Free or Cheap General Language Resources Because idk I Just Wanna Help
All resources either have a free tier or have a low ($10 USD/month or less) subscription fee or a one time purchase option below $100 USD. All prices I give are in USD because I live in the US and this list was already hard to put together okay I'm not also doing conversions
Find language specific lists here.
I have given the links in text format because tumblr has a link limit. Copy and paste into your browser to look at them.
These are generalized. Not for your specific language.
LinQ, a website for reading: https://www.lingq.com/en/
You can click on words you don't know and get a definition and save a flashcard. They provide readings for all levels from beginner to advanced and you can upload your own texts and podcast or video transcripts and there's stuff uploaded by other users to browse through. The website also has some texts with audio included. You can also purchase books through the website. This is all included in the free tier. The paid tier allows you to save an unlimited number of flashcards and includes some forum and tutoring options. It's either $15 a month or $120 for a full year.
Languages available in full: Arabic, Simplified Chinese, Dutch, English, Esperanto, Finnish, French, German, Greek, Hebrew, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Latin, Norwegian, Polish, Portuguese, Romanian, Russian, Slovak, Spanish, Swedish, Ukrainian
Languages partially supported or with incomplete beginner courses: Afrikaans, Armenian, Belarusian, Bulgarian, Cantonese, Catalan, Traditional Chinese, Croatian, Czech, Danish, Georgian, Gujarati, Hindi, Hungarian, Icelandic, Indonesian, Irish, Khmer, Macedonian, Malay, Persian, Punjabi, Serbian, Slovenian, Swahili, Tagalog, Turkish, Vietnamese
Migaku, a web extension and app: https://migaku.com/
Paid service at $10 a month. It has beginner courses and allows for dual language subtitles on things like netflix or youtube. It also allows users to save flashcards from subtitles or articles and sync flashcards between devices
Supported languages: Cantonese, Mandarin, English, French, German, Japanese, Korean, Portuguese, Spanish, Vietnamese
Storylearning Books: https://storylearning.com/books
These are short story, dialogue, or history books by Olly Richards written for beginner to intermediate learners that in my experience at least are written to not be boring for adults. Each chapter of a book includes a key vocabulary list and comprehension questions. Storylearning also has online courses available but they're too expensive for what you get in my opinion. The books are way cheaper, though depending on the language you may have more or less books to buy. The books are usually in the $15-$20 range new but they're often available at used bookstores both online and irl for much cheaper.
Books available in: Spanish, French, Italian, Russian, Arabic (MSA), Brazillian Portuguese, Danish, Dutch, Icelandic, Korean, Norwegian, Swedish, Turkish, Irish
Mango Languages, a pretty standard language app: https://mangolanguages.com/
This is actually a pretty pricey one at like $20 a month but the reason I bring it up is that a lot of people can get it free through their local library and it has a large selection of languages.
Languages supported: Armenian, Azerbaijani, Egyptian Arabic, Iraqi Arabic, Levantine Arabic, Modern Standard Arabic (MSA), Bengali, Cantonese, chaldean Aramaic. Cherokee, Mandarin, Croatian, Czech, Danish, Dari, Dutch, Dzongkha, English, Tagalog, Finnish, French (European and Canadian), German, Greek (modern, ancient, and kione), Hatian Creole, Hawaiian, Hebrew (modern and biblical), Hindi, Hungarian, Icelandic, Igbo, Indonesian, Irish, Italian, Japanese, Javanese, Kazakh, Korean, Latin, Malay, Malayalam, Norwegian, Farsi, Polish, Potawatomi, Punjabi, Romanian, Russian, Scottish Gaelic, Serbian, Shanghainese, Slovak, Spanish (castillian and latin american), Swahili, Swedish, Tamil, Telugu, Thai, Turkish, Tuvan, Ukrainian, Urdu, Uzbek, Vietnamese, Yiddish
Comprehensible Input Wiki, a website for finding language specific comprehensible input resources: https://comprehensibleinputwiki.org/wiki/Main_Page
Comprehensible input is input in a language you understand the message of, not necessarily input you understand every word of. It's good for you to get a lot of it from day one. This website gathers resources like podcasts, kid's shows, youtube channels, books, etc. that are perfect for this sort of thing.
