Steamy Saturday
"Star athlete with twilight urges."
"A dark secret in his youth turned Red into a 'twisted' lover."
". . . handsome Lennie . . . teaches him forbidden techniques. . . ."
"Red was throbbing with youthful vitality."
". . . the two of them threshed wildly in a passionate embrace. . . ."
". . . the moment of extreme fruition came upon them. . . ."
". . . exhilaration exploded into a shower of shooting stars. . . ."
". . . Audrey Fowler . . . embroils him in a scheme that erupts into a violent climax."
"Sylvia Nolan, a self-confessed half-and-half female. . . ."
"She-males are campus scandals."
The steam never seems to stop in Male Lover by the prolific American pulp-fiction writer Orrie Hitt (1916-1975), published in New York as a "Gaslight Book" by L. S. Publications Corp. in 1964. It has it all: a washed-up athlete; youthful trauma; suggestive gay sex; same-sex marriage; a conniving transsexual; seduction; homophobia; suicide; conspiracy; blackmail; murder; and, of course, a tragic end. Unfortunately, the story is way too jumbled: too many sub-plots; too many unnecessary flashbacks; one blackmail scheme after another; too much death and mayhem.
The story revolves around the secretly-gay pro-football player Edwin “Red” Charlton at the end of his career. The narrative is too convoluted to synopsize here, but we are amused that it begins with Red playing his last game for the appropriately-named Piston Drivers. We are also taken by the bold lines and coloring of the cover art. Unfortunately, the artist is anonymous, but whoever it was, they were the main cover artist for Gaslight Books, a short-lived but productive series.

Tea: Harney and Sons Earl Grey Supreme; a weird Lipton black tea with blackcurrant
Perfume: Lorrainna (magnolia blossoms, lilac, orris root, and ambergris accord), with which I remain a little obsessed.
Reading: finished my reread of Patricia A. McKillip, Winter Rose. It's a lovely, dreamy little novel, with beautiful, if ultimately somewhat repetitive imagery. It also doesn't have much of a plot, and I don't know how well it works as a Tam Lin adaptation; there's this particular kind of energy and momentum in the ballad which this novel is utterly lacking. But I was glad to read it again, and it was a good fit for me in this moment.

Gosh I'm always going to be sad about third sem akeshu because finally they can get to know each other better and become genuine friends without all the masks and lies between them but of course the elephant in the room (Goro being Akira's wish) has to stand in-between them and only Goro knows this until Akira finally finds out the truth on the last day.
Also Akira's phone call with Akechi in the third sem is the most Akira has ever said to someone so like you can tell despite the situation, Akira is happy Akechi is there again. I think that's why Akira doesn't press too much about how Akechi is alive after getting shot twice because he's just grateful enough to have Akechi back.
It's genuinely just sad all around with Akechi suddenly realizing this boy he tried to kill twice is the same boy that grieved for him so strongly that Akechi became his wish; I think Akechi probably spent his time alone mostly contemplating that, how strange it must be to Akechi that he's someone greatest regret and greatest wish; that kind of love and devotion exist just for him.
So yeah I think that even in canon if Akechi is still alive, once he's done dealing with all the issues, he's going to find Akira again. I doubt he can stay away from Akira that long. Especially seeing as in canon Akira is also bringing Akechi's glove anywhere with him. The way Akira reached out for Akechi's glove when he met Muhen on his last day in Tokyo will always get to me. That's his comfort item, sir ToT
BUCKLE UP I'M GONNA MAKE ANOTHER ESSAY REPLY IN A READ MORE-
I really love the confirmation that they're both each other's wish… I think even Goro realizes that, but he knows he can't allow it to be because it's not right, and he's already chosen his path.
I'm unsure which phone call you're talking about, was it the part where Goro reports to us his findings about the fake reality? I agree regardless that Akira is happy that Goro is present, and I also think he never tries to question it because he doesn't want to unravel anything… or rather he doesn't want to sprout doubt in his heart.
I know it was never clearly stated why it was that Wakaba and Haru papa disappeared, but Goro remained. In my opinion it WAS for the sake of the plot twist and his life was used as a bargaining chip by Maruki (which is kind of fucked up). Though it could also just be because Goro isn't actually dead but he believes he is, but then it makes me think, isn't it a little more fucked up that Maruki doesn't say anything about it post-fake reality? Considering he had the power to alter reality and had so much surveillance over mementos.
I think about it a lot, what Goro is like when he gets home to his apartment after every day in that fake reality. I imagine he was consistently gathering information but it's almost like he tried to make himself busy so he wouldn't think about things to do with Akira.
I personally think of "no more what ifs" as so applicable to third sem as well, he's come face to face with another crossroad. He doesn't regret his choices, and he's ready to commit to them, but I think at this new fork he's feeling his convictions wavering... all because he's been able to experience the "what if" himself, even if it's through this distorted means. I think he's fully aware that Akira wants him to be in this reality, and he's also aware that he himself wants to be with Akira... it's so sad how much he seems to hold back, he becomes so distant... and yet his gentleness peeks out in easy to miss moments like his voice lines during battle etc. God I'm so weak for it.
Yes I agree, he's going to find Akira and he'd commit to that other path at the crossroad he was at. No more holding back! I really really love that extra scene, they didn't have to do that at all... the glove means so much T__T
ok this took me an hour to write bc I was gathering my thoughts ajskhawe s orry I yap so much ty for your message!

