Now regardless what brand we’re talking about: there’s always this sweet spot. The place where price and quality meet in the right proportions. When the Umidigi Z Pro was launched, it was far from this sweet spot. In fact, eventhough it had a fast processor and two decent camera sensors built in it was a dissaster!

And it was a dissaster happening at anything but a convenient time. His predecessor the UMi Z was just getting horrible press due to swollen batteries, an OTA software update that led the phone to brick completely and the always absent customer support of UMi/ Umidigi. In short: Not a good year for the UMi Company.

In fact one might come to the conclusion it was such a bad year that they even decided to rebrand. The name Umidigi appeared and with it the newest (or first so you will) Umidigi “flagship” the Umidigi Z Pro. Launched just a couple of months after the UMi Z, there was hardly any change to notice from the outside. Except the UMi Z made it look like it had two rear camera’s when in fact one of the two was the (tremendously failing) laser focus lens.The Z Pro came with two actual rear camera’s. In fact it sports the very decent Sony IMX258 sensors which have known to produce stunning results…

But sadly, in other brands phones! Because the Umidigi software buffs and engineers somehow didn’t manage to produce similar quality pictures and videos. However it might have been, considering the high quality camera sensors, the Mediatek Helio X27 (one of the fastest processors out there those days) and the 4000 mAh battery Umidigi dubbed the Z Pro their latest “flagship” and slapped a price-tag between 250 to 275 euro on the device. Since they were obviously in a hurry to rebrand, the Z Pro had to launch quickly, thus leaving an entire first generation customers to be beta-testers. Paying beta-testers even!

So much for the history of the Umidigi Z Pro. Now, like I said in the very beginning there is this sweet spot, when price and what you get for it are just in the right proportion. Well since Umidigi is launching a new “flagship” like every forthnight these days there has been a price drop. This means you can order the Umidigi Z Pro for anywhere between 129 and 150 euro now. But wait a minute? Why would I want to buy a bugprone phone that had the worst of press even if its half the original price now? If that’s the question you’re about to ask then read on. I will try to explain:

First let’s address some of the complaints about the original, first batch of Umidigi Z Pro phones. The battery life was terrible 3.5 to 4 hrs SoT, even though it was packing a 4000mAh battery. The camera had focus issues, and some customers were only able to use the monochrome camera if the wanted to shoot anything besides macro shots. It wasn’t able to view HD YouTube or Netflix feeds, which even last year, was rather sad. And the fingerprint scanner would respond randomly if at all. And ofcourse many cases of freezing. When we look at this severe list of problems we can conclude two things. The first obviously being the fact this phone should in NO WAY have been released already. And secondly: Given the quality of materials used (Sony Camera, Samsung RAM etc etc) and the mentioned list one can conclude the problem is in the software!

And this is the good news! Simply because most of those things can be fixed with software updates. And they did! Now let’s jump to 2018 and find that as soon as you start the phone up it offers you several OTA updates. Now truth be told it’s always a feeling like russian roulette to agree to an Umidigi update, but in the case of the Z Pro they were actually useful, and working flawlessly! So now, we have this light aluminium gun greyish body. A beautiful 2.5D screen with an oleophobic layer that’s running on Android 7.1, and that immediately impoved the battery life. So now it’s actually useable. Which is nice. They also improved the performance of the camera and some other bugs and glitches have been taken care of. So now, is it a perfect phone?

No, it’s not, but it’s a decent phone for a 140 euro price and it comes in this cool metal box, with this cool red charger cable. It’s got an iPhone 7 Plus/ OnePlus 5 vibe going on, and you can tell all your buddies your phone has a tencore chip. It might sound sarcastic and ofcourse I am, but truth is every thing looks slick and well build. The problem here was and remains the software. That being said with the updates installed, the Umidigi Z Pro is a pretty decent phone at it’s price. It runs on a Helio X27 decacore processor coupled with 4GB of RAM. Yet it’s impossible to get over 96K on the AnTuTu benchmark out of it.

Thanks to the update to Android Nougat the fingerprint scanner is flawless and fast and it’s able to hold the charge for 5 to 6 hours which again, is not what you would expect of a 4000mAh battery. But it’s almost twice as long as before the update, so definitely an improvement. Gaming is no problem on the Umidigi Z Pro and it can handle most of the games without any graphical problems. What I did notice though was the temperature of the phone is constantly very high. This hasn’t lead to any problems in the two weeks I used it. Maybe it can be related to the placement of the chipset.

