Let’s stick together

There is a lack of patience among Evertonians that manifests itself on Twitter and Instagram that borders on the ridiculous and is an embarrassment. That said, last night was a terrible performance. The otpimism that surfaced at the end of last season is a bubble that’s been burst. And while there’s a balance to be struck, some issues are a concern.

Not just because of a defeat at Villa, but because the lack of scoring that surfaced in preseason - that some attributed to the fact that it was JUST preseason - is still a big concern. I firmly believe the plan all along was to ease Moise Kean into his Premier League career, slowly and methodically. Three games in its clear that plan needs to be ripped up and Kean needs to be the focal point around which this team is built. Starting this week.

DCL works hard and runs tirelessly but a striker will only be judged against his goal scoring return and his simply isn’t good enough. When you don’t get many chances, you need to be decisive and clinical when they come along. We need so much more from that position which is why Kean has to participate from the start of games moving forward rather than as a 70th minute substitute.

Selling Idrissa Gueye, much like when we lost Lukaku is also a concern. Silva knew that. It was why there were stories about him demanding a like-for-like replacement in the newspapers. The hole that Gueye has left behind in our midfield was there for everyone to see last night. The Silva, Brand, Moshiri tri-factor has been described as a “project”. Believing in a project that ultimately sells one of your best players every few years however is tough. JPG could well - and I think he will - be a superb player for our club but as with most things at Everton it’s going to “take time”. If only I had a pound for everytime somebody said that to me... and in the meantime it’s frustrating.

It doesn’t get any easier when there are teams in the Premier League that have added players this summer that have hit the ground running and are winning games today. They’re not still “trying to get fit”. They’re not still “finding their feet”. They’re on the pitch, playing and doing the business, today. Haller, the new striker for West Ham who bagged two today being a perfect example, but there are others. Then there are results like Palace winning at Old Trafford. Could Everton have visited Man Utd and pulled off a result like that, particularly a comeback win in the 92nd minute. At that stage of the game, I suspect Everton would have been hanging on for grim death to a point we would have championed had we held onto it.

These frustrations manifest themselves in ways that years ago would have just been a conversation over a pint in the pub. Today’s social media means that those opinions are shared with everybody and is a worry for those of us who want to help our players achieve their full potential rather than subject them to vitriol - and I despair when I hear of them being sent abusive tweets.

Google rolls out maximize conversion value smart bidding strategy

Maximize conversion value is now available.

The newest smart bidding strategy in Google Ads’ lineup, maximize conversion value, is now available in all Search campaigns.

First announced at Google Marketing Live (GML) in May, maximize conversion value aims to optimize for the greatest conversion value within budget.

As with maximize conversions, it will try to spend your budget, so set it accordingly. However, I’ve noticed that when a campaign that is spending well below its daily budget, on average, Google will show an option to lower your daily budget based on your actual average daily spend.

Google says maximize conversion value uses historical campaign data and the searcher’s contextual signals to determine the “otpimal CPC bid��� at auction time.

To use or test out maximize conversion value, you’ll need to be using transaction-specific values or have set conversion values for the conversion types you’re optimizing for from the Conversion page under Tools.

Conversion value rules still to come. Google also teased conversion value rules at GML to give advertisers more flexibility in assigning value to conversion actions. When it becomes available, rules can be set based on characteristics such as location, device and audience.

Why we should care. As we noted in May, manual bidding is still available in Google, but it’s largely de-emphasized and missing some capabilities. With the proliferation of smart bidding strategies, it’s important to understand how each is designed to work and which goals, settings and metrics best align with each. For example, Google notes that if you need to hit return on ad spend goals, you may want to set a target ROAS with the strategy, while understanding how that target may impact optimization.