Languages currently on the website as I am writing this: American Sign Language, Arabic (MSA), Armenian, Basque, Biblical Greek, Biblical Hebrew, Bulgarian, Cantonese, Catalan, Chinese, Czech, Danish, Dutch, English, Esperanto, Estonian, Finnish, French, German, Greek, Haitian creole, Hakka, Hebrew, Hindi, Hungarian, Indonesian, Italian, Irish, Japanese, Korean, Latin, Lithuanian, Norwegian, Occitan, Polish, Portuguese, Russian, Romanian, Sanskrit, Sardinian, Serbo-Croatian, Sicilian, Slovak, Spanish, Swahili, Swedish, Tagalog, Thai, Toki Pona, Tunisian Arabic, Turkish, Ukranian, Vietnamese, Welsh, Yoruba, Zulu
Drops, a vocab app: https://languagedrops.com/
Drops teaches vocab through pictures and matching and spelling games, though you can also customize your settings to show translations and different alphabets or not. The free tier has ads and a daily time limit. The lifetime subscription is technically against my personal rule for this post because it's $160 but it often goes on sale for half off or $80. There's also a monthly or yearly payment option. At the paid tier you can practice for an unlimited time without ads and choose which types of vocabulary words you want to learn.
Supported Languages: Ainu, English (American and British), Arabic (MSA), Bosnian, Portuguese (Brazilian and European), Cantonese, Spanish, (Castilian and Mexican), Catalan, Croatian, Danish, Dutch, Esperanto, Estonian, Finnish, French, Galacian, German, Greek, Hawaiian, Hebrew, Hindi, Hungarian, Icelandic, Igbo, Indonesian, Irish, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Mandarin, Maori, Norwegian, Persian, Polish, Romanian, Russian, Samoan, Sanskrit for yoga, Serbian, Swahili, Swedish, Tagalog, Thai, Turkish, Ukrainian, Vietnamese, Yoruba
Anki, a general flashcard app: https://apps.ankiweb.net/
You can make your own flashcards on Anki or download flashcard packs that other users have made. It also allows for importing of audio and visual aids. It has a spaced repetition system that a lot of people swear by. Some companies like Refold also sell premade flashcard packs specifically for Anki. Free on desktop, I believe about a $20 one time purchase on iOS.
Muzzy In GondoLand (1986): https://archive.org/details/muzzy-in-gondoland-level-i-1986
No, really! The old Muzzy movies from the 80s made to teach kids foreign languages are fairly easy to find for free on archive.org or on youtube. The new Muzzy with workbooks and an app and whatnot requires a paid subscription to the BBC but the older ones are much easier to find. They're available in English, Spanish, French, Italian, German, Chinese, Korean, Esperanto, and Welsh.
Easy Languages, a connected group of Youtube channels: https://www.easy-languages.org/
Easy Language channels are channels where people interview speakers of the language on the street about everyday topics like dating, tourism, and shopping for example. They have dual language subtitles in their videos in the target language and English. Many of them also have series about useful phrases for beginners and intermediate podcasts. Most also have bonus worksheets and other learning materials on their patreons but the free content available is already a lot.
Current active channels: Arabic, Catalan, Czech, Dutch, English, French, German, Greek, Italian, Polish, Portuguese, Russian, Spanish, Turkish
wordreference.com
A website that lets you look up words in another language. It's better than google translate. It has pronunciation in multiple dialects and in depth explanations that some other websites don't have.
Supported Languages: Spanish, French, Italian, Portuguese, German, Dutch, Swedish, Icelandic, Russian, Polish, Romanian, Czech, Greek, Turkish, Chinese, Japanese, Korean, Arabic
edX, a website for taking college courses, often for free: https://www.edx.org/learn/language
I can't tell you precisely what's available because it changes year to year but they usually offer a wide variety of courses. You can also often get real college credit through these if that's something you're interested in. Programming languages are often mixed in with spoken or signed languages though so you may have to do some digging through the lists to fins what you want.

The second house indicates what’s on you, with you, or generated by you. It deals with resources that keep you alive and functioning, so it also reveals the abilities required to generate these things. Your labor, your skills, your physical effort, your trade. It’s your tools, talents, and offerings that get exchanged for survival or stability.
It’s not about career (10H), passions(5H), or gifts from others (8H). It’s about how you produce, control, own, and can turn into survival, sustainability, and eventually wealth, from nothing but your essence. So it’s like your gut, resource base, harvest. That’s why it’s the house of “I have”.
