, where a crushed corpse lay under the daystars, and she understood....
By the time she appeared before the ancient blue-armored Toa, more memories had solidified. Memories of training, of testing...but were they her memories? They seemed real, but how could she know?
"Botar," the Toa said, frowning a little. "Took you three seconds longer than usual."
"The...the Botar is dead," she replied, her tone flat. The words simply came out of her, like a pre-recorded message.
The Toa's eyes widened imperceptibly. A moment passed.
"Well," the Toa said, "it's not the first time. Do you know me?"
Memories of training, of testing....
"Yes. You are...Toa Helryx."
"Just Helryx. I am no Toa. Do you know yourself?"
"I do."
"And who are you?"
A crushed corpse, under the daystars....
"I am...the Botar."
"And the Botar serves the Great Spirit."
"The Botar serves..." she trailed off.
"...Yes?"
To maintain the map...to keep the fixed points true...to keep the Void at bay.
"The Botar serves the Great Spirit," she said, and again the words seemed like they'd already been said for her. "The Great Spirit has called, and I have come."
"Affirmative," Helryx replied, smiling a little. "Hopefully you weren't in the middle of anything."
Postulating graph nodes and arcs...verifying loops and connection-points....
"No...nothing."
"Good. Then let's get back to work."
