Review

I picked this up on Netgalley because the blurb says nonbinary + pirates. What I got was an amazing, action-packed, and inspiring story! Since a sizable chunk of the story takes place in San Juan, I decided to check this off as my challenge book for Puerto Rico.

The story takes place during the Latin American revolutions against their colonial oppressors (circa 1820), and the pirates of the book are Robin Hoods who steal from the Spanish merchant ships and aid the revolutionaries. Mar is a 15-year-old child of a famous pirate who is also 'cursed' (in their opinion) with magia, the ability to make fire and ice. When El Diablo shows up on board to collect on an old deal made with Mar's father, their life is suddenly turned upside down. Mar finds themself on a rival pirate's ship with an annoying (but very cute) captain's son, a mysterious genderfluid demonio, and a deadline to save their father from El Diablo's grasp, if they can conquer their fear of their own magic.

This book is a non-stop adventure from start to finish - from swashbuckling sea life to badass revolutionaries to daring rescues, with demons, magic, and queerness thrown in.

One of the things I loved was that the story didn't need to kill off characters for the sake of drama. Too often side characters are deemed dispensable and killed off without thought to 'up the tension'. Beside an initial tragedy and a flashback (plus a few baddies) it was nice to have my heart spared with a truly happy ending.

Another thing I loved was that this book is so affirming for queerness. Mar's gender neutral-ness is 100% accepted by their family and original crew. Those who know their secret all address Mar neutrally without any ado, and there are multiple gay characters who are just there. Plus Mar's add-on to their final wish -- I laughed and cheered at the same time.

This was a fun and exciting read, and I think it is suited for middle grade all the way up to adults.

[soul-eater-headcanons]

@nonbinary-morro brought up a good point on one of my previous posts! I was speaking about discrimination amongst weapons and the stereotypes and segregation amongst weapons and meisters. They brought up how Excalibur and Justin don’t fit into it.

I instantly thought of this. What is it that both of them have that other weapons don’t? Power. They’re strong. Excalibur is stronger than Justin, but both can win a fight against a regular student any day.

All weapons as we know it were based off of Excalibur, so he was the original. He is the legend. He can be seen as this “pure bred weapon”. But other weapons? They were created after trail and error, experimentations, pain, suffering… From this, we can conclude that people were enamored with his powers and still are. Ox, Kid and Hero are 3 modern day fellows who made that mistake. It’s all about power for humans. They respect and want power, but when somebody different does not have power, they themselves try to rise up and put others down. Does this make sense? It can be seen in our real life world too.

As for Justin, he became a DS at 16. I can’t really speak for if he was discriminated against. You could argue that he was, or that he wasn’t. Either way, becoming a DS 2 years before you graduate is impressive, and in 800+ years of history, being the first MORTAL OR IMMORTAL being to accomplish such a thing? Impressive. People underestimate Justin. I wouldn’t be surprised if he got, “you’ll never…” or “good luck bud” whenever he tried to make progress. Since he became an executioner, I imagine he gained respect from whatever he did or perhaps he became an executioner at 14 (wtf LD?). Either way, he EARNED his power and ran up the ranks and must have earned respect someway or somehow.

Those two differ greatly from what we saw in SEN. I JUST remember that in SEN there is literally an instance where Meme is being grossly sexualized by some douche bags, and Tsugami tries to help. Anya steps in, only to be disappointed that Tsugami cannot transform. Weapons are held to high standards. You need to be perfect as a weapon. And because of how perfect Excalibur and the DS’s are, I think that’s the reason. Everybody at the school expects weapons to be these magical creatures when really they are just normal people. Others think they’re superior because meisters are supposed to be dominant.

Literally, in the Manga, Patty is training to save Kid and Naigus makes a comment about how it is a shame that she is always in Kid’s shadow as his weapon. I don’t remember where this took place, but probably anywhere between 55-70. It happened after Kid was kidnapped and before they went into the book.

That’s my tangent. 90% of weapons are just abused somehow in their life time. Case closed.

Hello. Making this because it’s been a while and I’ve noticed quite a bit of love on my blog in the time I have been gone. Thank you all for that. It truly means a lot. Really lifted my spirits with everything going on. Regardless, I wanted to share some info about me to pin for future curious eyes and for you who are new!

About: My name is Ashera. I also go by Koko, Noé, or Peach. I am 24 years old. I am based in the United States. I am nonbinary and pansexual. I use he/they pronouns. I have a 6 year-old cat named Linden who is my baby. I curse like a sailor, so do not say you haven’t been warned! Also: shitposting is my life.

Ninjago: I have been a fan of Ninjago since it first came out in 2011. Aside from Morro, Jay and Cole are my favorite characters. Cole’s been my favorite the entirety of the show’s run, whereas Jay’s grown on me much more as an adult rewatching the show.

I have an OC named Rho! She is the Master of Language. More about her can be found here, and I’d love you forever if you checked this tag out. As for ships, I honestly don’t have any. I think a lot of the main cast is pretty flexible in who can be shipped, and will read fics/enjoy art of just about any nj ship. Not down for ships involving minors, though. For obvious reasons.
