Oppenheimer (2023) Review
Woah Nolan, when I asked you to redeem yourself after Tenet I did not mean literally annihilate all my senses!!
Plot: The story of American scientist J. Robert Oppenheimer and his role in the development of the atomic bomb.
Many have set forth upon the epic cinematic quest of experiencing ‘Barbenheimer’. My screening was filled with audience members wearing bright pink and slurping slushies from special reusable Barbie cups. Ironically it was those individuals that ended up leaving the movie half way when they realised that this isn’t the free spirited light-hearted entertainment promised by the internet phenomenon, and that Oppenheimer is a serious and an intelligent piece of filmmaking that retells an important part of history with a constant harrowing feeling of dread throughout, and that this may be a bit too much to handle for a casual viewer. And in regards to Barbenheimer, I salute those that achieve this one-day feat, however that’s over 5 hours of staring at a big cinema screen. That’s a whole lotta movie. With my migraines I cannot hack it. I am truly weak, although additionally my dear fiancée had zero interest in seeing Oppenheimer however very much is excited for Barbie, so the latter I will check out at a later date with her. Instead I went to see this new Nolan epic myself, and I must say it’s a good one!
It’s very different to Christopher Nolan’s more recent cinematic entries that are more science-fiction based, and instead treads straight through the biopic/drama genre, yet shows that his style is very much fit for the subject matter. Using Nolan’s typical non-linear way of storytelling, this film weaves narratives and different time periods seamlessly as it explores the profound depths of a man who’s actions altered the world’s trajectory forever, for better or worse. This is such an interesting and pivotal part of history, and Nolan takes his time telling you this story, though he never panders to the audience. There are many scenes where characters are simply talking and lots of quick dialogue is being thrown around revolving around political and physics-based topics, and very much demands the audience’s full attention so as to not miss a single detail. I was enthralled by this movie from start to finish.
This is a movie for cinephiles. From filming on 65mm larger format film, featuring for the first time ever sections in IMAX black and white analog photography and utilised extensive practical effects and minimal computer-generated imagery. It is strange for me to be complimenting a movie for lack of visual effects, as back in the day CGI was all the rave, and impressive use of computer animated imagery would be applauded, however in the current climate’s over saturated Hollywood blockbusters seeing a big budget movie that relies sorely on practical and camera lighting effects is truly immense - especially when the movie’s scope is as big as Oppenheimer. From when Oppenheimer is having mental images of fire and space to the actual atomic bomb being set off, this film needs to be seen on the big screen. The sound design and score perfectly add to the never-ending haunting feel of the film.
Cillian Murphy has always be a tour de force, however this may be his role of a lifetime. He truly becomes J. Robert Oppenheimer, and he expresses so much with his eyes - the fear, the prowess, the loss, the determination, the despair - so many emotions. Truly one hell of a performance. Robert Downey Jr. is a shoe-horn for a Best Supporting Actor nod at the Academy Awards, and proves here that after a decade of being stuck doing superhero shenanigans he can still give a proper captivating performance. He isn’t in the film much, but his performance sticks out long after the credits roll. From the delivery to the mannerisms, you can sense the malicious nature of his character. Matt Damon is solid, Emily Blunt and Florence Pugh both bring tears, Alden Ehrenreich brings some light humour, Gary Oldman pops in for a scene... Honestly there are so many famous faces in this film that I originally did not know were in this, so it’s best to not spoil all the appearances. But the entire cast is giving it their A-game, with as aforementioned Murphy and Downey being the MVPs.
Oppenheimer is a fascinating and phenomenal historical epic that provides insight into an important moment when the world changed, and Nolan uses his Nolanisms to great effect to deliver a truly captivating and haunting movie-going experience. Seems like Tenet was but a slight hiccup in the director's incredible cinematic journey.
Overall score: 8/10

top 5 WORST MOVIES EVER!!!
Uh oh um. So I gotta say that I'm not that much of a cinephile or a hater when it comes to movies because I watch the vast majority of them with friends and that improves my watching experience greatly. That being said I think I do have 5 movies that I have beef with (might be controversial)
1. Starting off with BATTLE ROYALE (2000) I don't care this movie sucks and I have a personal vendetta against it. I was 15 years old, watching and overanalysing squid game because I liked it, enjoying life, when my dad came to me and started full on SHITTING on the squid and saying how it SUCKS BALLS AND ASS and that it's a CHEAP COPY OF BATTLE ROYALE and that he's disappointed in me because I'm such a smart girl and I'm enjoying such a trash show. So I was really angry because wtf he tore my hyperfixation apart and so I watched battle royale out of spite and God......... I did not enjoy it in the slightest and I still harvest nothing but negative feelings towards it. From what I can remember the characters were Nothing, the action was disappointing, the point was made 10 minutes in and the rest was filled with nonsense. I don't care for the themes of this movie and I don't want to make sense of them. I was just angry at my dad for saying I'm stupid and then directing me to a movie that doesn't even have a single character with a compelling motivation that i care about and shoves relationship talk in the middle without it being rewarding in the slightest.
2. Queen Margot 1994. Sorry I'm trying to enjoy the story without incest porn in the middle but this movie doesn't let me
3. Thor the dark world... Thor is my favourite avenger and ragnarok is my favourite mcu movie so I don't like the direction of this one very much. I just think that Thor and Jane don't work in the first two movies and basing Thors entire motivation on her when the relationship is not very compelling in the first place is not a good recipe for a movie. Loki felt much more like the main character and I already forgot who the villain and what the plot was. Ragnarok is the only good Thor movie 😔
4. Ummmm red white and royal blue??? Idk I went into it thinking it would be at least funny but it was so shallow and cliche and had the most overused gay archetypes and character arcs and the politics were funny in how they sucked and the main couple just reminded me of Charles and Navarre for some reason and it made me very sad and angry because they had NO CHEMISTRY WHATSOEVER!!!! And. Yea. That's it I guess
5. Ok this is gonna be veryyyy controversial but I did not like the ragad movie at all for the simple reason that I do not see how ragad can be performed in a different medium. Stoppard may have directed it but Roth and Oldmas performances were so unenthusiastic and it lacked what made the actual play so great. I don't know. Maybe I'm missing something but I really don't like this movie and this letterboxd review really sums it up for me

