~~~~
Jason looked at the phone screen and didn’t believe Danny has really decided to entrust his safety in the haunted lair to one drunk and unrequited Phantom.
He had enough. Jason jumped up and grabbed his helmet off the table.
‘Where do you think you’re going? Patrol’s coming soon.’ Tim took his eyes off the documents.
‘None of your business.’ Red Hood quickly found keys to a jet and ran for an exit. ‘Cass, while I’m gone, you’re in charge of the alley.’
~~~~
Demons, spirits, and ghosts swung around as if in a dance. And Danny, whom Jason easily spotted entering The Gambler’s Den, did not seem foreign at this festival of death. The red light gently illuminated his pale skin, which almost fused with color of his white kimono. The flowing fabric made his silhouette as blurry and elusive as most visitors.
One second without looking at the boy, and he was in the opposite corner, where the crowd were much smaller. VIP zone? Otherworldly creatures, deserving special treatment, were rarely friendly to humans. And Jason was tense about it for a moment. But after noticing waving with enthusiasm teenager, a man in white clothes rushed to respond to the gesture and a ghost with an eye patch sitting in the chair nodded to him, ringing with silver earrings.
Jason let his guard down a bit.
Another man in the black robe was not distracted by Danny. He threw the bones and glanced at them in disappointment. Then ghoul banged the table with fist. He rose, grabbed from a nearby bowl a mantou and bit. The next second his face was distorted by awareness and disgust.
He abruptly removed the triangle-shaped headband from Danny’s head and spat out a bite into it. Then ghoul fell to a floor. Well, nice carpets have softened it.
Jason shook his head, trying not to laugh at the strange situation.
At the same time, Danny boldly stepped over the fallen player and sat in a chair in front of the ghost in black and red clothes. The man began to demonstrate a technique of throwing bones, with continuous ringing after moving of his hands. Danny seemed passionate about this.
Constantine, who did not come with the Red Hood voluntarily, decides for the first time in the evening to speak out.
‘That’s weird.’ Constantine said with an intonation that spoke of his distrust of the situation.
‘What is it now?’ Jason took his eyes off the object of interest.
Fenton must be watched for his safety. Why did the warlock distract him? Jason completely distrusted Danny’s promise not to use his body parts as a bet.
‘His clothes.’ Constantine looked at the boy with discomfort. ‘Boy, are you sure your lover is alive?’
‘Don’t be rude. He looks great,’ said Jason ‘Maybe Danny wanted to dress up in a traditional costume. And it's not polite to ask people if they are alive. He’s always pale in all the photos. ’
Jason didn’t think costume selection was such a big deal.
‘No.’ Warlock shook his head ‘Kimono is Japanese national costume, not Chinese at all. And it’s on the left side which means your boyf..’
Unfamiliar to Jason spirit came up and patted Danny on the shoulder. The spirit and the boy bowed to each other.
‘I see.’ The puzzled expression on the warlock’s face is gone. ‘Your lover has interesting friends, Hood.’
‘Who is this guy? Explanation. Now.’ Jason barked irritably. Why did he always have to pull every word out of John?
‘Nurarihyon. Don’t be so nervous, he’s not dangerous to people. I just realized your boy here after a walk with Hyakki Yakko. Which explains the clothes.’ Сonstantine exhaled cigarette smoke and continued. ‘Your love doesn’t waste any time. In one evening, he met three ghost kings.’
‘Hyakki Yakko?’ Jason asked a lot calmer.
‘The night parade of one hundred demons when all of the yōkai, oni, ghosts parade through the streets.’ John shrugged his shoulders and shook the ashes off the cigarette into the nearest ashtray. It was also red and black. Warlock winced. ‘But your boyfriend feels like a fish in the water. Whoever his protector is, he is respected enough here. Let the guy have a drink and have some fun, he’ll be fine.’
‘God. Danny’s like a sheep in wolf’s clothing’ Jason sighed anxiously. ‘His parents are ghost hunters but he’s here as a plus one for Phantom, a ghost from Amity Park.’
‘More like a wolf in sheep’s clothing.’ Constantine muttered to himself. But when he saw a silver butterfly nearby, he decided that revealing other people’s secrets was not his problem. ‘I know who the Phantom is. Everyone has heard about Pariah Dark.’
Jason has not heard about him, but decided to keep quiet so as not to make a fool of himself. He will ask Danny about it.
Constantine took a brandy from the bartender. Then he took a big sip and looked at Jason. ‘You know, I always thought Little Red Riding Hood was incredibly stupid to let a wolf eat herself.’
‘What’s this about, Constantine?’ Hood rolled his eyes under the helmet.
And immediately he was glad that John did not see it. In the end, he helped him a lot not to scare Danny. Without the old man’s comments, he could have easily carried the boy away from the local ghosts on his shoulder like a caveman.
Jay didn’t want to spoil a first impression of a face-to-face meeting because of a kidnapping. Although, looking at how comfortable Fenton was among the nonhuman creatures, Jason doubted that Danny would have been screaming and panicking. But he wouldn’t be happy about being distracted from the fun. Hood shook his head in disappointment.
‘Nothing important.’ John brushed the silver butterfly off his shoulder. ‘You know, I’m in debt to the owner, so..If you don’t need my favors anymore, I’m leaving.’
‘Wait. Help me find Phantom.’ Сrime lord stopped him. ‘I need to make sure he doesn’t leave Danny here alone.’
John turned and looked at him as if he were terminally ill. ‘Phantom is in this room now. Only an idiot would have missed him.’ John spoke slowly and clearly, raising one eyebrow. ‘A conference of four kings. No joke. Stop poking around and messing up international relations, kid.’
Jason looked around the room again. ‘I don’t see him.’
‘Because you’re an idiot, kid’ John patted Jay on the shoulder and left. ‘Good luck explaining to Batman why you stole his jet.’
‘Heck.’