Then, there is the camera. It certainly has improved after the update, but it still has some flaws too. Flaws that I personally would find inexcuseable in a 250-buck-flagship-phone, but are perfectly willing to deal with at a 130-140 euro price tag. The two main cons I consider to be the low light performance, that is … basically absent. Which might not sound like a big deal since a lot oof budget phones have trouble in low light. But here’s the thing: A) devices are getting better and anno 2018 even (some) low budget phones can shoot decent footage in the dark. And B) These phone don’t have a build-in camera option named “SUPER NIGHT MODE”. Correct me if I’m wrong, but that sounds promising. But the results are just migraine inducing, look at these examples:

Another thing on the camera of the Umidigi Z Pro is the dynamic range. At moments it’s perfectly on top of things. Yet shoot a second picture just seconds later and it’s a proper mess. Another equally mysterious phenomenon is the bokeh- or portrait mode. In one picture it seperates subject from the background just perfectly, the next shot is a mess again. Luckily it has an option to refocus after the shot has been taken. This can make up for some of the software’s mistakes, but sometimes even refocussing won’t help you out. Let me show you some “highlights” of dual camera missers:

So, what you are saying it’s an okay phone for it’s price that’s well build, it just doesn’t have a good camera…right? Well… No. See and this is what did my head in reviewing this smartphone, it is able to shoot some incredible looking pictures. The monochrome mode is just stunning, and I was able to make some lovely shots with it. If the conditions are right it’s a great camera. Just make sure you’re always making more than one picture of whatever you want to save. It has a zoom-option that also is great to use. The shutter speed is absolutely fantastic and I was able to catch my kids jumping in mid-air on several occassions. So no complaints there.

But as soon as the lights go low, you might as well forget you’re even carrying a camera. Unless your using the flash you can forget anything will turn out other than grainy and blurry. Video camera, same problems. The colours, the sharpness..everything looks great, but there’s no continuous auto focus meaning you have to tap the screen every time you move. And it lacks any form of stabilisation, so better not breathe or footage will be shaky. If you dont move and have steady hands however, the camera shoots lovely pictures. So you see my problem here? For every pro there is a con and the other way around. And that goes for everything. No joke.

Take the speaker, volume is way above average, great in a noisy environment, unfortunately the sound quality is below mediocre. The fast charger is a fast charger, yet it charges other 4000mAh phones FASTER than the phone it came with: The Umidigi Z Pro. That being said, it charges fast enough to not be annoying, but you know, it’s all those little tiny things together that still make me not sure. One thing I am sure of is the price drop was a great move and much more fitting to the phone. Would I recommend it? That depends on who’s asking. Are you not a heavy use but1.) still want a phone that has a good build and is not too slow? 2.) looking for a good, modern looking phone in the iPhone/OnePlus-look The Umidigi Z Pro might be a great phone for you.

If however you are a heavy user and want more than a 50-60% succes rate when taking pictures, you might want to skip the Umidigi Z Pro altogether. After all heavy use and a relatively fast heating chip usually aren’t the best of friends in the long end. Just consider the fact you might also get a Meizu M6S or a Nubia M2 for the same price, those might be better alternatives. As always I conclude with some picture samples shot on the Umidigi Z Pro. But one thing is quite clear that smartphones have evolved a lot from what we had in the past. They’ve got new designs, vivid display panels, multiple cameras, and more powerful processors than workstations of yesterday. But which were the best smartphones of the decade past?

Apple, BlackBerry, Samsung, HTC, and Nokia were the initial smartphone companies that set some benchmarks for young contenders such as OnePlus, Vivo, and Xiaomi. Chipmakers largely including Qualcomm and MediaTek have also helped the market grow faster than ever predicted with processors supporting newer tasks and enhanced performance experiences. Both Apple and Google have also significantly improved their respective mobile operating systems, iOS and Android, which are running on all smartphones nowadays.

Having said that, there were some smartphones that tickled the public’s fancy and set the trend in the market. We here cover all those iconic smartphones that have made history in the last 10 years and influenced the market to keep up the pace. Here are the best mobile phones of the decade past.

Apple iPhone 4

Apple back in June 2010 brought the iPhone 4 as its distinctly designed smartphone over the previous iPhone models. The iPhone 4 had a glass-sandwich design along with a metal frame that was copied by a large number of smartphone companies, including some Indian vendors such as Lava and Karbonn. The fourth-generation iPhone model also offered a slim waistline and an optimised software experience along with a list of apps and iOS 4. However, Apple faced the infamous “Antennagate” issue thanks to the glitch in designing the antenna gap. The company did try to fix it by offering bumpers and overhauling the antenna structure on the iPhone 4s.

