Lasagna and Salad Forks
(tldr; Representation says to the audience, “I see you.” That’s been missing from Lucy for five seasons. It’s never once been present in Chenford.)
The Rookie actors are known to workshop lines with writers, and Alexi was on set for 7x16. There are opportunities to express even small cultural moments that align with Lucy's background. What could’ve been meaningful was yet another missed opportunity for Lucy. We got salad forks and lasagna instead.
I’ve spoken with friends who do peer-reviewed research on mixed-race couples and friends, and the lack of cultural reciprocity in Chenford’s portrayal stands out. While Chenford weren’t canonically a couple for very long, they’ve been “together” for over 120 episodes and across 7 seasons. In all that time, Lucy’s identity has never once been acknowledged between them—and hasn’t been referenced at all in over five seasons.
We don’t see this in other cross-cultural relationships on the show. Angela’s heritage has been thoroughly acknowledged in and out of Wopez across all seasons. Celina and Rodge aren’t even “together” and yet in one episode alone, they shared two conversations in separate scenes in her native tongue. Between episodes 7x14–7x16, Angela, Tim, Celina, Seth, and Rodge all speak Spanish. That’s meaningful.
Lucy doesn’t need to be constantly ‘ethnic-coded’ but the total absence of her heritage leaves her character defaulting into hegemonic whiteness within Asian packaging, especially when other characters’ cultures are proudly, consciously and consistently centered.
I’m not Italian or Mexican, but I love cooking and eating foods from those cultures. This isn’t about who’s “allowed” to make or enjoy what. It’s about a storytelling pattern that consistently sidelines Lucy’s identity—while giving other characters space to express and celebrate theirs.
Whether it’s through acting choices or the script, Lucy is not being given the same opportunities to express who she is. And without any counterbalancing moments that connect her to her heritage, even pasta becomes part of a larger pattern of minimization—especially when other characters’ cultures are depicted loudly and proudly in the same scenes. As they should be. But so should Lucy.
Lucy's dinner party hostess performance is white. Lucy calling her grandmother “Nana” in 5x18 is white. Lucy fussing over salad forks in 7x16 feels like something Patrice Evers would do—not Lucy Chen.
Some fans have exaggerated Lucy asking for salad forks into this idea that she’ll transform Tim’s home with every kind of fork imaginable. But this is the same Lucy who just a few episodes ago said that she budgets down to the cent. The same Lucy whose parents went bankrupt when she was in elementary school. She’s not someone preoccupied with white-coded domestic aesthetics. It’s frustrating to see her stretched into a version of white femininity that doesn’t reflect who she is—or who she’s been.
It honestly feels like Moira Kirkland, who wrote the episode, inserted a version of herself instead of writing Lucy true to character. Kirkland has written for Hawaii Five-0, a show with a main cast that included many Asian and Pacific Islander actors. She knows how to handle these dynamics—she’s done it with Celina. But she went the opposite direction with Lucy. And it seems like no one—Melissa, the producers, script supervisors—flagged it.
Tim’s father literally abused him yet his house is coded with white American boyhood. Meanwhile, Lucy’s culture is nowhere to be found. Why are we getting salad forks instead of anything meaningful that ties her back to her identity? Salad forks script her into this very specific, white suburban “perfect wife” image instead of anything connected to who she really is.

There’s a moment where Lucy walks past Tim’s rice cooker several times. He owns an “Aroma” brand. I did some research and found that “Aroma” was founded by Peter Chang in Southern California 50 years ago. It’s an Asian American kitchen staple. That suggests Lucy’s influence—because it’s unlikely Tim would own one otherwise—but it’s also never acknowledged by Lucy. She passes it after touching his arm to pull lasagna from the oven. She passes it again to get the door.
“Representation” isn’t a blink-and-you’ll-miss-it appliance in the background. Representation is Celina and Zander using Spanish as code because he knows who she is. Representation says to the audience, “I see you.” That’s been missing from Lucy for five seasons. It’s never once been present in Chenford.
I would’ve loved to see Lucy scoop white rice out of that cooker. Just imagine if, instead of asking where the salad forks are, Lucy asked Tim where he keeps the soy sauce. Tim could still quip that he’s a 45-year-old who lives alone—that part doesn’t need to change—but that moment would suddenly reflect an interracial relationship.

