Looking for Patterns
Almost forty, yes, forty years ago, I hung out with some people who did research in Artificial Intelligence. I foolishly thought they were thinking along the lines of Isaac Asimov ideas. They depended on their funders to think that way ... while they worked on voice recognition, pattern-matching, and "fuzzy logic" (a loose probability theory with a feedback loop to improve the probability estimate). The frivolous sounding "Fuzzy Logic" gave way to the term machine-learning because it mimics how people learn through repetition and experience. These three general subjects are intertwined. Voice recognition requires picking up on established patterns of sound and definitions. Pattern-matching is the ability of an entity -- human or machine -- to conclude "I've seen/heard this before. I recognize this." What a machine does with that conclusion is up to its programming.
The human mind is both surprisingly similar yet infinitely different from that paradigm. It's why we see faces in electrical sockets and backs of cars -- two eyes and a mouth below. We needed that ability to discern what was running towards us. (Eyes in front -- predator; eyes on the sides -- prey.) We establish patterns.
Here is some chocolate. Chocolate has made me happy before. Yes, please, I will repeat that experience.
Our rational minds organize people patterns of great sophistication and let them coalesce into what Carl Jung referred to as archetypes. If someone says Mother or Warrior or something more modern like Astronaut, we can imagine all sorts of factoids and assumptions immediately.
The human brain is set-up to match-patterns ... and tell stories. In some ways, these two skills are two sides of the same coin. We are constantly telling ourselves stories. While brushing your teeth, you rehearse what you're planning to say to your boss. You imagine a scene -- her office? the parking lot? in the elevator? You imagine your feelings -- calm and collected? angry? nervous? You imagine her reaction -- irritated? dismissive? congratulatory? We build the story to help us think.
We make assumptions and predictions based on memory and experience then play them out on the platform of our imagination, guided by our current understanding of the situation. Really, it's pattern-matching and storytelling.
Human beings, on average, can recall strings of numerals only to about 7 digits in length. Consider phone numbers which use to get memorized all the time -- you have to care about 10 digits now. So, we start the story, "She used to live in Santa Cruz -- 831. I remember her number, 867-5309." Music, in that case, helps for sure. Our musical memory by the way is a great pattern-matching feat. (Memories associated with music are so sticky because they are "stored" in more places in the brain. They are recollected upon rehearing just a snippet more swiftly because the patterns match.)
What does this have to do with the novel-publishing journey? I can't recall at the moment. It's late and I'm on a road trip with my husband to a wedding. Hopefully, I can weave it all together tomorrow.
It might have something to do with how irritating is it to hear so much panic over AI because the average person is imagining the AI of Asimov. At this point, it's pattern-matching software and machine-learning programming. Those things would be great to remove the mundane and repetitive tasks -- the mind-numbing tasks of modern life -- freeing up time for us to create stories that matter, to inspire and support each other.
Or maybe it's just because doing a callback at the end of an essay is a good pattern I've noticed.

So. Okay. I use my personal computer for work. This is not an ideal situation, and it's a holdover from Gary refusing to buy work computers for anyone when we went remote. I do not recommend this. You should not do this. If you are a business, you should not allow your employees to do this. It's a security issue for you and for your employer and is, all around, a bad idea.
My company installs an RMM agent (a program that lets us remotely manage the device and to view the screen in certain circumstances) on all of our client computers; you need the agent to do some server access stuff, so sometimes I have to have the RMM agent on my computer and get joined to our environment. When I'm done doing whatever it is, I uninstall the agent because I don't want my boss to have remote control software on my personal device. If you are using your personal computer at work, you should not allow your employer to maintain remote control software on your personal device.
My computer has a dorky name. I usually name my computers dorky things. This one is called Atredies and the last one was Gandalf and the one before that was Hende Nicholas and the one before that was Robocop. This, notably, does not match our office's pattern of "BN-1508," or even Gary's standard of "Work-Related-Concept" ("Shipping") or "First Name" ("Maddy") for naming our office computers. So sometimes I'll be sitting in the virtual office and someone will look up from doing device approvals and will say "What company has a desktop named Atredies" and I'll be like "us, the sleeper has awakened, let me on" and everyone is like hey Alli you're a huge dork and I'm like yeah.
So here's the thing. You should not be using your personal computer as a work computer. If you are using your personal computer as a work computer, you should not allow your employer to leave control programs installed on the device. If you do have control programs on the device, it's good to make sure that your computer is VERY VERY VERY identifiably *not* a computer owned by your employer. If your employer gave you an old computer that was being decommissioned, you should make sure to do a fresh OS install and you should make sure to rename the machine something that will make it easy to see it's your machine.
This post is brought to you by the lady whose gifted-from-her-job 12 year old laptop named "WP-1644" we just bricked because the client didn't maintain an inventory list and when they couldn't identify the user they decided it was stolen.

Fan Wars: KWON JI-YONG x READER
summary: after managing to keep your relationship with ji-yong private, fans catch wind of potential evidence and refuse to let it go, so he decides to give them something real to talk about...
word count: 1341
tags: smau; fluff, established relationship, sneaking around, making out in semi public
Tumblr media
You had done everything right.
Separate exits. Baggy hoodies. Sunglasses even though the sun had long set. Taking the longest possible route back to the car. And yet, here you were, sitting on Ji-yong’s couch with your phone blowing up, as the internet lost its collective mind.
“Ohhh, they are going insane,” Ji-yong muttered, scrolling through Twitter with an amused smirk.
You buried your face in a pillow. “I don’t wanna know.”
“No, but you have to.” He turned his phone toward you. “They’re dissecting everything.”
You peeked over the pillow hesitantly… only to immediately regret it.
Tumblr media
User: I swear I just saw GD at this tiny restaurant… and he wasn’t alone 👀👀
User: Okay. So. Evidence thread 🧵⬇️
This blurry ass video from tonight? Yeah. That’s DEFINITELY G-Dragon.
The person next to him? I compared their walking pattern to Y/N’s past airport footage. IT MATCHES.
In the video, Ji-yong laughs. I ran it through software that compares audio frequencies. IT’S HIM.
The hoodie he’s wearing? He posted it on Insta a month ago. Y/N had a suspiciously similar background in her IG story the SAME DAY.
User: IT’S REAL!!
YGFamily_Updates: 🚨 Some fans are convinced G-Dragon is dating Y/N after being spotted together tonight. Others refuse to believe it. What do you think?
User: that should’ve been me </3
User: He could do waayyy better…

User: am I the only one who thought he was gay??
User: SHE'S NOT WUH LUH WUH???? NOOOOO </33

