Art Tutorial (aliased brush, oil painting look)
I've been using Pikmin Echo as a springboard for myself to practice new art techniques!
I had a few people ask me how I draw backgrounds in paint dot net, so I quickly drew this image you see below!
Now, there isn't one process I use, I mostly freehand it straight from the noggin to the paper. I barely use references, and I really should use them more often!!
But this should show an outline of generally what's going on in my mind when I'm doodling a doodle :)
Step 1: Choose sky color
I personally like to use either a light blue or a light orange!
This reference uses a light orange so I'll steal it.
Step 2: block the main contrast out with a big brush
There is a foreground and a background to this scene, a clear light and dark.
It's much easier to work with a blocked out pattern! It's like the sketching equivalent in this technique.
By the way, I'm using an aliased brush because I'm a pixelart nerd (so retro 🤓☝️) and also because it makes selecting blocks of color much less messy! But trust me, it will look soft in the end :)
Step 3: Look for blocks of common color
I see big patches of blue and orange when I squint my eyes, so I plot those in!
Look at how the light comes from the top right, it illuminates the trees on one side!
Step 4: Look for hue variations in the lights
Natural colors are never going to be flat or homogeneous--theres variations everywhere!
Add in greenish, reddish, bluish and yellowish patches, and even if at first it's a little scary to stray from such bold colors, I promise, gray is essential to making a truly vivid image!
Step 5: move on to the darks
The tree trunks in the left shade looked blue to me! So I toss in some blue splotches.
Don't worry if it looks messy. You can always clean up your messes later <3
Step 6: Fine detail in the very back
Going just like a traditional painter, painting the back first is perfect because you will later paint over the back layers with the front ones, creating realistic layers of texture!
It is much easier to go back to front than the reverse.
Think about the shape design and the flow of all of the elements.
The mountains curl up and down in very specific ways, and the trees look like circles from very far away, with leafless outliers few and far between.
Step 7: let's take a break from the canvas and do homework

learning how to simplify incredibly complicated shapes is crucial!
Trees, grass, rocks, everything in nature has very complicated structure, but you can simplify them very much!
With newfound respect for the complexity of nature, start noting down the elements of your scene in more detail.
You can move your reference around and crop it so that it's easier to perfectly replicate what you wish to draw....but....
personally, I like to use the reference more for vibes and just ad lib the rest!
Study the general shapes of your reference, and apply them in new, unique ways!
I hope this tutorial was helpful for you!
Please feel free to rb this post with any art you make with this! I'll be excited to see what you create :)
Thanks for reading!

Toof.bmp
The first of four gifts I’ve created for Christmas of 2023. This one is for @vadapega.
It’s Pantufa in an MS Paint style! Not much to this one though. It’s just Toof getting a good snooze in. I mean, he is a cat, and cats spend about 90 percent of their day sleeping.
For this drawing, I tried to mimic VAdaPEGA’s MS Paint style. I know he has a process for shading in a black and white checkerboard style, using an older version of MS Paint in black and white mode. In this case, I cheated a bit, and used Paint.NET to try and pull off a similar effect. I wouldn’t call it as detailed as VAdaPEGA can pull off with just MS Paint. But I’m just starting to get back into shading, so hopefully this can at least look passable for one of my first tries.

Ho-ly shit, I actually did it. I got PaintDotNet working in linux! I can move windows around, I can save files, and it might be outdated but it actually works! I used some KDE wizardry to fix the issue with windows not moving properly and protontricks seems to manage the calls decently, I assume due to DXVK. I don't know what to say except that I didn't expect to get this far... I've heard that it wouldn't detect pressure sensitivity, even if you did manage to get it working, but my drawing tablet is broken right now so I can't really confirm or deny.
#I can do art again!#I'll still be keeping an eye on updates to Pinta bc paintdotnet is *not* performant under protontricks#PaintDotNet#Linux#Manjaro#art software#protontricks

Friend from A Is For
The-making-of below the cut
I tried to make this fellow look 3D-printed, as the bright colors reminded me of a plastic toy. Friend's voice is also distorted and blocky-sounding, which is why the face has a pixel effect. If you look closely, you might be able to see some pixelated blocks on Friend's body texture, too!

My father likes going to Bojangles and Taco Bell every Monday and Friday. So the moment I think I'm done with a piece, my mind wanders into another idea. The neverending pile. 😅

i finally finished my sketch-over of Gelato from the other day, and i'm happy with how it turned out :)
#Gelato#my characters#my art#i wasn't sure how far i'd get with this initially honestly...#but im really happy with how he ended up :)#i feel that i could've probably adjusted some things like the thickness of his legs. or how many fingers he had.#since i was mostly worried about going off-model from his original sketch....#but regardless i think he turned out swell#the sketchovers aren't as indepth as i probably would've wanted in the beginning. but i enjoy how it looks#i was also kinda worried his clothes would mess up his existing colour pallette. but i think i happened upon some fitting colours for him#his boards design is just one of the goopy patterns i do in paintdotnet. ive made a few of them and picked one at random#i probably should've picked a different one though because the colours distract from his swimtrunks#but oh well#his shirts design is somewhat based off the mario sunshine shinesprite shirt. i was initially going to draw the shine sprites but#when i started placing splotches on his shirt. they turned out like pawprints. and so i just pivoted to using those instead#the design on his trunks i kinda had a vague idea of like. palm trees and stuff. but ended up drawing spirals and liking that more#his hair is also a mix between what i had in SFM and how his hair actually looks in Helpers sketch

Lend a Helping Hand
Another drawing challenge by @ralsene24
Frida and David at least enjoyed the cooling weather. As usual, always lend a helping hand to your friend who doesn't have one.
Additionally, A pair of upcycled MRT train seats from the older SMRT Kawasaki C151 trains in blue colour scheme is used in this art illustration.

And yeah photoshopping can be a verb. Work has been done on the photo in the shop.
Ooh! 💡 OR! What if I photoshop you to make you like you're me! Then anyone who would harass you would harass me instead! 🤪
Don't worry though, all your messages came in as anons!

Ok, I’m so fucking close to taking the nuclear option when it comes to finding the software I need. I can’t find any linux software that I feel as comfortable using as I do with paintdotnet and I’m this fucking close to just making my own art tool.
I need someone to either stop me or be the devil on my shoulder and push me.
