Paradise Road (1997)

It would have been difficult to make Paradise Road into a film devoid of emotion. World War II and prisoners of war camps will do that. But what part do the characters play in making this film effective? In this instance, the setting does most of the work. It isn't a bad movie. It's pretty good overall. Considering the source material, you do wish it'd offer more.

Singapore is suddenly attacked by the Japanese. Fleeing for their lives, Adrienne Pargiter (Glenn Close), Dr. Verstak (Frances McDormand), Daisy Drummond (Pauline Collins), Susan Macarthy (Cate Blanchett) and other escapes by boat only to be captured. Struggling to survive the harsh reality of prisoners of war, the women must find a way to keep their hopes up until the conflict ends.

There's nothing like a good underdog story. With these kinds of odds, it’s impossible not to cheer for the ladies and it’s made even easier by some good performances. This is a terrific cast and the female performers give this film a novel aspect. We’ve seen movies about prisoners of war before but never quite like this. No matter how bad things got in The Great Escape, the captives were tough; trained to survive the war. Their wives and girlfriends never signed up for this. It makes the film that much more relatable and difficult to predict.

You're wondering what the women's main survival tactic might be. It's a choir. Adrienne gets everyone to practice (in secret) until they're all good enough and coordinated enough to throw “concerts” for the camp to listen and look forward to. It's a great idea. Music naturally boosts the spirit. It’s why they recommend it to those who are shipwrecked. This tiny act binds them together and requires no equipment whatsoever. In a world where everything is ugly, hot, or out to kill you, a song is like a foot massage after a hard day's work. Paradise Road misses an opportunity by confirming this. We don't specifically need to be told from a glasses-wearing point-dexter “studies have proven that...” but multiple times throughout, cynics complain “it’s just a bunch of humming”, “Why are they doing this”, “You’re wasting your time” and so on. We never hear “I can’t wait to hear the concert tonight” or even someone suffering on their death bed smiling weakly when the melody slowly creeps into their room. It's a mistake not to make it at least a little bit more obvious that this tiny act of rebellion, as small and insignificant as it might have been initially, truly means.

This omission is a big obstacle in this film’s way to greatness. It almost overcomes it, but not quite. Luckily, the rest of the film (mostly) carries its weight. The women feel like real people. Even the Japanese overseers, though cruel, have human moments. It's another detail which makes this film fall short of what it could be. The story is told with a "soft touch". So much more could be said about the war, about these people but you can't argue with the performances. These event being worth telling, its uplifting told do also regain it some points.

Paradise Road does not pack the emotional punch you would expect it to. I still recommend it. The film has numerous good qualities and considering its relative obscurity, you're more likely to see at home after renting it for a dollar from the video store or just catching on cable instead of paying $10+ to see in the multiplex. This makes it is worth your time. (On DVD, May 2, 2015)
