Keith & Chantal Tkachuk on how Matthew & Brady's vibrant personalities stem from colourful St. Louis roots
It is an attitude and household like theirs in suburban St. Louis that has produced one of the league’s most colourful players off the ice, and one of the most entertaining players on it.
“I assume Brady is the off-ice one and Matthew is the on-ice one?” said Keith, laughing.
Brady’s infectious personality has been on display via several renditions of "Mr. Brightside" posted online by fans thrilled to see him letting loose in local establishments.
The toolkit Matthew has used to become one of the more polarizing and prolific 100-point scorers includes an innate ability to agitate while dazzling with memorable, between-the-leg finishes.
In a league full of beige, both engaging, natural leaders stand out.
Brady, captain of the Ottawa Senators, became a folk hero in Calgary last spring with his double-fisted celebrations in support of his brother’s playoff run.
Matthew, an alternate captain for the Florida Panthers, single-handedly resurrected the Battle of Alberta with a series of hits on Zack Kassian he punctuated with, “If he doesn’t want to get hit, then stay off the tracks.”
And the hits just keep on coming, from both.
“They’re not boring like a lot of guys in the NHL, tell ya that much,” said Keith, who was one of the more personable players of his era.
“I think it’s good they have a personality. It’s good for them, it’s good for the league, good for the team and it’s good for you guys.
“You don’t want to talk to boring guys with programmed answers.”
Keith said he remembered watching Matthew on the After Hours segment on Hockey Night in Canada as a rookie, conducting the whole interview with his head down.
“I said, ‘What are you doing? Get your head up and talk,’” said Keith.
“But now it’s like this (as he snaps his fingers).
“I watched Matthew interviewed last night and he was pretty good. He adds some normal stuff to it that people like. It’s not about the same answers. He does a good job.
“I think it’s being around the locker room for a long time, being comfortable.”
Both Tkachuks are armed with tremendous confidence, no doubt cultivated while growing up at their father’s knee in NHL dressing rooms.
They’ve honed their interview skills under the glare of demanding Canadian hockey markets where all eyes are on their every move, and they know it.
Yet, they continue letting their personalities shine though.
Brady certainly does that well with a microphone in his hand, belting out The Killers’ anthem like he did just a few weeks ago when a fan posted him performing with teammates.
“The good news is every time he does it, he’s with his fiancée, so it’s not like he’s out by himself,” said Keith.
“If you were in Phoenix or New York no one would care, or know you. But you’re in Canada, so I just told him, you’ve got to be careful.
“It’s not like he’s being a goofball, idiot, drunk. He’s not like that. He just turned 23 years old, but he thinks like a 16-year-old.
“He just likes to have fun.”
Sure, it’s all good fun like he’s had for years in his parents' basement with friends and family.
“He has a contagious personality – he always has a smile on his face, seems to be in a good mood and is fun to be around,” said Mom, sharing her theory on why his song is the Killers’ classic.
“I think that’s just a popular college song – a fun song that the kids go crazy over.
Draft parties, grad parties, Christmas parties, you name it, the Tkachuks want to ensure everyone is included, as they value the importance not only of teammates bonding, but the spouses as well.
“One of the best parties was an Easter party we had one of the last years Keith played – we had the whole team over and we got this huge Easter bunny costume and Matthew got into it,” said Chantal, who Keith calls Julie McCoy, the cruise director from Love Boat.
“Matthew was about 12 and he just nailed it, holding the kids’ hands.
“All the moms were oohing and ahhing over how great an Easter bunny he was.
“Honest to god, I still get random texts from moms who said, 'That was just the best.'”
“They like the wine cellar and the scotch,” said a smiling Keith, who taught both his sons to revere their team’s support staff.
“I know what it felt like to be a young guy and not having anywhere to go, so I think it’s important to have that open-door policy.”

That policy extended to the family basement, where current Blues star Robert Thomas lived his first two years in the league before renting Matthew’s St. Louis home this fall.
Keith has three TVs mounted in the basement so he can watch Thomas and both of his sons at the same time. After games, Keith would take on a fatherly role with Thomas and wait up for him to get home to share thoughts on his performance.

