Understanding the Inverse Square Law

(Without Math)

When I was first getting deep into photography, I kept running into lessons about the inverse square law. They would always tell you the effects and the math but they never explained the cause. Why does the light do this?

It's like when the doctor gives you a pill to fix something. You swallow it, wait a bit, and eventually you feel better. But you rarely know what the pill is actually doing.

So when it comes to lighting, you have to decide if you want to be the doctor who understands the why or the patient who just swallows the pill and gets the desired effect.

Every tutorial will say if you double the distance of a light from a subject, the intensity will drop by 1/4. They will give you a formula so you can do exposure calculations.

Sometimes they will refer to somewhat helpful diagrams with clues on what is happening.

But most just teach the easy version.

If you move the light closer, you will get quicker falloff into shadow and the background will be darker.

If you move it farther back, everything will be more evenly lit, but the background will be lighter.

The teacher will shoot some examples and show you something like this.

By the end of this post, I want everyone who reads it to *truly* understand what is happening.

Because if you understand it on that level, it will change how you think about light and photography. It will have the added bonus of explaining magnets and WiFi and even the sound coming out of your speakers.

If I am an effective teacher, this is something you will think about in your everyday life, even if you don't care about photography.

In a previous post, I talked about how light was a bit like a shotgun blast. The closer you are, the more concentrated the pellets. If you are farther away, the shot disperses.

But this wasn't the analogy I wanted to use. It was just the easiest to find visual examples of.

My preferred analogy was spray paint. And I'm hoping with some janky home-made visuals, I can do a better job of explaining the concept.

Let's start by explaining the humble photon. It's the fundamental particle (or wave) of light. Think of them like individual tiny globs of paint in a spray can. A photon is emitted when something loses energy. And unmodified light sources typically shoot out photon globs in all directions.

A point light source is a theoretical concept where a single point in space shoots light evenly in every direction. For our purposes we're just going to imagine a basic light bulb as the point source.

But our eyes and cameras have a limited field of view, so from here on out we are going to think of the light emitting from the bulb as having a cone shape. We are just concerned with what a camera can actually see.

Well, well, well... what does that cone of light look like?

I'm sure we have all used spray paint before. So let's imagine we are spraying a white ball against a gray wall. We spray for 1 second and hold the can at different distances.

In each scenario we are spraying for the same length of time and the exact same number of photon paint globs are emitted from the nozzle.

Let's think about what each scenario would look like from the camera's point of view.

Here is our unpainted ball and wall.

Here is the spray can held at Distance 1.

Note how the red paint is very concentrated and appears bold and saturated.

Distance 2.

Now the same amount of paint is dispersed over a wider area. The bold red spot in the center is more muted. And some of the paint is spilling onto the background.

Distance 3.

Everything appears to have a light red tint. The background and the white ball appear to have similar intensities of red. The coverage is very even. The same number of photon paint globs are being asked to cover a larger area so they are spreading out and diluting the color.

Okay, now let's exchange tiny photon paint globs for real photons.

I'm bringing back my baseball and showing these same 3 distances.

The nice thing about eyeballs and cameras... they can compensate for different light intensities. Our eyes have night vision and cameras have long shutter speeds, large lens apertures, and ISO amplification.

And if we compensate for the dimming caused by the dispersed light...

Photography teachers will tell you that if you move the light farther away, the background will get brighter. In reality, everything is the same level of dim and the camera exposure is brightened.

What if we wanted to spray the same area from far away without losing as much of the red saturation? We could add a super nozzle to our spray can that emits a bunch more photon globs in the same span of time.

This would be like turning up the power of the light. You have to emit a bunch more photons in that same time scale to compensate. Then you don't have to adjust your camera settings when you move the light farther away.

Let's look at a practical example of when you might think about the inverse square law to help solve a problem.

You have two subjects in a scene, and you put the light just out of view of the camera. You might be thinking that a larger light source is softer, so you want it as close as possible.

Unfortunately only one person is lit in the scene. She is getting the concentrated photons before they can disperse.

So if we want both people to have similar lighting, we can move the light farther away. You will have to comprimise a little softness. And you will have to change your camera settings or increase the power of the light.

Note that the intensity of light in the area they are standing in is very similar now.

By using a large light modifier, the photographer was able to move the light back and keep its general softness, but also evenly light both subjects.

And now I need to talk about one aspect of my spray paint analogy that does not work with the inverse square law. And it has to do with the specular highlight on the baseball.

Spray paint does not reflect paint. It just sticks to things. And reflection throws a tiny wrench into my explanation. Because parallel light rays do not obey the inverse square law. When you light something, the most central photons from the subject's perspective are going to be traveling in parallel. They have a direct path from the light to the camera lens or your eyeball.

Now if the reflection material is perfectly matte, the light will disperse and act as the inverse square law suggests. But if the surface is even a little glossy, the most concentrated parallel rays are going to bounce directly into your eye as a bright white spot.

And if you study this diagram a little closer, you might figure out why specular highlights are usually white.

If you look at the specular highlight on the baseball, even though the rest of the image gets dimmer as the light gets farther away, that spot stays bright.

Though the spot seems to disappear at Distance 1. Curious, eh?

It's still there. It's still reflecting directly into your eyeball. But the light around it is so concentrated and bright, the specular highlight blends in.

Which means if you have some nasty highlights on your photo subject, moving your light closer might make them go away. If someone has a shiny forehead, this can equalize the overall exposure and hide the shiny.

This guy has a bright spot on his nose. It is there in both photos.

But his face is so much brighter in the left photo that the spot blends in. It's a bit of a mind bender because the camera exposure is adjusted so the finished photos appear the same amount of bright.

You have to remember if you only move the light farther away and don't increase its power or increase the camera's exposure level, the photos would look more like this.

So if you make the rest of the face as bright as the highlight, it blends in.

Neat!

So, was I successful?

Does the inverse square law make more sense?

This is why WiFi gets weaker at a distance. This is why magnets lose their attraction when you pull them apart. This is why speakers get quieter when you move away from them.

I can't tell you how much knowing the why has affected my thinking about lighting. I see so many video and photo people talking about lighting setups who are just following memorized placements.

"Put a light above the subject at a 45 degree angle to get Rembrandt lighting."

But the second they encounter light doing something unexpected, things fall apart. They resort to trial and error and brute force the solution.

Knowing how the pill works can prevent that frustrating process.

I no longer care about the math. I can just visualize the cone of influence and predict what will happen. Understanding the behavior of light and not just the end effects has made everything more intuitive. I just wish it hadn't taken me so long to understand this. But, hopefully, this post has shortened that journey for you.

You always loved baking. It was a childhood love that started with your parents and only grew from there. You used to do it for fun and for family gatherings, but when you were a teenager, you decided to start a small business. It allowed you to make a little bit of cash on the side and made you happy. Then, you started making videos and posting them to a YouTube channel.

When you announced that your boyfriend was Harry Lewis, most people thought you had met through YouTube since you both started around the same time and were from the same area. Little did they know that you two were literally neighbors. You were childhood best friends turned secondary school sweethearts. He was also your honorary test dummy. 

Anytime you saw a new recipe, Harry was there. Anytime you wanted to tweak something a little, Harry would try it. It didn’t matter if the batch was disgusting. Harry would still eat it. Even if you accidentally switched out the sugar for salt in your infamous chocolate chunk cookies, Harry ate it with a smile.

Recently, on a shopping trip, you came across an old bookstore and found an old cookbook. You looked through it briefly and ended up buying it because some of the recipes sounded amazing and weird.

"Hello, everybody, and welcome back to my channel. today, we are making a 200-year-old cheesecake,” You emphasized, gesturing to all of the ingredients around your kitchen. “I found this recipe book recently and thought it would be fun to try all of these out or let me know if you like this recipe and if I should make this a series.”

"Also, I’m here,” Harry interrupted from slightly behind the camera. 

“Yes, and Harry’s here, so I’m making him do things for me,” You smirked as you pulled him into the frame. “That being said, let’s get started! This is called ‘the fine cheesecake.’ Harry, how about you read out the first step?”

“Put a pint of cream into a saucepan over a fire, and when it is warm, add to it five quarts of milk, immediately taken from the…” Harry narrowed his eyes at the book before slowing down. “Where the fuck are we getting a cow?”