#im sorry i have memory issues so all my complaints are very vague as i dont remember half of what happens in these movies already#also yea. dont come at me for ragad#ask

Dahakula is a small village about twenty-five kilometers from Krishnanagar. All around are fields, small houses and flower gardens. Every morning, the sweet sun falls on the soil. Here, the word 'job' seems like a luxury. Most people make a living by cultivating flowers. And those who have learned a little or a little, have moved to distant cities.
Standing silently at one end of the village is the Chowdhury house—the house smells of the old days. The faded walls, the gray wooden doors—everything seems to be a witness to a lost time. Chowdhury Ginni and her husband Harprasad live in that house. And their only hope and hope is their only son, Debabrata—whose story of talent is on everyone's lips in the village.
They had many dreams for their son. Debabrata came to the last stage of his studies and one day said,
—"Staying here won't do anything, mother, if you want to do something big in life, you have to go out."
Ginni's chest felt as if it was bursting that day. Still, thinking about his son's future, he agreed with tears in his eyes.
Debabrata traveled to faraway Bangalore. Fate was with him. In a short time, he got a big job—with good pay. Standing on the ground of the village, he could not even imagine.
At first, Debabrata would call every day.
— "Mom, how are you?"
— "How is your father?"
— "I'm fine... Have you eaten properly? Are you okay?"
The tears that were gathering inside the mother would be suppressed in front of her son's dreams. At that time, her only companion was Haraprasad.
Years passed. Debabrata married a colleague from the office. He came to the village with his wife once. That time, a light seemed to spread on Ginni's face. A lamp lit up in the dark room.
But happiness did not last long. That time, Haraprasad suddenly fell ill. Before reaching the city hospital, he passed away on the road.
Everything seemed to collapse in an instant. Debabrata, overcome with grief, said,
— "Mom, you come with me to Bangalore."
Ginni shook her head and said,
— "No, Dad… I can't leave this place. Your father's memory, this yard, this wall… Where will I leave all this?"
Despite much persuasion, the mother did not budge. Finally, the son said,
— "Okay, Mom, I'm going to tell my aunt next door. She will see you. I will call her every day, I will send everything I need."
Then the story of a lonely life began.
In the morning, that girl cooked. Then there was only silence all day. In the afternoon, Ginni went up to the roof and sat. She saw a flock of pigeons sitting on the corner of the roof.
Spreading a handful of rice, she said,
— "Come, Dad, come."
The pigeons come every day. Ginni also says every day,
"Today, Dadabhai called, you know? He said, it's very busy..."
The pigeons also listened, nodding their heads.
Days passed… For a while, the boy didn’t call. Ginni thought,
—Maybe he’s busy… Maybe he’ll come back next month…”
The pigeons chirped. Ginni felt as if they were saying,
Grandma, didn’t Dadabhai call, did he?”
Tears welled up in her eyes. Ginni said,
You’re right, Dad… he’s very busy. You know, I can’t call myself. I’m old, I don’t remember the number and… I just wait for the call to come….
We are oldma…”
Then Ginni didn’t wait for the call anymore. She named the pigeons—Papiya, Rupa, Ranga, Mithu, Mishti, Chuti.
She talked to them every day—
“Ranga, I see you’re playing less today…”
“Mishti, you’re getting fatter day by day!”
Chuti, why did you come so late?”
One day, suddenly, her son called—
Mom… We left Bangalore and moved to London. Better opportunities… Big office… That's why I couldn't call you for so long."
Ginni was silent for a while. Then she said,
You did well, father… My and your father's blessings are always with you, your progress is our satisfaction. Be well… Do you know how many companions I have here?"
Companions? Who are they, mother?"
My Papiya, Rupa, Ranga, Mithu, Mishti, Chuti… The pigeons on the roof. They are my companions now."
From the other side, the boy laughed,
Mom, not you either… As you get older, your mind becomes dull… Do you talk to pigeons?"
The old woman was silent for a while…
What, mother, aren't you saying anything?"
Maybe that's why dad… or why should I look for you among these pigeons?"
Maybe the boy doesn't understand… how much emptiness is behind these words.
He smiles and says,
"Okay mom, Rakhi… we'll talk later."
The phone hangs up. Ginni stares at the phone for a long time. Then he says slowly,
"Yes dad… we'll talk again…"
The old woman comes up to the roof. She looks at the sky. The pigeons are still sitting on the corner of the roof. Ginni smiles and says,
"Today I have a lot of stories to tell you… You know, Dadabhai called, but where did your mind go today…!"
The pigeons sit quietly. Maybe they understand too…
This old woman is not waiting for anyone anymore… she is just counting down the time… to tell a story for the last time.
The sound of the pigeons' wings fluttering around the old woman on the empty roof. The surroundings are silent. Ginni thinks, is there anything else left in life? For whom is this so much! What will happen to this alone From!
Suddenly… that familiar chatter—
as if the pigeons were saying,
"Don't be afraid, old lady… We are here… until the last day… Don't be afraid…”
Shampa.... ✍️
