incredibly niche content but like I said I've been going through my improperly named art files trying to rehome things properly
and I've got it down to under 400 files based on actually finding things on deviantart or whatever and now I can only do my best guess based on the style of the piece
which should be easy enough because, like I've said before, my art style changes frequently
but I swear to god if I find one more piece that I can only save as March 2008 I will lose my mind what was I doing
I drew all of this within the span of one month and I know they're not like, excessively different or anything but like. just the "I remember when I was drawing like this it was *checks notes* March of 2008" of it all please let me rest

#my art#overwhelmingly most of these are from 2006 - 2009#I was not organized in high school I guess lol

🚨 BREAKING NEWS ALERT 🚨 🚨
John Conyers Jr., long-serving congressman who co-founded Congressional Black Caucus, dies at 90
By John Otis | Published October 27 at 4:36 PM ET | Washington Post | Posted October 27, 2019 |
John Conyers Jr., who became the longest-serving African American in Congress, co-founded the Congressional Black Caucus and helped create a national holiday in the name of the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. but whose career rapidly crumbled at 88 when he resigned amid sexual harassment allegations, died Oct. 27 at his home in Detroit. He was 90.
His spokeswoman Holly Baird confirmed the death. Additional details were not immediately available.
A liberal Democrat from what is now Detroit’s 13th Congressional District, Mr. Conyers was first elected in 1964, becoming one of five African Americans in the House. His overwhelmingly Democratic constituents reelected him 26 times over a period spanning 10 presidents, from Lyndon B. Johnson to Donald Trump.
As the longest-serving member at the time of his resignation, Mr. Conyers earned the title “dean of the House of Representatives,” and this job security allowed him to promote progressive, sometimes controversial causes that won him a national following.
He co-sponsored the Voting Rights Act of 1965, which prohibited discrimination at the ballot box. His fierce criticism of the Vietnam War led to clashes with Johnson and landed him on Richard M. Nixon’s “enemies list” of political opponents.
After the terrorist attacks of Sept. 11, 2001, Mr. Conyers voted against the USA Patriot Act because he feared it would roll back civil liberties. He later suggested that President George W. Bush should be impeached, saying he misled the country ahead of the 2003 U.S. invasion of Iraq.
Mr. Conyers’s twilight years were marred by allegations of sexual harassment. According to legal documents published by the online publication BuzzFeed in November 2017, several of his female staff members claimed that he had approached them to request sex and that he had engaged in unwanted touching and other impropriety.
One former staff member received a settlement of more than $27,000 from Mr. Conyers’s office after alleging in 2015 that he fired her for not accepting his sexual advances. The congressman denied any wrongdoing. But after the House Ethics Committee opened an investigation and numerous representatives called for him to step down in November 2017, Mr. Conyers step down from hs post as top Democrat on the House Judiciary Committee. The next month, he announced his resignation, after 52 years in office.
“My legacy can’t be compromised or diminished in any way by what we are going through now,” Mr. Conyers declared defiantly. “This too shall pass.”
Before the scandal, Mr. Conyers had been an inspiration to African Americans from Detroit to the Deep South and became, in effect, a member of Congress at large.
“In many districts around the country, black voters did not feel represented by their leaders so they would reach out to African American congressmen, like Conyers,” said Michael Fauntroy, who interned for Mr. Conyers in the early 1980s and is now an assistant professor of political science at Howard University.
Mr. Conyers, in turn, urged skeptical African Americans to get involved in politics. One of his early mottos was: “Register, vote, run for office. It’s power that counts.” To better harness that power and secure passage of legislation on poverty, racism, human rights, unfair tax policies and health care, Mr. Conyers and 12 other African American House members founded the Congressional Black Caucus in 1971.
Mr. Conyers strongly backed the Rev. Jesse Jackson’s 1984 campaign for the Democratic presidential nomination and was an early supporter of candidate Barack Obama, who was then a Democratic senator from Illinois. Yet Mr. Conyers also could be caustic of fellow Democrats to demonstrate that he was not blindly loyal to anyone.
In 1979, he described President Jimmy Carter as a “hopeless, demented, honest, well-intentioned nerd who will never get past his first administration.” Decades later, Mr. Conyers criticized Obama for making foreign policy too dependent on military muscle. His intention, Mr. Conyers said of Obama, was “to make him a better president.”
He presented himself as an emeritus member of the Washington establishment, and had participated in many high-profile political battles.
Mr. Conyers was the only member of the House Judiciary Committee to take part in impeachment proceedings against President Richard Nixon in 1974 for the Watergate bugging scandal and coverup, and against President Bill Clinton in 1998 for lying about his affair with White House intern Monica S. Lewinsky.
Mr. Conyers considered Nixon a criminal and helped draft articles of impeachment against the president before he resigned. However, he called the effort to impeach Clinton a Republican coup d’etat and “the most tragic event in my career.” He voted no when the House voted to impeach Clinton. Eight years later, Mr. Conyers became the first African American to chair the Judiciary Committee.
All along, Mr. Conyers was a master of the politics of symbolism. He hired civil rights activist Rosa Parks, who worked in his Detroit office for 20 years. He introduced numerous bills calling for reparations for the descendants of slaves, an issue that resonated among blacks but did not gain traction in Congress. More successful was his 15-year struggle to recognize King, the civil rights defender.
Four days after King was assassinated on April 4, 1968, and with the support of his widow, Coretta Scott King, Mr. Conyers proposed the first of many bills calling for a federal holiday in his honor.
The proposal met resistance from Republicans, notably Sen. Jesse Helms (N.C.), who accused King of Communist sympathies and complained that only one other holiday, Columbus Day, was named after a person.
Mr. Conyers kept pushing, millions of people signed petitions and entertainer Stevie Wonder pitched in with the hit single “Happy Birthday.” President Ronald Reagan in 1983 signed legislation setting aside the third Monday in January as Martin Luther King Jr. Day; the day was chosen because it was near King’s Jan. 15 birthday.
In a 2008 interview, Mr. Conyers called it “far and away the thing I am most proud of.”
But as the Detroit Free Press, his hometown paper, once described it, “For every brilliant move, there’s a dud.” Mr. Conyers was famous for missing votes on the House floor. Critics claimed that his effectiveness was dulled by growing arrogance and a refusal to compromise. He was prone to gaffes, prompting Time magazine political columnist Joe Klein to call him “foolishly incendiary.”
When Mr. Conyers ran for mayor of Detroit in 1989, challenging Democratic incumbent Coleman A. Young, he announced his bid by saying, “Move over, Big Daddy, I’m home.” Mr. Conyers finished third in the primary and then lost again in 1993.
Mr. Conyers could be a demanding boss. In addition to the allegations that he sexually harassed staff members, the House Ethics Committee investigated him for pressuring staff members to babysit for his children and to chauffeur him to private events in government vehicles.
After an investigation that lasted more than two years, the panel announced a deal in 2006 in which it dropped the inquiry in return for Mr. Conyers’s promise that he would not ask his staff members to do nonofficial work for him.
In 2009, Mr. Conyers’s wife, Monica Esters Conyers — a former campaign staff member 36 years his junior — was convicted of bribery while serving on the Detroit City Council and was sentenced to 37 months in prison.
John James Conyers Jr. was born in Detroit on May 16, 1929. He served in the Army Corps of Engineers during the Korean War. With the help of the G.I. Bill for veterans, he graduated from Detroit’s Wayne State University in 1957 and its law school in 1958.
His interest in public affairs was partly because of his father’s position as an international representative for the United Auto Workers and, for a time, Mr. Conyers worked as a labor lawyer. He also was a legislative assistant to Rep. John D. Dingell (D-Mich.), one of the few House members to serve even longer than Mr. Conyers.
In the early 1960s, local Democratic Party elders considered Mr. Conyers too young to pursue federal office. Despite their opposition, Mr. Conyers ran in the 1964 Democratic primary for what was then Detroit’s 1st Congressional District and won by a mere 45 votes. He then scored a landslide victory in the general election.
Mr. Conyers had two sons, John III and Carl. Complete information on survivors was not immediately available.
In office, Mr. Conyers went on to fend off challenges from candidates who hadn’t yet been born when he was first elected.