”See, that’s illegal to sell unpasteurized milk here in London, so we just have to use regular milk,” You laughed, already having read through the recipe and gone through the steps of buying the ingredients. “Want to mix this up and put it on the stove for me?”

“But that’s not a fire, now is it?” Harry said, pointing at the recipe, “You need to read this.”

”We don’t have a fire,” You rolled your eyes, “Unfortunately, we have modern technology, and we don’t exactly have the means to heat this over an actual fire. Moving on, add to it some rennet. Do you know what we’re making yet, Harry?”

”Thought it was cheesecake,” He grumbled, adding the rennet into the mixture, “It’s the only reason I agreed to help out.”

”That’s not the right attitude,” You complained, bumping your shoulder against his while you stirred the milk mixture. “Here, since you’re being such a downer, you can go make these macaroons by yourself.”

”No!” He whined, grabbing onto your arm, “You know I suck at making those! They’re so hard!”

”That’s what she said. Anyways, moving on,” You joked, not letting Harry make a comment further, “can you start whipping this with your arms for me, please?” You asked as you pushed the bowl of egg whites towards Harry.

”Don’t you have a mixer for this?” He spoke up but still took the whisk and began mixing. “I think that would be easier.”

”I do, but this recipe was made like 97 years before the electric mixer was invented,” You explained, moving on to the other step. “While he whips that to a froth, I’m going to grind these almonds and sugar together.”

”It’s not the only thing I’ll be whipping to a froth tonight,” Harry muttered directly into his microphone.

”I hope you know this is a family-friendly show, Mr.,” you side-eyed him. “Anyways, by the time these are all cooked, our milk should be solidified, and we should have cheese!”

”That’s what we were making?” Harry gasped in shock as he watched you mix the egg whites and the almond-sugar powder.

”What did you think it was?” You asked, genuinely curious.

“Fuckin cheesecake!” Harry shouted, walking off camera. 

“No, you need cheese to make cheesecake, dummy,” You laughed, pouring the now curdled milk through a cheesecloth. “Now, in an hour or so, we get to break down the cheese and macaroons into fine bits. I’ll leave this one to you.”

”Oh, yay, thanks,” Harry said sarcastically. By the time you moved to the next few steps, you were ready to make puff pastry. Only it didn’t sound like making puff pastry. “What the fuck is this?”

”It’s a very concise way of describing puff pastry,” You chuckled lightly. “Thank god I already know how to make puff pastry, or this video would not be posted.”

”Can I put it in the dish?” Harry asked, watching you pull out the completed puff pastry and rolled it out to the correct length.

”Yeah, just make sure there are no air bubbles or holes,” You explained as you helped him take the thin dough to lay it in the dish. “When you trim it, cut it so there’s a little over the edge so it can puff up. The sides and the bottoms obviously won't be able to puff up.”

“Oh please, I’m not an amateur,” He scoffed, immediately accidentally cutting a line through the side of the dough. “Shit.”

”And this is why I’m the baker,” You lectured, bumping him out of the way with your hip. “Now, we’re going to add the filling and put this in the oven. It’s a pretty basic cheesecake, so you could add chocolate or something to match your preference. I decided to drag Harry to a berry patch to pick our own berries as they would 200 years ago, so we could have the full 200-year-old cheesecake experience.”

”I may or may not have eaten a lot of those,” Harry admitted.

”I can’t have anything with this guy,” You joked, throwing your head back. “Anyway, wash up whatever fruit you have left and pile it on top of the cooled cheesecake! Harry will do the honors of trying this.”

”It’s really dry,” He said right after he took a bite.

”It is on the dryer side, so make sure you have some whipped cream or something to balance it out, but it’s definitely not your average New York Cheesecake. It tastes more like a ricotta cheesecake to me. I like it, but it definitely needs whipped cream or something,” You explained before setting your fork down and addressing your audience. “Make it a great week, everybody, and I’ll see you again next week.”

Your normal outro began playing, but just when everyone thought the video would end, there was an end scene of your outtakes with Harry. 

“My arm is killing me,” Harry groaned as he stopped whisking the egg whites for a second, looking over at you rolling and folding the puff pastry.

”Your arm hurts?” You replied in a condescending tone. “ I would kill to have one arm hurt! I’m hurting my entire upper body for this!”

“We can swap if that’ll make you feel better?” Harry offered, leaning the whisk against the side of the bowl to move behind you and wrap his arms around your waist. “We can also take a break.”

”No, the egg whites can’t be left for too long, and if I chill the pastry for too long, it will be even harder to roll out,” You sighed, leaning back into his hold and looking up at him. “Thanks, though. Let’s just push through it.”

”Okay,” Harry exhaled before dropping a kiss to your forehead and going back to the bowl. Just as he restarted whisking, he offered, “If you want to take a break, I can do both of these for a few.”

“As much as I would love a break, I need to stick this out with you.”

It’s been a minute, hasn’t it? Life got in the way and honestly, I’ve been taking my sweet time with this new build. It also didn’t help that the Sim File Share site kept giving me errors whenever I tried to upload it and I was supposed to post this last month.

Even now, I’m still dealing with errors on the site and after some frustration, I’ve decided to look into alternative sites for uploading content in the future. But after all the setbacks, it’s finally ready!

This clinic is designed to give a real-life feeling of visiting a healthcare facility. Inside, you’ll find a: reception area, consultation/exam rooms, pharmacy, laboratory, x-ray/radiology, restroom, locker room, staff break room, doctors office and a large empty room for the rabbit hole rug/door. Now, a couple of things to keep in mind - the layout is designed with a small staff in mind but you can use the extra space in the second floor, where the rabbit hole rug/door is placed, if you want to add more offices or any other services. Just make sure that there is enough space for the rabbit hole rug/door to avoid routing issues. I had to get creative with the signs for this build as I couldn’t find anything that felt right or any CCs that matches the layout of the clinic so I made my own directory signs. It is included in the download file and I’ve posted the details along with this post as it is an add-on for the clinic. I’m using a font called Simlish Deja Vu by gazifu@MTS for the signs and I’ve also included translations in the picture above. It’s not perfect but you know what? It does the job! I have also placed a big sign shown on the clinic that translates to 'Pharmacy' and I know it might seem a bit out of place but honestly, it’s the only large sign I liked that fit the building aesthetic I was going for. 📣 Please note that the CC included in the lot are not included on the download file. I’ve compiled a list for those interested in downloading them separately (please click the links above or go to WCIF Navigation page) but those are not required and will be automatically replaced in the game. Okay finally

Small lighting tutorial (very long post, lots of images)

First of all I work on PS but if you have basic knowledge of your program of choice this will be easy to follow.

Second I use a different layer for everything. So assume that each screenshot is a new layer.

Third I've seen people not knowing how to choose colors for light and shadow and for me it comes out naturally so I don't put that much thought in it, but picking the neighboring color in the color wheel never fails, so lets say you use a red for the lighting, then pick either orange or pink for the shadow. The shadow should be fairly desaturated. However if the lighting is the desaturated you can go wild with the shadow saturation. But this is subjective and it's very dependent on your goals and art style.

Okay let's start:

Line art

Base color

Now for the shadow layer. The layer blending mode is in hard light mode

I use the quick selection tool on the previous base color layer, and in the new shadow layer with the hard light mode set I fill the selection with the paint bucket tool.

The lighting layer is on the linear dodge (add) mode.

I use the lasso tool to select the lighting parts, then I fill it with paint bucket tool.

Then once I have everything, I use the quick selection tool on this lighting layer, and in a new layer also on linear dodge mode I use a radial gradient, drag it from the direction of the light source, you have to try it out on it's own but it usual takes me a couple of tries to get the desired intensity.

Also tbh you can just leave it like that no gradient, if pure cel shading is your goal.

I add all the extra shadows, this layer is also on hard light mode, I use the lasso tool and a normal round soft brush.

This next part is something that I sometimes do and sometimes it's not necessary, in this case since the light source is moonlight the light on the clothes should bounce off on the face so I do an extra gradient. (or just do this if you want to make it lighter lmao)

With the quick selection tool, I select either the base color or the shadow layer, and in a new layer with the linear dodge mode, I use a gradient, it has to be either a fairly dark color or a very soft gradient.

And lastly in a new layer, with linear dodge mode I use a soft edge brush on top of the lighting areas, to give it that glow.