User: y'all are insane...
Tumblr media
As much as you want to hide, you can’t seem to take your eyes off his phone. Not even when he continues scrolling through the battle of the fandoms to stumble across some diehard fans trying to piece together more of the timeline.
That one interview from three years ago where Ji-yong was asked about his ideal type, and he gave a vague answer that suddenly sounds a lot like you. A music award show from an entire decade ago where he held the mic for you and fans swore he was looking at you differently. One year ago – a rehearsal clip where you and Ji-yong were standing next to each other, not even talking, but somehow that was now evidence.
“They’ve gone too deep,” you groaned, finally managing to tear your eyes away.
Ji-yong chuckled, continuing to scroll, while he wraps his other arm around you, pulling you into his side. “They always do.”
“How are you so calm about this?” You turned to face him fully. “Half of your fanbase is ready to burn me at the stake, and the other half thinks I’m too good for you.”
He smirked. “Sounds balanced to me.”
You shoved him. “Ji-yong.”
He caught your wrist easily, pulling you closer until you were practically nose-to-nose. His voice softened. “Jagiya, it’s okay.”
Your lips pressed into a tight line. “What if this doesn’t blow over? What if they keep digging?”
He exhaled, brushing his fingers through your hair. “Then let them.” His tone was steady, unwavering. “We don’t owe anyone an explanation. They can talk all they want—we know what’s real.”
You searched his eyes, finding nothing but warmth and certainty. The tension in your chest loosened, just a little.
“…You’re really not worried?”
He smiled. “No.”
You hesitated. “You’re not gonna post anything cryptic and make it worse?”
Ji-yong laughed. “Tempting. Very tempting. But no.” He kissed your forehead, lingering there for a second. “I just want you to feel safe.”
Your heart melted. You sighed, relaxing into him. “You’re really annoying, you know that?”
“And yet,” he murmured, his lips grazing yours, “here you are.”
Outside, the internet burned. Inside, you were home.
That was, at least, until your next event.
You knew from the moment you stepped onto that damn red carpet that tonight was going to be hell. The flashing cameras. The way certain interviewers perked up when they saw you. The way the entire internet had spent the past three weeks analyzing your every move, convinced that your so-called “secret relationship” with G-Dragon was either a definite reality or the greatest fan delusion of the decade. And now? Now you were both in the same room. At the same event. With hundreds of thousands of eyes watching.
You had never been more aware of your own facial expressions in your entire life. Every breath, every blink, every slight movement of your lips—someone was watching.
Across the room, Ji-yong sat with Seung-hyun, Youngbae, and Daesung. Not even they knew his real relationship status, while the man in question was completely unbothered, sipping his drink like he wasn’t currently the center of a full-blown fan war.
Seung-hyun tilted his glass toward him. “So… are you gonna acknowledge her tonight?”
Ji-yong smirked. “Who?”
Seung-hyun let out a slow breath. “God, you’re insufferable.”
Daesung, who had been watching you like a hawk for the past ten minutes, leaned in. “Okay, but why hasn’t she looked at you even once?”
Youngbae scoffed. “Because she knows people are watching.”
Seung-hyun nodded. “Which only makes it more suspicious.”
Ji-yong just swirled his drink, looking far too entertained. “You guys think too much,” he mused.
“And you think too little about how insane you make people.”
Ji-yong just smiled in response before pulling out his phone.
Slowly, carefully, you glance down.
A message. From Ji-yong.
You hesitate. You know cameras are on you right now. You know people will read into whatever expression you make. You know that someone will try to zoom in on your screen. But still…
Tumblr media Tumblr media
You freeze. Before you can stop yourself, your eyes flicker across the room and meet his. It’s only for half a second. A single heartbeat. A blink. But it’s enough. Because he sees you and, to make it worse, he smirks.
After that split second of eye contact, Ji-yong tilts his head ever so slightly. A silent invitation.
You swallow. Pretending to check your phone, you slip out of your seat and disappear into the dimly lit hallway. As much as you really shouldn’t be doing this, you can’t help the way your heart’s pounding with excitement, fluttering at the thought of being sneaky like this. Then— A hand grabs your wrist. Ji-yong pulls you into a darkened corridor.
“I’m not sure this is a good idea,” you whisper, peeking up at him.
“And yet, here you are.” Before you can retort, his fingers graze your wrist, trailing up your arm slowly, deliberately. His touch leaves a trail of fire in its wake. “You look too good tonight,” he murmurs, voice husky.
“Ji-yong—”
“I’ve been wanting to do this all night,” he interrupts.
He moves you backwards, pressing you against the wall behind you, and his mouth finds yours. It’s slow at first; teasing, testing your patience. But your hands instinctively reach up to grab his jacket, pulling him closer, and his own restraint is thrown out the window. He loses it. His own hands slide over your waist, gripping, exploring, pressing you firmly against him. His lips move against yours with urgency, hunger.
“Missed you,” he mutters between kisses, trailing down your jaw, your neck. His breath is hot, his hands possessive.
Your fingers tangle in his hair, and he groans.
“You’re gonna get us caught,” you whisper breathlessly.
Ji-yong laughs softly, kissing you again. “Let them.”
You shudder. Your hands clutch his blazer, pulling him back up, crashing your lips to his in another heated kiss. This time, he’s the one who shudders. His hands roam lower, tighter, needier. And just as he presses even closer—
A loud camera shutter clicks.

Happy Batman day! Went back and finished the last batch of the MLP AU I had sketched way back in May.
Part 1, Part 2
More info under the cut!
Enigma/The Riddler (Edward Nygma)
Intelligence and puzzle-solving are deeply valued among sphinxes, and those who fall short of their standards are often ridiculed and cast out. Among some (prejudiced) Sphinxes, other sapient, non-Sphinx species such as ponies are looked down-upon or seen as fundamentally inferior for not putting as much stock in puzzles and the like as sphinxes do.
Enigma, though considered a prodigy for his remarkable intelligence and skill with puzzles even among his fellow Sphinxes, was ostracized when a pony unfamiliar with Sphinx culture (a younger Sundown traveling Equestria for his training), humiliated Enigma by unraveling a puzzle of his that was meant to be judged as his final submission in a prestigious event, permanently staining his reputation and wounding his massive ego.
After years of quiet ridicule from his peers and his own growing obsession over the event, Enigma eventually snapped and fled to Gotham for revenge. His contempt has since spread far beyond that of the original pony he wished to prove his superiority over, and he now makes all of Gotham the target of his obsessive schemes, constantly trying to prove his superiority and feed his ego by putting ponies through his elaborate puzzles and riddle-based traps. He sees Batpony’s skill and determination in foiling him as both an inherent challenge to and a slight against his own abilities, reminding him far too much of that original pony from so long ago.
Other notes:
-Apparently sphinxes in MLP have pony heads instead of human heads which makes sense I guess but it threw me through such a loop man.
-Whilst traversing the wiki I ended up with the same problem I had with chimeras in the first post where only one ever shows up in the series and there's no other info on them. So I made stuff up again.
- I imagine Sphinxes live a very long time, so the event Enigma was embarrassed at would probably take a long time to roll around again and he'd be forced to stew with his anger and wounded ego for far too long. I'm not sure what the puzzle was exactly or how Sundown dismantled it, but I imagine he did something extremely simple that a Sphinx would never have thought of (a la that software engineering joke), making it feel far more unfair and humiliating than if he'd solved in the intended way.
-His naturally crooked tail settles into the shape of a question mark, and the pattern on his arm is meant to look like a stylized question mark wrapping around his forearm (the "dot" is the white of his paw).
2. Miss Friday (Miss Tuesday)
Enigma’s teenaged assistant, Miss Friday seems to be the only pony the sphinx enjoys (or perhaps simply tolerates) the company of. Beyond her having met Enigma in Tartarus during their simultaneous imprisonments, the exact origins of her relationship to and exceptional status with her boss are a bit of a riddle in of themselves. Regardless, the two seem to have something of a mutual understanding, and Miss Friday’s mental prowess and dubious moral code are more than a match for Enigma’s own.
Other Notes:
-Yes this is a "The horse's name was Friday" joke. I'm sorry it was just too good to pass up.
-Miss Tuesday already sounded like a MLP name, but the horse named Friday thing was just too perfect for somebody who works under a guy who's whole thing is riddles. Also I relistened to the BTAA episode where she's introduced while coloring her and I noticed they reference His Girl Friday several times, so fun coincidence?
-The candy-striped leg patterns are based on her canon costume's striped pants & are meant to mirror the Riddler's wrapped leg pattern. The dark patterns on her face are supposed to be reminiscent of eye bags.
3. Mania (Bat-Mite)
Bat-Pony’s self-proclaimed biggest fan, Mania is a Draconequus embodying the spirit of obsession. Normally he watches the hero from his own dimension, but at times he tries to insert himself into the narrative or help Sundown fight, both to varying degrees of success. Though he genuinely adores Bat-Pony, Mania is usually more of a hindrance than a help, and can even be directly antagonistic at times when his obsession goes too far.
Other notes:
-Similar issue to Chimeras and Sphinxes, only two Draconequuses (Draconequui?) show up in the series, one being Discord (embodying chaos), the other being a comics-only villain known as Cosmos (embodying malice), but honestly what little we're given worked super well for the character anyway. Discord seems to come from his own unique plane of existence/dimension and Cosmos has similarly strange origins; both have penchants for causing mischief with incredible reality-warping powers; and both embody non-physical concepts. Bat-Mite being a reality warping 5th dimensional creature obsessed with Batman was surprisingly easy to adapt.
-He has the head of a pony, a ferret-like body, two front rat paws, mite antennae, an insectoid wing, a bat wing, a pigeon foot, a chevrotain (mouse deer) foot, and a monkey tail. I tried to have him mostly made up of animals that were very small, seen as mischievous, and/or seen as pests.
4. Poison Ivy (Pamela Isley)
Said to be more plant than pony, Poison Ivy is the self-proclaimed princess of the Green. Though once a regular Earth pony, she began to spiral after receiving her cutie mark and fully coming into her powerful natural attunement to plant life. Fleeing into the nearby forests on the outskirts of Gotham, she wasn’t seen again until many years later when Gotham’s city refurbishment and expansion efforts began to encroach on the forests borders, where she reemerged with strange new powerful magic and retaliated violently.
Though she isn’t recognized politically or physically as an alicorn, plants grow from the flesh of her body in the pattern of a horn and wings characteristic of those born into or bestowed with royalty, and the strange natural magic that accompanies them seems to almost rival that of a true alicorn’s.
Other notes:
-I dont really have anything to add to this one I just thought a false alicorn would be a cool concept.
-the whole alicorn royalty thing is very strange to think about isnt it? I feel like the ruling class having such insane amounts of physical and magical power probably has much more pressing ramifications than ever was, would, or should be addressed in a kids show but they are fun to think about.
-Her actual name is Poison Ivy, yes. It sounded like a pony name. I don't know what that says about her parents.
-The leaf wings are folded down in the graphic but I think they are flighted, or at the very least useful for gliding and expressing emotions.
5. Saltbrine (Oswald Cobblepot)
Short, stout, and flightless, Saltbrine’s moniker of “The Penguin” has its origins in the taunts of his peers from his youth. Though the title has persisted into the current day, it’s often spoken with far more fear and trepidation throughout the alleys and backstreets of Gotham than ridicule. Saltbrine owns two of Gothams most well-known businesses, one being the luxurious, high-class Iceberg Lounge…and the other being the organized crime syndicate the former acts as a front for.
Other notes:
-Again don't have much to add to this one. One of my favorite designs though, I love the giant beak face.
-The bird half is actually based on a puffin, because a penguin felt too on the nose for Oswald and too strange for a hippogriff (I couldn't get the wings or face to look right at all either). I feel like the title being an insult works a little better if he's not literally half-penguin.
-he's the same color my club penguin avatar used to be (RIP)

