So random thought just hit me. Midna from Twilight Princess is an anagram of Admin. Sure it's a coincidence and her name is supposed to be a reference to midnight which is also connected to the twili, aka twilight, which also foreshadows her role as queen as midnight is like the ultimate shadow. However my mind then made the connection from Midna/Admin to the companion everyone calls a robot Fi, some even making a Wi-Fi joke with her. And that got me thinking, Midna tells you what to do, she talks down on you a lot, rides around while you do all the work like an admin. But... More than that, you have to go around upgrading her powers, she allows you to operate in places you normally couldn't, allows you to cut and paste pieces of the world and allows you to teleport. She's basically giving you admin powers with the game being the operating system!

But then I really went crazy. Now everyone has already made the connection between Fi and ai (especially since she has a literal search mode using statistics) but, as much as I loved her, people found her annoying. Now who else did I like but others found annoying? Navi. Now not only is her name a reference to navigation (like oh, I don't know, a sat nav.) but why do people dislike her? Because she pops up multiple times, doesn't shut up until you click on her, tells you things you already know and is mostly useless when you are stuck, only serving as a reminder of where you left off... Guys. Navi is Clippy the paper clip. A worse version without a search bar sure but combine that with the whole "you have to update" or "Microsoft word is blah blah blah" that used to pop up despite being able to continue without issue once you click the X.

Oh but I'm not done. Tatl from Majora's mask? Basically just Navi but updated to pop up less often like a browser assistant you need to click on to activate. King of Red lions? Is LITERALLY tech you upgrade with other parts for a "smoother" ride with Linebeck serving the same purpose in phantom hourglass. Breath of the wild? Literally gives you a tablet with programs that allow you to essential hack physics and tears of the kingdom is the same but with a literal copy, save, paste and move through ceilings hack.

Speaking of copy and paste? Literally the echoes in echoes of wisdom. And when you dive in? You're essentially going into the recycling bin and restoring old data. You can even "run" as Link.

Still not done though. Minish cap? Literally minimises you, Zelda in spirit tracks? Literally hacks enemies once you've created a vulnerability. Four swords and triforce heroes are literally made for multiplayer, the oracle games don't really have a companion but the gimmick is just setting the world to different times like you do on devices when you want to trick the game into activating certain events. Same for a link between worlds, no companion but lowrule is Hyrule in dark mode.

Well either I'm completely insane or I need to rethink my stance on the whole "magic is science we don't understand" thing... Wait... Breath of the wild used the Sheikah slate, literal technology, to give you the abilities you could STILL use in tears of the kingdom because of magic! The hell!

2022 - Enterprise giant Oracle is facing a fresh privacy class action claim in the U.S.

The suit, which was filed Friday as a 66-page complaint in the Northern District of California, alleges the tech giant’s “worldwide surveillance machine” has amassed detailed dossiers on some five billion people, accusing the company and its adtech and advertising subsidiaries of violating the privacy of the majority of the people on Earth.

The suit has three class representatives: Dr Johnny Ryan, senior fellow of the Irish Council for Civil Liberties (ICCL); Michael Katz-Lacabe, director of research at The Center for Human Rights and Privacy; and Dr Jennifer Golbeck, a professor of computer science at the University of Maryland — who say they are “acting on behalf of worldwide Internet users who have been subject to Oracle’s privacy violations”.

The litigants are represented by the San Francisco-headquartered law firm, Lieff Cabraser, which they note has run significant privacy cases against Big Tech.

The key point here is there is no comprehensive federal privacy law in the U.S. — so the litigation is certainly facing a hostile environment to make a privacy case — hence the complaint references multiple federal, constitutional, tort and state laws, alleging violations of the Federal Electronic Communications Privacy Act, the Constitution of the State of California, the California Invasion of Privacy Act, as well as competition law, and the common law.

It remains to be seen whether this “patchwork” approach to a tricky legal environment will prevail — for an expert snap analysis of the complaint and some key challenges this whole thread is highly recommended. But the substance of the complaint hinges on allegations that Oracle collects vast amounts of data from unwitting Internet users, i.e. without their consent, and uses this surveillance intelligence to profile individuals, further enriching profiles via its data marketplace and threatening people’s privacy on a vast scale — including, per the allegations, by the use of proxies for sensitive data to circumvent privacy controls.

Commenting on the suit in a statement, Ryan said: “Oracle has violated the privacy of billions of people across the globe. This is a Fortune 500 company on a dangerous mission to track where every person in the world goes, and what they do. We are taking this action to stop Oracle’s surveillance machine.”

