Navigating the World of Online Payment Processing
The world of commerce has undergone a remarkable transformation with the rise of e-commerce, and at the heart of this evolution is online payment processing. From purchasing products and services online to managing subscriptions and making digital donations, online payment processing has become an integral part of our daily lives. In this comprehensive guide, we will delve into the intricacies of online payment processing, exploring its significance, the key players in the industry, security measures, and the latest trends shaping the future of digital payments.
The Significance of Online Payment Processing
Online payment processing is the engine driving e-commerce and digital transactions. Its importance extends far beyond the convenience it offers. Here are some of the key reasons why online payment processing is crucial:
Global Reach: It enables businesses to reach customers worldwide, breaking down geographical barriers and expanding their customer base.
Convenience: Customers can make payments and purchases from the comfort of their homes or on the go, making the shopping experience more convenient.
Security: Secure payment processing ensures that sensitive financial information is protected, reducing the risk of fraud and unauthorized access.
Efficiency: The automation of payment processing streamlines financial transactions, reducing manual labor and processing times.
Business Growth: Online payment processing supports the growth of online businesses, enabling them to scale their operations and reach new markets.
Diverse Payment Options: It offers a wide range of payment methods, allowing customers to choose the option that best suits their preferences and needs.
The Key Players in Online Payment Processing
Online payment processing involves several key players, each with distinct roles and responsibilities. Understanding these players is crucial to grasp the intricacies of the payment ecosystem:
1. Merchants
Merchants are businesses or individuals who sell products or services online. They integrate payment gateways into their websites or applications to accept payments from customers.
2. Payment Gateways
Payment gateways are intermediaries that facilitate the transfer of payment data between the merchant and the financial institution. They verify the transaction, handle the encryption of data, and ensure that the payment is securely processed.
3. Acquiring Banks
Acquiring banks, also known as merchant banks, are financial institutions that work with merchants to provide them with the necessary accounts and tools for accepting payments. They play a critical role in authorizing and settling transactions.
4. Issuing Banks
Issuing banks are the financial institutions that issue credit and debit cards to consumers. They are responsible for authorizing transactions initiated by cardholders and ensuring there are sufficient funds for the purchase.
5. Card Networks
Card networks, such as Visa, MasterCard, and American Express, establish the rules and infrastructure that govern payment card transactions. They facilitate communication between acquiring and issuing banks.
6. Customers
Customers are the individuals or businesses making purchases or payments online. They provide their payment information to complete transactions.
Ensuring Security in Online Payment Processing
Security is a paramount concern in online payment processing. As the digital landscape evolves, so do the threats to security. Here are some of the key security measures and technologies in place to safeguard online transactions:
1. Data Encryption
Data encryption ensures that sensitive payment information, such as credit card numbers, remains secure during transmission. Secure Sockets Layer (SSL) encryption is a common technology used to protect data.
2. Tokenization
Tokenization replaces sensitive card data with tokens, which are useless to cybercriminals if intercepted. This adds an extra layer of security to payment processing.
3. Two-Factor Authentication
Two-factor authentication (2FA) requires customers to provide additional verification, such as a one-time code sent to their mobile device, to complete a transaction.
4. Fraud Detection
Advanced fraud detection systems use artificial intelligence and machine learning to analyze transaction data in real-time and identify potentially fraudulent activities.
5. Regular Updates
Payment processing systems should be regularly updated to patch vulnerabilities and ensure that they are up to date with the latest security standards.
6. Compliance with Regulations
Adhering to industry and regional regulations, such as the Payment Card Industry Data Security Standard (PCI DSS), is essential to maintain security.
Trends Shaping the Future of Online Payment Processing
Online payment processing is an ever-evolving field. Several trends are shaping the future of digital payments:
1. Contactless Payments
Contactless payments, made through mobile wallets and near-field communication (NFC) technology, have gained popularity due to their speed and convenience. The use of smartphones for payments is on the rise.
2. Biometric Authentication
Biometric authentication, such as fingerprint and facial recognition, is increasingly used for secure and convenient payment authorization.
3. Cryptocurrency
Cryptocurrencies like Bitcoin are gaining acceptance as a means of payment, offering fast and borderless transactions.