Sometimes you go for an early sunday walk to mediate and you end up composing an entire somewhat sacrilegious poem about cats in heaven in your brain so here you go. Sometimes in idle moments I think about the Other Side and the small furry friends who have passed through and are not waiting--no cat knows how to wait. Walker, I can see, pawing at the Gate, trying to pull it open and acting like he did when St. Peter holds it for him. He trots, his question mark tail twitching like his ears as he passes angels holding harps and trumpets Looking and finding one with an oboe and a pile of reedshavings just right to sit on. And Lucy, crossing the Rainbow bridge one dainty paw at a time, still only half her makeup on, until she reaches The dead center and stops, looking both ways before rolling onto her back, writhing into the best possible place for the sun to warm her. Charlie-- of the Baby, I am certain. He has Found his way in five minutes to the Throne and clawed his way up the soft white of His robes. Braced like a child on His knee, he puts paws on His shoulders, tail whacking against the place a spear entered He looks into the Creator’s eyes and bites His nose, as if to say: I was told there would be Loaves and Fishes.
#my pets#Charlie may you rest in peace unfortunately you may have gone to kitty hell which is also mouse heaven. efficient system#of course cats can get anywhere so good luck to hell on keeping him. (affectionate affectionate he was the worst cat in the world)#Lucy and Walker I'm sure are being Delightful though

Cut The Threads Of Fate
Birthed wrong by the standards of every world, they were Aslan’s Scourge and Sword, his children-gods called to free the throne by slaughtering the Witch.
They were the Pevensies, born of Frank and Helen.
They were War.
They were Pestilence.
They were Famine.
And they were Death.
Peter, golden-haired and ocean-eyed, with a sharp tongue and a sharper mind.
Peter, who taught himself blade-work by the age of five with butter knives.
Peter, who ran an underground fighting ring for the neighborhood children.
Peter, who was always at the center of every schoolyard fight, despite never throwing a punch himself.
Peter, who, when questioned about the aforementioned schoolyard scraps, would always smile a bit too sharp and laugh for a bit too long and then say the same things over and over, that it wasn’t him, that he had simply spoken, and that they had simply complied.
Peter, who learned he liked the taste of blood as he licked his sword clean, a headless human corpse slumped beneath his boots.
Peter, who was crowned in gold and blood.
Peter, who was Magnificent.
Peter, who was War.
Lucy, slight and light-footed, slipping between the shadows easily and unnoticeable.
Lucy, who only ate what she could find herself in an English forest when she was a child, lips stained from green leaves and black gnarled roots and poisonous berries as red as the lipstick her sister would someday wear.
Lucy, who sent a girl home with an illness that would not heal, that would never heal, when she’d insulted her sister — why doesn’t she talk, she a retard or something? — simply tilting her head to the side and asking the other student why it mattered, when the news came back that the girl had died.
Lucy, who slipped her hand into the embrace of the goat-man with a parasol and simply knew how deep the Witch’s corruption spread.
Lucy, who received a cordial from Father Christmas to balance out the death she’d been able to give since birth.
Lucy, who could take an arrow from her quiver, run her fingers down it, string it, and shoot it — the minions of the White Witch drowning in their own blood, skin falling off of bones, bones splintering into shards, cancerous growths bursting and twisting out of their bodies, rotting from the inside out, growing from the outside in, dying by the thousands.
Lucy, who was crowned in ashes and copper.
Lucy, who was Valiant.
Lucy who was Pestilence.
Edmund, pale as snow, eyes like dark hollows carved into his face, hair a tangle of brown soil and rotting red leaves.
Edmund, always just out of the frame in photographs, always just out of the corner of eyes.
Edmund, who only gained color in mirrors and looking glasses and the fear-widened pupils of others.
Edmund, who was nothing but collection of bones and a gaping mouth with pointed teeth and cracked, bloody lips — when adam’s flesh and adam’s bone — and a Hunger that never went away, but was sometimes filled with his mother’s blisteringly-hot vegetable soup and his siblings understanding of their shared Otherness and his father’s words of kindness and love and gentle affections.
Edmund, who stumbled into an another world with sneer and then stumbled out of it after a war and a decade-and-five years of peace with the blood of the sun running through his veins in place of his own and winter split into his bones instead of the marrow.
Edmund, who felt full only once the Witch’s magic settled in his stomach like frostbitten-stones, spelled so he drew blood from his wrists with his teeth and called it hot chocolate, drew snow and ice from the ground and called it Turkish delight.
Edmund, who sunk into a Witch’s embrace to distract her just long enough for his brother to run them both through.
Edmund, who was crowned in dew and platinum.
Edmund, who was Just.
Edmund, who was Famine.
The stone is broken here, cracked and shattered and splintered, the paper records burnt or molded or swallowed by the sea, the ending of the ballad of the god-children is simply: lost.
Only a fragment remains, passing from mouth to mouth and drifting on the grief-soaked southern winds.
Only a sentence remains.
The only words, in memory and not, to ever be spoken by the god of death, the god of mourning, the god of silence.
Take me with them
If they ever was an answer, it is unknowable.