BlueLock boys with a hacker significant other? Say less babe.
For ✨this✨ request, thanks anon ❤️😭
Featuring: Isagi, Rin, Bachira, Sae, and Baro
Tumblr media
✨Chigiri, Nagi, Kunigami, Shido, and Oliver here✨
Tumblr media
💚Yoichi Isagi💚
Isagi is stressed. He’s over there pacing and over analyzing the formations his team will be playing in an upcoming match and mumbling about how they’ll probably lose if their striker keeps favoring his left. You’re cuddled up nearby on the couch, calm as ever.
“Mmm. You’ll be fine, Yoichi. The other team’s ace always pulls a hamstring when he overextends. He’s got scar tissue from a previous tear. It flares up when he’s stressed. Don’t worry.”
He stops pacing, looking at you confused, “… how do you know that?”
You blink at him innocently, “Oh. I read it in his physical therapy records.”
His jaw drops. “His what now?”
“His physical therapy records.”
Turns out, you’ve been quietly feeding him subtle intel for months. You just never thought to mention the whole “I’m a black-market information broker and top-tier hacker with encrypted deals across half of Japan’s underworld and media outlets.”
Isagi is half horrified and half stupidly in love.
“You hacked into… his medical records… for me?”
“Well yeah, babe. You were worried.” 🥺
He pulls you into a hug like, “I don’t deserve you but I’m never letting you go.”
😐Rin Itoshi😐
Rin is in that broody, pre-match mode he gets into. He’s scrolling match stats and muttering about the foreign midfielder on the other team being unreadable.
You’re standing in the kitchen buttering some toast, “he’s not unreadable, Rinnie. His footwork gets sloppy if he’s stressed. Like when his side mirror got knocked off, or when he got pulled over for speeding. I’ve seen it in the traffic cam footage and it directly correlates to that man’s playing style.”
Rin blinks, lifting his head up to stare at you, “… what traffic cam footage?”
“The one from his home city. Don’t worry, he’ll be benched. He’s got a court summons next week for reckless driving.” 🙂
You go back to buttering your toast, and Rin stares at you like you’ve grown horns.
He’s very quiet for a few minutes. Processing. Calculating the danger of ever cheating on you (he wouldn’t, but STILL). Then he nods once and says, “you’re dangerous. I like that.”
He’s weirdly proud of the fact that you’re lowkey terrifying.
😄Meguru Bachira😄
He’s bouncing on your couch, mid-rant about how “that one defender with the annoying nose” always reads his movements like a psychic. You’re beside him, playing with your phone.
“Oh, that’s because he watches your footwork clips on 0.5x speed and runs eye-tracking software to simulate your dribbling patterns.”
Bachira stops, and stares at you, “…what?”
“I found the program installed on his gaming laptop. It’s low-tier but clever. I upgraded his code and left him a little message in it.”
He grabs your phone like it’s possessed, “what kind of message?”
You grin, “I programmed your monster into the UI. It screeches every time he opens the program.”
Bachira ABSOLUTELY loses his mind, in a good way.
He’s now clinging to you like a koala, shouting, “YOU’RE SO COOL!”
Later, he’s like, “Babe. Babe. Can you make a program that growls at Rin everytime he walks by me??”
You have no idea if you’re helping or enabling, but hey, he’s thriving. (And he also think you could steal the moon if you actually applied yourself)
❤️Sae Itoshi❤️
You’re stretching with him pre-game and he’s watching footage of a rival player as you do. It’s become routine, what isn’t routine is what you casually rattle off, “He’s all right. Wouldn’t trust him though. Tax fraud in ‘22. Media buried it. If he gets MVP, the payout will be laundered through his uncle’s company again.”
Sae stops mid stretch, but doesn’t look at you, processing, “… you tracked his family finances?”
You shrug, picking up your phone and tapping away at it, “I track everyone. Want to know if your manager actually forwarded that bonus check or kept it for himself?”
Sae is amused. Slightly terrified. Leans over to kiss your temple and mutters, “Remind me to never piss you off.”
He loves the idea that his girlfriend is this genius level hacker playing puppetmaster behind the scenes. He starts asking you for help on contracts. On brand deals. Maybe a little too enthusiastically.
👑Shoei Barou👑
Barou’s been brooding in the kitchen, grumbling about how some striker keeps faking out the defense. You come in, sipping a smoothie, “He uses the same plant foot every time. Can’t pivot right, old ankle fracture. Rehabbed poorly.”
Barou just grunts at you, so you add, “I have the x-rays if you want it.”
Barou chokes on his protein shake, “THE FUCK?!”
You show him your phone, swipe to the folder titled “⚽ Idiots” and scroll through a disturbing amount of dossiers on old Blue Lock players, coaches, rival teams, and several politicians.
He crosses his arm, glares, “Tch. Fine. But if anyone asks, I got that intel on my own.”
He’ll come back 20 minutes later asking if you can hack into a dietician’s files because he’s pretty sure his nutritionist is lying.