Why Would A Tree Taunt Thor?
Why Would A Tree Taunt Thor? https://ift.tt/Cjefak6 It might seem implausible, but Evan Gora and colleagues from across the USA have found that being struck by lightning might be good for you, if you’re a tree. The crucial factor is that you have to be the right kind of tree. They believe that Dipteryx oleifera, a tree found in the rain forests of Panama, may have evolved to attract lightning. Their study finds that lightning might be an overlooked element of tree competition. Lightning is lethal. Gora and colleagues found that when lightning strikes a Dipteryx tree, an average of 9.2 neighbouring trees die, as the electricity travels along branches and vines. The result is a patch of devastation, but it’s also an opportunity. The clearing in the canopy allows other trees to reach the light. But something particularly strange happens with Dipteryx. The team found that if a Dipteryx tree can grow more than 60cm (2 feet) in diameter, then it will be struck by lightning at least five times during its lifetime. Given lightning is so lethal, being struck once should be enough to end the ‘lifetime’ count. These extra strikes cannot be due to lucky survivals. Weirder, the Dipteryx trees grow higher than their neighbours and have wider crowns. Gora and colleagues estimate that they’re half as likely again to attract lightning compared to their neighbours. To find out what was going on, the research team tracked 93 trees struck by lightning over a 2-6 year period, monitoring survival rates, crown and trunk conditions, vine infestations, and neighbouring tree mortality. This sample included nine Dipteryx oleifera trees hit by lightning, and compared their responses with 84 lightning-struck trees of other species. After the team detected and located a lightning strike, they would send drones and on-ground teams to examine the trees. A Dipteryx oleifera tree just after being struck by lightning in 2019 (left) versus two years later (right). The tree survived the strike with minimal damage, and benefited from having its parasitic vines and competing neighbors removed by the strike. Image: Evan Gora / Cary Institute of Ecosystem Studies It turns out there are advantages to a lightning blast, if you survive. For a start, a lot of your neighbours don’t. The scientists found that a lightning strike on a non-Dipteryx tree removed a lot more leaves than on a Dipteryx. If a tree wasn’t a Dipteryx then it was more likely than not to die in the couple of years following a lightning strike. Instead of losing leaves, Dipteryx lost pests. Lightning killed almost 80% of lianas growing on a Dipteryx tree, removing their closest competitors for light and nutrients. Scientists had previously suspected that some trees evolved to tolerate lightning, but evidence to back it up was lacking. The authors estimate that a Dipteryx gets struck by lightning once every fifty years or so, and can live up to a thousand years. On that timescale, lightning is a regular problem that you have to deal with. On a human timescale it would be like being struck by lightning every four years. Clearly being able to tolerate lightning is an important trait for a tree that wants to survive. It may yet become more important. If a changing climate makes storms more frequent, then lightning may have a big hand in shaping the diversity of forests. In recent years, rapid technological advancements have been reshaping the way we approach animal vaccination. From precision delivery systems to cutting-edge diagnostics, these innovations are not only improving the health and well-being of animals but also revolutionizing the agricultural and veterinary industries.
The Power of Precision Vaccination
One of the most notable changes in the field of animal vaccination is the move towards precision vaccination. Traditionally, vaccines were administered uniformly to entire populations of animals, regardless of individual health status or needs. However, with advancements in technology, we can now tailor vaccines to the specific requirements of each animal.
Precision vaccination relies on data-driven decision-making. Veterinarians and farmers can collect and analyze data about an animal's health, genetics, and environmental factors to determine the most appropriate vaccine regimen. This approach not only ensures that animals receive the right vaccines at the right time but also reduces the overuse of vaccines, lowering costs and minimizing the development of vaccine-resistant strains.
Smart Delivery Systems
Technological innovations have also led to the development of smart delivery systems for vaccines. These systems are designed to improve the effectiveness and safety of vaccine administration. For example, micro-needle patches and wearable devices equipped with sensors can painlessly and precisely deliver vaccines while monitoring the animal's response in real-time. This data can then be transmitted to veterinarians or farmers, allowing for immediate intervention if necessary.
Furthermore, drones equipped with vaccine payloads are being used in large-scale livestock operations. These drones can quickly and efficiently vaccinate animals in remote or hard-to-reach areas, reducing labor costs and ensuring that no animal is left unvaccinated. This technology has proven particularly valuable in addressing disease outbreaks and improving vaccination coverage in developing regions.
Diagnostic Advancements
Accurate diagnosis is fundamental to effective vaccination. Technological advancements in diagnostic tools have greatly enhanced our ability to detect diseases early and tailor vaccination programs accordingly. Molecular diagnostics, such as PCR tests, can identify pathogens with high precision, enabling veterinarians to select the most appropriate vaccines or treatments.
Moreover, the integration of artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning into diagnostic processes has improved the speed and accuracy of disease detection. AI algorithms can analyze vast datasets and identify disease patterns that may be undetectable to the human eye. This not only speeds up the diagnosis process but also enhances our understanding of disease dynamics, helping us develop more effective vaccines.
Competitive Landscape
Prominent manufacturers in the animal vaccines industry are leveraging increasing government support on a global scale to promote animal health. This support has manifested in the development of robust vaccine formulations designed to combat a wide array of pathogens. Additionally, market players are placing a strong emphasis on strategic moves such as mergers, acquisitions, and collaborations to establish a solid foothold in this highly competitive sector.
Here are some noteworthy developments:
Merck & Co., Inc. Acquires IdentiGEN (August 2020): Merck & Co., Inc. successfully completed its acquisition of IdentiGEN in August 2020. IdentiGEN specializes in the study of animal DNA for livestock applications. This strategic move enables Merck to offer complete transparency to food processors, producers, and retailers regarding animal traceability solutions. By ensuring robust traceability, Merck aims to guarantee the availability of high-quality food products for consumers.
Zoetis Inc.'s Approval of SolensiaTM (January 2022): In January 2022, Zoetis Inc. made a significant announcement regarding the approval of SolensiaTM (frunevetmab injection) by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration. SolensiaTM is designed to manage the pain associated with osteoarthritis in cats, ultimately enhancing their mobility, comfort, and overall well-being. This groundbreaking injection operates by specifically targeting the Nerve Growth Factor (NGF), a pivotal driver of osteoarthritis pain.
These developments underscore the dynamic nature of the animal vaccines industry, as leading companies continue to innovate and collaborate in their pursuit of advancements that benefit both animal health and the wider community.