» 2nd House in Aries
You’re not built to wait, you’re built to charge first, think later, and monetize through your energy, momentum, and nerve. The value you offer isnt softness, it’s force, action, and quick-start heat. People trust you when things are urgent. You get paid when others freeze. You’re instinct-driven, so your talents live in survival-based skills and adrenaline spaces.
Things you can pursue: personal training; boxing, MMA or self-defense coaching; high-speed freelance gigs; stunt work; solo business launches; pressure-based consulting; sports-based YouTube content; fast-paced reselling; fire-arts or pyrotechnic crafts; combat or emergency-response training; outdoor survival courses; leadership in risky or chaotic fields.
This works because Mars rules the 2H, so your value is pure motion. You don’t accumulate value, you ignite it. When you stop waiting and start acting, money flows.
» 2nd House in Taurus
You make money by bringing people back to their body. You thrive when you sell comfort, consistency, and sensory pleasure. You’re tuned to the pace of nature, and people pay for your ability to calm them, feed them, or bring them beauty that lasts. You don’t rush, you anchor, and that slowness is what makes you valuable.
Focus on: baking and comfort-food catering; skincare and herbalism; massage therapy; homemade soap or natural body care; gardening, farming, or flower arrangement; perfume blending; handmade clothes or ceramics; aesthetic YouTube/blog content; slow fashion or textile repair; brand consulting with a beauty focus; luxury thrift resale.
This works because Venus rules here, the Venus of soil, texture, and reliability. Your value doesn’t need to scream. It just needs to be felt.
» 2nd House in Gemini
You make money by moving information, ideas, and connections. You think fast, speak fast, and sell with your words, not with polish but with speed, wit, and adaptability. People don’t buy from you because you’re deep, they buy because you’re efficient, mentally alive, and plugged into what’s trending. You thrive in work that needs flexibility and talking, not perfection.
Monetize this by: copywriting; reselling or dropshipping; digital marketing; transcription; tutoring; podcasting; live hosting; short-form content creation; running newsletters; social media ghostwriting; flipping information into templates or digital products; workshop teaching; online arbitrage.
This works because Mercury rules here and Mercury doesn’t build, it connects and moves. You earn by being sharp, not settled.
» 2nd House in Cancer
You make money by nurturing, preserving, and giving people a sense of safety or belonging. You’re emotionally wired to feel what others need before they say it, and people pay for the feeling you create. Whether it’s food, care, or sacred space, you’re profitable when you tap into tenderness, memory, or home.
Go for: family-based businesses; doula or birth support; meal prepping; grief or trauma work; elder or childcare; womb wellness; handmade memory boxes or photo albums; domestic healing services (cooking, organizing); herbal tea blends; moon-based planning; ancestral work; protective crafts; home cooking shows.
This works because the Moon rules here, and the Moon holds, reflects, and responds. Your value is very relational and intuitive, not so much transactional.
» 2nd House in Leo
You make money by being seen. You offer the world your personality, shine, and magnetism, and people pay you to help them shine too. You’re not here to play it safe; you thrive when you lead, perform, and help others feel important. You’re most valuable in industries that reward boldness, presence, and confidence.
Try: acting; public speaking; children’s education or entertainment; fashion design or styling; branding and personal image work; YouTube or TikTok with strong visual identity; designing gold-toned products or “luxury” experiences; talent development; party planning; photo or video production; designing showpieces or centerpiece products.
This works because the Sun rules this house, and the Sun doesn’t blend in. It radiates. Your value shines brightest when you actually own the spotlight.
» 2nd House in Virgo
You earn through your ability to fix, clean, and perfect. You’re built to spot flaws and bring order to chaos. People pay you because you catch what everyone else overlooks. You’re most valuable where details, accuracy, and cleanliness matter. Your money comes from refining things, making them safer, clearer, or more useful.
Go into: editing, proofreading, transcription; herbal remedies or nutrition services; spreadsheet or database building; system organization; habit coaching; cleaning or detox services; planner or journal design; technical writing; wellness consulting; making workbooks or method-based tools; diagnostic services; VA work.
This works because Mercury rules here in earth mode. You don’t just think, you optimize things. Your value is about being practical, efficient, and fix-it-focused.
» 2nd House in Libra
You monetize through your ability to balance, beautify, and mediate. You’re naturally valuable when you’re helping people find their style, their peace, or their place. You thrive in relational or visual work that calls for grace and taste. You’re not built for mess, you shine when things are harmonious.