Samsung Galaxy S

In 2010, when Apple was flourishing with huge domination in the smartphone market, Samsung brought the Galaxy S as its flagship phone to closely compete against the iPhone. The Samsung Galaxy S, which precisely debuted in March 2010, ticked all the boxes that the market set for a top-notch smartphone. It had a Super AMOLED display, Samsung Exynos (Hummingbird) SoC, and as much as 16GB of onboard storage to take on the iPhone. Samsung also provided a Corning Gorilla Glass protection that later became usual for all mid-range and premium smartphones. The Galaxy S ran Android 2.1 Eclair out-of-the-box along with Samsung’s TouchWiz UI on top.

Nokia 808 PureView

Nokia, much before the era of its brand licensee HMD Global — exactly in February 2012, unveiled the Nokia 808 PureView as its masterpiece. The phone didn’t include a lightning fast processor or desktop-sized RAM, but what it had was a 41-megapixel camera sensor that had used an interpolation technique to pack five distinct pixels into one. It set the benchmark for today’s smartphones that have cameras with a megapixel count of 48, 64, or 108 — thanks to similar pixel binning techniques. The Nokia 808 PureView also had a Xenon flash instead of merely including an LED flash model. However, it ran Nokia Belle that was based on Symbian OS 10.1 over Android.

Google Nexus 4

Google tied up with LG to launch the Nexus 4 in October 2012. The smartphone offered flagship-like specifications at a mid-range price point. It also provided stock Android 4.2 Jelly Bean along with guaranteed updates for some time. The Google Nexus 4 also include wireless charging support and features such as active noise cancellation and a polarised glass with a 3D pattern finish. All those highlights made the Nexus 4 a compelling Android smartphone against the competition.

HTC One

HTC One was unveiled back in February 2013 to counter the likes of the Apple iPhone 5 and Samsung Galaxy S III. The smartphone that debuted with Android 4.1.2 Jelly Bean had an aluminium unibody construction that made it an eye-catching option against its competitors. Also, HTC offered stereo front-mounted speakers that were equipped with BoomSound technology. The curved back design of the HTC One aided ergonomics and provided a good grip in the hand. There were also white polycarbonate bands to give room to the integrated antennas. Overall, the design of the HTC One made it a trendsetter, and its aesthetics were clearly featured later on models such as the OnePlus 3 and OnePlus 3T. Apple also offered a similar antenna design on the iPhone 6.

Xiaomi Mi 3

Xiaomi Mi 3 debuted in September 2013. It was designed initially for China, but the phone reached markets including India that helped make the Beijing-based company a household name. The Mi 3 offered top-of-the-line specifications of its time that included a 5-inch full-HD display and a quad-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 SoC — all at an affordable price. It also had an attractive design that was made through a unibody shell that became an example for newer smartphones by not just Xiaomi but also many of its competitors. The smartphone also had Android 4.4.2 KitKat at the time of its launch along with MIUI.

LG G Flex

LG G Flex had a flexible display and battery along with a self-healing coating at the back that all made it to our list of iconic smartphones of the decade past. Launched in October 2013, the LG G Flex had a curved P-OLED display that was equipped along with the flexible lithium polymer battery to provide a curved design. The smartphone ran Android 4.2.2 Jelly Bean with LG’s Optimus UI that brought features such as Dual Window and QSlide to distinguished the experience.

Moto G

Motorola back in November 2013 launched the Moto G as its budget smartphone targeted at emerging markets. The smartphone helped Motorola gained huge popularity in growing markets including India and Brazil years after its comeback following a split into two separate entities — with Motorola Mobility serving the consumer market and Motorola Solutions deliver enterprise offerings. The Moto G had a simple and sober design that appealed to the masses. Similarly, the stock Android experience that was initially based on Android 4.3 Jelly Bean provided fair enough convenience. The affordable price of the Moto G also made it amongst the early smartphones to kick off the budget wars in the market.

OnePlus One

OnePlus, the Shenzhen-based company that is amongst the top-five premium smartphone brands in markets such as India, started its journey in the smartphone world with the OnePlus One back in April 2014. Titled as the “Flagship Killer”, the phone had Android 4.4 KitKat-based CyanogenMod (CM11S). It was one of the highly acclaimed smartphones among app developers — thanks to the openness provided by CyanogenMod to customise the experience. The OnePlus One also brought the trend of limited availability through its invite-only system. It was later transformed into flash sales that companies such as Xiaomi adopted to create enough hype of their new offerings.

Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge

Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge was launched in March 2015 with a dual-edge curved display. It made the trend of using curved glass panels that we saw not only on some of the recent Galaxy Note-series models but also on phones such as the BlackBerry Priv and OnePlus 7 Pro. The Galaxy S6 Edge featured a 5.1-inch Super AMOLED display with a Corning Gorilla Glass 4 protection. The handset also had a heart-rate sensor and wireless charging support. It ran Android 5.0.2 Lollipop.