The Ultimate Supplement Guide: How Not to Waste Your Money
This supplement guide will provide reasons why you should take supplements regularly.
Go-To Supplement List
What are the best supplements to take?
It’s a common question I am asked by clients, looking to maximize their health.
Many people have no idea about what the best supplements are to take, so they simply consult Doctor Google for suggestions to “cure” a cold, allergies or constipation—only to find hundreds of different recommendations for products they should try.
They order it. Take it, and…sometimes it works. Often times it doesn’t or they have no clue if it’s really making a difference at all.
Be warned: NOT all supplements are created equal.
If you’ve ever wondered if you’re wasting your money or not, look no further. In this article on the best supplements to take, we will review:
What Makes a Supplement “Bad” or Good in the First Place
The Worst Supplements (NOT to Take)
The Best Healing & Maintenance Supplements
Bad vs. Good Supplements: The Supplement Guide
NOT ALL SUPPLEMENTS ARE CREATED EQUAL
The supplement industry is overwhelmingly filled with hundreds of thousands of products that are unregulated by the FDA.
Americans spend more than $30 billion on supplements every year—from products on Amazon to diet shakes and bars and fitness enhancements—looking to enhance their health, see “fast results” or perhaps out-supplement the pizza and cocktails they’d prefer to eat instead.
While some of these formulas are legit, a vast majority are NOT, and you may very well be pooping out those vitamins you spent $50 bucks on Amazon, or wondering if your supplements are actually working.
Additionally, many vitamins and other supplements simply degrade and lose effectiveness when exposed to excessive heat, light, oxygen in the air, or humidity during shipping and processing alone.
So should you even take supplements at all?! Stick with me.
There are definitely some legit formulas out there, BUT for starters, here’s what you should know about what NOT to take….
MOST SUPPLEMENTS DON’T WORK
Fish Oil Goes Rancid
The vast majority of fish oil supplements on shelves don’t contain the health benefits they claim (Wang et al, 2016) —as many of the formulas go “rancid” in high heat conditions.
Vitamin D Marketing is Hype
That Vitamin D you’re taking may actually be toxic to your health. Especially if you actually aren’t deficient in the vitamin at all. Many people take the supplement for years after an initial diagnosis of “low Vitamin D”—only to later find out they are “overloaded” with it or their body didn’t actually need it in the first place (they were actually deficient in Parathyroid Hormone—not Vitamin D (Abrams et al, 2005).
You Pee Out Your Multi-Vitamins
Multi-vitamins may make you FEEL “healthier” because you’re taking a pill with “everything” in it—but many of the nutrients are useless. For instance, Folic Acid in multi-vitamins is the non-absorbable version of Folate (Powers, 2007), and is toxic to your body (Troen et al, 2006). And calcium may be doing your body more harm than good as it is related to increased risk for “calcification” of your arteries and blood vessels (Lutsey & Michos, 2013). As for the claims that you need a multi-vitamin to “prevent” disease? Bunk. A study (Neuhouser et al, 2009) of 160,000 women taking a multi-vitamin found that “multivitamins failed to prevent cancer, heart disease, and all causes of death for all women. Whether the women were healthy eaters or ate very few fruits and vegetables, the results were the same.”
Iron Supplements Are Dangerous
Low in iron? Your doc may tell you to take an iron supplement, however if you are actually low in Vitamin B or Vitamin A, you may actually NOT be deficient in iron, even if it shows up on your blood work (Allen, 2002) & (Bhardwaj et al, 2015). In addition, if you have digestive issues and low stomach acid, you’re more at risk for ALL nutrient deficiencies. Fix the gut health and you may see iron levels and other labels normalize. Taking iron supplements if unnecessary can send your iron levels overboard.
Most Probiotics Contain Probiotics You Don’t Need
Most supplemental probiotics contain lactic acid bacteria—strains of bacteria most human microbiomes are sufficient in (sometimes even “overgrown” with)—and we don’t need. In addition, lactic acid bacterial formulas have a greater risk of being destroyed during processing and as a result, by the time they get to the capsule or bottle, there’s barely any—if anything—left to house your gut.
A review of 7 studies with more than 1300 citations showed that the use of these popular lactic acid strains made no significant difference on the composition of fecal (poop) bacteria health (Kristensen et al, 2016). Another study showed that 15 out of 16 probiotics on shelves did not contain the probiotics they claimed on the label. (Lewis et al, 2016).
Many products make claims regarding the number of organisms in the product, but these typically refer to the numbers at the time of manufacture, which can be very different from the amount still viable at the time of purchase. Exposure to heat, moisture and oxygen can all negatively affect survival of probiotics. (Kolacek et al, 2017).
Your Protein Powder Doesn’t Really Have Protein
Your favorite protein powder may not actually have any of the protein the label claims at all. Many commercial products on shelves are stocked with additives, filler proteins and chemicals your body doesn’t recognize as “food” and that cause ill side effects—like “leaky gut,” bloating, and constipation.
…Just to name a few studies.
THE WORST SUPPLEMENTS TO AVOID
Beyond the studies, revealing the downsides of some supplements, it’s also vital to recognize that even with “necessary” vitamins and minerals (such as Vitamin C if you catch a cold or digestive enzymes to ease digestion), NOT all formulas are the same.
Avoid these 3 things:
Waxy, Shiny Capsules Some companies coat supplements with shellac, wax, and hydroxypropylmethylcellulose, to keep the moisture out so the pills have a longer shelf life. While this may be good for preservation, it is not good for you. These coatings can decrease the solubility of a multivitamin tablet or capsule, reducing its ability to readily disintegrate.
Sugar If your supplement has sugar, corn syrup solids, artificial sweeteners or high-fructose corn syrup…run. Far away. Sugar + vitamins is not the medicine you need.
Fillers & Additives Similar to the sugar conundrum, many supplements contain binders and fillers to make the ingredients stick together. The result? Poor disintegration rates for tablets (pills) and capsules in your gut and digestive irritation.
SUPPLEMENT GUIDE: WHAT SHOULD I TAKE?!
In an ideal world, we’d be able to get all of our nutrients from the foods we eat.
Unfortunately, this isn’t the case. Only 1 in 10 Americans eat the recommended number of veggies (3) and fruits (2) every day.
Not to mention the fact, that even if you do eat your fruits and veggies, many of them are laden with pesticides and chemicals that are not best for our bodies. In addition, our meat and protein sources run a wide gamut. Sustainable proteins are best—reaching for pastured, organic, grass-fed and wild-caught sources as much as possible.
The solution?
Supplements can help fill the gaps from any nutrient deficiencies we may encounter, as well as help support our overall health as “healing agents” during times of body imbalance.
Which ones should you take?
There are 2 types of supplements I “prescribe” for clients looking for the right formulas:
Healing Supplements
Maintenance Supplements
The goal? NOT to remain on TONS of supplements forever.
Healing Supplements=Short Term Use “Healing” Supplements as short-term solutions for helping bridge the gap to better health, such as taking Oregano Oil when you catch a cold, or Anti-Microbial Herbs to get rid of unhealthy gut bacteria.Maintenance Supplements=Boost Nutrients in Foods
As for Maintenance supplement guide, I recommend a few staple baselines, like a Probiotic and Pre-biotic, just like I recommend drinking water and eating lots of veggies, proteins and healthy fats, to maximize your digestion and the nutrients you get from the foods you eat.
4 ESSENTIAL PRINCIPLES FOR SUPPLEMENTING
How to know which ones to use and when? This is your ultimate supplement guide!
Use these 4 essential guiding principles to help you rule out what to take and not take.
Consume nutrients from real, whole foods as much as possible.
Focus on maximizing digestion and gut health. If your gut is unhealthy or “leaky” then you’re not going to absorb your nutrients or vitamins in the first place. (If anything, these are the supplements where I invest my money).
Take nutrients that you are deficient in in their naturally occurring form (as opposed to in shakes, multi-vitamins or fortified foods)
Be picky with what you take. (The cheaper deal is not always the better deal for your body, and instead of asking Doctor Google what to take, consider working with a practitioner to get a custom supplement plan https://drlauryn.com/work-with-me/ built for your body if you’re interested in hacking your health)
ESSENTIAL SUPPLEMENT GUIDE WHEN SHOPPING
So, now the big question: Which specific supplements are a waste and which ones are must? Use this as your supplement guide.

서진이네 6회 6화 다시 보기 (소나기,티비나무)
서진이네 6회 6화 다시 보기 (소나기,티비나무)
Even before winning the World Cup, it has been almost fixedly included in the TOP 3 along with Pele and Diego Maradona in the rankings of all-time players selected by various soccer media, and after solving the final puzzle of winning the World Cup, the majority of opinions are that it is the GOAT of soccer. .[35][36][37] In fact, Messi has won every competition he can participate in as a player,서진이네 6회 6화 다시 보기 (소나기,티비나무) along with countless individual awards. Unless a new competition is created, Messi has nothing to challenge. To put it simply, there are only cumulative records that cannot be achieved in a short period of time, such as Cristiano Ronaldo's most goals in football history, the most goals in the UEFA Champions League [38] and the most goals in an A match [39].
In the 2006-07 season, at the age of 19, Messi finished third at the 2007 Ballon d'Or and second at the 2007 FIFA World Player of the Year. Two years later, in the 09-10 season, at the age of 22, he won the 2009 Ballon d'Or and the 2009 FIFA World Player of the Year, rising to the top of the world. From this time until the current 22-23 season, Messi reigned at the top for more than 10 years, 서진이네 6회 6화 다시 보기 (소나기,티비나무)winning a total of 7 Ballon d'Or [40] and 7 FIFA Player of the Year [41], and has been running long without major ups and downs. [42]
In addition, 4 UEFA Champions League titles, 4 consecutive UEFA Champions League top scorers, 6 UEFA Champions League all-time top scorers, most points scored in a single season[43], most goals in a single season[44], most goals in a single year[45] ], 1st place in La Liga all-time scoring, 1st place in all-time assists in La Liga, 4 서진이네 6회 6화 다시 보기 (소나기,티비나무)consecutive Ballon d'Or awards, 4 consecutive Ballon d'Or awards, 2 UEFA Player of the Year awards, 4 consecutive MOMs in 4 World Cup matches, most MOMs in World Cup history, most in a single club Following records such as goals, the fact that he is overwhelmingly ranked first in dribble success rate, through pass success rate, rating [46], number of MOM selections, and other detailed indicators also proves his status.
In fact, in evaluating Messi, these award history and records do not have a big meaning. Since his debut on the European stage, he has been proving on the field every week why he is worthy of entering the ranks of the best of all time. When the abilities required of an 서진이네 6회 6화 다시 보기 (소나기,티비나무)attacker are subdivided, such as playmaking based on wide vision and judgment, linkage and passing, dribbling, goal determination, powerful mid-range shots and free kicks, Messi is overwhelming in almost all areas of attack except post play. shows Even throughout the entire history of football, it is very rare for a player to show the best performance in all areas of the attack, except for extremely special cases such as Pele and Maradona. In particular, in modern times, the roles that players have to perform have been divided, 서진이네 6회 6화 다시 보기 (소나기,티비나무)and the burden and risk that each player has to bear has also been greatly reduced. In such modern soccer, Messi, like the above-mentioned players, shows an overwhelming appearance in almost all areas of the attack and takes charge of the team's attack alone.
Of course, Messi didn't show this from the beginning. Right after his debut until the 2008-09 season, he was a winger with devastating dribbling and good scoring ability. took From the 2014-15 season, when Xavi Hernandez stepped down from the starting 서진이네 6회 6화 다시 보기 (소나기,티비나무)lineup, he actively participated in the team's build-up, and his skills as a playmaker who coordinated matches and created chances were in full bloom. It did not stop there, but also developed weapons such as free kicks, and was able to be reborn as a complete striker.
In the 2008-09 season, Guardiola, who took over from Frank Rijkaard, carried out comprehensive reforms throughout the team to correct the sluggishness and lax team discipline of the previous season. Ronaldinho and Deco, who were the main players of the 서진이네 6회 6화 다시 보기 (소나기,티비나무)existing team, were let go, and the team was rebuilt around the midfield line of Messi, Xavi Hernandez, Andres Iniesta, and Sergio Busquets, who had already played a substantial ace role. And this led to the best result, this season, Barcelona recorded the treble of winning all of La Liga, Copa del Rey, and Champions League, and furthermore, in 2009, achieved the first six crowns in football history. Of course, Messi 서진이네 6회 6화 다시 보기 (소나기,티비나무)performed his best as an individual, and this season he was the top scorer in the Champions League with 9 goals in 12 Champions League matches, and scored 23 goals and 11 assists in 31 matches in La Liga.
In the 2010-11 season, which was evaluated as the best season in his entire career and his skills peaked, he led FC Barcelona in the 2010-11 season, which is considered one of the best teams in 서진이네 6회 6화 다시 보기 (소나기,티비나무)history, and was evaluated as one of the most dominant seasons that a player can show in football history. He showed the best performance to deserve it. In the early 2010s, Barcelona reigned as the best team in the world with the tiki-taka tactic perfected by Guardiola. And the passing ability and playmaking ability of midfielder Xavi-Iniesta-Busquets at the time made this strategy possible. However, it was possible 서진이네 6회 6화 다시 보기 (소나기,티비나무)because of Messi's personal skills that he was able to show crazy attack power even in this share football. Even if many teams try to imitate Barcelona in the early and mid-2010s, they cannot do it because they have not been able to find a unique presence called Lionel Messi.[47]

