👻 ghost: can you tease some wip ideas that have been haunting you/something you want to write in the future?

Okay so my whole thing is that I have chronic and continuous brainrot in regards to Ares and Viktor. Specifically their time together. Which means, while yes, Ares is dead in the main WIP, I do have so many notes about their time together. They are the OTP of all of my OC ships.

Basically their whole history and their intersections with Leo from Sacrificial Lamb as well as Julius. Just the Cardinals in general have been itching at me very much. Like they were basically their own little found family of sorts who were super protective of each other who had a terrible fallout after their Captain dies.

Similarly, I have ideas for the three ex-military men as well as Ophelia who is more of player in Leo's storyline (they're the one m/f ship that I really do enjoy). Which involves Cato coming back from the dead to go home, Julius dealing with the fact that Cato comes back wrong and the three trying to fix their relationship again. Which then brings up another WIP.

Namely, the existence of Lucas Liu who's a detective who has his storyline in parallel to Viktor's. Also is the one who actually gets Leo to open up again after Sacrificial Lamb. Which also means that Sebastian and Orion are also a thing, specifically Lucas is trying to catch Sebastian to prove himself while dragging Leo around for the ride. That means Sebastian's whole crew also exists and they have their own story.

So... you can see that I have many WIPs who grow on top of each other... There is just, so much to explore in the universe (mainly the city itself) which doesn't even include the ones that happen outside of the city itself. Such as my professor/student ship (Yang Fu and Hugo Wright) that happens a couple hours outside of the main city so they aren't even impacted too much by the happenings.

And there's the most disjointed little story I have about an obsessed artist (a director) and his muse who are off doing their own things. Riley and Jules are busy trying to learn how to communicate through the arts while shit is hitting the fan around them.

tell me about Hugo I dare you

From my powerpoint of my more fandomy OCs (again under the read more lol)

Unlike Ethan who wishes to try hard to please his parents, Hugo knows that to his family, he will amount to nothing. 

More likely to kick around the bush when talking and has a bit of a habit of never quite getting to the point. Having a hard time reading social cues also makes this a lot harder so no talk is best talk

The idea of becoming everything his parents aren’t; to be someone who cares is something he clings onto even if it’s far easier to become more cruel (there are times he wishes he could turn his back) 

More of an analyzer because it fundamentally gives him control. Characters are static whereas people change and can turn on a dime. 

Very used to being the black sheep of the family and acts very flippant towards them

Respects Ethan’s family as his own in a sense, feels like he’s the reason why Ethan loathes them

The only reason Hugo even graduates is because Ethan insists on studying together. It’s a kindness that he can never repay, rather to him, Hugo feels as though it is a debt he needs to repay. 

Not exactly resentful of Ethan as much as he’s jealous. Hugo wishes his family cared about him to do the best. To his own family, he may as well be invisible. Better to be nagging in concern than to say nothing at all.  

Ethan jokes about him playing Hamlet in their school play and he does actually get the role; mostly thanks to them working together to understand the character. Hamlet isn’t his character, it’s theirs in his opinion.

Is he joking? Is he being serious? One can never quite tell from how little he talks and how he talks. His ‘oh that seems manageable’ sounds like he’s lying and telling the truth at the same time.

Characters: Technically all on-page characters are OCs; Valjean, Cosette, Marius, and Javert are discussed as historical personalities. Backstory Cosette/Marius and heavily implied Valjean/Javert.

Summary: Euphrasie Pontmercy–known in the art world as La Jardinière–isn’t exactly a household name. Still, the sheer length of her active career (her work was first displayed and sold in 1839, and she left one last work unfinished at her death in 1910) makes her interesting to people who actually study that century in art. But as far as the historical record is concerned, Jardinière seems to have sprung semi-fully-formed from the streets of Paris somewhere in the mid-to-late 1820s. Other than the fact that she was educated in a convent, essentially nothing is known about her parents or her childhood.

I spent most of that weekend, while I was waiting for Emma--my thesis advisor--to get back to me, pulling together everything I had on hand about La Jardinière and figuring out my next steps. I don’t think I slept for like forty hours.

Unfortunately, what I had on hand wasn’t all that much. I’d done some basic research into her--like I told Phil, the fact that her career lasted as long as it did made her interesting to me. My focus had more been on the relationship between technology and art (and not just the basic stuff, like the advent of photography, but things like changes in travel and communications technology, in available pigments, and so on), but a painter with a seventy-year career, including most of the period I was interested in, was definitely at least worth looking into.

Still, it had only been a basic overview, not much more than you’d find on her Wikipedia page.

Well, actually, it kind of was more than you’d find on her wiki page, which is pretty sparse. Just covering the basics, noting that she: was born around 1815; died September 18, 1910; was married to Marius Pontmercy, a lawyer and sometime radical; and was the mother of Thierry Pontmercy, a pioneer in the field of forensic photography, along with his four less-famous siblings. Also the fact that her work was first displayed and sold in 1839, and her last piece (Souvenir--inachevé) was left unfinished at her death; although her popularity peaked in the early-mid 1850s, she continued to be reasonably well-respected as an artist throughout her life. The entry also lists a couple of her other better-known works. And that’s about it.

