The work you do has to have a least something identifiable to to the original couple but also maintain Eddie and Chrissy. For example if you chose Elizabeth and Mr. Darcy from Pride and Prejudice: you could swap roles, and make Chrissy Mr. Darcy and Eddie Elizabeth (not necessarily a gender swap), you could even have them reading the book and it's a way they come together, or they're in the regency time and Eddie is Mr. Darcy who warns young Steve away from the clutches of the ambivalent Nancy.

You will have two full months to complete your work. All fic/art is due on 30 November 2023 and the first piece will be posted 5 December 2023.

summer frenzy accountability post

In the name of me having a lot of time on my hands for the next couple months + wanting to vary up my content here a bit... time to post the watchlist I hope to at least cull through if not actually finish all of. This is not in any kind of order and will be updated as I get through stuff, and also isn't all of my planned programming for the near future (there's also one movie I need to rewatch, a few others that will be totally new to me, and a book series I need to get through). The goal is to fall in love with things, write as much as possible, and have a good time.

Housekeeping notes: if a show name is underlined, that means I already have a ship tag for something / that's a link. If it is not, I'm still eyeing some obvious bait unless otherwise noted. I've at least kinda started watching most of these shows and in some cases the "currently on" is a guess because it's been too long for me to remember. Any commentary on why I should prioritize something on this list above the rest will be listened to but not necessarily followed. (There are several things that I dropped because the timing was wrong for me.) Again, not an exhaustive list but posting it anyways so y'all have some idea of coming attractions.

5. How do they sleep?

Fully think Eddie sleeps hot and it drives Chrissy crazy because she really likes to snuggle up under a blanket, and he's always kicking the covers down or off. She also likes wearing pajamas and he likes sleeping naked, not because of any latent prudery but because she has a fear of some natural disaster befalling them and her being naked when it happens.

19. What values do they not share? How do they reconcile those differences?

Oooh, this is a really good one. I think that for all they love each other, there are ways where Chrissy will always be a little out of touch with how Eddie views money/security, and Eddie will always be a little out of touch with how Chrissy's complicated feelings about femininity and sisterhood. Which, most of the time, manifests itself in squabbles about weird things, like his insistence on continuing to fix broken things well past the point of usefulness (where she'd rather just buy a new one), or her taking a long time to get ready/pick an outfit (he thinks it's a weird, vain holdover, but to her it's how she shows respect to the people she's seeing/hanging out with).

Politically, I think Chrissy probably starts out with some fairly conservative beliefs that she's never necessarily questioned, and gets upset when Eddie pushes her on them. Not because she doesn't agree--she does get what he's saying, and ends up angry about the same stuff he's angry about--but because it makes her feel dumb, sometimes, that she never bothered to think critically about that stuff before. Eddie, meanwhile, can sometimes be quick to react to situations with a temper, while Chrissy takes a bit more time to look for nuance and try to see both sides, even if she ultimately doesn't agree with the other one.

12. character i hate the most and why: IYKYK but they are a very boring and one-dimensional character that's just there to be fucking annoying, and they rightfully fucking annoy me, so I don't feel bad for hating them lmao. They just add nothing to the story. I don't care about their past because nothing alludes to it. Nothing would change if they weren't in the show, so when you couple that with being a nuisance, well.

13. something i've learned from the fandom: Love comes in many forms and from many places within oneself, which I knew in theory but never as personally as I've discovered through my Harringrove peeps, and I'm very grateful for it <3

However my least enjoyed characters are Nancy and Jonathan. I see a lot of my own family in them for various reasons and I just don't enjoy them. No hate though. I don't subscribe to the concept of vitriol against fictional characters or those who enjoy them.

Jason is a close runner up, but I don't necessarily hate him in any way but I just am uncomfortable with shipping him for myself. He's a great character and I truly wish I could enjoy him in fics.

13. something i've learned from the fandom: Mistakes aren't the end all be all of who we are. We make them and if we make up for them through action, then they don't have to define us forever.