Are There More Registered Republicans Or Democrats
New Post has been published on https://www.patriotsnet.com/are-there-more-registered-republicans-or-democrats/
Are There More Registered Republicans Or Democrats
When Was The Republican And Democratic Parties Formed
The Democratic Party was founded by Andrew Jackson Martin Van Buren on January 8, 1828, in Baltimore, Maryland, USA. He was the United States’ seventh president but the first democratic President.
The Democratic Party’s shocking emergence can be linked to the country’s anti-federalist factions. It was during that time the United States of America gained independence from British colonial masters.
The anti-federalist factions, which democrats originated from, were also grouped into the Democrat-Republican party. This was done in 1792 by James Madison, Thomas Jefferson, and other federalists’ influential opponents.
On the other hand, the Republican Party is pretty much younger than the Democratic Party. It was formed in 1854 by anti-slavery modernizers and activists.
The republicans were against the expansion of slavery in Western territories. They fought hard to protect African Americans’ rights after the civil war.
The Republican Party is often known as GOP. The meaning is Grand Old Party. The first Republican President was Abraham Lincoln. From Lincoln’s emergence, Republican Party started gaining ground in America.
Republicans Narrow Voter Registration Gap In Swing States
October 1, 2020 / 1:54 PM / CBS News
National Voter Registration Day06:43
There are still more people registered as Democrats than Republicans in the battleground states of Florida, North Carolina and Pennsylvania, but Republicans have been gaining ground.
There are multiple forces at play: Republicans are making strides with registering voters, the two-party system is losing its appeal — especially with young people — and Democrats are being purged from the rolls as they either move out of those states or aren’t showing up at the polls.
“The people who have been removed from the file since are more Democrats than Republicans,” said Tom Bonier, CEO of TargetSmart, a nonprofit politics data firm. “Overwhelmingly, those people didn’t vote in 2016. What that tells you is these are people who had already either moved from the state or already died prior to November 2016, and they just hadn’t been removed at that point.”
The latest national CBS News Battleground Tracker poll shows Joe Biden with a 10-point lead among likely voters, but that lead narrows to within the margin of error in several key states, meaning the race could come down to who shows up at the polls on or before Election Day.
Registered Republicans Outnumber Democrats In West Virginia
The red wave that has swept West Virginia over the past decade now includes historic gains in Republican voter registration numbers, according to figures released Thursday.
There are now about 448,900 registered Republicans, or 36.8% of all registered voters in West Virginia, according to figures released by the secretary of state’s office. That compares to about 444,600 registered Democrats, or 36.5%.
“It’s an exciting day for the West Virginia Republican Party!” Roman Stauffer, the state Republican Party’s acting chairman, said in a statement.
An additional 275,000 registered voters, or 22.6%, had no party affiliation. The rest were affiliated with minor political parties.
According to the GOP, 11 counties switched from Democrat to Republican pluralities in 2020, and 24 of the 55 counties are now Republican majority or plurality. Berkeley County saw an increase of 3,694 Republican voters, the most in the state, the statement said.
In November, Shelley Moore Capito became the first Republican from West Virginia reelected to the U.S. Senate since 1907. Attorney General Patrick Morrisey, who won his third term in November, is the first Republican attorney general to hold the position since 1933.
Donald Trump won 68% of the state vote in the presidential race in 2016 and about 69% of the vote in November. A Democratic presidential candidate has not carried West Virginia since Bill Clinton in 1996.
U.S. Sen. Joe Manchin is the only Democrat to currently hold statewide office.
New York City Voters Shifted From Republican Or Independent To Democratic Party Ahead Of Primary
IT news
Voters
The Democratic Party in New York has consistently grown its voter base over the years and has also drawn previously party-unaffiliated and Republican voters to its ranks. In the last year alone, more than 88,000 voters who either had no party registration or were registered with the Republican Party switched their affiliation to the Democrats, potentially creating a new bloc of voters that candidates may seek to woo in races such as the crowded and competitive primary contest to replace term-limited Mayor Bill de Blasio.
According to data from the state voter file analyzed by Prime New York, a political consulting firm, 67,965 unaffiliated voters and 20,528 Republicans joined the Democratic Party, for a total of 88,493 new Democrats. In that same period, 20,136 Democrats switched over to the Republican Party.
Just 209 voters from the Republican and Democratic Parties gave up their party affiliation and became so-called “blank” or “independent” voters.
New York has a closed primary system, where only those with a party affiliation can vote in party primary elections. With 3.7 million registered Democrats in the city as of February 21, compared to just over 566,000 Republicans and about 1.08 million independents, the Democratic primaries all but decide the winner of the general election as well, at least for almost all citywide, boroughwide, and district-specific seats.
***
The Richest Politicians In Congress
Another financial question many voters want to know involves the 116th Congress. Who are the richest politicians in Washington? Are there more Democrats or Republicans who top that list? The answer may surprise you. In fact, the top 10 richest politicians are fairly evenly distributed across the aisle. Furthermore, nearly half the members of Congress are millionaires. Based on reported numbers from May 2019, the median net worth of Congress members is just over $1 million. Listed below are the 10 wealthiest members.
Senator Rick Scott R – Florida $259.7 million
Senator Mark Warner D – Virginia $214.1 million
Rep. Greg Gianforte R – Montana $189.3 million
Rep. Paul Mitchell R – Michigan $179.6 million
Senator Mitt Romney R – Utah $174.4 million
Rep. Vernon Buchanan R – Florida $157.1 million
Senator Mike Braun R – Indiana $136.8 million
Rep. Don Beyer D – Virginia $124.9 million
Rep. Dean Phillips D – Minnesota $123.8 million
Rep. Nancy Pelosi D – California $114.7 million
Past Jumps In Party Affiliations
The bump in Democratic affiliation following Biden’s inauguration mirrors that of former President Barack Obama’s first term, Jones said.
“That was really the high point that we’ve seen; kind of the 2006-2009 period, when really the majority of Americans either identified as Democrats outright or were independents but they leaned toward the party,” he said. “Our data on this only goes back to the ’90s, but it’s pretty much the only time we consistently had one party with the majority of Americans on their side.”
Republican advantages, though rarer and more short-lived, followed the Gulf War in 1991 – when George H.W. Bush was in office – and the 9/11 terrorist attacks during President George W. Bush’s term, according to Gallup. More people also reported GOP affiliation after the 1994, 2010 and 2014 midterm elections.
Whether the Republican Party can regain advantage during the 2022 midterm elections may rely on the successes of the Biden administration, according to Jones.
“A lot of it is going to depend on how things go over the course of the year. If things get better with the coronavirus and the economy bounces back and a lot of people expect Biden can keep relatively strong approval ratings, then that will be better for the Democrats,” Jones said. “But if things start to get worse – unemployment goes up or coronavirus gets worse – then his approval is going to go down. It’s going to make things a lot better for the Republican Party for the midterm next year.”

Polling Data Shows Republican Party Affiliation Is Down As Independents Leaning Toward The Democratic Party Surge

The GOP is losing its grip, according to the latest Gallup poll.
The number of Americans identifying as Republicans or as independents who lean toward the GOP dropped to 40% in the first quarter of 2021, compared with the number of Democrats or independents leaning toward the Democratic party hitting 49%. And that nine-percentage-point lead is the greatest Democratic advantage that Gallup has measured since the fourth quarter of 2012, when former President Barack Obama was re-elected.
Gallup routinely measures U.S. adults’ party identification and the political leanings of independents. The latest poll surveyed a random sample of 3,960 U.S. adults by phone between January and March of 2021. And while Democratic Party affiliation actually dropped by one point from the fourth quarter of 2020, to 30% — where it has hovered for most of the past eight years — the number of Americans identifying as independent rose to 44% from 38% last quarter. And this growing number of independents came at the expense of the Republican party, as 19% of independents said they lean Democrat, compared with 15% leaning Republican. Most of the remaining 11% of independents didn’t swing either way.
And several events have happened during those three months that could position the Democratic Party more favorably in voters’ eyes, the Gallup report noted.