Try: fashion styling; interior design; event planning; brand visuals; relationship coaching; etiquette work; aesthetic consulting; jewelry design; couple-based content; wedding planning; high-end resale; social media curation; conflict resolution or facilitation services.
This works because Venus rules Libra, the Venus of symmetry and social connection. Your value comes from knowing how things should look, feel, and flow.
» 2nd House in Scorpio
You sell intensity, strategy, and transformation. People don’t come to you for surface-level stuff, they come for your ability to go all the way down and dig up truth. You’re valuable in high-stakes, high-emotion, or hidden work. You’re most profitable when you’re handling what others avoid, like pain, power, depth, or taboos.
Monetize this through: therapy or shadow work; sex education or intimacy coaching; occult research; investigative journalism; trauma work; death care or grief services; forensic fields; intuitive readings; emotional cleanup services (extraction, detox, cord cutting); helping people recover from breakdowns or losses.
This works because Mars rules here in its nocturnal mode, which is strategic, deep, and intense. You’re built to transform pain into power. :)
» 2nd House in Sagittarius
You make money by expanding people’s minds and breaking them out of boxes. Your value is your vision, your perspective, and your ability to connect the dots across time, cultures, or beliefs. People pay for your big-picture thinking, your stories, and your knowledge. This works when you’re in motion or exploring something real.
Focus on: teaching or tutoring; writing (especially essays or spiritual topics); outdoor guiding; creating belief-based content; language learning; travel blogging; online course creation; ethical business coaching; translating ideas into teachings; workshop leading; comedy with a message; philosophical merch.
This works because Jupiter rules here, which is the planet of meaning, growth, and teaching. You thrive when you help people see farther.
» 2nd House in Capricorn
You monetize through structure, ambition, and long-game focus. You build value like a mountain builds height, slow, steady, unshakable. People pay for your discipline and your ability to handle what’s heavy or serious. You’re most valuable when responsibility is involved.
Try: business planning; accounting or budgeting; construction or renovation work; long-term investing; systems design; eldercare or estate management; corporate consulting; structural coaching; digital product architecture; mentorship programs; real estate work; time management or goal tracking tools.
This works because Saturn rules this house, which preserves, hardens, and endures. You’re not the flashiest, you’re typically the one who lasts.
» 2nd House in Aquarius
You make money by being different, futuristic, and community-minded. Your value isn’t in fitting in, it’s in standing out and breaking systems that no longer work. People pay for your weird genius, especially when it helps them belong to something better.
Focus on: tech-based design; social media strategy; niche or alt content; astrology or futurism; digital product creation; community building platforms; AI-based services; protest gear or radical wellness tools; open-source project work; network systems; innovation consulting; experimental art.
This works because Saturn rules here too, but in air, so it’s more cold and conceptual. You build by breaking molds, not following them.
» 2nd House in Pisces
You sell dream, spirit, and softness. Your value comes from your ability to flow, to channel what’s unspoken and emotional. People come to you for atmosphere, empathy, and escape. You’re not here to be literal, you’re here to help people feel.
Monetize this through: art or music; film scoring or editing; intuitive reading; dream work; scent blending; ocean or water-based products; abstract visuals; poetry or lyric writing; ritual creation; sanctuary design; sound healing; cinematic editing or storytelling; spiritual guidance; working with animals or oceanic life.
This works because Jupiter rules here in traditional astrology, but the Jupiter of vision and transcendence. You monetize meaning that can’t be explained, only felt.

Why the scope of bullying in the Buddie fandom is unparalleled, Exhibit A: In 24 hours, 100K people circulated a complete lie about LFJ to justify further harassment of him.
This video of Bobby's funeral scene was posted online. Then someone reposted and claimed that in the video, Lou can be heard yelling at craft services and that Ryan swooped in to save the day.
Tumblr media
Then Drake Goldwin, who posts incessantly about his hatred for both Tommy and Lou, posted this "transcript" based on what he "heard" which if you watch the video is absolutely nothing. He wasn't there. The source is 'trust this magical frequency only I can hear bro.'
Tumblr media
So why does something so stupid matter this much? Look at the numbers on these. 16,000 people liked a very obvious lie about a real person between just these three retweets alone, and there are thousands of retweets. Oliver's "stare of hatred" is for the random paparazzi who live streamed them filming for hours, who kept shouting "Buddie canon" at them to hype up their viewers who kept commenting that.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
This lie then got picked up on TikTok, and these three videos alone got a combined 67,000 likes. There's dozens of these. Then it was 'legitimized' when it was mentioned in an article published on Decider by their senior writer/known Buddie fan.
