Meet Dan- he’s our Oxbridge advisor and personal statement specialist.

Dan recently finished an MSt is Renaissance Literature at the University of Oxford, where he also took his BA in English.

On his way he received an MSt offer from St John’s, Cambridge, and several other top UK institutions. As an undergraduate at Oxford he held senior positions at the university’s most prestigious arts publication, and edited for an international climate journal.

Dan has won several prizes for his academic work, including the Elton Davies scholarship for achievement. He is currently an academic researcher at the University of Cambridge, working towards his PhD.

In his spare time Dan enjoys creative writing, photography and film.

Personal Statement

Hello, I am Mariia Buhaievska and I am from Ukraine. I was born and lived my entire life there, until I came to Korea for my undergraduate studies. At this moment in life, I am a learner, still discovering who I am and who I want to become. My deep interest in various forms of design has brought me to Yonsei UIC, where I am majoring in CDM (Culture and Design Management) and IID (Information Interaction Design).In the realm of art and design, I have experienced variety of different aspects. Starting with an official Art school, I learned traditional art, sculpture, and art history. I have also explored art and design on my own, creating graphic illustrations and animations through Procreate. At Yonsei, I have enhanced my skills in Blender, Unity, Adobe Photoshop, Adobe Illustrator, Adobe XD, Adobe Premiere, and MetaSpark Studio. I still must admit I am not as good with Touch Designer.

As a junior, I am seeking work experience in the design field. Currently, I have a part-time job as a graphic designer and product manager with the Ukrainian brand SweetStone. There I design packaging for their products and work on prototyping and production. Additionally, I am working as an RA (Residential Assistant) in the Appenzeller House for the third semester in a row. There, I guide freshman students, design programs, and collaborate with an RA team to organize large-scale events (approximately 150-200 people). I was a member of the DFK (Design Factory Korea) club and have also organized a Mockup Session event in collaboration with them.Beyond the design sphere, I am an introverted person who enjoys meaningful conversations with others yet cherishes time alone to find balance. Having recently adopted a cat, I now have much more home time than before :)

As mentioned, I appreciate the company of others and value understanding their perspectives. My favourite places are the high mountains and grassy fields; I am a true nature person who would prefer collecting mushrooms in the forest over a night out at a party. I enjoy drawing with gouache paints, creating 3D models in Blender, and surfing (even though I am not that good at the last one). Through the analysis of my favourite things, I have found my own style in art and life. Specifically, I've discovered that I enjoy depicting issues through nature by incorporating hard meanings into aesthetically pleasing elements, such as flowers (examples of which are available in my portfolio). I enjoy uncovering new design features and learning more about myself throughout the course. It was a really pleasant moment when I was able to create 3D models and environments on my own during my previous semester; it felt like unlocking a new level in a game, revealing fresh opportunities in design.

During this course, I am eager to learn more about gamification, which I believe is deeply connected with human psychology and thought processes—an area that fascinates me. I aim to understand why people prefer certain content or applications over others.

            My current dream is quite straightforward: to financially support myself and my parents while living peacefully in a nature-centric area. I want to live near mountains or the sea, perhaps in a place similar to Jeju Island, where I can surf and work remotely. My plan to realize this dream involves working as a designer in a Korean or US company to build my reputation among fellow designers and 3D modellers. Eventually, I intend to transition to freelancing and online work.

So that session at the cafe was great! So glad I went again. I stayed there for 🦎 2.5 hrs and started it off with an amazing slice of red velvet cake and pineapple & passion fruit smoothie. I then worked on finishing up some artist research and my personal statement. I'm almost at 3,000 characters now so the first draft is almost done! On the way back to the car I also dropped into a shop and bought myself a pretty necklace 😊

I feel like I say this every month, but where did november go?

I’m currently working through my personal statements for graduate school. Most of my stuff is already done, but I still have to edit my personal statement for Western and UofA, and write out my personal statement for Dalhousie and McGill. Luckily, I’m going to use my strongest personal statement from last year as a guide, and just edit it based on the school’s preferences. How does that sound?

If there’s anyone that would be interested in looking them over, I’d actually really appreciate it. It’s for SLP, and deadlines are coming up. Fingers crossed they go well 🤞 but I do actually feel much more confident going in this time around. My personal statements will be stronger, my experiences are stronger, and my LORs will all be stronger as well. I’m hoping that’s enough. It *will* be enough.

Sharing the Personal Statement that got me into my master’s at Oxford

This is a copy of the Personal Statement I submitted to get into my master’s at the University of Oxford in England. Yes, I got accepted into my dream master’s programme and preferred college at Oxford. No, I will not be attending Oxford in the fall despite receiving an offer for a variety of financial reasons. I recently took up a funded master’s offer elsewhere.

I’m sharing my Personal Statement as a sample for any of you younglings hoping to study at Oxford if you want an idea of what they may be looking for in the Humanities Division for graduate admission. Online resources were a great free help for me during my own application process. Do not plagiarize my shit—they’ll know. First Week of Summer 2025

This week I've been doing a bit of revision so I don't forget stuff before Year 13 and I've been doing some further reading for my personal statement. I looked at the questions I need to answer and I panicked a bit. I don't know why though cause I have 8 weeks to write it. I've also been rewatching The Vampire Diaries and reading a novella titled Carmilla because I'm planning to do my English coursework on Vampirism. Anyways, stay tuned for some more posts!

our magazine mainly covers the topic of environmental law, encompassing topics such as:

- recent and historical case studies in environmental law

- environmental issues

- current affairs and discussions within the world of environmental law

- opinion pieces regarding environmental issues!

writing for a magazine is an amazing supercurricular activity and is an impressive addition to any personal statement. you will meet like-minded people, gain a deeper level of knowledge (whether about the environment, law, science or politics), improve critical thinking skills and develop your writing skills.