BlackBerry Priv

After facing many ups and downs, BlackBerry brought the BlackBerry Priv as its pure Android smartphone in September 2015. The smartphone also retained the company’s legacy of offering a physical QWERTY keyboard — but in a slide-out design. The keyboard made it a promising option for professionals and business users. Running on Android 5.1.1, the BlackBerry Priv offered a full-fledged Android experience along with Android for Work support of enterprise users. The device also had a curved-edge display. Since it wasn’t based on BlackBerry 10 OS aka BB10, the Priv didn’t have a gesture controls. Instead, the phone had on-screen navigation keys.

Lenovo Phab 2 Pro

Lenovo tied up with Google and unveiled the Phab 2 Pro in June 2016 as the world’s first smartphone based on Project Tango platform, which was aimed augmented reality (AR) computing to mobile devices. The smartphone had a unique camera setup that offered motion tracking, depth perception, and area learning. In addition to its AR features, the Lenovo Phab 2 Pro had Dolby Audio 5.1 Capture technology for recording 3D surround sound experiences. The smartphone also had a large, 6.4-inch QHD IPS display and came with Android 6.0.1 Marshmallow.

Xiaomi Mi MIX

A large number of smartphone vendors the days claim to offer a full-screen experience. But if we need to find out the trailblazer of that segment, it is none other than the Xiaomi Mi MIX. The smartphone was launched back in October 2016 as a concept phone along with Android 6.0 Marshmallow. But shortly after its initial preview, it went on sale in China. The near bezel-less display of the Mi MIX was its USP, though it also had a piezoelectric acoustic earpiece speaker as well as an ultrasonic proximity sensor as the two key highlights. The selfie camera of the Mi MIX was also claimed to be 50 percent smaller in size over the conventional sensors and was placed at the bottom right corner of the phone to give enough space for the display.

Apple iPhone X

In September 2017, Apple revamped its iPhone family by unveiling the iPhone X. The new iPhone model, which was the tenth anniversary iPhone, was completely different in looks and design from what we saw earlier. With a display notch, it housed facial recognition sensors, bringing the tech to the mainstream and introducing Face ID as an upgrade to the existing fingerprint recognition technology that the Cupertino company called Touch ID. Also, the iPhone X — originally based on iOS 11 — was amongst the first successful smartphones with a completely button-less front panel. Apple also provided a vertically-placed dual camera setup that made a trend in itself.

Razer Phone

Razer, the company that’s popular for developing gaming peripherals, launched the Razer Phone back in November 2017. The smartphone, which was the predecessor to the Razer Phone 2, had IGZO IPS display panel with 120Hz refresh rate to deliver immersive gaming experiences. There was also a wide colour gamut to impress mobile gamers. The Razer Phone had a dual front-firing speakers along with THX-certified amplifiers and Dolby Atmos integration to deliver a surround sound experience. The phone came with Android 7.1.1 Nougat at the time of its launch. It all-in-all set a benchmark for gaming phones.

Vivo X20 Plus UD

Vivo launched the X20 Plus UD in January 2018 as the world’s first smartphone to carry an under-display fingerprint sensor. It included the Synaptics-made under-display fingerprint sensor that was touted to detect a fingerprint in few milliseconds. The presence of the under-display fingerprint sensor, which later became the new normal among Chinese smartphones and widely called in-display fingerprint sensor, replaced the requirement of having a physical fingerprint sensor. The Vivo X20 Plus UD that was based on Android 7.1 Nougat also came with a matte back panel that just had the dual rear camera setup along with an LED flash.

Huawei P20 Pro

Huawei unveiled the P20 Pro in March 2018 as the world’s first smartphone with a triple rear camera setup. The Huawei P20 Pro had a camera setup that included an 8-megapixel sensor with 3x optical zoom thanks to a Leica telephoto lens and a 40-megapixel RGB sensor. The third sensor was placed next to the dual camera setup that had 20-megapixel resolution. It was a monochrome sensor — meant to enhance sharpness. Further, the P20 Pro included 4D Predictive Focus and six-axis image stabilisation. The smartphone was launched with Android 8.1 Oreo.

Vivo Nex

Vivo Nex was unveiled in June 2018 as the world’s first smartphone with a pop-up selfie camera. The company used an elevating mechanism that was later adopted by its homegrown competitors such as Huawei and Xiaomi. The Vivo Nex also included Vivo’s Screen SoundCasting technology that replaced the earpiece from the front side and provides a nearly bezel-less display. Further, the smartphone had the in-display fingerprint sensor that was different from the sensor available on the Vivo X20 UD. The smartphone came with Android 8.1 Oreo.

