Lasting Thoughts

Do you still think about me from time to time?

Do you look at a girl laughing with her whole chest and remember the joke you told that made me do the same?

Do you hear that song I played you on our late night drives and quickly shuffle your playlist?

Do you walk the aisles of book stores hoping to catch a glimpse of me on the floor holding more books than I could carry?

Do you smile when it rains and think of me jumping in the sidewalk puddles?

Do you pass by my favorite restaurant and wonder if my order is still the same?

Do you miss me at all somewhere in your brain?

Cause I think of you everytime I watch Scooby Doo.

I think of you when I walk to the bars with my friends and search the sky for your favorite constellation.

I think of you in the checkout line when I see the gum you would always buy.

I think of you when I see a person so happy to pet a random dog on the street.

I think of you when I see an acoustic guitar and how you played so sweet.

I think of you jogging backwards just to see my face.

I think of you in moments that are so ordinary but still make me lose sleep.

I don’t think it’s avoidable. You spend so much time with someone that eventually everything they do is all you see when not together.

And maybe these small glimpses and lasting thoughts will end one day, after years of us no longer speaking each others’ names, but I almost wish that they won’t.

If these things keep you frozen in my mind then I’ll take at least that, because when you left the only thing you gifted me were old habits and ghosts who don’t look back.