In reality, THIS was them the day of filming. There's plenty of videos too.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Again, here's the video just to remind everyone none of this actually happened. Lou was not caught on camera yelling at craft services. Ryan did not swoop in to save the day. What actually happened is that a bunch of Buddie fans wrote RPF on main, passed it off as truth and then a 100K people ran with it. Between X and TikTok at least a million people saw it. That's not an exaggeration, you can see the numbers for yourself. Of course this resulted in weeks worth of Lou being tagged in hate posts related to this.
So yes, this entire thing is so stupid it makes my brain hurt to even talk about it. But people need to understand the issue within the Buddie fandom isn't just the bullying, but the scope of bullying taking place.

My Complete High School Transcript
This was for a new reality I created a bit ago that was sort of going to be "revenge", as I put it, before I finally permashift to my desired reality. But now that I'm not feral anymore, I thought it'd be best to not let the reality go completely to waste. A homage if you will. Context: I used to be a gifted child with "so much potential". Therefore, in honor of this deep-seated desire for academic validation here were going to be my unofficial overqualified high school years in a nutshell.
As @hrrtshape said it best, "I'll permashift when it stops feeling like a betrayal," but, in retrospect, shifting here would have felt more like living long enough to see myself become the villain.

I hate to be the bearer of frustrating news, but in case some of you who frequent Founders Online (like I do) and have noticed an extreme spike of 503 “Service Temporarily Unavailable” errors, making access to the site impossible for periods of time, the team posted the explanation below:
Tumblr media
Founders Online performance issues
19 May 2025: Founders Online is experiencing periodic degraded performance owing to extreme spikes in traffic caused by excessive website crawling, associated with content scooping from AI platforms and other indexers. We are working on a viable fix within the constraints of our server resources.
This is very unfortunate and very disgusting. I’m glad that they are trying to fix the issue, but it breaks my heart that they even have to put in the effort. From personal experience working as a student technician in my university’s Preservation Department, where my primary task is to digitize all sorts of old materials—books, newspapers, photographs, etc, and collaborate on how those items should be handled and scanned so that their digital copies can be presented and made accessible in the right ways, it takes A LOT of work just to digitize one item. Almost all of the documents you see on Founders Online are digital copies of the book pages from where these transcriptions originated—series’ of the founders papers that were printed in the last 70-80 years by university presses. Books that, when Founders was launched 15 years ago, were all between a few years and many decades old, and difficult for the general public to access. Of course, I don’t know the Founders team’s exact process for making the archive when they first started, nor do I claim to be the preservation expert by any stretch of the imagination, but I have a big hunch that it took many hundreds of hours, and likely continues to do so for the remaining volumes they intend to add to the site, to make Founders Online as it appears and maintain its usually fast performance.
AI in general frustrates me, but to see that this extremely valuable archive has now gotten caught in the scooping net makes me equally sad and angry. If you want to gather documents from the site, but will later be offline, you have the ability through the site to download PDF files of individual documents and print them. Most of the material is also in the public domain as well (not all, however—any annotations to a document are copyright of the institution which originally published those physical volumes I mentioned). AI scooping this archive for information to feed to language learning models is a waste of time, energy, and money, and is a violation of copyright law. At the risk of causing performance issues and affecting the servers that make Founders possible, this activity is potentially detrimental to historic preservation and access to historical knowledge. Those hundreds of hours the teams behind the site have worked also come into play: this site is their baby, their hard work, and it’s being stolen. And as a result, everyone’s ability to easily use the site without issue is being affected.
I am extremely fortunate to be in a position where I have been able to acquire a personal backup system for what I primarily use Founders for (my volumes of The Papers of Alexander Hamilton), and more so in that through my university, I have access to the rest of the physical series that make up the archive. So this current issue with the site being slow on performance and frequently down does not inconvenience me much. But this is a privilege. Founders Online was created to get around that privilege and allow for everyone (with an Internet connection) to access these important historical documents. I cannot hammer down to you just how important and valuable that is. Founders Online is an invaluable resource that deserves to be maintained and protected. I’m thankful that the team behind it are working diligently to do just that, but they should never have had to combat AI stealing their hard work and affecting the usability of the site in the first place.

