my favorite thing about elves vs hobbits is their names. elves will be named things like “maiden with the moonlight woven in her hair” and then hobbits are straight up like oh yeah my names domble bingus rumbubo

Do you know where the “mithrun is the most grizzed masculine elf take” comes from. All I think about is the changeling thing but no one calls Marcille the most masculine elf for being ripped as an orc compared to Tade. Or that he trains a lot, which is also not an inherent masculine thing. To me Mithrun doesn’t really look different to any other (male) elf we see. Is it from the extra’s or something?
Yes that take comes from the changeling transformations of both Mithrun and Senshi. The joke is the Senshi is the "most femme dwarf" and Mithrun the "most masc elf" in contrast with how they look in their original forms
I do think the joke kinda got out of control in the game of telephone that fandom is, instead of a fun observation of how we might perceive Mithrun more feminine than he is and Senshi more masculine than he is due to our own biases based on their races it got taken way too seriously as "the only true and correct interpretation"
I don't think Mithrun is especially masculine or feminine when it comes to his personality, I understand some people have been peeved by others making him maybe too meek/girly compared to canon but I feel like the response of making him way more aggressive/manly than canon is just as inaccurate and it's kinda upsetting when I see "fandom vs (my interpretation of canon) canon" as if they're any more right for going to the extreme opposite
We don't really know if Mithrun is specially "masculine" for an elf either, the only elf that we know is especially "masc" is Otta, and we only know cause her bio says even elves mistake her for a man (I think for most of us she looks as androgynous as the others)
Here's a post discussing elf gender presentation more in depth if you're interested in the subject but all we know is that Mithrun works out a lot and is very muscular (which signals 'manlyness' for us but might not for elves) there isn't much that point out to him being especially manly or especially feminine compared to other male elves. He also has lost most of his desires and doesn't express his preferences much so I think it's safe to assume he doesn't really pick how he presents himself (clothing and such).
Other than that and being stoic (is that a super manly trait?) Mithrun is pretty average I think. He's also still super cute even as a tallman (as if looking manly would stop you from being cute)
But another trait of him that seem to make people read him as "super manly" it's that sometimes Mithrun is scary and aggressive, I'm not even going into why that's bad (correlating aggressiveness with manliness is uh…. not great….) not even to mention he only acts that way when he's triggered by wanting to take revenge on the demon, otherwise he seems to avoid hurting others.
Related to the "Mithrun is a super manly elf" take I've even seen people argue that drawing him looking too "cute" and small is incorrect (probably just because of his tallman self) but that's how Kui draws him herself.

I don't understand why correct others for drawing him the same way his creator does, he's designed to look this way, there's nothing to "fix" about his original design either (nothing wrong with drawing him in a way that appeals to you more tho, fanart is fanart just don't harass other people)
Anyway just to stress the point that he is very average let's compare him to Lycion and Pattadol
The average height for elves is 155 for males and 150 for females Mithrun is 155cm, Lycion is 170cm and Pattadol is 160cm, they're both taller and have a sturdier looking builds than Mithrun
Kui often draws Pattadol specially with a sturdier build than Mithrun actually
So no he's not the most buff biggest elf ever in any sense (although he IS a muscular elf), and I don't think the changeling transformations are too objective since they're magic. For example Pattadol as a human is pretty average even tho she's big compared to other elves (not to mention Senshi half-foot who has a huge beard that half-foots don't seem to be able to grow)
#Mithrun#dungeon meshi#ask#dungeon meshi races#dunmeshi complaint#long post#longpost#elves#dunmeshi thoughts#Elf gender presentation makes me confused but yes the proof that Mithrun is manly is mostly his tallman transformation as far as I know#and people's biases about that#I think the argument that senshi is more feminine than other dwarves holds more water#since we actually get to see he acts different from other dwarves in general but especially male dwarves

Honestly dragon age will be like hey I have an idea for a female elf and they literally always slap. In dao we start off strong with some female elf background characters like Shianni my beloved. But then we have; Velanna. Merrill. Talis. Briala. Sera. Like I'm sorry are those just not the five of the best characters in Bioware canon? Like. Just hit after hit after hit. Female elves; what can't they do?
#dragon age#dai#dao#da2#merrill#sera#brialla#like seriously tho#even tho i dont think the veilguard companions are as developed or good#bellara also gives us an excellent female elf and if theyd been more brave with her and the elves in general she would be on this list#just hit after hit after hit

So I'm researching house elf names and it's noted that in canon Kreacher is the only house elf without a name ending in "y" and a reason for that is possibly that he was never actually named but that the Black family just called him Creature when calling for him and I just jvnfjbngj. I made it worse for myself too cause now I'm picturing Regulus being the reason it's spelled Kreacher instead of Creature because he was the first one to write it down but he didn't know how to spell it properly