The Message Hyperpolarization Doesn’t Work
There’s a message in the voter numbers. Republicans still lead the state, with nearly 35% of the vote. But independents aren’t far behind with more than 32% … and growing.
“What it shows is the hyperpolarization seen in politics between the two major parties has been pushing folks to the independent column,” pollster Mike Noble, of OH Predictive Insights, told me. “The only issue is, more are leaving the Republican Party than the Democratic Party and that’s because they have a brand issue.”
Noble chalks the declining Republican ranks up to their Looney Tunes audit.
“We know a majority of independent or moderate voters don’t believe the election was stolen,” he said. “Yet there is this audit going on that is not very transparent or professionally run. The GOP as a brand, I believe it is impacting them and the registration numbers reflect that.”
I hear from those voters all the time, principled Republicans who wonder when the party of conservative values became the cult of Trump.

Biggest Influencers: Democrats Or Republicans
To understand who influences politics, you can easily find out who the wealthy support. For example, the Walton family, the owners of the retail giant Walmart, has traditionally donated to Republican candidates. Alice Walton, the daughter of Walmart’s founder, hasn’t strayed from that too much. That is, until the 2008 election. In 2008 and 2016 the Walton family donated to Hilary Clinton’s campaign.
She isn’t the only person from a wealthy family to change tradition where politics are concerned either. Many of the younger individuals in America’s richest families have begun to sway from their family’s political associations as well. Below you’ll find the affiliation and overall net worth of the top 10 richest families in America.
There Are Fewer Registered Republicans Than Independents For The First Time Ever
There are now more registered independents than Republicans, marking a first for the U.S.
According to data from Ballot Access News, independents make up 29.09 percent of registered voters, while Republicans make up 28.87 percent and Democrats make up 39.66 percent. The data comes from the 31 states that require registration by party.
An analysis by The Washington Post, which first reported the data, notes that there hasn’t been a large drop in GOP registration since President TrumpDonald TrumpKamala Harris should offer Vietnam ‘market economy’ statusSupporters at Alabama rally boo Trump after he tells them to get vaccinatedCNN posthumously airs final interview with late Rep. Paul Mitchell was elected, meaning he’s likely not linked to the change. The growth of independents is more likely part of a broader trend since voter registration began in the 1900s.
In 2004, Democrats made up 42.19 percent of the vote, Republicans made up 32.79 percent of the vote and independents made up 23.15 percent of the vote. The number of independents has been growing since, while the number of Democrats and Republicans has slowly declined.
Democrats did see a boost in 2008 when former President Obama was elected, hitting a peak of 43.62 percent of registered voters. But by 2016, the percent of registered Democrats had declined to 40.6 percent.
What Republican And Democrats Believe
Let’s start with this example. There are one or more reasons why you chose that person to be your friend. It could be because of how he or she talks, sense of humor, intelligence, educational background, ideology, or other factors.
The bottom line is you made the individual your friend because of one or more factors you discovered in that person that pleases you. This explains why most people would prefer joining republicans than Democrats and vice versa.
Republicans and Democrats have diverse ideologies and beliefs. These beliefs or ideology is part of what draws people to join either political party.
Let’s start with Republicans. What do Republicans believe in?
Republicans boast libertarian and centrist factions. But they primarily believe in social conservative policies. They abide by laws that help conserve their traditional values. These include opposition to abortion, marijuana use, and same-sex marriage.
So the Republican Party’s platform is generally centered on American conservatism. It comprises establishment conservatives, Freedom Caucus, or Tea Party members, described as right-wing, populist, and far-right.
The Republican Party’s position has changed over time. They now transcend beyond traditional values, which often includes Christian background. The Republican’s evolved position now includes fiscal conservatism and foreign policy.
Here’s a quick summary of what the Republican Party believes in:
Here’s a quick look at what Democrats believe in:
Map 1 And Table 1: Party Registration Totals By State July 2018
Democrats no longer control the White House, the Senate, the House of Representatives, or for that matter most of the governorships or state legislatures. But they still maintain a toehold in the political process with their edge in the realm of voter registration. At least that is the case in the 31 states and the District of Columbia that register voters by political party. As of this month, 13 of these states boast a Democratic plurality in registered voters, compared to eight states where there is a Republican plurality. In the other 10 states, there are more registered independents than either Democrats or Republicans, with Democrats out-registering the Republicans in six of these states and the GOP with more voters than the Democrats in the other four. They are indicated in the chart as “I” or “I.” Nationally, four out of every 10 registered voters in party registration states are Democrats, with slightly less than three out of every 10 registered as Republicans or independents. Overall, the current Democratic advantage over Republicans in the party registration states approaches 12 million.
These Five Maps Show How California Is Divided Between Democrats And Republicans
Nami Sumida
California has over 22 million registered voters, an all-time record achieved ahead of the 2020 presidential election. The state’s number of registered voters now Florida’s entire population.
Of the 22 million, about 10 million are Democrat and 5 million are Republicans. The remaining 6.5 million are independents or registered to other parties, according to the most recent Report of Registration from the California Secretary of State released in February 2021.
The traditional political map of California below shows the party breakdown varies by county. Those in the Bay Area tend to have large shares of Democrats, while northern, eastern and some central counties lean more Republican.
California Secretary of State Report of Registration on Feb. 10, 2021
Lassen County is the reddest county, with 55% of its 16,000 registered voters identifying as Republican and 18% as Democratic. Neighboring Modoc County, with a little over 5,000 registered voters, was the second most Republican.
As for the bluest, it’s difficult to see in the map above, but it’s San Francisco. The county, which is also a city, has nine times as many registered Democrats as Republicans. But seeing San Francisco on a traditional map is difficult because of the county’s small land area.

For The First Time There Are Fewer Registered Republicans Than Independents
For the first time in history, there are more registered independents in the United States than there are registered Republicans.
It may not be for the reason you think, though.
New data from Ballot Access News, which tracks registrations in the 31 states that require voters to register by party, shows that independents account for 29.09 percent of voters in them, compared with 28.87 percent for Republicans. As recently as 2004, Republicans outpaced independents by nearly 10 percentage points.
There are still way more registered Democrats; 39.66 percent of voters are registered with that party.
This marks the first time since party registration began in the early 1900s that the number of registered independents in the United States has surpassed members of either major political party, according to Ballot Access News.
Here’s the data going back to 2004:
But before anybody chalks this up as having to do with the current occupant of the White House, it’s worth parsing the trends.
While independents have surpassed Republicans, there actually hasn’t been a huge drop in GOP party registration since President Trump took office. Since October 2016, GOP registration has dropped by half a percentage point. The number of registered Democrats declined by nearly a full point over the same span. Independents have benefited from both drops.
Can An Unregistered Voter Vote For Republicans Or Democrats During General Elections
Voting in a general election is the right of every citizen eighteen years of age or older. And yes, you don’t have to be a registered member of either the Democratic or Republican Party to vote for a candidate during a federal, state, or local election.
However, your state may give you the privilege to state the political party you belong to on the voter registration card. But you’re free to cast your vote for any candidate you prefer.
So, it also doesn’t matter if you voted for Republicans in the previous election. You can switch sides and vote for Democrats in the upcoming election.
Gop Registration Drop After Capitol Attack Is Part Of Larger Trend
WASHINGTON — In the weeks since the January riot at the Capitol, there has been a raft of stories about voters across the country leaving the Republican Party. Some of the numbers are eye-catching and suggest that the GOP may be shrinking before our eyes, but a closer look at the numbers over time shows that a larger change has been working its way through the party for some time.
In fact, when one takes into account shifts in the composition of the Democratic Party, the real story seems to be more about a deeper remaking of the nation’s two major political parties.
To be sure, the headlines from the last few weeks have been striking, with multiple states reporting large declines in Republican voter registrations.
In Pennsylvania, more than 12,000 Republicans dropped the “R” from their registrations in January. In North Carolina, the figure was close to 8,000. In Arizona the figure was about 9,200 through late-January. And in one county in California, San Diego, more than 4,700 Republicans left the party last month.
Those are sizable changes and they are much larger than the moves away from the Democrats in those places, but they come with some caveats. There are always some losses and gains in registrations for the Democrats and Republicans. Partisan identity can be fluid for a large chunk of the voters, and remember: just because a voter is registered with one party doesn’t mean he or she always votes for its candidates.
Cook Partisan Voting Index
Another metric measuring party preference is the Cook Partisan Voting Index . Cook PVIs are calculated by comparing a state’s average Democratic Party or Republican Party share of the two-party presidential vote in the past two presidential elections to the nation’s average share of the same. PVIs for the states over time can be used to show the trends of U.S. states towards, or away from, one party or the other.
Nationwide Voter Registration Data By Party
In the 32 jurisdictions that have registration by party, here are the number of registered voters in each party and the number of independents:
Democratic: 47,106,084Reform: 9,004oth parties 1,814,973
This data uses the most available figures for each jurisdiction. All are as of September or October 2020, except that New York has no data newer than February 2020, and Massachusetts is August 2020.
In February 2020 the numbers were:
Democratic: 45,715,952Reform: 6,665oth parties 1,712,747
The February 2020 tally is the only one in U.S. history in which the number of voters registered independent and miscellaneous was greater than the number in either major party. But between February and now, Republicans regained their second-place position.
The print issue of Ballot Access News for November 1, 2020, has this information by state. All the numbers in that edition are correct for the state-by-state figures and for the national totals for the Democratic, Republican, Libertarian Parties, and the number of independents. Unfortunately the totals for the other parties, as printed, are not, and the national percentages as printed are not. I forgot to update some of the national totals when I was working with the template of the February 2020 data. A correction will be made in the December 1 issue.
Will More Republicans Die From Covid Than Democrats
| 509 opinions shared on Society & Politics topic.Influencer2 mo People lie, right and left. You’re looking not at a number comparing those immunized or not immunized against voter rolls, but asking two questions at random, what party do you affiliate with, and do you plan to get vaccinated.Either way, it’s a brain dead question. More people would die regardless. Let’s say that 45% between both parties is only 30% of Americans , that’s enough to fall short of the unknown number that we would need to reach for herd immunity, which to the best of my knowledge no country has reached yet to find that sweet spot.It will simply mutate more and more and recircle the globe again and again. Which honestly is fine by me. The panic and blow to the economy were worse than the virus. Maybe sars-cov-3 will be more exciting though. I was in panic mode until there were more concrete numbers a few months in with cov-2.You also have to figure that if a virus becomes too deadly it wipes itself out as the hosts for that virus die faster than they can transmit it, like ebola, some strains of flu or dysentery. I’m not too concerned as me and my family caught it already, and kind of figured on this sticking around like the flu. 0|0

