Today’s #oneadayplant is for my Dad, Tom, who started growing Oxalis triangularis subsp. papilionacea (Purple False Shamrock) recently and is now obsessed with it! . On the cusp of hardiness, but really more reliably grown as a houseplant in the UK. This subspecies of the South American species is marginally hardier than O. triangularis. Regardless, if you choose to grow it outdoors in the UK, expect it to not come back unless in the mildest spots. . Makes a good houseplant though given a reasonably bright spot. Typically will go through a period of dormancy and die back to its tuberous rhizomes (which look like bulbs). This will happen in winter if outdoors and typically for indoor plants when light levels drop. Other than regular watering, the only maintenance required is to give it a haircut every year to encourage fresh regrowth. Gets to approx 45cm tall and wide (18”). . I like it for a few reasons. 1. It flowers very freely with minimal input. 2. The foliage colour is great. 3. The foliage goes to sleep at night folding up (my Dad’s favourite quality). 4. Its foliage is edible either raw or cooked. (Only consume small amounts, perhaps as a colourful addition to a salad). If you eat a lot of it it will likely cause digestive discomfort or worse...