CHAPTER 9.2: THE SAFE HOUSE

And Antwan asked no questions. He cut the wheel to the left and the old SUV crashed through a tall brass hurricane fence as a bolt of golden lightning struck down behind them. The lightning chased them the length of the short pasture and Antwan steered them through a sea of overgrown grass. The Bronco swerved up a small gravely hill and onto the tracks as one last lightning bolt turned the spot behind them to ash.
The cab vibrated as the SUV raced down the railroad tracks. Antwan cursed as the slender lodged her claws in his forearm. He tightened his grip on the wheel as it jerked across the rocky terrain and a terrifying set of yellow lights switched on. A thundering horn sliced through the night air and Antwan fixed his wide eyes on his husband.
“Remember. Keep it steady. It’s not real.” Maxim said. “No matter what. Straight on til midnight.”
Antwan mashed down on the gas. The pulsating lights drew closer, and the terrifying sound of a train reached Maxim’s ears. Antwan fixed his attention on a copper pole jutting out of the gravel up ahead and veered the Bronco left. He snatched his hand in through the window and the slender’s body went still in Maxim’s hands. Antwan pulled the creature’s body across the cab and out of the window before he turned his attention to the mammoth train that stared down at them. Its conductor tugged on the blaring horn and the ear-splitting screech rattled the car. Antwan looked to his husband and smiled.
“Straight on til midnight!” Antwan smiled.
The Bronco zoomed through the middle of the blinding lights and into a dark tunnel. The blaring subsided to a faint ringing in his ears and the SUV hurtled down the dark tunnel. The walls drew closer and the tracks beneath them depressed until Antwan steered them down a steep slope and onto a slab of even, polished concrete.
Antwan eased his foot off the gas and the SUV rumbled to a crawl. They crept along the smooth path of the dimly lit passage until they came to a Cul de sac with two large men stood in front of a violent hangar door. The towering entrance lay closed, and a crop of shimmering paisley prints danced around a circular crest bearing a gorgon’s reptilian hair curling around a stately ‘B.’ The insignia was etched into the door in luminous bronze, and it pulsed with a faint light.
Antwan cajoled the SUV to a stop and the men approached the vehicle. Maxim grabbed Antwan’s itching hand and squeezed it tight.
“Kill the engine.” Maxim whispered.
His husband flipped the key and the headlights faded, and the guns inched toward the. Maxim nodded to Antwan.
“You know where we are.” he whispered. “Calm heads.”
Antwan relaxed his jittering fingers. He nodded back to Maxim, and they crept out of the SUV with their hands raised above their heads. Maxim could see a crop of locs poking out beneath a dingy scar when he tipped his gun to the ground. He motioned for The Sharpes to get on the ground, and they complied. Maxim held his breath as Antwan lowered himself to the ground.
“Invitation?” asked the gun with the locs.
“Backseat.” said Maxim.
“There will be no need for that.” someone announced.
The sultry voice grew louder when the writhing paisley print froze on the impressive violet doors. The hangar doors split down at the center to reveal a slender man in a green tweed jacket. A patch of gray rose against a sea of neatly trimmed, black hair and a well-manicured goatee framed his grimacing lips.
“We’ve been expecting you. After all, it’s not every day that two of your brightest pupils come in from the cold. Together, no less!” His dark voice growled. “Falcon. Raven. Welcome back to Brimmens: School of Espionage!”