Apologies for taking an extra week to get this to you all-as promised, here is the Pokemon Mystery Dungeon interview featured in the April 6th, 2007 issue of Weekly Famitsu with Tsunekazu Ishihara and Koichi Nakamura!
I'll have another Pokemon Mystery Dungeon interview translation in the works soon so stay tuned 👀
Page 1:

Pokémon x Mystey Dungeon = ∞ Infinite
A new world view thought of by Tsunekazu Ishihara and Koichi Nakamura
Pokémon and Mystery Dungeon... The two completely different worlds were merged to give birth to an unexpected monster of a game. I was able to interview the two key figures about the popularity and secrets of Pokémon Mystery Dungeon, which has exceeded 5.5 million in sales worldwide.
On November 17th, 2005, the Pokémon released Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Blue Rescue Team (Nintendo DS) and Red Rescue Team (Game Boy Advance)*1, exceeded total world-wide shipments of 5.5 million. The meeting between Pokémon, beloved by children all over the world, and Mystery Dungeon, known for its hard, unforgiving gameplay, caused a powerful chemical reaction, giving birth to a new world known as Pokémon Mystery Dungeon. But how did these two games, which should surely reject each other, manage this miraculous fusion?
I was able to have a long talk with the father of Pokémon, Tsunekazu Ishihara, and Koichi Nakamura from Chunsoft, who created Mystery Dungeon, and hear their secrets. Eventually, our conversation even extended to the Pokémon Mystery Dungeon sequel!
Altering the world to match the core of the game
Pokémon Mystery Dungeon has now exceeded 5.5 million. This really is an incredible number. Have you analyzed the reason for its success?
Ishihara: There is a pattern when it comes to Pokémon titles that are a hit worldwide. The sales ratio for Japan, North America and Europe start at 1:1:1. This time, we were able to replicate this pattern very well with Pokémon Mystery Dungeon. If it starts with this ratio, then the ratio for North America and Europe will increase, as there is a greater tendency for software to continue selling in those places compared to Japan. And so I think this 5.5 million number is a single waypoint.
And how do you view it, Nakamura-san?
Nakamura: I have also been involved in the production of Dragon Quest, but even then, I have never had the experience of selling 5.5 million copies worldwide with a single title before. It is a big number that really shows that people around the world are playing it. So as a creator, I could not be more happier.
For people currently in their 30s and 40s, I think that Dragon Quest would be the first game that showed them the ‘impact of a story.’ But these days, a child’s first game with a story would be Pokémon. The Dragon Quest phenomenon that occurred in Japan is now happening on a worldwide scale with Pokémon. I believe that creating games that ‘appeal to every market’ has been your lifework, Ishihara-san. What is your secret?
Ishihara: North America, Europe, Asia and other regions… I think that every market is incredibly unique and different in terms of what is accepted. With that being said, if we were to remake every game for every market, I doubt we would have been able to circulate this far and wide. For instance, the Pokémon called Pikachu is also Pikachu all over the world. The gameplay elements, the Pokémon trading system, the parts that are the core of the game are all shared. If we tried remaking them for each market, it would have crumbled eventually.
Previously, you have said, ‘There is no point in being fun if it is not fun all over the world.’ I suppose that applies here.