Sometimes, like in this case, I have to use some color balance adjustments, more contrast or brightness.

hi anon! i'd be happy to share how i coloured that scene for this gifset, just keep in mind that this was my first attempt at this scene and i'm always tweaking my colouring!

the channel mixer is you best friend for these kinds of scenes, and here is a helpful tutorial explaining how to use it. i like to think of it as taking the colour of the tab and "pushing" it into the colour of the sliders (so if you're in the red tab and increasing the green slider, you're "pushing" red into the green areas of the gif).

under the cut i'll explain the major steps that helped me get the colouring here:

these are my regular colouring steps, which i'll be mostly following and referencing throughout, but with some tweaks.

Prepping the scene

i start with a blank brightness/contrast layer set to 'screen' to brighten up the shot

then i use the curves layers i mentioned in my colouring tutorial and use the white and black eyedroppers to select the brightest and darkest green pixels in the scene. this brings out some of the blue.

Channel Mixer

now i use the channel mixer to do some heavy lifting. these are my settings but play around with them until you're happy. i started by reducing the green, and then adding back red and blue.

Adding brightness

now i use another blank brightness/contrast layer set to 'screen' at 50% opacity, and use the second exposure layer, levels, and brightness/contrast layer from my colouring tutorial to brighten up the scene.

Channel Mixer 2.0

now as you can see the scene is still pretty green, so i add a second channel mixer layer with these settings:

Color balance and hue/saturation

i do my color balance and hue/saturation steps as described in my colouring tutorial, with these settings:

Selective colors

now it's just a matter of using your selective colours to add back warmth in the skin tones. i use multiple selective color layers and adjust the reds, yellows, and magentas to get the skin tone to look better (6 layers for this alone). i also adjust the cyans and blues to get the lights and uniform colours the way i want them. and i end off by adjusting the whites/neutrals/blacks to get some more brightness and contrast.

i've explained my reasoning in how i use my selective colour layers in my colouring tutorial.

Final Touches

i use the same final layers as my colouring tutorial, ending off with an auto curves layer at 25% opacity which leaves me with the final colouring i obtained here:

gojo once got your hair stuck in a brush because he was too focused in watching the tutorial, and he contemplated chopping your hair off. but you threatened him, and so he spent approximately one and a half hour to untangle your hair.

after that day, he never tried a new hairstyle in fear of doing something wrong again. but he still and does play with your hair, twirling it around his slender fingers and caressing it — sometimes he helps you with drying your hair after a shower, and he helps on your hair care routine.

the male looks intrigued by your hair care routine, toji would always be there to watch you put care into your hair. sometimes offering to do it, and when he messes up he asks you to take over because he was scared of ruining your beautiful hair.

"ah, shit. i can't do it baby, you take over." he mutters out in annoyance, sliding the hair tonic over to you after failing to pump in the right amount of liquid into the pipette from his strong grip.

the male looks up hairstyles and sends the link to you, asking: "can you try this hairstyle, wanna see you in it." and is never disappointed with the result.

he makes himself the small spoon so your hair wouldn't get in his face — not that he's complaining, he likes being held by you.

"what're you doing, toji?" you asked in confusion, seeing the male curled up in bed.

"being the small spoon," he mumbles out.

CHOSO KAMO. he is the best at doing hairstyles, especially pig tails. choso is so delicate with your hair, treating every strand like they're his own. and he was the first one to offer to do your hair when he sees you slightly struggling with trying out a new hairstyle.

he would be independent to look up new hairstyles and come to you, asking if he could try doing your hair.

"hi y/n," he appears behind the bedroom door, peeking slightly with a small smile, "can i do your hair?"

when you tell him yes, he gets so happy and skips on the bed. telling you to sit down in front of him while he follows the tutorial patiently — and when he's done, he's always giddy to hear your reaction to his work. such a cutie.

"cho, this looks really pretty, thank you," you kissed his forehead, and the male shyly smiles at you.

choso sees you putting on a lot of things on your hair after a shower and he began looking up hair care routines on the internet, how to do them step by step, remembering everything so he could be the one doing your hair care routine for you.

"baby, baby! i wanna do your hair care routine," he tells you, tugging your hand with a smile on his face.

you, of course, let him. trusting him with it — and choso delivers perfectly, doing the steps you usually do with the right amount of things. it makes him really happy when you tell him thank you and awarded him with a kiss or two.

Multiple MC's/posing tutorial:

Since people ALWAYS ask, and no one ever gives an in depth description on how to use all these mods I thought I would go ahead and make one! It always feels like everyone is gatekeeping their methods but really it's just a lot to explain and no one wants to type all that out so....

Anyway! Here's how I added multiple MC's into one shot and posed them all pretty!

1. You need the following mods:

2. Once you have all of the mods working you will start out making your mc into the first character you want added to your picture using the character editor mod, then get the outfit you want on etc. (You cant edit it once its out there so get it just right)

3. Youre going to use UE tools to duplicate your MC. press f10 to pull up the command bar and the in: "uetools_summon bp_biped_player_c"

(without quotes) Exactly like that then hit enter.

4. You should now have a second copy of your character hanging out by your original one. Now press f8 to open the animation mod, it now moves the most recently summoned mc instead of the one you are controlling. Use the postion and animation settings to move them where you want and find a pose you like. You won't be able to edit them once you summon the next character so make it look pretty!

5. Once you have posed your character, repeat steps 2-4 until you have posed all of the MC's you want. You cannot pose NPC's, but with other mods you can make an mc of them!

BONUS:

For the lighting, you dont have to wait around all day for the sun to light you up just right either. Type in "uetools_setworldsettings timedilation 20" to make time fast forward until the lighting is just right, then type "uetools_setworldsettings timedilation 1" to put it back to normal.

If you want to take a pic at night you can spawn a floating light source with the command "uetools_customlight pointlight 100 180 true"

This one you will want to mess with and practice with first. The first number where i have written 100 is a number representing the intensity of the light. 100 is very soft. The second number where i have put 180 is how spread out it is, so making it bigger will cause it to effect a greater area. Where it says true - that is what determines whether the light source you add will cast shadows. Type false is you dont want them - i usually do. The light spawns right in the center of your characters body, you will want to set custom lights up before posing any characters. Just walk around and spawn them, use "uetools_ghost" to let you fly in order to make yourself go higher or lower to change where you place the lights and then type "uetools_walk" to walk again. Custom light usually only shows up at night but in extra shadowy areas it works fine.

Sorry that was so long winded, I hope it helps someone! Doing the poses takes a really long time sometimes but its still fun to me lol

The green brochure provides absolutely no help to your questions, only informing you of the best restaurants and cringeworthy picture poses that will make your future children slam the photobook shut in disgust.

It's still early and things are unpacked. This calls for a celebratory nap.

What time is it? You blearily reach for your phone, trying to read the bright screen through squinted vision. 1:18pm. I guess it's time for lunch.

At the dining hall with your full plate of food in hand, you scan the area for free tables to sit at. That person over there with the super straight posture and dark black hair seems so familiar. Is it someone from high school? College, maybe?

Oh. It's Zayne Li from maths class in high school.

To or to not approach him? It looks like he came here alone, it wouldn't be nice to ruin his alone time. If he did come here alone, at least there would be one familiar face in this massive resort. Fuck it. I have nothing to lose.

“Excuse me, do you mind if I sit here, Zayne?” You cautiously approach his table, hoping mentioning his name would get his attention.

“i'm sorry, how do you know who I am? Have we met before?” He looks up from his plate and tilts his head to the side, patiently waiting for an answer.

“We have actually! Sorry, I should have introduced myself earlier. I'm ___. We were maths partners in the last year of high school. Is this a bad time?” You explain; hoping that he will let you sit with him as you feel the weight of the tray slowly becoming more heavier in your hands.

Zayne stares you you for a few seconds on silence. “No, it's not. Please, sit down.” He gestures at the seat directly opposite him and you smile at him before placing your tray down on the table.

You pick up a piece of meat and place it on top of your spoon before placing it in your mouth. Zayne hasn't changed much. He's still the quiet and observant guy from all those years ago.

“How are you, Zayne? What have you been up to all these years?”

“I have been quite busy up until recently. The hospital director has forced me to go on an all inclusive holiday.” The dark haired man replies before picking up a spoonful of rice.

“Hospital?” You repeat in surprise. “Did you actually become a doctor?”