Why Rebirth’s Stephanie Brown isn’t the Same as Preboot Stephanie Brown
Hi I’ve got opinions about how the reboot has been handling my girl.
I’ve been enjoying Detective Comics for the most part, but I’ve been frustrated with Stephanie Brown’s role in them for a while. And I think I’ve finally put my finger on it.
Special thanks to @renaroo for all her help finding panels and issue numbers!
Below the cut is 2k of screaming and panels.
Stephanie Brown in the preboot era was a kid with a bad past. Her mom was a drug addict, her dad was abusive and a villain. She lived in poverty for at least chunks of her original run as Spoiler. She dated older guys, one of whom got her pregnant and ran away, and has been implied to be a sexual abuse survivor.
And as Spoiler, her life wasn’t necessarily better. She dated Tim, and they had a pretty decent relationship, but Tim didn’t tell her his secret identity, on orders from Batman. For reasons. (Bruce later told her his identity without Tim’s permission, which… doesn’t really make things better.) From day one, she was an outcast from the family; she regularly got locked out of the Batcave, wasn’t informed about major developments in the family, and Bruce denies her training and resources. She even suspects that this is because of her family life.
(Robin (1993-2009) #100.)
@renaroo and I have talked about this, and a part of Bruce’s reaction to Steph during this time period was clearly based off Bruce’s recent trauma because of Jason’s death. Steph, Cass, and Tim’s relationships with Bruce in the preboot were all tied to that event. Tim stepped up as Robin, providing Bruce with the balance and support that he knew he needed, so Bruce couldn’t really send Tim away. Cass had no secret identity, no life to return to. Bruce looked at her and saw his own morals concentrated, a dedication to the cause that he thought makes Cass an ideal protégé and possible successor down the line. (Not that it ever happened of course because of course it didn’t.) Besides that, Cass was a better fighter than he was, and had been looking after herself for years. Firing her wasn’t very effective, although he certainly tried in the later parts of Cass’s initial Batgirl run.
But Steph?
Steph was none of those things. Bruce didn’t need her, she wasn’t trained and capable like Cass. Instead, everything that Bruce saw when he looked at her probably remindd him of Jason. A mother lost to drug abuse, a father entrenched in crime and violence, a kid from the less great parts of the city. The parallels were right there to Bruce. But Bruce was too late to save Steph from this life, unlike Jason. Instead, Steph had decided to save herself. But he looked at her, and he saw a kid with no training and no experience. And he’d just lost a partner from a background very similar to hers.
He told her to go home. He never really stopped, not until she became Batgirl. (Although they had some amazing bonding moments as well, which I’ll probably make another post about later)
As a result Steph was an outcast for the majority of her run as Spoiler. She got brief flashes of integration and family; she teams up with Cass, works with other heroes like Black Canary, Huntress, and Oracle. She worked with Tim and Bruce as well. But just as often, Bruce did things like forbid Cass to patrol with Steph and the aforementioned locking her out of the Batcave and not telling her that the family was undergoing a MAJOR crisis at the time.)
(Batman: Bruce Wayne: Murderer? Robin (1993-2009) #98 - Yes Bruce was in prison at the time, but you’d have thought that SOMEONE would have thought to tell her he was unavailable.)
The end result of this should happen when she becomes Robin. Steph becoming Robin should have been cathartic; a culmination of Steph’s hard work paying off and Bruce recognizing her place in the family. And it was for a while!!
(Detective Comics (1937-2011) #796. Making me nostalgic for what could have been. Steph with anger issues and a complicated but growing relationship with Bruce? Amazing.)
Instead, it was a cheap stunt by DC. Steph got fired, Steph screwed up by starting a gang war, Steph died. (And then came back in an outrageously OOC manner, but that’s another story.)
We got some of the catharsis of her becoming part of the family in Steph’s run as Batgirl, but it was undermined by a lot of things. To make her Batgirl, Miller began what Tynion and the Nu52 (and later Rebirth) continues to do.
They take away what makes Steph interesting.
Steph’s anger issues were integral to her early character. She canonically went to visit her father in prison to fight him. Her anger was not once touched upon in Miller’s Batgirl. Her status as a teenage mom was similarly erased. Her trauma at the hands of Black Mask was only hinted at once, after Steph was shot in the head, when she saw him in a flashback.
(Batgirl (2009-2011) #6. Don’t worry, this will never come up again.)
And her friendship with Cass, a relationship I would say was defining and important to Steph, was washed away, with Cass not even appearing in Steph’s history of the Bat Family. Steph still had to fight for her acceptance in the family; Babs didn’t want her to be Batgirl, her first ever meeting with Dick Grayson and Damian Wayne was a disaster, and she struggled to find her place. There was still catharsis there; she built a team and support network for herself, and it was wonderful, despite my issues with that run.
Miller also started moving Steph away from her roots with her mom; Crystal in Miller’s run was clean and she and Steph seem to have achieved financial stability. But in the preboot, both of those worked, since we’d seen how far they’ve come. Arthur’s abuse wasn’t directly stated, but his attack on her specifically through Black Mercy mad it pretty clear that there were still elements of abuse present, even if the events Steph had referred to in previous stories weren’t shown.
But Tynion doesn’t have that history to build off, because the Nu52 annihilated Steph’s entire history.
Steph in Batman Eternal is from a perfectly happy middle class background, with her parents already split up and with joint custody. Her dad isn’t abusive (in fact, him being a supervillain appears to be a complete surprise to her), her mom isn’t an addict. She’s never been a teenage mom, and although she starts a relationship with Tim off page, she knows his secret identity from the beginning.
(Batman Eternal #3)
And Bruce accepts her into the fold right away in Detective Comics. As a fan of Steph, the catharsis is there on a meta level; Stephanie Brown is accepted enough by the company to allow her to be in the comic which they named themselves after! What a change from the days when Steph was brutally killed off and then banned from appearing in any medium! But in universe? That catharsis doesn’t exist.
So suddenly, Tynion is faced with a character with many of Steph’s traits; the name, the upbeat attitude, the costume, with none of her history or markings.
(Sidenote: Steph’s anger isn’t completely non-existant in the Nu52/Rebirth era: Selina notes that Steph is angry during Steph’s appearance in Catwoman #42.)
(Catwoman (2011-2016) #42. Thank you for this moment, it’s a balm to my soul.)
Steph’s inclusion by Bruce in this initial team he sets up is a fascinating choice. He’s integrating her into the family from the very beginning of her character arc. This could have been a chance to let Steph grow in new directions; she could have grown closer to Cass and Harper, have Bruce and Kate as mentor figures, and explored her relationship with Tim in new and exciting ways. She could have met Duke and Jason and bonded with them over their similarities.
But instead, Steph and Cass barely interact, Harper’s relegated to cameos and sage advice, and Steph’s character is instead defined solely by her relationship with Tim. She has a few nice moments with Bruce, like the hug I’ve been waiting for ever since I got into comics.
(Detective Comics (2016-) #940. THAT HUG)
But overwhelmingly I’ve been left wanting more, and not in the good way. It’s not satisfying. Steph has some great moments in ‘Tec and even some great lines, just like during her run as Batgirl. But there’s a kind of hollowness there for me, lacking the heart and soul of Stephanie Brown.
Tynion also makes some strange changes with Steph; she loses her snark and attitude that even Miller managed to maintain.
(Robin (1993-2009) #56. Just hanging around, you know.)
(Detective Comics (1937-2011) #796. Poor Bruce has to hang around with snarky teens.)
She’s lacking her relationship with gravity.
(Batgirl (2000-2006) #20.)
She also no longer loves being a hero and doing good, instead having her arc being dedicated to… saying that superheroes shouldn’t exist… while still functioning as a vigilante… (I really don’t like this kind of arc in comics, not going to lie, so I’m predisposed to not be happy here. But I still think this is a RADICAL departure from Steph’s prior characterization.)
(Robin (1993-2009) #100. Here we see Tim planning on retiring, and knowing that Steph is hardly about to stop being a hero.)
It all culminates, of course, in Steph’s departure from the team after Tim’s death. She calls out Batman for his actions, raises some valid points about how he’s not really parenting Cass (which… Tynion continues to ignore, because what, letting Bruce adopt Cass and teaching her to read? Nah, she’s too busy learning Shakespeare and hanging out with Clayface.) And after that moment of awesome she… leaves.
(Detective Comics (2016-) #947)
She becomes the outcast again. But this time it’s her fault.
And it’s so frustrating to me, this idea that Steph’s isolation is her own fault in Rebirth. That Bruce offered Steph a place and a team, but that she rejected it, is so aggravating. Steph’s isolation is supposed to be Bruce Wayne’s mistake which she pays for throughout her superhero career. Steph wants this place with the family, fights for it tooth and nail in the preboot. Now, if Steph had gone through the preboot arc, fighting for this, trying to earn it, and then turning away from it out of frustration with Bruce? I’d have been willing to listen, and might have even been excited for it.
(Detective Comics (2016-) #957. This is just such a departure from preboot Steph that it boggles my mind.)
But this is a Stephanie Brown who has not been a hero for long. This is Stephanie Brown, who is about the age preboot Steph was when she became Robin, new and inexperienced (meanwhile Tim is exactly where he was in his own timeline when Steph was Batgirl, a frustrating process that’s also familiar.) Steph is younger than she was in preboot and less competent. So are Barbara Gordon and Cass. The Batboys have gotten to grow up and improve. The Batgirls were forced backwards in both age and ability, and yet were older when they started their superhero careers, making them inherently less experienced then their male counterparts.
Part of it is, of course, DC’s refusal to let the Batgirls move forward in the status quo. Babs can’t become Oracle again, Cass can’t become Batgirl, and Steph can’t be Robin or Batgirl. The Batgirls (and Harper) are all now around the same age, and their relationships have been completely and utterly decimated by the retcons and reboots. Steph and Cass aren’t best friends, Babs isn’t a mentor to either Steph or Cass. Steph’s relationship with Bruce is no longer the complicated beast that it was pre-Flashpoint, she still hasn’t met Damian and established their bond, and her first interaction with Dick was an aggravatingly airheaded “kiss me sexy Batman”.

