With regards that last paragraph, I actually think Eraqus is the one who is chained to the past. It’s why he’s so willing to let Xehanort back in because he is truly Eraqus’ last salvation to having any semblance of his old life back. So long as Xe pledges the right side (aka his side) Er will live in so much plausible deniability that he’ll become his enabler. Meanwhile Xehanort is so caught up in destiny and fate that he purposefully binds himself to his future. His younger self is witness to everything he’s going to do and fatalism has such a hold on him that he doesn’t even care. (Supposedly, I mean really yx being such an ass and nothing else is boring and def not supportive of dr context but regardless) I think it’s their unwillingness to look at the present due their obsession with history/fate respectively that ruins the goodwill they once had.

Some disparate thoughts about S5 of SPN bc none of these were long enough to be its own text posts.

I dont think it's talked about enough how effectively this season breaks Dean's resolve to keep refusing Michael. You could say it starts with Ellen and Jo sacrificing themselves but honestly? I think it starts all the way back in Changing Channels. Seeing even an avoidant dick like Gabriel get involved to try and convince them? I feel like Dean was affected by that. Its a great early parallel to Zachariah bringing Adam back to convince him. A completely separate third party that had nothing to do with this brought to convince him

Christian Theologists please feel free to correct me if im wrong but AFAIK Jesus and Joshua are the same person. Jesus is etymological related to Joshua and some cursory research on the Internet (so check this out... lmao) tells me that there is no Angel Joshua. But there is Angel of Joshua and thr Angel of Joshua is also the Angel of Jesus. Joshua is another name for Jesus. We've all seen the Jesus JJBA post. Why am I talking about this?

I believe The Gardener at the Centre of Heaven, the person Castiel calls "the Angel Joshua" is Jesus. He is the only person God speaks to. He's able to take Sam and Dean from Zachariah in Heaven with no fight aside from mild arguing from Zach. Implying that Joshua is higher up on the org chart than he is - he's killed other Angels for less and if we're assuming he's at full power on his home turf he'd have no problem icing Joshua. Why wouldn't he?

Dean being empty on the inside and therefore immune to Famine is such a great illustration of his depression and impending sense of hopelessness.

When Castiel goes on a weeks long Bender upon hearing God doesn't care, he's taking a page out of Deans book. Dean, having seen this behaviour several hundred times before in himself, helps Cas through it. "Yeah your dad sucks and has just given you abandonment issues. Been there. Here have some ibuprofen and let me tell you you're more than your dad." Cas would have been Angry with Dean saying "yes" to Michael anyway.

But i think this conversation is why he became outright *pissed* at Dean for even CONSIDERING it.

When Dean tells Cas to blow him. And Cas looks like he's considering it for a second. Thats it thats the thought.

"I REBELLED FOR YOU! I GAVE UP EVERYTHING FOR YOU AND THIS IS THE THANKS I GET?" is EVERYTHING to me. Of course Cas would be pissed but this is SUCH an excellent illustration of his devotion to DEAN. Not God, not the world, not the impending apocalypse. The entire reason he's not on Heavens side is because Dean wasn't on Heavens side. The entire reason he was hoping to stop the Apocalypse a different way was because DEAN wanted to. Cas would have supported Dean in whatever decision he made with his free will. If Cas was on the side of ending the Apocalypse against all odds now that all roads are exhausted, he would jave supported Dean fully. Yes, he's pissed that he gave up everything only to be confronted with the fact that he didn't have to - but I think he's more pissed that Dean doesn't see he did it for HIM. That Dean is betraying his own ideals and therefore betraying Cas.

When they're about to go get Adam (my beautiful sweet boy...) Cas takes off his tie and Dean looks like he's so into it for a second. He checks Cas out for a fraction of a second and THEN LOOKS AWAY. Man's is not BEATING the bisexual Angel Lover allegations.