The man in question nods his head. “I have been for a few years now. I would have preferred to stay at the hospital especially during the winter holidays as it becomes very busy. However, the higher ups at the hospital say they see me too often to be considered normal so they paid me to have a break for a while.”

“That’s great! I can tell you're extremely passionate about your work but hopefully this break will give you the rest your body needs.”

Silence. 13 seconds of silence. Well this is awkward.

You drink your fizzy lemonade as a way to think of more things to talk to the man about, before he runs off and you lose the only familiar face here. “I actually came here alone. This was actually kind of a last minute decision and I have no plan of what to do. Do you know where you can rent out equipment and book an instructor?”

“You can go to the building next door for the equipment.” He paused. “For the instructor, I’m not quite so sure. I would assume you would be able to ask the people in the same building where you rent out your equipment. I don't think many instructors would have much availability though, since you mentioned this was a last minute decision.”

“Thank you Zayne! If I’m unable to get an instructor I’ll just go through some tutorial videos tonight and start from there.” You reply, drinking in more of the fizzy lemonade.

Zayne’s eyebrows furrowed in confusion. “You’re just going to watch some tutorial videos and hope that everything will be fine in the morning?”

“I know it doesn’t sound ideal, but I am a hunter.” You shrug your shoulders with pride. “If I can get through the association’s hunter training, I think I can get through some snowboarding.”

“Really?” He asks and you nod. “Then you shouldn't call for me when you manage to injure yourself. After all, your amazing self- help videos should tell you what to do.”

“No problem! I’m sure that other people passing by would help me if they see someone in trouble.” Zayne’s mouth opens and closes but nothing comes out. “Let me help you, ___. I can snowboard quite well, if I do say so myself. Besides, the people who come to help you whilst you are injured may not be healthcare professionals, let alone doctors.”

You frown. “I couldn't ask you to do that, Zayne. I have already ruined your meal by barging in here. I’ll be fine, I promise.”

“I insist. It would make me more stressed to know that the only person I know around here could be a threat to herself and it would take me longer to get to you.” I can’t go out and stress this doctor anymore, can I?

“Fine.” You give in. “But only if I get to buy you desserts in return. If you still like them, of course.”

“It’s a deal then. I need to go get my coat first. Meet you at the reception of the building next door for the equipment?” He asks and you nod, watching him leave the dining hall.

With equipment sorted out, you and Zayne make your way to the ski lift. You watch as other people get on the lift and do the same when the next one approaches you. “How long have you been snowboarding for?”

“About ten years. My parents would often take me to places like these when they weren't working.” Zayne replies, staring at the trees in the distance. “It’s almost time for us to get off. Be careful.”

He gets off easliy and you get off too, almost tripping over your feet in the process. Unsure of where to go, you follow Zayne like a lost puppy. Children’s zone. You read the massive arched sign in front of you.

“Zayne, I’m going to learn how to snowboard in the children’s zone?” You ask the man, looking up at him through your goggles.

“Yes. I know it might be a bit embarrassing, but I can assure you it’s a lot more safer to learn here instead of being with more advanced people who could potentially barge into you.” He says calmly as you walk together towards a calmer and quieter area. “First thing to learn is your stance.” Zayne demonstrates the proper stance and silently gestures at you to copy him.

“Like this?” You ask as you look back at him, trying to match your stance with his.

He tilts his head to the side and slowly moves in front of you. “Not quite. Bend your knees a bit more and keep your back straight.” You do as he says but his brows still stay furrowed. “Do you mind?” You shake your head no and he moves towards you. His hands gently fix your posture as you look to the side. “Your head has to be facing forward.”

You face forward and make eye contact with him. Wow, he’s really close. I never realised he had such pretty eyes. His lips are so pink, one wrong move and my lips would be on his.

“Much better.” You hear, and your eyes are back on him again. Zayne doesn’t step back. You notice the tips of his ears turning bright red. Why has it suddenly gotten so loud? There’s barely anyone here apart from me and Zayne. The Zayne whose face is super close to mine. Seriously, what is that loud sound?

Why does it feel like I’ve ran a whole marathon? I’ve barely done anything. My heart feels like it’s going to beat out of my chest. My heart- OH. Zayne is the one making my heart beat like crazy.

“Sorry.” Zayne coughs and steps back. You let out a breath you didn’t even know you were holding.

“Next thing we need to learn is how to fall safely. Before you say anything, I'm sure you already know how to fall safely from a height but this is different. This is on snow, ___. Please don't let your confidence get the best of you.” I see Zayne has already noticed my concerning confidence.

“Well done. Should we end the session here?” Zayne reaches out his hand for you to pull yourself up from the snow.

“Yes please, I feel like you have made me fall safely on my snowboard enough to do it perfectly in my sleep!” You say, grabbing his hand and brushing off the remaining snow on your gloves.

You both make your way to the ski lift and make your way down, saying nothing to each other.

“I guess I’ll see you tomorrow? Does 10am work for you?” Zayne asks as you get off the ski lift.

“Thanks again for agreeing to help me, Zayne! Yeah, I’ll see you tomorrow!” You reply, waving at Zayne before walking off in different directions.

Walking to the bakery, your nose gets filled with the wonderful scent of freshly baked pastries. What would Zayne like? He mentioned he still likes desserts so... something super sweet.

You walk up to the counter and smile at the worker in front of you. “Can I get a box of macarons please? Could I also get two slices of the strawberry cake as well please?”

“That will be 8.50 please.” The worker says and you scan your card on the machine. The worker quickly boxes up your desserts and you thank her before walking back to your room.

As you walk through the hallway, you see a very familiar face walking into the hallway. One that has helped you with your snowboarding skills over the past three hours.

“Zayne?” You call out to him, and he turns his head. “I was expecting to see you tomorrow but I guess I can give them to you now.” You hand him the box of macarons.

“Oh, thank you ___. I was just going out for dinner. Thanks to you, I don’t need to go to the bakery to pick these up.” He smiles widely, taking the box of macarons from your hands.

“Enjoy your dinner! See you tomorrow!” You say, your hand ready to put in the code to your room.

“Are you not going to eat dinner?” Zayne asks and you hear a small hint of sadness in his voice. Is this sadness of his from me not eating dinner? Or is it because he’s eating dinner alone?

“I’ll eat later, Zayne. I’ll let you have dinner on your own after I stormed in on your lunch.” You respond.

“I wouldn’t have mentioned dinner if I wasn't interested in eating alone. You can have dinner with me. Only if you’re comfortable with it.” Zayne replies and you smile at him again.

“In that case, I’ll have dinner with you then Zayne! I’ll just put this in my room and I’ll be right out.” You point to the box filled with your cake slices and quickly open the door and place them on the table.

“Let’s go?” You ask as you close the door behind you and Zayne leads the way.

You and Zayne are neighbours now.

I slept so well last night, but why do all of my muscles suddenly get so weak in front of Zayne?

“Last thing I’m going to show you today is an Ollie. First, scoot the board and flex your back leg. Next, pull your front leg up whilst you spring off your back foot, then flex both your legs and land with your feet.” Zayne explains and demonstrates.

“Got it.” You say, mentally going over the steps.

Scoot the board and flex. Easy enough. Pull the front leg up and spring off the back foot and flex both legs. Land with your feet. Success! “Zayne!” You shout. “I did it!”

You make your way to Zayne, with a proud smile on your face. “Are you proud? How did I do? Did I look cool?” You bombard him with questions, feeling the joy flow through your body.

“Very proud. You did great, your form is extremely impressive for a beginner and you looked very cool.” He says, removing your goggles for you.

“Wait, why are you removing my goggles? I need to practice more!” You ask in confusion, looking up at the dark haired man.

“You did so well, I think I’m going to have to take you out of the children's zone and into the beginner zone now.” You gasp.

“This calls for a celebration! Let’s go!” You lead the way, not looking back to see if Zayne is following you.

“I seemed to have missed something. I understand we are celebrating, but the beginner zone is in the other direction.” He points to the large sign.

“My amazing achievement calls for a break. In fact, the whole day off kinda break!” You turn back and grab Zayne’s wrist.

“Where are you going to take me?” Zayne chuckles at your antics.

“We’re going to go dog sledding of course!” You say and you continue stringing him along.