Samsung Galaxy A8s

Samsung launched the Galaxy A8s in December 2018 as the world’s first smartphone with a hole-punch display panel. The South Korean company called the panel the Infinity-O Display that reached various newer Galaxy-series models, including the Galaxy S10e and Galaxy Note 10 family. The Samsung Galaxy A8s based on Android 9 Pie also had a triple rear camera setup and an aluminium frame. Nevertheless, the hole-punch display was the USP of the Galaxy A8s that set the stage of many other similar-looking smartphones.

Samsung Galaxy Fold

Samsung Galaxy Fold is arguably the world’s first foldable smartphone for the masses. Launched in February this year, the phone comes with a flexible display that measures 7.3 inches and can deliver a tablet-like experience. There is also a secondary display that comes into force once the handset is folded. Although Samsung saw some criticism over the flimsy design of the Galaxy Fold, it made some improvements and fixed the initial design flaws to make the smartphone ready for the global markets. The Galaxy Fold runs Android 9 Pie so far, though it is likely to receive an update to Android 10 sometime next year.

Xperia 5 Vs Note 10 Camera Comparison Shootout

Pic 1 Berry So from time to time throughout the video you see this little blue spinning thing in the top corner. That will be an opportunity for you to vote on which phone is winning. Once you do that you'll be able to see what everyone else is voting for. This is quite a close range shot of a wild berry resting on a moss covered tree. The first thing I notice about this image is the white balance & colour saturation.

The Xperia 5 photo has a cooler blue white balance and the Note 10 much warmer. I think the AI on the Note 10 photo has kicked in here and boosted up the colours quite a bit. No let's zoom in in post editing to get a closer look at the details. So you can see actually the Note 10 in this scenario has done a really good job if preserving the fine details.

Now pic 2. The selfie test. So one very apparent difference that you'll notice is the Xperia 5 has a much wider field of view & The skin tones are much warmer on the Note 10 photo. Both have great details. The Note 10 seems to be doing a better job of preserving the highlight details and the Xperia 10 seems to be delivering more natural colours. Which one wins this one. Theres a poll...

Picture 3 - Autumn leaves No I think this is a perfect example where AI enhancements go a little to far. The Note 10 plus as boosted the colour saturation so much that it looks almost artificial. The Xperia 5 again does a great job of delivering a natural image...although it does seemed to have added a lot of background blur automatically. Where as the note 10 has way more of the background still in focus.

Picture 4. Macro Mushroom So trust me on this. Going I foresee in 2020 all the big smartphone companies will be making a emphasis on Macro. This photo was taken at around 7cm away from this wild mushroom. You can see that the Note 10 does a better job of capturing detail at close range. That's not to say the Sony couldn't do the same. Take a look at the foreground of the photo at the bottom left corner. The sony xperia 5 has that twig perfectly in focus...but for some reason not the top of the mushroom....I did try to get it to focus on it..but it kept adjusting...this was probably one of those situations where I should have used manual mode.

Picture 5 HDR shot So in order to get HDR to work you need to open the manual mode and switch it on. And what a difference it makes. So on the left the Xperia 5 is delivering an amazing detailed image on the subject of the photo which is my Sony A73 camera and bokeh effect behind. The Black levels are awesome and its handling the backlight pretty well. The note 10 photo also looks awesome. There is not bokeh effect at all. The details on the tree are preserved all the way to the background and the clouds in the sky also look awesome. The foreground however not as sharp as the Sony.

Pic 6 Selfie HDR So this is the perfect example of how just going into manual settings and switching on HDR can make a huge difference on the Sony Xperia 5. So this is taken using the regual camera mode. The Note 10 does great here handling this high dynamic range situation. The Xperia really struggles and you can see that in the area on the left where the highlights are completely blown out. Now check this out. Manual HDR on and all those details come back and I think you could make a case for the Xperia 5 winning this one. What do you think? Let me know...

Lens Tests. So this is the primary shooter. Warmer on the Sony Xperia 5 and Cooler on the Galaxy Note 10 plus. Details are comparable. Now 2x zoom again very closely matched. The white balances carry over. Now the ultrawide. It's so close however I will see the note seems to preserve the shadow details really well but maybe looks a bit misty in some areas.

Pic 7 Night Cinema So I'm very happy to say it seems that Sony have made some significant improvements to their night mode. You can really see that in this photos. The Note 10 has a dedicated night mode which uses a longer exposure which is great. However sometimes the sharp lines become a little blurred. If you compare the edges of the building and the brickwork you'll see what I mean. So when it comes to details the Sony Xperia 5 wins this one. When it comes to the bright light sources in this photo the Note 10 does better. The signs are more readable. Let me know which one you like better

Pic 8 - night So here is a London street sign with street lighting. Both images have good detail but Sonys night algorithm seems to have added way to much warmth to this one. I think this is the 1st photo in this video where the Sony colours look a little bit off.