The parallel of Buck’s face at the start of 5x14 when Eddie is telling him that he practically doesn’t see the point to life, and then at the END of the ep where Eddie breaths in and says that yeah,,, maybe he does see the point to life is O U T S T A N D I N G to me like !!!! That man went through the 7 stages of grief in the first part. And THAT is how you do a good unserious episode.

-The title being "Croak" did not even cross my mind as a reference to fuckin FROGS! The whole time I've just been like, "Oh yeah, croak is a reference to death. Somebody or multiples somebodies are probably gonna die. Nothing to see here," only to be slapped with THAT at the start. And that's before we even get into how thoroughly ridiculous the entire "frogger" ensemble is. The whole lot of them without an ounce of self-preservation & sharing half a brain cell (which Hannah is largely occupying since she got that tape buried & knew what to say when surrendering). Edwin walked directly into danger & all but announced he wanted to be murdered. Hannah ran like she was a recently animated scarecrow trying to escape a cornfield. And Kodi was responsible for that sat phone getting broken. Perfection. No notes.

-A YJs ROAD TRIP!!!! I'm hating that Natalie & Lottie are dead more than ever now cause GOD! can you imagine. the possibilities of them ALL. crammed into that minivan together? I just know they would've been thriving so much in the midst of this chaos. We lost bad fr</3. But it's like how I've been examining in my previous reactions that this season has really leaned into the parallels with S1 with this #FindingLottiesKiller™ plotline being a direct extension of the #WhoKilledTravis™ one with remixed roles & it's just so juicy to dig into. And every last interaction starting from Misty storming into Tai & Van's hotel room to them waiting for Shauna in the elevator to Shauna getting passive aggressive about having to do everything at the gas station to the murder accusation text chain was absolutely fucking G O L D. I really come alive the most when the adults just get unfettered access to interact as much as possible like this, so I was really thriving even if the situation quickly became dire.

-I know some people are scared as shit of "Other Tai," but much like how I've been choosing to remain as blissfully ignorant as possible to bask in the beauty of the Tai & Van interactions this season, I'm gonna have to stick by her side if she manages to get Van through this season alive. "But I'm the one who can save you" was all I needed to hear. Say less, queen! Sometime we WILL. have to deal with the unrelenting horror of the fact that Tai is trapped in her own body (cause we do. see her watching herself through the glass in the promo for "A Normal, Boring Life"</3 & we know. ~Misty witnessing hospital suffocation~ has. to be coming up) & we have no way of knowing how long that has been going on, but as long as "Other Tai" is using murder as a force of good (since this ep all but confirmed that "Other Tai" didn't kill Lottie IF we can trust what Walter said about Shauna's DNA), then fuck it, let's go!

-The way Shauna & Misty specifically are being positioned as foils of one another, particularly in this season, is so fascinating to continue to dissect for me. While it wasn't the MOST apparent this ep compared to others, moments like Shauna unironically saying, "You are REALLY bad at boundaries," as THEE. queen of not understanding what healthy boundaries mean & her being FLABBERGASTED that Misty has accused her of killing Lottie when she was perfectly fine with accusing Misty of shit she had no evidence to back up really reinforces my initial observation that S3 is simultaneously Misty's Self-Actualization Arc™ & Shauna's Fall From Grace™. They both are so perfectly alike each other, right down to being the most actively & willingly murderous members of the YJs committing acts of violence just because, that they have been butting heads the entire time cause there is no way in hell they will see how alike they are in their current states. But their roles gradually shifting so that Misty is demanding. to be included while Shauna is driving people away more with her reckless behavior is so satisfying on a narrative level.

-I'm really curious what exactly is gonna be done with Hilary Swank's Mystery Character™ (beyond Shauna totally trying to murder her ass) since we know she's finally showing up next ep & already have confirmation that she is not Hannah's daughter Alex (who I can only assume Shauna will kill after breaking into her home ala Adam if the end of the ep is any indication...) & that this is just another case of Shauna shifting blame, jumping to conclusions, & making baseless accusations. Coupled with the fact the showrunners have confirmed she would still be there in S4 if they get renewed as a preemptive reveal that she survives, I have. to wonder how exactly we're gonna go from A to B when we know she's gonna be fighting for her life almost immediately when she shows up onscreen. Is Shauna actually gonna end up arrested by the end of the season? Will the rest of the YJs manage to intervene even though they don't have a vehicle & are stranded in a hospital? Some other third option that hasn't come to mind yet?