You find yourself sitting in the reception of the activities centre, impatiently waiting for the musher to call out your names. “Aren’t you excited?” Zayne teases, taking notice of your restless hands.

“I’m so excited! I literally sit, do nothing and there are a bunch of huskies within arms reach. What else could a girl want?” You chirp. “What about you, Zayne? Are you excited?”

“Very excited, even though it doesn't quite look like it. Animals aren't very fond of me but hopefully today will be different. I’m also quite looking forward to the scenery, although I’m not sure we will be able to see it very clearly since the dogs run extremely fast.”

New mission acquired: get the huskies to love Zayne.

“Zayne and ___?” An unfamiliar voice calls out and you jump out of your seat, quickly making your way to the musher. “Nice to meet you guys, I’m Jeffrey, your musher. The dogs are right outside and are very eager to meet you.”

The musher leads the way and you soon find yourself standing in front of ten enthusiastic, loving huskies.

“They’re extremely sociable and love getting pets. They also love treats too.” The musher holds out a bag of treats and shakes it, causing all the huskies to snap their heads towards Simon. “Here are some treats, they love food.” Simon gives you a handful and you pass some onto Zayne.

A husky quickly makes their way over to you, trying to press its nose between the gaps of your fingers. “They’re so adorable!” You exclaim, giving the husky a treat.

“This one over here is Cinnamon.” Jeffrey says, pointing to the husky in front of you.

“Hi Cinnamon!” You call out in a high pitched tone. “Your name is almost as cute as you!” You still have a mission, ___. Get the huskies to love Zayne.

You scour the area to look for Zayne, realising it's way too quiet. Huskies are crowded in a circle, patiently waiting for pets but you are still unable to find Zayne. It's only after one of the huskies makes their way over to you is when you realise that Zayne has been the centre of attention this whole time.

Mission complete!

Zayne sits on the floor, quietly petting each husky in turn and giving each husky an equal number of treats. You quickly grab your phone and take a quick picture. One husky cuts through the petting train and fully launches itself onto Zayne, licking his chin.

Jeffrey laughs. “And that one over there is Marshmallow.”

Zayne sits down first in the sleigh and you sit next to him, feeling his body warmth in this cold weather. You look to the front and see the leading dogs jumping up and down, clearly more excited to start moving than you are.

“Zayne look at the cute doggie in the front! Its tail is moving like a metronome! It’s so cute!” You squeal, pointing at the dog with the fluffy excited tail.

“That’s Mochi, he has so much energy he ran into me and almost knocked me over.” Zayne smiles. “He reminds me of Pie.”

“Pie? I remember you mentioned Pie quite a bit when we were in high school. He’s an arctic fox that lives with your grandparents right?” You try to recall those memories from the back of your mind.

“I’m surprised you remembered.“He paused. “These huskies have so much energy and are so happy go lucky, they just want to be constantly looked after. It's adorable, really.”

“Hold on, you never showed me a picture of Pie!” You exclaim.

“You never asked for a picture.” Zayne answers coolly. “I can show you once we finish this tour. If that still doesn’t satisfy your overwhelming desire to see Pie, you can meet him in person.”

Meet Pie in person? Is this Zayne’s way of suggesting that we go on future trips together? Including ones that have me meeting his family? Calm down, ___. You’re just overthinking things now.

“Let’s go doggies!” Jeffrey shouts, and the dogs bark loudly before they start running.

The sleigh starts moving and you feel the wind flow through your hair. Zayne taps your shoulder and smiles. You smile back.

You thank Jeffrey for a safe ride and wave goodbye to the huskies, hearing them whine loudly in response.

“I think I’m going to book a session with them every single day until I leave the resort.” You say, and Zayne nods, practically dragging his legs on the ground, clearly sad that he had to leave the dogs.

“It’s okay Zayne, I heard there’s a cat called Toast that hangs out in the reception that absolutely loves getting attention. Hopefully she’ll be there to say hi to us.” You really hope she is.

To your relief, Toast was lounging around on one of the tables in the reception. Zayne’s expression instantly softens and the sad Zayne disappears. He puts his hand out for Toast to sniff and she happily presses her nose against his hand. Zayne doesn’t move even an inch, afraid that Toast would suddenly want alone time.

Toast was the one that broke off the relationship, jumping off the table and aimlessly walking around the reception. “Let’s go?” You cautiously suggest and Zayne doesn't look upset, happily smiling to himself as you make your way to your rooms.

“I’ll see you at the same time tomorrow?” You ask and Zayne nods.

You wave him goodbye, opening the door and you plop onto the bed, letting out a short squeal as your legs kick the air.

He can’t keep doing this to me, first he makes me think that he wants to go on trips together and now he is an animal lover? My poor heart won't be able to take this much cuteness. How on earth am I going to sleep peacefully tonight?

“Since we had the most adorable break yesterday and you have proved your capabilities,” Zayne says, moving backwards so he can face you directly and points to the large sign in front of him. “Welcome to the beginner zone.”

“It’s so much more crowded here, and the terrain looks a little more difficult too.” You look around, noticing the increase in instructors helping their students.

“It is, but you have done extremely well so you don't have much to worry about.” Zayne says reassuringly.

“Ready to get started?” You nod in agreement. “How about you show me an Ollie?” Zayne eagerly ready to watch.

You perform all the steps correctly, but you notice how it has become a little more difficult due to the different terrain. Nothing much to worry about.

“Perfect. Are you ready to learn something new today?” Zayne asks as you move towards him and you immediately agree, ready to feel the joy flowing through your veins after nailing a move for the first time.

“I’m going to show you how to do a J- turn today. First, glide forward and the weight on your front foot needs to be shifted to your toes. If you do it correctly, the weight shift should turn your board and you will be moving in a J- like shape, hence the name J- turn.” Zayne explains and demonstrates, silently waiting for you to do the same.

Glide forward. Shift the weight from the toes to your front feet. Wait, that’s not right! You suddenly feel a wave of panic wash over you. You’re not in the easy children zone anymore either. I’m going to fall. I’m going to fall in front of Zayne and look like an absolute idiot. Shit, this is not going to look pretty.

You see Zayne’s blurry figure in the distance quickly becoming more clearer as you snowboard your way to the death of your well curated image in front of Zayne. What a pretty face. Never going to be able to look at his face without feeling embarrassed ever again.

No, you still have a chance to save yourself, ___! Fall safely. How the fuck do you fall safely?

Whilst your mind is spiraling from thoughts of falling and looking like an absolute idiot in front of Zayne, you suddenly stop moving and crash into a soft pile of fresh snow.

How did that happen? Has all of the snow on earth collected itself in order to protect me?

“Are you okay? ___!” You hear a familiar voice call your name from afar.

God? Is that you? I have seemed to have died in front of Zayne and he’s never going to emotionally recover from this. Zayne, I’m so sorry.

“Are you okay? ___?” You hear Zayne’s voice, clearly sounding very frantic.

I’m alive but I have still managed to emotionally scar him.

“I’m alive.” You open your eyes to see a very distressed Zayne, his goggles removed and his hair swept to the side.

“Do you feel any pain?” Zayne asks, afraid to touch you in case of injury.

“Physically, no but my pride is.” You reply and hear him sigh a breath of relief.

“I’m glad to know that your humour still remains intact. Come on, let’s get you up.” Zayne outstretches his hand.

You prop one hand on the floor and the other grabs his hand. “Ow!” You exclaim, feeling a minor pain from your wrist.

“Sit back down for me, ___. Is it your wrist? Your ankle?” Zayne’s commands gently and you oblige.

“My wrist. The rest of my body is fine though.” You say and Zayne suddenly moves in front of you and sits down.

What is he doing? Is he mad that I hurt my wrist and is throwing a silent tantrum like a toddler?

“What are you waiting for, ___? Get on.” You hear, Zayne's voice slightly muffled. A piggyback ride?

“Zayne, I’ve only hurt my wrist! Don’t you think this is a bit overkill?” You question the man in front of you.

“No. I see this as a way of preventing any future injuries.” He sounds serious. I guess he’s in doctor mode.

“Okay, I’ll get on.” You comply, holding on to him tightly. “Zayne?”

“Yes?”

“I didn’t even fall safely and I wasn’t even thinking straight. How did I just suddenly stop moving? How on earth am I still in one piece?” You ask, hoping he has the answers.