Pic 9. Night Shot And here's another similar shot. Of an electrical box. Again the Sony has the sharper edges and also way more detail this time. but the Note 10 has maybe better colour accuracy again at night.

The screen has a resolution of 1440 x 3120 pixels and 515 ppi pixel density. It has an aspect ratio of 19.5:9 and a screen-to-body ratio of 88.3 %. On the camera front, the buyers get a 16 MP Front Camera and on the rear, there's a 48MP + 16MP + 8MP camera with features like Fixed Focus. It is backed by a 4000 mAh battery. Connectivity features in the smartphone include WiFi, Bluetooth, GPS, Volte, NFC and more.

Design

As delicate as it looks, OnePlus 7 Pro is indeed a heavy smartphone once you pick it up. We did find it heavier than Samsung Galaxy S10 smartphones. That may primarily be because of the larger battery, use of denser metal construction and even a separate retractable camera module. Nonetheless, the device feels balanced and it indeed is easy to use. It’s definitely sleeker than before and taller as well with 6.7-inch screen size. The ‘premium’ feel comes largely because of the all-glass front with curved sides and zero distractions in the form of notches or punch holes.

Display

If there’s one thing that OnePlus has proclaimed is a massive improvement over the last year’s flagship OnePlus 6, it’s the near bezel-less screen. And by saying near bezel-less we mean seriously thinner bezels than what’s present in Samsung Galaxy S10 Plus, something which by default makes the 7 Pro’s screen impressively immersive. The company has already adopted OLED screens with older smartphones and the 7 Pro just creates a new benchmark with a QHD+ Fluid AMOLED display that has HDR support, all clubbed with 90Hz refresh rate. Yes, we have seen 90Hz AMOLED screen in the past with Asus ROG Phone but this one has an elegance of its own with near-zero top and bottom bezels with curved sides, making the viewing experience nothing less than ‘eye-popping’.

Performance

Over the years OnePlus has made such an impression of its smartphones that one is bound to expect the top of the line processors. Keeping the tradition, OnePlus 7 Pro harnesses the power from Qualcomm Snapdragon 855. This also makes the device first in the country with this processor. Samsung Galaxy S10 smartphones also come with the same processor but not in India. The processor is clubbed with Adreno 640 and up to 12GB RAM, the variants which we received. You can also get it in 6GB and 8GB RAM variants, which should be equally powerful. Needless to say, playing games, working on multiple apps, streaming videos and music, the experience iOS as smooth as it gets. The big question, however, to ask is if the smartphone really takes advantage of 12GB or even 8GB RAM capacity or just shows-off with no real use.

Camera

With OnePlus 7 Pro, the company has finally joined two new bandwagons - triple rear cameras and a front-facing pop-up camera. The center camera placement design is retained from the OnePlus 6 and 6T except that there’s a third lens in the mix. The camera sensors have been upgraded this time along with the specifications and the overall quality. You get a 48MP Sony IMX586 primary camera with 1.6 um pixel size, 7P lens glass, OIS, EIS, and f/1.6 aperture. This comes with an 8MP telephoto camera (3XL optical zoom) with 1um pixel size, OIS and f/2.4 aperture and a 16MP ultra-wide angle lens with f/2.2 aperture and 117-degree FoV.

Battery

OnePlus smartphones were already a champion in the battery department and OnePlus 7 Pro just carries forward the torch. The 4000mAh battery is one of the longest-running ones (in a single charge) we’ve seen in an Android smartphone. We used the device as our primary driver, making it perform tasks like checking multiple email accounts, browsing social media for hours, playing games non-stop for 3-4 hours in a stretch, streaming audio, videos, all while keeping auto-brightness activated and the display on 90Hz refresh rate. All of this gave us an impressive 14+ hours worth of juice on an average. The screen on-time performance was consistent at 6 hours and above, which is good given the powerful specs and display features. The main counteracting element here is the screen and reducing the animation to 60Hz could give you slightly more battery life. We didn’t feel the need to play around with the refresh rate options as the overall performance was good.

What is Lineage OS?

