[ID: An MS Paint drawing showing a stick figure, labeled, "Cis bioessentialist", in comic sans, drawn with the crayon brush smiling at the camera and pointing over their shoulder, saying, "Yeah, my book has Queer rep! This brick wall is aroace and agender, and uses it/its pronouns!". Behind the stick figure is a 3D brick wall drawing tilted at an angle to the camera. In the foreground, silowets of grey and black represent a crowded audience, as various people say: "Woah…" "This is the most amazing, progressive trans representation I've ever seen!!!" "OMG!!!" "Amazing!" "We stan!!" "It doesn't get any better than this!" "So progressive!" "What a perfect ally!" End ID.]
Looking at The Murderbot Diaries in particular with this post, but this also applies to anything it applies to. If you're thinking, "Does this apply to X?" The answer is probably yes.
And guess what. I'm aroace. I'm nonbinary. My pronouns are it/its. I'm not even human.
You must fucking reckon with the fact that the only reason Murderbot is aroace, agender, and uses it/its pronouns is because it's a robot who doesn't have genitals. It is the metaphorical equivalent of a brick wall in terms of attraction.
And at the same fucking time you must also fucking respect the fact that it is aroace, it is nonbinary, and it does in fact fucking use it/its pronouns and it's touch averse.
The fact that Murderbot was only written this way because of Martha Wells' long-standing bioessentialism does not change the fact that if you erase these traits from Murderbot you are being exorsexist, aroacemisic, and ableist.
"Murderbot is only written to be this way because Martha Wells has a problem with bioessentialism that she has yet to unpack since before 2011 " and "Murderbot is aroace, nonbinary, touch averse, and uses it/its pronouns and if you erase those traits and identities you are erasing the real people who share those traits" are not conflicting statements. They are in fact part of the same fucking sentence.
If you refuse to aknowledge the bioessentialism baked into The Murderbot Diaries (with potentially only one last chance for it to be fixed in System Collapse if she on from the series), you cannot be a true ally to the people that Murderbot represents, because you still don't understand what exorsexism, and amisia, and look like.
How can Martha Wells fix the bioessssentialism rampant in her books? By talking to trans people. Talking to nonbinary people. Talking to aroace people.
By including important, reocurring human nonbinary, aroace, and it/its user characters in her books.
By including robots and other nonhumans who have male and female genders as well as nonbinary ones.
She could very easily have one of the main human characters, say, Mensah? Ratthi? Come out as nonbinary in System Collapse. And have Murderbot either reveal, or remember, that it used to have different pronouns and gender assigned to it, and that it changed those assignments when it hacked its governor module.
Introduce robot characters who are not literally just genderless and attractionless because they're the character equivalent of a brick wall.
If Three comes back, have it explore its sexuality and gender. Because we literally don't even know that its pronouns are it/its because it's not like anyone bothered to fucking ask, because Martha Wells refuses to have characters tell eachother what their pronouns are.
No, people, they do not list their pronouns in their feed bios. This is explicitly shown to us. It's literally just listing their sex, and their gender and pronouns are inferred from there. That is not progressive or inclusive, that's literally just transmisia and biological essentialism.

Well, I had book 1 as free and book 2 as $5 as ebooks, BUT apparently we have to have some additional conversation about goddamn eugenics right now, so I am making them both free again until my get-these-books-into-libraries campaign. So for like, a couple weeks.
Would you like some FREE character-driven, very queer, late-YA scifi that plays with complex family dynamics, superheros, propaganda, medical trauma, disability, and eugenics? But that also aren't just here to depress you?
(Also includes one nonbinary author's take on the shapeshifting nonbinary character trope, and some girls who don't know if they wanna make out with each other or BE each other, and also an ace character who is just chill about being ace actually.)
You can get the ebooks here or here, and the not-free paperbacks from all the usual suspects. Book 1 has an audiobook on audible, book 2 and wider audiobook release for book 1 is underway. Also, should you toss me some money (optional) all funds go directly to proven climate orgs.
Secondhand Origin Stories (book 1):
An outsider with superheroic ambitions
A near-invincible teen with infamous powers
A prodigy with treasonous technology
A frail girl with a family legacy
A supervillian with mysterious motives
And a family fractured by secrets
Names in Their Blood (book 2):
After a spring they barely survived, the Sentinels, and their family, head to rural Minnesota for long awaited reunions and a chance to finally start to heal. But when they realize that genetically altered people have been going missing from the small town that houses the US's only full service hospital for genetically altered people they have to decide who they can trust- and fast, or thousands of people could die.
Reblogs very much appreciated!
Please feel free to pop into my asks if you want further content warnings or have questions.