“How else do you think the pile of snow magically appeared in front of you?” He replies and suddenly, everything clicks.

He used his evol to create a snow pile so I wouldn’t badly hurt myself? You feel blood rushing to your cheeks, feeling very grateful that Zayne wouldn't be able to see your tomato red face.

You sit in Zayne’s room, watching as he grabs his first aid kit out of his suitcase.

“Zayne,” You call out. “I’m fine, I just sprained my wrist. I just need to put on some ice and I’ll be fine.”

“I’ll be the judge of that, Miss Hunter.” Zayne says, sitting down next to you. “You sprained your wrist, which clearly means you are not fine. The sound of velcro breaks the silence in the room. You focus on Zayne, who is cautiously puting the splint on your wrist without trying to make you wince from the pain.

He looks so angelic when he’s focused.

The sound of velcro being fastened suddenly stops and Zayne looks at you. “How can I look angelic to you when I have caused you pain?”

Fuck. I said that outloud? Refusing to say anything, you look to the side, trying to count the number of trees that you see in the window to get your rapidly increasing heart rate down.

“Please ___, look at me.” Zayne pleads, and you slowly turn your head, preparing yourself for a soul shattering rejection.

Zayne's smiles when you look at him and you finally make eye contact with him. “You look like a lovesick puppy, Zayne.”

“Would it be okay with you if I was your lovesick puppy?”

Your brain short circuits.

“Yes please.” Your heart starts drumming loudly in your chest as you realise that the Zayne Li has just confessed to you.

“Can I kiss you?” Zayne asks quietly and you nod.

Zayne closes the distance and you allow yourself to be absorbed in the moment. Your heart races as your heartbeat rings through your ears. Zayne's hands delicately trace your back and find their way around your waist, pulling you in closer. His touch is ever so gentle, afraid that one wrong move will cause you to shatter like glass.

You pull away from him, as the need for oxygen overwhelms your lungs. Zayne’s warm hands gently presses against your cheeks and he brings your face up to his, placing a soft kiss on your forehead.

“If your hand ever gets too heavy from wearing your splint, I can hold it for you.” You proceed to shove your face into his chest.

It’s been a year since you have reunited with Zayne at the Linkon ski resort. What better way to celebrate than by going back to where everything started?

You stand in the beginner zone, feeling anxiety wash over you, wondering what on earth made you think it would be a good idea to potentially give yourself a concussion.

“Zayne?” You call out to him.

“Yes?” He turns around and upon seeing your worried expression, he pouts.

“Do you think I’ll be okay? Do you think I’ll be able to get the moves right this time? If I fall and pass out, please take me to the hospital.” You ramble, looking up at him with pleading eyes.

“I’ll be here.” He squeezes your hand reassuringly. “Besides, the last time you fell I saved you. I can save you over and over until you get up on your feet again.” You smile at him, instantly feeling assured. “I’ll go first.” He says, smoothly making his way down the slope.

Glide forward. Shift the weight from your front feet to your toes. “Zayne! I’m doing it!” You shout cheerfully, proudly waving at him.

“Don’t focus on me, you’re losing your balance!” Zayne shouts back.

Well fuck me. I guess I’m falling for you again Zayne.

You fully accept your current situation and close your eyes, waiting for the snowboard to stop as you put your trust in Zayne. You suddenly stop moving, but you don’t feel the snow greeting you with its coldness but rather a pair of welcoming arms.

What? Has my pile of snow magically transformed into a human? A snowman with human like body temperature perhaps?

Fluttering your eyes open, you see Zayne and he relaxes his shoulders in relief. .

He actually caught me?

“Zayne!” You scramble out of his arms in anger. “I didn't think you were going to literally catch me? What you did was so dangerous! What if we both got hurt?” You exclaim, giving the doctor a lecture and childishly refuse to look at him.

“I know, I know.” He surrenders. “In the moment, it seemed like a good idea. I’m sorry darling, it won't happen again.”

“I hope you mean it Zayne. I would much rather you freeze me and carry me away to a safer place before unfreezing me.” You say and Zayne chuckles.

“If you insist.” He takes your hand and he gently rubs circles on the back of your hand. ”The one thing you should take away from this experience is that you have learnt that I am a man of my word.”

“Thank you for catching me.” You whisper.

“Of course darling. I told you that I would catch you if you stumble and fall.” Zayne delicately removes snowflakes in your hair and you rest your head on his shoulder.

Hooooo-boy okay let’s see here

Anatomy is a very wide subject and theres a lot that goes into it so I’m just gonna go over a few things I see people needing help with often. First the shapes, I usually go with something like this before making lines around it (the lines are the sketch two usually where I make the anatomy looser and more fluid)

Here’s a quick map out of the difference between two different characters of the same gender, in the picture you can see some notes I’ve left as body types can differ a lot, these are quite similar but despite being similar still having differences based on habits or routines like cana’s drinking or natsu’s workout routine. Now these are heavily based on my opinions and also my version of dragon slayer anatomy so bear with me.

Humans are not the same and while people always talk about same face syndrom, same body syndrom is very much a thing aswell. For this id recommend looking up certain things the character your drawing does and looking if it would have any specific effect like; drinking being able to cause weight gain.

Now for using the shapes in different poses you actually have to move the pieces and dependent on how it’s moved it changes things quite a bit. Especially in the neck and chest area. I’d recommend looking at pictures of how the neck and collarbone area shifts and changes because it’s quite fascinating to see how muscles can differ in looks and how they can squish and raise causing different looks.

Human anatomy varies a lot and it’s a shame one can’t find much good references around, if you have any specific questions regarding anatomy I could try going into more detail though I’m afraid I might have to pull up my physical art as my digital anatomy is quite stylised haha

Remember while learning the fundamentals is amazing, it’s okay to break the rules for an art style (will look better usually if your consistant and don’t go back and fourth with it)

Now for a random tidbit section

For more bodies with body fat (mostly seen when wearing a bra or anything similar) you can often find a fold of sorts under the female chest area, likewise the may also be found a more sharp bump on skinny bodies aswell, for the skinner one instead of fat, the bump is part of their bone structure that is shown. That can happen in multiple places and is more visible in places that store less fat.

Speaking of bonessss, hip dips! AND I’m gonna say it off the bat, MEN CAN HAVE HIP DIPS TOO!! Stop letting women be the only ones 🙏 we need more of them for everyone.

Anyways hip dips are caused by the shape of the pelvis and the way fat and muscle are distributed around it, some people have more pronounced hip dips, while others have less noticeable ones. So let’s get some viarity guys!!

Of course! I kind of just wing my drawings, so it's mostly guess-work and just my guts telling me it looks good enough. Nevertheless I'll try my best to explain my process :)

Tutorial under cut!

Let's first talk about the basic types of lines and techniques! :0

There are three types of lines: single, double, and triple. The number of lines will dictate the line-weight and thickness! The more lines there are, the thicker the it'll look. The same applies for how far apart these lines are. We'll talk more about this later.

Now that we know our lines, let's learn how to use them.

Usually when I draw, converging, irregular, and overlapping lines are the most common. They're all very similar, you'll see. Standard lines rarely ever come up. Standard lines are classic doubles lines that are perfectly parallel to one another, and that's very hard to do unless you use specific tools (poly-line tool, bézier curve tool).

So, let's stick with our imperfect, irregular lines and look at this drawing.

You can see a fuck ton of examples of converging, irregular, and overlapping lines here. For example, the face stands out a lot more than the hands behind it, doesn't it? That's because the face is largely composed of closely packed together, overlapping and converging lines. Meanwhile the hands are mostly further apart doubles lines, or single lines.

It's okay if you don't see it, there's a lot going on in that drawing. Let's check out some simpler, hopefully easier to see drawings!

In the first picture, you can clearly see the converging/overlapping lines on the torso area of the hoodie. BUT you can also clearly see the separated double lines on the sleeves. The same goes for the circled areas in the second pic. You get what I mean now?

Irregular lines can also be used to represent shakiness, or general unsteadiness, like in this doodle below. You can see the "nervousness" being shown in the shaky, irregular lines of the speech bubble.

Converging lines can work especially well for folds on clothes, as well as semi-double lines.

But having double lines everywhere can make it a little hard for the eye to pick out shape and detail. That's when reinforced lines come in clutch (featuring @die-06 OC, Finley Albatraum :)

Just look at how much of a difference it made! Simply by outlining the outer edges of the most prominent silhouettes, I was able to add a bit more depth into the drawing.