Glossary
*1 Blue Rescue Team and Red Rescue Team
Released on separate hardware, Nintendo DS and Game Boy Advance. The system of the player becoming the Pokémon and exploring a ‘Mystery Dungeon’ with other Pokémon attracted a lot of attention. The ‘Help a Friend’ system that allowed you to use an internet connection to help friends who fell in the dungeon was also quite innovative.
*2 Diamond and Pearl
The ultimate Pokémon games that were released on the Nintendo DS and sold nearly 5 million copies in Japan alone. While they came out on September 28th, 2006, momentum has not slowed down for these monster titles.
*3 Global Trade Station
A system from Diamond and Pearl that allowed players to trade Pokémon with other players around the country through Wi-Fi, even if they were not registered through friend codes.
(Interview continued)
Ishihara: I’ve operated with the mindset of, ‘What should I do to have the finished product be something that can be enjoyed all around the world?’ With Diamond and Pearl, *2 you were able to trade Pokémon with other players around the world through the Global Trade Station *3. However, if the content of the software that was circulating in each market was too different, it would not allow for any proper trading. On the other hand, I do think it’s important to enjoy ‘small differences.’ Just like with the first generation Pokémon, where different Pokémon appeared in Red and Green. But if the differences become too big, then it no longer feels like you’re enjoying it with everyone. This feeling is the same as an internet browser. The basic OS is the same, only localized for every territory. But we can use the same browser to see the same sites.
It was then that you encountered Mystery Dungeon. It must have looked quite strange, coming from the world of Pokémon.
Nakamura: Just as he’s said already, Ishihara-san is very particular when it comes to the world of Pokémon. But first and foremost, Ishihara-san is a genuine game fanatic. What I mean to say is, even with such a fixation on the world, he still allows the gameplay to be the priority. He prioritizes the essence of what makes a game fun, and is very tolerant of certain rule changes in regards to the Pokémon world. For instance, you know how the Pokémon talk, or how the player is a Pokémon in Pokémon Mystery Dungeon? This had not been done in the series before, and is a very big change to the rules, but he reacted with incredible flexibility.
These rule changes. Were they ‘acceptable’ with the Pokémon world?
Ishihara: The things that others might say should not happen, are not really that big of a problem for me (laughs). Instead of that, I think it’s much more important to be faithful in conveying the fun of computer games, or rather, the ‘structure of fun.’
I see…
Ishihara: In Mystery Dungeon, the map is automatically generated, you can write what you want on scrolls and use them. It is a game with a very traditional computer game structure. Pokémon is the same. After all, the foundation of networking and trading was demonstrated 10 years ago. These two series have proven that ‘Playing with a computer is so fun!’ And if the two were combined, then it would result in a game that is even more fun. And so even if Pikachu starts talking, I don’t mind it at all (laughs). If anything, it’s fun to think of how you can make such an idea ‘acceptable.’
That’s an incredibly flexible way of thinking.
Ishihara: When it comes to great ‘gameplay’ that is along the lines of the traditional, I would very much like to increase the fun through multiplication. Because of that, there was meaning and value to creating something new with Mystery Dungeon and Nakamura-san.
[← Tsunekazu Ishihara and Koichi Nakamura…
With exceptional talent as producers and creatives, the two are treasures within the Japanese game industry. What lies ahead of where they are looking… What new ‘experience’ will it be, that uses that catalyst called ‘gaming’?]
Page 3:
Pokémon and Mystery Dungeon exist as a mechanism to create fun…
Ishihara: I think there is also compatibility. Between games.
Was that something that you had already felt? That Pokémon and Mystery Dungeon were compatible?
Ishihara: Indeed. Also, I just happened to like them personally (Laughs).
I heard that you are a big fan of Mystery Dungeon.
Ishihara: After all, I consider myself a Mystery Dungeon professional (Laughs).
Everyone (Bursts into laughter)
Nakamura-san, do you also feel the same way as Ishihara-san?
Nakamura: When the possibility was first brought up to me, I did feel that they were greatly suited for each other, as Pokémon has a lot of characters, a lot of tools and different kinds of skills. But on the other hand, Mystery Dungeon has a high difficulty level, and a game system that is quite hands-off with the player. Would it really be able to fuse with a game that is beloved by children…? I did have some doubts.
Ah, that’s true…
Nakamura: But judging by the surveys gathered from people around the world who have played the game, while many had the opinion that it was ‘difficult,’ they were all able to finish it. I’ve always believed that the ideal form of a game is when you have a person who thinks they are the only one in their class who can beat it, but actually everyone can… It is that balance. And I think that with Pokémon Mystery Dungeon, we were able to get incredibly close to achieving that balance.
It seems like a difficult adjustment to make…
Nakamura: In Japan, there might be certain immunity or a foundation for playing, due to Torneko and Shiren. But they don’t have those in other countries, so I was anxious about whether it would be well-received or not. But the results were… Well, that’s the power of Pokémon for you (Laughs).
They were a good match in the end.
Nakamura: Looking back, I really do think it was a wonderful encounter.
The sequel is also in development!
2 games on Nintendo DS
After the game has become such a worldwide hit, I cannot help but ask about the next game…
Ishihara: We’ve actually been working on the next game for quite some time. It will be for Nintendo DS hardware.
Ohh! Previously, you released one game for DS and Advance respectively. How will it be this time?
Ishihara: 2 on the DS.
Ohhh! When did development begin?
Nakamura: A very long time ago (Laughs).
Ishihara: We are developing it with the hope of releasing it in 2007.
That is not very far away!
Ishihara: Yes. So we wouldn’t finish it in time if we had just started now, right? (Laughs)
Well, that is what Ishihara-san says, but how are things at your place, Nakamura-san…?
Nakamura: The situation is quite hectic, of course (Awkward laugh).
Did you always plan to make sequels?
Ishihara: No. It would be difficult to do until you felt confident in the first game. A big part of it was that the reception abroad was better than expected.
What was the reason you chose to release both games on the DS?
Ishihara: When the previous game first went on sale, it was the perfect time, as the leading platform was switching from the Game Boy Advance to the DS. But the situation has changed completely in just one year. When deciding to release two different types, we had to discuss which hardware to choose, and there were even some suggestions of ‘Why not DS and Wii?’ (Laughs). But considering the current market and development environment, we felt it would be best to have both released and played on the DS.
How was it as a creator? Releasing only on the DS.
[Check ‘Pokémon Mystery Dungeon’ anime to be streamed!
Pokémon Mystery Dungeon became an anime in North America, and recorded incredibly high viewership. Since Pokémon Mystery Dungeon plays differently from previous Pokémon, and it takes place in a new setting where the Pokémon can talk, Ishihara explained that it was made with the intent of being an ‘orientation.’
In fact, this anime is to be released in Japan as well. It will commemorate the release of the new sequel mentioned in this interview, and be available on March 23. The episodes will be streamed exclusively on Yahoo!. Let’s enjoy the unique world of the Pokémon Mystery Dungeon series through the anime.
↑ You are guaranteed to be able to see a new side to these Pokémon. Fans should not miss it!]
By combing the two
You can play in this many new ways
Page 4:
Nakamura: With the previous games, we were forced to create them in a way that accommodated the inferior capabilities of the Advance. But since both will be on the DS this time, we can incorporate ideas involving the dual screens as much as we wish.
It sounds like there will be a lot of new elements.
Nakamura: That’s right. In particular, as we can create it on the basis of there being Wi-Fi support, aside from the ‘Help a Friend’ system from the previous game, we are putting even more effort into having that feeling of ‘playing with everyone.’
Specifically, what kinds of elements are being added?
Nakamura: I can’t say (Awkward laugh).
Will Pokémon from Diamond and Pearl be included?
Ishihara: Of course, they will be. Not only that, as simply being put in without a solid role would be meaningless. So please look forward to that. Also, one thing that I can say is in regards to the question of ‘releasing two types?’ If there are two dungeons, then the two games will be slightly different… Well, I am still discussing various things with Nakamura-san (Laughs).
Wh-what do you mean?
Nakamura: For instance. This is an example, alright? Even if it’s the same dungeon, if the items you pick up are different, then it would affect the way you finish the game, or what strategies you use. …Well, that is just an example (Laughs).
It would be a very big difference for Mystery Dungeon!
Ishihara: Originally, in Pokémon games, the gap between Pokémon was a gap in playing. In other words, it dictated the direction of the game. In Mystery Dungeon, the acquiring of items has been added to that. I think that things like that will become the great difference between the two sequels.
With the sequel, as far as you are able to say at this time, can you tell us what point you want players to focus on the most?
Nakamura: For the previous games, we received a lot of feedback about how the scenarios and story parts were incredibly interesting. And so we are consciously trying to create a game with a substantial story that surpasses the previous games and be a more enjoyable adventure. An even longer story is waiting for you.
Ishihara: In regards to the amount of story, there were many different opinions. We thought that we had incorporated a great amount of it, but there were still people who said there ‘wasn’t enough.’ And so we thought, ‘what wasn’t there enough of…’
In the previous game, after you see the ending and closing credits, quite a lot of elements are unlocked. But expanding on things like controls and character selection may have made the partner relationship between the player and the Pokémon feel a little more distant. That was the conclusion I reached after analyzing it. This time, we mean to create the story while taking that into account.
Always be bold towards things that seem traditional!
Lastly, in regards to future developments. It seems like Pokémon will continue to develop in many different directions.
Ishihara: There are plenty of ideas when it comes to simply expanding the license. However, when you find themes or mechanisms that make you wish to collaborate in some form, like Mystery Dungeon, it is very helpful. In fact, there is no meaning in making something new without that relationship. Once you realize you can combine two things to create a new way to play, as we did with this game, it makes you want to try out many other different things too. When it comes to things that are considered traditional with video games, I would like to be bold at all times.
Nakamura-san. Mystery Dungeon turned out to be an incredibly good game. Has this experience made you want to try out anything in the future?
Nakamura: The DS has complete network capabilities now, so I believe that it’s time to start focusing on that. With Wi-Fi taken into consideration, I think some interesting things could be done with Mystery Dungeon. I have all kinds of ideas.
Ishihara: There is something that both Pokémon fans and Mystery Dungeon fans can look forward to the most this year, and that is these two games. Whether it's the gameplay or the expanding world of Pokémon, I hope that they are looking forward to it.
Nakamura: I feel like I’m being pressured (Laughs). As Ishihara-san said, we will create something that won’t disappoint fans, so please look forward to it.
[Notes after editing]
The moment that I saw Tsunekazu Ishihara and Koichi Nakamura sitting together, I felt goosebumps all over my body. And then the two spoke directly of the worldwide hit, Pokémon Mystery Dungeon. I could not help but think about how it was such a privilege, and somewhat forgot about my work.
Pokémon Mystery Dungeon was created from this meeting between the two, and while listening to them, I nodded with an ‘I see,’ many times. At a glance, the two worlds might seem to oppose each other, but with Ishihara’s flexible stance, and the technical ability of Chunsoft led by Nakamura, I think that the creation of a balanced game that was a hit on a worldwide scale was not so much ‘miraculous,’ but ‘inevitable.’ I have great expectations for the sequel, which is said to be released in 2007. Geniuses don’t stop. (O)

Excerpt from this story from Smithsonian Magazine:
An ambitious humpback whale is making waves in the marine biology community after researchers discovered he undertook an incredible 8,106-mile swim across the globe, likely to be the longest distance traveled for the species on record.
This odyssey was “truly impressive and unusual, even for this highly migratory species,” Ekaterina Kalashnikova, a whale researcher at the Bazaruto Center for Scientific Studies and lead author of a study published Wednesday in Royal Society Open Science that tracked the whale’s movements, tells Helen Briggs of the BBC.
Humpback whales are by no means sedentary. According to the study, they “undertake one of the longest known seasonal migrations of all mammals.” However, their migration routes tend to go “between latitudes,” traversing north and south to seek out feeding grounds in colder climates and breeding grounds near the tropics. Rarely do groups of humpback whales go from east to west, preventing them from encroaching on other whales’ territories.
That made it all the more surprising when Kalashnikova and her fellow researchers determined that the same humpback whale was spotted off the Pacific coast of Colombia in 2013 and 2017 before reaching Zanzibar, in the Indian Ocean, in 2022. The whale’s exact route between these endpoints is unknown, but he might have dipped south to Antarctica before tracking back up Africa’s eastern coast, which would extend his route even longer than 8,106 miles.
The discovery was enabled by a citizen science website called Happywhale.com that allows professional biologists and casual whale watchers alike to upload photographs of a whale’s tale, also known as its fluke. Distinct marks, patterns, pigments and scars all contribute to making each whale’s fluke one of a kind. Modified facial recognition software using artificial intelligence matches up distinct features that form a “flukeprint,” as distinct and recognizable as a human fingerprint or face.