*Sigh* I fear we've fallen into the trope of inhuman nonbinary. Ace is a euclidean, and Maddie's parent is a siren
Not to say neither of them have humanity
Just something I've noticed
Honestly resisting the urge to make everyone nonbinary.
Oo also wanna draw something for this but this is an excuse to talk about my Shifty's gender!
Shapeshifter is like THE nonbinary creature, so what if one who has only ever been around men saw himself as masc? Not much other complex thought. I just thought nonbinary creature with a binary identity was a fun idea.

Random question but in the Porcelain AU do you have ideas for the sexualities and romantic orientation for each Link?
Hi! Love this question, thank you for the ask! 😊
Had to add a cut-off as it was getting a bit long, haha. So explanations are under the cut.
Vio: Gay, Demisexual/Demiromantic. Shadow: Pansexual/Panromantic, Nonbinary. Red: Panromantic, Demisexual. Green: Bisexual. Blue: Gay.
Vio is Gay, total homosexual that he is lol. He is also Demiromantic as I hc him as someone that while he is gay he hasn't really experienced attraction often in his life. He's relatively unfazed as a person both in romantic and sexual attraction. Emphasis on relatively. Once he met Shadow and actually got to know him he developed an attraction to him, though he can be kind of dense when it comes to his feelings, so by the time he actually realized he was like in love with Shadow, he had died. Might be slightly projecting but I also imagined him as Demi, like he never really experienced sexual attraction before getting together with Shadow, and then he became a total sex pest (sorry couldn't help it haha). Anyway, like I imagine he was content with the fact he wasn't interested in people like that and then the first time he saw Shadow with his new outfits *cough* tiddies out *cough* he was like "...oh".
Shadow is Pan, mainly because I feel like he as a shapeshifter/shadow creature, he doesn't really have much of a care when it comes to gender. He believes that he would love his partner no matter how they presented as, or were. I'd love you even if you were a worm, kind of mindset haha. On this same vein of thought, he is also Nonbinary, he as I've mentioned is a shapeshifter, so while his shapeshifting abilities aren't on the same level as before he can still shapeshift to appear more feminine or masculine if he wants to. His default though is somewhere in between/neither, as he doesn't really have hylian-typical genitalia. His pronouns are He/Him or They/Them, but I feel like he doesn't care too much on what people use to refer to him with pronoun-wise.
Red is Pan as well! He believes firmly that love is love and it wouldn't matter what gender or sex their partner was/has. He is a love machine, like he would be the best partner, he just has some much love to give, plus he is is incredibly emotionally competent/open, empathetic and great communicator to top it all off. He experiences attraction, but he is a bit slower to connect to people, much to his own internal frustration, so going from friends to lovers is the way to go, a slow burn if you will.😘 So Red is also Demisexual, same as Vio, but it's mainly because he is slow to fall in love with a partner, so he has to really get to know someone before he actually feels attracted in that way. Lol can you tell I love the trope of a character with massive sex appeal being on the Ace spectrum, it makes me giggle.
Green is Bisexual, I don't really have too much of an explanation for this one lol. Green is a bit hard to pin down, he isn't too interested in dating, he is so focused on his work that it almost seems like he isn't interested at all. But he is still kind of exploring his sexuality, he is surprisingly shy when it comes to romance/intimacy. He wouldn't admit it but despite his somewhat frosty demeanor, he finds his eyes linger sometimes on the knights training, or other certain people. 😉
Our boy Blue is Gay. It was never anything he struggled with, just something he figured out quickly, acknowledged and then moved on smoothly lol. He's pretty indifferent to dating/courting, as he's also pretty focused on his work. But he definitely wouldn't be opposed if someone he was interested in came onto him hehehe 🤭 As opposed to Green, he is also quite confident in his sexuality as well.