Some change has come at last. I got my period the day before my last final (which I passed with an A, by the way) and was out the entire day staring at the altar that is my bedroom walls and thanking some kind of God for sending me blood on a day where it makes no difference.
I dyed my hair from red to brown and the humidity has turned me into a forest hag burning sellery and orris and whispering to myself. I am no longer as bored as I was a couple of weeks ago and I've been out drinking with friends most evenings. Yesterday I took a trip to an old monetary and got lost in the fantasy of becoming a monk. I wanna bleed, I wanna hurt the way that boys do. On the highway, it was raining pretty heavily and I had Nettles playing on repeat, watching the powerlines gracefully slant across the fields of dew, between the old industrial towns, across state lines and spruce woods. There is something very majestic about them, I like to be above the tree tops on some viaduct or other and witness their rusted arms peek out here and there between the mountains. On the way back I had a burger in a middle-of-nowhere parking lot while the clouds broke into thunder. At home I played video games and then jerked off, which is my routine most days. I feel like myself again, with the weight of finals off my back. To celebrate my grandpatents took me to this caffé in the heart of a valley where it barely gets light. The owner was a sweet old lady in purple tights, a floral apron and gray pigtails. It was surprisingly easy to imagine what she looked like in the 80s. She told us that her chickens were recently brutally torn up by some animal and that people are saying it must have been a fox but all signs point elsewhere. Any suggestions are welcome. There's wolves here again after 50 years or so, but maybe it was some creature from the dark forests, stealing past her garden fences and plotting a massacre. What do you think?
In any way, things have moved deliberately into spring. The rhododendron in the yard is blooming. Many more afternoons. Always more blood to be discovered. The constants are the powerlines across the bleak hills and the meadows full of yarrow and my face in the mirror.
Yours truly

A handsome villain struts out of the orchard trumpeting an exuberance of salacious fruit—peach, guava and prunella. The creaminess of vanilla and caramel builds mouthwatering anticipation. Orris creates a velvet fuzz under Renaissance skies. The Machiavellian plot thickens as spices emerge—cardamom, ginger, cinnamon. Bark threatens to turn into wood; these amber daggers are hard. With one sip of amaretto you’re reminded that even a sweet peach’s stone can be poisonous.