-Ugh, as much as I am RAVENOUS for these final 3 eps (especially with the way this. ep ended cause I was bouncing off the fuckin walls), I also want to stave them off for as long as possible because it just means more.waiting. for S4 to be announced, go into production, & then take up to 1-2 years to finish. The only thing that has me keeping my patience in check is the knowledge of the strong likelihood that S4 will be an even rougher, more vicious winter than S2 was like how S3 has gone to great pains to parallel S1. I know many have expressed their belief that the YJs will be rescued before the end of this season, but I have never gotten that indication, even with the final eps being titled "How the Story Ends" & "Full Circle" in mind. The full 19 months in the wilderness are not up yet, there's so many more ways they can go insane that we're only just starting to explore with them killing+consuming Coach Ben when they didn't need to & hunting/trapping/killing the "frogger" group even though they're the first sign of civilization they've had since they've been trapped, & it would feel like a waste of the premise if we do not see these girls fully descend into the feral bruality that has been promised since the "pit girl" scene. So, I am gonna savor every last morsel of these final 3 eps & hope S4 is the most psychologically damaging, violent season we have seen yet!

F = Fiance(e) (How do they feel about commitment? How quick would they want to get married?) They're fine with it, they'd probably want to date for at least a year or two before starting talk about that kinda stuff tho

G = Gentle (How gentle are they, both physically and emotionally?) Very gentle, big gentle giant... He's very mellow and soft emotionally as well

Q = Quizzes (How much would they remember about you? Do they remember every little detail you mention in passing, or do they kind of forget everything?) He remembers a lot pretty easy.. you just sometimes gotta give him a minute for the info to load .w.

R = Remember (What is their favorite moment in your relationship?) First kiss uvu

S = Security (How protective are they? How would they protect you? How would they like to be protected?) Decently protective... they'll let you stand up for yourself if they know you can and back you up... It'll spike though if they know you can't and get a LOT more protective

T = Try (How much effort would they put into dates, anniversaries, gifts, everyday tasks?) He's gonna put a good bit of effort in! He's learned what you like and your interests and what foods you like and activities you enjoy and will plan out a whole day around that

Live Playing Double Exposure First Thoughts:

A: Okay, I do love that you can pick Max’s outfit right away. I chose the rainbow sweater.

B: This sounds over dramatic but it was so intense to see Max’s face again. For a very brief moment I was 13 again watching Max wake up in the storm.

C: Am I insane or all the sounds in this game like…muffled?? I have my audio settings all the way up so it’s not that. Speaking of settings I also took the motion blur off and the graphics look so much now.

D: I’m already finding it super interesting that Max finds comfort in the destruction of old buildings after hell week. That could mean a lot of things but I’ll wait to see if the game tells me before I get analytical.

I: Getting used to older Max is an adjustment. She doesn’t feel out of character per se, but it is weird because I keep expecting her to act like her eighteen year old self and then she doesn’t because she’s older now.

J: Older Max is already coming off as a lot more confident/reckless than younger Max. I like that change a lot!

K: I don’t know how I feel about Max making a one liner every time I examine anything.

L: Ah fuck. Is fate after Safiya or Max this time.

M: Did they really put the “We will :)” flashback right before making us confirm that Max and Chloe broke up. I’m going to fight Decknine.

O: I know people are upset at the “high school sweetheart” line but in context it seems like Max is trying to deflect the conversation to not talk about what Chloe actually was to her.

