Is the so-called “nostalgia epidemic” among gen z just a result of the desire to live in a time when corporations didn’t control the internet nearly as much, when there were only 2-3 streaming services and they didn’t have ads, when teenagers weren’t expected to stretch themselves thin doing 10 million extracurriculars just to get into college, when buying a house was a reasonable goal, when beloved shows were given more episodes per season and weren’t canceled prematurely (nearly as often), when third spaces (i.e. malls) existed so that your friends could hang out together, when clothes were made higher-quality instead of fast-fashion, when…

suddenly it’s april and you’re still crying like a child, though you haven’t been small in a long time.

curled in on itself as if to force the body back to something simple, to the beginning, to where it made sense.

an ocean of yearning crashing against tired bones

i miss the person i was a year ago, a month ago, yesterday, before it all.

a melody of recollection ticking like a metronome

i miss my father as he sits across from me. there is an emptiness in the space between us that crept in while i wasn't looking.

a deep nostalgia for when my sister understood me, when we were girls together, the summer i turned 11 while the gash in my knee scabbed over.

please, let me go back. i want to sit in the sun again. i want to cartwheel until the world spins beneath my feet, until time stops moving, until my mother calls me inside for dinner and the streetlights blink sleepily to life.

i wish someone would have told me that growing up is just leaving behind ghosts of yourself over and over again.