4. In-App Payments
In-app payments within mobile applications provide a seamless purchasing experience for users, making it easier to complete transactions without leaving the app.
5. Enhanced Security Measures
Continual advancements in security measures, including machine learning-based fraud detection and risk analysis, will help reduce the risk of fraudulent transactions.
6. Cross-Border Payments
As businesses expand globally, cross-border payment solutions are becoming more vital. Payment processors are adapting to accommodate international transactions and currencies.
7. Payment Integration
E-commerce platforms and online businesses are increasingly integrating payment solutions directly into their platforms, streamlining the payment process for customers.
Choosing the Right Online Payment Processing Solution
Selecting the right online payment processing solution is crucial for businesses. Here are some key considerations to keep in mind:
1. Integration
Choose a payment solution that seamlessly integrates with your e-commerce platform or website. This ensures a smooth checkout experience for your customers.
2. Security
Security
is a non-negotiable aspect of online payment processing. Ensure that the solution you choose complies with industry standards, such as PCI DSS, and offers robust encryption and fraud prevention measures.
3. Payment Options
Consider the range of payment options the solution supports. The more options you provide, the more accessible your business will be to a broader customer base.
4. Scalability
Opt for a payment processing solution that can scale with your business. As your business grows, the payment solution should be able to handle increased transaction volumes.
5. Reporting and Analytics
Access to reporting and analytics tools can provide valuable insights into customer behavior, transaction trends, and financial performance. Choose a solution that offers comprehensive reporting capabilities.
6. Customer Support
A responsive customer support team can be invaluable in resolving issues quickly and ensuring that your payment processing runs smoothly. Consider the quality of customer support provided by the payment solution.
7. Costs and Fees
Different payment processors may have varying fee structures. Ensure that you understand the pricing model and any additional fees associated with the solution. Consider how the costs align with your business's budget.
8. Reputation
Research the reputation of the payment processing solution. Read reviews, ask for recommendations, and assess its track record in terms of reliability and security.
The Evolution of Online Payment Processing
Online payment processing has come a long way from its early days, and its journey continues. As technology advances and consumer preferences shift, the landscape of digital payments will keep evolving. Businesses that embrace the latest trends and invest in secure and convenient payment solutions are better positioned to thrive in the digital age.
The significance of online payment processing in today's world cannot be overstated. It has revolutionized the way we shop, transact, and do business, making life more convenient for consumers and enabling the growth of countless online enterprises. As we look to the future, the trends in online payment processing, from contactless payments to cryptocurrency, will shape the way we make payments and conduct financial transactions. By staying informed, adapting to these trends, and choosing the right payment processing solution, businesses can ensure a seamless and secure payment experience for their customers and position themselves for success in the evolving digital economy.

Still standing
On the afternoon of April 14th, a hacker using a UK IP address exploited an out-of-date software package on one of 4chan's servers, via a bogus PDF upload. With this entry point, they were eventually able to gain access to one of 4chan's servers, including database access and access to our own administrative dashboard. The hacker spent several hours exfiltrating database tables and much of 4chan's source code. When they had finished downloading what they wanted, they began to vandalize 4chan at which point moderators became aware and 4chan's servers were halted, preventing further access.
Over the following days, 4chan's development team surveyed the damage, which to be frank, was catastrophic. While not all of our servers were breached, the most important one was, and it was due to simply not updating old operating systems and code in a timely fashion. Ultimately this problem was caused by having insufficient skilled man-hours available to update our code and infrastructure, and being starved of money for years by advertisers, payment providers, and service providers who had succumbed to external pressure campaigns.
We had begun a process of speccing new servers in late 2023. As many have suspected, until that time 4chan had been running on a set of servers purchased second-hand by moot a few weeks before his final Q&A, as prior to then we simply were not in a financial position to consider such a large purchase. Advertisers and payment providers willing to work with 4chan are rare, and are quickly pressured by activists into cancelling their services. Putting together the money for new equipment took nearly a decade.