I have headcanons for Traditional Katolis and Moonshadow Weddings
Katolis
In many ways a traditional Christian marriage. White dress, Dad walking daughter down the aisle. Some exceptions:
If a man doesn't cry during his wedding it's considered very bad luck, "If a man sheds not a tear at his maiden fair, Dressed in white with flowers rare, Then cursed be the vows they weave, For love unwept is love deceived."
Women must fast for weeks if not a month leading up to the wedding day, something about commitment.
Men can't look at other women for weeks until the marriage is finished, the only exception is the mother. Amaya grants herself the exception.
The one officiating the wedding must blind themselves, Stems from an old legend that an old priest who couldn't find love himself was so angry that he has to officiate weddings that chaos itself helped him and Everytime he gazed upon a woman or man the wedding would end in tragedy.
Having any sort of aches and or pains during the wedding is a seriously bad omen, any type of pain is treated very, very seriously my apothecaries if they know you're getting married. This story is simpler, back before more modern medicines and when a simple infection could kill you.
Gifts are mostly based on profession and class, farmers will be gifted farming equipment, carpenters will be given tools, royals linens and gold. It's becoming more and more of a "Joke" in recent years. 10 people gift the same exact thing knowingly. In a similar vein some people give gifts that are mostly useless, inconvenient or cumbersome and are too noticeable to regift or throw away so someone is stuck with it. It's an act of love.
Katolians tend to invite quite everyone they know, Callum even invited Elmer from Scumport.
It's tradition to have the groom's dad put on his jacket and tie for him, Ezran takes up this task. The groom's mother helps the bride, Ethari and Amaya take up this task.
The bride has to ask for permission to marry him as much as the groom does, if both parents are dead the bride goes to where they are buried and asks for permission. It's common for both bride and groom to debase themselves asking for permission.
It's bad luck to immediately consummate the marriage, Katolians typically give it 7 days. If you can go 7 days without touching your love then it's true love it whatever.
Honeymoons are typically a pretty ridged framework, a couple- especially Royal- can pick between 5 spots. Lodge, Beach House, forest cabin, mountain Lodge, or a boat retrofitted for comfortable living.
Drinks and Food are hearty and plentiful. All types of alcohol but particularly the grooms choice of alcohol and the brides food. They have been known to get quite wild.
Dancing is quite conservative, having a select few songs and dancing is between family or those in a relationship. The groom's father dances with the bride and the bride's mother dances with the groom.
Cakes are huge and intricately decorated. Again becoming a joke in recent years.
Moonshadow
The bride and groom have to hunt each other, this is obviously harder for Callum so he just flies. Not against the rules. Rayla gets him though.
Katolians are shocked at how revealing Moonshadow wedding clothes are, Definitely less conservative than Katolis. Lots of sheer/translucent clothing and exposed skin. Callum nearly faints.
Moonshadow weddings are very small. Family are a given and only very few are invited.
Moonshadow weddings typically happen wherever is beautiful enough, The bride finds a location she likes after a week of searching and her family decorated it properly. Could be a waterfall, Could be a forest, could be a boat. Who knows.
Moonshadow weddings are at night and under a full moon, Explains why Katolis wedding was first.
Consummating the marriage is immediate.
Many couples have a temporary shelter just a little bit off the wedding spot, The couple retreat there after partying. Think of it as a honeymoon. They relax there for days to weeks doing whatever.
Gifts are given more based on need, Clothes to cooking to weapons. Ethari gave Rayla a contract for 10 cribs.
Food and drinks are limited to how many people are there, drinks are typically low in alcohol.
It's common for the bride to engrave a weapon for her husband.
There are no cakes in Moonshadow weddings, just basic food.
Dancing is very free, it's even tradition to dance as seductively as possible for your spouse.
It's common for the bride and groom to consume aphrodisiacs
Personal headcanons
Before the official wedding when Callum sees Rayla he collapsed and Soren catches him, he bursts into tears at the altar.
It got very awkward when Opeli, out of tradition, announced the Father of the groom's dance.
Soren kept giving Callum more and more drinks and he threw up at his own wedding.
Callum ordered a small basic cake but Soren intercepted it and made it supermassive and ornate. They could've had cakes for months.
Ethari liked the idea of a cake at a wedding so much he made one.
Callum absentmindedly invited Claudia and Viren.
Bait and Stella were the ring bearers
Terry helped a lot in crafting Raylas Moonshadow wedding.
Rayla picked under a waterfall for her wedding, unfortunately for her when the full moon came around the mosquitos came out.
Rayla announces she's pregnant only weeks after the marriage.