To be fair, that isn’t all that surprising. Because the truth is, Euphrasie Pontmercy--known professionally as La Jardinière, and apparently to her family as Mémé Cosette--isn’t exactly a household name. Even as far as mid-19th-century/pre-Impressionist painters go. Some of that comes down to the way art is studied, and the way the various art movements of her century worked. Some of it is that she wasn’t a major player in any of those movements. And probably general background misogyny plays a role.

There’s also the fact that there is next to no information available about her early life. As far as the historical record is concerned, Jardinière seems to have sprung semi-fully-formed from the streets of Paris somewhere in the mid-to-late 1820s. But I wanted to have all my ducks in a row, so to speak, before I talked to Phil’s parents about borrowing the painting (and in case I needed more support to sell Emma on the idea). So, compiling what information I had, and making a list of things I’d need to dig more into.

Jardinière spent, as far as current research can tell, her entire life and career in Paris, apart from the eighteen months she and her husband spent in Dover in the 1860s (most likely because his politics got them into trouble), and the approximately two months in the early 1850s she spent in Calais without him (reasons unknown).

Her work is mostly landscapes--several paintings of gardens, appropriately enough, as well as various parts of Paris; the seascapes from her Dover period are particularly beautiful, even if fashions in the art world had generally turned away from landscapes in that period. There are also a few portraits, some commissioned and some apparently just of ordinary people in her life; and a series of works she referred to as memories, depicting places or events she had lived in or witnessed years before actually sitting down to paint them.

Some of her sketchbooks also survive, including one from Calais that has several pages missing. Most of her paintings are marked on the back with the subject and a date (generally assumed to be the date she completed the work), like the one in Phil’s living room was.

If you line up her paintings chronologically, you can see her style shifting a little, drawing in bits and pieces from new movements and artistic fashions while still remaining recognizably hers. Especially when she comes back to locations she’d already painted years before--which she did repeatedly--showing the way both she and her city have grown and changed over time.

Even more interesting, while not all of her personal correspondence is available, there are a few surviving letters she exchanged with notable artists, particularly in the last few decades of her life. There’s one letter she wrote to Toulouse-Lautrec, which was briefly quoted in a biography of him I read a few years back.

I made a note to try and get my hands on the whole text of that letter, among others, if I was really planning to do a deep dive into Jardinière’s life and work--even if it was from fifty-some years after the painting at the center of all this. I’d also need to find someone who could help me translate it, and any other papers I managed to gain access to. My French is decent enough, and I’d probably be fine communicating with French institutions and archivists in order to request access to their collections, but for something this important, I’d want someone way more fluent to help with the actual documentary evidence.

Next was a list of museums that had some of her work on display or in their collections; there was also an exhibit in Marseille that I wanted to look into--not Jardinière’s work, but ‘Bertillon and Pontmercy: The Men and Minds of Early Forensic Photography’ might include some relevant things from her son’s life and papers. Given that I’d almost certainly end up flying to France anyway, it would be stupid to skip that.

So. I had a game plan, or at least the beginnings of one. Start by reaching out to various archives, here and in France, possibly England as well; look closer at her work where I can find it, particularly her early work and the few portraits that are available--although the fact that her poetically-named final work was currently included in a post-Impressionist exhibit in Chicago definitely caught my eye. And then go to France, to look for other documentary evidence. Try to identify Papa and J-----, and, assuming I manage to do that, write about it. Fill in the gaps in a story that might not be interesting to everyone, but for the people who were interested, it mattered a hell of a lot.

All of this, of course, rested on gaining access to Phil’s parents’ painting, and proving it really was an 1834 Jardinière.

Hopefully he was right, and his parents would be easy to get on board.

But I sure as hell had to try.

The Truth and What Remains: An Adrinette Fanfiction by SnivyLord

Louis, for the majority of his life, has never met his dad Adrien Agreste. Louis had wondered for the 15 years of his life who his dad was and why his mom, Marinette Dupain Cheng refused to go any further than what limited information he has. Oh man, I technically have so many... Jay you are letting a bull loose in a China shop with this question so I'll put it in the read more. Gonna mainly focus on the blorbos that I favour for right now:

Sebastian Wei - Seemingly confident and arrogant with a habit of making choices for everyone else rather than listening to them. He doesn't quite speak in double speak but is still slippery if you attempt to make a verbal grab. Also a superb con man. Long black hair, and clever hands, overall unreadable eyes; usually wears suits.

Adrian Hong - Quiet and a man of patience, Adrian keeps to himself and does not contribute to situations unless the situation calls forth. More on the tall side and moves more akin to a cat, always surveying for potential danger. Childhood friend of Sebastian's. Their relationship? It's complicated.