THERAPEUTIC KNITTING - STRESSED NO MORE
It really is a thing...
Being a single mom can be hard at the best of times, let alone in the middle of the Covid-19 pandemic. Moving back to my hometown (city actually), finding a full-time job after being a stay at home mom for two years, trying to start my own business and dealing with the daily trials and tribulations of having a now four year old little boy is not easy. (Read my Halloween post :P)
The one thing that has been helping me get through this very trying time is that I have wonderfully creative and supportive people in my life that constantly push me to continue to be creative myself. I draw a lot of inspiration for my designs from the people I know and the situations that arise in my life. No situation or experience is too tough to get through.
I always try to see the glass half full even though lately it's been getting harder and harder to do so in my personal life and my professional life.
I have been working on this mountain blanket design since last July for a Christmas present (that was the goal anyway as it is March 2021 now) and I've had to start over six times already. I try not to look at this as a failure as I've learned so much trying to attempt this pattern that I created; new stitches and new techniques in order to get the result I desire but it still has been a very long, difficult process. Because of this I thought it might be interesting in this post to talk about how I create my patterns and how many times I do start over in order to get it just right. This is my personal version of knit therapy. Sometimes in order to create you must first destroy! Ripping out my knitting after getting frustrated with it can be truly satisfying at times.
STEP 1 Idea
Now an idea for a new design can literally come from anything or anywhere for that matter. My friend's favourtite colour or a conversation I have with my child; even a picture or image I see online or in my travels. For my mountain blanket it all started with a conversation that I had with my coworker. He talked about growing up in Banff, Alberta and how he would go snowboarding in the mountains and bam it hit me, I'd design a pop art inspired piece. That's all it was in the beginning, just two words... mountains and pop art. (well I guess three words but you get the idea)
STEP 2 Design
Designing is always fun for me. I get to let my imagination run wild. For patterns that involve any kind of pictures as part of the design element, like my mountain blanket, I use my Microsoft Excel program and create a chart.
Once that is underway I decide on a size for my pattern and adjust my chart accordingly. This can take a few hours or even a few days to get just right. My blanket was designed specifically to fit a twin bed so it was quite a big undertaking to begin with and having to start over six times... I'm surprised I haven't ripped all my hair out yet.
STEP 3 Making
Now it's one thing to have an idea and another to have a design but if you can't take your vision and turn it into reality it's back to square one. I have spent the past 8 months trying to make this blanket work. It has a beautiful seed stitch pattern followed by the mountain design and I just can't get my tension on the mountains right. My stitches are either too tight or too loose or my yarn drags too much on the underside of the blanket. It's been such a frustrating project, I've actually shed a few tears over it. That's where Step 4 comes in.
STEP 4 Adapting
Like I said earlier this blanket was meant to be a Christmas present. I should clarify, it was Christmas 2020. So three weeks before Christmas I had finally had it with my blanket. Enough was enough. I was still only half done and had to rip out the mountain section yet again. Nothing seemed to be going right and it looked like I wasn't going to have a gift to give at our Christmas gathering when I decided that my best course of action was to get back to basics and go back to my roots.
In one of my earlier posts I mentioned that I was a cross-stitcher before I was a knitter. That skill certainly came in handy here. A knitting chart and a cross-stitching chart are very similar so it was quite easy to convert my mountain pattern over to a smaller needle and thread.
Four weeks later I had my design completed as a cross-stitch just in time for our Christmas gathering. (sometimes a Covid-19 quarantine around the holidays resulting in festivity postponement works in your favour) A good lesson here was not only do you need to know how to adapt but you need to know when to adapt. As an artist and as a person I need to know my limits and when certain skills or certain things are just out of my reach. It doesn't mean that I'm going to give up, it just means that I need more time to acquire what I need in order to succeed. At the end of the day I'm still new to knitting, I've been doing it for less than a decade and I still have so much left to learn. I just need a little bit more time before I can attempt the kind of intricate patterns that I would like to do. Until then it's good to take a break from knitting every once and a while and make sure my embroidery skills stay sharp.
Pop Art Mountain Mash-Up 2.0
Not too shabby!
If you would like to purchase any wooden embroidery hoops or embroidery thread please check out our website: https://www.timeslostart.com for more details.
A smaller cross-stitched version of this mountain pattern will be available for purchase in the summer months.

The Alberta government is looking to parents to help shape the future of child care in the province by sharing their thoughts in a online survey. Meanwhile critics say the program needs to change. The Early Learning and Child Care Parent Engagement Survey invites parents to share their ideas about what defines high-quality child care and the services they expect from operators. The province said feedback gathered from the survey will help shape the future of child care in Alberta. But critics say changes need to be made to the program before moving it forward.