In April of 2024 we had agreed on specs and began looking for possible suppliers. Money is always tight for us, and few companies were willing to sell us servers, so actually buying the hardware wasn’t a trivial problem. We managed to finalize a purchase in June, and had the new servers racked and online in July. Over the next few months we slowly moved functionality onto the new servers, but we had still been relying on the old servers for key functions. Everything about this process took much longer than intended, which is a recurring theme in this debacle. The free time that 4chan's development team had available to dedicate to 4chan was insufficient to update our software and infrastructure fast enough, and our luck ran out.
However, we have not been idle during our nearly two weeks of downtime. The server that was breached has been replaced, with the operating system and code updated to the latest versions. PDF uploads have been temporarily disabled on those boards that supported them, but they will be back in the near future. One slow but much beloved board, /f/ - Flash, will not be returning however, as there is no realistic way to prevent similar exploits using .swf files. We are bringing on additional volunteer developers to help keep up with the workload, and our team of volunteer janitors & moderators remains united despite the grievous violations some have suffered to their personal privacy.
4chan is back. No other website can replace it, or this community. No matter how hard it is, we are not giving up.

"The majority of high-tech patent lawsuits are brought by patent trolls—companies that exist not to provide products or services, but primarily have a business using patents to threaten others’ work. Some politicians are proposing to make that bad situation worse. ...
The Patent Eligibility Restoration Act, S. 2140, (PERA), sponsored by Senators Thom Tillis (R-NC) and Chris Coons (D-DE) would be a huge gift to patent trolls, a few tech firms that aggressively license patents, and patent lawyers. For everyone else, it will be a huge loss. That’s why we’re opposing it, and asking our supporters to speak out as well.
Patent trolling is still a huge, multi-billion dollar problem that’s especially painful for small businesses and everyday internet users. But, in the last decade, we’ve made modest progress placing limits on patent trolling. The Supreme Court’s 2014 decision in Alice v. CLS Bank barred patents that were nothing more than abstract ideas with computer jargon added in. Using the Alice test, federal courts have kicked out a rogue’s gallery of hundreds of the worst patents.
Under Alice’s clear rules, courts threw out ridiculous patents on “matchmaking”, online picture menus, scavenger hunts, and online photo contests. The nation’s top patent court, the Federal Circuit, actually approved a patent on watching an ad online twice before the Alice rules finally made it clear that patents like that cannot be allowed. The patents on “bingo on a computer?” Gone under Alice. Patents on loyalty programs (on a computer)? Gone. Patents on upselling (with a computer)? All gone. ...
PERA’s attempt to roll back progress goes beyond computer technology. For almost 30 years, some biotech and pharmaceutical companies actually applied for, and were granted, patents on naturally occuring human genes. As a consequence, companies were able to monopolize diagnostic tests that relied on naturally occurring genes in order to help predict diseases such as breast cancer, making such testing far more expensive. The ACLU teamed up with doctors to confront this horrific practice, and sued. That lawsuit led to a historic victory in 2013 when the Supreme Court disallowed patents on human genes found in nature.
If PERA passes, it will explicitly overturn that ruling, allowing human genes to be patented once again. ...
“To See Your Own Blood, Your Own Genes”
From the 1980s until the 2013 Myriad decision, the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office granted patents on human genomic sequences. If researchers “isolated” the gene—a necessary part of analysis—they would then get a patent that described isolating, or purified, as a human process, and insist they weren’t getting a patent on the natural world itself.
But this concept of patenting an “isolated” gene was simply a word game, and a distinction without a difference. With the genetic patent in hand, the patent-holder could demand royalty payments from any kind of test or treatment involving that gene. And that’s exactly what Myriad Genetic did when they patented the BRCA1 and BRCA2 gene sequences, which are important indicators for the prevalence of breast or ovarian cancer.
Myriad’s patents significantly increased the cost of those tests to U.S. patients. The company even sent some doctors cease and desist letters, saying the doctors could not perform simple tests on their own patients—even looking at the gene sequences without Myriad’s permission would constitute patent infringement.
This behavior caused pathologists, scientists, and patients to band together with ACLU lawyers and challenge Myriad’s patents. They litigated all the way to the Supreme Court, and won. “A naturally occurring DNA segment is a product of nature and not patent eligible merely because it has been isolated,” the Supreme Court stated in Association for Molecular Pathology v. Myriad Genetics.