4: Is there a popular pairing you don't necessarily dislike but aren't too invested in? (any fandom)

I think Stranger Things is perfect for this because there is no ship I necessarily dislike but so far I am only invested in Harringrove and Hellcheer but I still enjoy seeing these characters in different ships, a popular one might be Steddie. I like Eddie, I understand the vision, I don't really like or dislike the ship but there's super cool art for them I still enjoy looking at and also had fun drawing them a little! =)

8:How did you come up with the title to [insert fic]? -for Dancing in the Fire.

I was thinking of the way Ponyboy describes Johnny when they are saving the kids in the burning church, like he's having the time of his life, so I thought of it like he was dancing in the fire.. and it fit for Daniel coming to New York, aiming for becoming a dancer on Broadway but steps right into a gang war, kinda trapped between both sides and I thought this is a good title for the crossover since it refers to both characters who play a part in the story and are connected by literally looking alike! =D

AAA hi absolutely!!

A - Out of the fanfic you've written, which is your favorite and why?

Probably midwest monster of the highest grade. It was really fun to play with and I was (still am) so happy with how it turned out. I sometimes struggle writing from Chrissy's pov because I don't feel like I have as good of a grasp on her character as I do Eddie's so it was a fun exercise to sort of get into her mind and how she sees things and I love it. (I actually just reread it the other day and I really am so pleased with how their chemistry and her personality turned out.)

B - What was the first fandom you read fic in? Which was the first you wrote fic for?

Reading is definitely Harry Potter. I was big (like. BIG) into Harry Potter for most of my life and iirc I probably got into reading fanfiction through like. Quotev fics I found on Pinterest 💀💀

The first fandom I wrote for was either Harry Potter or Les Miserables I will go check right now. (Please hold!) Okay yes the oldest fic I can find in my drive is Harry Potter related (it's newt scamander x oc specifically). My middle school best friend and I used to write fic together so yeah. Good times! (The second oldest is from about the same time and it is les mis so I was correct lol)

D - What's the most personal fanfic you've written?

Hmm. A lot of the stuff I've written (until hellcheer ofc) was just self indulgent i've created this oc and i'm going to put her into situations because im a middle/high schooler with an overactive imagination and time to kill type shit so it wasn't necessarily personal (except in the sense that like. I wrote it).

I also wouldn't say that any of my currently published hellcheer fics are that personal (again except for that they're mine) BUT I do have one that I've been adding bits and pieces to since like 2022 that, if it's ever finished, I would possibly consider my magnum opus. That one dives really deep into both Eddie and Chrissy's lives and personalities and mindsets and everything and I have taken a lot of how I see things and my experiences and sort of used them as a jumping off point for that so I guess that one would be the most personal (even if it won't see the light of day for quite a while).

There is no such thing as embarrassing as far as music goes. All music is good music. That’s a person putting their soul out there… bitch.

Imagine bi4bi Hellcheer being together, but having an open relationship in the beginning to explore their sexuality. That would be neat. Like them going to a club and being each other's wing person. They're young, they're having a good time but they're also being safe. They don't necessarily have sex. Sometimes, they just dance with other people and make out a little. It freaked Robin and Steve when they brought them out to the club, and Eddie started kissing another guy. Chrissy had giggled.

"Oh, did we not tell you we have an open relationship?" Chrissy asked.

"No!"

"We do. We're having fun," Chrissy said with a shrug.

Robin told her that fun was something she was also looking for, Vickie needed some time after breaking up with her boyfriend. It was something they had both deserved, and Vickie hadn't wanted to jump right into another relationship, but she did like Robin. Robin had totally understood. They were young and survived the end of the world. Robin wanted some fun, too. Not too much, though. They watched Eddie practically grind on the guy he was dancing with, Chrissy and Steve being the only two to find it hot.

"I really didn't know that Eddie was into guys," Steve said.

"It's a recent discovery," Eddie said, coming back to the table.

"Did you have fun?" Chrissy asked as Eddie kissed her.

"Oh, I made someone very happy. He wanted to use me to make some other guy jealous, and I was happy to oblige," Eddie said, wiggling his eyebrows.

"You want to tell Steve and Robin what made you realize that you're bisexual?" Chrissy asked with a teasing grin.

Eddie groaned and hid his face into her hair. He was mumbling, and she giggled. He scowled mockingly at her as he straightened himself up.