P: The texts between Max and Chloe were so uncomfortable to read. I know the storm changed them both, but….i don’t know…it just seems weird that Chloe reacted like that to Max wanting to move in with her permanently. I’m getting the vibe that their relationship was mentally and emotionally over on Chloe’s end way before it was on Max’s end.

Q: Max is ghosting her parents now and that devastates me.

R: Can I have a middle ground option on Amanda? I’m not ready for Max to have a huge crush yet, but I wouldn’t say she’s not Max’s type.

Triangle Tuesday 3: The orthocenter, the Euler line, and orthocentric systems

Previously, we have looked at two different ways to mark a point in a triangle. First, we drew cevians (lines from the vertices) to the midpoints of the sides and found that they all cross at a point, which is the centroid. Then we tried drawing perpendiculars to the sides from the midpoints, and those all met at the circumcenter. And you could do this with any point on the side of a triangle -- draw a cevian to it, or a perpendicular from it, and see what happens.

This time, though, we're going to do both. That is, we're going to work with the cevians that also form perpendiculars to the sides. These are the altitudes, which run from a vertex to the nearest point on the opposite side, called the foot of the altitude. The three altitudes all meet at a point H, and that's the orthocenter. (The letter H has been used to mark the orthocenter since at least the late 19th century. I believe it's from the German Höhenschnittpunkt, "altitude intersection point.") Anyway, let's prove that the orthocenter exists.

Theorem: the three altitudes of a triangle coincide.

Here's a very simple proof that the three altitudes coincide. It relies on the existence of the circumcenter, which we already proved before. Given a triangle ABC, draw a line through A parallel to the opposite side BC. Do the same at B and C. These lines cross at D, E, and F and form the antimedial triangle (in blue).

Then the altitudes of ABC are also the perpendicular bisectors of DEF. We proved before that perpendicular bisectors all meet at a point, therefore altitudes do as well.

That was easy. Let's do it again, but in a different way. It's not quite as simple, but it includes a large bonus.

Theorem: the three altitudes of a triangle coincide at a point colinear with the circumcenter and centroid, and GH = 2 GO.

Let's take triangle ABC, and let F be the midpoint of side AB. Then mark two points that we already know, the circumcenter O and the centroid G. We'll also draw the median (green) and the perpendicular bisector (blue) that run through F, leaving the other ones out to avoid cluttering the picture.

We already know from our look at the centroid that G cuts segment FC at a third of its length, so GC = 2GF. Let's extend segment OG in the direction of G by twice its length out to a point we'll label H, so that GH = 2GO.

Now consider the two triangles GOF and GHC. By construction, their two blue sides are in the ratio 1:2, and the same for their two black sides. They also meet in vertical angles at their common vertex G. So by side-angle-side, the triangles are similar, and it follows that HC is parallel to OF, and therefore perpendicular to AB. So H lies on the altitude from H to side AB.

By analogous construction, we can show that H also lies on the other two altitudes. So not only have we proved that the altitudes coincide, but also that O, G, and H all lie on a line, and furthermore that G is located one third of the way from O to H, in any triangle.

This proof is due to Leonard Euler, and the line OGH is called the Euler line. Not only these three points but many others as well fall on this line, which we will get to later on.

Let's look at some more properties of the orthocenter and the feet of the altitudes. I'm just going to look at the case of an acute triangle for now, and show how this extends to the obtuse case later.

Theorem: two vertices of a triangle and the feet of the altitudes from those vertices are concyclic.

Proof is easy: the two right triangles AHcC and AHaC share segment AC as a hypotenuse. Therefore AC is a diameter of the common circumcircle of AHcC and AHaC (following from Thales's theorem).

(Incidentally, look at the angle formed by the blue segment and the altitude CHc. It subtends the same arc as angle CAHa, so (by the inscribed angle theorem again) they must be equal. That's not a part of this theorem, so just tuck that fact away for a moment.)

Theorem: a vertex, the two adjacent feet of the altitudes, and the orthocenter are concyclic.

Same idea, but now the right triangles are AHcH and AHbH, and AH is the diameter of the common circumcircle.