A practice like granting and enforcing patents on human genes should truly be left in the dustbin of history. It’s shocking that pro-patent lobbyists have convinced these Senators to introduce legislation seeking to reinstate such patents. Last month, the President of the College of American Pathologists published an op-ed reminding lawmakers and the public about the danger of patenting the human genome, calling gene patents “dangerous to the public welfare.”
As Lisbeth Ceriani, a breast cancer survivor and a plaintiff in the Myriad case said, “It’s a basic human right to see your own blood, your own genes.” "

I've been trying out Plottr and I really like it, the featureset jives really well with how I outline and what information I want around in that process and how I want to manipulate it.
You'd think that would be enough for me to recommend it, but for some reason it's followed suit with the enshittification of the internet and the primary way to access it is a subscription service. It's a fuckin' piece of software that you download to your computer and has files stored locally. It is feature complete and a full release so there is no real excuse for a subscription-oriented model except the company realising that a drip feed from your wallet is more profitable than selling you a piece of software that does not need any upgrades. The website attempts to justify this by saying 'lifetime updates' are included but it is currently fully functioning as is so I question the value proposition of paying in perpetuity to use a program on my computer to access and interact with files stored on my computer.
(There is an online version as well. I understand subscription models in this case as this is an area where continued development and maintenance are required, as well as server costs for your files etc.)
But, you say! There is a lifetime license! Problem solved!
It is two hundred fucking united states dollars.
I am in a good financial position these days. I can spend money on stupid shit I want. But I cannot get past the audacity of charging $200 for what should be the default fucking option for owning software.
There's nothing that quite does what Plottr does, at least that I've found. But for some comparison:
Scrivener is $59.99 once-off and is probably the best writing-oriented program out there
Aeon Timeline is $65 once-off including a year of free updates
Campfire Blaze honestly has a payment structure I am sideeyeing but at least you can get a lifetime license tailored to what you need out of the program and characters + timeline is still cheaper than Plottr
Wavemaker is donationware
Metos is a subscription model, but has Web-only considerations mentioned above, specific plans for features in development, and is $24 annually rather than $150
The entire Microsoft Office suite is $149.99. Between Word, Excel, and OneNote you could definitely figure something out from a writing perspective and also have all the functionality of a full suite of office software FOR LESS MONEY THAN PLOTTR.
There are of course a wide array of free softwares (Google docs/sheets, Libre Office, etc) but I specifically wanted to call out paid options here to demonstrate how ridiculous their pricing structure is
I dunno man. People are allowed to charge whatever they want for the things that they make, but this is just so blatantly out of step with the market that I can only assume the lifetime license price is specifically aimed at deterring lifetime purchases and extracting the maximum amount of money possible from their target market through subscriptions instead. I feel a particular kind of way about that target market being writers, a group notoriously not known for their financial stability.
Fuck subscription services with no ongoing value proposition taking over how we access software and fuck every company that makes the revenue-driven decision to engage in this tactic. Even if your motivations are honourable (we have people to pay! you want us to be able to pay our hard-working employees, right?) you are pursuing those goals through nothing less than the exploitation of your customers for maximum financial gain.

When the claims representative, whom I’ll call Steven, sat down at his computer around 7:15 A.M. last week, he had already been awake for an hour and a half. The morning routine for him and his family is best described as “fend for yourself,” he said. That day, he waited for his older son to shower before taking his turn; neither he nor his wife had time for breakfast. He had joined the Social Security Administration two decades ago, and came to specialize in one of its more complex and lesser-known functions: providing a form of welfare called Supplemental Security Income, or S.S.I., to people who are disabled or extremely poor. But the S.S.A. is so understaffed that Steven does a bit of everything. “My job is to be kind of like an octopus,” he said. The agency’s administrative budget had not kept up with its rising workload as more people aged into retirement. Now news outlets were reporting that President Donald Trump and Elon Musk, via Musk’s DOGE outfit, planned to fire up to half of the agency’s sixty-thousand-odd employees. (The S.S.A. later said that its goal was to lose seven thousand.) DOGE had also gained access to S.S.A. databases. “We don’t know how long we’ll be here,” Steven said. “Some people are really pissed. Others are sad and emotional. Others are making plans.” A couple days earlier, Trump had delivered a long self-congratulatory speech to Congress, in which he accused the S.S.A. of “shocking levels of incompetence and probable fraud.”