The Growing Role of Driver’s Licenses in Canada’s Digital Identity Ecosystem
As Canada accelerates its journey into the digital era, driver’s licenses are evolving beyond their traditional role. Once simply a permit to operate a vehicle, they are now becoming a central component of the country’s digital identity ecosystem. With provinces exploring and piloting digital ID programs, driver’s licenses are at the forefront of this transformation.

1. From Physical to Digital
Several Canadian provinces, including Ontario and Alberta, are developing digital driver’s licenses (DDL) that can be stored on smartphones. These digital IDs aim to provide a secure and convenient alternative to carrying a physical card. When integrated with a broader digital identity system, they can be used to access services, verify age, or even streamline online transactions.
By using technologies like biometric authentication and blockchain, digital licenses ensure that only the rightful owner can access and share their data. This is not only more secure than traditional ID methods, but it also gives individuals greater control over what information they disclose in any given situation.
2. Building Trust in Digital Identity
Driver’s licenses are among the most trusted forms of identification in Canada. Their integration into digital ID platforms helps create a trusted bridge between citizens and online government or private services. Whether accessing health care, financial services, or employment platforms, a secure digital license could be the key to a smoother, faster user experience.
The transition also supports Canada’s broader push toward secure digital transformation. By using driver’s licenses as verified identity credentials, the government can improve security, convenience, and user autonomy in digital interactions.
3. Supporting a Safer Digital Future
Canada is carefully shaping this digital ecosystem with privacy and data protection at its core. Initiatives are being built with transparency, consent-based sharing, and strong encryption to ensure citizen trust. Canadians interested in learning more about how to stay compliant with driver’s license changes or to prepare for testing can visit licenseprep.ca, a reliable resource for updated information.
As digital identity becomes increasingly essential, the role of the driver’s license will only grow. Staying informed through tools like licenseprep.ca ensures Canadians are ready to adapt to the future of identification.

Idea for a Ghosts plot where Sam gets fed up with the ghosts and instead of just taking away their tv time as a punishment, she decides to take away their choice in what they can watch with their tv time. Oh you wanna watch tv after trying to wire $1000 to an imprisoned prince? Sure. But the only thing you get to watch is PSA videos about internet scams and online safety intended for the elderly. The ghosts all protest, of course, but because they’re essentially spoiled ipad kids at heart they can’t imagine not watching tv for *gasp* a whole week, so they still choose the terrible tv option.
It works so well that it becomes the go-to method of punishing the ghosts. When Hetty makes one too many comments about the good-for-nothing Irish, she’s stuck watching nothing but Ken Burns-type documentaries of the Great Famine and its aftermath. After Thor goes too far with his catty remarks about Alberta’s hat, and Sass keeps trying to egg him on just to cause drama, they both spend the week absolutely fuming as they watch nothing but documentaries about the behind-the-scenes scripting and manipulation of reality tv shows. And when Pete jealously tries (and fails) to possess Mark in order to get Jay to spend less time with him, he’s only allowed to watch tv episodes about the importance of sharing, all of them aimed at preschoolers. (Sam’s first thought is to make him watch home improvement shows about electrical hazards and proper wiring but Jay quickly points out that Pete seems like the type who would actually enjoy watching that stuff, and Pete is so touched at how well Jay knows him that he doesn’t even try to pretend otherwise.)
Sam and Jay very quickly start to have fun with the new punishment system, and it becomes a lot less about actually teaching the ghosts anything than it is about what programming will just be the most ironic and painful to watch. When there’s a big corporate retreat happening at the B&B and Flower keeps walking through guests as a way to protest their company? Well now she’s watching nothing but ‘this is your brain on drugs’ era anti drug specials for a week. Trevor gets into an all-out Reddit war with someone over whether or not the cutting edge is a good movie (all while he’s still banned from the laptop of course) and so he isn’t allowed to watch anything but melodramatic early-2010s Lifetime channel movies about cyberbullying. After Alberta wakes up the livings and several guests playing her music too loud on the Alexa one night, she’s stuck watching YouTube compilations of the worst renditions of old jazz classics for several days. As for Isaac? One word. Hamilton.
The ghosts eventually get their revenge by catching both of the livings lying to each other about big, impractical purchases they made, and demand that, fair is fair, they now get to pick the punishment for Sam and Jay. The livings spend the next week glumly watching nothing but financial planning advice shows, because as it turns out, they too are spoiled ipad kids at heart and can’t make it more than a day or two without tv.
#cbs ghosts#it seems I’m back to my constant ghosts-posting#anyway the thought occurred and it seemed like exactly the kind of childish antics every one of these characters would get up to so#it speaks