UPDATE : 1/17/25 .
I was really trying to avoid this, but I'm just at a point where I don't know what to do. I am currently -$104.71 in the bank and I am not making enough money to bring it back into the positive.
Tumblr media
Here is the current situation with my job:
Last year, in October, I began working for my local newspaper. However, I am not an official employee. Instead, I am working through a vocational rehabilitation program set up by my local Workforce Center. This means that while I work for the paper, I am actually getting paid my wages through the Workforce Center. This is a 12-week program, wherein after the 12 weeks, I am to go under review to see if I qualify for another 12 weeks. After which, the paper will either have to hire me on as an official employee or I will have to look elsewhere for work.
As of December 31, 2024, my first 12 weeks has ended and I am currently waiting on review. In the meantime, I am still writing an article here and there and proofreading, but not nearly at the capacity I was prior.
I live in income-based housing, and have reduced my bills as much as I can, and I am receiving SNAP benefits and going to local food banks when I can. I am also looking for other work in case I am not approved for another 12-week program. In the interim, however, I am desperately trying to get my balance out of the negatives.
Unfortunately, with my current mental and physical health ( which I am in the process of applying for disability ), I cannot reliably offer graphic commissions right now. However, since it is my day job anyway, I can offer proofreading and editing services. I have a bachelor's degree in English and completed an online course in proofreading and copyediting.
If there's something you've written and plan to publish or submit ( online or otherwise ), please hit me up — I'd be happy to help! This can be anything! Academic papers ( I will proofread academic papers, but I will not edit them for you ), manuscripts, blog posts, websites, magazine articles, legal transcripts, resume writing, etc. I've been trying to bulk up my portfolio, so this would be a great opportunity for me to do that. We can discuss rates and pay privately either through Tumblr IMs or Discord, which you can ask me for.
If proofreading and editing services don't interest you and any of you would be willing to help out by donating, I would be truly appreciative and will include PayPal and CashApp links below. Even just spreading this around would help.
Thank you, guys.

Doreen Valiente: Witch Book Review
Tumblr media
I happened upon this book in a used bookstore in town a few years ago. It's true that Doreen Valiente was a large influence on modern witchcraft in the 20th century. I had to read it. So here are my current thoughts on her biography.

Published 2016
"Heralded as one of the greatest figures in the history of modern witchcraft, Doreen Valiente made an unparalleled contribution to contemporary spiritual practice. This book tells her fascinating story, from her earliest encounters with the Craft to her work with Gerald Gardner and her emergence as one of the foremost thinkers in the revival of Paganism and witchcraft. Revealing previously unknown details drawn from firsthand testimony and her personal papers, Doreen Valiente, Witch reveals how Valiente's singular vision captivated millions of modern witches and Pagans around the world."

What I Liked
I am just so impressed with the research that went into this book. There are so many primary sources, it would make any history professors head spin. Not only are there communications between the author and people who knew Doreen, but Heselton included quotes from personal letters between Doreen and others, family pictures from when she was young, interviews with Doreen (including one radio transcript from BBC World Service), references to Doreen's own books (especially Rebirth of Witchcraft), the Doreen Valiente Foundation, publications such as the Pentagram (a witchcraft magazine popular in the 50's and 60's for the most part), transcripts from her talks at places such as the Pagan Federation, and much more. He even searched through public records to find family connections and information on her time in the ISOS (Intelligence Section Oliver Strachey) during WWII.
Heselton also doesn't shy away from the more rough aspects of Doreen's personality and history. Such as her brief participation in a nationalist group or her domineering nature (which isn't necessarily a bad thing though it may rub others the wrong way).
✩₊˚.⋆☾⋆⁺₊✧
What I Didn't Like
Going back to Doreen's participation in the nationalist group, the author does try to come up with an excuse for her interest in the group. Such as that she was perhaps working for the government as a way to keep an eye on the group (as per her WWII status). Without any substantial evidence towards this, I do feel the author is throwing some wishful thinking in (or maybe I just don't understand what the ISOS is exactly).
✩₊˚.⋆☾⋆⁺₊✧
Overall Thoughts
Doreen had her hands in all aspects of the modern witchcraft movement, from Wicca to trad craft. She was in correspondence with some of the most influential people of the early and late 20th century when it comes to our movement, and of course was incredibly influential herself. If you've ever read through the Charge of the Goddess or included it into one of your books, you have Doreen to thank. She also wrote the Witch's Rune, which many people chant without realizing where it comes from. Learning about Doreen as a person has been incredibly eye opening and I do suggest that everyone learn more about her.
