Anyone else thinking about how distant or actively hostile the ghouls felt during the Manchester Ritual?

Phantom and Perpetua were actively trying to start shit with each other (and then Perpetua tried to start shit with Rain) during Ritual

Rain was very well behaved and didn't react, but Phant was SQUARING UP while the other ghouls were dead still and restrained during the song.

I think Phantom is struggling the most with the change of Papa. They've never experienced a change of Frontman before.

“I’ll see you tomorrow morning, my darling, okay?” Rain’s soft breath tickles Dewdrop’s ear as they speak. The embrace is warm, despite the water ghoul’s cool body temperature, or perhaps, Dewdrop thinks, perhaps it’s simply comforting. All too soon, Rain is pulling away from the hug, pressing a gentle kiss to Dewdrop’s forehead as they do so. “Nice and early by the lake. Don’t forget, darling.” They punctuate the end of their sentence by tilting the Dewdrop’s head up and kissing him slowly; an undercurrent of heat and desire managing to reveal itself through their soft kisses.

Dewdrop’s stomach jolts, a familiar spark of heat blossoming slowly out from his core; tingly warmth and pure, sinful want spreading through his entire body. “Do you– Do you wanna…?”

Rain pulls back reluctantly, and although Dewdrop can see the heat and desire in the water ghoul’s gaze, their eyes are apologetic. “I’m sorry, darling. I think I’m too tired for that tonight, and I don’t want to fall asleep during our little date tomorrow. I really am sorry, darling, I can tell you’re eager.”

“‘S okay. I know you’ve been tired lately. Rest up, you deserve it.” Dewdrop stands up on his tiptoes, pressing a kiss to the very tip of Rain’s nose. “And, hey, if I really need to, I can take care of it myself,” he giggles—fucking giggles; the effect Rain has on him is… concerning to say the least.

“That you can, sundew.” Rain leans down and presses a kiss of their own to Dewdrop’s nose, returning the favour. Dewdrop refuses to acknowledge the heat rising in his cheeks at the gesture of affection.

“Mhmm,” he hums. “I’ll let you sleep now, though, you do look tired.” He reaches up and smooths his thumb over one of the heavy, blue-purple bags under Rain’s eyes sympathetically. “G’night, Rainy. I’ll see you tomorrow.” He can hear the dopey, loving grin in his voice, but he finds that he doesn’t care so much. He doesn’t mind exposing his inner thoughts and raw emotions as much as he used to; not with Rain, at least.

The ghouls go their separate ways; Rain to the right, Dewdrop to the left—the fact that their assigned bedrooms are on opposite ends of the corridor of bedrooms is borderline criminal, Dewdrop thinks; although more often than not, the two ghouls will spend the night cosying up in each others arms in a bed that only belongs to one of them, so it’s not as if the assigned bedrooms situation has ever stopped them. The fire ghoul practically skips down his end of the corridor—there’s no one around to see him and he’s fucking excited for his date with Rain, okay? —until he reaches his door. It’s slightly ajar. Huh, weird. He could have sworn he’d closed it when he’d gone to meet Rain in the commons earlier… He shrugs, pushes the door open the rest of the way and freezes where he’s standing. Okay, that definitely wasn’t there when he’d gone to meet Rain. What the fuck...?

like honestly just give your non binary characters traditionally "gendered" features. just do it. it's not like being androgynous ever stopped non binary characters from being misgendered.

frisk undertale and kris deltarune were androgynous and are only ever referred to by "they/them" and ppl are still arguing over how the "main character is not the player but their own person" message didn't apply to their genders bc they refuse to wrap their head around different pronouns. raine owlhouse was paraded around as "disney's first ever nb representation" by everyone and their mother but bc they have short hair other countries dub them as male. this also happens to most anime nb characters bc of how japanese pronouns work. halara raincode literally has the color scheme of the non binary flag AND their in-game profile says that they, and i quote "have no specified gender" AND several characters remark on it in the actual game but bc theyre voiced by a female voice actor ppl still call them a woman.

like literally at this point just give your nb characters huge tits and a massive beard. if ppl refuse to accept the existence of non binary characters in media, then there is no way to make a character non binary "enough" to convince them otherwise. no matter how much you hammer in their androgyny in an attempt to detach them from "male" and "female," there will be people determined to assign gender roles to any trait you give your character.

creators being hesitant to give their non binary characters traits that could be associated with a binary gender is why every goddamn genderqueer character that the creator wants you to take seriously in popular media has shoulder length hair and a board-flat figure and a perfectly neutrally pitched voice. like. just do what you want at this point. the character is non binary because your story said so and people who misgender them would have done that no matter how androgynous they look.