Even on the hottest day of summer, coastal mountains like the western Santa Monicas offer a cool alternative. I recently hiked the west end of the Backbone Trail, 11.7 miles round trip.

I parked of the PCH (Pacific Coast Highway) halfway between the exit point from Sycamore Cyn and the trailhead at La Jolla Cyn. Not only did I save the $8 parking fee at the Ray Miller trailhead, I was so ready to climb into my car when I got back to PCH I didn't want to walk the additional 2 miles back to the lot.

I was so eager to start the climb I didn't stop to shoot a photo here, so thanks Google. The paid lot is to the left of the closed gate and the trailhead is to the right. You can see the Backbone Trail climbing all the way to the right.

About 0.75 miles from the trailhead and 400 feet up. Walking a mile from my car to the trailhead was a great warmup. Barely breathing hard at this point and the cool breeze from the Pacific was lovely.

1.5 miles in now and nearly 800' up. What a glorious day!

At 2.7 miles the Backbone Trail merges with the Overlook Fire Road. Much of it is pretty level with gentle rises like this one and dips. Looking toward the high point of the Overlook Rd. for this trip at 1100'. As you can see it's not a very steep climb. The cool ocean breezes kept it very pleasant.

Looking toward the Pacific from 3.4 miles in and 1100' up. This the last we'll see of the ocean until we exit at Sycamore Canyon.

The coastal mountain plains of Point Mugu state park. The cooling effect of the fog stayed most of the way down to Wood Canyon.

About 4.6 miles in the Backbone Trail veers off the fire road and heads down to Wood Canyon for the next leg of the trip. I should point out there were a number of bicyclists and joggers, especially bikers, so be on the lookout for them. Fortunately all the ones I encountered were polite and responsible about passing me.

The Backbone down to Wood Canyon is fairly gentle and even, a gradual descent over 1.8 miles from 910' down to 210' above sea level. Probably twenty cyclists passed me during this leg but the trail was wide enough to give them plenty of room.

The final switchback down into Wood Canyon. That picnic table was a welcome sight. I was pleasantly surprise by what was around the next corner, though.

Here we are at 6.4 miles in and meeting Big Sycamore Creek. I hope you like it because you're going to cross it nine times as you head west down Sycamore Canyon Rd. back to PCH.

Had a nice little rest here. Of course I took notice of the poison oak growing around the tree. There's a fair amount of it: low elevation plus shade plus water equals poison oak. Be mindful!

Sycamore Canyon lives up to its name, 'cause there's lots of them providing welcome patches of shade most of the way back to PCH. Gradually we descend this roadthere are a few mild rises—from 109' to 10' above sea level at PCH.

This is one of the prettiest creek crossings: about the fourth one after that first crossing. After a certain point I stopped hopping across rocks and logs and just waded through the shallowest parts. What's the point of having good boots if you don't trust them to keep your feet dry? Mine did! Asolo boots—love them!

About 9 miles in and there's the 8th crossing. The cyclists really go flying through these things so take care you don't get splashed. We're getting close to the PCH now!

Big Sycamore trailhead and campground at 9.2 miles in. PCH is only 0.4 miles away and only about one more mile to my car. Feeling very good about how well this hike went, save for a few aches and pains in my back. Small price to pay...

Fortunately there's a very wide shoulder on PCH to accommodate cyclists, runners and hikers. Yeah, it's a drag hiking on asphalt and breathing exhaust fumes but the beauty of the ocean makes up for it.
Thanks for coming on this trip with me, virtually speaking.