A spokesman for Oracle declined to comment on the litigation.

A couple of years ago the firm was facing class action suits, along with Salesforce, via a legal challenge to its tracking in Europe — which intended to focus on the legality of their consent to track web users, citing the region’s (contrastingly) comprehensive data protection/privacy laws.

However the European legal challenges, which were filed in the Netherlands and the U.K., have faced tough going — with a Dutch court ruling the suit inadmissible last year, because (per reports) it judged that the not-for-profit pursing the class action had failed to demonstrate it represented the alleged injured parties and so did not have legal standing. (Although earlier this year the organization behind the suit, the Privacy Collective, said it would appeal.)

The U.K. branch of the legal action, meanwhile, was stayed pending the outcome of an earlier class-action style privacy suit against Google — but last year the U.K. Supreme Court sided with the tech giant, blocking that representative action and dealing a blow to the prospects of other similar suits.

In the Lloyd v Google case, the court found that damage/loss must be suffered in order to claim compensation — and therefore that the need to prove damage/loss on an individual basis cannot be skipped — derailing the litigation’s push for a uniform “loss of control” of personal data for each member of the claimed representative class to stand in its stead.

The ruling was considered a hammer blow to opt-out class actions for privacy claims at the time — clearly throwing another spanner in the works of the Oracle-Salesforce class action’s ability to proceed in the U.K.

Knowledge, Classification, and Ledo's Record-Informed Epiphany in "Gargantia" [Part 1]

In the first episode, Ledo, along with other recruits, is subjected to a propagandistic presentation about the Hideauze, with the Vitruvian Man front and center, symbolic of the workings of the universe.

In the past, I've briefly mentioned Gargantia on the Verdurous Planet, a mecha science fantasy anime currently available on various streaming platforms, [1] noting how Nathan's grandfather in Stretch Armstrong was like Doctor Oldham, the sage in Gargantia, or a fan fiction written by my friend which focuses on characters within Gargantia and other series, with scenes set in archives, and featuring archivists. However, I had forgotten how much records are a central part of the series! They are even more of a uniting theme in the show than any of the brief library scenes, which I've written about on my sister blog. [2] In this post, I'll examine those moments in the series, while connecting them archives and records management concepts.

The series begins with an explanation of the war between humans, fashioning themselves as Galactic Alliance of Humankind and the Hideauze, with the latter squid-like features said to be the enemies of human beings. Ledo (voiced by Kaito Ishikawa), the show's protagonist, is an ensign within a mechanized machine also known as "Chamber", believes this narrative and is a loyal footsoldier who is about to end his tour of duty. After a hasty battle with the Hideauze, which ends in defeat, a retreat, and much loss of life, he is thrown through a wormhole. He finds himself on a salvage ship in Earth, awaking six months later. The rest of the series follows his attempts to get in contact with the Galactic Alliance Fleet while learning more about Earth and why it ended up the way it did.

In this way, records are a central part of the story. Ledo relies on Chamber to translate human language into something he can understand. Colored by his own perceptions informed by Galactic Alliance propaganda, he looks critically at the society which has clustered around a floating city of sorts composed by inter-locking fleets. He even wonders why the "weak" in Gargantia are helped, when they would be culled as "unnecessary" in his society. This comes to a head in "The Flute of Recollection" when Amy (voiced by Hisako Kanemoto), the girl who Ledo temporarily kidnapped in the first episode, brings him to visit the so-called "Sage" of Gargantia: Oldham (voiced by Hideyuki Umezu). He has a library atop a tower on one of the ships, with books of different kinds. Ledo asks about supposed "inefficiencies" in Gargantian society and hopes for information about how to get into space. Oldham tells him that very little history has been kept, with only limited information remaining about space travel. This leaves Ledo dispirited, but he continues his quest.

He learns that the squid in the ocean, known as whalesquid, are just like the Hideauze, becoming a pariah for killing one. While his mindset, informed by Galactic Alliance propaganda, he remains committed to wiping out these squid. That is until the episode "Deep Sea Secret". In the episode, after going through the squid nest, decimating all in his wake, he comes across a structure with data disks. When he asks Chambers to show him the record, he is informed it is classified by the Galactic Alliance. He commands Chambers to declassify it, saying he is the ranking officer, and that classification, in this case doesn't matter.

I had even said that he had the appearance of "an elderly White man" but later realized he is a Japanese man, as is clear from his voice actor, along with inferences from the show. I also noted that he does fulfill his library duties while serving a patron, "although not in the way we usually envision" and said that his depiction goes beyond stereotypes.