also for newer followers who might not know
i'm writing a book! and it's getting published!
if you just want the immediate details you can click the read and read a short FAQ! if you need more to get sold on it, stick around and check it out!
My YA SFF fantasy debut, ALVOSKIA: Call of the Infrans, follows an Unchosen one named Ally who is struggling to find where she belongs amidst her chosen one found family family when violence arrives at their doorstep, and they're forced to fulfil their duties earlier than expected. There's dragons and child soldiers and subverted fantasy tropes, some tone consistent werewolves, an almost entirely queer main cast with the majority also being characters of colour, and if you've been following my blog for any amount of time, it probably has something for you.
If you like ATLA: "what if there were multiple Avatars running around, and what if they weren't all automatically good people?" + past lives and reincarnation cycles
If you like Derry Girls: hot mess of teenagers getting in and out of trouble together while being ridiculous (and sometimes very sad)
If you like PJO: young teenagers with cool powers going on quests together and coming-of-age. And snark. Lots of snark
If you like Six of Crows: morally dubious collection of protagonists, some heisting may or may not happen, outsiders working together
If you like TDP: elves and dragons and long standing grudges and politics
If you like Star Wars: y'know how the Force like consumes you the farther you wander in? yeah that's the magic system here. + some shadow, death, and shapeshifter stuff
If you like HTTYD: you're here for the found family and fun fantasy aesthetic aren't you
Rep: queer (aro, ace, bi, pan, trans, lesbian, nonbinary, genderfluid, gay main characters, often times overlapping); Asian (Indonesian), Black, Sri Lankan and Pakistani (coded) rep; hijabi rep; one character is an amputee and one main character is Autistic.
The debut month is March 2026! Sometimes there is even very pretty (commissioned or friends) art for it:
If you want more info in the meantime you can shoot me an ask or you can follow this sideblog for it. If you want a taste of my fandom writing first you can check out my AO3 or writing snippets on said side blog, like this one:
Likes and reblogs mean a lot and I hope you enjoy!

Queer Fiction Free-for-All Book Bracket Tournament: Preliminary Round

Book summaries and submitted endorsements below:
Buffalo Is the New Buffalo by Chelsea Vowel
"Education is the new buffalo" is a metaphor widely used among Indigenous peoples in Canada to signify the importance of education to their survival and ability to support themselves, as once Plains nations supported themselves as buffalo peoples. The assumption is that many of the pre-Contact ways of living are forever gone, so adaptation is necessary. But Chelsea Vowel asks, "Instead of accepting that the buffalo, and our ancestral ways, will never come back, what if we simply ensure that they do?"
Inspired by classic and contemporary speculative fiction, Buffalo Is the New Buffalo explores science fiction tropes through a Métis lens: a Two-Spirit rougarou (shapeshifter) in the nineteenth century tries to solve a murder in her community and joins the nêhiyaw-pwat (Iron Confederacy) in order to successfully stop Canadian colonial expansion into the West. A Métis man is gored by a radioactive bison, gaining super strength, but losing the ability to be remembered by anyone not related to him by blood. Nanites babble to babies in Cree, virtual reality teaches transformation, foxes take human form and wreak havoc on hearts, buffalo roam free, and beings grapple with the thorny problem of healing from colonialism.
Indigenous futurisms seek to discover the impact of colonization, remove its psychological baggage, and recover ancestral traditions. These eight short stories of "Métis futurism" explore Indigenous existence and resistance through the specific lens of being Métis. Expansive and eye-opening, Buffalo Is the New Buffalo rewrites our shared history in provocative and exciting ways.
Short story collection, speculative fiction, science fiction, Indigenous futurism, adult
Not The Fighting Kind by Will Soulsby-McCreath (Not That Kind of Dandy duology)
Endorsement from submitter: "Nonbinary pirates! Includes nonbinary sex scene that doesn't gender the protagonist."
Nat should be doing what dandies do creating fashion, trading information, working on the edges of high society to further their own aims, and flirting with scandal. Instead, they're in the bowels of a ship, captured by pirates intent on ransoming them back to their family as soon as they find out to which family they should send the letter.
Unfortunately for all involved, Nat knows one thing the pirates can never be allowed to find
They are unransomable.
Their family has plenty enough money to pay any ransom, but Nat's father sent them to sea in the first place, put them in the path of these pirates, because he wanted Nat out of the way.
Ransoms create scandal. Nat can't afford another.
Not The Fighting Kind is the first installment of the Not That Kind Of Dandy series, an adult pirate fantasy series that follows Nat as they try to use their dandy-ish ways to survive in situations one wouldn't expect a dandy to manage.
Fantasy, queernorm, series, adult