Another fun little fact about double lines is that you can color in between the lines!

In this collab art I did with @froyocorp (featuring her OC, the Scavenger), it's a little hard to tell but I did the full drawing using the most standard lines as I could and making them as parallel as I could. In between the gaps of the lines, I filled it in with neon pinks, greens, blues and yellows to add a little more color :)

DIY Twinkle Toes-style shoes

If you’re a 2000s kid, you might remember twinkle toes. They were very popular in my gradeschool, and I owned a pair when I was around 8, which happens to be around the age that I regress to. Unfortunately, they do not make these in adult sizes, but I still wanted a pair, so I decided to make my own.

Disclaimer: while this is an age regression and dreaming blog, it’s best if you make these while in a big headspace, because of the delicate details and materials required for the project.

With that out of the way, let’s get into the tutorial:

To make these you will need:

One pair of basic canvas sneakers with the laces removed

Glitter shoelaces

6mm rhinestones

Nail glue

Masking tape and sticker paper

Scissors

Pencil

Paint brushes

Fabric paint

Tweezers (not pictured)

The first step is to tape off the area around the rivets where the laces go like this:

This ensures that you will get a clean line. Now, if you are using dark shoes like me, you’ll want to paint this area white so that the color you choose to color it with shows up brighter.

If you’re using light shoes, you can skip this step.

Now, choose whichever color you like, and paint over the area with it. If you want the fabric paint to dry faster, you can use a hairdryer.

When you’re done, it should look something like this.

Now, you can create designs on the rest of the shoe. I like clovers, so I decided on a clover motif.

Draw the design you want on the sticker paper like so:

And then cut it out from the inside. this will be your stencil. Paste the stencil wherever you want on the shoe, and then paint inside of it like you painted around the rivets earlier. You can also write words on the shoes.

Now for the part you all have been waiting for: the rhinestones. Using tweesers, take eache rhinestone and dip it in nail glue. Then place the rhinestone onto the white part of the sneakers like this:

When you’re done, they should look like this:

Now,once the glue is dried, you can lace them up with the glitter laces! I put beads on mine.

Ta-daaaa!!!! You’re done! I hope this tutorial can find the people who wanted a pair but never got one, or just would like to wear them again!

I beat Pikmin 1 in 9 Days

Okay, so first off, that's not /that/ big a deal. It's not a tie for the world record or anything, however it is, as far as I know, the quickest the game can be beat without exploiting any major glitches.

I purposely went out of my way to do this run without researching the optimal path because figuring out everything myself was fun. Pikmin is one of my favorite games of all time and I usually replay it once a year

So, now I'm gonna go over that, what my process was, and do so in a way you'll understand even if you haven't played Pikmin.

So first, let's disect what those days actually mean. The time limit for the game is 30 Days, in which you have to collect 30 ship parts. Days themselves are 13 minutes and 30 seconds long in Pikmin 1.

There are 5 areas in the game, so naturally you'd think, "Well, can't you just do it in 5 days then? Finish each area a day?"

And that's a blatant 'No' (at least without glicthes)

Day 1 must always be spent in the Impact Site for the tutorial. Here you will get 1 Part and 25 Red Pikmin regardless of how good you actually do. There's another part here, but both yellows and blues are required to get it.

Meaning that 2 Days must already be used to get 1 part each. When you mix this with the final area, it means 3 days of this run have to be spent wasting an entire day on a single part. Meaning the other 6 is where we have to get the remaining 27 Ship Parts.

Day 2 is also very limited in what you can do. You have to break down a wall and build up reds while doing so which already takes more of the day than you'd like.

Now in a normal run, this wouldn't be a big deal. I'd build up reds, get Yellow Pikmin, build them up and get at least two parts.

However that's a colossal waste of time in this run.

The Forest of Hope (where you go in Day 2) has 8 ship parts. So you'd think. Okay, build up yellows and reds first day there and then the remaining 5 parts or whatever wouldn't be hard to round up in a second day. That sounds like you're making good time, right?

Well, you need to have 5 Ship parts to unlock the Third Area (The Forest Naval)

And you need the Blue Pikmin found in The Forest Naval to get all the ship parts in the Forest of Hope.

So, during this first day where you're already rushed due to building up 2 types of Pikmin for the first time. You need to collect at least 4 parts, or else this easy 2 Day Area will have to a 3 Day Area with alot of time wasted on two of those days.

I won't go into too much detail because routing what parts to grab, while very fun, probably won't be the most entertaining.

What's important is I was able to get the 4 parts in a single day there. Meaning 2 days in, I could already go to the Forest Naval.

Day 3 the hope is to get Blues as quick as possible. I usually like to lure the Breadbug near the Blue Onion because that's the easiest time to kill it for the ship part and then it won't get in the way.

Now the Naval has 9 Ships parts in it. Meaning you probably wanna do one day that's building blues and getting parts near the base, making sure you take care of walls and bridges to the best of your ability. Which is exactly the approach I took. And fortunately this area took the least practice for me to do.

I got a good first trip run pretty fast, which just left.

Day 4 has 5 Parts remaining, which is alot. Especially since two of these were busses while others were kinda long puzzles needed to do. But, I believe it just took me two real attempts before I was able to just do so. Meaning on Day 4, we've completely our first of the 5 areas.

Day 5 and Day 6 you can either go back and finish the Impact Site or finish up the Forest of Hope. The Impact Site is nice because it's just a single part, and as a result you can build up all your Pikmin types, meaning from this point onward you don't need to worry about enemy corpses and growing Pikmin. You'll have enough to finish the run.

And the Forest of Hope's 4 parts are easy to finish up as well now that we have Blue's.

Day 7 is where this gets TOUGH. The Distant Spring is by far the most difficult area in the game. It's really the only bit in this game where I tend to lose Pikmin to any meaningful degree during casual playthroughs. Wollyhops are annoying to deal with, Spotty Bulbears are BRUTAL and there's a ton of them over the map. Swooping Snitchbugs and Burrowing Shearwigs really make it hard to leave Pikmin unattened unless you're confident. And it has 10 Parts for you to get. Going into this I wasn't sure if I'd be able to do it in 2 days and I shot for 3.

At first, I was only able to get 3 parts in a day, and even that took alot of work, mostly working on the ones in the open water area near base. However after realizing how I was almost able to get the remaining 7 on the second trip, I decided to try again, just shooting for 4 parts and one of the puzzles done so all I had to do was carry it back the next day.

And, I got 5 Parts in a day! The 3 in the water behind base and then two of the closer ones. This and I had managed to destory every wall on the map which would make my next day way easier

Day 8 went smooth as a result of Day 7 going so well. There were some parts where Wollywogs have to be gotten through, but both of those are an ease. Then the far side of the map with the puzzle where you have to use Candy pop buds to make Blues Yellows and then Blue's again. Which is unfortunately time consuming above all else and ruined a few of my runs when I was trying to do 7 in a day.

But that's manageable, just leaving a boss fight you have to do with some reds. That for me isn't a problem.

However the only big Pikmin loss this playthrough did occur as the red Pikmin carrying the treasure back woke up a Spotty Bulbear and they all died.

But even with that hickup, the day was finished with time left to flower some reds to make the final day even easier.

Day 9 is anticlimactic. This is just an area (The Final Trial) with the final Boss in it and a single ship part. There's an easy puzzle I optimized my ability to do quick for no reason, then it's a matter of using Bomb Rocks to Stun the boss, followed by attacking with Reds. The day finishes with basically half the time left, it's not a challenge whatsoever, more of a victory lap.

And that's that!!!

Pikmin 1 is one of my favorite games of all time and I've played it so much since I was a kid (this was done on the Switch version, thus why only 3 playthroughs have been recorded. Launch Playthrough, mine earlier this year and then when I decied to do this)

And it felt really nice to optimize myself and go through, and not look at any speedruns or take advantage of any glicthes.