✩₊˚.⋆☾⋆⁺₊✧
Conclusion
While some biographies can be a slog to get through, I will say this one was not. If you are interested in reading this book you can find it on Amazon, the Doreen Valiente Foundation, Reiter's books, and a few others.

Royal Navy Records
Thought I'd try here: I am researching the careers of the Franklin Expedition. I am looking for service records of the crew and muster lists for related ships. I have started with what's scanned online from the Kew National Archives, but if this work has already been done I'd love to find it.
I started transcribing what's online of ADM 196 (Royal Navy officers), but the scans and/or records themselves seem to incomplete. (Non-officers are of course much harder to find as well.) If anyone is aware of existing transcriptions or other resources I'd be very grateful!
I'd also like to contribute to a wider effort like Global Maritime History or Naval-History.net for ~1815-45 if one exists!
Edited to add a link to a post that goes into a little more detail about the purpose of the project, and where I'll be collecting resources as I find them: Franklin Expedition Careers Project

Can someone check me on if my stance related to a professor at my university (at the bottom, I'm trying to make this as neutral as I can) is reasonable? I need as removed and neutral a stance as I can manage, because it feels like the only people who have enough context are already too polarized. Also this isn't about the employability or reasonability of if this person should lose their job, they have tenure anyways, but this isn't about that. The reasons listed below the cut go towards my final stance.
There's a professor at my university who spent five hours last semester explaining choices they made that are rather substantially different from the choices made in similar veins in other classes, as it comes to exam administration, homework assignment layout and submission, to two students who took the class last spring semester. (This class is offered once a year and is required. I am not in it, but I know 7 students who are taking it this semester.) Also, the class is an undergraduate Modern Physics course (it matters a bit for one or two of the points). We only have one, if you have two I think it's approximately equivalent to the first one.
I understand this professor has put a lot of effort in and does think about what they're doing.
That being said, the following is a list of known issues related to what feels like the most basic expectations of that students have had with this professor in just the time I have been at my undergraduate institution:
It being such a known issue getting an e-mail response in a reasonable manner from this professor as a student in one of their classes that there is a meme among students in the department to start the subject line of any email sent to this professor with the word "research", regardless of topic, to get them to respond.
In three OTHER classes than the class that is currently the issue, this professor has the known issue of not giving homework or grades back. In all cases, the grades were separated out and listed on the online web service (Canvas, Blackboard type deal), but never filled in prior to the end of the semester, with the grade only truly being known after transcripts were formalized.
The last time the class currently the issue was offered, the students had to practically beg the professor to give them back graded homework assignments before each exam. The professor had an overall return rate before each exam of approximately 50%, whereas for most of the other major classes in the department, the return rate for each exam is 90-100%. Our department is not large. The seven people I know in the class ARE the entirety of the class.
This time around, the professor has decided to administer the course content separated between exams and homeworks. The homeworks do not build up content and conceptual knowledge for the exams, as they are on other material. I believe this change is new this semester, so there IS a chance that it turns out that the homeworks end up being a lot shorter, BUT:
The professor is trying to fit too much content into one class. I say this understanding that the motivation is "trying to get people to see fields of physics they probably wouldn't see otherwise in the student's tenure at the university." My problem with this is that this professor teaches the survey/research interest course offered to freshmen the first semester. Some people drop the major quickly because they grasp that it's not right for them, which is fine. But some people, who are interested in physics, drop the major sheerly because of the lack of structure and inability to follow what was happening in that class. Given that this professor requested specifically to teach that class, I do not understand why they do not include more structure in that initial class (and they again, MAY HAVE REASONS for why the class is as freeform as it is now, but it clearly IS NOT WORKING). Professors I have talked to at both my university and numerous other universities, including the one who taught me the class at this university (who is not this professor), have said that Modern Physics usually has a few specific topics covered, with high consistency, and this professor is covering easily twice that.