Genderfluid shapeshifters are mixed for me. It makes sense, it can be cool and lot of other genderfluid people like it, but it plays into the 'nonbinary alien' trope which feels very, of course, alienating. It hurts that there's often not much genderfluid and nonbinary rep outside of these things.

(addon to the queerness question i thought of literally just after hitting the ask button:) how much do you think they fit the norms of our society? how much do you think they fit the norms of their society?
The norms of our society? Probably not much, being a bunch of queer, polyamorous monsters and all. Even as far as polycules go theirs is LARGE especially as interconnected as it is.
Their society? Still probably not much, again because of how big their polycule is. After all, the other merc teams and the MannCo boys were a little teehee scandalized at the fact that Fortress are all fucking each other. It's not alarming at least to other mercenaries, but it certainly is quite the debauched arrangement to most folks.
Spy and Pyro are probably the furthest from the norm overall, though, what with Pyro being as ancient as he is having probably changed how he identifies both in gender and sexuality a bunch of times, because even though he's fire, that stuff can get pretty fluid (hehe) on a long enough timescale. And Spy who identifies as cis in spite of living as other genders on purpose without issue and holding that identity too, in addition to his own. His gender has layers, like an ogre. Being a shapeshifter can give you a very different relationship to gender and identity than single-form creatures tend to have. It doesn't make him nonbinary as a default (I dislike that trope with shapeshifters) but it does make him more consciously aware of gender as a concept, as a construct, and the places where he does and does not interact with it and alter it.

Former French aristocrat; Ex-ballet dancer who somehow got cursed or smth with shapeshifting powers. No one’s really sure, not even Odette herself.

Buster Reuter (he/it) — Head Ventriloquist
Year: 1952

Year: 1968
Age: 17
NONBINARY REP MY BELOVED! Also somehow related to Jim Henson because I say so
Denise is a feminine name with both French and Greek origins. A feminine version of Dennis, this name translates to “follower of Dionysius.” In Greek mythology, Dionysus, aka Bacchus, is known as the god of wine, fruit, and vegetation. (thebump.com)
The name Campbell is primarily a gender-neutral name of Scottish origin that means Beautiful Field. From the Latin De Bello Campo meaning "from the beautiful field." Could also be from a Scottish/Gaelic nickname (cam béul) meaning "crooked or sassy mouth." (babynames.com)