Dreams

here are the dreams ive had in 2015 and 2016 that were somewhat notable to me. ive been told my dreams are especially weird but that may becase i only take a note of weird/notable dreams

i just mrembered i had a dream last night that i bbought more genmaicha maybe there is a hidden meaning to my dream i had a dream i flew to portland to go to a punk show but i never made it out of the airport, which was very large and surrounded by grand canyon-like mesas. i was lost and at one point had to pass a tiger that was loose, i thought i would die. i couldn't remember my flight there so i decided i must be there illegaly. i was looking for a way to get out without going thru departures. i met two people who tried to help mme but they just told me to jump thru a glass window and i decided that i couldnt remeber having done anything wrong so i'd just leave normally.   the entire dream i was carrying a teddy bear i used to have as a kid when i woke up i was relieved but also disappointed i didnt get to go to the show i had a dream about being chased by a gorilla last night. i kept reminding myself that humans have incredible endurance, but i failed to reckon with the fact that gorillas, altho they not have the endurance of humans, can run at 120km/h for short distances,. in my dream. I had a dream Stephen fry taught me to roll my rs by shouting TRRRRRUMP as loud as I could i had a dream I went to a socialist meeting thing and I was sat there wrapped up in a blanket slid way down on the chair feeling self conscious for being so relaxed. there was a little socialist play and everything. I wondered if the authorities would know because in history always seems to know when some person went to one of these things but I decided I was paranoid. anyway thn it started raining indoors and I went to gather my things but I could find anything and as I searched I gradually lost more things like my clothes. then I woke and wondered why my dreams often seem to be at 6fps i cant remember what my dream was but i do i remember that it got stuck in a loop that went on that i felt was a long time, then i woke up i had a dream that wearing boxers was heteronormative my drunken dreams last night basically consisted of my entire saturday hangover in advnace, but in the dream my hangover was worse oh i just recalled i h ad a classic dream last night of all my teeth falling out, at which point i was like "oh this is a dream. is it a dream?" and concentrating hard to figure it was a dream. there was some dream quality that always assured me it was a dream, but immediately after i'd have to check again, so the dream fell away and it was just me, teeth loose in my mouth, constantly asking myself "am i dreaming?" last night i had dream that i found a way to do everything much better, which was for there to be three of me at all times. when i woke up i wsa like "ugh, now i have to get up 3 times" last night i had a dream or dreams.i cannot remember if the following is 2 different dreams or the same dream. 1) i wore a tie to work everyday; it was my highschool tie (in the uk we got school uniforms, that have ties often) 2) someone bought me saints row gat out of hell on steam 2016 i had a dream i was doing a trick on the guitar that invovled passing electricity through the strings, at a level where it would just get increasingly uncomfortable the more you played. afterwards i was llike "i am sure glad that was with nylon strings, rather than steel strings," and the rest of the dream was spent wondering about the conducting properties of plastics i had a dream that there was a new class of animals, called supermammals, that were being created to some kind of global evolutionary pressure. my dream was sure to note that there were also marsupial supermammals, that were also called supermammals, but they were just marsupials subjected to the same pressures, and not actually mammals. the only difference was that supermammals used their hearing a lot more, so you could befriend them by talking to them, the logic being that they could tell, by echolocation, that you weren't making threatening movements towards them, but you had to keep talking to them all th eitme i had a dream last night that they made a rocky sequel that had a weird narrative device to retcon the first movie into rocky winning i had a dream valve put out a grill because gaben was sick of the grills he was buying and made his own. we figured otu taht the otpimal way was to put the expensive valve grill on top of our old cheap grill and turn on the old one 2017 i had a dream i kept on trying to play recuerdos de la alhambra but it kept coming out as radioheads street spirit with a tremolo part. d'oh!!! i had a dream last night i took some drugs and all they did was make me incredibly anxious. dreams last night i dreamt i was in a car crash and the car crumpled around me until i was stuck in that airplane crash position in the dark running out of air and i woke up all adrenaline-like,. brains suck and are not my friend

Absolution dimensions

Throughout the programming of this system we have been using a 3440x1440 resolution display. Unfortunately we found out that a 1920x1080 couldn't display everything which was what the lab computers run at. We made an attempt at making the program responsive but ultimately dropped it in favour of making the program otpimal to 1920x1080 (and other similar) displays only. This involved disabling the option to resize the program.