Heartland: Season 17 of Hit Canadian Drama Sets U.S. Premiere (Exclusive)
Heartland, the longest-running Canadian drama, has set a time and (slightly new) place for the U.S. release of its 17th season.
TVLine has learned exclusively that Heartland Season 17 will premiere Stateside on Thursday, April 25, on the commercial-free subscription streaming service UP Faith & Family, which already hosts the first 16 seasons. New episodes will release weekly, with a three-week break after Episode 5 — though during that brief hiatus, UP Faith & Family will roll out all-new exclusive content for fans (detailed below).
UP Faith & Family will be the exclusive U.S. streaming home for Heartland until early 2025; a linear premiere date on UPtv, where Heartland episodes previously made their U.S. debut, has not yet been set.
A virtual event, Heartland FanFest, will be held on April 15 from 2-3 pm ET and invite Heartland fans to submit questions via social media for cast members to answer live. (Amber Marshall, Michelle Morgan and Chris Potter are among the cast expected to appear.) Participants will also get a sneak peek at an upcoming episode. FanFest will be recorded and available exclusively to UP Faith & Family subscribers during the aforementioned three-week hiatus; those wishing to attend live can register online at HeartlandFanFest.com.
“Fans of Heartland know that UP Faith & Family continues to be the exclusive home of the newest season and the first place to see all episodes of their favorite series here in the U.S.,” says Hector Campos, SVP content strategy and programming at UP Entertainment. “We are also big fans of the series ourselves, and this season we are thrilled to celebrate Heartland with the first ever FanFest allowing exclusive access to talent.”
Based on the bestselling series of books by Lauren Brooke, Heartland is set in the rolling foothills of the Rockies in the fictional town of Hudson, Alberta. “Amy (played by Marshall) and the rest of the family know better than most that while dreams can sometimes come true, life also often takes us in unexpected directions,” reads the official synopsis. “In the new season, the Bartlett-Fleming family will find themselves excited for the future and ready to embrace new adventures, challenges and relationships. But no matter how much things may change, Amy, Lou (Michelle Morgan), Jack (Shaun Johnston) and Tim (Chris Potter) will continue to fight for what they believe in while staying rooted in the land that has been in the Bartlett-Fleming family for generations.”
Michael Weinberg, Tom Cox, Jordy Randall and Mark Haroun serve as executive producers on Heartland, the writers are Haroun, Ken Craw, Caitlin Fryers, Heather Conkie, Alexandra Clarke and Adam Hussein, and Season 17’s directors include Dean Bennett, Ken Filewych, Kristin Lehman, Madison Thomas, and cast members Potter and Morgan.

California DMV Permit Test
The California DMV Permit Test is a multiple-choice test that covers the knowledge required to pass the basic skills portion of the written test. It can be taken online, but there are still benefits to taking it at a testing centre.
Taking this exam in person gives you more time for practice and ensures you understand what's being asked before you take your test.
Taking this exam online will allow you to study on your schedule without distractions or interruptions while learning – which could help improve your score (more on this below).
What the California DMV Permit Test Online Covers
The California DMV Permit Test is a written test you can take online. It covers the following topics:
Traffic laws and regulations
Road signs and markings (including lane usage, stop signs, yield signs)
Vehicles (cars & motorcycles)
The questions are typically multiple-choice with a few fill-in-the-blank or drag-and-drop options. You must pass all four sections for your permit to be valid in California! You'll also need to pass an eye exam before applying for your driver's license to get one from the DMV or another state's Department of Motor Vehicles office.
For more information: https://dmv-permit-test.online/california/
Advantages of Using Our California DMV Practice Test
Our practice test is the best way to prepare for the DMV permit test. You can better understand what you need to know and how it applies to this topic. The questions are carefully crafted to be easy enough for anyone to answer correctly but not so easy that they're impossible! You will also see an example of each question type and where they appear on the test.
Eligibility of California DMV Permit Test