Fay Wray and Glenda Farrell in Mystery of the Wax Museum (Michael Curtiz, 1933)
Cast: Lionel Atwill, Fay Wray, Glenda Farrell, Frank McHugh, Allen Vincent, Gavin Gordon, Edwin Maxwell, Holmes Herbert, Claude King, Arthur Edmund Carewe, Thomas E. Jackson, DeWitt Jennings, Matthew Betz, Monica Bannister. Screenplay: Don Mullaly, Carl Ericson, Charles Belden. Cinematography: Ray Rennahan. Art direction: Anton Grot. Film editing: George Amy.
The ever-imperiled Fay Wray gets higher billing, but the real star of Mystery of the Wax Museum is Glenda Farrell, playing an intrepid (what else?), tough-talking (ditto) newspaper reporter, Florence Dempsey. Flo's boss, Jim (Frank McHugh), gives her her walking papers, so she sets out to find a sensational story to save her job. She uncovers the sinister plot of Ivan Igor (Lionel Atwill), who is opening a new wax museum in New York. Igor had a similar museum in London, but it was losing money, so his partner in the business, Joe Worth (Edwin Maxwell), burned it down to collect the insurance. Igor was trapped in the conflagration but survived. Handicapped by his wounds, he trains new sculptors to re-create the glories of the old museum. One of the trainees is Ralph Burton (Allen Vincent), whose fiancée, Charlotte Duncan (Wray), turns out to be the spitting image of Igor's most prized sculpture in the old museum, an effigy of Marie Antoinette. Naturally, Igor plans to "sculpt" Charlotte into a new Marie: His method of capturing images is, let's say, not the traditional one. By a bit of breaking and entering, Flo manages to discover the macabre truth behind the wax museum's images. The plot gimmick -- a reporter uncovers a madman's schemes -- is exactly that of Doctor X (1932), Michael Curtiz's other venture into horror movie territory filmed in two-strip Technicolor, which also starred Atwill and Wray. Mystery of the Wax Museum is the better movie, with Farrell giving a better performance as the snoopy reporter than Lee Tracy in the earlier movie. It also has a neater plot, and a real creep factor in the spooky statues -- most of which are actors standing very still. Makeup artists Ray Romero and Perc Westmore and costume designer Orry-Kelly deserve special mention.

Nadaaniyan 2025 movie is a love drama directed by Shauna Gautam that will premiere on the OTT platform Netflix on March 7, 2025. The film's tone is romantic drama, with the theme of love and relationships. This is her debut Hindi film as a filmmaker, and there is no amusement. The film falls short of the expectations set by the trailer. Nadaaniyan stars Ibrahim Ali Khan, Khushi Kapoor, Suniel Shetty, Mahima Chaudhry, Jugal Hansraj, Dia Mirza, and Archana Puran Singh. Let's read Nadaaniyan movie review.