(Batman and Robin Eternal #2. Just. Why.)
And her relationship with Tim is lacking some of the most interesting elements; the drama of Steph’s history and Bruce’s disapproval. But despite its blandness, it continues to be the front and center of Steph’s arc. It’s what drives her away from the others and causes her to isolate herself. Steph functions as a manic-pixie figure to Tim, encouraging him to live his dream, while still being the goofy and funny partner he needs, with her primary motivation being his death.
Her goofiness and mourning are both clearly about to pay off in a manner which I am terrified about. In Detective Comics, Anarchy clones Steph’s phone. A phone which, it was shown in the previous issue, to contain information which could compromise Tim (and by extension everyone’s secret identities).
(Detective Comics (2016-) #963. Oh look and Tim even told her it would be a bad idea! Haha, how funny!)
(Detective Comics (2016-) #964)
We could be about to witness War Games, reboot version.
But this time, there will be no one to blame but Stephanie Brown. She chose to isolate herself, she was sloppy with her phone’s security, and she was fooled by Anarchy.
If Tynion does what I’m scared he’s going to do, we’re looking at some next level bullshit.
I live in fear.

Pretend I’m the owner of a polling company that surveys political races. I prominently advertise my results: According to a Walt Hickey Polling Inc. survey of 600 likely voters, John Doe is beating Jane Doe 58 percent to 40 percent — John Doe will likely win the election. (Let’s say it’s a race for the U.S. Senate.)
But then you keep reading and you notice that the sample on which my poll is based consists of 400 men and 200 women. You can’t really tell whether I’m adjusting the numbers, and if so, how. Would you trust that number? Unless there’s some state I don’t know about where men outnumber women 2-to-1, you shouldn’t.
So why aren’t we more skeptical of movie ratings that do the same thing?
It’s a worthwhile question, and lately it’s made it pretty hard for us to take the ratings provided on IMDb, the largest and most popular movie site on the internet, at face value. The Academy Awards rightly get criticized for reflecting the preferences of a small, unrepresentative sample of the population, but online ratings have the same problem. Even the vaunted IMDb Top 250 — nominally the best-liked films ever — is worth taking with 250 grains of salt. Women accounted for 52 percent of moviegoers in the U.S. and Canada in 2016, according to the most recent annual study by the Motion Picture Association of America. But on the internet, and on ratings sites, they’re a much smaller percentage.
“If you see any number that is a rating number or a number with a percentage sign, it may be compelling or meaningful and it may not be,” said Gary Langer, the president of Langer Research Associates, the polling firm that has long conducted surveys for ABC News. “And what we need to do rather than be seduced by the number is to subject it to meaningful inquiry as to how it was obtained.”
OK, but how skeptical should we be? To figure that out, I wanted to see how strong the male skew of raters is on IMDb and how big an effect that skew has on movies’ scores.
We’ll start with every film that’s eligible for IMDb’s Top 250 list. A film needs 25,000 ratings from regular IMDb voters to qualify for the list. As of Feb. 14, that was 4,377 titles. Of those movies, only 97 had more ratings from women than men. The other 4,280 films were mostly rated by men, and it wasn’t even close for all but a few films. In 3,942 cases (90 percent of all eligible films), the men outnumbered the women by at least 2-to-1. In 2,212 cases (51 percent), men outnumbered women more than 5-to-1. And in 513 cases (12 percent), the men outnumbered the women by at least 10-to-1.
Looking strictly at IMDb’s weighted average — IMDb adjusts the raw ratings it gets “in order to eliminate and reduce attempts at vote stuffing,” but it does not disclose how — the male skew of raters has a pretty significant effect. In 17 percent of cases, the weighted average of the male and female voters was equal, and in another 26 percent of cases, the votes of the men and women were within 0.1 points of one another. But when there was bigger disagreement — i.e. men and women rated a movie differently by 0.2 points or more, on average — the overall score overwhelmingly broke closer to the men’s rating than the women’s rating. The score was closer to the men’s rating more than 48 percent of the time and closer to the women’s rating less than 9 percent of the time, meaning that when there was disagreement, the male preference won out about 85 percent of the time.
That male skew of raters is also apparent in the 250 movies that make IMDb’s top list, which we pulled on Feb. 16:
So, what’s the issue here? If IMDb is content with its ratings being intended almost solely for men, then there isn’t one. (We reached out to IMDb for comment and for more information on how the site adjusts its ratings, but we received no response. So we don’t know, for example, if IMDb is already doing something to the data that accounts for the gender disparity in raters.) But if IMDb seeks to reflect the opinions of the actual movie-going population, the situation is grave.
Can we fix that? Langer is skeptical. Mainly, besides how simple it is for a dedicated individual or group to “manufacture” results, online data from a self-selected group of people is so inherently dubious that any reweighting of that data is also inherently dubious. You can’t just adjust troublesome data to make it reflect the world, he said.
“The notion that you can take bad data and weight it to be OK is … hazardous to your health,” Langer cautioned.
That said, since the scores of the most popular movie site on the internet are already being calculated based on an entirely self-selected sample, would it destroy the IMDb Top 250 to try to mimic actual movie audiences more? I don’t really think so. As a thought experiment, I used everything we know about IMDb’s rating adjustments — which is far from the full picture — and ran them on the ratings of the 4,377 eligible films after I adjusted the raw ratings to weight men’s and women’s views equally.
We can’t do an adjustment that allows us to perfectly replicate the top 250 — again, we don’t know what’s in the black box, so we can’t re-create it — but to approximate it, I excluded any film that didn’t either a) make the IMDb top 1,000 movies list or b) have a rating from the site’s top 1,000 users within 0.87 points1 of the rating from its users overall. This allows us to sidestep films that would have made the top 250 through vote-stuffing.
My main point is that overall, the naive reweighting didn’t destroy the general look of the 250, and if anything, it elevated films that may have been overlooked because one gender is vastly outnumbered.2
What if IMDb adjusted ratings toward gender parity?

IMDb makes adjustments to its raw ratings but does not disclose its methodology. Therefore, these rankings — which start with the raw ratings — may not match a gender-weighted version of a list made by IMDb itself because we can’t re-create the site’s adjustments.
Source: IMDb
The top 100 largely includes films from the original list of 250, and the additions to the list — there are a lot of best picture winners among the newbies — appear mainly in the back half of the 250.
Attempting to reflect a target population is a common practice in many fields that use surveys. It’s not clear to me why movie rating sites don’t do it — or, at the least, why they don’t indicate that their scores are almost all based mostly on the opinions of male users.