ALGOMA University: Scam or Smart Choice? Here’s the Real Story by Globexa Immigration
Algoma University: Scam or Smart Choice?
One of my recent videos with Vishal about Algoma University sparked a heated comment:
“Algoma is a big scam, third-class university with no facilities and no support.”
This post, from Globexa Immigration, is my detailed answer to anyone who shares these doubts about Algoma (often misspelled as “Alma”) University. I want to clear the air, based on years of experience sending hundreds of students to study there—and helping them successfully get their visas, work permits, and PR.
1. Why Does Globexa Immigration Recommend Algoma University?
First things first: Algoma is a public university in Canada. Unlike many private colleges where students often don’t get a Post-Graduation Work Permit (PGWP), Algoma provides a clear, reliable path to:
✅ Study Visa Approval ✅ Spouse Open Work Permit ✅ Three-Year PGWP ✅ Multiple PR Pathways
At Globexa Immigration, we recommend Algoma especially for students with a three-year bachelor’s degree, because Algoma is one of only a handful of public universities in Canada accepting such qualifications. Others include:
Vancouver Island University
Royal Roads University
Thompson Rivers University
Most other public universities require a four-year bachelor’s degree, leaving many students with limited options.
2. Facilities & Support: The Reality
I acknowledge there are legitimate frustrations about communication delays. Canadian universities—and Canadians in general—can be slow in replying to emails or processing documents. This isn’t unique to Algoma; it’s a cultural reality.
But beyond administrative delays, what “facilities” do you really need? Classes at Algoma often happen two days per week, freeing your time for essential tasks like working part-time or taking care of your family—crucial if you’re new to Canada and facing daily challenges like long commutes, settling your family, or earning to cover expenses. This is something Globexa Immigration always emphasizes when advising clients: practical, flexible study schedules are often more valuable than fancy campus facilities.
3. Studying at a “Top” University: What You Should Know
If your priority is academic excellence, there’s nothing stopping you from applying directly to top-tier universities like:
University of Toronto
McGill University
University of British Columbia
University of Alberta
York University
…but remember:
These elite universities rarely work with education consultants like Globexa Immigration.
They demand very high academic scores and English proficiency.
Their demanding programs and schedules leave little time for part-time work—something many mature students or those supporting families cannot afford.
4. Why Globexa Immigration Believes Algoma Is Designed for Real-World Needs
Most of our clients at Globexa Immigration are 30+ years old, often with children and years of work experience. They don’t come to Canada to study for the sake of studying. They need a straightforward pathway to PR, the ability to support themselves, and flexible study schedules.
Algoma offers exactly that:
Two days of classes per week
Online course components
Affordable tuition (around CAD 17,000–20,000 per year)
No application fee
Acceptance with three-year bachelor’s degrees
Reliable issuance of PALs (Provincial Attestation Letters), even after visa refusals—a critical advantage over many private institutions
5. Proof of Success: 500+ Students & Counting with Globexa Immigration
At Globexa Immigration, we’ve helped over 500 students enroll in Algoma’s PG Diploma in Project Management. Many from the first batches have already received their PR. Our experience shows:
✔️ Algoma has one of the highest visa acceptance rates ✔️ Students regularly get PGWP ✔️ Most complete their programs without issues ✔️ Many transition smoothly to PR through Ontario’s Master Graduate Stream or International Student Stream
6. Is Algoma Really a “Third-Class” University?
Let’s clarify:
First-class universities are Canada’s top-ranked, world-renowned schools—usually not available via consultants.
Second-class universities, like Algoma, are reputable public institutions that offer excellent value, straightforward admission processes, and practical programs designed for international students.
Third-class institutions are often questionable private colleges with poor outcomes—places we at Globexa Immigration avoid entirely.
So, calling Algoma “third class” is simply incorrect. It is a solid second-class, public Canadian university that reliably delivers what most international students need: a visa, an education, and a pathway to permanent residency.
7. Final Thoughts from Globexa Immigration: Why Algoma May Be the Best Choice for You
If your goal is to: ✅ Get a study visa ✅ Obtain a PGWP and spouse visa ✅ Study affordably and flexibly ✅ Access multiple PR pathways ✅ Balance study with work and family life
…then Algoma University is an excellent option, not a scam.
If you want a purely academic, world-class experience with no need for part-time work, by all means apply directly to Canada’s top universities.
But for the vast majority of practical, mature, and career-focused students looking for an effective way to build their future in Canada, Globexa Immigration recommends Algoma University as a proven, reliable choice.

How Canadian Driver's Licenses Are Becoming More Digital
As technology continues to reshape how governments interact with citizens, Canadian driver’s licenses are undergoing a major transformation. The traditional plastic card is now evolving into a digital credential that can be stored and accessed from smartphones. Several provinces across Canada have begun testing or launching digital driver’s licenses (DDL) as part of broader initiatives to modernize identity verification, improve convenience, and enhance security for Canadians.