Lineage OS is a free and open-source operating system which is made available for Android devices and tablets. Lineage OS is also available for few computers and also merely found for few set-top boxes and stuff. Lineage OS is an aftermarket operating system which is based on the Android Linux distribution. As we all know Android OS itself is based on Linux. Lineage OS is, to be honest, a replacement or successor for world-famous aftermarket operating system – Cyanogen Mod. Lineage OS replaced the Cyanogen after the original company i.e., Cyanogen INC. announced that they are discontinuing the development. Since the project still retains the name Cyanogen Mod, the developers are left with no choice instead of changing the name to Lineage OS. Lineage OS was officially launched on December 24th, 2016 along with the source code available on GitHub. In the beginning, Lineage used to publish their custom ROMs with the original Cyanogen Mod logo and stuff, but sooner or later after gaining mass popularity, they made their own logo and started publishing the ROMs with their own logo. As I have been using the Cyanogen Mod from the very beginning of the development, I still would prefer the original Cyanogen Mod over the likes of Lineage OS. Lineage OS is almost all good as Cyanogen Mod, but in my opinion, it lacks a few important features which do make a lot of sense. Cyanogen Mod, which is often referred to as CM is used by many top-tier OEMs like Lenovo and OnePlus. Yes, Cyanogen Mod is the default operating system on many Android Phones. The famous devices shipped with Cyanogen Mod out of the box are OnePlus One and Lenovo ZUK Z1. Both the devices did receive a few updates after the official launch but the operating system was discontinued within the time. Cyanogen Mod is everyone’s favorite because it used to come with the original inbuilt theme engine with over a ten thousand themes available in the Play Store. But the makers of Lineage OS insisted to be quiet and did not respond properly. Yes, you can apply themes in Lineage OS using Substratum. Substratum is good enough with plenty of themes available. But most of the times, most of the heavy themes do not apply properly. Substratum certainly makes your System UI stop working at times. So this is all about the Lineage OS.

Lineage OS versions

So as mentioned earlier, Lineage OS is available from the beginning weeks of January 2017 with the version Lineage OS 13.0. All the previous versions including version 11, version 12 and 12.1 are maintained and developed by Cyanogen itself, but after discontinuing, Lineage entered the show with the version 13 based on Android 6 Marshmallow. Lineage OS 17 Features

As Lineage OS 17 is based on Android 10 and going through the history, Lineage OS very rarely or almost never adds an excessive amount of features compared to the original Android. As mentioned earlier, Lineage OS would be as stock as possible with a minimal amount of features. So, as far as the features are considered, you will be able to see a very minimum feature with stock applications replaced with Lineage OS applications. The major Lineage OS 17 features include A full-fledged system-wide dark mode. This should be one of the biggest change in the change logs of Lineage OS 17. Smart Reply to all the messaging applications. This feature was introduced with certain stock messaging applications a while ago and now it’s something like a universal thing here. This means this feature can be worked with all the Android third-party messaging applications. For instance, let us consider that you have received a WhatsApp message, the smart reply feature automatically detects the message and display a few replies according to the message received. A revamped sharing menu. This feature was introduced with Android 10 officially and this feature will certainly be available with Lineage OS 17. Quicker access to the settings is one of the features that will make its way to the Lineage OS this time around. WiFi sharing via QR codes. This might be the new feature on Lineage OS 17 but this feature is made available with MIUI 10 for all the MIUI running devices. Different gestures for different actions. As Android 10 comes with a novel gestures for navigation, there are different parts of UI, menus for example which can be opened by sliding crossly. Security updates via Google Play store. Wet, cold and heat in USB warnings. This was recently introduced in Android. As Lineage OS 17 is based on the latest Android 10, this feature will definitely take place in the custom ROM. So the above listed are the new features which are making way into the latest Android 10 based Lineage OS. We don’t know how many of the above-mentioned features will be available in the initial Lineage OS 17 builds, but with the updates, Lineage team will add all the above-mentioned features to the core. OnePlus has refreshed its current portfolio of devices, by introducing not one but two new phones- OnePlus 7 and OnePlus 7 Pro. At the event, Carl Pei took the stage and talked a bit about the journey OnePlus had in India and also announced that OnePlus will open three new experience stores, this year in India in three cities- Mumbai, Pune, and Hyderabad.

However, after that, he announced that OnePlus will launch three new products and the first among the three is the new Bullets Wireless 2. The Bullets Wireless 2 the next generation earphones from OnePlus with Bluetooth 5.0 and priced at Rs. 5,990. Each of the earbuds in the Bullets Wireless 2 features a pair of Knowles Balanced Armature drivers and a 10mm dynamic driver.

The OnePlus Bullets Wireless 2 supports Warp Charge by OnePlus and with just 10 minutes of charging, it can deliver 10 hours of music playback, the company proudly claimed at the event. The all-new OnePlus Bullets Wireless 2 earphones are compatible with Android, iOS, Mac and Windows and for Android lovers, there is another good reason to grab it, The OnePlus Bullets Wireless 2 comes with a dedicated button for Google Assistant so that users can access Google Assistant at the push of a button.