Steven lives in a Midwestern town near where he was born and raised, which means that he occasionally recognizes a relative or a family friend in a case file and has to recuse himself. Three days a week, he’s at a cubicle in a regional field office, one of twelve hundred across the U.S. The other two days, he works from home, at a plastic folding table in the corner of his bedroom. He was on the early shift. His laptop was propped up on a neon-green bin, the kind typically used to store Legos or crayons. It was flanked by two large monitors, creating a triptych. All around him were piles of kids’ clothes and books. Near his left foot was a tiny metal car; he had taped yellow notecards reading “clock,” “fan,” and “shelf” to a clock, fan, and shelf for the benefit of his youngest child, who was learning to read. Steven’s wife made drop-offs at kindergarten and day care, then came home. She has her own office setup downstairs.
The day officially started when Steven logged on to a dozen software programs. One had a blocky monochrome interface that looked like it was from the late nineties. Another was labelled “Workload Action Center,” in a light-brown, slanted font of a similar vintage. Steven kept a list of his passwords, which he had to routinely update, on a scrap of paper next to his keyboard. He scanned something called a “Tickle List” that highlighted urgent cases. His primary task was to conduct nonmedical “redetermination” interviews (code: “RZ”)—part of the S.S.A.’s process for insuring that current recipients are still eligible to receive benefits. More than seven million Americans of all ages count on S.S.I., and sixty-eight million seniors receive earned retirement payments. Social Security is the largest government program in the country and most recipients’ main source of income. It was envisioned by Frances Perkins during the Great Depression. “Redeterminations are the highest priority,” Steven said. “We should have three to five people on them at every office. Sometimes there’s only one.”
He put on a wireless headset that connected to his laptop and an online phone system. The first redetermination call was with a parent who was receiving S.S.I. on behalf of a disabled child. “Hi, this is Steven, from Social Security Administration,” he said. “I’m just calling to see if you’re able to do the redetermination appointment.” His stomach growled. The bottom-right corner of his center screen flickered with notifications. He stayed with the caller. Date of birth? Marriages? Job placements? He clicked “yes” and “no” bubbles and typed in numbers. He had much of the script memorized. “Any items held for potential value?” he asked. “Promissory notes, real property or business property, or ABLE accounts?” S.S.I. is allocated based on an applicant’s income, assets, family size, and other factors. It often takes a year, and the help of a lawyer, to get a decision. (Earlier in Steven’s career, the time frame had been three to six months.) If an application is rejected, the case can be appealed to an administrative-law judge, and the wait for those hearings is around two years.
“That was the last amount verified,” Steven continued. “Has that changed?” While waiting for the program to advance to the next screen, he glanced at e-mails on his rightmost monitor. There were more from headquarters and human resources and the employees’ union than usual. Since November, three S.S.A. commissioners or acting commissioners had come and gone: Martin O’Malley, Carolyn W. Colvin, and Michelle King. The guy in charge now was Leland Dudek, whom Trump had elevated from a middle-management role for his eagerness to help DOGE access S.S.A. files, a vast library of individual medical, housing, family, and financial records. Dudek announced plans to eliminate six out of ten regional headquarters; several directors left the agency. In an all-staff e-mail, Dudek wrote:
Criticism, contempt, stonewalling, and defensiveness are the four forces that can end any relationship and weaken any institution. . . .
Elections have consequences. . . .
Now, under President Trump, we follow established precedent: we serve at the pleasure and direction of the President. Only the Courts or Congress can intervene.
The latest e-mail from headquarters stated that, “effective today,” employees were prohibited from engaging in “Internet browsing” of “general news” or “sports” on “government-furnished equipment.”