Digital driver’s licenses work through a secure app or digital wallet, allowing individuals to present their credentials using a smartphone. These licenses carry the same legal status as physical ones and contain identical information, such as name, address, date of birth, photo, and license class. The main difference lies in their digital format, which allows for real-time updates and the ability to control which information is shared—useful for age verification or proof of identity where full license details aren’t needed. Provinces like Quebec, Ontario, and Alberta have been actively exploring digital license rollouts, with pilot programs already underway.
One of the biggest advantages of digital licenses is the added layer of security. Unlike physical cards that can be lost or stolen, digital licenses offer features such as biometric authentication, encryption, and remote disabling if your phone is lost. This protects users against identity theft and unauthorized access. They also make it easier to update personal information without needing to visit a service center. For example, changing your address could be done instantly through an app rather than waiting for a new card in the mail.
The move toward digital licenses also reflects a broader trend in digital governance. As more services become mobile-friendly and remote, having a secure, digital form of ID is increasingly important. Whether for renewing a license online, booking driving tests, or interacting with other digital government services, a digital license streamlines the process and improves user experience.
For Canadians preparing to get their license, staying informed about these digital changes is important. At licenseprep.ca, we offer up-to-date resources, study materials, and practice tests to help you prepare for the knowledge exams and understand the latest trends in licensing. Whether you're applying for a G1 or exchanging a foreign license, LicensePrep helps you stay one step ahead in the digital age.

Yeah, we definitely need more history of science type education.
I cannot speak for every stem degree, but I got my undergraduate degree in civil engineering. I don’t know what all the required classes would have looked like (I transferred in with an associates degree), but I did have to take a history class that everyone was required to take, an engineering ethics class that all engineers were required to take, and a science communication class that fulfilled some requirements but I know for a fact most engineering students didn’t take.
The history class was really valuable to me, even if nobody took it seriously. It had a big focus on colonialism and structural racism, and it was the first time someone explained to me how race was socially constructed in a way that finally made some complete sense (wow, professors can explain things better than people on the internet, who knew?). We also talked a lot about the legal codes that fucked people over—and we touched on eugenics. For the final project in the class, I chose eugenics in Canada, because I had already learned a lot about eugenics in the US and Germany (through previous courses or just… being an intellectually curious minority member online), but I hadn’t heard anything on Canada and I knew from a different class I took that Canada basically copied the US when it came to oppressing minorities, especially Native Americans/First Peoples.
Turns out, Canada had a fascinating and deeply horrifying eugenics program, the worst of which was in Alberta and lasted until the 1970s. This included the forced sterilization of the “feeble minded”, which was disproportionately poor, non-white, especially native, women. This movement was also partially propped up by the women’s movement, who saw themselves as the “mothers of the race”. I highly recommend the book Towards Our Own Master Race for more information.
The engineering ethics course mostly focused on bribery and corruption in civil engineering where people just, did bad work on a road or a bridge or a building to get more money, resulting in shoddy infrastructure and death. And that’s serviceable; it’s by far the biggest issue with civil engineering ethics. We discussed the ethics codes that professional organizations have as well. But we did have some meatier topics, including the final group presentation—a presentation my group gave, but due to sickness I had to present the entire 15 minute PowerPoint all on my own while I lost my voice. It was on environmental racism, a super important topic. Where is waste discarded? Where are factories built? What neighborhoods are destroyed for highways? The answer to almost all of those questions is “poor neighborhoods”, neighborhoods that due to redlining are historically black and also tend to have worse schools, urban heat island effects, and be food deserts as a result of poverty. It was a really meaningful presentation, and I wish we had covered an entire semester on those sorts of topics.
Finally, in my science communication course, we mostly talked about journalism and publishing papers but we also talked about how people lie about science at the danger of the public. Think big tobacco and climate change denialism. Those aren’t just failures of science communication, they are the result of bad actors explicitly lying to the public to cover up death and risk. That’s super important.
One last thing; as a civil engineering student with a focus on environmental engineering I did learn a lot more about risk factors and how to keep the public safe than like, a general civil or structural engineer might. And through that I learned a lot about the truly awful history of hazardous waste dumping in this country. We did learn a lot about ethics, “not killing the public” was a pretty basic thing we were taught, and eugenics doesn’t really apply much to civil engineering, but we SHOULD LEARN MORE. A history or science/engineering course wouldn’t just be interesting, it would be important. That ethics course was pretty light on the ground when it came to philosophy, and a few of my peers were legitimately interested in more. Cultivating responsible scientists and engineerings is super important, and it cannot simply be at the level of “don’t lie about research” and “don’t accept bribes”.