(And incidentally, look at the angle formed by the new blue line and the altitude CHc. It subtends the same arc as HbAH, which is same angle as CAHa. So those angles must be equal too. Since both angles between a blue line and the altitude CHc are equal to the same thing, they are equal to each other. Again, not a part of this theorem, just something I wanted to note.)

So those are some interesting concyclicities, but now let's look at the pedal triangle of the orthocenter, which is called the orthic triangle.

Oh, hey, it's made up blue lines, just like the ones we were talking about. And we proved that the two longest blue lines make equal angles with the altitude between them. By symmetry, we can prove the same thing about all the angles made by the blue lines. So that means

Theorem: two sides of the orthic triangle make equal angles with the altitude between them.

Another way to say this is that the altitudes are the angle bisectors of the orthic triangle. And I admit that was kind of a roundabout way to introduce the orthic triangle, but I think it makes the proof of this property easier to follow.

Two other properties of the orthic triangle immediately follow from this:

In an acute triangle, the inscribed triangle with the shortest perimeter is the orthic triangle

and

In an acute triangle, the orthic triangle forms a triangular closed path for a beam of light reflected around a triangle

which are two ways of saying the same thing.

But those two properties only hold for acute triangles. What happens to the orthic triangle in an obtuse triangle? Let's push point C downward to make triangle ABC obtuse and see what happens. To make things clear, I'm going to extend the sides of ABC and the altitudes from line segments into lines. Here's the before:

And here's the after:

The orthocenter has moved outside of triangle ABC, and two of the altitudes have their feet on extensions of the sides of ABC rather than on the segments AC and BC. The orthic triangle now extends outside ABC, and certainly isn't the inscribed triangle with the shortest perimeter any more.

But look at it another way. We now have an acute triangle ABH, and the line HHc is an altitude of both the obtuse triangle ABC and the acute triangle ABH. Meanwhile, lines AC and BC have become altitudes of ABH.

So what we have is essentially the same acute triangle with two swaps: point C trades places with H, and Ha trades places with Hb. That means that our two theorems about concyclic points morph into each other as triangle ABC switches between acute and obtuse. Here's an animation to show the process:

And this is why I didn't bother with the obtuse case above -- each theorem of concyclicity is the obtuse case of the other.

So if we can just exchange the orthocenter with one of the vertices, what does this mean for their relationship? If you are given a group of vertices and lines, how can you tell which one is the orthocenter and which one are the vertices? Well, you can't.

Theorem: Given an acute or obtuse triangle ABC and its orthocenter H, A is the orthocenter of triangle BCH, B is the orthocenter of ACH, and C is the orthocenter of ABH.

The proof comes from consulting either of the "before" and "after" figures above. Take any three lines that form a triangle, red or black. The other three lines are then the altitudes of that triangle. The three feet are where a red and black line meet perpendicularly, so they are the same for all four possible triangles, which means all four share the same orthic triangle.

(Of course, if ABC is a right triangle, then we get a degenerate case, as you can see from the gif at the moment when C and H meet.)

Such an arrangement of four points is called an orthocentric system. Of the four points, one is always located inside an acute triangle formed by the other three, and it's conventional to label the interior one H and the others ABC.

Orthocentric systems pop up all over the place in triangles, so expect to see more of them as we go along. Now, let me do one little lemma about altitudes, and then I'll show something cool about orthocentric systems.

Lemma: the segment of an altitude from the orthocenter to a side of the triangle is equal to the extension of the altitude from the side to the circumcircle.

We can show this with just a little shuffling of angle identities. Extend altitude CHc to meet the circumcircle at C'. The angles CAB and CC'B, labeled in red, subtend the same arcs, so they are equal. Triangle ABHb is a right triangle, so angle HbBA, in blue, is complementary to it. The same is true for the right triangle C'BHc, so the two angles labeled in blue are equal. Then by angle-side-angle, triangles BHcH and HHcC' are congruent, and segment HHc = HcC'.