Steven was almost done with the redetermination. Hard cases, like an overpayment that needed to be clawed back, could “make the conversation longer, vulgar.” This one was easy; the payments, of around a thousand dollars per month, would continue. “You will receive a summary statement regarding the information that we discussed,” he said. He moved on to a second call. This one, too, involved a young adult whose caretaker—in this case, a nonprofit organization—was the payee. “Hello. This is Steven from Social Security. How are you?” His cellphone buzzed. Since Trump’s reëlection, he had been in a prolific, darkly humorous group chat with fellow S.S.A. workers in the Midwest. He referred to them as his sisters and brothers. The incoming message was a link to a news story about the imminent closure of S.S.A. field offices in the area. One man in the chat, who voted Republican but had grown skeptical of Trump, wrote, “Fucking unbelievable. . . . This would devastate our agency’s ability to serve the public.”
Meanwhile, the redetermination call was getting tricky. A new source of income seemed to be complicating the calculation of resources. Steven put the nonprofit on hold and logged into Equifax. He walked across the room to grab a plastic bottle of water and took a swig. “I’m trying really not to go off the deep end,” he said. If his office closed, and the neighboring offices closed, many people would have no way of getting benefits. For one thing, applications for Social Security cards and certain forms of S.S.I. had to be submitted in person.
Steven worried about his own well-being, too. His kids were on his health insurance. He and his wife had to take care of his father. S.S.A.’s human-resources division had sent an e-mail titled “Organizational Restructuring—Availability of Voluntary Reassignment, Early Out Retirement, and Separation Incentive Payments to ALL ELIGIBLE EMPLOYEES—No Component or Position Exceptions,” which seemed to pressure workers to leave. “A lot of this stuff is intentionally degrading,” Steven said. “They’re trying to do whatever they can to get people to resign.” Recently, he and other field-office staff were told that their jobs were safe because they were “mission critical.” That was reassuring, but only “a little bit.”
When the Equifax search proved inconclusive, Steven told the nonprofit, “I’ll have to put this on the back burner for a bit until I can get some info.” All three of his screens were noisy. In Microsoft Teams, a supervisor was asking for updates on specific cases. Another window showed the names of people waiting in the lobby of the field office, in real time. He stared at a name in the queue. “This one, I’ve been playing phone tag with her,” Steven said. He opened a chat to alert a colleague at the office.
The work is surprisingly personal. A Social Security file contains a lot of intimate information. From a quick glance, Steven can tell where a recipient was born, what language they speak, whether they’d been involved in the child-welfare system, if they are married, whether that marriage had ended as a result of divorce or death. He has some colleagues whose “attitudes suck to high heaven,” caused by a mix of stress and a suspicion of the poor. “I love helping people,” he said. “You’re the first contact for them.”
Next, Steven had to get “on the phones.” Fielding random calls on the S.S.A. hotline isn’t technically part of his job, but he didn’t question the assignment. For several weeks, everyone had been required to help out. “Good morning. Social Security. This is Steven,” he said. “What is your Social Security number, please? All right, starting with your name and date of birth . . .” He wrapped up his first few calls rather quickly. He sent out a missing tax document, scheduled a father for an in-person appointment to get a Social Security card for his baby, and confirmed bank information for a recipient’s direct deposit. A fourth call, involving a lost check, was more complicated. He rubbed his forehead with his thumbs and forefingers.
Steven later received two mass e-mails. The first reminded all S.S.A. employees to send their “mandatory weekly assignment”—the “What Did You Do Last Week” e-mail, with five bullet points summarizing what they had worked on—directly to the government’s Office of Personnel Management, not to anyone in their actual agency. The second one was yet another plea for workers to quit or take early retirement. It warned that some who opted to remain in “non-mission critical positions” might be reassigned to S.S.A. call centers. No definition of “non-mission critical” was offered.
“I just keep wondering, How long can I be doing this?” Steven said. Many years before Trump and DOGE, there was a period when he could not sleep. “The job would cause me to wake up in the middle of the night,” he said. “You know how your brain can’t shut stuff off, or you’re just dreading going in the next day?” He was troubled by certain cases—a girl who had been abused in foster care, only to end up with a grandmother who stole her S.S.I. checks. He was also haunted by the need to reach case quotas, never explicitly stated but often implied. “Cutting corners happens in this industry, when representatives are trying to just get something off their list,” he said. “So then it’s like, ‘I got that done.’ But did you really help the person?” His latest sources of worry were a news article in which O’Malley, the former S.S.A. commissioner, predicted “system collapse and an interruption of benefits” within “thirty to ninety days” and an affidavit by a former agency official that described DOGE’s violation of privacy protocols and the likelihood of “critical errors that could upend SSA systems.”