Aesthetic boards of my oc :D
(TW: one of them involves what I assume is fake blood, not much but thought I'd warn either way. I will also be lightly mentioning things like death of loved ones, cult survival, grooming, bad people or morally grey people turned for the better, Mother Miranda being a bad person, and literally ALL of my OCs being some type of supernatural thing)
Ceris, my autistic mentally ill witch OC who is head over heels in love with Daniela (she is just like me fr) was taken care of by Donna but technically taken in by Mother Miranda as a young child after the gruesome death of her parents (rip)
Aurelia, my werewolf OC, shes a cult survivor along with Milo as well as a mean girl turned good (although still working on it), she and Milo had to flee before she was forced into an arranged marriage and ended up at the university, shes a perfectionistic aspiring actress, and the love interest of Cassandra
Daemnys, another child whose parents died (or did they) was taken in by Mother Miranda and was later turned into a demon because of Mother Miranda's experiments to be used as a weapon (it's a shapeshifting thing for the sake of going to school not being a problem) She eventually joins the student council by the instruction of Mother Miranda to keep an eye on Bela, but instead she falls in love lol (also she had a previous lover who was killed off by Mother Miranda for the sake of keeping her loyal)
Blain, a monster hunter on a mission to kill Vivienne because of a misunderstanding, was employed by Mother Miranda to keep an eye on Angie (yes this is a bodyguard trope except it is to keep her from being the chaos) She's asexual and had a previous lover who was killed by a demon (she originally also believed Daemnys was the one behind it)
Vivienne, is a vampire who was turned by her lover so they could spend forever together only to be left in the dust by said lover, who eventually started spiraling into evil deeds, which caused Vivienne to have to run away because of her history with said ex making people believe she was tied to it (none knows they broke up after 180 ish years apparently), not to say she was a good person, she was definitely doing pretty bad things when they were together but it was also the 1800s and a vampire girl gotta eat yk? anyways shes the love interest for Alcina and she shows up at her doorstep bleeding out cause idk shes dramatic like that ig 😒/j
Milo (trans nonbinary), Aurelia's childhood best friend, a werewolf as well. they were both from the same cult and ran away together, who was also groomed by an older man who was planning on marrying Milo. although Aurelia gives off the older sibling vibe she is the younger one (they're not biologically related but they see each other as siblings) Angie tricks them into working for Donna who they quite quickly start crushing on (its very similar to the beginning of the Donna route)
I apologize if this is messy asf, in both the pictures and writing, It's currently 2 am and I am running on nothing but sheer stubbornness and ADHD hyperfocus 😭😭😭 this is also very brief, there's way more info about them if anyone would be interested in me going into a deep dive about any of them.
reminder that I do not believe in forgiving literal murderers irl, this is purely for the sake of fiction :))

SVSSS Selfcest Exchange Tagset Nomination Guidelines
Relationships
Only nominate relationships involving selfcest, including threesomes/moresomes. If you have an idea where a different romantic relationship is established or endgame during the selfcest, those can be listed in optional tags when you submit your requests and offers. Order doesn't matter for top and bottom preferences- those can be stated at signup.
All relationships should be in the following format:
For selfcest between the SVSSS version of a character/the PIDW version, use "Original [Character]": Six Balls/Original Six Balls
For a character you want to selfcest, but not with their PIDW version and not in a specific scenario, use "alt!Character": Wu Wang/alt!Wu Wang
For a character you want to selfcest in a specific scenario, with ONE general qualifier: omega!Die'er/alpha!Die'er; fem!Wu Chen/Wu Chen
Examples of possible qualifiers- what's important/interesting about these two versions of the character meeting?: Age- older, younger AU- historical, steampunk, modern Gender- (cis or trans) male, female, nonbinary, any other gender Secondary gender- omega, beta, alpha, non-omegaverse Sexual experience- virgin, experienced Species- demon, mer, alien, [insert any type of creature] Time- past, present, future Type- clone, fragment (based on a specific emotion or memory), dream construct, doppelganger (something Other- a wifeplot, a creature- pretending to be your character, a la find the shapeshifters plot in Dunmeshi), false (some other Person pretending to be your character and doing it well enough to fool them)
Other characters can also be added to a ship tag, provided it doesn't break AO3's character limit and at least one character is being selfcested: Zhuzhi-lang's mother/Zhuzhi-lang's mother/Zhuzhi-lang's father
Please do not nominate ships with multiple qualifiers or qualifiers from a specific AU (such as your own SVSSS Cars AU that you've written several works for, or someone else's highly specific bacteria!AU). You may request specific AUs during signup, but tags should be generic!
Examples of nominations that will not be accepted: fem!omega!demon!Ming Fan/beta!alien!future!Ming Fan username123's mer AU Ming Fan/username678's steampunk AU Ming Fan
Freeforms
Please keep freeforms generic- rather than "Bingge and Bingmei making out", use "A and alt!A making out" or "character making out with themself".
Freeforms can include other characters/ships as long as they are also generic, ex. "A fucks themself to spur their alternate self into doing something about their feelings for B".
Dead dove tropes are okay to include, but please note that twincest-as-selfcest ("AU where A and A are twins") is not allowed to be the sole focus of a prompt/work! For example, the above example (A and A are twins) is not within the scope of this exchange. However, “A and their twin A encounter an alternate version of A" would be okay.