Fresno Nightcrawler Houndstooth // Fabric Design for @shapeshiftersvt and The Cryptid Collection
Remember way back a few weeks ago when I posted the Squonk poster and I said that once I'd designed the fabric to go along with it I'd start posting the fabric designs here? Well guess what! It's time!
For those who don't remember or who didn't know, I am the co-owner, site manager, and graphic designer for @shapeshiftersvt. 2024 marks our 10th anniversary and we wanted to do something big and special and new to mark the occasion and my partner, co-owner, head tailor, fashion designer, and founder, Eli, pitched a fashion line themed around cryptids. We call it The Cryptid Collection and it features six of our and the internet's favorite cryptids: The Fresno Nightcrawler, Mothman, the Jackalope, the Jersey Devil, Champ, and the Squonk.
My parts of the collection were designing the posters, and creating fabric designs for our very own, truly Shapeshifters designed chest binders and sports bras. But since we utilized Spoonflower to have those fabrics printed, they're also available through the Spoonflower marketplace for anyone to buy for their own sewing projects.
And now that all of the fabric designs are done and uploaded and proofed and listed, I, as promised, am posting them here to talk a bit more in-depth about them, the thoughts and inspirations behind them, and the design process.
Starting with the Fresno Nightcrawler.
Part of the reason I'm starting with the Fresno Nightcrawler is because this was the very first design that I finished. When we were planning out the fabrics, it was the most solid design concept I had that wasn't just adapting the poster design to fabric (mostly because ... I hadn't done the poster yet). It was the first one I really came up with, the one I was most excited about, and the one that pretty much stayed the same from concept to execution.
I love houndstooth. Which is weird to say when I don't think I've ever owned a single garment or accessory in with a houndstooth pattern? But I do, I love it. I love the teeny tiny classic version of the pattern; I love a blown-up graphic version of the pattern; I love plays and variations on it. So when I was trying to brainstorm what kind of fabric pattern I could make inspired by a creature with such a simple shape whose only colors were white and black, the idea came pretty quickly: A houndstooth. Or a Nightcrawlertooth, if you will. It was a trick, though, and a real learning experience, especially with this being my first design.
Getting a pattern to repeat smoothly is a skill unto itself. Basically you have what's called a tile, and the tile contains the part of the pattern that you want to repeat. Then, when your pattern is created, the original tile just gets essentially copy-pasted over and over so 1) you don't have to draw the whole yard of fabric, and 2)all of the repeated parts of the design are identical. But by doing it this way, you have seams you need to take into consideration. If you think of putting the pattern together, it's sort of like making a basic quilt: You start with one square (or rectangle), then attach four more squares to each side, and then just keep doing that. Each one of those seams (top, bottom, left, right) is a place where the pattern might not match up, which means when it's applied to a yard of fabric, it's not going to look like a smooth, seamless pattern.
Of course there's ways to avoid this altogether. If you're doing a simple stripe, using the line tool in your drawing software will keep your stripe a consistent thickness, and holding SHIFT while you draw it will keep the line straight. Or, even easier, you can create a pattern where the part that repeats doesn't straddle a seam; like a polkadot pattern, where the dot(s) can be centered on the tile and seams only cut through a solid background.
The trouble with a houndstooth, though, is that not only does the tile need to repeat, it's made up of repeating figures that interlock. I can't just center the white Nightcrawler on the tile and call it a day, because then the black Nightcrawler straddles the seam. On top of that, they needed to be shaped in such a way that the negative space between the white Nightcrawlers left a shape that was also recognizable as a Nightcrawler and similar enough to the white one that the pattern is mostly seamless.
I fully admit that I was not able to do this on my own. Enter: Eli. Eli is, among other things, a math nerd who enjoys an excuse to break out the graph paper. They found a tutorial online and got to graphing and shaping and, in just a couple of hours, had gotten the shapes down. I took that tile, illustrated it, cleaned up the seams (shoutout to Eli for also finding an easier way to do this than just manually copy-pasting), and voila! A Fresno Nightcrawler houndstooth.
Now, you might look at that image up there and say, "Well that's all well and good, Pents, but they're kind of blobby and the lines are wobbly and it's all a little uneven." To which I say ... yeah, that's true. It's also kind of intentional. Like, I'm not gonna sit here and claim I got the basic pattern done and wasn't exhausted. But also I could've left it and come back to it the next day to clean up the lines and shapes a bit more, make everything really smooth and even. But, like. Look at this guy.
Tumblr media
He's just a weird kinda blobby little dude. So I left the pattern kinda weird and blobby.
Even if I'd cleaned it, it's such a blobby little shape that's so at odds with the classic houndstooth that's all straight lines and sharp angles. So I made a deliberate choice to not polish it up. To kind of lean into the kodama vibes:
Tumblr media
I am really so so proud of and pleased with this design. It came out almost exactly how I pictured it; it was really the most true design collaboration between Eli and I; and I'm just so pleased, after a lifetime of being a houndstooth lover, to now also have designed a houndstooth.
If you'd like a custom-sized, handmade, made-to-order binder or sports bra in this houndstooth like the one in the photos, you can find those listings (as well as the poster listing) here, on the Shapeshifters website. There are three pattern size options, the classic teeny tiny version; a somewhat bigger medium size; and a super graphic large size. Our binders are the most comfortable and effective on the market thanks to our finely graded internal sizing system. Because we're a small operation that makes every garment to order, both our binders and sports bras are highly customizable, and can be made to ALL measurements with flat pricing across sizes.
If you'd like to purchase the fabric yourself for your own sewing projects, you can order it through our Spoonflower shop, where we have it listed in the same three pattern sizes.

Currently working my way through your win95 pattern and loving it! I was wondering what software do you use to design your patterns?
Hey anon! Sorry I took so long to answer this, you managed to catch me right in the middle of a vacation and then naturally with the notification gone I forgot this was still in my inbox 🤦‍♂️
First of all thank you, I'm so glad you're enjoying the pattern! Designing them usually happens in a few steps for me. I start off by simply making the design as 1:1 scale pixel art, which there are dedicated programs for but you can do it in basically any drawing program by just making your canvas itty bitty and then using a one-pixel square brush with no anti-aliasing.
Tumblr media
Then I upload it to Stitch Fiddle! https://www.stitchfiddle.com It's a really great website that does the bulk of the work turning an image into a workable pattern. The only weakness I've noticed is that it sometimes struggles to convert my colors accurately into floss colors, so I'll tweak those a bit until it looks as close to my design as possible. Obviously you'll never get a perfect match between screen colors and physical dyes, but I usually get pretty close!
Then I always go and actually make the design once myself before selling the pattern. This is both to have a good photo for the listing, but also because I'll sometimes make a couple more on-the-fly color changes once I'm actually in the store buying floss. (It's also why I only have three patterns for sale lmao.....) Once I've done that, I'll pay for a one-month subscription to Stitch Fiddle, which allows me to export the pdfs with a lot more customizability than a free account, and it's cheap enough that I always make back that expense pretty quickly.

FORCE OF ATTRACTION
every magnet has a north pole and a south pole. placing two unlike poles together causes them to attract. when you try to place two like poles together (north to north or south to south), they will repel each other.