Toolkit is a java library that allows your program to access hardware details. Making the window responsive was easy. But we defined absolute positions for the variables in the window (buttons, slider, etc). This also meant resizing the grid which was successful:

But trying to make all of these variables responsive would have caused us to spent time we didn't have anymore:

At this point, we've finished our project and only have minor modifications to make.

CSS Parsing

CSS is a context free grammar. The output of it's parser is a StyleSheet object whose purpose ultimately is to obtain style rules from selectors.

Script Processing

Typically, script tags are processed immeditely as they are encountered. The parser halts until the script has been downloaded and processed unless it has been marked as async or deferred.

Some browsers optimize this by "parsing ahead" and looking for more files to download. This optimization does not affect the DOM tree.

Tree construction wraps up by executing any scripts that were set as "deferred".

Script and CSS interaction

Typically CSS can be processed asynchronously to the DOM as it cannot affect it's logical construction. A complication occurs when a script attempts to access style info. Browsers may handle this differently but any good browser will favor determinism over performance. It is logical to conclude that JS querying CSS may introduce load hitches.

Render Tree Construction

The Render Tree is actually constructed while the DOM Tree is constructed. The root node is the full browser render viewport dimension; created by the discovery of html and body tags. The render tree relies heavily on the CSS to determine how it gets constructed. It must compute style data for each DOM node.

Style computation faces 3 priciple challenges- size of style data, scope of workload matching selectors, and sheer complexity of resolving cascading behaviors.

To help cope, various optimizations may be relied upon. WebKit relies on sharing style objects so long as they meet a set of criteria. Think of this as a dictionary.

Firefox, on the other hand, relies on an additional tree- the Rule Tree. This tree consists of nodes that correspond to previously generated css resolutions. As document nodes are processed, the rule tree is simultaneously generated and relied upon as a sort of cache of css style determinations.

In any case, it can be concluded that a page can be made to perform more optimally by attempting to minimize the number of unique css selector scenarios a browser must resolve.

Cascade Ordering

Due to the fact that there may be many conflicting style rules, a procedure for resolving conflicting styles has been established and is implemented by the browsers in accordance with the specification.

There are two hierarchies as it comes to cascading styles: 1) Order of style sheet origin 2) Order of selector specificity.

The first is simple- favor as follows (most to least):

User Important, Author Important, User Normal, Author Normal, Browser Default.

The second, selector specificity, assigns a score of specificity to selectors based on how granular the selector is. Without bogging down with the exact details, the number is basically incremented by counting the number of id's, classes, etc are used in the selector and an appropriately high base number is used to ensure the specificiations priorities. for example (but not confirmed accurate): ...

Layout Computation

The layout process is carried out left-to-right, top-to-bottom. This is called the layout flow. Later elements typically do not impact earlier elements.

The root frame begins at the very top left of the render viewport.

Layout is recursive. Parents compute their frame, and children are wholly contained therein.

Layout can be retriggered for a few reasons. The entire layout tree can be recomputed when the browser is resized or when style or font changes are made. Conversely, layout can be recomputed incrementally, in the event of asyncrhonous DOM changes (such as script driven DOM insertions etc). In either event, layout it flow is recomputed (sometimes called "reflow"), but flagging a "dirty" bit on the renderer element affected by the change.

Similar to style, scripts that query layout information (such as offsets) may force the otherwise asynchronous layout procedure to be carried out synchronously.

Painting

In the painting stage, the render tree is traversed each node's "paint" method is called.

Like the layout stage, the paint stage can be comprehensive or incremental. I'm not sure what causes global repainting. Incremental repaints occur when renderer nodes repaint but do not affect other parts of the rendered view.

When a rectangle is invalidated due to painting, the OS generates a paint event.

Painting occurs in this way back to front, and is likely subject to overdraw, which is a natural performance hit. Some browser specific otpimizations are made to minimize the impact of this, but authoring should still take overdraw into consideration.