Steven has never been a zealot for anything except his favorite football team, but now he believes that he and his co-workers are part of an “underground movement” to prevent the destruction of Social Security. Trump and Musk, and more conventional Republicans, talk obsessively about rooting out fraud at the S.S.A. Mistakes and overpayments do occur, but the agency’s inspector general recently found that less than one per cent of benefits distributed between 2015 and 2022 were improper. Steven believes that mass layoffs will result in vulnerable Americans not getting the money they’re entitled to. “We service people at their best and worst times,” he said. “People heading into retirement, surviving spouses, widows, widowers. It used to be we’d get complaints from the public. We’d start off a call by apologizing. ‘We’re understaffed!’ ” Now, he went on, “people are apologizing to us.” ♦

Hey! It's A Great Time To Review Your W4! and other fun tax things they don't seem to be teaching in school. (detailed explanations in the read more)
Disclaimer: These are super basic basics. I'm not an expert. I've just seen a lot of people get hit hard and it really sucks.
Don't throw away your income documents.
Keep copies of your returns.
File every year you have an income.
File even if you're going to owe.
Amend your return if you realize there's something wrong on the original.
There's a statute of limitations on refunds.
They can use your refund for certain debt.
There are programs so you don't get dinged for your joint filer's debt.
You can request a rush on the basis of extreme hardship.
You can request a waiver for penalties/interest on late payments.
Know the basics for your area. Due diligence, right?
If you have a business, please be careful.
Review your W4.
Keep your contact info up to date.
If they send a letter, response immediately.
If you don't hear anything in 4 weeks, call/message/visit a local office.
You can file directly with the IRS now, and some states.
If you use tax preparation software/service, double check everything.
If you're expecting a refund triple-check your bank info.
If you're making a payment, triple-check it goes through.
Don't wait til the last day to make a payment.
Consider getting a registered online account with the IRS and/or your state.
Take several deep breaths.
(↓ more details ↓)
Don't throw away your income documents. W2s, 1099s, anything that shows income and/or withholding. How long? Forever.
Keep copies of your returns, in formats you can easily access. Highly recommend a hard copy as well as digital, or at least available offline. How long? Forever. (I know there are statutes of limitations, but I don't trust that)
File every year you have an income. Honestly might want to file even if you don't - you can put all zeroes. If you should have filed and didn't, they can make an educated guess, and you might not like it. If you owe, they can add failure to file/failure to pay penalties that can really add up.
File even if you're going to owe. You can set up payment plans, if needed. If you don't file, the penalties and interest are insane.
Amend your return if you realize there's something wrong on the original. Audits aren't just for comedic effect on sitcoms, and as above, the penalties and interest are insane.
There's a statute of limitations on refunds. For the IRS, it's "3 years from the date you filed your federal income tax return, or 2 years from the date you paid the tax". States vary.
They can use your refund for certain debt. Child support, student loans that aren't on a plan, overpayment of benefits, traffic tickets…
There are programs so you don't get dinged for your joint filer's debt. They take longer to process, but you will be able to keep your refund even if your joint filer's refund is used to pay a debt.
You can request a rush in cases of extreme hardship. Eviction, medication, feeding children. It's not a guarantee, but you can ask.
You can request a waiver for penalties and interest on late payments. Again, not a guarantee, but you can ask.
Know the basics for your area. You don't have to be an expert, but the basics: Which forms to file, filing dates, how extensions work, if there are city/county taxes that need to be filed separately, if you need to make estimated payments…
If you have a business, please be careful. all of the above plus more. It can get so messy, and so hard to clean up.
Review your W4. Make sure you have the right amount coming out. Do you want to owe, get a refund, get close to zero? Make an informed decision and make sure your W4 reflects that. Highly recommend checking again in a few months, sometimes HR can be shifty bastards.
Keep your contact info up to date. If they need more info, they won't hunt you down. This includes if you move after you file. Phone number isn't as important, but address is.