"Fine. It was you, Steve, okay? It's your fault, though. You just had to rip your sweater off on that damn boat and throw it at me like a damn slut. I didn't think about when I threw my vest at you to cover up your tits but you looked even hotter with your vest on and fuck, that pissed me off. I mean, you're covered in grime and blood. How the hell do you still look hot?" Eddie rambled on.

"I could make it up to you," Steve said, leaning against the table. "We could have some fun of our own."

Steve drained his cup, slammed it down, and wiggled his fingers at Eddie. The metalhead grinned and took his hand, letting Steve drag him into the dance floor. Chrissy watched for a moment before turning to Robin.

"You want to have some fun?" Chrissy asked, and Robin nearly choked on her drink.

"Yeah, sure! You should know that I'm not graceful at all, and I was actually compared to a giraffe once. Which was hurtful but to be fair I did call Steve a moose first," Robin said.

"I love your friendship," Chrissy giggled.

"It has its perks," Robin replied.

Chrissy guided Robin's hips as they moved to the music. Robin was predictably awkward, but once she relaxed, Robin really got into it. She even kissed Chrissy first. By the time the four of them got back to the table, everyone's close were ruffeled, their hair a mess, and their lips were very swollen. They ordered more non alcoholic drinks and collapsed in their chairs.

"When we get back to Steve’s place, I'm totally fucking him," Eddie said.

"Okay, that sounds fun," Chrissy said and turned to Robin. "Do you want to fuck me tonight, Robin?"

"Uh, well, is it okay if I said I wasn't ready yet?" Robin asked.

"Of course it is. It's your choice, Robin," Chrissy said, kissing her and smiling sweetly. "I totally get it. When we get there, we can just make out and cuddle if you want to."

"That sounds nice," Robin said, blushing.

When they got back to Steve’s they did just that. Although, for Robin's sake, Chrissy moved them down to the basement as Eddie and Steve were very loud. There's no magical solution on how to deal with trauma. A lot of times, there's no solution at all. The only thing you can do is live your life. Sometimes you just got to dance, drink, or fuck it out. Sometimes, you happen to do it with your closest friends.

5. What’s a fic idea you’ve had that you will never write?

Ooh, so many! I love love love the idea of a 10 Things I Hate About You AU for hellcheer, but I don't think I'll ever write one (I don't think I can write an "it was a dare/bet" fic. too stressful lol). That's for somebody else to do!

11. Do you have specific playlists for writing fics?

Not necessarily. I have 80ish spotify playlists (4 of which are various movie soundtrack playlists with different moods). I'll just write to whatever playlist fits the vibe I'm going for in a particular scene, though I will say Ghibli soundtracks are one of my go-tos! Also Clint Mansell's Moon soundtrack. Occasionally, I write without any music at all, but that's rare

17. What’s something you’ve learned about while doing research for a fic?

I've learned sooo many weird things while researching (and promptly forgotten most of them). A lot of my hellcheer research is "was this product/slang/arcade game, etc. around in the 80s?" For instance, during the drafting of Galentines and Valentines I found out that cookie dough ice cream wasn't commonly sold in the 80s (if I remember correctly it had been invented but you couldn't just pick it up at the grocery store). Also, M&Ms did in fact exist in the 80s, but only the regular and peanut versions (this is for a wip that might never come to fruition, oh well). I usually have close to a dozen tabs open by the time I'm done writing a chapter!

favorite thing about them: the fact that he never gives up. He's way braver than he gives himself credit for, repeating senior year twice and multiple times choosing to fight while he didn't necessarily have to.

Eddie takes Wayne on a roadtrip "back home" to the south as soon as he has the money to do that, and when Wayne gets old Eddie and Steve happily take him in to have him live with them.

unpopular opinion: I honestly don't like anything to do with rockstar!eddie. I honestly think that would be very bad for him and a quiet, somewhat regulated life (with the band as just a hobby) would make him way happier.

least favorite thing about them: i guess his character development. sounds a bit mean maybe but he started out as a sweetheart and an extremely loyal friend, and over the course of the story he developed into a mopey teenager who complained about everything and treated so many of his friends badly (yes i know, he's a traumatized teenager, but as a character he's just not that compelling to me, sorry)

favorite line: "I only have like $3.50, so it's hard."

brOTP: is it bad that i don't really have one?