Ooooh, I feel as your book club partner, I need to know everything about this Narnia WIP! Maybe both, if you're feeling charitable. XD
Thanks for playing!! :) [link to ask game]
You're the person who is most entitled to this knowledge, yes, haha. I thought I'd told you about them, but...maybe not? Oh well, here we go!
I had to fix the ending to The Lion, The Witch and the Wardrobe (the last three paragraphs in particular). Coming back from Narnia needed to be so much worse for the Pevensies; I needed them to never, ever be able to move on from either their going there or their coming back, in various terrible and awful ways. I need them traumatized and ready to tear into Aslan with their bare hands.
In the first fic, everything is much the same as the book, it's just that things aren't so "and then the adventure was over! ta-daaa!" after they come out of the wardrobe as their child selves. I reread what I've written so far, and here's my favorite bit:
They found Peter in the Professor's library one evening with a look of purest ire on his face. He was glaring down at a copy of the Bible laid open on one of the desks.
Lucy stepped forward and flipped some pages, landing on the opening to Isaiah. She huffed out something almost like a laugh. "Hear, O heavens, and give ear, O earth," she read aloud, "for the Lord hath spoken: Children I have reared, and brought up, and they have rebelled against Me."
Edmund the Just reached past her and closed the good book.
—
The other fic goes off the rails a little more. It starts at the same point in the book as the first one, and they deal with similar problems, but! the Pevensies come back through the wardrobe still looking like the adults that they are. They're experienced in war (albeit of a different sort), and they're grieving the loss of an entire world (again), and most importantly they are PISSED THE FUCK OFF.
Here's the opening:
...These Kings and Queens entered the thicket, and before they had gone a score of paces they all remembered that the thing they had seen was called a lamp-post, and before they had gone twenty more they noticed that they were making their way not through soft pine branches but through coats. And next moment before they fully realized what was happening they all came tumbling out of a wardrobe door into an empty room, Kings and Queens in their hunting array and just as they'd looked after twenty years in Narnia. It was the same day and the same hour of the day on which they had all gone into the wardrobe to hide, and yet everything was changed.
They heard voices in the hall, one of which must have belonged to the woman they knew to be the housekeeper, but whose name (after all this time) eluded them. They spent several long moments in a hushed silence, sitting in brushed leggings and dusty riding boots on the old hardwood floor, waiting for the door to either open or the visitors to pass by. At last the voices did move on, and the Pevensies rose up onto their feet to stand at full height. The room seemed smaller.
Lucy—beloved Lucy, who'd found it first—tentatively stepped back into the wardrobe, pushed aside fur coats in just her size, and let out a soft, mournful cry when her fingertips met the hard wooden back.
The door was closed.
She turned back toward the center of the room and found her siblings standing in a row behind her, their white-knuckled hands clasped together. Susan's long hair had started to fight at the binding of its braid, Edmund's free hand trembled, and even Peter was crying silent tears.
The sound of Narnia, that quiet hum of its very existence that had for so long hovered comfortably at the edge of their awareness, was gone. And each of them knew, then, in the same way they had known that Aslan was more than just a talking lion, that they weren't to get it back.
Everything was lost, and not only lost but their own fates unknowable to those they had loved, and who had loved them: Narnia would never learn what had happened to its Kings and Queens. To its Sons of Adam and Daughters of Eve.
It was over.
It had just begun.