The OnePlus Bullets Wireless 2 is the starter, the gadget, everyone was looking for was the OnePlus 7 Pro, which was unveiled right after the Bullets Wireless 2. And Carl introduced the OnePlus 7 Pro, the latest and greatest from OnePlus till now. The OnePlus 7 Pro checks a lot of boxes in terms of out of the box features that someone would expect from a flagship phone in 2019. The OnePlus 7 Pro features a 6.67-inch AMODEL Quad HD+ display, with a refresh rate of 90Hz- First time on a phone we saw a Quad HD+ AMOLED display with a higher refresh rate.

Earlier, ASUS and Razer introduced phones with refresh rates of 90Hz and 120Hz, but none of them featured an AMOLED panel. The OnePlus 7 Pro has HDR10+ support and the display has a maximum brightness of up to 800 nits. Also, on the OnePlus 7 Pro, there are no bezels around the display and there is no notch, the display is curved, which makes the phone look elegant while being minimalist. In terms of hardware, the OnePlus 7 Pro is powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 855 processor, coupled with 6GB, 8GB or 12GB of RAM. There is 128GB or 256GB onboard storage and the phone uses UFS 3.0 storage, which means that data transfers are much faster and the phone is more reliable across different ranges of temperature.

In terms of optics, the OnePlus 7 Pro features a 48-megapixel primary camera, that is a Sony IMX586 sensor. There is also a 16-megapixel wide-angle camera on the back and an 8-megapixel telephoto camera. The triple camera setup on the back is quite flexible and on the front, there is a 16-megapixel pop-up selfie camera. OnePlus has also incorporated drop detection for the pop-up selfie camera so that when a user is taking a selfie or in a video call, and the phone just somehow slips from the hand, during the drop itself, the pop-up selfie camera will be retracted inside, preventing damage to the hardware.

The OnePlus 7 Pro runs Android 9.0 Pie out of the box with Oxygen OS on top. The OnePlus 7 Pro will be a part of the Android Q Beta program and it will receive two major Android OS updates and three years of security patches. The phone packs a 4000mAh non-removable battery with support for 30 Watt WARP Charging. In terms of colour variants, there are just two colour variants in which the OnePlus 7 Pro will be available- Mirror Grey and Nebula Blue. The base variant with 6GB RAM will only be available in the Mirror Grey colour, while the top variant with 12GB RAM will be available in Nebula Blue colour. The OnePlus 7 Pro has liquid cooling and has stereo speakers that support Dolby Atmos. The base variant of OnePlus 7 Pro with 6GB RAM and 128GB storage is priced at Rs. 48,999. The 8GB RAM variant with 256GB storage is priced at Rs. 52,999. The top variant with 12GB RAM and 256GB storage is priced at Rs. 57,999.

After unveiling the OnePlus 7 Pro, it was time for the OnePlus 7 to be revealed. The OnePlus 7 features similar hardware when compared to the 7 Pro, but there are some compromises here and there. The OnePlus 7 is also powered by Qualcomm Snapdragon 855 processor coupled with 6GB or 8GB of RAM and 128GB or 258GB USF 3.0 storage. OnePlus 7 sports a 6.41-inch full-HD+ (1080×2340 pixels) Optic AMOLED display with a 19.5:9 aspect ratio and a pixel density of 402ppi. The display is protected by Corning Gorilla Glass 6. There are Reading Mode and Night Mode just like OnePlus 6T.

In terms of camera, the OnePlus 7 features a dual camera setup on the back. There is a 48-megapixel Sony IMX586 sensor as its primary camera, with an f/1.7 aperture. The primary lens has both Optical Image Stabilisation (OIS) and Electronic Image Stabilisation (EIS). The secondary camera features a 5-megapixel sensor with an f/2.4 aperture. The rear camera is capable of recording videos in 4K at 60fps, 1080p video at up to 240fps, and 720p video at up to 480fps. On the front, there is a 16-megapixel Sony IMX471 sensor, just like the OnePlus 7 Pro, but it’s not a pop-up selfie camera. Rather the selfie camera resides within the waterdrop notch.

The OnePlus 7 runs Android 9.0 Pie out of the box, with Oxygen OS on top. The phone packs a 3,700mAh battery that supports 20W fast charging. The OnePlus 7 starts at Rs. 32,999 for the 6GB RAM variant with 128GB storage, while the 8GB RAM variant is priced at Rs. 37,999. The 6GB RAM variant will only be available in a Mirror Grey colour, while the 8GB RAM variant will be available in both Mirror Grey and Red colour variants.