OTP: sorry bylers but i don't have an OTP for mike :/ i don't really have strong opinions about him and will together tbh. i care way more about El's and Will's storylines than about Mike's love life if that makes sense

nOTP: i really, really don't like him with El. maybe their dynamic was kinda sweet in s1, but i wanna see el grow into her own person and learn to value friendship over relationships.

random headcanon: when Nancy comes out to her family and Ted the Reagan Supporter™ is being totally shitty about it, Mike is the one who fiercely comes to her defense and keeps standing up for her. Underneath their constant bickering, they love each other so much, and he will always have her back.

unpopular opinion: i don't think it's super unpopular but he is very much NOT the heart of the group, like Will said. That's either Will, Dustin or Lucas, but definitely not Mike, who is actually responsible for most of their fights

11. Link your three favorite fics right now

Oh, this is hard because I don't usually read longfics in the genre where I'm writing longfics! So I've mostly been reading oneshots, and even then I've not necessarily been reading those in Hellcheer. It's a weird brain-melty thing where I can either read or write, but not both. The fandom I'm reading in mostly these days is Our Flag Means Death, and I've weirdly gotten back into Bethyl thanks to @pipergirl17 posting their fic + other recs.

13. what’s a common writing tip that you almost always follow?

My feelings on South Park these days aside, I have taken Matt Parker and Trey Stone's advice on "But... therefore..." writing to heart. Basically, any time you're outlining or writing and you're putting in an "and then..." beat, you should actually be doing a "but" and a "therefore" beat, because that will create the conflict that drives the story forward. They have some videos talking about it that make more sense than what I just said, but I'm always thinking about what I'm driving toward, which is a skill that has taken some refining. In my early fic days, I definitely just used to put those guys into situations, with no real plot or structure.

I also love the Stephen King advice: "amateurs sit and wait for inspiration, the rest of us just get up and go to work" which is what I tell myself on those days when I don't want to sit down and put words on the page. Which is similar to the Octavia Butler advice of "habit will help you finish and polish your stories. Inspiration won’t."

20. Have you noticed any patterns in your fics? Words/expressions that appear a lot, themes, common settings, etc?

An editor once described my writing as gentle grit, and I'm still not sure what she means, but I'll take it. I think, though, that there's an undercurrent of people trying their best, even when it's hard, and generally wanting to be better people. My settings are domestic, my themes are often found family and self-acceptance, and I have so many overused words and tropes that I could probably write a terrible short story using just the phrases I commonly string together.

21. Would you ever collaborate with another writer for a story?

Yes! I just don't know how, or who, or what makes the right kind of alchemy so that when you read the collaboration it is seamless and lovely. I have roleplayed for years, so I know the joy of writing with another person. Co-writing seems like a fandom secret I have yet to unlock, and I think probably that has to do with the alchemical reaction needed to be similar enough in style to produce something coherent, while also distinct enough to create some sparking friction.

I know when Hellcheer & Jancy get together they'll be good solid couples. But im also looking foward to some conflict within the relationships for some interesting character development. Would u say that Eddie and Chrissy are the passionate couple & Jonathan and Nancy are the mature, stable couple?

I think it depends on what you mean by passionate! Jonathan and Nancy are definitely the more mature characters, but that doesn’t necessarily mean they fight less. In fact, they butt heads quite a bit on the show, especially early on.

I’d say that they fight less often, but when they do, it can get intense and usually takes a few days for things to cool off. Eddie and Chrissy, by contrast, have more frequent but much smaller arguments that are resolved fairly quick. They have an agreement to never go to bed angry, whereas Jonathan has had to crash on Steve’s or Argyle’s couch once or twice because Nancy is giving him the cold shoulder 😂

my eddie will no longer be ship exclusive with @/reignedchime and their chrissy since moon is on indefinite hiatus. however, they will remain on my affiliates list for if moon decides to return. this also doesn't mean I'm necessarily looking for another hellcheer ship. if it happens, it happens.