If they send a letter asking for information, respond immediately. They will either not process the return, or make an educated guess based on what they have. Even if it's just to say "Hey, I can't get this document because _", they need something. Also - getting a letter doesn't necessarily mean there's something wrong. With electronic filing, they don't get images of your W2/1099, and they want to double check. Or there's an address/filing status change they want to be sure of. Or maybe you had an identity theft situation in the past. Or or or. Or maybe you are a "fraudster"!
If you don't hear anything in maybe 4 weeks, call/message/visit a local office. Sometimes things happen. A letter was sent but was returned. A manual review was stalled and just needed a nudge. Sometimes the return didn't show up at all. Also - when/if you contact them, please be civil. The person who answers the phone has so little control over any of this. A polite, "Hey, just wanted to make sure everything's good" will go a long way.
You can file directly with the IRS now, and some states. In some cases, you can even port your info from IRS to state, saving you the trouble of re-entering a bunch of stuff. Best, you can be sure it actually was received.
If you use tax preparation software/service, double check everything. Make sure the numbers look reasonable, make sure you know where their fee is coming from, make sure you know where your refund is going (like to a pre-paid card or your own bank), make sure you know FOR SURE if they are scheduling a payment on your behalf. Sometimes it's not obvious, and this can result in double-payments or worse. Mostly, make sure the return is accepted. Get it in writing. Don't wait two months to ask, when they are closed for the season.
If you're expecting a refund triple-check your bank info. If something changes with your bank info after you file, call.
If you're making a payment, triple-check it goes through. I mean so you don't double-pay. If you paid online, make sure you got a confirmation number. If you don't, call. Don't assume it didn't work and pay again. Even if you figure it out before it hits your bank, there's nothing the revenuers can do to stop it.
Don't wait til the last day to make a payment. If something goes wrong, if the check is lost in the mail or the bank is acting fucky, it will go badly. Preparation software is evil about scheduling the payments for the last minute.
Consider getting a registered online account with the IRS and/or your state. You can track your return, and also see letters before they're mailed, see past info, send messages, make payments, check on payment status, update info. Yes, the websites aren't great, but it gives you a little more control.
Again, not a Tax Professional in any way. Just don't want anyone to get fucked by Surprise! Tax Shit!

Selecting the best restaurant management software: features to look for
Tumblr media
Best restaurant management software features
When you search for the best restaurant management software for your restaurant, you will find an overwhelming number of options that are sure to confuse you. So, how to pick the best one? The answer lies in the features of a restaurant POS system.
Find out the must-have features for a restaurant management system:
Security
Your restaurant POS system regularly deals with confidential customer information like their payment details, contact information, etc, and ensuring their security should be a priority to build trust and credibility. Ensure that the restaurant software you choose has end-to-end encryption and a secure payment system.
Speed
One of the most important factors of the best restaurant management software is its speed. It must be able to work efficiently during rush hours when the order flow usually doubles. If the system slows down or crashes, then it could pose a serious challenge to your operational efficiency and business reputation. While scrutinizing event management software, do not forget to check its speed and its ability to handle pressure.
Scalability
Scalability is extremely important for a restaurant management solution to stay aligned with the changes that take place. Whether it is about managing restaurants from different locations or adding new features, your software must be able to deliver that without affecting the performance.
Mobile Accessibility
Make sure that the restaurant POS system you choose offers you the flexibility to manage your restaurant operation through your mobile phone. Opening a desktop for minor works can be a hassle. Tracking orders, deliveries, customer data, table registration, and more through phones is extremely beneficial and convenient.
Table booking management
Table reservation is a crucial part of a restaurant, and that is why, while filtering restaurant management software, look for a restaurant management system that offers a table booking system.
Order and delivery management
A restaurant POS system is incomplete without an online ordering and delivery management system. Search for a restaurant menu software that provides you with 100% admin control over the orders and delivery management.
Technical support
Technical support ensures that everything runs smoothly. Opt for a restaurant management system that offers technical support when required. This is important because if you face any technical issues, they can solve them promptly.
Reporting and analytics
Reports and analytics help you measure the performance of your restaurant. It throws light on sales, employee performance, and customer preferences to help you make major decisions for growth.