COMPUTER ENGINEERING / ELECTRICAL ENGINEERING
you two were polar opposites.
personality wise, xiao was quiet, aloof, and kept to himself most of the time. you, on the other hand, were the friendliest person on campus, always eager and ready to help if anyone had a problem.
he wore dark shades of black, grey, and the occasional teal to match the accents in his hair, while you were always delightfully decorated with an abundance of colours and patterns. even your majors were black and white.
so why is it that all of a sudden you two are inseparable?
the canteen was filled with idle chatter as usual, but one topic seemed to stick among the students of your college, the topic was discussed in hushed whispers and occasional coos as you broke off half of your cinnamon roll to give to him.
students will gawk at the gentle way you hold his hand to lead him to the location of your biweekly date, will laugh among themselves at the rips of his ears as it glows pink from realising that despite your major, how nice they are to hold, and will reminisce on the small kiss you have gave him prior.
(now that they think on it a little more, his flushing ears may be the result of that)

ASSASSIN / OBSTETRICIAN
your dynamic was chaotic. one who did all they could to bring life into this world, and the other who never hesitated to take it away. you did everything in your power to ensure safe deliveries while he would massacre in the flick of a wrist.
you sob as you mourn the loss of your patients offspring, while tartaglia laughs at the screams of victims praying for their lives.
two completely different world views.
yet, you cradle his head into your chest as a mother would to her newborn. yet, his blades soil with deep crimson as soon as he finds any person that may have given you a hard time.
yet, despite the stark difference in occupations, you two make it work.
after all, you two are human.
LINGUIST / MATHEMATICIAN
the both of you bonded on your love for your respective fields… while unintentionally hating on the others.
kazuha loved poetry. words were so powerful to the point where they can alter your very emotions, they were colourful, so full of life and meaning. he loved the way how the right words could change the very course of a conversation, and the allure of alliterations that allow ample amusement. numbers just seemed too… stuck up, too boring.
you, on the other hand, has a passion for numbers. numbers were factual, straightforward, to the point. if you counted ten apples, there is without a doubt ten apples. numbers never lied, numbers never had double meanings, numbers never mislead you the way that words and letters did.
kazuha visibly relaxes as he sees your animated expressions explaining your passion, his mind being swarmed with thousands of words and phrases to attempt at describing this feeling, describing you
but alas, nothing seemed good enough for someone as breath-taking as you.

when your friends don't invite you to the matching username party :(
Now that we've seen all of John's friends talk at least a little bit, I wanted to deep dive into their usernames, and see what they might be able to tell us about the characters we don't know yet. For sure I've seen some weird usernames in my time on sites like MSN Messenger, but these seem especially weird, and not like words most kids would use.
There's also a weird pattern - all three of John's friends only use words beginning with T and G in their screen names. We have TT, TG and GG, so if they were doing a bit together we'd expect John to be GT, but instead he's EB - not even close. Could this be a sign that he feels disconnected from the friend group, not fully part of things, doubting that they want him around? Is it possible that the other three are all each other's 'real life' friends while John only talks to them online? Did John not want to be GT, or did nobody ever tell him there was a theme? Was he GT before, but then got mad at his friends one day and change it to spite them? Or is there another GT we have yet to meet?
Discussion of all four known chumhandles under the cut - only ~1k words :)
ectoBiologist - As discussed in my in depth John thoughts, the strict definition of this is 'someone who studies outside/external biology', which could relate to a huge variety of very niche fields - but, knowing John, almost certainly refers to the biology of ectoplasm, slime, and ghosts, a field which doesn't exist in reality but which John might consider himself a pioneer of.
As a sidenote, if John was GT, he might go in a different direction with his username. We know from TT that John regularly wears disguises while talking to her / interacting with his dad / just in daily life, and that he's into comedy and pranks (NOT clowns). Reflecting those, I came up with guisecladTrouper as a chumhandle that would fit the modifierTypeofguy pattern, as well as the letters. If anyone has any other GT ideas for John, I'd love to hear them!
turntechGodhead - TurnTech is a Chinese company founded in 2001 that makes scientific and educational software. This probably isn't the reference, but you never know; this kid could be really into science, happen to own a piece of software from this company, and have liked the word. I also think it could be short for 'turntable technology', which can be a few different hobbies - records/DJing, railroads, or sculpture/ceramics/metalwork. DJing fits his vibe but I think it'd be so cool if he was a train guy. 'Turn' relates to shaping or forming as well as changing direction, so he could be someone who develops his own technology.
This also fits really well with 'godhead', which is the true or essential nature of God in several major world religions. So this could be a suggestion of a guy with delusions of grandeur and a massively inflated ego, or, it could be someone who takes on the role of a god himself - some kind of creator. I really think this kid is going to be into invention, metalworking, and engineering. Built his own computer from scratch type of guy. I bet he owns a soldering iron and uses it for fun.
tentacleTherapist - Lots of living things have tentacles, including snails, squid, jellyfish, coral, moss animals, caecilians, the star-nosed mole, some carnivorous plants, Squidward, and mind flayers. Tentacles are generally associated with sea creatures, horror media, or both. Therapist, meanwhile, is a person who helps to heal someone's physical or psychological problems. The words sound really good when said together, but don't have an obvious link.
One idea is that she's someone who either lives near water or owns weird pets - a tank of snails or jellyfish seems reasonable - perhaps caring for or rehabilitating them from the wild. But the idea of her being into cosmic horror creates a fascinating parallel between her username and John's. John is a biologist; he studies, analyzes and understands academically, while TT is a therapist; she rehabilitates and understands emotionally. John works with ghosts and slime, while TT works with aliens and deep sea horror. It's delightful to me that they might have bonded by nerding out over paranormal lore, an interest probably neither of them shares with many people around them.
gardenGnostic - I keep reading this as a shortening of 'common or garden gnostic' as in 'your average, everyday gnostic' which, out of all the four usernames, might be the wildest one for a 13 year old to be. Much like 'godhead', 'gnostic' carries a very strong religious theme, especially with the capital letter - I know it's the syntax, but the words could be this way round for a reason. I'm definitely going to do some background reading on Gnosticism as we get to know this character to see how well it fits.
The first word could also be referencing the Garden of Eden, the original sin and the tree of knowledge; the combination indicating a character with a drive for spiritual knowledge and self-understanding above all else. In a more literal sense, I'm imagining someone who spends a lot of time outdoors and who would think nothing of a few injuries from the Slimer pogo ride in the yard. This chumhandle is also only a few letters away from 'garden gnome', which makes me think of someone who enjoys the ornamental, decorative, and whimsical.
Just as John and TT's usernames are a pair with similar themes, TG and GG's handles also match up. (Sidenote: does this mean these are the pairs of 'best friends'? Feels weird considering TT is the only one of the three who didn't wish John a happy birthday). Both TG and GG have chumhandles strongly related to religion, creation, and origins, with TG representing the mechanical and technical side of things, and GG representing the natural and environmental side.
So, that's our four chums! The most interesting thing to me is how well these pairs of usernames work together, despite John being outside of the letter pattern. Both these things feel very intentional and not like I'm reaching; they definitely mean Something in the themes, but it's too soon to say what. I'm so impatient to see more of these characters and learn anything concrete about them at all.
If you've made it this far, here's a quick poll!