Since I'm talking about 2023 reads with the Fortnight of Books wrapup, I thought I'd show you the Penguin Clothbound Classics style covers I designed for two of my favorite obscure old-enough-to-be-classics books I discovered last year: The Good Comrade and Desire by Una Lucy Silsberrad.
I chose yellow as the main color for The Good Comrade, because it seems to fit the mostly-sunny adventurous vibe of the story, and it offers good contrast for the blue daffodils--the image that had to be chosen because of how the plot centers around Julia's scheme to solve her family's financial problems by getting her hands on a rare blue daffodil.
The cover for Desire required a bit more thought. Red and gold seemed like a good color scheme for a book focused on questions of wealth and romance and finding your passion--and for the autumn season when I first read it. I settled on plates for the imagery because the plot centers around Desire helping Peter to run his family's pottery business, which finds a new process for making plates. The silver platters symbolize Desire's wealthy background--she had everything in life handed to her on a silver platter. The more rustic plates are in gold, because the simple, but good, work is where Desire really finds fulfillment.
#artwork#books#desire#the good comrade#una lucy silsberrad#i did design a cover that had gold plates that were more obviously plates#but they were a bit too bold and cartoony#so i felt like this subtler and more rustic image worked better#even if you might not get it without explanation

Analyzing the Shadow Kings Part 4 - Wrath
Alright halfway point now lets go! Again mild spoilers and I haven't read every appearance of this character so may have missed something.
Name origin is prob the simplest of all the shadow kings Lucifer, the devil, the fallen angel etc. etc. Also means bearer of light in Latin.
Its just every other shadow king named after a demon follows Peter Binsfeld's classifications Beelzebub with gluttony, Azmond with lust, and later I'll get to Mammon with greed. Lucifer's place on Binsfeld's list is under the sin of pride, and the demon categorized under wrath is Satan. There is confusion on whether or not these are the same entity or if Lucifer becomes known as Satan after his fall. Either way I could not find a definitive answer.
In the bible Lucifer is used only once to refer to a Babylonian king and is also a translation for the planet Venus so some argue there was never a fallen angel, and it merely refers to the king mentioned in the passage. Others say Lucifer is speaking through the king.
Moving onto design and personality before I continue this rabbit hole:
Again Lucifer has a pretty simple design he wears anime biker gear (big leather coat, studded boots, studded gloves, etc.) and physically he is a red devil with the tail and the horns. He has some markings on his torso but I can't really make anything out cause he always has a hand on his chest.
From looking at the marking I could see that he has a treasure trail, and speaking of hair Lucy's is mostly black, but he has a funny super saiyan deal going on complete with blue eyes too.
Personality-wise unsurprisingly he has a very short temper especially if Atmos is involved at all. Lucifer when he isn't angry is very loyal to Atmos to the point that he doesn't really care as long as its not harmful to Atmos. The shadow king is very much in love with Atmos after being connected to the dragon for so long. What is surprising is that he isn't just angry at everything Lucifer can be pretty generous and even patient at times.
Story spoilers:
We are first introduced to Lucy in 4-12 where its revealed that whenever Atmos sleeps he dreams of the shadow king. During their meeting Lucifer urges Atmos to take the dragon king's throne from Gaia and become the God of El Dorado.
Turns out long time ago Barboros implanted the star ruby in Atmos which connected the fire dragon and shadow king of indignition together. Also if Atmos gets angry the volcano lair of Surtsey will erupt.
When Barboros shows up demanding Gaia back Atmos takes Gaia to the center of Surtsey's lair while Lucifer rallys the villagers against Barboros.
Gaia dumps Atmos and the dragon begins to rage. To stop the destruction of the world Gaia takes up the sword Balmung against Atmos. Lucifer dives in front of Atmos to defend him but both get stabbed. However Gaia only used his God powers to cut off Atmos and Lucifer's connection to the volcano so now Atmos and Lucifer can't end the world via volcano anymore.
After Chapter 4 Lucifer usually appears whenever Atmos does or as just another member of the Surtsey crew.
Wrapping up Lucifer is quite a bit. I like him he might be one of my favorite Surtsey characters mostly cause he has an actual character. Its pretty neat that unlike other shadow kings he isn't really using Atmos if anything its the other way around.