The following two are from my english project that I might expand on? (I love them)

Ethan Xiao - A determined young man who is dead set on proving something to his parents. If they are happy, he can rest. Ethan's much colder to people yet louder at the same time. There's one thing he excels in and it's running away from his problems.

Hugo Wright - Despite having the last name Wright, Hugo isn't one who's always in the 'right'. Much more of a rebel against his family in general - you could say he loathes them but it's complicated. He wants to make a life for himself, one where the opinions of others don't matter.

DOCTOR WHO - UNBOUND OC: NORA TERENCE WRIGHT

Nora Terence Wright (face canon of the singer and actress Amber Gray) is born on 08th May of 1967, in the english city of Bristol.

Her mother, Edna, is a seamstress who camed from Ethiópia. Her father, the late Terence, was a construction worker from Ireland.

Recently formed, with great supporth (and pressure) of her mother, in Library Science, Documentation and Human Resources Management, Nora is starting to work in a job on the Bristol Central Library.

In the year of 1997, a few months after the anexation of Hong Kong by China, Nora goes in a vacation travel to India and China. In Hong Kong, she meets the now retired and pub owning Brigadier Lethbridge-Stewart and the Unbound Doctor (David Warner).

At the pub, she drinks a local soda and takes the label and the cap of the bottle for her collection. At this moment, Nora and the Doctor start to talk, and he invites her to lunch in a fancy local restaurant in the next day, and they go.

After three days, Nora has to return to work in Bristol, and there she misses and dreams of the Doctor’s company.

She find the old man beautifull and intriguing.

To her surprise, he apears in the city, saying he wanted to visit the place and remembering Nora that she told him she worked in the local library.

Being rescued by the Doctor from the hands of some Boneless, she  becomes even more friends with with the Doctor, who goes visit her to get some books and talk about them.

One month later, he invites Nora to travel with him in the Tardis around the Universe. After asking for some time to think, Nora combines with him to go travelling all fridays. In the travels, she starts to fall in love with the adventurous alien, who, for Nora's surprise, reveals a hopeless romantic side and corresponds to her feelings.

They assume themselves as lovers to family and friends, marrying two years later.

Nora is a History, Philosophy and Literature Nerd, especially fascinated with the Middle East, South Asia, the African Continent, South America and the Caribean (Antilles).

She also has a passion for the works of Jules Verne, Alexandre Dumas, Victor Hugo and The Arabian Nights.

Despite her curiosity to learn new things, Nora is very shy, bumblying, pessimistic and frightfull, trying to cheer people being a huge effort. 

The travels with the Doctor are her ark to learn how to act with bravure despite her fears, and, also, learn to see the more positive sides of situations and finding solutions to problems.

Nora’s marriage with the Doctor endures until her death by old age, when she is 88th years old.

Her travelling album, with their photos taken together and her collection of soda caps and labels, is guardede by the Doctor as a dear memory of Nora.

They have a daughter, Neela, who inherits the two hearts and the longevity related to regeneration powers of her father.

Tell me about Hugo and Ethan I dare you

Okay so uh, first a shoutout to @freddiecook for dragging me back into the Skins fandom, you are the reason these two exist and I thank you (it's been a while since I've seriously done some actual OC work and these two are VERY important for the fic). Rambling under the cut!

So Ethan Xiao and Hugo Wright are what I like to consider two best friends where there is no way to clearly define their relationship in just one word. Is it platonic? Romantic? Sure they teeter around there. Familial? At this point Hugo lives with the Xiaos considering how strained his relationship with his actual family is. These two are basically two weird kids who end up sticking together.

Anyways Ethan Xiao is more or less someone with a good heart - a bit loud at times but he really does care. He's someone who gets fixated around things he likes, and has the inability to keep track of time. Special shiny interest? Video games and animals (biology nerd). Considering he grows up in a traditional chinese household, he's constantly under a lot of pressure. In high school it's the typical asian six pack: all higher functions math courses, physics, chemistry and biology. The usual. He's fundamentally someone who values his parent's opinion over anything else. Even past the bonds with his closest friend. It's complicated being immigrants' children and he's no exception. Ethan is also a very on the nose type of guy and is blunt to say the least.

On the flipside is his childhood best friend Hugo Wright who is basically the Xiao's adopted family member. He doesn't see them as family, not quite. Now, just like Ethan, he also has fixations namely ones about stories and video games. I won't go too into detail about his home life since it's uh, it's really not the best. Let's just say his parents don't particularly care what happens to him. Hugo is more focused on linguistics and full on resents his family for their neglect. He cares more about the relationship with his friends more than his familial relationships. The big thing he has issues with is communication, where Ethan can hit things on the head, Hugo is vague about things to say the least.

Together they're math nerd meet english analyzer, one of them is easier to reason with (it's Hugo funnily enough) and the other has more faith in people (Ethan). Hopefully I can formally write for them at some point - will they be centric? Maybe, we'll see.