Which Netflix movie is Ibrahim in?
Nadaaniyan
Plot
Nadaaniyan tells the story of a girl who has a misunderstanding about one of her friends' boyfriends, but it is not her fault; her friend's boyfriend keeps messaging her, and she does not respond. To gain the trust of her friends, she hires a boy and pretends he is her boyfriend. Will her friends find out that the boy is not her boyfriend? Will she fall in love with the boy? Will the lad fall in love with her? To know more about this, watch the film.
Acting and Characters
Ibrahim Ali Khan's performance as Arjun was extremely underwhelming; he failed to connect emotionally with the character in any way, and his body language, facial expressions, and dialogues delivery did not match his role at all. He appears to be speaking dialogues in lines, indicating that he still has a lot to learn. His acting style is inconsistent throughout the film. This is Khushi Kapoor's third film as Piya; before this film, she appeared with Aamir Khan's son Junaid Khan in the recently released Loveyapa. Her performance in both films was average; her acting can only be described as good in one scene where she confronts her father; otherwise, there is nothing unique in her acting throughout the film; her body language, facial expressions, and dialogues delivery are also below average. She still has to learn the intricacies of acting. It appears that she is acting artificially. Her chemistry with Ibrahim Ali Khan is likewise not compatible. Apart from Sunil Shetty and Mahima Chaudhry as Piya's parents, and Jugal Hansraj and Dia Mirza as Arjun's parents, only Dia Mirza's performance is commendable. The other three actors delivered lackluster performances. Among Piya's acquaintances, Neel Dewan, Apoorva Mukhija, Aaliyah Qureishi, Agasthya Shah, and Dev Agasteya all failed to make an impression as actors. Meezaan Jafri and Orry's guest roles were wasted. Archana Puran Singh's acting can also be described as decent.
Direction
This film was directed by Shauna Gautam. This is her first debut directorial a Hindi film. She failed miserably as the film's director. She was unable to convey the subject in a novel manner, regulate the pace of the story, or elicit strong performances from the actors. The film failed to connect with the audience emotionally and meet their expectations. Yes, it kept the film's tone intact. The film has nothing new; it is the same old plot, except for two lip-kissing scenes between the hero and heroine inserted at the conclusion for the audience to enjoy while exiting the cinema hall.
Cinematography
The film is very beautifully picturized. The camera has been utilized from various perspectives. The aerial view scenes have also been wonderfully done. The film's lighting and color scheme perfectly complement its tone and content. The camera framing is also appropriate. The cinematography has done an excellent job of capturing the film's settings and production design.
Story Screenplay Dialogue
The film's storyline and screenplay are quite weak and loose. The story and screenplay move at a leisurely pace. At times, the film becomes boring. There is no novelty in the climax sequence either. It appears that we are seeing the end of an old film. The dialogues are also written in Hinglish. They will pass over those whose English is inadequate. The screenplay contributes nothing to characters development. The tale is entirely predictable and offers nothing new.
Tumblr media
Ibrahim Ali Khan and Khushi Kapoor in Nadaaniyan Movie (Credit: Screenshot/Dharmatic Entertainment)
Editing
The film's pace is slow, and several sequences appear to be extraneous and might have been eliminated, as well as the film's length.
Choreography
Only one song in Vijay Ganguly's choreography can be described as mediocre: the Tirkit Dhoom dance sequence. Both performers had good dance moves and attitudes.
Music
Sachin-Jigar's music is mediocre and contributes little to strengthen the film. One or two tracks, such as the title track Nadaniyaan, Ishq Mein, and Galatfahmi, have acceptable music. Their music had no remarkable impact on the movie.
Nadaaniyan Song
The Nadaaniyan songs, composed by Amitabh Bhattacharya, are likewise written to fit the film's tone.
Production Design
The film's settings and locations appear credible concerning the tale and reflect the film's tone and theme. The designs and cultural surroundings are accurate for today's period. The production design has produced a universe that is unique in some ways.
Costume Design
Anaita Shroff Adajania's outfit design is excellent, particularly Khushi Kapoor's designs, which are quite gorgeous, and she looks stunning in them. Her accessories and style are incredible, and the costume design has complemented her charm. The outfit design for all the characters is well-suited to the film's story and emotions. Everyone's costumes are consistent with the tone.
Background Score.
Tushar Lall's background score does not add to the tone of the plot or scenes. It is completely out of character for the film's genre. It appears natural and spectacular just in a few scenes.
Sound Design
Sohel Sanwari's sound design increases the emotions and complements the tone of the picture. It also has visual appeal, and it is superb in several sequences. The South design also stands out in various scenes.
Climax
The climax lacks innovation and appears to be a scene from an old film, with the boy and girl meeting and then kissing each other on the lips twice.
Opinion
You might watch the movie simply to pass the time.
Rating
4.5/10
Disadvantages
The same old scenes we've seen in countless old movies: husband and wife fighting, another lady entering the husband's life and becoming pregnant, and husband and wife divorcing. Mother is going to her mother's house with her daughter. Finally, the lead actress kisses her lips. Two lovers fight and separate. In which the girl is not to blame, but the male fights and leaves, friends refuse to call their friend's boyfriend and explain why she is unable to speak with him. The girlfriend's photo with someone else goes viral on social media. Is it not possible to purchase a new phone if the current one is broken? The audience is slightly entertained by the heroine wearing a bikini. Ibrahim Ali Khan's birthday, March 5, 2025, marked the film's premiere.
Facts
Urmila Matondkar has worked with all the actors in this film, including Sunil Shetty in filmmaker Ram Gopal Varma's Jungle (2000) in a single scene. Mahima Chaudhary appears in Harry Baweja's Deewane (2000) and director Rajkumar Santoshi's Lajja (2001) in only one song. Tea: a black tea with marigold and safflower.
Perfume: Lorrainna (magnolia blossoms, lilac, orris root, and ambergris accord) - lilac lilac lilac lilac! I love flowers so much.
Reading: finished Stephen M. Silverman, Sondheim, which mostly left me hoping for a substantive Sondheim biography at some point.
Watching: rewatched Deep Space Nine 3.22 "Explorers" and 3.24 "Shakaar" (we'll get back to "The Die is Cast" when I'm up for watching a torture scene). I'd forgotten how much of "Shakaar" is just people doing trauma reenactment, and also how ridiculous the low stakes Julian & Miles b-plots are in both episodes.