The problem of Lucy
If you are interested in stories about the Narnia aftermath of the Pevensie siblings you might enjoy this.

Watch it on 1080 quality for best experience.
vimeo
There was a time, dark and divine, Exciting and new, shameful and true Free to explore, we had it all. Towering trust, insatiable lust Clouding the truth, both of us knew This sordid affair is ending in tears Yes we would go on knowing the wrong Until the day it was taken away Oh, all our love fell down to Earth. Here, broken and cold, with great remorse But for a while it all made sense It might have been just a dark pretense But you had me And I loved it To be with you, to be the one, To live a lie It really got me all excited. I felt wanted Then in the night the sorrow inside Was taken away. Deliverance came Fell from the sky. Heaven replied Salvation in streams, silent and clean All that we were, all that we knew Faded away with tears in the rain. Yes all that we were, all that we knew Is fading away like tears in the rain. There's also a first draft of the first part of the video, it's a bit different and it's only 2 minutes long. I published it on YT and there's a tumblr post about it (with the thumbnail I created for it but couldn't attach to it), but soon I will upload it to vimeo.

my main critiques of my tutorial paper is that it's way too scattered. should focus on one Young Girl Protagonist per author (probably nan for jones, tiffany for pratchett, lyra for pullman). And then should probably mention them within the context of Lucy Pevensie and Alice Inwonderland (and, sigh, wendy, even though peter pan is not a book i ever read and i don't really gaf about it though perhaps i should), and the ways the characters of tiffany/lyra/nan continue and engage with with that tradition of Young Girl As Witness Of Magic. (coraline would def fit into the postmodern camp too, i'm just not as interested in gaiman's work as i am in the other three. No Im Biased Against Him.jpg). on one hand theres something really fun about how lucy is the moral center of the kids in narnia specifically because of her unwavering belief, whereas tiffany/nan/lyra/coraline's tasks are in large part to question and disbelieve the structural narratives that shape their worlds and/or the other worlds they enter. and on the other hand the pivotal importance of Questioning is not wholly a Poststructuralist Fantasy invention, asking questions is a key part of what alice does throughout her journey and is of course critical to unmasking the titular wizard of oz (which is not part of the british fantasy tradition but rather a much sparser american fantasy tradition, but is vaguely relevant here for obvious reasons)

"The dean at the University of Georgia’s law school has ordered its first amendment law clinic to cease all work related to public records law – including a lawsuit against the Atlanta Police Foundation, the non-profit organization behind a planned $109m training center colloquially known as Cop City.
Dean Peter B “Bo” Rutledge gave the order to clinic director Clare R Norins within weeks of the clinic’s February announcement that one of its attorneys would be representing the digital news outlet Atlanta Community Press Collective, or ACPC, and the Chicago-based digital transparency research organization Lucy Parsons Labs in a lawsuit against the police foundation. Both groups filed the suit after making numerous queries to the organization under Georgia’s open records act, only to be ignored.
Ed Vogel, a researcher at Lucy Parsons Labs and a plaintiff, called the timing of the decision “alarming”, adding that Rutledge “has a responsibility to be completely transparent about why it was made”.
....
Rutledge later sent the Guardian a statement asserting that the move was “part of ongoing efforts to align the First Amendment Clinic’s activities more closely with the institution’s educational mission”.
This is “puzzling” given that the clinic’s own website says the issues it focuses on include “government transparency”, and “that transparent government is essential to a free, open and democratic society”, noted Ken Paulson, director of the Free Speech Center at Middle Tennessee State University.
This is frankly impossible to achieve if the dean of the law school takes open-records work off the table. Government transparency is composed of ‘sunshine’ and public records laws,” he said.
...
the fight against Cop City has drawn national and global headlines, particularly since 18 January of last year, when state troopers shot and killed Manuel Paez Terán, known as Tortuguita, who was camping in protest at a public park near the Cop City site – the first such incident in US history. Opposition to the project has come from a wide range of local and national supporters, with concerns such as unchecked police militarization and clearing forests in an era of climate crisis. Atlanta police say the center is needed for “world-class” training.
...
Rutledge clerked for Clarence Thomas, and is featured in a painting included in ProPublica’s reporting on Republican donor Harlan Crow’s gifts to the supreme court justice.
“The fact that this institution that embodies and makes up so much of the power structure in our state is limiting itself from supplying a critical tool for government transparency is appalling and disappointing,” Barnes added.
The decision doesn’t just affect the Cop City case. Various local press outlets this week have expressed concern after learning about losing free legal help with public records. Appen Media, based in the suburbs north of Atlanta, wrote that “[j]ournalists across Georgia are mourning the loss of a crucial service”.
The suit against the police foundation, meanwhile, could have an impact beyond Georgia, said Vogel.
“If a decision is made that makes them subject to open records requests,” he said, “it will set a precedent that others will follow around the country.”