Starmageddon: Birth Charts from Online Planetariums
I fixed the math that's missing from chart calculation software...
Kristen Patterson / KP O'Neil
Jan. 14, 2025 / Uttara Ashadha P3 in Sagittarius / Social Capitalism
Zodiac birth charts - Tropical and Sidereal - are calculated with the 12 constellations divided evenly, 30° each, and therefore can't be accurate;
it's not mathematical and scientific to measure them evenly, equal to each other - this requires ignoring astronomy, when the very careful attention paid to stars and heavenly bodies for 24,000 years or more is what built the knowledge-base for understanding ourselves - our blueprints - through astrology.
All that's needed for accuracy is to set the birth chart calculation software to measure the constellations correctly - unevenly - and all software could have been set for this from the start -
it's the culture and business of Zodiac astrology that keeps the calculations and software incorrect -
there are several other corrections necessary as well, all of which were fought over when online planetariums reached near-maturity in the 2010s, taking the already-weak excuses out of matching astronomy to Zodiac astrology (excepting Babylonian astrology;)
if I wanted another life journey to learn coding, I would create the software myself - but I'm most satisfied as an artist, drawing instructor and forensic medium to have spent four years creating, testing and refining a set of chart drawings to interpret online planetarium results - overlaying jpeg screenshots on constellations scaled and measured by Nakshatras and the Gregorian calendar (which is how I found a gap in the wheel for a full-sized Abhijit Nakshatra... hmmm...)
working manually ensures there are no automated glitches in my results - which I process five ways and five times, and check from three online planetariums -
you can check your placements right now, if you go to one of the planetarium sites (though Stellarium on desktop is off by 45 minutes - Stellarium is perfect in App,) and set the location to your birthplace, the date/clock to your birthday and birth time;
I believe this is also a superior emotional and spiritual experience for encountering your birth data - and when it comes to determining your Ascendant, you can and should choose by what star is visibly the strongest on the horizon - your Descendant being half of your core personality, and needing to be determined the same way - which star is strongest on the horizon - and this usually leads to Ascendants and Descendants that span two Nakshatras, with auras of seven days -
the huge gains I've made by matching everything to calendar dates are beyond belief - numerology vindicated, and Spirit Guides with human histories/trackable dates empowered - I'll explain in another post;
Tropical astrology needs to rename itself to Tropicology, as it measures Signs only by the equinoxes and solstices hitting lines of longitude that are mapped to the geography of Earth - following the so-called Seasons, which have had moments of consistency but are different worlds in different hemispheres, with Tropical being Eurocentric - and can only assess personalities as specifically as a Season can set one - while the Seasons have been shifting tremendously... how to measure someone by 1° with this kind of accuracy? Not possible...
and if you are aware of the problem of Precession, you know corrections are needed to allow for Earth's wobble on its axis - which wrecked Tropical's Tropics all of 2000+ years ago - the reliance on predictive astronomy tables based on patterning gave Zodiac astrologers the option to calculate birth charts from these tables, instead of being active astronomers keeping pace with the heavens -
Jyotisha experts, relying on a fixed-star system, still watch the skies because they have no conflict of interest - except when trying to blend Nakshatras with Zodiac astrologies for increased market shares;
I don't know why 'Sidereal' astrologers corrected birth chart calculations for Precession but not for the unmathematical culture of 30° - their leader and (arguably) one of my Guides, Cyril Fagan, pointed out the 30° needed to be abandoned for accuracy's sake - though I expect the timely and conjunct deaths of several Sidereal astrologers help explain why -
I found Cyril's argument about two months into my astrology studies, and then it took a year for my brain to wake up (the night before my birthday) and realise I could answer his argument by building star chart drawings to interpret the settings in online planetariums - and at the same time, synchronise the calendar and the Nakshatras with the true Zodiac...

I'll soon be publishing pdf booklets with detailed results for Ascendant-Descendant Core Personalities
because my corrections led to a discovery of patterns in our charts set by our Ascendants, that organise all 112 Padas in specific relationships and sequencing with each other, making it possible to know how all your chart aspects work together -
which I've also tested and proved (proofs will be included, and published regularly) to match how your planet cycles imprint your childhood and adolescent development - and through which Spirit Guides - by calendar dates -
I will update this article with a link to them.

can you elaborate on what you mean when you mention the "blue lock sociolect." because the linguistic/social situation that must be developing in this stanford prison ass training center fascinates me endlessly
hello this is going to be a lot. tldr at the end.
for anyone unaware, i use blue lock "sociolect" in this case specifically meaning the dialect that develops in the blue lock facility. i'd classify it more as a sociolect than a dialect, because while they now have a geographic location in common, i would say the speech features show up more in certain characters who've leaned into the blue lock egoist mentality more. the way hiori speaks changes as his view of himself and soccer change. (i also think that bltv enjoyers start talking like this. horrifically)
the blue lock sociolect is a phenomenon i invented in my mind palace to cope with the way i feel when i read blue lock and see phrases like "you're an eyesore, you pink-haired philistine" and "rotten orange." i brought it up in this post on my other blog some time ago, but in short, i've decided that the rather. unique way the blue lockers speak to one another is a result of putting 300 [and lowering] boys age 15-18 from all over japan in a hypercompetitive environment with very little adult supervision.
it's all about the individual, hence many of the insults taking the target's most striking physical trait and combining it with something the speaker decides is negative about the target. with japanese being a language with pretty structured assignments of appropriate politeness based on age, experience, and status, i could see it eroding given the general lack of older adult presence (ego appearing on a screen for like 15 minutes doesn't count, especially since he's rude as hell), and the mentality the players are encouraged to accept. rin isn't the best example given his dedication to hating across languages, cultures, and age ranges, but isagi pretty much comments on how he's rude as hell by social norms once, then clearly gets used to it.
i think the blue lock sociolect starts to diversify a bit once we enter the nel. the blue lock boys are shown studying english, but the nel introduces an environment where a lot of their teammates will most likely be speaking a language other than english or japanese within their teams (except for manshine but that's british english which isn't usually what's taught in japan so even then their contributions to the sociolect will be a bit different).
we don't know exactly how accurate the translation software is, or how it handles the cultural differences in honorific language, but based on some of the things we've seen (ness calling kunigami "kunigami-san" that one time, also ness being shown saying "ja" through the translation, "beinschuss" from kaiser, whatever's going on with charles, etc.) they're not always consistent.
(i haven't checked out the raws for these yet though, so im actually not entirely sure what's coming through in japanese.these could just be translation choices.)
this multi-language environment and the non-translation of certain speech could also have an impact on our blue lock players' vocabulary and introduce other languages' terms and speech patterns. japanese already has a pretty huge collection of loan words that eventually create "foreign" phrases that don't exist outside of japanese, so this facility could make this phenomenon occur more rapidly.
we see otoya say "golazo" during the fc barcha match, and while darai says the same thing during their bowling match, it wouldn't be too far off to assume that otoya picked it up from his spanish speaking teammates.
i could add more but this is getting too long so tl;dr: putting 300 15-18 year old boys in a prison with barely any adult supervision would make neat language shifts.
some features of the blue lock sociolect i think exist:
the particular type of insult we see so much of in blue lock
general lack of/comparatively less importance given to honorific language and polite conjugations of words
shounen protag accent (you'd know it when you hear it.)
increased usage of german, english, spanish, italian, and/or french terms
FAR less subject omission than average japanese, especially when the subject is "i" [thanks aryu.]

What are Optimal Character Recognition (OCR) Services?
OCR Outsourcing Services
Tumblr media
Optical Character Recognition is a technology and resource that converts various types of documents—such as scanned and printed paper documents and sheets, PDFs, or images and physical documents captured and scanned by a digital camera or device—into editable and searchable data of information. OCR Outsourcing refers to hiring third-party experts to handle these processes, making data management more efficient and cost-effective for businesses.
How Do OCR Services Work?
OCR technology scans printed or handwritten text and translates it into digital characters using pattern recognition and machine learning. Once the data is converted, it can be edited, searched, and stored electronically. This is especially useful and beneficial for the businesses that manage and hold a high volume of paper records or image-based files as raw source data.
Key Benefits of OCR Outsourcing -
Faster Data Processing:
By outsourcing OCR services, businesses can process large volumes of data significantly faster than they can do in-house. Professional experts leverage tools and advanced resources and employ trained professionals to assure the prompt turnaround times and processing for faster data proceedings and operations.
Improved Accuracy:
High-quality OCR Outsourcing providers use AI-driven tools and resources that minimize and lower down the errors. As this guarantees that the captured data is examined up to as precise as possible, lowering the demand for manual corrections and errors.
Cost Efficiency:
Maintaining and leveraging in-house source OCR setup can be expensive and costly. As the outsourcing eliminates the demand for costly software and system, infrastructure, and specialized staff, offering a more affordable option for ongoing needs and business demands.
Better Data Organization:
OCR Outsourcing makes it easier to store and retrieve data as scanned documents become searchable. While this is quite helpful and considerable for industries such as healthcare, law, finance, and logistics.
Scalability:
Whether you need to process a few documents or thousands, outsourcing partners can scale their services to match your demand without affecting quality or delivery speed. Companies and professional experts such as Suma Soft, IBM, Cyntexa, and Cignex are known for offering reliable OCR Outsourcing services. They aid businesses to simplify the data capture process, lower down the workload, and improve the operational efficiency by handling document digitization with precision and care. Choosing a trusted partner ensures high-quality results and seamless data management. They combine technology, skilled teams, and secure processes to deliver high-quality OCR results tailored and personalized as per the settings of different industries and business sizes.