I can't speak too confidently, but I think 9 days is the lowest possible amount without taking advantage of any major glitches. Since Days 3/5 areas need to be completed in 5 days. Just leaving The Forest Naval and Distant Springs where you could theoretically do them in one day. But given the size of each area that sounds near impossible (I'm sure I've already been proven wrong by a TAS)

Point is, I feel good, and it felt nice to do this with one of my favorite games

ive struggled with art block for years and feel very discouraged because im already 19 and feel really behind so many people. im really stuck and dont really know what to do to get out of it and try and improve. as an amazing artist, do you have any tips on how to kind of start from scratch? like how do you learn ... stuff

I’m really sorry that you feel stuck, it’s not a pleasant feeling and I’ve experienced it myself many MANY times. First, let me preface, that your age is not that important. I’m turning 26 in a couple of months and I know there’s still SO MUCH I can improve on, I know artists who are younger than me and can do breathtaking art. I also know artists who didn’t even start drawing at my age, who started drawing a little later in life because they felt like doing art. So, who are you competing against? Why are you competing? Is self expression not goal enough? I’m not a professional artist, I don’t want to adhere to some industry standard, and most of all I don’t want to feel behind in an area that is so, SO personal to me.

Now, to the feeling stuck part. I’d love to say that in art, you’re always improving. Well, it’s not exactly the case. There are artists whose work doesn’t change for years and they feel content in what they do. Are they stuck? Not really — they feel fine. When you feel stuck in your art, it means that your brain has caught up to your physical ability and went beyond, it starts seeing flaws you haven’t noticed before. You’re very young still and have PLENTY of time to work up the pure handcraft of visual art. What I recommend is, start analysing what your hands are doing. Find an artwork in which you admire the skill of the artist and try to replicate the way their brushstrokes or lines work. Find a screenshot with really good colours and try to make little thumbnails with the colours and the shapes that you see. Don’t go for actually replicating screenshots, define a goal and don’t worry about the rest. If it’s the creative part you feel stuck on, my go to advice is always — stop and take a break. Go outside and look at your surroundings. Watch a movie, go down the rabbit hole of YouTube tutorials on how to restore a night stand (not obligatory), go to your local museum and just. Look. Let your brain wander in how beautiful mundane things are. How pretty are the faces of the people on your bus. Love what you see and with love comes art.

Now on to the learning part. This one is way less poetic because, well, the theory behind art is an academic field and I’m not an expert in it. There is a sea of decent art tutorials on YouTube, ranging from colour theory to multiple point perspective. If you have an artist who’s very skilled and happens to have a YT channel, watch them and really think about what they’re doing and why. I can’t stress this enough, if you want to actively learn something, you have to watch critically. If you have any spare money, you can invest in an art basics course too, god knows my brain expanded 40 times when I finally attended one, and I’ve been drawing for years before that. If you don’t have the finances for that — don’t worry. First, learning is a process and attending a class just sometimes accelerates it. Second, attending a class later in life does NOT mean you missed an opportunity. Rounding up, outside of any means of formal education you can still learn some useful things. Start with the basics, with the “boring” stuff (and I use parenthesis because drawing boxes is really fun actually), with “how to draw a straight line and what is line weight” and not “upper limb anatomy” or “advanced colour theory”. You’ll get there eventually, I promise. Just like I mentioned all the way in the beginning of this awfully long reply: it’s not a competition!

Dream has been working really hard lately, and Hob notices him absently massaging his stiff shoulders. So what does any good boyfriend do? He looks up massage therapy video tutorials and buys massage oils with calming properties.

When the weekend comes, Hob tells Dream that he wants to give him a full-body massage, and Dream bluescreens at first because his mind is living 24/7 in the gutter when Hob is involved. 😂 But as soon as Hob explains, red-faced, that the goal is relaxation and stress relief, and look, he even bought some lavender massage oil--

Dream falls in love with him more. 🥰

And like, Dream does go to chiropractors occasionally, but having his lovely boyfriend spend his free time learning massage therapy, buying massage oils, and dedicating an entire weekend afternoon just so Dream could feel better??

(They get sidetracked for a while because Dream has to show his appreciation first with ten thousand kisses and a schmoopy make-out session filled with 'I love you's and 'you're amazing's and 'I'm so lucky's.)

Anyway. 👀 Once Dream is dressed down (naked except for a medium-sized towel covering his pelvic area), Hob has him lie on the bed face-down, and starts massaging him beginning from the top.

Hob is very focused in his task. He's an academic at heart, so you know he took notes and dragged Jo and Ric to review his skills until he's deemed good enough. (Ric is very thankful for Hob's shoulder massages because life as Jo's manager is very stressful. 😂)

Dream is horny, of course he is, but his boner surprisingly takes a back seat as he lets Hob do his thing. He's a natural at this, and Dream feels very lucky to have such a thoughtful, caring boyfriend. 🥰

When Hob gets lower, though, he starts to become a blushy mess. He often clings to Dream when they have sex, and he remembers quite vividly some of the times when his nails would leave red marks on Dream's body, but especially on his back when Dream fucks him into the mattress.

Dream goes to do that without complaint, feeling relaxed and even a little sleepy. But then he sees Hob's flustered face, and him squirming when Dream slightly flashes him for a second while adjusting his towel, and it has him alert and wide-awake in 2 seconds flat.

And now Hob has to massage Dream's front while having Dream looking right at him, knowing exactly what's going on inside his mind. u///u)

It's a very tension-filled hour. Because while Hob is adamant to finish the job as professionally as he could, Dream has no qualms showing off his oiled body and asking Hob to massage certain areas more, like his pecs, which has Hob straddling him if he wants to be able to massage them properly.

So we have Dream, eyes dark and intense, and Hob, biting his lips hard so he can focus on his task instead of being reduced to a horny mess, because this hot guy he's currently straddling is in fact his boyfriend, and they could stop at any point and just go straight to fucking if he just says the word.

(Hob isn't going to say the word because he's the one taking care of Dream for once, and a relaxing full-body massage is something that Dream actually needs.)

He knows he has to face Dream again, and he has to remember to ask him what he thinks. Was Hob's kneading too rough? Too gentle? Maybe there are areas that he didn't pay enough attention to?

just in time for Halloween, I have finished: A SPOOKY CUSTOM PAINTING!!

well the timing was a coincidence but MAN, this has been a BIG project and I'm so excited to have one complete -- as you can see from my off-hand here, this is map art!!! I kept having the thought "wow I wish minecraft had more paintings" and then realised.... maybe i could make this happen....... process under the cut!

I really like the sort of ambiguous, compressed, pixellated look of a lot of the 1x1s and wanted to try to mimic that, so I designed this by making a simple drawing in Map Art Safe Colours, shrinking it down to 16x32, and then converting it to Map Art Safe Colours again to get the final picture I'd be making (and also adding a frame, so it'd look like a minecraft painting):

I was trying to stick to a flat map (i couldnt find any tutorials for staircasing that weren't just "and then plug it into a schematic program," and I wanted to try to do this by hand), which meant my palette was SUPER limited, probably the most difficult thing about creating this; there were a LOT of previous attempts that just didn't have enough colours available to let them shrink nicely. BUT THEN IT TURNED OUT the palette I was working from was accidentally all the LIGHTEST shades rather than the middle shade SO I HAD TO LEARN TO STAIRCASE ANYWAY

For anyone unfamiliar, the way the "shading" works on maps is that a block has a middle shade if it's the same level as the block north of it (flat), a lighter shade if it's taller than the block north of it, and a darker shade if it's shorter than the block north of it -- so in order to get a whole section to be The Same Lighter Shade, each "line" of the section must be taller than the previous one, leading to a staircase effect.

in order to make a 128x128 area into a 16x16 pixelart, each "pixel" is A FULL STACK of blocks in whatever colour, so HUGE shoutouts to @corruptedendermachine and @inkcryptid for gathering all these blocks for me! BOO MINED A TRULY TERRIFYING AMOUNT OF TERRACOTTA LMAO. And thanks to maf and @tinfoilsnow and phos for building the block-catching area underneath, and helping me tear the first map down to build the second piece!

While tallying up blocks, making a paint-by-number-looking key for myself to reference, putting out a Needed Materials List, and of course actually creating the art all took additional time, I put out the materials list and a call for help with block-gathering in mid-october... this took only a couple of weeks to build??? Admittedly I was VERY excited and focused on it haha.

I'm hoping to make more of these... there are two more designs included in the Needed Materials list that we just need to finish gathering blocks for, and I've made a few new designs utilising the Whole Palette now that I feel pretty confident that I understand staircasing, which I still need to tally up blocks for... so we'll see if I can pull those off!!