What Fandoms I Write For & Which Characters
It’s easier for me to write for characters I like versus ones I do not. It is also easier for me to write romantic stories for characters I personally fancy/like.
If the character that you want isn’t there, I’m not doing a certain type of request for them, etc. You can still ask, but please be nice about it if I say I won’t write it.
Characters that are minors/under 18 will NOT be shipped with readers who are over the age of 18. If a character ages throughout (example: Harry Potter) specify which age you want that character. Honestly please, please, PLEASE specify in general!

1928, 1937, 1946, 1954, 1962
thanks friend!!!
1928 - The Passion of Joan of Arc (dir. Carl Theodor Dreyer)
several movies this year i just love (The Wind! The Crowd! The Circus! Steamboat Bill Jr.!) but everything about this film is kind of undeniable. between Falconetti's singular performance and the emotional wallop it manages to pull off, it's an unforgettable movie (and one i really need to rewatch)
1937 - Make Way for Tomorrow (dir. Leo McCarey) and The Awful Truth (dir. Leo McCarey)
if i had to pick just one... i mean, i guess Make Way for Tomorrow, but the fact of the matter is that Leo McCarey directed the two best films of the year. and for my money, one of them is the saddest goddamn movie ever made and the other is funniest goddamn movie ever made. beulah bondi and irene dunne also both give the best performances of the year (and they both play women named lucy!). unreal that he was able to pull this off.
(i did 1946 yesterday but here's what i said!)
1946 - It’s a Wonderful Life (dir. Frank Capra)
as basic or as predictable as this pick is, it’s undoubtedly my favorite film of the year. still knocks me over every time I watch it. plus it features arguably the best performance of all time, which is a huge plus.
but what a deep, rich year. the actual best picture winner, The Best Years of Our Lives would probably be my #1 in just about any other year. and then there’s My Darling Clementine, A Matter of Life and Death, Great Expectations, Notorious… lord!!
1954 - Sansho the Bailiff (dir. Kenji Mizoguchi)
Mizoguchi quietly dominated the early 1950s, and Sansho is his masterpiece. as emotionally shattering as any film ever made, plus a whole slew of incredible performances, including the underrated kyoko kagawa.
incredible year, btw. other highlights for me include On the Waterfront, Rear Window, Johnny Guitar, Seven Samurai, A Star is Born, Twenty-Four Eyes, La Strada, It Should Happen to You, Sabrina, Hobson's Choice, Salt of the Earth, Senso, Godzilla, White Christmas, The Caine Mutiny, Dial M for Murder, Carmen Jones... i mean good lord. the well runs DEEP.
1962 - Lawrence of Arabia (dir. David Lean) and Cléo from 5 to 7 (dir. Agnès Varda)
i go back and forth between these two masterpieces so much. Lawrence of Arabia is as epic and breathtaking as a film can get, with an astounding human story at its center. Cléo from 5 to 7 is practically the opposite, a delicate and intimate and self-contained character study. Lawrence is so male-centric that it doesn't have a single credited woman in the cast, while the unabashedly feminine Cléo is a tour de force from Varda. and my god, the performances (Peter O'Toole! Omar Sharif! Corinne Marchand!). the music!! unreal. we're lucky to have both of these.