MEXICO CITY– I’m struggling to watch Aïda Ruilova’s 2009 video “Meet the Eye,” in which the actress Karen Black alternately attempts to seduce and crazily berate Raymond Pettibon between rapid edits. She’s wearing babydoll-style makeup, which gives her a subtly Whatever Happened to Baby Jane? vibe, and I’m hooked to the melodrama. But I have no idea what the argument is about, because I can barely hear the audio track over the sound of gunshots, a faint electroclash song playing somewhere, countless indistinguishable noises, and the invitation “Let’s go for it!” being repeated in a grating child’s voice.
The gallery is an ADHD nightmare. It contains not one, but two talking Mike Kelley works and several videos by other artists. In one, the Spanish performance artist Itziar Okariz is pissing on a parked car in the middle of New York City. On the other (source of the electroclash track) I catch a glimpse of what appears to be a dead-eyed princess dripping with cum.
By the time I turn back to Ruilova’s piece the loop has ended. My questions are unanswered. The curatorial strategy here leaves me with so many more.
From Raisa Maudit’s 2012 “FART: Global Art Fair”
Punk. Sus rastros en el arte contemporáneo, now on view at Museo Universitario Del Chopo, is sort of a mess. That’s not to say the work here isn’t good—it’s great—but the show is an overwhelming, over-stimulating experience that’s often draining when it should be wholly inspiring. I can’t think of another exhibition I’ve been to in which I’ve loved nearly every artwork yet couldn’t wait to get the hell out of each gallery. Maybe that abrasiveness is deliberate? The experience did, after all, remind me of trying to have one-on-one conversations with dear friends while a noise musician performs on the other side of a party in a squat. If the past 35 years have rendered audiences numb to “shocking” artworks, perhaps subverting museum-caliber curatorial conventions is the last punk gesture.
That’s a thought I might not have had, were it not for the fact that (I think) I entered the exhibition backwards. The galleries are stacked in a concrete box addition inside the museum—an airy 1902 glass pavilion that, appropriately, was home to Mexico’s famous punk market “El Chopo” until the late 80s. I started from the top floor, the library, where punk memorabilia is arranged in vitrines, more or less chronologically alongside didactic text. This part of the exhibition, at least for me, was surprisingly enjoyable. The text places punk in an art historical context, citing Dada, the Situationists, John Waters’ films, and Warhol’s factory as conceptual forefathers. Alongside the familiar narratives of the CBGBs scene and parallels in London, the curators discuss Spain’s Movida Madrileña—one of my favorite, under-historicized moments in subculture—the Spanish-speaking world’s more recent equivalent of the experimental Weimar Republic years. I got an undeniable thrill from seeing a video of all-female Basque punk band Las Vulpess’ cover of “Now I Wanna Be Your Dog” enshrined in a museum (in Spanish, the song translates to “I like being a slut”, and its broadcast on television sparked a debate about censorship, gender, and “decency” in Spain’s relatively new socialist democracy). From photos of drag icon Divine to punk band Eskorbuto, never had I felt more cool nerding out in a museum. Importantly, the show ties the influence of both European and anglophone punk to Mexican subculture in the 80s and 90s. That’s a topic I’m glad the show gave me an introduction to. (Indeed, I’d like to revisit Sarah Minter’s hour-long video “Alma Punk” from 1992 in a less overwhelming context. It’s a candid DIY document of Mexico’s punk scene from that era.)
Enrique Ježik, “La fiesta de las balas,” (The Bullet Party) 2011.
If the academic and “precious” vitrines of punk history and artifacts were unexpected, the gallery beneath it seemed like a contemporary assault on the culture of display—quite literally. The aforementioned gunshot sounds are from an Enrique Ježik sculpture, “La fiesta de las balas,” 2011. The piece comprises three bulletproof glass display cases, evocative of Damien Hirst works, riddled with craters from bullets. They’re installed in their own room, like a shooting range, but the sound from the shooting recording reverberates through half the museum. The piece stuck with me beyond my initial reaction (a teen boy destruction fantasy) as a commentary on both the cult of art object worship, and the futility of resisting it. Like Warhol’s “Shot Marilyns”, the piece’s value lies in it doubling as a record of the violence committed against it.
But “La Fiesta de las balas” also points to two of the exhibition’s most glaring problems: it’s one of the few works here that actually should be experienced as a physical object, and it’s loud as hell. There are only a few other sculptural works in the show, and at least half of them involve an audio or video component that’s competing with other sounds in an echoey gallery.
Still from Brice Dellsperger’s “Body Double 16“
And sound is a big, big problem for a show that’s overwhelmingly based on video. Don’t get me wrong: nearly every video here is fantastic. I spent untold hours diligently viewing relatively short works such as Raisa Maudit’s 2012 “FART: Global Art Fair” (in which the artist parodies the gallery/artist relationship in a tiara and semen during a fake interview with herself) or Ant Farm’s 1975 “The Eternal Frame,” in which the artists reenact the assassination of JFK, complete with drag Jackie O. But in such a busy exhibition, to expect visitors to sit through Dan Graham’s hour-long “Rock my Religion” is asking a bit much. If you’re curating a program with more time-based-media than a museum has hours, perhaps a gallery exhibition isn’t the way to go. I couldn’t shake the impression that Punk would’ve made a fantastic screening series and publication, with perhaps a much leaner gallery install where noise-emitting sculptures had more space to breathe. It felt like a missed opportunity for content with so much potential for event-based programming and critical writing—especially considering the museum has its own movie theater.
It’s frustrating to view video works when they’re all looping at different rates in a gallery context. There’s a rich history of subversive cinema as a collective viewing experience, and so many of these works would be better on the big screen. I am thinking especially of Brice Dellsperger’s “Body Double 16.” It’s short, but screams for cinematic treatment. In the piece, Dellsperger assumes a variety of characters in drag, committing various acts of violence against the other characters he’s also playing. The artist recreates scenes from A Clockwork Orange and Ken Russell’s Women In Love with surprisingly beautiful cinematography that makes the punk/masochistic content so much stranger.
Pepo Salazar, “Yoga Alliance,” 2015.
It’s one of many highlights lining the ramp gallery (which is either the entrance or exit, depending on the route one takes). There’s really too much excellent work here to talk about it all—but I’d be remiss for neglecting Pepo Salazar’s assemblage “Yoga Alliance,” which is arguably one of my favorite artworks of the past few years. It comprises a digital print of bald Britney Spears, from her very public meltdown a decade ago, and a black wig hanging from the piece. It has a very “Punk’s not dead” (rather lurking in unexpected places) vibe, and the physical wig almost reads like an invitation to the viewer to join in the rebellion.
Install view with Die Tödliche Doris, “Das Leben des Sid Vicious,” 1981 (L); Christian Marclay, “Record Players,” 1983-84; and Guillermo Santamarina, “Frei vom jedem Schaden!” installation of albums thrown like a discus at the wall in the background.
Descending the ramp, through more video projections, the last piece I encountered (or the first for viewers who start from the bottom up) was Catalan artist Jordi Colomer’s “No Future.” The video follows an old car mounted with an electric sign bearing the titular text as it drives across European cities. The piece is from 2006, and as the “NO? FUTURE!” message crossed a likely expensive, Calatrava-looking bridge, it felt eerily prescient. Filmed just before the global recession and the political turmoil that ensued, Colomer seemed to know that punk would suddenly become relevant anew. If The Decline of Western Civilization is accelerating, at least somebody is still having a little fun while we’re along for the ride.

Almost There: Binyamin Satan-Yahu’s Opponents Reach a Deal to Replace Him (The War Criminal, Terrorist Satan-Yahu)
But the War Criminal Prime Minister Satan-Yahu won’t give up without a fight
— June 3, 2021

Naftali bennett, the tech millionaire turned politician who is poised to become Israel’s next prime minister, began his political career in 2006 as chief of staff to Binyamin Netanyahu, then the leader of the opposition. Mr Bennett (pictured) admired Mr Netanyahu for years and played a key role in his return to power in 2009. Mr Bennett’s memoir begins with a note of gratitude to his former boss, and ends with an adulatory chapter entitled “What I learned from Binyamin Netanyahu”.
How times have changed. Mr Bennett’s Yamina party is now part of a coalition that is on the verge of ending Mr Netanyahu’s 12-year reign as prime minister. The coalition deal, featuring eight parties holding 61 seats (see chart), was finalised just before a midnight deadline on June 2nd. But the potential new government still must win a confidence vote in the 120-seat Knesset (Israel’s parliament) in the coming days. Mr Netanyahu will undoubtedly do everything in his power to prevent that from happening.
It is no wonder that the negotiations came down to the wire. Israel is used to governments made up of disparate parties, but this one would be the most diverse in history. On the right are Mr Bennett’s Yamina, along with two other nationalist parties (Yisrael Beiteinu and New Hope) which are also led by former aides to Mr Netanyahu (Avigdor Lieberman and Gideon Sa’ar). In the centre is the coalition’s largest party, Yesh Atid, led by Yair Lapid, a secularist. He is the architect of the new government. Under the deal, he would take over from Mr Bennett as prime minister if the government lasts more than two years.
There are other centrist and left-wing parties in the coalition, but what makes it historic is the inclusion of Ra’am, which has four seats. It would become the first truly independent Arab party to join a government since Israel’s founding in 1948. For decades the Arab parties have been shunned and, in turn, have shown little interest in joining a coalition. Ra’am will not hold any cabinet seats. But its leader, Mansour Abbas, used the party’s leverage as a potential kingmaker to obtain greater resources for Israel’s Arab minority.
It took the parties opposed to Mr Netanyahu time to get their act together. In three of the four elections since 2019 they won a majority of seats, but they failed to join up before now. Weeks of nerve-racking negotiations over who would get which cabinet posts preceded the current agreement. At one point Mr Bennett abandoned the talks, reportedly citing the conflict in Gaza and Arab-Jewish clashes on the streets of Israeli cities last month. But his negotiations with the prime minister bore no fruit. “The elections have proven there is no right-wing government under Netanyahu,” said Mr Bennett on May 30th. “There’s unity or fifth elections.”
In order to lead the new government effectively Mr Bennett will have to suppress some of his more right-wing views. In the past he has opposed the creation of a Palestinian state and favoured annexing much of the occupied West Bank. He is an ardent supporter of settlers, once leading the council representing them (though he is not a settler himself). Some regard him as more right-wing than Mr Netanyahu, though not nearly as ruthless. He is also an observant Jew: if sworn in, he would be the first prime minister to wear a yarmulke, or Jewish skullcap, for everyday affairs.
But Mr Bennett notes that he is not the only coalition member with what some consider extreme views. “For the new government to succeed, all the partners will need to exercise restraint,” he has said. “No one will be asked to give up on their ideology, but everyone will have to postpone the realisation of some of their dreams. We will focus on what can be done, instead of arguing over what is impossible.”
Perhaps the coalition can take some inspiration from the Knesset’s election of a new president of Israel on June 2nd. Lawmakers voted overwhelmingly for Isaac Herzog, a former leader of the Labour party and government minister. The president’s role is mostly symbolic. Still, it was a rare display of consensus for the divided body.
War Criminal Bibi’s Last Stand
Mustering a majority is a big achievement for the opposition. But it is not over the finish line yet. The parties reportedly discussed a range of issues during their negotiations, from committee posts to legalising cannabis. Some reports suggested that there were still details to be hashed out. Then there is the confidence vote, which could take place as early as June 7th—or the speaker of the Knesset, a Netanyahu loyalist, could try to delay it by an extra week.
In that time Mr Netanyahu will try to pick off wavering members of the coalition in order to deny it a majority. They are already coming under pressure. Members of Mr Bennett’s party have been called “traitors” by the prime minister’s allies. Protests have been held outside their homes. Senior rabbis have phoned them to warn of the spiritual dangers that the new government poses to the Jewish people.
Mr Netanyahu is also doing his part. In a televised tantrum on May 30th, he accused Mr Bennett of carrying out “the fraud of the century” and compared the new coalition to Bashar Assad’s regime in Syria and to the rulers of Iran. “Don't form a left-wing government—such a government is a danger to Israel's security and future,” said Mr Netanyahu.
Such intimidation has worked in the past, and one member of Mr Bennett’s party has already defected to the prime minister’s side. But Mr Netanyahu’s act is getting old. Mr Bennett has accused him of “trying to take the entire state of Israel with him to his personal Masada”—a reference to the hilltop fortress where Jewish rebels committed mass suicide 1,900 years ago, rather than be captured by Roman soldiers. He and others on the right turned on Mr Netanyahu not because they disagree with his hardline policies, but, as Mr Bennett explained, “because no one believed [his] promises would be kept.”