I headcanon maglor short because it's funny to make the oldest sibling short but obv the shortest brother can't be maedhros the tall. Also imagine him kinda plain looking by noldorian standards, like his mom (he later finds out that he is very pretty by sindarian standards tho)
Idk I like the idea of feanor's shrimpiest, least eye-catching son releasing a song of power that accidentally shatters all the palace windows the first time he sings in front of an audience. He almost brings the roof down right after with his crying but feanor and maedhros were luckily nearby (they expected this outcome)
#tiny shrimp maglor with his gangly limbs#and on one side he has maedhros who has never had a pimple in his life#and celegorm who is literally blessed by god#and dad who is canonically tirion's hottest elf#lifes funny like that#maglor#makalaure#feanorian#kanafinwe#silm#the silmarillion#silm fandom#maglor meta#i do imagine its daeron who first informs him that he is considered feanors hottest son in doriath#so#tho to his frustration the beleriand elves (while shorter than their valinorian counterparts) are generally still taller than him#short king#tolkien#maglor hc

Considering Celebrimbor is the ONLY one of the main elves we never saw Adar interact with, my brain is doing a really good job of locking onto the idea of a Celebrimbor x Adar Political Marriage AU.
No, I don't know exactly how that would come about - something something elves and uruks united against The Shadowy Threat of Sauron whatever. Celebrimbor looks *hard* at Gil-galad when he asks if he would agree to it and is just...."If I say yes do you promise to give me Many Forge Supplies for a wedding present?"
Adar, for his part, isn't exactly interested in having a husband so much as the PRINCIPLE of it being openly acknowledged he's good enough for an Elf-Lord. Anyway they get married, discover over the course of the wedding dinner that they actually find each other interesting company, and proceed to have a cordial acquaintence with Adar staying at Eregion far more than he anticipated, like he'll stomp up to the forge with a really big sack over his shoulder and all the elves are eyeing him warily and he just dumps it at Celebrimbor's feet like: "here's a load of old and broken armour for you to play with only some of it was stolen directly from corpses" and Celebrimbor's all "Lovely now come and look at this, I've was thinking about the whole sunshine problem your children have and what started out as a thought exercise accidently became detailed schematics for enormous mobile rooftops you can extend before making camp so that the shade covers you even in daylight. "
Anyway. It takes them far too long to realise that they're actually into each other. Adar's letting Celibrimbor braid his hair and Celibrimbor's letting Adar make him go to bed if he's been working for too many hours straight and they're still referring to eachother as "possibly something of a friend" Eregion elves and the Uruks who set up base in Eregion's vicinity whenever Adar goes to see Celebrimbor are actually starting to interact with each other by virtue of having "how are they this oblivious about it?????" as a conversation starter.
Eventually Adar has an "oh no he's hot" moment and promptly flees Eregion because he's convinced Celebrimbor would be repulsed If he actually tried anything romantic and /or sexual. Celebrimbor is puzzled and hurt, but a stranger comes to Eregion and affords a little distraction.
This Annatar fellow is so very interested in the mithrael rings Celebrimbor made to reflect the light of the Valar, though Celebrimbor's not sure he follows his reasoning for sets to be made for either dwarves or men. Still, pleasent company. Until he starts suggesting that Gil-Galad debased Celebrimbor and his authority by forcing him into marriage with an orc, at which point Celebrimbor punches him in the face without thinking...
Merdarnia and the other smiths are very exasperated that "I think I'm in love with Adar" is somehow a bigger revelation to the Lord of Eregion than "I punched Annatar in the face and he turned out to be Sauron, he has now taken over the city and is holding us hostage."
#rings of power#verging on crack? kinda?#celibrimbor x adar#i just think Celebrimbor's the only one who would take political marriage to the Uruk leader in his stride and without causing a major#rupture amongst elves in general.#anyway.....

This isn't terribly important, but just out of curiosity, does anyone happen to know when Tolkien decided to limit surviving half-elves to just Elwing and Eärendil and their descendants (Elrond, Elros, Elrond's children)?
Like, the Hobbit still speaks in general about there being people who had both elves and men among their ancestors, and mentions Elrond as their leader. At least one if not multiple early drafts of the Council of Elrond chapter of LOTR name Erestor not only as half-elven but specifically a descendant of Lúthien. I don't have the relevant volume of HoME at hand to check, but iirc that draft also kinda implies that Erestor isn't the only one of those around, just the only one besides Elrond that's relevant to name just then, but i might be off about that part.
But by the time LOTR is polished to the shape it's published, Tolkien has apparently changed his mind about that, seeing as the published LOTR and appendices only discusses Elrond and Elros as half-elves, and any mention of Erestor's being half-elf (or in any other way related to Lúthien or to Elrond) is gone so that presumably he's been changed into an elf
So my knowledge of when Tolkien decides on the number of half-elves is basically "somewhere between whenever Tolkien wrote that draft for the Rivendell part of the story, and when LOTR was finished", but I'm really curious if anyone knows anything to narrow that down further?
#i guess in the version where erestor is half-elven/it's generally implied that there's more half-elves than just elrond's immediate family#that also kinda explains why erestor was maybe going to join the fellowship in that version rather than pippin#like at that point there's maybe enough half-elves that it makes sense for them to also have a representative among the fellowship?#lotr#lord of the rings#middle-earth#j.r.r. tolkien#the lord of the rings#erestor#elrond#tolkien#lotr meta