The professor told one of their research advisees to not put anything on their research poster they would be presenting that they did not understand. This is sensible advice! I agree! After that student finished their poster and submitted it for revision, the professor revised it, adding a bunch of stuff that the student did not understand, and changing "approximately 75% of the language because it didn't sound physicsy enough", and sent it back for review. The student didn't respond for a few hours, because they were busy (something this professor has a hard time acknowledging with respect to students, going so far as to tell a student who did not have time to spend 10 hours a week on homework assignments that he was not busy because the professor was busy). With the conference coming up soon, and the posters having to be printed, the professor sent the poster off for printing, and also added an ugly gradient to the background of the poster. This legitimately gave that student a panic attack, and as far as I know, the professor never really said anything about what they had done or acknowledged it (and I'm not even sure if they EVER found out). Compared to this professor, the students being advised by other professors had their posters double checked and drafted multiple times before being sent off for printing. This professor ALSO only acknowledged the quality of their report presentations for the work they did over the summer for the grant funding them the day before the presentations. Those presentation slides were due to the organizer 8 days before the professor made that comment. The professor pretty much only called them terrible.
I have been told by at least one other professor who has worked with this professor for ten years at this university, if not more (I don't remember exactly), that they are not sure if this professor realizes that the department they are in is an undergraduate-only department, and feel that the massive difference in demeanor between them and others in the department is probably, in part, a result of that.
I really want to say something positive to juxtapose the massive amount of commentary above in the professor's favor, but beyond "This professor clearly does care about trying to improve the quality of education," there just isn't really anything that can actually be truly said. I know at least 10 students who have EXPLICITLY told me they have quit our university's physics department because of this professor specifically. I don't think this professor knows this, but I also happen to know that they have some shockingly weirdly ableist opinions, like "if I (someone in reasonably good physical health) can make it across campus in 10 minutes, so can you." said to a student who did not have outright disability accommodations but could not reasonably make it across campus in time. (This feels like "scientific management" in the Industrial Revolution to me)
So like... is it reasonable for me to have a distrust/find these good intents disingenuous, at least in some capacity? To me, there feels like a clear gap present, but because of just... certain inexplicable things, I feel the need to ask.

If you're looking for something you haven't seen on this list yet, check these sources:
Open Source Textbooks:
That website has free, open source textbooks about science (including bio, chem, physics, anatomy, astronomy, psych and sociology, etc) business/economics, world history, and math. My college bio professor used their textbooks, and I thought they were pretty clear and concise. Most science and business subjects also have a variety of levels of difficulty, so you can get into the nitty gritty details as much as you want to (or not). Most of the textbook links in this post link here, so check out the rest of their library.
Khan Academy:
They have a ton of full courses on every basic school subject with lecture videos, readings, and quizzes at the high school / college intro level. (Plus math from elementary school and science from middle school). They also have coding, financial literacy, and pixar animation.
Crash Course:
Quick video lectures about most school subjects with helpful animations and a few jokes to really stick things in your memory in the shortest time possible. If they talk too fast for you, you can reduce the playback speed on youtube under settings.
Learning to Cook:
The previously mentioned flavor bootcamp also has a website, and a podcast. The bootcamp does seem to be the best place to start, though.
Good Eats:
Good primer on the basic science of cooking. My mom, who left her parents' house not knowing how to cook, swears by this show. She was also an award winning professional baker for many years, so like I'd trust her.
Available free on youtube from the creators here and here.
America's Test Kitchen:
Recipes for all sorts of things, with some of the science behind them explained. They do more explanation for their more basic tutorial recipes, but some do get a bit more complicated than I'd recommend to absolute beginners. A lot of their website is for subscribers only, which is why I would focus on their youtube channel. You can check the transcript to put together a written recipe. Their cookbooks are best for intermediate cooks who want to understand the why behind a recipe, as most of their recipes are on the complicated side.
I'd specifically recommend this video about learning to read a recipe, which is an important first step if you want to dive right into cooking dinner tonight.
Haven's Kitchen:
I actually found this group from their cookbook, The Haven's Kitchen Cooking School, which I'd recommend if you have access to it. It has a good structure to it, and explains basic recipes in a way I was confident following. Their website also has a few basic cooking technique videos up for free.
I'd also recommend Baker Bettie's Better Baking Book, because it handles basic techniques and master recipes very clearly. (It doesn't provide resources for gluten free baking, but one book can't do everything well.)
Finally:
Your local library's webpage will probably have a ton of different resources. Mine has a free movie streaming service, a language learning website, a connection to libby (a free online library you can use with your library card), various academic databases, and more.
Want to learn something new in 2022??