By the same argument, we can show that triangle AHHc is congruent to AC'Hc, which leads us into the next bit.

Theorem: all the circumcircles of the triangles of an orthocentric system are the same size.

The blue triangle has the same circumcircle as triangle ABC. From the foregoing, the blue and green triangles are congruent. Therefore their circumcircles are the same size as well. The same argument works for ACH and BCH.

So here is an orthocentric system with its four circumcircles.

The four circumcenters O, Oa, Ob, and Oc form another orthocentric system, congruent to the first one.

Chiastic Structure of S2

The post preceding this is Chiastic Structure of S1.

S1 was neat, tidy and simple compared to S2.

S2 was...difficult. I have a feeling this is because of the missing minisodes. There felt like there were "holes" in places, where there was a strong scene with no corresponding pair, and yet in others there were single lines matching up.

You will also notice its quite...skewed? The hinging midpoint is right at the end of Ep4, which means the last two episodes mirror the preceding the four! So there are gaps. For example, the conversation in the pub in Ep2 doesn't match with anything specific.

One of the things I hoped it might shed some light on was the purpose of the trip to Edinburgh, which seems like a bit of a dead end. It does, in a way - I will discuss it a bit further below, along with some other parallels that didn't fit the structure.

Discussion on parallels that didn't fit the structure:

1. Crowley is given permission to destroy all of Job's possessions /  Gabriel refuses to give permission to destroy the Earth aka Armageddon II

There is a repeat emphasis on licenses, permits and authority throughout S2, so I really thought Crowley's permit to destroy of Job's possessions would have a match. It did, but it didn't fit the structure! If you look closely some of the other permits and authority lines do slot in. I'm planning some metas on these topics in the near future, as the use of language around these concepts is quite interesting, and there is some history to throw into the mix as well.

2. Crowley deceives the archangels with the help of an angel

This pair is a reference to Crowley and Aziraphale teaming up in the Job minisode to restore Job's children, and then Muriel aiding Crowley to sneak into Heaven. I'd just like to point out that Crowley could have gone to Heaven on his own - remember Eric went up with the hellfire in S1E6 - but he doesn't know where to go and get Gabriel's file, that is what he needs Muriel for.

3.  Popping up to Edinburgh

Ah, the trip to Edinburgh! Why? WHY!!! Why go all that way for ... nothing?

Guess what - it's a parallel sequence to Crowley popping up to Heaven.

I was going to write a companion piece to this but...my to do list is getting a bit long at the moment. Let me know if you want me to expand on it.

4. Ignoring messages

So this one started as "Nina gets txt messages from Lindsay, Mrs Sandwich says not to look at them," at the start of Ep3, then during the Ball Crowley is trying to lead the humans out of the bookshop and Shax confronts him with another bundle of mail. Crowley is succeeding in ignoring his messages from Hell, but Nina isn't.

5. Muriel and The Interrupted Tea Ceremony

In S2 it noticeable that everyone except Crowley needs permission to enter the bookshop, whereas in S1 they could just walk in. Originally I made a comment elsewhere that I thought this part matched with a sub-story to the Ball, the story of Sodom and Gomorrah and hospitality to angels, but then I came back and had another look and saw that there was a surface match - but I'm still going to do another post about the "cupperty" because it keeps getting lost in all the noise!

6. Threats and Declarations of War

Shax makes a number of threats throughout the series, to hunt Crowley down and to declare war on Aziraphale. So when Aziraphale inadvertently declares war on Hell with the halo toss, you'd think there would be a matching pair. There is, but not with a declaration of war, just a threat to Crowley. This is probably one of the weaker pairs.

7. Mysteriosity, audacity, ferocity and dangerocity

The Marvelous Mr Fell and his Mysteriosity has a pair with Shax's speech to her fellow demons about the unprecedented audacity of the attack on the bookshop, and how their lack of numbers will be made up for with their ferocity and...dangerocity. It should have fit, but it didn't.