Opinion:

I’m about midway by way of Zucked: Waking Up to the Fb Catastrophe by Roger McNamee. It’s going sluggish as a result of what I am learning makes me so indignant, sad or alarmed about my #1 vacation spot on the Net. Almost every web page causes me to stop and assume not nearly Fb’s betrayal of so many billion trusting customers, but in addition that this guide confirms a rising concern I have concerning the deteriorating relationship between individuals and know-how generally and my frustration that both self-regulation by tech corporations and the power of our authorities to protect us in conditions akin to this have been thus far just plain impotent.
I am those who initially came to Fb to share thoughts, concepts and footage with associates. It grew to be a supply of perception and knowledge for my most up-to-date five books and it was an ample supply of latest enterprise leads. For over ten years, Fb has offered me with ample returns on my vital investments of time.
Less so now.
Zucked is just not the primary e-book that warned towards Fb, but it’s made extra highly effective and credible because the source is Roger McNamee, who I contemplate to be among the most credible voices in know-how.
I’ve recognized Roger since we have been both just starting careers associated to the enterprise of know-how. We have been never shut, but we did share a ardour back within the early 80s for the promise of private know-how, greatest described by the late Steve Jobs as a “bicycle for the mind,” talked about on this e-book. I’ve lengthy adopted his thought management in areas to know-how as a primal transformative pressure.
Stone Wall Forward
Zucked is giving me this very disturbing picture that billions of individuals are driving their mental bicycles at breathtaking velocity down a particularly long and darkening tunnel on the finish of which is a stone wall.
Most of us really feel this sense of tunnel. We experience along surrounded by individuals who see what we see, assume what we expect, oppose those who are totally different from us and hold peddling alongside despite mounting proof that the journey might finish badly.
We humans have grow to be a divided lot. Civility between us has deteriorated as has trust: We’re more and more disinclined to seek out widespread ground with one another and we debate political and social issues with stridency and mistrust: We really feel that righteousness is on our aspect and this who disagree are evil, deranged, dangerous or all three.
Roger McNamee believes the wrongdoer that has achieved probably the most to distort our perceptions is Facebook, and in the half of the ebook that I have accomplished, he makes an overwhelmingly compelling case.
Manipulating Minds
Fb, as chances are you’ll know, is the most important company in historical past. More than 2.2 billion individuals log in no less than as soon as month-to-month. That’s about one in three individuals on Earth if you get rid of these with out digital entry or youngsters underneath age five or seniors who’ve lost the power or want to make use of computer systems.
However wait. Sadly, there’s extra.
Fb additionally owns Instagram, which has 1.5 billion customers and WhatsApp with a few billion extra. In fact, there’s overlap, but a conservative estimate of these three social networks provides us a minimum of three billion distinctive users, most of whom go to more than as soon as every day; some of us much more.
Fb and its two largest subsidiaries are manipulating the hearts and minds of half the world’s individuals, extra by orders of magnitude, than any company in history, greater than twice the variety of individuals controlled by the Chinese language authorities as we speak; more than the variety of individuals suppressed by Germany, Japan and Russia throughout World Warfare 2.
In accordance with McNamee, the empire is beneath the management of just two individuals Sheryl Sandberg and Mark Zuckerberg.
The Virtuous We
McNamee served as Zuckerberg’s mentor from 2006-to-2009, starting shortly after young Zuck dropped out of Harvard the place Facebook started by facilitating the power to seek out dates for frat boys at elite universities. It turned much more than that extremely shortly when Zuck and Silicon Valley found each other.
McNamee says he has written this broadside to sound the alarm, to warn us that Facebook has created the type of Filter Bubble that Eli Pariser wrote about a number of years again. This bubble filters what we see in order that we like virtually all of it. We speak virtually unique with individuals who share our views. This establishes the concept that each of us is a part of a virtuous we (my words). This is completed in fact by rigorously calibrated algorithms. This social insulation is dangerous sufficient, however it worsens by orders of magnitude when algorithms pit the virtuous we towards the evil them: individuals simply assume in another way about political and social points.
The tools that Fb makes use of usually are not inherently evil: no tools are. You should use a hammer to build a home or bludgeon a spouse. It’s as much as the consumer, and Fb has lengthy defended itself for not being liable for the hate, bullying, swindling and despicable conduct most individuals have witnessed on Fb.
McNamee points to the work of a well-intentioned individual, who I consulted a few years in the past. Stanford Professor BJ Fogg, who fathered the idea of Persuasive Computing: how computer systems can be used to vary their angle and conduct. When I knew Prof. Fogg he talked enthusiastically about Persuasive Computing benefitting humankind, making us tolerant of variety.
McNamee says Fb uses Persuasive Computing as a device to not profit humankind, however to control it. It is Fb’s energy software not for the customers who’re the product however for advertisers which are the purchasers.
Fb found that when individuals are pissed off, they submit extra, the hyperlink extra, they stay on the social community longer. The corporate is agnostic about how it impacts individuals, so long as it permits them to realize revenue by sticking extra advertisements in entrance of our faces: From the corporate’s perspective you and I and another three billion individuals are not there to be entertained or in any other case made completely satisfied; we’re there to turn out to be knowledge factors for advert mongers.
With out Ethics
All the things we see and everybody instructed to us to Comply with or Like, every Group we’re invited to hitch is calculated by algorithms and based mostly on the perpetual collection of our knowledge. These algorithms, in fact, have machine intelligence, however they are devoid of different human qualities together with ethics, compassion, empathy, humor, irony, nuance or any want to discover a widespread floor between people who as soon as would respectfully disagree.
Filter Bubbles, Persuasive Computing and ever-more effective algorithms manipulate us and make us addictive. We belief newcomers into our private bubbles as a result of they know individuals we all know. This sound comforting in itself, however it reinforces what we already assume and introduces few new thoughts to ponder—until they piss us off or scare us. So, in case you are like my spouse, Paula Israel, who’s enthusiastic about protecting animals within the wild, you may be fed all types of stories and pictures about horrible things being executed to wolves or whales. For those who hate Donald Trump, you may be selected to get tons of studies on the obscenities he foments each day; and when you consider that America should not be the place it has been for welcoming the drained, poor, huddled plenty of the world, you’ll be fed pretend information about rapists, terrorists and drug runners massed at our southern borders plotting to destroy a neighborhood close to you.
Facebook’s knowledge has found out that once we are outraged, horrified, indignant or saddened, we keep on the social network longer. We share extra, we like extra, and we publish extra, and it has designed and calibrated it in order that we do this.
Brexit as a Petri Dish
The outcome, in fact, has an incredible deal to do with the mess we are in. Hackers and faux information mongers discovered to good voter manipulation throughout Brexit in 2015. Then they took what they discovered there and refined it to serve Donald Trump in 2016, and nothing has occurred to stop it from occurring once more within the US or anyplace else where there are purported to be free elections.
They have hired individuals to deal with the issue who have resigned in frustration, shortly after beginning. Basecamp, has stopped promoting or being current on Facebook, Instagram and WhatsApp. In April, Proctor & Gamble set Facebook –and Google—on notice to vary their practices or lose the ad help of the world’s largest shopper products company. In the event that they depart, you’ll be able to assume others will comply with.
But to date, all this noise and concern, all these congressional inquiries and media diatribes haven’t prevented Fb from reporting larger and larger riches quarter after quarter after quarter.
I feel that is as a result of we addicts maintain coming back and permitting the algorithms to control our eyeballs.
A few of what I simply stated is in Zucked, while some are my own conclusion after reading simply half of this essential e-book. Like most of my readers, I’ve turn into increasingly concerned about Facebook’s choice for algorithms over ethics.
I have not yet completed the ebook as I mentioned. I’ve reached some extent where McNamee has shaped a small group of highly capable and influential people who are speaking to the media, advising influential elected officers and of course, writing articles and this e-book. They’re chatting with anyone who listens within the hope that if Fb won’t change itself than the federal government ought to do it for them.
In Silicon Valley’s strongest circles, there is a very lengthy historical past of Libertarianism in business: the consensus is that the tech business can self-regulate itself better than the federal government can do it. I have lengthy been of that thoughts, however this ebook has already satisfied me in any other case.
There’s little proof that the tech business will self-regulate with any higher integrity or effectiveness than the oil and fuel business of an earlier period where the government needed to break up Commonplace Oil in 1911.
Our business has been all concerning the legend of startups on the world’s financial system. Entrepreneurialism is on the shortlist of hope for the longer term. It’s a great dream full of fantastic tales, but the fact is that the miracle of the startup has been eclipsed by seemingly indestructible giants like Fb (and Google who shares lots of Fb’s questionable algorithmic manipulations).
As for me, I’m not about to go away both Fb or Google. My work still is determined by these platforms in an awesome many ways. But I am chopping back, increasingly more each day. Actually, I see Roger McNamee on the platform as properly.
I imagine there is a vanishing point someplace in my not-too-distant future. I might favor the break-up of Facebook by authorities, but I worry that each Congress and the Supreme Courtroom would shield the interests of shareholders and advertisers than of us, three billion addicts.
